Which place is better, Alleppey or Kumarakom?

Kerala is famous for its Backwaters. Both Alleppey and Kumarakom offer an almost similar experience. It is difficult to choose one. But Kumarakom and Alleppey both are special in different ways. Kumarakom is located in the backdrop of the Vembanad lake, which is the largest lake in the state of Kerala. It is well known for its bird sanctuary, mangrove forests, paddy fields, coconut groves, etc. If you wish to get away from the hustle-bustle of the city then Kumarakom is the best place to be. Kumarakom is much more rural and has more luxury resorts than Alleppey.

Alleppey lies on the coastline of the Arabian sea and is well known for its beautiful Alleppey backwaters, beaches, tropical village life, temples, and boat races.  It is one of the cleanest and oldest planned backwater towns in Kerala. If you are looking for a houseboat stay with viewing village life & backwater beauty, Alleppey is good, if you are looking for just a houseboat ride in a lake then Kumarakom is good for it.

If you are low on budget and wish for an affordable budget houseboat, it is a wise decision to choose Alleppey as your tourist destination. Alleppey backwater day tour is cost-effective and affordable. Hence if you are looking for peace of mind during your stay, Kumarakom is the best choice for you as here you can enjoy the quiet atmosphere and rejuvenate yourself. It offers silent and scenic natural beauty.

However, if you are planning for a long stay, both the places are worth visiting and are amazing on their own. Various houseboats provide Alleppey to Kumarakom houseboat packages that can help you to visit both destinations during your Kerala trip.

But if you are staying at the resort-like Coconut Lagoon, you will enjoy bird watching in the early morning hours at the resort itself, because it is located just beside the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. The resort offers bird watching tours for their guests in the morning and their in-house tour guide is amazing. I could see many birds during the early morning bird-watching session at the Coconut Lagoon.

Feel the Charm of Backwaters

Kerala is famous for its backwaters and Kumarakom has a network of canals and rivers that opens at Vembanad lake. If you are staying at the resort and not in a houseboat, you can take a boat ride through the backwaters of Kumarakom. The boat sizes may vary according to the people and how luxurious you want!

Even the resorts offer their own boat trips according to your choices. You can take a speed boat, ‘Shikara’ type, or something typical Kerala style as per your convenience and budget. Kumarakom and its surrounding make it a perfect place to visit with green hills and coconut groves.

good places to visit near kumarakom

The Shikara boats are mostly Motor operated and you can tour the whole lagoon through these boats for an hour or so. You will pass through narrow canals, local villages, and mangrove forests. It is the best way to see the village life and how locals live by the lake, of a kind experience you can’t miss in Kumarakom. You can see the locals doing their daily chores, fishing, cleaning clothes, and so on. So, Boatride of backwaters is one of the must-do things in Kumarakom.

Take an Ayurvedic Massage

Kerala is most famous for its Ayurvedic Massages in the world! One of the prime reasons Kerala is famous for its Ayurveda is its richness in resources and fair climate makes it the perfect place to experience Ayurveda for holistic healing. so, you will find many massage centers at every nook and corner in Kerala.

Also, Most of the resorts have an Ayurvedic Spa facility on their premises. There are different types of massages that will give you complete rejuvenation of the body. so, don’t forget to add ayurvedic massage to one of your lists of things to do in Kumarakom.

The types of massages that are famous in Kumarakom are Shirodhara, Neck and Back Massage, Foot Massage, full body massage, head massage, etc. Also, Panchkarma is famous to treat illnesses of the body. Most of the time, the oil used for massage in Kumarakom is coconut oil, along with other Ayurvedic oils mixed in it.

The aroma is shooting. And the message really does good to the blood circulation in the body. The bliss of nature, coupled with some relaxing spa time can rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul while preparing you for the next big leap in your professional or personal world. So, I highly recommend adding a massage to your most popular things to do in Kumarakom.

Stay in Houseboat for Entire Day/Night

One of the top things to do in Kerala is Houseboat stay as Kerala offers one of the unique experiences to you. As I described Kumarakom and Alleppey offer backwater lagoons, canals, and lakeshores. But of the most amazing and unique experiences is staying on a houseboat.

