Scooter- formed in 1993 are a three piece band from Hamburg in Germany. They describe themselves as a 'techno hard dance' musical style.

The excitable boys from Hamburg have had a successful musical career, comprising of impressively selling over 30 million records and over 80 gold and platinum awards. Subsequently, the band are considered the most successful German single-record act with 23 top ten hits.

In 1989, the band, formerly called 'Celebrate the Nun', released their first album, titled, "Meanwhile". It was very successful and one of their singles, named, "Will You Be There" excitably reached number one in 1990 the Billboard Dance/Club play. After various member departures 'Scooter' formed in 1993 and they released their debut single, titled, "Vallée De Larmes" which translates to 'Valley of Tears'. Considering the mix of members and band name change, the release was successful and reached an exciting number eight on the German official dance chart.

Presently, Scooter is comprised of three members; lead man H.P. Baxxter, Phil Speiser and Michael Simon.

Scooter retain a unique techno and dance style, which manly features fast tempos and happy melodies, however they have also successfully experimented with various styles of musical genres including hip hop, hard rock, hard style and jump style dance sub genres. Leadman H.P. Baxxter raps frequently in Scooter's songs, whilst also using artificially pitched voices.

Live reviews

Well, what can I say about Scooter? To start with they are one of the most successful techno groups ever, with record sales eclipsing 30 million and to date have over 80 gold and platinum awards t their name. This along with having 23 Top Ten hits means they are the most successful German act.

I expected a high energy, larger than life performance when I went to see them in London in 2012, and did they disappoint? Not at all! It was an incredible concert, they got the places rocking and all in all was a cracking night! From them walking on stage and H.P Baxter announcing “Hello, it’s good to be back’ all the way till their encore of ‘Fire’ and ‘David Doesn’t Eat’ , the performance was of the highest level. They clearly love what they do and seem to enjoy the night as much as myself in the audience. With a their trademark combination of fast, energetic beats, great hooks and catchy melodies they got everyone singing along and dancing. Actually the word ‘dancing’ doesn’t do it justice! The crowd was wild, they simple just didn’t stop raving!Scooter managed to play most their big hits including ‘Hyper Hyper, Move Your Arse’ ‘The ‘Only One’ and The Leading Horse’ as well as number of others.

A superb concert for any Techno fans! If they make it back to the U.K make sure you get a ticket!

Perhaps Germany's most well known and most appreciated export to the dance circuit, Scooter have enjoyed a largely successful career and continue to take a live show compiled of their greatest hits to the baying masses. With a huge discography spanning three decades, the group has had to consolidate the music into a snappy set yet due to the pace they have chance to play a lot of the fan favourites.

The audience is responsive throughout to frontman H.P. Baxxter as he encourages them to jump higher and dance faster to the opening beats of the aptly chosen 'Hello! (Good to Be Back)'. The energy does not drop all evening as the whole outfit onstage perform with such vigour and enthusiasm, the crowd clearly feels obliged to join in. There is no provocation needed though during the familiar 'Jumping All Over The World' and 'Nessaja' which has the crowd dancing as one single unit.

Baxter continues to bring the party vibes and really does his duties as a frontman, through the lights you can see him dancing and moving continuously until the final pulsating beat of 'Ramp! (The Logical Song)'. The band leaves having given the audience a lesson in classic trance.

Scooter Braun Snarks About Taylor Swift Feud On Instagram

Paige Skinner

Associate Reporter

Photos show Taylor Swift, left, and Scooter Braun.

Music mogul Scooter Braun took to Instagram late Tuesday to snark about Taylor Swift .

Braun posted that he “finally” watched the Max documentary “Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood,” which details his long-standing feud with the singer and asks if Swift is “bravely standing up for artistry” or if Braun has been “unfairly framed” in their spat. Braun also reacted to a news article about Swift hosting a group of famous friends, including Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, at her Rhode Island home this past weekend, writing, “How was I not invited to this?!?” alongside the hashtag “#laughalittle.”

Braun and Swift’s dispute dates back to 2019, when Braun’s Ithaca Holdings acquired the label Big Machine Records, giving him the rights to Swift’s first six studio records.

Swift wrote on Tumblr at the time that she’d “pleaded” for the chance to own her music but ultimately wasn’t able to do so. She said she’d learned about Braun’s buying her music at the same time as the public.

“All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years,” Swift said of Braun, alleging that he pushed his clients to antagonize her online.

“Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy,” she said. “Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

Braun’s then-wife pushed back on Swift’s allegations, saying that Braun was “anything but a bully” and that Swift had “passed” on the opportunity to own the masters to her albums.

Since then, Swift has continued to call out Braun in her public remarks and even seemed to do so in her music.

In November 2020, news broke that Braun had sold Swift’s masters to a private equity company called Shamrock. Swift wrote on social media at the time that she’d tried to negotiate with Braun to buy her music from him, but that his team wanted her to sign an “ironclad” nondisclosure agreement to not speak negatively about him in the future.

“He would never even quote my team a price,” she wrote. “These master recordings were not for sale to me.”

