First time river cruiser, and appear to have broken every rule I've found on this forum - about four weeks ago we booked a two week river cruise that leaves this Saturday!

We're flying from the UK to Marseilles and joining the ms Excellence Rhone in Arles. A week later, having cruised our way up to Switzerland, we get driven to Basel and meet the ms Excellence Queen for a week travelling up to Amsterdam.

We got a great price,good flight times and a class A balcony room on the upper deck so all sounds good so far. I'm really looking forward to the trip and it sounds like we'll be seeing lots of places and lots of castles, which will keep my other half happy!

I'm hoping for some feedback, some suggestions, some experiences from those who've travelled on these boats, or any more general advice for us. We're relatively young for the river cruising scene at 32, but have done more than a dozen ocean cruises including ones where we were the youngest by a long way. We like good food, good wine, seeing new places and getting plenty of time to relax and watch the world go by.

Have we made a horrible mistake? What can we expect? Why is there so little information online about these boats?

Thanks for the links, but they seem to be the only online record of the boats except the "testimonials" on the Travelmarvel website, of which I'm naturally sceptical. I was hoping for some personal thoughts, feedback, reviews.

I guess we'll just have see! Flying out tomorrow to meet the first boat in the South of France. Wish us luck!

as you are now on your way to Arles - amazing place by the way - you might not read this before you come back home. But here goes anyway: both ships are based in Basel. They belong to the Excellence Group and are chartered by the company you are travelling with. Most passengers on most of the cruises are therefore German (at least have been in previous years) and reviews are available in German on various websites. They seem to be mostly favourable. However, as you are travelling on a chartered cruise you might have a different experience as regards crew, fellow passengers, food, excursions, etc.

Go with the flow and have fun!

Thanks notamermaid and hello from Arles. The boat is only half full, at 72 pax, and most of them are Australian, with maybe ten or twelve Brits.

I think I shall have to make sure I write down a review of the journey so there's some record online!

Some first impressions from us, in case others find this thread:

Free wifi and 10 mb speeds which is good

Room quite small but nice enough. Twin beds pushed together. Bathroom lovely and almost as big as the room itself

Yes you do get boats next to you - 24 hours so far or having an Avalon boat tied to our side

The crew don't speak great english - management obviously do, the waiting staff need repetition and clarity. Last night I ordered pork and received cod.

Gin and tonic an extortionate 7.70€. Large glass of wine just 4€ in comparison

Breakfast served 7-9 and then pastries for later risers 9.30-10.30

When they say the trip is leaving at nine, they mean it. We left out room at 8.58 this morning and were the last on the coach

Itinerary:  If you are planning to go to Peterhof to see the Grand Palace and its famous parks and gardens, then we recommend taking this popular high-speed hydrofoil. It will be faster and fun! You can choose to go on your own or hire a tour guide, up to you. At the end of your visit, you can return to the city the same way.

The 2020-built/2021-inaugurated MS Excellence Empress cruise ship is a newbuild riverboat owned by the German travel company Swiss Excellence River Cruise Gmbh Basel (subsidiary of Twerenbold Reisen) and operated by Excellence Flussreisen (travel brand) via Reiseburo Mittelthurgau AG (marketing and sales). The vessel was constructed in Serbia using the latest shipbuilding technologies.

The Switzerland- flagged ship (MMSI number 269057729, ENI 2338652) was built in Serbia and is registered in Basel . For its construction were used the finest materials and latest shipbuilding technologies. Of the same design (sisterships) are Excellence Princess (2014) and Excellence Countess (2019). These large riverboats (length 135 m) feature floor-ceiling windows throughout ( decks 2 and 3), glass-covered Bar Lounge, spacious Dining Room Restaurant, separate specialty restaurant (Steakhouse-Sushi Bar).