Imagine, sitting by the window of your room on a houseboat, sailing through the picturesque backwaters, and enjoying the pristine landscape, which can transport your thoughts to a surreal world. The green plantations surround the backwaters and as you continue to sail, the plantations seem to move along with you. The beautiful Vembanad Lake is the result of the union of 10 rivers, and that makes it one of the largest lakes you will ever see.

Houseboat stay in Kumarakom

There are many providers offering overnight houseboat experience in Kumarakom as well. And many times, the resorts themselves have tie-up with these providers. So, that means the houseboat will come to your resort and you can onboard from there. The houseboats are not just equipped with basic amenities but also with luxury items. You will have a cook and a driver on board with you to serve your needs.

You can hire a room in a houseboat for a few hours or book it for the whole night. However, the journey usually starts during lunchtime– around 12 PM– and you can sail about on the backwaters till about 6 PM.

After that, the boats are anchored till around 7 AM, after which they set sail again. You can end your voyage after breakfast the next day at 10 AM. so, Houseboat sailing or staying in a houseboat is another must-have for your list of best things to do in Kumarakom.

Enjoy Kathakali Performance

If you are in Kerala, and you don’t watch Kathakali Show it would be unfair to leave the place before witnessing at least one Kathakali show. Kumarakom is an amazing place to enjoy Kathakali, which is one of the traditional dance forms of Kerala.

Some of the things that make this dance form really popular among travelers from all parts are its bold form, dynamic mudras, diverse facial expressions, and the charismatic accompanying rhythm make the ambiance magical and mythical. Kathakali’s performance includes the tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Kathakali dance

But the most amazing thing about Kathakali which draws attention is the heavy facial makeup of artists and their dress. It takes 3-4 hours to apply the makeup on the face! If you are going to watch the show in any theatre, then make sure to reach early and see how they apply it! Whether you are artistically inclined, or not, witnessing a traditional art form performance must be on your list of things to do in Kumarakom. Also, almost all luxury resorts include cultural shows in the evening to treat their guests.

Go for Fishing

You are visiting a land of beautiful lakes and beaches and henceforth, you must add fishing to the list of things to do in Kumarakom. Fishing is the major activity in Kerala, so you can try it here. Regularly on houseboats, or, when your hotel is found appropriate on the backwaters, you can invest some energy in attempting your hands-on fishing.

Also, You don’t need any fancy types of equipment for the same! Most of the time, your houseboat person or resort staff can arrange it for you. If you love cooked fish, you will surely enjoy fresh catch, that too from your own hand as fisherman! Also, Kerala is famous for its seafood, so you devour the best fresh seafood whenever you want! But if you like spending some time outdoors, fishing is a great adventure activity to try your hands on!

Indulge in Water activities

Kumarakom enjoys slow life and you will love its serenity and peace, but hold on! Kumarakom also offers a few adventure activities which may engage you for a while. The real-life of Kumarakom’s backwaters lies in the inland channels of the rivers and Kayaking is the best way to explore it. Most of the Luxury resorts of Kumarakom offer the equipment for Kayaking and Canoeing.

So, if you are an adventure lover and love spending time in the water, go kayaking or canoeing in the backwaters of Vembanad lake in Kumarakom. Early morning and late evenings are the best time to see nature at its best, so this would be an ideal time to go Kayaking and Canoeing.

Kayking in kumarakom

Most of the resorts have these activities at additional charges. But if your hotel or resort doesn’t offer it, then also you can book it through online agencies or other local companies. But always make sure they provide life jackets and give you proper guidance if you are a novice or do not have enough experience.

The tours usually run for two to four hours depending on sightseeing options like sunrise tours, river, and canal, local village tours, etc.  But if you go for three or four hours of tour, you can see more interior parts of the landscape, vast paddy, and local village.

Visit the Local Village Aymanam

If you have already done with major Kumarakom tourist spots, then give the village visit a try. Tucked away in the outskirts of Kottayam city and 10 km from Kumarakom, the tiny village of Aymanam is very special in its own way. The village is very scenic with swaying coconut trees, unparalleled beauty, and cultural diversity.

good places to visit near kumarakom

Aymanam is a tiny village that has Lake Vembanad to its left and River Meenachil flowing from its right, nature has blessed this village parts like a boon. Almost 2/3rd of the land is covered with rice plantations. Kerala is a true ‘God’s Own Country’ where nature lives in every part of the state.

