The 10 Best Things to Do on Cape Horn, Chile

A Visit to the End of the World

cape horn trip

Cape Horn is located on Hornos Island in Chile's Tierra del Fuego region, and is the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. In the 19th century, clipper ships sailed around this part of the world on voyages between Europe and Asia, though frequent storms in the region have left a scattered trail of more than 800 sunken ships and thousands to perish in their wake.

Today, while most cargo and cruise ships use the Panama Canal to cross between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, expedition cruise lines sail by this northern section of the infamous Drake Passage on routes to or from  Antarctica . If you're lucky enough to be on board, a short layover at the Chilean naval station (wind and weather permitting) can offer a glimpse of the region's maritime past. Go ashore to see the lighthouse, chapel, and the Cape Horn Memorial. You can also sign a guest book and get your passport stamped for a memorable souvenir of your visit.

"Round" Cape Horn on a Cruise Through the Drake Passage

The journey to the end of the earth is no small feat, as the seas surrounding Cape Horn are dangerous and the weather adverse. If you prefer to simply pass by Cape Horn during a larger sailing, several cruise lines like Holland America and Celebrity Cruises, among others, offer the chance to round Cape Horn on the journey from Santiago to Montevideo or Buenos Aires.

For a closer look at Cape Horn, try booking an adventure cruise, which gives you a different experience than that of a traditional cruise by offering themed packages centered around the outdoors and nature. Companies like Swoop Patagonia and Victory Adventure Expeditions offer adventure cruises that sail between Ushuaia and Punta Arenas, with a stop at Cape Horn. Count on wildlife and glacier viewings, as well as plenty of activities that take you off the beaten path.

Take a Scenic Flight Over Cape Horn

If the idea of sailing through part of the dreaded Drake Passage makes you sweat, consider booking a tour from Punta Arenas that includes a scenic flight over Cape Horn through a company like Far South Expeditions . Alternatively, you could charter a flight from Punta Arenas, which might be more affordable if you're traveling with a group or can gather some fellow travelers to help foot the bill.

Climb the Cliff

Ruben Earth / Getty Images

When visiting Cape Horn by boat, you'll access the island by your cruise ship's rigid inflatable boats (RIBs). Once there, climb across a rocky beach and up several flights of slippery steps to reach the top of the cliff. The scramble across the beach and the hike up the stairs isn't easy and is not recommended for older people or those with disabilities. Still, the view of the sea and surrounding island makes the trek worth the effort. Let your ship's tour guide direct you and keep small children in check.

Explore Hornos Island

Visitors are asked to stay on the wooden walkways that crisscross Hornos Island and lead to all the sites on the treeless headland. These walkways protect the fragile peat-bog ecosystem and keep visitors from tracking mud into the sites and then back to their cruise ships. Since the region gets a lot of rain, the walkways can be slippery, so it's best to wear sturdy, waterproof boots or shoes with rubber tread. Allow about two or three hours to walk around Hornos Island on the walkways and get your passport stamped.

Visit the Lighthouse

Daniela Goulart / Flickr / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Cape Horn has two lighthouses: One is at the Chilean Naval Station, which is the largest and most accessible to visitors. A Chilean family resides year-round on the island in the buildings nearby. While you can't go inside their abode, just seeing and contemplating the residence itself is quite moving, as it offers a glimpse of what it must be like to be the only human inhabitants of Cape Horn. For most of the year, this family has to endure severe weather and their only supplies come from passing cruise ships, making everyday rations and amenities few and far between.

The second, smaller one —coming in at 13-feet-high—is located about a mile away from the naval lighthouse on the actual "horn." The smaller of the two lighthouses is not readily accessible, but cruise ships (or their RIBs) can pass by it so guests can get a peek.

Visit the Stella Maris Chapel

Steven Kenworthy

Tiny Stella Maris Chapel is situated next to the main lighthouse at the Chilean Naval Station. The one-room chapel is only about a dozen feet long, but its doors are often open, welcoming visitors. Step inside to pay respects to the many sailors who lost their way or imagine the scene of past mariners who stopped in for a moment of prayer, thankfulness, or silence.

Take the Walkway to the Cape Horn Memorial

A 1,000-foot wooden walkway leads straight to the Cape Horn Memorial, which was added to Hornos Island in 1992. The Chilean section of the Cape Horn Captains Brotherhood sponsored the erection of this memorial that honors the thousands of mariners who lost their lives in the waters around the Cape. Take a jaunt to the marble plaque to read its blessing. On a particularly mild day, go slowly, as the scenery is definitely worth taking in.