She also said that Shamrock had reached out to her, leading Swift to learn that Braun would still profit off her music following the company’s purchase. Swift said that although she was “hopeful” about partnering with Shamrock, Braun’s participation was a “non-starter” for her, adding that not working with Shamrock was a “sacrifice” she had to make to keep Braun out of her life.

In response, Shamrock said that “We fully respect and support her decision and, while we hoped to formally partner, we also knew this was a possible outcome that we considered.”

In 2021, Braun spoke to Variety about his feud with Swift and reflected on his earlier acquisition of her masters.

“I regret and it makes me sad that Taylor had that reaction to the deal. … All of what happened has been very confusing and not based on anything factual,” he said, later adding, “I’m firmly against anyone ever being bullied.”

Over the years, the Coors Classic became America's national tour, listed as the fourth largest bike race in the world after the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and the Vuelta a Esapana. The Coors Classic launched the careers of some of the world's greatest cyclists and paved the way for the sport's growth in the U.S. While the Coors Classic is long gone, the Tour of the Moon provides a distant link and tie to history. Its legacy continues as one of the premier road cycling events in the western United States.

BTS' Suga issues second apology over drunken scooter incident

BTS' Suga has issued a second apology for his recent drunken electric scooter incident.

The 31-year-old K-pop star has apologised to his fans for the second time after he was fined and stripped of his driving licence in Seoul, South Korea, for driving an electric scooter while intoxicated.

"It is with feelings of shame that I apologise once again to you all. I apologise very deeply for having disappointed and hurt my fans and everyone who loves me through my wrongdoings," Suga wrote in a translated Weverse post on Sunday.

The apology comes shortly after the rapper, real name Min Yoon-gi, posted his initial apology statement on 7 August.

"Hello, this is Suga. I'm feeling extremely heavy-hearted and sorry to have to come to you all over such disappointing matter," he wrote at the time. "I rode and electric scooter home last night, after having drinks with dinner."

Suga then went on to claim that he "did not realise that you could not operate an electric scooter after drinking."

"I parked in front of the main gates to my home and I fell over by myself in that process. A police was nearby, and through the results of a breathalyser test, my licence was revoked and I paid a fine," he continued. "Although no one was hurt, neither was any property harmed in the matter, as this is inexcusably something I have to take responsibility for, I bow my head in apology to everyone."

In his second statement, Suga said that the incident had affected his relationship with his fans and his BTS bandmates.

"Due to this incident, I have greatly damaged the precious memories I made with the members and fans and put a lot of pressure on the name of the BTS," he wrote. "I feel so sorry and painful that it's hard to express because it's causing damage to the members and the team. I'm sorry that the members who always trusted me have a hard time because of me."

Suga is currently serving as a social worker in the South Korean military as part of his mandatory service.

Best Scooter for Long Distance Touring

  • Post category: Reviews & Comparisons / Scooter Reviews
  • Post last modified: May 13, 2023

When I first started shopping for and riding my scooter, I planned to just use it for my quick jaunts to and from work and to run errands. I didn’t think that you could or would want to use a scooter to go on a long trip, but I quickly learned I wanted to take my scooter EVERYWHERE! Even those long distances. I have to be super conscious of the speeds of the roads on my routes, so I started shopping for a higher speed scooter for longer ride options. This is how I landed on the best scooter for long distance touring.

The Yamaha XMAX is the best scooter for long distance scooter touring with a blend of value and features that make higher speed, longer rides safer and more comfortable.

So back to my newbie scooter self, I didn’t know you could use a scooter for long rides, so I had to start there with my research.

Are Scooters Good for Long Distances?

Scooters are generally know to be great for short distances. They’re easy to get onto, convenient, and faster a bike and more economical than a car for your day-to-day transportation needs. However, did you know that scooters can be used for long distances? It is true! That said, scooter riders who want to travel long distances will need a scooter that can go the distance.

Motor scooters are a type of motorcycle, and they are designed to operate in distances you would normally travel on the road. The only restriction would be the speed your scooter can go in relation to the speed of the intended route.

Whatever you think is a long distance, your scooter is prepared to go that distance. If you aren’t already in the know, check out this article about the differences in the type of scooters, but motor scooters are a kind of motorcycle. That said, many scooters have smaller engine sizes and therefore, operate in lower speeds.

That was news to me when I start riding, but that means they can go as far as you need them to go. Sound too good to be true?

Well, the only caveat to that is that the engine size will restrict your speed. The further you intend to go, the more likely you are to need a higher engine size. There are other features to make it more comfortable and safe, but in general, scooters are fine to take on a long ride.

Things to Consider When Buying a Scooter for Long Distance Rides

Many scooterists buy a scooter for short rides, but if you have a long ride in your future, you need to consider the following:

  • Engine size. The higher the engine size, the faster you will go.
  • Weight . The heavier the scooter and the more you carry, the harder it will be for your scooter to go the max speed it normally does.
  • Scooter frame . A good scooter frame is one that can take a beating and still stay together. That said, this is generally not a problem for scooters intended for road use and meet Department of Transporation (DoT) requirements.
  • Suspension . A good suspension system will make the ride smoother. This becomes critical when you’re talking hours of riding on a scooter.
  • Seat . A good seat will be comfortable, long-lasting, and hold up to the abuse of a ride on your body.
  • Storage capacity . The more storage you have, the more stuff you can take. You can always add on storage through saddle bags and top boxes.

