The ultimate survival guide for flying Ryanair

Lori Zaino

Flying Europe's low-cost carriers can be daunting, but everyone loves the feeling of snagging a super-cheap fare — especially if you can avoid spending more in extras and fees than the price of your original ticket.

Although the (in)famous Ryanair has made traveling around Europe a possibility for many, if you aren't aware of the rules, you could be left spending double or even triple the ticket price on extras — or worse, be denied boarding. This survival guide will help Ryanair flyers know the rules and offers tips and tricks to survive (and maybe even enjoy) a Ryanair experience.

Study your arrival airport

Ryanair is notorious for sending travelers to an airport in the middle of nowhere and classifying it as the nearest big city. For example, it lists Paris as a destination, but travelers unfamiliar with France may not realize that the BVA airport is in Beauvais, a 1.5-hour drive outside of Paris. So, if you want to see the City of Light, you should really consider flying another airline that goes to Paris Orly (ORY) or Charles de Gaulle (CDG).

The same is true with Milan Bergamo (BGY), a little over an hour by bus from Milan's Centrale station. Flying another airline to Milan Malpensa (MXP) or the even more convenient Milan Linate (LIN) is much simpler. Sure, Ryanair may have the less expensive ticket — but does the airline really get you where you want to go? Make sure to check Google Maps to find the airport before booking.

The good news here is that Ryanair can get you to destinations a little more off the beaten path. For example, the aforementioned Milan Bergamo airport is just a few minutes away from the beautiful Città Alta , Bergamo's stunning historic city center perched upon a hilltop. It's an idyllic alternative to the busy Milan.

You can also book a nonstop flight to Catania (CTA), one of Sicily's hubs, from Madrid (MAD) as opposed to flying Alitalia (at three times the price) with a layover in Rome. Perusing the Ryanair route map may encourage you to discover some unexpected and less touristy destinations for your next vacation.

Purchase checked baggage in advance

It's not uncommon for Ryanair passengers to pay more for their luggage than the fare itself, so make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules. Each traveler can check up to three bags weighing 20 kilograms (about 44 pounds) each. A 44-pound bag costs £/€25 (approximately $31) if purchased during the initial flight booking process, or £/€40 (around $50) if added online afterward. Rates at the airport desk are higher still and vary by route and season. Bags weighing more than 44 pounds will cost £/€11, or $14 per kilo, capped at 32 kilograms (about 70.5 pounds). An option to check a 10-kilogram bag (about 22 pounds) is now available, and prices range from £/€10 to £/€25 ($12 to $31) and it's also possible to check musical or sporting equipment.

Here are TPG' s rules for checking baggage with Ryanair:

  • Book and pay for your checked baggage when booking your ticket to avoid paying more later, either online or at the airport.
  • Always weigh your bag before traveling.
  • Pack a small travel scale to weigh it again before returning home.
  • Ensure your hold baggage doesn't exceed the maximum size of 81 x 119 x 119 centimeters (that's 31.8 x 46.8 x 46.8 inches).
  • Remember, travelers can share their purchased baggage allowance with other passengers on the same flight reservation when checking in together.

Know the carry-on baggage rules

Passengers who don't purchase priority boarding can take one bag for free to put under the seat with a maximum size of 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters (15.7 x 7.9 x 9.8 inches). Priority passengers can take one bag to put under the seat with a maximum size of 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters, plus an additional bag with a maximum size of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and 55 x 40 x 20 centimeters (21.6 x 15.7 x 7.9 inches). If you don't have priority boarding and you take a bag that's larger than 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters, you will be charged to check the bag at the gate starting at £/€25 (approximately $31).

Pay for your extras in advance

Besides making sure your luggage meets Ryanair's restrictions, it's a good idea to buy any other extras at the moment of booking so you won't face higher charges later. This includes, but isn't limited to, priority boarding and seat selection. Priority boarding starts at £/€6 (approximately $7.50) and allows you to board first, as well as take a carry-on plus a second bag (see size requirements above). This service is capped at 95 customers per flight, so if you think you want to add it on days after booking your ticket, it may no longer be available. If the service is sold out, the 10 kilogram (22 pound) checked bag may be the next best alternative option.

Some airports also feature a Fast Track option, which allows passengers to fast track through security in a dedicated lane. This service can be added to bookings (assuming you're departing from an airport that offers the service) starting at £/€4 (around $5).

Seat selection is also something best done ahead. Not only does it offer you a better choice of available seats (starting at £/€3 or $3.75, though extra legroom or front seats start at £/€7, or closer to $9), but it also allows you to check in online up to 60 days in advance, meaning you may even be able to print your boarding pass right after you book if the timing is right.

Consider a higher fare class

If you're planning on getting all the extras (seat selection, priority boarding and hold baggage), it may make sense to bundle it all together with a deal on a Plus or Flexi Plus fare. It could even be cheaper than adding all these things to your base fare separately. Plus fares include standard seat selection, free priority boarding and one hold bag. Flexi Plus fares come with seat selection, priority boarding, free airport check-in and flexible ticket changes, as well as Fast Track at participating airports and one checked bag. Ryanair also has special family fares if you're traveling with kids in tow.

Buy a Family Plus fare if flying with kids

Ryanair does offer a special Family Plus fare, which includes:

  • Priority boarding, a cabin bag and a personal item
  • Two 20-kilogram (44-pound) checked bags
  • Free seats for children (adults will have to pay to reserve their seats)

TPG U.K. contributor Emily Kanders Goldfischer weighed the value of the Family Plus fare and deemed it a solid value if your family needs to check that much baggage. If not, it may be best to add the extras you need or 10 kilogram (22 pound) bags onto a regular fare. Note that while you must purchase a ticket for children 2 to 12 years, reserved seating is free for them regardless of purchased fare class, and adults traveling with children pay a reduced reserved seating fee start at £/€4 (approx. $5).

Parents traveling with an infant are not eligible for a Family Plus fare, and there is no cabin bag allowance for an infant (considered 8 days to 23 months old) traveling on an adult's lap. But, a baby bag weighing up to 5 kilograms (11 pounds) with a maximum size of 45 x 35 x 20 centimeters (17.7 x 13.8 x 7.9 inches) may be carried by the accompanying adult in addition to their own cabin bag allowance. When reserving seats, look for a baby symbol, which shows infant-friendly seats.

Correct booking errors within 48 hours

If you've made any minor mistakes during the booking process, like misspelling a name, you have 48 hours to correct it free of charge. After that, expect to pay between £/€115 and £/€160 for a name or spelling change.

Skip Ryanair extras

While Ryanair wins for flight prices, it's best to avoid purchasing extras such as insurance, hotels, transportation and car rentals through the airline, as the terms can be restrictive and not especially user-friendly. There are plenty of other places you can go to search for affordable hotels and rental cars, and you can often find transportation with ease once you've landed. This way, if your flight plans change or your trip is delayed or canceled, you won't also have to deal with Ryanair's complicated customer service and restrictions when trying to get your money back or rebook your hotel, car rental or bus ticket. Check to see if the credit card you're using to book offers trip insurance or trip protections of any kind, or be prepared to purchase travel insurance elsewhere , as claiming with Ryanair insurance can be a trying experience.

Check in online

If Ryanair travelers don't check in online and print their boarding passes at home or download a mobile pass (when available), they must pay £/€55 (approximately $68) to check in at the airport and £/€20 (around $25) to print their boarding card at the airport.

Travelers who've paid extra for seat selection can check in online between 60 days and two hours in advance of the flight. Those with unreserved seats can check in between 48 hours and two hours before the flight. If you have paid for your seats and it's within 60 days, you may as well check in and print your pass (storing it in a safe place) directly after booking. Or, immediately complete the check-in process on your phone.