It came to be known in people’s eyes by the beautiful description of the village in Arundhati Roy’s Booker Prize-winning novel, T he God of Small Things . In the novel, she describes her hometown as Aymanam and the place became internationally famous after Kumarakom. The term ‘Aymanam’ is derived from multiple languages.

‘Ay’ is a Tamil term that means five and ‘vanam’ is a Sanskrit word, meaning forest. But today, the village is famous for its Responsible Tourism. It also beckons visitors for undertaking bird watching tours, walking in paddy fields, visiting temples and churches, enjoying boat rides, and savoring coconut-rich delicacies. fondly, visiting Aymanam is one of the top things to do in Kumarakom.

Kumarakom sustainable activities

As a part of Kerala Travel Mart 2022, I along with my group visited Aymanam to see the village and how it offers so many activities. The villagers live quite a simple life and they are mostly engaged in the activities of making arts & crafts from coconut or other local produces. I have learned about so many arts and crafts of India in Gujarat , Jaipur , Hyderabad, Maheshwar, and now Kerala. I love seeing weavers at work!

Here we came to know about making mates from Palm leaves, coir making from coconut husk, and modern techniques of coconut tree climbing to get the coconuts from the tree and local fishing. Also, you can learn about local spices along with ride paddy fields and banana trees. You can book these activities and handicrafts tours from Kerala tourism.

Visit St Mary’s Church(Kottayam Cheriapally) , Kottayam

St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, commonly known as Kottayam Cheriapally, is located in Kottayam. Cheriapally meaning ‘small church’ but looking at the church you will come to know that it is one of the oldest and most well-preserved churches in Kerala.

The church is dedicated to mother Mary and has the unique distinction of being the first church in India to get the relics of St. Mary. The church was built in 1579 but still, it has retained its old-world charm! The interior of the church is made with wooden architecture, beautiful Paintings, and innovative paintings.

Kumarakom sightseeing attractions

I will not go deep into the history here but one thing would love to mention here is that when you visit Cheriapally, you may feel that the architecture greatly resembles that of some temples in Kerala. The big pillar known as ‘ Dhwajastambh’ will be seen on the ground and you can see the religious flag on top like the Hindu temples ‘Dhwaja’.

Also, the niches in the walls accommodate hundreds of oil lamps. It is said that, when Hindus converted to Christianity, they continued their few rituals of Hinduism and it is reflected in the architecture of churches! So the churches in Kerala have some distinct styles of architecture from medieval times to till today.

good places to visit near kumarakom

The also church exhibits a blend of Kerala and Portuguese styles of architecture with the mural art on the church interiors depicting the major incidents in Jesus Christ’s life. The ceiling with tiles is adorned with various paintings but several of the wall paintings had faded with the passage of time. With its unique features and the exciting tales surrounding it, Kottayam Cheriapally is a must-visit Kumarakom sightseeing place for the love of traditional buildings and architecture.

You can visit the church from 9.30 AM to 5.30 PM from Monday to Friday, Closed on Saturday and Sunday from 07.30 AM to 3.30 PM.

Visit Toddy Shops in Kumarakom

When you are in Kerala, you can’t miss tiny wooden shantis(shops) in the local language tucked away in greenery and backwaters! These Toddy shanties (Commonly known as Toddy Shops) are local wine shops of sorts and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions of palm sap. You will hear multiple names for Toddy in Kerala –  Palm Wine, Palm Toddy, etc which all are the product of different species of palm trees!

Must do activities in Kumarakom

This palm sap derived from incising the clusters of coconut can be served in two forms. The alcoholic version called toddy in Kerala is mildly intoxicating, and if you’re a fan of sweet alcoholic beverages, you are likely to take a liking to it. The non-alcoholic version called Neera is the unfermented sap from coconut often called sweet toddy and is derived from the immature inflorescence of coconut. ‘Neera’ is available in many states in India including my state Gujarat.