Pay Your Respects at the Cape Horn Monument

The Cape Horn Monument features a flying albatross, which are commonly seen in the southern ocean and are a symbol of the Cape Horn Captains Brotherhood. Designed by a Chilean artist, the monument is constructed of 22-feet-high steel plates and made to withstand winds of 200 miles per hour. To build it, members of the Chilean Marine Corps used an amphibious exercise to transport over 120 tons of materials from two barges to shore.

See the "Actual" Cape Horn

A visit to Hornos Island wouldn't be complete without seeing the "actual" horn, the point where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. This narrow spit of land is surrounded by shallow and rocky waters and is not readily accessible by foot or boat. Still, your captain may point it out as you round the bend or, if you're lucky and the weather is nice, the conductor of your RIB can try to get close.

Get Your Passport Stamped

If your cruise ship visits Cape Horn, take your passport ashore and get it stamped. The family that operates the Chilean lighthouse will be happy to perform this service for you (just make sure to be respectful during your visit). The passport stamp makes a great souvenir and is one that baffles immigration officials around the world, as it is an unusual sight.

Each passenger, directly or through the travel agency that made the reservation, must send via email and at least 45 days in advance their vaccination certificate.

The Shipowner will communicate to the passenger, directly or through the respective travel agency, any doubts or observations regarding their official certification. The passenger must correct the corresponding doubts or objections. Notwithstanding the preceding, each passenger must show the corresponding official certificate without pending observations before sailing. Without a proper vaccination certificate, the passenger will not be able to board the ship.

Additionally, and before boarding, the Shipowner may require the passenger to perform a Covid-19 antigen test provided by the company for this purpose, which, if negative, will allow them to board the ship. In no case will this antigen test replace the vaccination certificate.

Likewise, the passenger’s responsibility is to have all the necessary documentation required by the authorities to enter the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Antarctic, which must be shown to the Shipowner if needed.

The trips described in the itineraries are usually possible. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Company reserves the right to alter, change or disregard part of this itinerary without prior notice, whether motivated by the welfare and safety of passengers, for the proper preservation of the environment or due to any extraordinary circumstance, fortuitous event or force majeure. Visit Cape Horn to soak up the mystique that goes with this historic place.

Like an ascent of Mount Everest, sailing around Cape Horn earns you a place amongst the elite and with good reason. Often wreathed in fog and smashed by towering seas, the southern-most headland of Cape Horn Island marks where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans collide.

Consider that prevailing conditions feature 200 days of gale, waves that rise more than 20 metres and the odd iceberg and you begin to understand the pride of “Cape Horners”.

Our voyage spans a minimum of six days with safe anchorages each evening. Starting in Ushuaia in Argentina, we sail down the Beagle Channel and turn south around Isla Navarino to Isla Herschel where we wait for the best conditions to attempt to round the Horn.

Australis provides the perfect viewing platform for a sea rich in fur seals, porpoises and whales and the graceful, mesmerising flight of the black-browed and wandering albatross.

We explore the rugged beauty of the islands, from stony beaches to sphagnum bogs and hike into the silent beauty of Antarctic beech forests that become more stunted the higher we climb.

If conditions allow, we land on Isla Hornos to visit the Chilean naval station and admire the magnificent albatross sculpture, a memorial to the many mariners seduced by Cape Horn.

Detailed Itinerary

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the most remote corners of planet Earth. During the night we traverse the Beagle Channel and cross from Argentina into Chilean territorial waters. The lights of Ushuaia disappear as we turn into the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands.

Day 2-Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

Around the break of dawn, the Australis cruise crosses Nassau Bay and enters the remote archipelago that comprises Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition — and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland — Cape Horn is a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic, and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument (currently awaiting repair after being damaged by fierce winds).

Sailing back across Nassau Bay, we anchor at fabled Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on HMS Beagle. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station — which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area — passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooded mountain behind the bay. On all of these you stroll through an enchanted Magellanic forest of lengas, coigües, canelos and ferns to reach panoramic viewpoints overlooking the bay.

Day 3 - Pía Glacier – Garibaldi Glacier

Overnight we continue our Patagonia glacier tour around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, the Australis cruise tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a shore excursion to Pia Glacier. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.

No one knows for certain how the hulking mass of snow and ice got its feminine moniker, but one theory says it was named for Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), daughter of the Italian king.