Get the right stamp

Some routes require passengers who are not citizens of the European Union or European Economic Area to have their travel documents checked and their boarding passes stamped at the Ryanair Visa/Document Check Desk. This desk can be found in different locations depending on the airport, so leave enough time to find the desk, wait in line and get this stamp before boarding. If you're unsure if you actually need the stamp (certain routes require it while others don't), always double check. If you need the stamp but didn't get it, you will be denied boarding. And, just in case you thought otherwise: Ryanair does not care if you miss your flight. However, if you have been denied boarding and miss your flight because of an absent stamp or another travel document issue, you can call this number to argue with the company about it: 353-1248-0860. Best of luck.

Be prepared and manage expectations

If you haven't flown Ryanair in a while — or ever — you need to be prepared for what's ahead. You'll be charged for food and water during the flight, there are inflight announcements every few minutes (no, we don't want to purchase lottery tickets, Ryanair), your seat won't recline and people start lining up hours before boarding. Be prepared for airplane clappers upon landing.

travel requirements ryanair

But if you pack smart, you can enjoy a somewhat more comfortable flight. Don't forget to bring:

  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Water (post-security)
  • A neck pillow, if you plan to sleep
  • A travel scarf or blanket, if you get cold

If boarding early is important to you, get ready to line up. Even if you have priority boarding, it's important to remember that as many as 94 other people will also have priority boarding, so plan to be at your gate with plenty of time, if you'd like to board first.

Ultimately, flying Ryanair is really about managing expectations. When you only paid $30 for your flight, you aren't having a high-end experience because you haven't paid for such luxuries. Take it in stride and try to relax and enjoy the flight. If it's important to you to have a less hectic, more upscale flying experience, stock up those points and miles and use them to book business class on a European full-fare carrier such as British Airways or KLM.

Read the fine print

Your Ryanair guide from TPG can help you navigate your next trip with the budget carrier, but airlines can change their rules at any time, so it's important to always read the conditions of your ticket before purchasing. It's also a good idea to know and understand your rights as a flyer in case of delays, flight cancellations and strikes. Above all, this guide should ensure you're prepared for your typical Ryanair flight and won't have to shell out for silly fees. And just remember, when the lottery ticket announcements are raging and your feet are squished under your personal item -- all that extra money you saved can go toward a fancy hotel room, shopping or dining at your destination.

When most people hear the term ultra-low-cost carrier, the first thing they do is cringe. The second thing they do is probably think about an airline like Ryanair .

Ryanair is an Irish airline headquartered in Dublin , and it has long been a low-cost carrier that people love to complain about.

Sometimes it’s the extra fees for everything from water to baggage fees to seat assignments that brings out the anger. Other times it’s the operational inconsistencies that have led the airline to delay and cancel hundreds and hundreds of flights over the past couple of years.

Either way, you can consistently find social media littered with disparaging comments about Ryanair. Unfortunately, much of that anger is caused by a lack of understanding .

Many of those customers just didn’t know what they were getting into when they booked a Ryanair flight.

Here, we’ll take a look at the boarding process that Ryanair uses for its flights, so when it comes time for you to fly, you won’t have any surprises when you get to the gate.

Knowing what to expect with boarding, fees, and delays will help you to remain calm if something goes wrong. Not only will your travel day be less stressful, but you can help improve the day of everyone around you, too.

Ryanair Boarding Process

Ryanair uses one of the most basic boarding procedures of any airline in the world.

There are just 2 groups: priority boarding and general boarding . Sounds simple, right?

Well, although the 2-group process is simple in nature, it’s very important that you know how boarding works … or you’ll find yourself at the end of a very long line and checking your carry-on bag.

Ryanair does things very differently from the airlines that you normally fly, and it helps to be prepared so you aren’t caught off guard (like a certain Upgraded Points writer was on his first Ryanair flight). Let’s just say I now know the ropes!

Hot Tip: When flying with Ryanair, knowing which boarding group you’re in isn’t as important as the timing it uses for boarding — but let’s start with the 2 groups so you can understand how to choose which one you want to be in.

As we said before, there is nothing to decode and no guessing when it comes to the Ryanair boarding groups.

Priority boarding is just that: passengers who have purchased priority boarding are able to board with this group. There is no way to earn priority boarding other than by purchasing it .

Priority boarding can be purchased by itself or as a package. Here are the packages that include priority boarding:

Each of these packages includes other items as well, and pricing varies by both package contents and the length of the flight.

General boarding, again, has no surprises.

This group simply consists of all other passengers who did not purchase priority boarding or one of the packages that include it.

Bottom Line: There is no extra cost for general boarding, so passengers who are trying to save money will be in this group. This group will contain the majority of passengers for most Ryanair flights.

Ryanair cabin bags

We are going to touch briefly on the topic of cabin bags because it’s not only an area of confusion when flying with Ryanair, but also because it’s tied pretty directly to priority boarding.

Ryanair recently changed its cabin bag procedures:

  • For a basic ticket, you are now only allowed to bring 1 personal item (cabin bag) onboard, and it must fit in the space under the seat ahead of you.
  • If you want to bring a larger cabin bag that will go into the overhead bin, you must purchase the right to do so. Usually, this is done with a package that includes priority boarding as well.

The packages we mentioned above that include priority boarding also all include 2 cabin bags.

Expect long lines — really long lines .

With only 2 boarding groups (and thus 2 boarding lines), these lines can get extremely long well before boarding is scheduled to begin.

If you walk up to the gate right at boarding time (whether you have priority boarding or not), you will be at the end of a very long line.

When flying with Ryanair, it is best to get to the gate and be prepared to wait in line well before your flight time .

Hot Tip: Although the boarding lines can be long, Ryanair boards its flights quite quickly, and it has a goal of closing the boarding gate 20 minutes before departure . If you’re used to cutting it close with the doors closing at 10 minutes like on many other carriers, you need to be careful not to miss your flight on Ryanair!

At certain smaller airports (currently 15+), Ryanair boards its flights via bus rather than the jet bridge, which can cause a bit of a mess for the boarding groups.

If you are first in line for priority boarding, you will be first onto the bus — but unless you position yourself strategically, you will be one of the last people off of the bus and onto the plane.

Similarly, if you are toward the end of the priority boarding line, your bus might have some passengers from general boarding on it. Those passengers may end up getting onto the plane before you, even though you paid to board in the first group .

Ryanair has always limited the number of larger cabin bags on each flight to 90 bags  because it knows that 90 bags will fit in the overhead bins. Gate agents will count as people board, and after 90 bags go by, everyone else will have to gate-check their larger bags .

Now that Ryanair requires the purchase of a second cabin bag, theoretically, your second bag is guaranteed to go on the plane with you.

In practice, this probably works out most of the time, since Ryanair usually won’t have more than 90 passengers purchasing the second cabin bag for a single flight.

In an odd case where it does though, we have to assume it will gate-check the remaining bags even though passengers paid to take them on board. Avoiding this scenario is another great reason to get in line early.

Bottom Line: Unless you’re really on a tight budget, it makes sense to buy one of the packages that include priority boarding. In addition to getting into the priority boarding group, the Priority +2 Cabin Bags package is one of the only ways you can take a full-size carry-on bag onto the plane. That package starts at just £8 for a one-way flight — that’s not very much to pay for a few perks on your flight (including not having to check a bag).

In most of our other boarding process pieces, we have gone over the best ways to earn points in each airline’s loyalty program. We can’t really do that for Ryanair — although it does have a loyalty program, it does not use points or miles, and it’s nothing like the traditional loyalty programs you’re familiar with.