But for the first time, I tested ‘ Toddy’- the alcoholic version , but I didn’t like the taste. But surely I love drinking Neera-the original sap. I think if you come to Kerala and don’t try even a little sip of the palm wine, you really did miss out! A little sip will not kill you and you may end up regretting it. So, while cruising through the backwaters, must visit one of the Toddy shops and have a few conversations with locals over the glass of Toddy- one of the bucket list things to do in Kumarakom!

Explore the Offbeat Places – Thazhathangady Juma Masjid

If you are an architecture and history lover, you must visit Kerala once in your lifetime! Thazhathangady Juma Masjid is located near Kottayam on the banks of the Meenachali river. The mosque is one of the oldest mosques in India and is more than 1000 years old! It is believed that Habib Dinar (son of Malik Dinar who introduced Kerala to Islam) constructed the masjid.

best things to do in Kumarakom

Like Kerala Churches, this mosque is also built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture. It is considered a metaphor for cultural and ethnic harmony in Kerala. When you see the mosque, you will notice the beautiful exquisite wooden carvings and rich architecture. A square inner courtyard, an exquisitely carved wooden gabled roof, a traditional bathing area, and lovely latticed windows resembling a temple or a king’s palace make it a delight to behold.

Note – Only men are allowed entry to this historic site. Mosque timings: 07:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Take a Day trip to MaraiKulam(Marari) Beach

Marai Beach is located in Maraikulam Village-fishing village, located 40 km from Kochi and 27 km from Kumarakom, and is considered one of the best beaches in Kerala. The idyllic nature scene and white sand make it the perfect beach gateway from Kumarakom or Kochi. The beach is usually empty and is surrounded by a range of upscale resorts and restaurants. It is one of the best sandy beaches in South Kerala adorned with a lot of coconut trees making it one of the best places to visit Kumarakom.

Places to visit near Kumarakom cherai beach

If you just want to relax and have a private beach to yourself, visiting Marai Beach is the best thing to do in Kerala. You can have a fine dining experience at one of the upscale luxurious resort- like CGH Earth or ABAD Turtle resort. They have temporary huts on the beach and serve tasty food.

I had lunch at ABAD Turtle Beach, Marai on the way to Kumarakom and I totally enjoyed the local cuisines. Abad has one of the best multi-cuisine restaurants to satiate your taste buds. The resort overlooks the white sandy beach and has beautiful surroundings. It has a private beach where you can enjoy the peace of privacy! I loved visiting their butterfly garden- so close to nature!

Marari Beach is stunning and unspoiled, as it is still the lesser-known place to visit in Kerala. So, if you are in Kumarakom and need some beach time, you should visit Marari Beach during your Kerala vacation.

Visit the Vagamon Hillstation

Kerala is not just about the Backwaters and beaches but it has beautiful hill stations like Munnar, Palakkad, Vagamon, etc. Many of you know about Munnar and its famous tea plantations. I also love visiting tea gardens and I visited many in India from Darjeeling, Ooty, and Coonoor to Munnar during this trip.

But Vagamon is another beautiful hill station, at a drive of almost 2.5 hrs from Kumarakom. So, while staying in Kumarakom, if you would like to experience different terrains for a day, head to Vagamon for a day trip. Vagamon is a small hill station surrounded by a lush green landscape. Also, it is not visited by many tourists, so you can expect less crown than other popular places to visit in Kerala. Start your journey early in the morning, enjoy the surroundings, take a walk and have lunch at local restaurants and end the day by the backwaters. So, Vegamon is a perfect day trip to add to the list of things to do in Kumarakom.