As we dive further into this conversation about the larger engine sized scooters, they are also called maxi-scooters. If you want to check out more about the different types of motor scooters, check out this guide.

Features a Long Distance Scooterist Would Want

To identify the best scooter for long distance touring, I took a few factors into consideration. First, the scooter has to be able to get up to highway speeds. The longer you plan to go on your scooter, the more likely you will need to reach 60 miles per hour more regularly.

A scooter that will keep you in a relaxed riding position. Riding for hours can weigh on you as you are constantly being pushed by the wind. It gets tiring. The more relaxed the ride feel is, the better. A lower center of gravity will be key for the right position on a scooter.

Safety is important on any ride, but it definitely is important for long distance rides. There aren’t a ton of option, but you will find that features such as anti-locking brakes (ABS) are standard for scooters with engine sizes of 300ccs or higher. I also wanted to see a scooter with a larger wheel size as a blend of a safety and more comfortable ride standpoint.

So this is the framework of how I came up with the best scooter specifically for long distance touring.

This was a tough choice, but I had to choose one based on the specifications.

The best scooter for long distance touring is the Yamaha XMAX due to it’s engine size, riding position, storage capacity, tire size, suspension, and price.

The Yamaha XMAX is just a hair under 300cc at 292cc specifically. The top speed of it is around 85 miles per hour, so you can the higher speeds a long ride would likely include.

It is built for longer rides at higher speeds, so the upright riding position with an included windshield means you’ll be as comfortable as you’re able to be for a long ride. I almost forgot to mention – it also has an adjustable handlebar! Make it work & change up your position if you need to as you’re on the road for longer stretches.

The XMAX has a motorcycle-style front fork to make for a smoother ride that absorbs more of the road for you. A long day of road riding will make you appreciate this even more!

You can fit 2 full-size helmets in the underseat storage box, so wear yours & carry it in (for the coolness factor, of course) . Carrying things under the seat helps keep the weight distributed across the scooter which becomes more important when you’re loading it up for a longer trip.

I wish the XMAX boasted 16″ tires, but it has a 15″ front and 14″ rear. Still a far cry from some of the 10″ tire size scooter options. As a rule of thumb, larger tires make for a smoother ride. I can tell a huge difference even going from 10″ to 12″, so 15″ is a solid long ride tire size.

The XMAX has a charging port for keeping your gear (GPS, radar detector, or your phone) charged. You’ll appreciate this if your touring ride has you doing rides in unknown territory or overnight camping involved in particular.

The XMAX’s safety features include the ABS disc brakes and LED lights. These are fairly standard on scooters with around 300ccs. However, I loved that the XMAX has traction control, as well. Just another safety layer to keep you scooting safely during long rides.

Add a top box or rollbag & a toolkit, and you are ready to roll! Check out these luggage and toolset options on Revzilla specifically for the Yamaha XMAX.

Accessories for Long Distance Touring on a Scooter

The best accessory I recommend for touring on your scooter is a windshield no matter what speed you plan to tour. You might not realize it, but riding a scooter is a constant battle with the wind as you ride. A windshield will obviously limit any debris reaching you, but it also aids in the force that hits your body over time while riding.

The XMAX comes with a windshield, so you can skip that part if are planning to buy a maxi-scooter with one.

Additionally, I highly recommend you gear up no matter what scooter you have to endure a long ride. Being comfortable while being safe will go a long way to making a long ride more enjoyable. If your ride will be warm, check out this guide on warm weather gear and tips. Check out this guide for your cool riding needs.

Your gear protects you in the event of a crash AND keeps you comfortable no matter the elements you’ll encounter on a long ride.

Lastly, accessories on the scooter that give you extra storage is critical. You can get saddle bags for scooters, but you’ll get the most storage bang for you buck with what you can fit on the rear rack in the form of a large rollbag or other storage. Check out Revzilla where you can put your specific model in to find out the luggage options for your scooter.

Competing Brands and Models

I built a spreadsheet of scooters. If you haven’t seen it, check it out at the bottom of my Scooter Buying Guide . Most of the columns are simply specifications or features of the scooter which doesn’t capture the spirit of a good touring scooter necessarily. However, for the ultimate touring scooter, it needs to be able to handle the higher speeds. That means you’d start by filtering or sorting the choices by the larger motor sizes and then your budget.

If you go through the list, you may notice the Suzuki Burgman . I would have declared it the winner, but when I look at the features of the Burgman vs the XMAX, the XMAX had so many of the same features for a FEW THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS LESS . Those few thousand dollars would buy a lot of accessories for your scooter to make it even more money worth out on the road. The XMAX was the better choice for long distance touring for value, but don’t discount the Burgman if you are willing to spend the money. You do get some more cc’s for it!