Instead, we’ll look at the details of the myRyanair program and see what benefits it may have for you.

It’s free to join, and you can often get a flight discount coupon of around €10 to €15 when you sign up … so why not add it to your list of airline loyalty programs?

The benefits of the myRyanair program include the ability to earn flight credit, faster bookings, faster check-in, the ability to save searches, and the ability to use the Erasmus Student Network discount. Obviously, the biggest benefit would be the potential to earn flight credits.

Unfortunately, Ryanair doesn’t provide exact details of how to earn rewards in the myRyanair program. Instead, it says that it will tailor rewards to each individual member.

We don’t have any secrets about how to earn larger denomination flight credits — most likely, the more you fly with the airline and the more you spend on ancillary fees, the faster you’ll earn rewards.

Bottom Line: It is important to remember that the €10 bonus you get for signing up (or the €15 flight credit earned from the myRyanair program) isn’t as small as it seems. When flight prices are regularly under €50 one-way, even a small discount is a good portion of your flight cost.

Ryanair has over 500 planes and flies to more than 230 different destinations . Both by total passengers carried and the number of international passengers, Ryanair is the largest airline in Europe .

If you want to travel by air and you’re looking for the least expensive way to get around Europe, chances are you’ll find yourself on a Ryanair flight in the near future.

Contrary to what you may think, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. With sub-$30 fares between London and several continental European cities, when it comes to price, Ryanair is really hard to beat .

We can’t help you with delays or cancellations, and we can’t help if you need to purchase a snack onboard — but we can help lower the stress at the boarding gate.

By knowing the boarding procedures and what you will pay in fees, you’ll be fully prepared for your flight and able to happily move on to your next destination.

The more you travel, the more you will find yourself on ultra-low-cost carriers around the world. Ryanair is just another of these carriers.

Will it be as comfortable as a mainline carrier like British Airways or Lufthansa? Probably not — but maybe we should take a minute to appreciate that for less than what it costs to check a bag on a domestic U.S. flight,  Ryanair will get you from one country to another safely in under 45 minutes . If that’s not a great value, we don’t know what is.

Before packing your backpack, it’s essential to review Ryanair’s hand luggage policy. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Ryanair Hand Luggage Rules: Can You Bring a Backpack on Board?

Ryanair Hand Luggage Rules: Can You Bring a Backpack on Board?

Backpack as Hand Luggage

Now that we know the basics of Ryanair’s hand luggage policy, let’s focus on backpacks specifically.

Definition of a Backpack

A backpack is considered a type of hand luggage that is worn on the back and has two shoulder straps, according to Ryanair’s policy. This distinguishes it from a shoulder or tote bag.

Ryanair Hand Luggage Rules: Can You Bring a Backpack on Board?

Types of Backpacks Allowed

Ryanair does not have any specific restrictions on the type of backpack allowed as hand luggage. However, it’s essential to keep in mind the size and weight restrictions mentioned earlier.

Backpack Size and Weight Restrictions

Your backpack must fit within Ryanair’s maximum hand luggage dimensions of 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm and not exceed the 10 kg weight limit.

Consequences of Not Meeting the Requirements

If your backpack does not meet Ryanair’s hand luggage requirements, you may be asked to check it in, incurring additional fees. Keep in mind that checked baggage fees can be much higher than hand luggage fees, so it’s crucial to weigh and measure your backpack before leaving for the airport.

Packing Tips

Now that we know the requirements for carrying a backpack as hand luggage on Ryanair, let’s discuss some packing tips to help you make the most of your space and weight limit.

How to Pack Efficiently

Packing efficiently is key to maximizing your hand luggage space. One tip is to roll your clothes instead of folding them, which saves space and reduces wrinkles. Another tip is to use packing cubes or compression bags to compress your items further.

What to Pack in Your Backpack

When packing your backpack, focus on essentials, including a change of clothes, toiletries, medication, important documents, or electronics. Remember to keep liquids under 100ml and in a clear, resealable plastic bag.

Tips for Reducing Backpack Weight

Reducing your backpack’s weight is essential to ensure it meets Ryanair’s 10 kg weight limit. Pack only what you need for the duration of your trip, and wear your heaviest or bulkiest items, such as a jacket or boots, to reduce weight.

Additional Fees and Options

To avoid additional fees for exceeding the weight or size limit, weigh and measure your backpack before leaving for the airport. You can also purchase priority boarding to ensure your hand luggage is allowed on board and avoid any last-minute surprises at the gate. If you need more space than allowed, consider purchasing checked luggage or upgrading to a higher fare class, but keep in mind that fees can be high.

Other Hand Luggage Options

If your backpack does not meet Ryanair’s hand luggage requirements, there are other options for carrying items on board.

Small Handbag or Laptop Bag

Ryanair allows one additional small bag on board, such as a handbag or laptop bag. This bag must fit under the seat in front of you and cannot exceed 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm in size.

What to Do if You Need More Space Than Allowed

If you need more space than allowed for hand luggage, you can purchase checked luggage or upgrade to a higher fare class that includes additional baggage allowance. Check Ryanair’s website for fees and restrictions.

Checking Luggage

If you need to check luggage, there are different options available.

Different Options for Checked Luggage

Ryanair offers different options for checked luggage, including a 10 kg bag and a 20 kg bag. Fees vary depending on the route and time of booking.

Checked luggage must not exceed 20 kg in weight and 81 cm x 119 cm x 119 cm in size.

Fees for Checked Luggage

Fees for checked luggage vary depending on the route and time of booking. It’s essential to check Ryanair’s website for the most up-to-date information.

Tips for Efficient Packing of Checked Luggage

Efficient packing of checked luggage can help you save space and money. Consider using packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space, and weigh your luggage before you leave for the airport to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Personal Experience: Overcoming the Challenge of Packing Light for Ryanair

I used to be an overpacker when it came to traveling. I would bring multiple outfits for each day, extra shoes, and all sorts of unnecessary items “just in case.” However, when I booked a trip with Ryanair, I quickly realized that I needed to change my ways.

I decided to bring a backpack as my hand luggage to avoid the additional fees for checked luggage. At first, I struggled with fitting all of my necessities into a small backpack, but with some research and effort, I was able to make it work.

I learned that packing efficiently was key, and that I needed to prioritize the essentials. I packed versatile clothing items that could be mixed and matched, and I only brought one pair of shoes that could be worn for different occasions. I also made sure to pack only travel-sized toiletries to save space and weight.

On the day of my flight, I was nervous that my backpack would not meet the size and weight requirements, but with careful planning and packing, I was able to pass through security with ease.

In the end, I was proud of myself for overcoming the challenge of packing light and traveling with just a backpack. It made my trip more enjoyable and stress-free, and I saved money in the process. I would highly recommend this approach to anyone traveling with Ryanair.

In conclusion, Ryanair allows passengers to carry one backpack as hand luggage, provided it meets the size and weight requirements. Make sure to pack efficiently and keep in mind any additional fees for exceeding the limits or not meeting the requirements. If you need more space, consider purchasing checked luggage or upgrading your fare class. By following these tips, you can ensure a hassle-free travel experience with your backpack on Ryanair. Remember to check Ryanair’s website for the most up-to-date information on hand luggage policies and fees.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Carry-On & Personal Item Size? (2023)

Maybe you have your first Ryanair trip coming up, and you might wonder about how strict the airline is about carry-on and personal item size.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Carry-On & Personal Item Size?

Let me fill you in on some of Ryanair’s current rules and policies and then I’ll answer common questions I hear about them.

If you want to skip the article and grab a bag that will work on Ryanair Airlines, check out these two!