The government also takes care of the beautiful towering coconut trees and overall natural haunts of the birds as per a stringent routine. The magnificent beauty of the bird sanctuary befriends you and makes you feel like you belonged there all your life.During the migratory season, thousands of birds arrive and loaf in the ostentatious nature of this sanctuary. It is absolutely astonishing to see them stay close to each other in a small radius. It is almost like they're interconnecting with each other and have opted to stay in a clique.Though it’s not easy to spot these birds, people who are true bird enthusiasts or have been birdwatching since a long time can easily spot a rare species even at a single glance. The tourism department of the Kerala state government also manages a beautiful age-old mansion in the sanctuary called the 'Baker's Mansion.' The mansion is more than 70 years old and is a part of the sanctuary since the time it was known as 'Baker's Estate’. The estate was created by an Englishman named George Alfred Baker. The sanctuary is pretty clean and well maintained. As you visit the reserve, you will find a circuit of paths that will take you along the entire sanctuary. There is about 2 km of road that will help you witness every neck of the woods in the sanctuary. You can also go to the interpretation center in the sanctuary built by the government, should you like to know about the birds that visit during the migratory season. The sanctuary is positioned on the beautiful banks of Kavanar River. After you are done exploring, you can take a boat ride in the Kavanar River or Vembanad Lake just to spectate the charm of the place. Not only the place is at par with heaven for bird aficionados, but it is also a delight for the people who’d love to spend some time in tranquility away from their homes and the ever-bustling cities. 10 best tourist places to visit in Kerala and things to do

The staple food of Kerala is influenced by the history and culture of the state. It is a blend of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Rice, fish and coconut are the common ingredients. Kerala is known as the spice bowl of India so, naturally, the flavours are enriched with chillies, curry leaves, mustard seeds, tamarind, black pepper, cardamom, clove, ginger, cinnamon and asafoetida. Enjoy the fresh coconut water. Upma, masala dosa, puttu, idli and appam are popular for breakfast. One of the well-known dishes of Kerala is idiyappam. Also known as Noolappam in Kerala cuisine, idiyappam is made of rice flour, salt and water with several thin strands or sevai entwined together. Puttu and kandala curry is considered to be one of the popular traditional Kerala dishes. Puttu is a cylindrical steamed rice cake that is cooked in a mould with grated coconut. It can be served with ripe bananas, grated coconut and kandala curry (the Kerala version of kala chana). Sadya, the multi-course meal, is served during festivals and weddings. This regal lunch includes rasam, pachadi, kichadi, pulissery, olan, sambar, papad, varavu, thoran, aviyal and payasam served with hot steaming rice on a banana leaf.

Kerala is well-known for spicy versions of non-vegetarian dishes. Must-have desserts include palada payasam and halwa, which are special desserts of Kerala. Palada payasam is made by boiling crunchy vermicelli and rice in milk and flavoured with cardamom, sugar and butter. Banana halwa is a must-try when visiting the land of backwaters. Neyyappam should be on the list of Kerala sweets and snacks to try. Neyyappam is typically made from rice flour, coconut, cardamom, milk and ghee and stuffed with a mixture of jaggery.

Yaroslavl, Russia

You are here, about yaroslavl.

Yaroslavl is a town of unsurpassed beauty. Everywhere is The Volga , and everywhere in history. The city is over 1000 years old and was founded by Yaroslav, the son of Russia’s first Christian grand prince Vladimir the Great. Yaroslav landed here in 1010 to suppress a hostile pagan tribe that raided passing merchants.

In defense, the tribe released their secret weapon, a sacred bear with a taste for human warriors. Yaroslav later called “Yaroslav the Wise,” merely grabbed an ax and dropped it with one blow. As a result, the city's coat of arms today features a bear carrying an ax.

At first, the city served as an outpost of the principality of Veliky Rostov, a river port further down the Volga. Later it became a separate state, a vassal under the pre-Mongol Russian grand principality in 1218. And after Kiev was sacked in 1242, Yaroslavl grew rapidly in importance. Eventually, Yaroslavl became Russia’s political, economic, cultural, and technological center.

Reasons to travel to Yaroslavl

Despite all the raids, most of the city’s great sights remained almost untouched. Set securely in a triangle defined in part by the junction of the Kotorosl and the Volga rivers. This is where visitors will find the most picturesque of the city’s monuments: the Church of Ilya (or Elijah) the Prophet, the Church of the Archangel Michael, and the Alexander Nevsky Chapel.

Another important cultural treasure is the art gallery, set in the old Governor’s Building, that holds a collection of over 60,000 icons, masterpieces of visual arts, sculpture, and handicrafts, some dating as far back as the 13th century.

What is more the mid-sized city of 600,000 also takes pride in giving birth to many famous sons and daughters, among the most renown of which is the world’s first woman to go to space - Valentina Tereshkova.

Everything said above is a nice ground for your upcoming Yaroslavl trip which will definitely leave you with truly memorable impressions.