The other scooter that caught my eye was the Sym CityCom 300i . I would have chosen that one hands down except that I haven’t had an opportunity to ride it, AND it doesn’t have ABS brakes. It seems like a standard for scooters in this engine size range, so it really was a sticking point for me. Be seen & be safe, scooter enthusiast!

Touring scooters include the suzuki burgman 650 executive, yamaha t-max 500, piaggio bv500, honda silver wing, and vespa gts 300. not all scooters are diminutive, lightweight, small-wheeled city runabouts. for those that crave highway speeds but dont want to worry about messing around with a clutch, touring scooters or maxi scooters offer an interesting alternative. touring scooters are larger than their lower-displacement cousins and can feature engines ranging anywhere from 250cc to 650cc, but they still feature the step-through design common to all scooters. some of these larger touring scooters are nearly as capable as a full-blown motorcycle, but can be less intimidating for newer riders. touring scooters also offer the bonus of ample storage space and impressive fuel economy., 2023 piaggio mp3 three-wheeled scooters – first look.

The saying is massively overused, but there really is no replacement for displacement. Such is the case with the updated 2022 Piaggio BV 400 S – BV being the abbreviation for Beverly. For a few years now, Europeans and Americans alike have been doing just fine with Piaggio’s BV 350, but stricter Euro 5 regulations have forced manufacturers to comply with the rules if they want to keep doing what they do; sell product.

MO Tested: Shoei GT-Air II + Sena SRL2 Review

Has it really been six years since the Shoei GT-Air helmet was released? Well, it has, and that means the lid was due for an update – even though, when Troy tested it back in 2017, he said, “[T]he Shoei GT-Air really impresses when it comes to all-day touring comfort. It’s got all the features you’d want from a helmet, with the fit to match.” Using the previous generation as the starting point, Shoei’s designers set out to improve on the already top-notch lid. The result is the brand new Shoei GT-Air II, which ups the ante when it comes to premium touring/sport-touring helmet comfort and utility. To make the helmet even more enticing, Shoei partnered with Sena, as with the Shoei Neotec II, to create a fully-integrated Bluetooth communication system, the Sena SRL2.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive, lightweight vehicle for riding around town or completing short errands, scooters are an excellent choice. If you want something with a bit more performance and versatility, you might want to consider a maxi-scooter instead. Maxi-scooters, or touring scooters, offer larger engines and typically better wind protection, making a good choice as an everyday commuter or for longer distance rides.

MO Tested: No-Mar Classic HD Motorcycle Tire Changer Review

MO Tested: No-Mar Classic HD Motorcycle Tire Changer Review

As motorcycles become more reliable and maintenance intervals get more spread out, one consumable remains on a fairly frequent interval for motorcycles. Tires have made tremendous advances in the last decade, but they are still the most frequent maintenance items for motorcyclists. With the rates for mounting and balancing tires going through the roof (My local shop charges $60 for a pair of tires with the wheels off the bike.), buying a tire changer makes a lot of sense. I’d been eyeing No-Mar Tire Changers for quite a while before pulling the trigger and installing one in my garage. In less than a month and after changing a dozen tires, we’d have already spent about 35% of the cost of the No-Mar Classic HD Motorcycle Tire Changer at our local motorcycle shop, but what’s most important is how convenient it is having a tire changer in my garage available when I need it. I no longer have to load my wheels into my truck, drive to my local shop, wait an hour (or more) for them to be ready, and finally take them home to reinstall on my bike.

The Yamaha TMax is getitng a displacement bump up to 560cc, and a new Tech Max variant. Unfortunately, the new TMax does not appear to be coming to the U.S., which isn’t entirely as surprise as it has only made sporadic appearances here since it first debuted in 2001. In Europe, however, the TMax has been immensely popular, with Yamaha selling more than 275,000 units in total.

Gazebox Foldable Cover System

Gazebox Foldable Cover System

It’s on rainy, cold nights like this one that I’m glad I have a garage. Looking at your motorcycle parked outside as it’s pelted with rain, sleet, hail, mud and other unpleasantness can make you weep with impotent rage. Cover it? Motorcycle covers are a hassle to put on and remove. First, you have to wait until the bike cools to avoid melting the cover to the exhaust. Plus, they can blow off your bike, get shredded and messy-looking, and trap moisture underneath, which can cause rust and mold. Nasty!

Love this product so much! It has transformed my commute into an enjoyable part of my day. Will be buying a backup once they’re back in stock

Excellent product… more stable than my previous one and rides nicely over potholes in New York. Well done

This thing is getting serious attention in London. When I'm stopped at the lights people are always asking me what I'm riding. Can't wait for Summer! What a stunner!

Very impressed overall. Some teething issues but you’re getting there.

Totally aside from the product, your commitment to customer service (despite the transatlantic issues) has been superb. Couldn’t be happier to have started my electric scooter journey with you guys. You’ve always been there for me, no matter the issues. 👏

Delivery was late and box heavily scuffed. I like the scooter

I took it out for a spin today. It is AWESOME! First impression: It's extremely well built. Robust AF. It's a tank with afterburners. I saw other electric scooters on the road with me and couldn't imagine myself feeling as safe as I did on the Taur.