This great carry-on bag  is for travelers that want to get the best value out of their luggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag  could be the last carry-on bag you ever purchase!

Let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

How Strict is Ryanair With Its Carry-on Baggage Policy?

Ryanair is considered to be very strict among travelers regarding its carry-on item policies, and they maintain that if you are allowed only a small personal bag onboard, you’ll need to make sure it falls within size dimensions of 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40cm x 25cm x 20cm). Your bag must fit in Ryanair’s sizer and so it can be easily stored underneath the seat in front of you. Ryanair recommends carefully measuring your carry-on and personal items before traveling. Additional carry-on bag purchases are available, starting at €6 (just over $6 USD).

Ryanair’s Carry-on Item Policy

Including handles and wheels, your personal bag measurements on Ryanair flights should not exceed:

15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 x 25 x 20 cm), or 31 total linear inches/85 linear cm (l + w + h).

*According to Ryanair’s website:

“ Priority & 2 Cabin Bags [options] give [you] the benefit of boarding the plane via the Priority Queue and carrying [your] small personal bag (15” x 9”x 7” / 40x20x25cm) and 22lb/10kg wheelie bag (21” x 15” x 7” / 55x40x20cm) with [you] on board. This will mean you won’t need to wait for your bag at the terminal at the destination. If Priority is sold out, you can purchase our 22 lb/10kg Check-in Bag .”

Note that paying for your bags online ahead of time tends to be less expensive and can help you avoid paying checked bag fees at the airport or at your gate.

Take some proactive steps beforehand and invest in some Ryanair-compliant carry-on luggage, so that you can travel and relax.

How Can I Measure My Carry-on Bag to Make Sure It Fits on a Ryanair Flight?

To help you verify your baggage conforms with Ryanair’s cabin bag size restrictions, the carrier recommends taking note of bag sizers at airport locations that feature its required 15″ x 9″ x 7″ dimensions.

It’s also a good idea to measure your personal bag before you leave for the airport to ensure that your entire bag, along with the wheels and handles, falls within Ryanair’s carry-on size requirements.

It’s important to remember that the three dimensional measurements together – length + height + width – cannot add up to more than 31 linear inches/85 linear cm. If you happen to be traveling with a soft-sided or expandable suitcase, you may want to measure your bag after it’s packed to ensure it still complies.

My Ryanair-compliant Luggage Recommendations

Need some suggestions for carry-on luggage that I would recommend for flying with Ryanair? I personally recommend the following Ryanair-compliant carry-on bags because of the carrier’s strictness with its luggage policies.

This is a great carry-on bag if you’re looking for long-lasting value out of your travel baggage investment.

This Travel Pro bag is one you’ll love (I know I love it!), and it just might end up being the last carry-on bag you’ll ever purchase.

Ryanair’s Carry-on Baggage Allowance

What is Ryanair’s carry-on baggage allowance? All Ryanair passengers are allowed a free carry-on item (personal bag) that needs to fit under the seat in front of them. Additional carry-on bags are available for an upcharge.

Items that don’t fit into a sizing device or which are considered to be oversized will need to be checked, with gate-checked baggage fees assessed accordingly . Gate-checked bag fees are €/£ 69.99/~$70 USD per.

You can see all the details regarding Ryanair’s checked bag policies here .

Bringing Carry-on Liquid Items Onto Ryanair Flights

You are allowed to bring liquid items onboard Ryanair flights in your carry-on baggage as long as they pass through security checkpoints. Items in violation of regulations will be confiscated.

Toiletries and items in the form of liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 3.4 fl. Oz. (100 ml/100g) or less must be packed neatly in a clear, resealable one-quart (1 liter) plastic bag, no more than 7.8 in x 7.8 in (20 cm x 20 cm) in size. Try these Ziploc one-quart baggies . One plastic bag per passenger and you must be able to completely close your plastic bag and be able to fit it into your hand baggage; your bag of liquids must be taken out of your hand baggage to be screened separately.

Duty-free liquids, aerosols, and gels of more than 3.4 oz. /  100 ml are allowed to be brought on board Ryanair flights, as long as they are contained in a duty-free issued Secure Tamper-Evident Bag (STEB).

You’ll find plenty more information here on our TravelontheFly site about what items you are and aren’t allowed to bring on a plane with you.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Your Carry-on Size?

You shouldn’t have any problems at all as long as your item(s) fit in the sizer at the airport or underneath the seat in front of you.

To make your flight as worry-free as possible, I suggest complying with Ryanair’s policies. For more room in your carry-on bag, if you need a new carry-on bag that will fit Ryanair’s (and other carriers’) guidelines, get this bag and don’t have to worry about it ever again.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Your Carry-on Item’s Weight?

Most airlines are not concerned with carry-on/personal item weight, though Ryanair offers two paid options for carry-on bags (10 kg and 20 kg, starting at €/£ 12.99/~$13 USD per). Ryanair is more concerned with spaces in the cabin where carry-on items should be able to be stowed comfortably. Meeting the size dimensions of your personal bag and carry-on items mentioned above should cover all your bases.

Should I Risk Flying on Ryanair With an Oversized Carry-on Item?

Should you risk flying on Ryanair with an oversized carry-on bag? I say, “Why take the chance?” Most frequent flyers would probably agree with me. Do you like paying extra fees?

If your bag is slightly larger than Ryanair’s specified size dimensions, you’ll likely be OK. Worst-case scenario if your carry-on is too large, is that you will have to check your bag at the gate and be charged ~$70 USD for checking an oversized bag at the gate. PRO TIP – You have a better chance of getting away with a slightly larger piece of luggage if your carry-on is soft-sided. That‘s why I have highlighted and pointed you toward soft-sided bags like this one here . They are a little easier to squeeze into tight spots, including into the overhead bins on a plane!

Ryanair Checked Baggage Fees

Ryanair allows each passenger to purchase a 22 lb (10 kg) bag and/or up to three 44 lb (20 kg) checked bags per flight.

I travel with a bag that is slightly larger than many airline regulations and I have never been asked to check it. I can’t guarantee that you won’t be asked to.

Your best bet is to travel with baggage that is within Ryanair’s size regulations, and then you will never have to worry about it!

You can read more about Ryanair’s checked bag policies here , as you’re preparing for a specific upcoming flight.

Where Can I Find a Quality Travel Bag That’s Within Ryanair’s Carry-on Item Limitations?

I highly recommend this great carry-on bag that is an incredible value for the cost.

And this Travel Pro bag is an excellent choice for even the most particular travelers.

How Strict Is Ryanair With Its “One Personal Bag” Policy?

How strict is Ryanair regarding its “one personal bag” policy? Ryanair is considered to be quite strict in regard to item sizes and weights for its passengers. One small personal bag is allowed per passenger (e.g., purse, handbag, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack, and medically necessary items). Technically speaking, Ryanair expects personal items to be 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 cm x 25 cm x 20 cm) or less in size, but as long as your personal bag can easily be carried and stored underneath the sizer or underneath the seat in front of you, Ryanair representatives probably won’t ask you about it.

Ryanair’s Personal Bag Policy

What about Ryanair’s official personal bag policy? Your personal item ( e.g., purse, shoulder bag, backpack, diaper bag, etc.) must fit under the seat in front of you, and dimensions should not exceed 15” l x 9” w x 7” h (40 cm x 25 cm x 20 cm) .