Making our way further west along the Beagle Channel, we enter another long fjord and drop anchor near Garibaldi Glacier for another shore excursion. Garibaldi is one of only three glaciers in Patagonia gaining mass rather than staying the same or slowly shrinking. This time we hike through virgin Magellanic forest to a glacial waterfall, a towering wall of ferns and moss, and spectacular viewpoints looking down on the glacier and fjord. The walk is demanding — very steep, negligible trail, rough footing — and not for everyone. For those who choose to stay onboard, our captain will point the bow towards the beautiful sky blue Garibaldi Glacier so everyone can enjoy the panoramic view from the upper decks.

Early in the morning, we will sail through the Cockburn Channel and enter Agostini Sound.  From there it is possible to see the glaciers that descend from the middle of the Darwin Mountain Range — some of them reaching the water. This morning, we will disembark and go for an easy walk around a lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Águila Glacier.  We will reach a spot right in front of that glacier with stunning views.  In the afternoon, we will approach the Condor Glacier via Zodiac — and hopefully see some of the abundant Andean Condors in the area.

Day 5- Magdalena Island - Punta Arenas

After an overnight cruise through Magdalena Channel and back into the Strait of Magellan, we anchor off Magdalena Island, which lies about halfway between Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean mainland. Crowned by a distinctive lighthouse, the island used to be an essential source of supplies for navigators and explorers and is inhabited by an immense colony of Magellanic penguins. At the break of dawn, weather permitting, we go ashore and hike a path that leads through thousands of penguins to a small museum lodged inside the vintage 1902 lighthouse. Many other bird species are also found on the island. In September and April — when the penguins dwell elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a ride aboard Zodiacs to Marta Island to observe South American sea lions.

After a short cruise south along the strait, disembarkation at Punta Arenas is scheduled for around 11:30 AM.

Day 1- Embarkation in Punta Arenas, Chile

Day 2 -Ainsworth Bay – Tuckers Islets

Day 3-Pia Glacier – Glacier Alley

Day 4 -Cape Horn – Wulaia Bay

Day 5 – Disembarkation in Ushuaia, Argentina

cape horn trip

After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the remotest corners of planet Earth. During the night we cross the Strait of Magellan and enter the labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonian. The twinkling lights of Punta Arenas gradually fade into the distance as we enter the Whiteside Canal between Darwin Island and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Day 2 -Ainsworth Bay - Tuckers Islets

By dawn the ship is sailing up Admiralty Sound (Seno Almirantazgo), a spectacular offshoot of the Strait of Magellan that stretches nearly halfway across Tierra del Fuego. The snowcapped peaks of Karukinka Natural Park stretch along the north side of the sound, while the south shore is defined by the deep fjords and broad bays of Alberto de Agostini National Park. We go ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals which can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Two guided excursions are available: one is along the edge of a stream, peat bog and beaver habitat to a waterfall-and-moss-covered rock face tucked deep inside a pristine sub-polar forest; the other is a more strenuous hike along the crest of a glacial moraine. Both afford views of Marinelli Glacier and the Darwin Mountains.

Leaving our Ainsworth Bay tour behind, we sail west along the sound to the Tucker Islets. After lunch, we board the Zodiacs again for a close-up view of the Magellan penguins that inhabit the tiny islands. More than 4,000 penguins use Tucker as a place to nest, give birth and nurture their chicks. Many other bird species also frequent the area including king cormorants, oystercatchers, Chilean skuas, kelp geese, dolphin gulls, eagles and even the occasional Andean condor. In September and April — when the penguins live elsewhere — this excursion is replaced by a short walk to a glacier at nearby stunning Brookes Bay.

Day 3-Pia Glacier - Glacier Alley

Overnight we sail around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, the Australis cruise tacks eastward and enters the Beagle Channel again. By morning we are entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a Pia Glacier tour. After disembarking we take a short hike to gain a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier, which extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.

Back onboard the ship, we continue east along the Beagle Channel through an area called Glacier Alley. Living up to its name, the passage features a number of impressive tidewater glaciers flowing down from the Darwin Mountains and Darwin Ice Sheet on the north shore. Most of them named after European countries — Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

Day 4 -Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

During the morning we cruise across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, we shall go ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station — which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area — passengers have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooden mountain behind the bay. On all of these you will be strolling through an enchanted Magellan forest of lengas, coigües, canelos, ferns, and other endemic fauna to reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum – letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers – an ancient mariner tradition revived by Australis

Mountain peak on Carpe Horn Island surrounded by a dark blue ocean

Scenic Cruising Cape Horn

It may be the most notorious ocean passage in the world, and for centuries it evoked dread in the hearts of sailors. But those who survived a trip around Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific slosh violently into each other, had bragging rights for life. Along this passage, the Tierra del Fuego, or "land of fire," where Chile and Argentina converge at the bottom of the world, got its name from early sailors who saw the fires of the people who lived here burning on shore. For some 8,000 years, until as recently as the end of the 19th century, this was the home of the Yaghan and other indigenous groups.