Love that I just pulled it out and didn't have to assemble anything. Great job Taur! Even at 6'5", it scoots me down the road no problem and even handles some pretty big hills.

What is included in the 2-year warranty?

If anything goes wrong that isn’t your fault, we’ll fix it, and pay any associated shipping costs. The warranty does not cover any of what we call 'consumables', e.g. tyres, inner tubes, grip tape, handlebar grips, brake cables, paint, etc. Full details here .

How long does delivery take?

In the US, our standard delivery is FedEx 3-5 working days, shipping out of Los Angeles, California. West coast customers typically wait 1 or 2 days, while delivery to the East coast typically takes the full 4 or 5 days. In the UK, we offer overnight delivery with FedEx. Once we dispatch your order, we will send you tracking details.

Where do you ship to?

TAUR currently ships anywhere in mainland USA, and will soon ship to mainland UK as well (excl. NI, islands). The reason for not shipping to remote states/islands is to ensure we can offer reliable and high quality aftersales service to our customers. We hope to expand availability in due course.

What is TAUR's maximum rider weight / height?

TAUR is designed for riders between 5' 2" (157cm) and 6' 5" (195cm). People smaller/bigger than that certainly can ride, but you may find the experience sub-optimal. The scooter can carry almost all riders. However, for our warranty to be valid, and for standard performance (acceleration, speed, range and hill climbing), TAUR’s maximum rider weight is 100kg (220lbs). That's just under 16 stone.

Why no suspension? Why not solid tyres?

If you consider road bikes, pretty much all of them have large air-filled tires, which makes the need for suspension redundant. TAUR uses that same philosophy. Not only is suspension heavy, but it's only really useful if, like most scooters, the wheels are tiny. TAUR partnered with the best tire brand in the world. We use 12.5" Continental® tires – the biggest tires you can get on a portable electric scooter. They are designed to ride at low pressure for optimum cushioning and grip. Yes, it’s true solid tires can't get punctures, but riding on them is uncomfortable. TAUR’s Continental® tires have an internal Kevlar belt that gives us phenomenal puncture resistance. And if worst comes to worst, 12.5 inch replacement inner tubes/tires are available in many bike stores and online.

What can you do with the TAUR app?

Set speed limits, lock/unlock the scooter, record your trips, share access with friends and family, and upgrade your scooter software. More features arriving as soon as we build them!

Is the battery removable?

No, the battery is not designed to be rapidly removable by customers. Some e-bikes have this feature because bikes are big and are often left outdoors. In the case of technical issues or degradation, an approved Taur technician can replace them. To dive into the detail a little more, our Battery Management System (BMS) is constantly monitoring the battery to make sure it stays happy and healthy in all environments and states of performance. That alone will extend the life of your battery considerably. Going further, our BMS will also allow us to notify you if there are any issues, including when your battery capacity has permanently degraded.

The Scooter on a Plane Dilemma: Can You Fly with Your Electric Ride?

  • According to the FAA, electric scooters with lithium-ion batteries are not allowed on commercial flights.
  • Over 4,000 hoverboards and electric scooters were confiscated at airports in 2019.
  • There are alternative options for traveling with your scooter, like shipping it ahead of time.
  • Always check airline and TSA guidelines before attempting to travel with your scooter.

Why Can't You Bring Your Electric Scooter on a Plane?

Electric scooters have become the go-to personal transportation choice for many urban dwellers, but when it comes to taking them on a plane, there's a catch. The FAA has strict regulations that classify electric scooters with lithium-ion batteries as hazardous materials, making them prohibited on commercial flights.

FAA's Stance on Electric Scooters and Lithium-ion Batteries

The main concern with electric scooters on planes is their lithium-ion batteries. FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor explained, "Electric scooters with lithium-ion batteries are considered hazardous materials and are not allowed on commercial flights." The risk of fire posed by these batteries in a pressurized aircraft cabin is simply too great.

TSA Confiscation of Electric Scooters

In 2019, the TSA reported confiscating over 4,000 hoverboards and electric scooters at airport security checkpoints due to their lithium-ion batteries. Clearly, attempting to bring your scooter on a plane could lead to a frustrating and costly experience.

Alternative Options for Traveling with Your Electric Scooter

Although you can't take your electric scooter on a plane, don't fret! There are other ways to bring your scooter along for your journey.

  • Shipping your scooter: Consider shipping your scooter to your destination ahead of time. This will allow you to avoid the hassle of dealing with airport security and airline restrictions.
  • Renting a scooter at your destination: Many popular tourist destinations offer electric scooter rentals, so you might not even need to bring your own.

Always Check Airline and TSA Guidelines

Before attempting to travel with your electric scooter, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the guidelines and restrictions set by the airline and TSA. Make sure to double-check their websites for the most up-to-date information on what is and isn't allowed on your flight.