Carrying Additional Items Onto Ryanair Flights

In addition to your personal bag and paid carry-on bags onboard Ryanair flights, you are also allowed to bring small items, such as a jacket/sweatshirt, blanket, umbrella, book, strollers*, car seats, diaper bags, duty-free items, a reasonably sized stuffed animal , food/drink purchased past the security checkpoint, crutches, strollers, camera, etc. These won’t count as personal items, unless they’re larger things that take up space overhead or underneath a seat, like purses, shoulder bags, backpacks, briefcases, large camera cases, etc.

Is the First Checked Bag Free on Ryanair Flights?

Your first checked bag is NOT free on Ryanair flights, but each passenger can check in up to 3 checked bags weighing 44 lbs (20 kg) each. According to Ryanair’s website:

“Adding the 20kg Check-in Bag costs between €/£ 20.99 (~$21 USD) and €/£ 59.99 (~$60 USD) depending on the route and travel date selected. The pricing for the Excess baggage is €/£9 ($9 USD) per each added kilogram (2.2 lbs), if purchased online during check-in 2 hours before departure.  *Higher bag fees apply when checked bags are purchased via a Ryanair call center, at airport ticket desks, during peak periods and on selected routes.”

Ryanair DAC is a Dublin-based Irish airline founded in 1984. Its primary operational bases are at Dublin airport and London Stansted airport. The carrier, known for its low airfares, operates throughout a network that spans Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa.

So, How Strict is Ryanair About Carry-on and Personal Items?

Ryanair passengers are allowed to take one personal bag on board for free, and Ryanair is considered among the stricter airlines in regard to carry-on item size. Additional carry-on items may be purchased. Your free personal bag needs to fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Invest in carry-on baggage that complies with Ryanair’s 15” x 9” x 7” size requirements, like this one .

In case you choose to take a risk by bringing a larger bag onto a Ryanair flight, be sure to at least use a soft-sided bag so you’ll be able to better navigate it into a tight space. If your carry-on or personal item is deemed to be “oversized,” you’ll likely be charged a gate bag check-in fee of $70 per.

Ryanair Requirements

For customers that choose to use Ryanair (FR) content via Universal API:

Agents do not need to register with the vendor for Ryanair content for provisioning or credentials.

Provisioning / Credentials

No agency provisioning with the carrier.

Ryanair UK Limited

On January 25, 2024, Travelport supports Ryanair UK Limited flights within the Ryanair API. Ryanair UK is a subsidiary of low-cost carrier group Ryanair Holdings, with flight operations commencing in March 2019. This is not a separate adapter. Therefore, this comes with the following limitations:

In Universal API, when “FR” and “RK” flights are combined, the PNR confirmation is the same. However, the airline code is different based on the selected carrier.

Ancillary services and seat assignments cannot be added post-book.

All rules, fare types, and fare type restrictions are the same as "FR" coded flights.

Itinerary / Passenger Type support

ACH Supports the following Itinerary types for Ryanair :

  • One Way - One way point to point direct
  • Round Trip - No connections or multi-city itineraries

Ryanair currently returns Direct/Non-Stop segments but does not return:

  • Connecting segments
  • Multi Leg Segments
  • Open Jaw routes

Ryanair does not have any code-shares with other network carriers; however during peak seasons, they do induct wet leased aircraft in their network for more than 60 days at a time. This causes those flights to be required to be noted as code shares (operated by a different carrier) per U.S. Department of Transportation regulations.

An enhancement is being introduced in Jan 2017 that blocks shopping for any Spanish Domestic itineraries from any Point of Sale. If a user searches using FareShop or Carrier Specific Availability, no Spanish Domestic routes will return. If a user searches using Neutral Availability, Spanish Domestic routes will return; however an error will return if those segments are selected in the booking process.

Passenger Types

The following passenger types are supported by Ryanair:

Window Shopping

Ryanair supports window shopping (search widening). Ryanair allows for a search expanded to 7 days total.

Cabins, Fares, and Fare Families

ACH will return the lowest fare options.

Ryanair supports a single cabin class.

Fares Returned

  • Supports one way and round trip. Multi-city should throw an error
  • Child fares are returned. As of January 2014 these are not discounted/ same as adult fares.

Taxes and Fees

  • As of February 5, 2015, Ryanair will not return taxes.
  • Spanish domestics discounts are not available as these itineraries are blocked.
  • Ryanair does NOT charge any payment processing fee when booking with a credit card.
  • INF fees return per segment/per infant. The fee applies to the corresponding passenger/Segment.

The booking fee for Ryanair is a 3EUR charge — charged per passenger, per sector. See the associated Product Advisory .

RyanAir will charge a GDS fee for all non-Ryanair.com bookings.

All bookings will have GDS fee that will be applicable per passenger per segment.

GDS Fee is loaded for all 11 currencies that is supported by RyanAir.

VAT Tax (Value Added Tax)

A value-added tax, known in some countries as a goods and services tax, is a type of tax that is assessed incrementally. It is levied on the price of a product or service at each stage of production, distribution, or sale to the end consumer. This tax applies to the GDS fee and also ancillary services for domestic travel in the countries listed below.

Fare Families

RyanAir supports and uses the following fare families:

Plus (formerly LeisurePlus)

1 - small cabin bags fits under seat

1 - free 20kg checked in bag (BG__20FR) (BBBG SSR)

1 - free reserved seating (any standard seat - subject to availability)

1 - free airport check-in (AACI SSR)

  • An SSR code of SURE will be automatically added to all Plus bookings and will be returned in the book response. The SSR code advises all Ryanair airports that the passenger has purchased Plus.
  • The 20kilo bag and reserved seat must be selected at the time of booking, if these are added after the booking has been made the customer will be required to pay for these services.
  • Below error will be thrown if Plus fare is combined with any other fare besides another Plus fare.

<Errors>

<Error RecordID="NNSFR:Ryanair" Type="922" ShortText="The carrier does not support multiple booking class in an itinerary">The requested itinerary or fare combination is not supported by the carrier</Error>

</Errors>

FlexiPlus (formerly BusinessPlus)

Fast Track Airport service (TSSYPT) (FAST SSR) *please note - Subject to availability at the origin/destination airport

Priority and two cabin bags (PF SSR)

All seats are offered free of charge

Free airport check-in (AACI SSR)

Flight, date and route changes permitted without flight change fee – fare difference will be paid by the passenger (on Ryanair.com)

An additional non-option SSR of (PLUS) will be added to the booking to indicate it is a FlexiPlus Fare.

Multiple FlexiPlus fares may be offered per route, however not all FlexiPlus fares may not be offered via the API. Ryanair retains some fares exclusively for their website.

Note : Below error returns if Plus fare is combined with any other fare besides another Plus fare.

FlexiPlus Fare Booking Rules

The following rules need to be followed while creating bookings on ACH:

  • An itinerary cannot be created with a combination of Regular(Y) or FlexiPlus(B) fares. Such a mixed itinerary will fail pricing and booking.
  • When selecting a FlexiPlus fare itinerary the included options need to be selected for the booking. ACH takes care of this by selecting the free options by default, if not requested.
  • The BaseFare, Taxes and payment amount displayed in the Booking response may be modified compared to Price response taking into account the fixed flexi fare.

Priority and 2 Cabin Bags will now be available without an additional purchase.

Free select standard seat.

REGU SSR indicates bookings done with Regular fare.

Priority and 2 Cabin Bags will now only be available with an additional purchase, even when a Premium seat is purchased.

Fare Family Use

  • Fares from different fare families may NOT be mixed in the same itinerary.
  • Fare family information is returned in the ACH responses. (//PricedItinerary/AirItineraryPricingInfo/FareInfos/FareInfo/FareReference/text())

RBD (Reservations/Booking Designator) Mapping

Multiple class bookings.

M, N and T are excluded/blocked to the Travelport Universal API.

