Kayaking Palm Beach

561-723-3777

Couple on kayak

Sometimes there’s nothing better than gliding along the water without a motor. Riding a kayak gives you that opportunity to really connect with the water as you’re almost on level with it. Without the motor sounds of a boat or Jet Ski, you get to enjoy the peacefulness of the waves softly rocking, the rhythm of your paddle hitting the water and the calls of the birds overhead.

In a kayak, you can smoothly glide over the calm Intracoastal, letting your cares melt away and soaking in the Florida sunshine. Or if you’re feeling up for more of an adventure, Palm Beach kayaking conveniently puts you near the Atlantic Ocean! And if you know of a different waterway you’d rather explore, feel free to bring your rental kayak there. Kayaking puts you at one with nature while giving you a fantastic workout of your arms and core as you paddle against the resistance of the water. You get to choose your own adventure, whether you want a single kayak all to yourself or you’d rather bring a buddy in a double kayak. You can also pick from sitting on top kayaks or sea kayaks depending on your plans. Then decide the experience you want to have. Want to head out for a quick two-hour tour? No problem. Or if you’d rather spend the full day with your kayak or even take it overnight, we have rental options to accommodate those wishes. Kayaking in Palm Beach gives you a prime way to immerse yourself in the nature of the area!

What a beautiful day !! Richard made us feel comfortable from the beginning. Even though we were first time kayakers. We saw a number of birds, three alligators, the nostrils of a river otter and a manatee tail ! I have never had such a relaxing workout. The experience was made all the better by the information Richard provided. Would definitely do it again when I am in town. Thank you Richard.

We had an awesome kayaking experience at Jupiter Outdoor Center! We were able to walk-in and be on the water within minutes. We saw 5 alligators, several turtles and birds, and evening a flying fish and a raccoon. Sadly, we did not get to see manatees. The river & flora itself are very scenic. I hope to go back and bring people visiting Florida!

Great resource for kayaking, biking and canoeing in riverbend farm. Excellent and personable customer services. They got us super excited for our day on the river. Highly recommend them.

Wonderful experience. Bianca was incredible to outline where we needed to kayak. It was so beautiful. Highly recommend to bring a waterproof bag :-) Go bike riding afterwards the park is stunning!

Paddling this part of the Loxahatchee River was so serene and relaxing. We saw turtles, ospreys, fish and small gators. The current was very easy to navigate and the dam was a blast to glide over. We had so much fun. Ira and Cameron were great guides.

Best Places to Kayak In Palm Beach County?

One of the most remarkable ways to see Palm Beach County is by kayaking through the Intracoastal Waterway, Loxahatchee River, and the Lake Worth Lagoon. By exploring further into the swamps and cypress forests of South Florida, effortlessly gliding through shallow waterways, and sneaking past unwelcoming residents, you can explore the best places to kayak in Palm Beach County and what to expect there.

The best places to kayak in Palm Beach County can take you on a voyage through gorgeous waterways, quiet beaches, coastal lakes, natural reserves, and other parks. Lake Worth Lagoon, Loxahatchee River, and Lake Okeechobee link to a vast network of locations by canals, rivers, and waterways.

The best places to kayak in Palm Beach County are listed below, and we explore which of these locations you may hire kayaks at or sign up for guided tours.

best places to kayak in Palm Beach county

Lake Worth Lagoon

Lake Worth Lagoon is a lagoon that connects Palm Beach County to the barrier beaches that divide it from the Atlantic Ocean, except for two artificial inlets that link the lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean.

The estimated 21-mile-long lagoon is home to an incredible collection of marine life and borders thirteen cities. The  marine life that inhabits  Lake Worth Lagoon includes:

  • Sea Turtles
  • And over 250 species of fish

When kayaking along Lake Worth Lagoon, you can explore  interconnected regions of nature  made up of islands, marinas, beaches, protected nature areas, and waterways, including:

  • John D. MacArthur Beach State Park  – is an environmental treasure that preserves the estuary’s majestic plant and animal life, including several rare or endangered tropical and coastal species of plants. This pristine beachfront is the only state park in Palm Beach and offers a variety of activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, and fishing.
  • Snook Islands Natural Area –  was established due to the Palm Beach County rehabilitation effort and was an uninhabitable area. However, it is now home to hundreds of species of marine life and birds. Further, it has an over 500-foot-long covered boardwalk and observation platform and an almost 600-foot-long fishing pier. Kayaking by Snook Islands allows you to observe the oysters responsible for filtering the lagoon water.
  • Ocean Ridge Natural Area –  is an artificial refuge that provides habitats and protective nurseries for various inhabitants. Ocean Ridge is famous for its serene beach experience, double-story observation platform, and water activities that you can enjoy from the floating docks, like kayaking, fishing, and boating.
  • Okeeheelee Nature Center –  is a combination of woodlands, ponds, wetlands, and flatlands home to various animals, including turtles, owls, snakes, baby alligators, tortoises, and many different bird species. Okeeheelee Nature Center offers activities, including fishing, kayaking, boating, golfing, and hiking.
  • And many more

Lake Worth Lagoon runs into the Atlantic Ocean in Palm Beach County through Palm Beach Inlet and Boyton Inlet.

Further, you can travel along the North Palm Beach Waterway from the lagoon to Lake Worth Creek, Juno Dunes Natural Area, and as far as the Loxahatchee River. Alternatively, local businesses offer a selection of  guided tours of the area and kayak rentals  and are close to many of the kayak launch spots on the lagoon. Luckily, Lake Worth Lagoon has  no reported sightings of   alligators or alligator attacks.

Loxahatchee River

Loxahatchee River is the first river in Florida to be federally designated as a Wild and Scenic River. The river’s mixture of fresh and saltwater results in diverse wildlife in this region. Therefore, a more comprehensive range of species calls these habitats home, including  endangered species  such as:

  • Sandhill Crane
  • Peregrine Falcon
  • And almost 260 unique species of birds

The Jupiter Inlet connects the Loxahatchee River with the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian River flows from the Loxahatchee River past Peck Lake to St Lucie River. The Loxahatchee River  connects to multiple places  like:

  • Jonathan Dickinson State Park   –  Features unique locations like scrub forests, coastal sand hills, and swamps. In addition, the Jonathan Dickinson State Park has the  Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center  that conserves the nature and history of the park. Further, the park offers activities such as cycling, canoeing, fishing, kayaking, and swimming.
  • Hungryland Slough Canal  – takes you from the Southwest Fork Loxahatchee River past the Karen T. Marcus Sandhill Crane Acces Park to the PGA National Resort featuring a famous hotel, luxurious spa, and championship golf course. Alternatively, you can follow the Hungryland Slough Canal to the Hungryland Slough Natural Area that lies before the massive JW Corbett Wildlife Management Area.
  • Jupiter Ridge Natural Area –  is an area   of protected land consisting of depression marsh, mangrove swamp, scrubby Flatwoods, and the longest shoreline of any natural area on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The location features various hiking trails and activities like canoeing and kayaking and is part of the  Great Florida Bird and Wildlife Trail .

The Loxahatchee River is ideal for kayaking, and multiple local businesses offer a variety of  guided tours and kayak rentals .

Additionally, there are many launch locations along the river for your convenience. However, the  Loxahatchee River is well-known for its population of alligators , and there have been reports of several alligator attacks.

Lake Okeechobee

Lake Okeechobee is well-known for being the largest freshwater lake in Florida and partially falls under Palm Beach County. Therefore, the lake provides essential irrigation for crops and water to nearby communities and environments.

In Addition, Lake Okeechobee is a natural habitat for various species of fish, birds, and other wildlife.  But beware, Lake Okeechobee is home to thousands of alligators, including some of the bulkiest alligators in Florida.

However, Lake Okeechobee forms part of the Okeechobee Waterway that cuts through a 154-mile stretch of Florida and connects the St Lucie River in the Atlantic Ocean to Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico. The Okeechobee Waterway’s kayak journey generally takes two days to complete and is considered one of the best routes to kayak in Florida.

Kayaking in Palm Beach County will take you on a journey through scenic waterways, serene beaches, coastal lakes, nature reserves, and various parks. Lake Worth Lagoon, Loxahatchee River, and Lake Okeechobee connect to a diverse network of areas through canals, rivers, and waterways.

Therefore, these famous locations are the best places to kayak in Palm Beach County, and nearby establishments provide guided tours and kayak rentals.

FUN EVENING ON THE WATER!

This was so much fun! They provide everything you need to have a great time. I went solo and have kayaked many times before. The catfish you feed are everywhere and there is a ton of other wildlife to enjoy along the way to the bridge. There is a phone number you call in to, to be able to hear the guide talk the entire time. I brought my headphones to listen. Its kayaking and you will get wet.