Electric Scooter Travel Tips

For those determined to travel with their electric scooter, here are some helpful tips to ensure a smooth experience:

  • Research scooter-friendly destinations: When planning your trip, look for cities with a strong scooter culture, dedicated lanes, and rental options to make the most of your experience.
  • Carry a portable charger: Bring a portable charger that's compatible with your scooter so you can keep it charged and ready for adventure.
  • Invest in a travel-friendly scooter: Some electric scooters have removable batteries, making them more convenient for shipping. Consider purchasing one of these models if you plan to travel frequently with your scooter.
  • Know local laws and regulations: Familiarize yourself with the local laws and regulations for electric scooters at your destination to avoid any unpleasant surprises or fines.

Getting the Most Out of Your Electric Scooter Abroad

Now that you know the ins and outs of traveling with your electric scooter, it's time to ensure you have the best experience possible while abroad. Here are some additional tips for enjoying your scooter to the fullest during your trip:

  • Choose scooter-friendly accommodations: Look for hotels or vacation rentals that offer secure scooter parking or charging stations to make your stay more convenient.
  • Connect with local scooter communities: Search online for local scooter groups or forums in your destination city. They can offer valuable advice and tips on the best routes, sights, and scooter-friendly spots.
  • Stay safe and be visible: Equip your scooter with proper lights and reflectors, and always wear a helmet to ensure your safety while riding.
  • Be prepared for emergencies: Pack a small toolkit and spare parts, like inner tubes and brake pads, to address any potential issues that may arise during your trip.

Exploring Electric Scooter Tours

Another way to enjoy electric scooters while traveling is by joining organized scooter tours. These tours are led by experienced guides who know the best routes and local attractions. They can provide a fun and unique way to explore a new city while enjoying the freedom and excitement of riding an electric scooter.

Maximizing Your Electric Scooter's Battery Life

When traveling with your electric scooter, it's essential to get the most out of your battery life. Here are some tips for extending your scooter's battery life:

  • Keep the battery fully charged: Charge your battery overnight or during downtime to ensure you always have enough power for your daily adventures.
  • Avoid excessive weight: Overloading your scooter with heavy bags or additional passengers can strain the battery and reduce its overall lifespan.
  • Maintain proper tire pressure: Underinflated tires can increase resistance, making your scooter work harder and consume more battery power. Check tire pressure regularly and adjust as needed.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Extreme heat or cold can negatively impact battery performance. Store your scooter indoors or in a shaded area when not in use to protect the battery from extreme temperatures.

Understanding Electric Scooter Etiquette

When traveling with an electric scooter, it's important to respect local customs and adhere to proper scooter etiquette. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

  • Obey traffic rules: Follow all traffic laws and regulations, including stop signs, traffic lights, and speed limits.
  • Yield to pedestrians: Always give pedestrians the right of way, especially on shared paths or sidewalks.
  • Park responsibly: When parking your scooter, ensure it doesn't block pedestrian paths, ramps, or doorways. Use designated scooter parking areas whenever available.
  • Be courteous: Share the road with other riders and vehicles, and always be respectful of other people's space.

By following these guidelines and making the most of your electric scooter experience, you can create unforgettable memories while exploring new destinations.

Traveling on an Airplane with a Mobility Scooter for Handicap Users

Air travel with a mobility scooter can be a smooth and hassle-free experience for individuals with disabilities if you know the right steps to follow. Here's a guide to help you prepare for your flight and navigate the process of traveling with a mobility scooter:

Pre-Flight Preparations

  • Research airline policies: Each airline has its own set of rules and regulations for traveling with mobility scooters. Review your chosen airline's guidelines on their website or contact their customer service for specific details.
  • Book your flight in advance: Inform the airline of your mobility scooter when making your reservation, and request any necessary assistance. This ensures the airline has ample time to accommodate your needs.
  • Check battery requirements: Most airlines require mobility scooters to have non-spillable, dry-cell, or gel cell batteries. Lithium-ion batteries may be allowed if they meet specific requirements, but always verify with your airline before traveling.
  • Prepare your scooter for travel: Charge your scooter's battery, remove any loose items, and secure movable parts. You may also need to disconnect the battery, so have the necessary tools handy.

At the Airport

  • Arrive early: Arrive at the airport well in advance to allow ample time for check-in, security screening, and any potential mobility scooter-related delays.
  • Request assistance: If needed, request wheelchair assistance from the airline to help navigate the airport and reach your gate. They can also help with boarding and deplaning.
  • Gate-check your scooter: Mobility scooters are typically gate-checked, meaning you can use your scooter up until boarding time. At that point, airline personnel will take your scooter and stow it in the cargo hold. Make sure to retrieve a claim check for your scooter.

During the Flight

  • Keep your scooter's key and claim check: Hold onto your scooter's key and the claim check throughout the flight, as you'll need them to retrieve your scooter upon arrival.
  • Request assistance during layovers: If you have a layover, make arrangements with the airline for wheelchair assistance between gates and during boarding.