Private / Negotiated / Corporate Fares

Ryanair does not support private, negotiated or corporate fare modifiers. However they have discounted fares.

Passenger and Contact Details

Passenger details.

Ryanair requires the following information from all passengers as mandatory data to create a booking.

Note : Ryanair returns passenger's NamePrefix, FirstName, MiddleName, and Surname in the API response. However, they do not use the MiddleName while displaying the passenger details in FR official website. Because Ryanair is not using the passenger's middle name (except for Spanish domestic flights, which is not supported through ACH), the Ryanair itinerary may reflect the name information in this order: Title, First Name, Last Name, Middle Name. It is correct in the API request and response, and in the Ryanair system. For example, Name added through Universal API

Prefix="Ms" First="JANE" Middle="LEOKADIA" Last="DOE"

On the Ryanair Website:

Ms JANE DOE LEOKADIA

Passenger Titles

ACH Ryanair adapter supports the Standard ACH Passenger Name Prefixes.

  • For Adult, ACH converts the requested name prefixes to titles in uppercase and returns in ACH response.
  • For Child, ACH converts the requested name prefix to CHD title in uppercase and returns in ACH response.
  • For Infants, no titles will be returned in ACH response.

Below are the expected request and response titles:

The adapter also supports the following additional name prefixes:

Contact Details

The Ryanair Air API supports the following contact information:

For the Lead Passenger

  • Mobile phone
  • Office phone
  • One email address is required
  • A Home phone contact is required and FR only accept a single home phone.

For all other passengers

  • Only one phone number per passenger is supported.
  • Email addresses are not supported

Travel Agency/Booker Contact Details

The Ryanair Air API supports the following contact information for Travel Agency/Booker (Type=T in BookingContact):

Note : Ryanair has indicated this information is mandatory, however, there is no validation on the carrier side. If missing, the booking can still be created and the information will not be sent to Ryanair for the Travel Agency/Booker Contact.

For the *Lead Passenger Only*

Travel Agency/Booker Contact Phone Number:

Home phone (6.PLT) - If only one "Home" phone number is provided in the PNR, the Travel Agency/Booker Contact Type "T" section is not created and no Travel Agency/Booker contact details are sent to Ryanair

Office phone (7.PLT) - If only "Office" phone number is provided in the PNR, the Travel Agency/Booker Contact Type "T" section is not created and no Travel Agency/Booker contact details are sent to Ryanair

Other phone (Agency phone for POS) (8.PLT)

If only "Other" phone (Agency phone for POS) is provided in the PNR, this number reflects as both (6.PLT) and (8.PLT) in the ACH response due to home phone number logic for Ryanair

If "Home" and "Other" phone (Agency phone for POS) (8.PLT) is provided in the PNR, these phone numbers reflect the correct mapping as "Home" (6.PLT) and "Other" (8.PLT) in the ACH response

All Phone contacts will return with PhoneUseType as *5.PUT*

Email address required for the Travel Agency/Booker:

The second email entered in the request from the POS is sent as the Travel Agency/Booker contact information.

If this information is not provided, the booking can still be created and the Travel Agency/Booker contact email will not be sent to Ryanair.

Ryanair will send an email receipt/itinerary to this email address when entered.

Address required for the Travel Agency/Booker:

The fulfillment address in the request from the POS is sent as the Travel Agency/Booker contact information to the carrier.

If the fulfillment delivery address is not provided, ACH will send the delivery address as the Travel Agency/Booker contact information to the carrier

Required Passenger Information

Ryanair does not support collecting Secure Flight and APIS information through Universal API. Only supported during web check-in.

Frequent Flyer Support

Ryanair does not have a frequent flyer program and they do not support any other carrier’s frequent flyer programs. If frequent flyer information is sent in the ACH request it will not be forwarded on to the carrier.

Currency and Fulfillment Support

Currency support.

Ryanair supports the following currencies:

Ryan Air permits currency override for all itineraries as long as the requested currency is on the Ryanair supported currencies list. If an ACH request is sent with a currency override of a currency other than that on the supported currencies list, ACH will return the following warning in the ACH response and the shop results will be returned in the currency of the origin airport.

<Warning RecordID="NNSFR : ACH Ryanair Adapter" ShortText="The requested currency is not supported by the adapter" Type="739">Invalid currency code.</Warning>

Country Currency Overrides

For the following countries Ryanair does not support the default national currency, and the following overrides apply for itineraries originating in the countries.

If a user decides to use another currency other than EUR to replace the RON or HRK or BGN currencies, he/she may do so as long as it is a currency on the supported currencies list.

No credit or debit card fee is applied at time of booking.

Ryanair aircraft - know their baggage policy

Budget air travel in Europe opens a whole world of opportunities. But with so many hidden costs, your trip can end up being way more expensive than expected. Make sure you don’t get caught out with our complete guide to Ryanair’s baggage policy.

Key Takeaway With Ryanair, you can bring one cabin bag no larger than 40 x 20 x 25 cm (15.75 x 7.87 x 9.84 inches) . Priority customers can take an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) to go in the overhead locker. You can also pay to check a 10 kg (22 lbs) or 20 kg (44 lbs) bag . Prices vary for different flight routes.

Ready to unpack Ryanair’s baggage policy? Keep reading to find out everything you need to know for a low-turbulence airport experience, including what you can take on board, what you can check, and what costs extra.

Ryanair’s basic fare

The basic ticket for Ryanair is your most budget-friendly option. All passengers with Ryanair are entitled to bring one small bag onboard with them . The airline is known for being strict with bags that don’t meet their policies, so you’ll want to follow their guidelines as closely as possible to avoid any extra charges. Within reason, any duty-free items don’t contribute towards your cabin baggage allowance.

Your bag must be smaller than 40 x 20 x 25 cm (15.75 x 7.87 x 9.84 inches) and you must be able to fit it under the seat in front of you. There are no specifications on the weight limit, so in theory, you could pack as much as you want. Just be mindful that you’ll have to carry your heavy bag around the airport until you board.

If you’re traveling with a baby, you can take up to two pieces of baby equipment per child, including one stroller and a choice of a booster seat, car seat, or travel cot. Lap infants are allowed a 5 kg (11 lbs) baby bag, as long as it isn’t bigger than 45 x 35 x 20 cm (17.72 x 13.78 x 7.87 inches).

Ryanair priority boarding

You could also purchase a Ryanair priority ticket. You’ll get to join the priority boarding queue at the gate and take an additional 10 kg (22 lbs) cabin bag. It can’t measure more than 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.65 x 15.75 x 7.87 inches) and must be able to fit in the overhead locker.

You can purchase priority boarding when you book your flight. This costs between €6-36 depending on your route and travel dates. If you want to add priority boarding after your booking or at the airport, it could cost anywhere between €20-38.

If you’re only taking hand luggage and tend to pack a heavy washbag, you’ll need to keep in mind current EU Security Requirements. This can vary depending on your departure airport and, thanks to new scanning technology , some airports no longer require a maximum liquid policy. You should always check the specific requirements for the airports you’ll be flying from.

The general guidance from Ryanair is that no liquid container can be larger than 100 ml (3.38 oz) . All your liquids should fit into a clear, resealable plastic bag no larger than 20 x 20 cm (7.87 x 7.87 inches), with a capacity of up to 1 liter (33.8 oz). You must have your bag separate from your hand luggage for screening and you should be able to seal it when it’s full.

If you’re traveling with a baby or have a medical condition that requires liquid medicine, you can bring on as much medicine, baby milk, powdered milk, sterilized water, and baby food as you like. It doesn’t need to be in a clear plastic bag, but you should have it ready for inspection.