Excellence Empress staterooms (a total of 89) are all outside and on 3 decks (out of 4). All staterooms offer as standard amenities a wall-mounted HDTV (satellite reception, ship info channel, real-time bow camera views), phone, wardrobe, electronic safe box (in the closet), minibar (refrigerator), double bed (convertible to twins), bedside tables (2-drawer) with reading lamps, writing desk (mirrored vanity table) with padded stool, bottled water, en-suite bathroom (single-sink vanity, under-sink storage, WC-toilet, glass shower, magnifying mirror, hairdryer, towels), individually controllable air-conditioning.

All Comfort cabins (on decks Middle-2 and Upper-3) are equally sized (16 m2 / 170 ft2) and with French Balcony (accessed via sliding glass door / floor-ceiling opening window). Main Deck cabins (sized 13 m2 / 140 ft2) are with two single beds (non-convertible to double) and non-opening windows (located near the ceiling). The 24x Junior Suites are French Balcony cabins sized 20 m2 (215 ft2). Suite perks include a DVD player and premium bathrobes, welcome aboard gifts (sparkling wine and fruits upon arrival).

The Excellence ship Empress has two handicap cabins (wheelchair-accessible rooms on Upper Deck) adapted for passengers with reduced mobility. Both disabled cabins (301-302) are conveniently located near the Lobby area (and the boat's Lift).

Shipboard facilities

The Excellence Lounge (boat's main bar lounge, forward on Deck 3) has comfortable seating and a small bow-located terrace (with limited seating). Here is also held the formal Captain's Cocktail Reception (welcome aboard event). The Bar Lounge also serves the cruise company's onboard enrichment program with live entertainment (crew show, cooking demos, local guest performances), daily quiz games, themed and dance nights (often with live music), language courses, lectures (folklore- or history-themed) about the visited region along the cruise itinerary route.

The Lobby Hall (Deck 3 midship) houses the Reception Desk (24-hour guest services and assistance), Tour Desk (Cruise Director, itinerary information, excursions booking), Gift Shop and the boats's both entrances (Eingang) - portside and starboard. At the stern on Deck 3, the Aft Lounge doubles as daily Library / Cocktail Bar and an evening Sushi Bar-Steakhouse (a la carte restaurant). Aft Lounge is served with beverages by its own Bar (Bordbar).

The large Sun Deck (Deck 4) features a Mini-Golf Course (Putting Green), a heated Swimming Pool (round-shaped), sunbathing areas (with loungers and deckchairs), shaded seating areas (canopy-covered). Forward are located the outdoor Sky Lounge (BBQ & Bar with 4-seat tables) and a small SkyLight (glass roof over the Bar Lounge on Deck 3 forward). All structures on Sun Deck (Wheelhouse, awnings, railings) are collapsible and lowered when the boat passes under low bridges. Excellence Empress ship's dining includes a balanced breakfast buffet, Afternoon Tea service (complimentary pastries with coffee and tea in the afternoons), a nice variety of European dishes for lunch and dinner - including vegan and vegetarian items. The fore-located (on Deck 2) Panorama Restaurant features a Show Kitchen (with live cooking stations). The Restaurant offers a buffet breakfast (with warm and cold items), buffet-style lunch (salads, starters, desserts) with waiter-served main dishes and waiter-served dinner (5-course menu). Every day a themed buffet offers international cheese specialities, along with grilled gourmet food. With all main meals is offered a menu with premium wines (by the glass). In the Restaurant is also held the formal Gala Dinner event.

The attentive staff and qualified tour guides are always available to assist cruise tourists. Onboard language is German. The Excellence ship Empress has one Elevator (passenger lift interconnecting decks 1-2-3 / Main-Middle-Upper) and a stairlift that links decks Upper (3) and Sundeck (4).

Vessel's construction (hull and superstructure, ENI number TBA) was done at the Vahali Shipyard in Zasavica (Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia). The 1923-founded Dutch shipbuilding company (Scheepswerf En Machinefabriek Vahali BV) owns and operates yards in Serbia ( Belgrade , and Zasavica) and in Holland (Gendt). Vahali Shipyard Zasavica was officially opened in 2013. Following the construction in Serbia, the cruise ship was towed to Holland for final outfitting at Scheepswerf Vahali (Gendt).