Magellan and Drake left their mark and names here, as did Darwin, who sailed through here on the HMS Beagle . The great clipper ships of '49er lore later fought their way through fierce waves carrying gold between California and the East Coast in that era before the Panama Canal. Just as Richard Henry Dana, Jr., described in his masterful  Two Years Before the Mast , published in 1840, a journey today around the Cape at the very bottom of the Tierra is shaped by capricious weather, as powerful winds and shallow waters can produce waves that reach as high as 30 meters (100 feet).

DISEMBAR KATION

Step on board in Christchurch to sail Cape Horn, one of the three biggest achievements for sailors.

Voyage description

Rounding ‘The Storm Cape’ is for a sailor what reaching the top of Mount Everest is for the mountaineer. Countless books tell of the heroic voyages of sailing ships in earlier times. On this long voyage, we have plenty of time to read all those books again and to imagine the glory days of sailing.

The southern oceans are under the influence of the westerly wind. Water and waves are pushed up by this wind. Because there is nothing to slow down these waves, they can grow into huge mountains of water. The winds are often strong, and these latitudes (from 40 to 50 degrees south) are therefore nicknamed ‘Roaring Forties’. Cape Horn itself, lies even further south, in the ‘Furious Fifties’. The approaching waves are forced through the relatively narrow gap between the cape and the Antarctic Peninsula. Because the ocean here is relatively shallow, this can lead to dangerous seas, especially in stormy weather.

But it really isn’t all doom and gloom. If you want to go from west to east quickly, it’s just smart to do it as far south as possible. The distance to be covered is then smaller and you benefit from the westerlies. We do our voyage not only in the right season (summer), but we also sail from West to East, with the wind at our back. Moreover, with our modern means of communication we have a good overview of how the weather is developing. We can choose to go a little more to the South or to the North and thus avoid too extreme weather. Unlike in the past, we also know exactly where the ice line is.

Nevertheless, it remains a long and challenging journey, in which we are completely on our own. Perhaps that is still the biggest challenge: making sure that we personally do not interfere with each other too much, all these weeks. Fortunately, there is always something to do. Maintenance on the ship will have to be done, as best as sea conditions allow us. And during the long voyage we encounter whales, dolphins, penguins, and many albatrosses. After weeks at sea, Cape Horn looms on the horizon. Once we’ve passed this infamous rock, we can change course and sail on to the Falkland Islands.

Before and after your voyage leg We strongly recommend you book a few days accommodation in the port of your embarkation (prior to your joining Oosterschelde), and a few days in the port you disembark (after your place on the voyage ends). This will allow you to recover before and after your adventure and will give you the opportunity to explore locations at your start and end points.

Land based tour organized by Redfern Adventures Redfern Adventures has put together really focused itineraries that offer you the chance to explore the incredible Falkland Islands and the beautiful island of Saint Helena after you disembark or before you embark (depending upon which voyage leg you are joining). These itineraries are specifically designed to take in the best wildlife and historic tourist sites that these locations offer.  The Falkland Islands and Saint Helena Add On Trips are organized separately from the DARWIN200 Global Voyage through the travel operator Redfern Adventures.

Q & A sessions Interested in joining? Join our live information session about the 2023-25 Global Voyage. Each Information Session is beamed via Zoom and includes an overview of the global voyage, information about each of the 32 voyage legs, a live walk around Oosterschelde (when her schedule allows) and a Questions and Answers exchange.

Join the next info session via www.darwin200.com/info .

Level 3-voyages are only suitable for the experienced and fit (sea)traveler. The weather could be challenging and during a crossing, there a few if not any options to divert to a harbor. We sail out of reach of helicopters and medical care from shore is usually not available.

The shipping company would like the OOSTERSCHELDE to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing tall ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. Some voyages are more challenging than others. With the different levels, we give an indication of how heavy the voyage can be. If you are unsure whether a voyage is suitable for you, it is important to contact shipping company OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.

  1. The 10 Best Things to Do on Cape Horn, Chile