Arriving at Your Destination

  • Retrieve your scooter: Once you've arrived at your destination, wait for airline personnel to bring your scooter to the gate. If there are any issues or delays, contact the airline immediately.
  • Inspect your scooter: Before leaving the airport, inspect your scooter for any potential damage caused during transport. If you discover any issues, file a claim with the airline as soon as possible.

By following these steps and being proactive in your preparations, traveling on an airplane with a mobility scooter can be a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

Scooter Touring the best way to travel

tour by scooter

“Whether it’s riding over the Yorkshire Moors… crossing the Peak District…, or leading friends along the A370 through rural Somerset en route to Weston-super-Mare… all it took was a little more time and a vague plan.”

If you’re reading Scootering then it’s a safe bet that you have a scooter. We are therefore all members of ‘that club’ which understands that a motor-scooter is not only a great tool for beating traffic, but compared to being in a tin box of a car, is also the best way to truly see the world.

The planning

tour by scooter

Whatever the capacity of your engine, scooter touring is a more pleasurable alternative than going directly from A to B. It’s something I try to allow for these days wherever possible, an opportunity to get off the motorways, explore the less travelled roads and discover places and things I’ve not seen before.

This is equally applicable to a British scooter rally as it is to an overseas adventure with plenty to see throughout our green and pleasant land without even thinking of getting a ferry anywhere.

Whether it’s riding over the Yorkshire Moors on the way to Scarborough, crossing the Peak District when taking the scenic route to Morecambe, or leading friends along the A370 through rural Somerset en route to Weston-super-Mare, they’ve all turned what could be potentially mundane journeys into far more memorable trips, and all it took was a little more time and a vague plan.

tour by scooter

None of it was far off the beaten track, we just shave a few corners here and there and hey presto, a scenic road!

The mission

As I said last month, the target was the Rimini Lambretta Centre open day, and with planes, trains and automobiles generally hateful forms of transport, a good scooter seemed the logical choice, and after years of experience the Suzuki Burgman 650 sprung to mind immediately as the one for the job.

tour by scooter

The underseat storage space is complemented by an accessory Givi topbox which together took enough clothes, cameras, iPad and chargers for two people to spend 10 days or so on the road.

But which road? As much as I wanted to get there fast, the reason for taking a scooter was to enjoy the ride, and not just because I was flying past cars at great speed on the autobahns. As such, the plan was left open so we could literally follow the road and end up where it took us. As long as we were at the shop on time.

Getting there

tour by scooter

Many years ago a band manager/driver told me the only way they’d consider crossing into Europe was on a ferry from Dover to Calais. As he explained, if you miss one, there’s usually another within an hour, and if a boat breaks down the rest simply sail around it.

I was reminded of this while waiting for an unacceptable amount of time at the Eurotunnel on our way to Italy. A lack of information for both customers and staff on the ground saw us hanging around at the terminal until gone midday because just one tunnel was being used due to a breakdown (or power cut, I’m still not sure).

When it was then suggested that the delay could continue until early evening I got onto my mobile and within 10 minutes had booked a ferry crossing and we were heading down the road to Dover to catch it. Sorted. And the last minute booking was no more money than the Chunnel either.

Also worth remembering is that if you break down in Europe, the Chunnel won’t let you push or tow your scooter on to its trains, while the ferry companies will allow you to do so, and at Calais and Dover they will often let a recovery truck take you to the dockside rather than push to and from the main gate.

After a fast blast from Dunkirk port to make up some of the lost day, we stopped at a local hotel near Spa in Belgium. This gave us the opportunity the next day to check the map for a cross country route that took us through the pretty town and areas of the Ardennes region that I’ve travelled past so many times, but never through. Beautiful scenery, picturesque villages, good roads with plenty of twists and turns; very recommended.

After crossing the Swiss border and buying an annual Vignate for motorway travel (top tip: buying in Swiss francs worked out much cheaper than euros), we blasted past the cities until we reached the lakes and again got off the beaten track for some sightseeing and generally far more pleasant roads.

Our stopping point that night was a biker-friendly local hotel in Wassen where we woke up in the morning to the sight of snow capped mountains from the window. We were also a short ride from the Andermatt Pass and while it wasn’t fully open yet, there was plenty to see and explore before the snow allowed you to go no further.

As it was early in the year our way through was via St Gotthards Tunnel, which is free, and we continued checking out the lakes the other side as we dropped into Italy around Como.

Once at our location there were plenty of local roads to explore in the region around San Marino, the principality itself well worth a visit (and best done on two wheels rather than four) if you find yourself in the area.

Emilia Romagna is generally a very beautiful region of Italy with enough quiet hills and valleys to check out only minutes from what at first appears to be a bustling town. They could just do with a road resurfacing programme because in places the Burgman was pretty much off-roading. And I thought the Old Kent Road was bad…

Coming back we gambled on Bologna and were pleasantly surprised to find a bike friendly hotel close to the city centre at a very good rate. Our next stop was Milan for the pilgrimage to all things Innocenti, before heading back through Switzerland with Colmar on our mind.

Having stayed they in the past we knew it was pretty enough with plenty of places to stay and eat, and we even bargained a good deal from a quality chain hotel for a decent sized room, breakfast and underground parking – a treat for our last night in Europe!