Other airport security considerations

The items you can bring on board and the items you can put in checked luggage vary by airport and airline. If you put the wrong item in the wrong bag, you could be denied boarding or asked to abandon your item. Ryanair has a full list of prohibited items on their website.

Putting cabin baggage in the hold

If your bag doesn’t meet Ryanair’s requirements, they may ask you to check your bag and pay the necessary charges. On very busy flights, Ryanair may not have space on the aircraft for everyone’s bags. If this happens and you’ve purchased bags to go in the overhead lockers, they may ask you to check it in the hold instead. In either of these situations, you’ll need to pick up your bag from baggage reclaim before going through customs.

Ryanair’s checked luggage fee

Want to pack more for your vacation? You could also consider checking a bag. A 10 kg (22 lbs) checked bag could cost between €11.99-29.99 at the time of booking and €23.99-35.99 after booking or at the airport. A 20 kg (44 lbs) bag costs between €18.99-29.99 at the time of booking and €44.99-59.99 after booking or at the airport. You can buy up to three 20 kg bags per booking.

Overweight and Oversize Policy

If you’ve purchased checked luggage, you must drop it off at the check-in desk before security. Ryanair charges €9 per kilo (2.2 lbs) for excess baggage if you purchase it online up to two hours before departure. It costs €11 per kilo (2.2 lbs) to pay for excess baggage at the airport, so make sure you weigh all your luggage in advance.

Your bag shouldn’t be larger than 80 x 120 x 120 cm (31.5 x 47.2 x 47.2 inches) . Ryanair doesn’t state a specific policy on charges for items larger than this, so we recommend confirming ahead of time to avoid last-minute problems and fees at the airport.

If you bring oversized sports equipment such as golf clubs, read more details in our guide to Ryanair’s golf club policy .

Connecting flights

Ryanair offers a very limited number of connecting flights, so any layovers will likely be self-transfers. This means you’ll need to allow enough time to go through immigration, collect any checked bags, recheck them, go back through security, and make it to your gate.

With self-transfer flights, it’s often difficult to make a claim if a delayed flight or tight connection causes you to miss your next flight. Unless you have a long layover, we highly recommend you try to only take hand luggage on a self-transfer flight.

Ryanair’s policy on lost or damaged luggage

With thousands of passengers transiting through airports every day, even the most efficient systems can go wrong. Your luggage getting damaged or not making your final destination is a risk you should always consider when checking bags. We always recommend including your luggage contents in your travel insurance policy.

If your bags are lost or damaged after a flight with Ryanair , you need to go to the lost property desk on arrival and ask for a unique reference number. This is essential to tracking your bags and making any claims. It takes up to 15 working days for Ryanair to process a claim, and there are processes to escalate any issues you have with your claim assessment. For more information, you can also check our guide on what to do if your baggage is delayed .

Do they ever allow you to check it in? I don't really fancy carrying a bag around with me.. and there always seems to be a battle for cabin space.

The only option for checkin baggage seems like the 20kg option which is also ridiculously expensive compared to the flight .

have you tried booking the basic fare then adding a 10kg check in bag as part of the process?

You are selecting the wrong thing. priority plus. Bags is for passengers who want to take a 10 kg bag onboard in addition to the included under seat bag.

If you don’t select priority +2, you will get an option to add a 10kg checked bag

Flying with a Bike on RyanAir (Updated 11/2022)

By Elias Howe November 02, 2022

Flying with a Bike on RyanAir | Orucase

The Bottom Line on Taking a Bike on RyanAir:

Our team of highly-trained bicycle travel scientists gives RyanAir a Bicycle Flight Grade (BFG) of B+ . As a European budget carrier, RyanAir's policies and fees are quite different from most US carriers, so they warrant a bit of explanation. First of all, a carry-on bag is only included if you pay for "Priority & 2 Cabin Bags", which costs €6/£6 at booking. Non-priority customers are allowed a single small bag, what we know in the States as a "Personal Item", which must fit under the seat in front of you. However, if you show up with two bags and have not paid for priority, they will check it free of charge as long as it meets the size and weight requirements of hand luggage.

Checked bags are not included, but are priced comparably to US carriers if they are paid for at booking. Try to decide at booking, or else the fee jumps. The bike fee at booking is €60/£60, which is quite reasonable compared to most major US carriers. Interestingly, there seem to be no oversize fees for checked baggage - only a strict limit of 81 x 119 x 119cm, or 125 linear inches. There are, however, separate fees for items considered "large sports equipment", and there is even a fee for checking golf clubs. It is unclear what counts as "large sports equipment", or whether this information must be volunteered by the passenger.

In conclusion - despite the rather convoluted baggage policies and a schedule of fees that lacks clear definitions, the bike fee for RyanAir is pretty reasonable when compared to major US carriers, and even most US budget carriers. The flights are also pretty cheap, which no doubt is part of the reason RyanAir is one of Europe's most popular airlines. We recommend it.

RyanAir Baggage and Bicycle Policies at a Glance:

Please note that this information is subject to change and may not reflect the most recent information available on RyanAir's website. (Updated 9/13/18)

A few general notes on flying with a bicycle:

A few things to keep in mind when flying with a bike on RyanAir actually apply to all airlines. It’s important to come to the airport prepared with a knowledge of airline policies and procedures. We have found that airline employees are often woefully misinformed about their own company's policies, so it can be helpful to bring a printed reference of any relevant policies, especially those regarding baggage allowances and fees.  It’s also prudent to take baggage policies into account when planning a trip and buying tickets. Why take the budget airline if they are sticklers at the baggage counter and will likely charge you double or triple to fly with your bike?

Lastly, a true Airport Ninja knows that airline employees don’t always play by the book, and this can both help us and hurt us as customers. Many gate agents will never look twice as your bags, while others are vigilantes who play fast and loose with the tape measure. Checking in early, approaching a well-rested-looking ticketing agent and being very polite, or using curbside check-in and offering a small tip are all strategies that can all help turn the odds in your favor.  For more advice on how to be an Airport Ninja, see our blog Ninja Tutelage Lesson 1 - What's in the Bag?

Your best chance to avoid paying fees is to pack your bike in the smallest possible bike case, especially one with no obvious markings that indicate that it is a bike. This is where the Orucase Airport Ninja comes to the rescue. Designed and tested by professional cyclists to minimize or even eliminate excess baggage fees. Become an Airport Ninja Today.

Ryanair Pet Policy – Travelling With Pet In Cabin & Cargo

AirlinesUpdates » Blog » Ryanair Pet Policy – Travelling With Pet In Cabin & Cargo

The Ryanair Pet Policy outlines the rules and guidelines for traveling with pets on Ryanair flights. As a pet-friendly airline, Ryanair welcomes your beloved furry friends onboard, making it easier for you to share memorable moments wherever you go. Understanding the details of the Pet Policy is essential to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for both you and your pets.

Whether you have a small cat or a larger dog, the policy covers the requirements, fees, and procedures to follow when traveling with your pets in the cabin or as checked baggage. The Pet Policy allows you to plan your trip with peace of mind and the assurance that your pets are well taken care of throughout the travel experience. So, let’s learn more about the pet policy.

In this post

Ryanair Pet Policy Overview

The Ryanair Pet Policy welcomes cats and dogs as travel companions, allowing passengers to bring their beloved pets on their journeys. Certain guidelines and requirements must be followed to ensure the safety and comfort of both pets and passengers.

Only small cats and dogs are allowed on Ryanair flights, and they must be transported in an appropriate pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of the passenger. The combined weight of the pet and the carrier should not exceed 10 kg. It’s important to note that larger pets are prohibited in the cabin and must be transported as cargo through Ryanair’s specialized pet transport service.