The experience was great! Absolutely 10/10. The guides were fun and had some great commentary and knowledge on the area and sea life. The water was calm and not being in the sun was a big plus for me. Getting to see through the kayak is so fun we got to see so much! If family comes out here again I’d definitely go again! If you’re thinking about booking this let this be the review that tells you DO IT! You won’t regret it. I made memories I’ll carry forever.

This was the best part of our trip! So much fun! Call ahead for reservations, well in advance. We had 5 nights on our trip and I called as soon as we arrived in St. Pete, and they only had an opening on our last night. I was worried since we had little to none kayak experience, but we did fine. The tour guide was excellent. We mainly saw catfish, but we found a few different types of crabs and the tour guide pulled them out for anyone who wanted to hold. Weather was perfect! We highly recommend. It is a must do!

Fun Date! The weather was perfect. The water was very calm and it was a peaceful evening on the water with no mosquitos either. You go slowly enough that you do not need to be in shape to paddle. The people helping you in the kayak are patient and kind and keep you dry. It was so fun to feed the fish and actually touch them when they came to the surface. The bottoms of the boat are not glass, but plastic. You mostly see the fish beside your boat, not underneath, but it was a worthwhile, laid back tour all ages would enjoy!

Palm Island’s big dreams could become reality with Tourism Master Plan

A Palm Island tourism Master Plan is getting closer to becoming a reality, with bold plans for new walking trails, luxurious eco-cabins and marine tourism on the tropical network of islands off Townsville.

The CEO of Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council, Michael Bissell, said the recently completed Master Plan lays out a strategic framework for how Indigenous-led tourism can create a thriving tourism industry filled with authentic First Nations experiences in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef.

“If you want a really rich and deep Indigenous engagement experience which the vast majority of international tourists say they want, but they also say that they don’t get when they come to Australia, that’s our point of difference,” said Mr Bissell.

“Walking trails are really popular, and we have exceptional offerings of coastal walks as well as mountain walks, that compliment other great walks in the region.

“You can do a beautiful 8.5kms one way walk from the jetty all the way around the west and south coast of the island and finish at Small Bay and Butler Bay, where we’ll pick you up and bring you back to your accommodation, or you can make it a 17kms round trip.

“The local ranger group, Mingga Mingga Rangers can take you on that, show you around, take you over to other south island bays such as Mundy Bay or Onion Bay, there’s some lovely BBQ areas down at Butler Bay, you can stop there for a bit of a lunch.

“The next day you can do a longer walk up to the north of greater Palm Island to Canon Bay and you can stop off at the old Catalinas at Long Beach that were dropped there by the Americans in the second world war.

“The shuttle will pick you up, bring you back to the mission, you can have a look at the Indigenous Knowledge Centre that details much of our history.

“You can do lots of arts and crafts activities, so it’s not just a walk but it’s coming over and doing a bit more of a cultural immersion as well.

“The fringing reef around Palm Island is as good as any of the outer reef across the Great Barrier Reef, so you can go to the end of the jetty and you can catch spanish mackerel and coral trout and mangrove jack, there’s lots of giant clams around.

“One of the most amazing things is that from July through to November we have the humpbacks come through.”

There are also plans for eco-cabins on nearby Havannah Island to provide a more exclusive and luxurious getaway.

“We’re going to call that a Havannah Nights experience. We’ll probably put four cabins down there, with a bit of exclusion, maybe 100 metres between, so there will just be a little jetty, they will be serviced, so very exclusive,” said Mr Bissell.

The cabins would be maintained by locals, who would also operate the tourism experiences like cultural tours, fishing and snorkel charters, guided walks and kayak hire. The Master Plan even talks about horse riding over reef flats at low tide for visitors.

Greater Palm Island is the largest discrete Indigenous community in Australia, now home to 4,000 people, with two schools, an indoor sports stadium and modern allied health centre.

Mr Bissell said the big plans can become a reality, with potential for government funding and private investment, on the proviso tourism operations are led by the local community.

“We’ve put some cost estimates that have got good contingencies built in there at $3.7 million for the five walks, and then we’ve got nearly $2 million for 8 glamping sites,” he said.

“But it’s the community that tells us look, we really want to show off our island, we want to show off our culture.

“The message to people is that the tourism plan is there, we’re not far from the investment, we’ll have it up and running soon and just come along and have a good time.”