The final leg home was via the Alsace Wine Route ( www.alsace-wine-route.com ) which involves some simply stunning roads through a beautiful region of France.

So remind me, why don’t I want to join the cattle at Stansted again?

Alpine passes

Although I’ve ridden across the Alps now at most times of the year, I don’t do it anywhere near enough to remember when the various passes are open and closed.

I do recall crossing in June for a EuroVespa Rally in the early 2000s and after four of us has coaxed our PXs and a T5 to the peak we were surprised to learn that the particular pass we were on had only been open for a fortnight. This was T-shirt weather in the summer, yet the snow was still piled over 12ft tall at the side of the roads!

As such, I now check both passes and tunnels before leaving home, and between them these websites offer some useful advice:

Burger King

I often get asked by riders of all types of powered-two-wheeler what I reckon is the best scooter out there. “How long is a piece of string?” is my usual reply. When asked what I recommend for touring however, well I’ve still yet to find something better than a Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive – and I recommend it to bikers too.

It does everything I need it to and more, as long as you’re not greedy. By that I mean if you want to pack the kitchen sink and then go scratching around corners like Barry Sheene, look elsewhere. But if you’re away for a couple of weeks, you’re going to be carrying a fair bit of kit, a pillion too, then the Suzuki is King.

It will piss all over a Vespa GTS too, both on performance and comfort so if you want to enjoy the ride, munch the miles, yet still be able to filter through traffic and appreciate twisty mountain passes, then the Big Burger takes a lot of beating in my book.

Once at our destination the Burgman wasn’t allowed to rest with plenty of hills to tackle, a Sunday rideout to photograph and possibly a race around the twisties to the lunchtime restaurant stop. Ahem… I have to say here mind you, that the ‘power mode’ really got a good workout here and proved it’s worth as it pulled out leads from tight hairpins, the three disc brakes bringing the 277kg of scooter to a halt more than adequately a few yards later, the ABS at the back of your mind for reassurance.

Mischievousness aside, the Suzuki Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (SECVT) really is a good piece of kit. If your only experience of an auto scooter is the common CVT rubber band as seen on almost all of them today (Gilera Runner, Italjet Dragster, Vespa GTS etc) then this really is different.

In ‘drive’ or ‘power’ auto modes it monitors the throttle action, responding to the rider grabbing a fistful and snatching it open by effectively changing down a gear to enable you to accelerate a lot faster than a normal CVT would allow. In ‘power’ mode it holds on the equivalent of lower gears for a little longer, allowing the engine to rev high and resulting in faster acceleration.

Use this to pass another car and it will take you from 80mph upwards at an eye watering rate of knots (on a German autobahn of course) to a comfortable three figure top speed, even fully loaded and with a passenger. And if that’s not enough, you can select six speeds manually, changing gear using push buttons on the handlebars.

Add electrically operated screen and mirrors, heated grips and seat, and 150 to 165 miles between fill-ups even at full chat (and that’s before the last ‘panic’ flashing light comes on the dashboard), and this is a decent piece of kit. The Burgman 650 Executive retails at £8799 RRP which isn’t cheap at first glance, but then again Piaggio are charging nigh on £8500 for a 125cc Vespa 946 and if you type Lambretta into a certain auction website you’ll see people asking £8-£10,000 for a couple of models. Suddenly the Burger doesn’t seem so pricy.

1: Don’t risk new riding kit on tour. If untested you’re guaranteed boots will rub, gloves will be uncomfortable, waterproof trousers will leak and the jacket will be so bulky you can’t move. Test it well first.

2: If away for a long time practice packing and unpacking at home first. It took us three days on the road to find the optimum place for everything!

3: Use a map rather than sat nav on your journey. The latter only shows you a very small area or main roads, but a map allows you to see the bigger picture and find alternative, more interesting routes.

4: Don’t be afraid to haggle for a hotel, especially out of season or arriving late. Online booking can also be cheaper than walk-ups, and get loyalty cards and mobile Apps for potential discounts.

5: Learn numbers 1 to 10 in different languages. It will prove useful for many things from fuel to directions, booking hotel rooms and even buying a round of drinks. Just don’t stop at pump 11 at the petrol station!

6: Either mark your mph speedo in kph, or make a note of the main kph limits in countries you’re visiting and learn their mph equivalent so only a quick glance at your speedo is needed when the limit changes as you ride along.

7: Check out in advance deals for mobile phone roaming abroad, including data usage. This could be ideal for checking weather forecasts and booking hotels.

8: With so many gadgets in our lives these days, invest in some double USB chargers. You can get these for both 12v cigarette sockets on the bike, and 3-pin wall plugs, allowing one socket to charge two appliances (and don’t forget your travel adaptor of going abroad!).

9: Even if camping, if the weather is very bad a cheap hotel with secure indoor/ underground parking could prove ideal to dry your kit and tent out.

10: Remember that place names can change from country to country. What is Liege in Belgium to us here in Blighty becomes Luik on local road signs, while Munich in Germany is signed as Monaco in Italy.