Before booking, passengers must notify Ryanair of their intention to travel with a pet, as there are limitations on the number of pets allowed on each flight. Making the necessary arrangements to secure a spot for your furry friend is advisable.

A fee is applicable for each pet traveling in the cabin, which is non-refundable. It is essential to review the current pet fee, as it may vary depending on the travel date and destination.

In compliance with regulations, pets must remain inside their carriers throughout the flight and cannot roam freely in the cabin. Passengers are responsible for ensuring their pets remain calm and quiet during the journey.

For international travel, passengers must also comply with the pet import and export regulations of the countries they are flying to and from. Some destinations may require additional documentation or quarantine procedures, so checking the specific requirements before traveling is crucial.

Adhering to these guidelines and adequately preparing, passengers can have a delightful travel experience with their furry companions onboard Ryanair flights. Also, they can avail benefits such as Ryanair upgrade, etc.

Rules & Regulations of Ryanair Pet Travel Policy

Under the Ryanair Pet Policy, traveling with pets is allowed, but certain rules and regulations must be followed to ensure the safety and comfort of both pets and passengers. Here are the key guidelines:

  • Pet Types Allowed: Only cats and dogs can travel with Ryanair.
  • Pet Size and Weight Limit: Pets must be small enough to fit comfortably in an appropriate pet carrier that can be stowed under the seat in front of the passenger. The combined weight of the pet and carrier should not exceed 10 kg.
  • Pet Carrier Requirements: The pet carrier must meet specific criteria. It should be secure, well-ventilated, leak-proof, and spacious enough for the pet to stand, turn around, and lie comfortably. The carrier must have a waterproof bottom and a secure locking mechanism.
  • Pet Reservation: Passengers must inform Ryanair about their intention to travel with a pet. There is a limit on the number of pets allowed on each flight, so early notification is crucial to secure a spot for the pet.
  • Pet Fees: A non-refundable fee applies to each pet traveling in the cabin. The pet fee may vary depending on the travel date and destination.
  • In-Cabin Travel: Pets must remain inside their carriers throughout the flight and cannot roam freely in the cabin. The carrier must be kept under the seat in front of the passenger.
  • Pet Behavior: Passengers ensure their pets remain calm and quiet during the journey. Disruptive or aggressive behavior by the pet may lead to restrictions or denial of future travel.
  • International Travel: For international flights, passengers must comply with the import and export regulations of the countries they travel to and from. Some destinations may require additional documentation or quarantine procedures for pets.
  • Health and Documentation: Pets must be healthy and have all necessary vaccinations and health certificates for air travel. Passengers must carry relevant documents during the journey.
  • Cargo Transport: Larger pets not meeting the cabin size and weight requirements must be transported as cargo through Ryanair’s pet transport service.

Moreover, checking the current pet policy requirements and cancellation policy before making travel arrangements is essential, as the policy details may change over time.

What are the Pets Allowed on Ryanair Flight?

On Ryanair flights, only cats and dogs can travel as pets in the cabin. The airlines only have two types of animals permitted for in-cabin travel. Unfortunately, other types of pets, such as birds, rabbits, reptiles, or rodents, are not accepted in the cabin and must be transported through other means or airlines.

  • Cats: Ryanair welcomes cats as part of its pet policy. If you wish to travel with your feline companion, you can bring them on board in an appropriate pet carrier that meets the airline’s guidelines. It’s essential to ensure the carrier is well-ventilated, secure, and comfortable for your cat during the flight.
  • Dogs: Ryanair also allows dogs to travel with passengers in the cabin. Like cats, dogs must travel in a suitable pet carrier that complies with the airline’s requirements. Choosing a carrier that allows your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably throughout the journey is important.

The combined weight of the pet and the carrier should not exceed 10 kg for cats and dogs. If your pet and carrier exceed this weight limit, they will not be allowed in the cabin and must be transported using Ryanair’s specialized pet transport service as cargo.

As the policies and regulations may change over time, it’s essential to check Ryanair’s official website or contact their customer support for the most up-to-date information on the types of pets allowed and their specific requirements.

Additionally, if you plan to travel internationally, review your destination country’s pet import and export regulations, as they may have their own set of rules for traveling with pets.

What Documents to Carry While Traveling With Pets on Ryanair Airlines?

When traveling with pets on Ryanair Airlines, passengers are required to carry certain documents to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey for their furry companions. Here are the essential documents to carry:

  • Pet Passport or Health Certificate: For both cats and dogs traveling within the European Union (EU), a valid pet passport is necessary. The pet passport contains essential information about the pet’s identity, vaccinations, and health status. If you’re traveling from outside the EU or to a non-EU destination, a health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian may be required, stating that the pet is in good health and fit for air travel.
  • Vaccination Records: Make sure to bring the up-to-date vaccination records of your pet, especially for rabies vaccination. Vaccination requirements may vary depending on your destination, so it’s crucial to check the specific regulations of the country you’re traveling to.
  • Microchipping Certificate: Ensure that your pet has a microchip, and carry the microchipping certificate as proof of identification.
  • Import and Export Permits: If you’re traveling to a country with strict pet import regulations, you may need to obtain an import permit in advance. Similarly, some countries may require an export permit if you’re taking your pet out of the country.
  • Other Required Documents: Depending on your destination, additional documents may be necessary, such as proof of ownership, customs declarations, or quarantine certificates. Research the specific requirements of your destination country and ensure you have all the necessary paperwork before your trip.

Remember that document requirements may change over time, so it’s essential to verify the latest information on pet travel documentation from Ryanair’s official website or by contacting their customer support. Properly preparing and carrying all the required documents will help ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable journey with your pets on Ryanair flights.

Steps for Making a Booking For Pets on Ryanair Airlines

Making a booking for pets on Ryanair Airlines involves several steps to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey for your furry companion. Here’s a general guide on how to book for pets:

  • Check Pet Policy: Before starting the booking process, review Ryanair’s pet policy on their official website( www.ryanair.com ) to understand the specific requirements and guidelines for traveling with pets.
  • Contact Ryanair: Once you have familiarized yourself with the pet policy, contact Ryanair’s customer support to inquire about the availability of pet spots on your desired flight. Due to limited space for pets in the cabin, it’s essential to secure a spot in advance.
  • Provide Pet Information: During the booking process, you will need to provide essential information about your pet, including its type, breed, size, and weight. This information is crucial for the airline to ensure compliance with the pet policy.
  • Book Early: Pet spots on flights are limited, so it’s advisable to book your pet’s travel as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Ryanair follows a first-come, first-served basis for pet bookings.
  • Pay Pet Fee: Ryanair charges a non-refundable fee for each pet traveling in the cabin. The pet fee may vary depending on the travel date and destination. Make sure to pay the applicable pet fee during the booking process.
  • Prepare Pet Carrier: Ensure you have an appropriate pet carrier that meets Ryanair’s requirements. The carrier should be well-ventilated, secure, and spacious enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.
  • Review Documentation Requirements: Check the necessary pet travel documentation required for your destination, such as a pet passport or health certificate. Make sure you have all the required documents ready before the travel date.

By following these steps and adhering to Ryanair’s pet policy, you can make a booking for your pet and enjoy a delightful journey together on Ryanair flights. However, please remember that pet policies and procedures may change over time, so it’s crucial to verify the latest information from the airline before making your pet’s travel arrangements.

The Ryanair Pet Policy provides a pet-friendly travel option for passengers wishing to bring their cats and dogs on board. By adhering to the guidelines and preparing in advance, pet owners can enjoy a smooth and comfortable journey with their furry companions.
