Planning an Adventurous Romantic Honeymoon in Alaska

By Robert Schrader | Published on March 14, 2022

A honeymoon in Alaska allows you to celebrate your love in one of the world's most unspoiled natural settings. From towering walls of ice to lush evergreen forests to vibrant summer wildflowers and blazing autumn colors, it's difficult to imagine a more beautiful place to kick off married life. But as gorgeous as Alaska is, you don't have to just be a spectator when you cruise here. From exhilarating hikes on craggy trails to kayaking in glacier lagoons and immersing yourself in indigenous culture and American history, let America's Last Frontier be the first adventure you have with the love of your life.

Alaska's Top Adventure Vacations For Couples On Honeymoon

Downtown Lodge Houses Stilts, Ketchikan, Alaska

Visit And Embrace Ketchikan's Dueling Cultures

If you board your Alaska honeymoon cruise in Vancouver , your first port of call will be Ketchikan, one of Alaska's southernmost cities. As you disembark the ship onto the historic Creek Street boardwalk, make a reservation at one of the waterfront restaurants for a romantic dinner with breathtaking views.

Before you wine and dine on the seaside, head onshore to work up an appetite with a hike along the Rainbird Trail, a 1.3-mile out-and-back jaunt that offers stunning views of downtown Ketchikan with the mountains of Tongass Narrows rising above the cruise terminal. Or, if you married a history buff, admire the Totem Poles of the Ketchikan area's indigenous Tlingit people and hear stories from the talented wood carvers who show off their skills here.

Take A Trip To Sitka: Wildlife And Wild Eats

Another place you can find adventure on your honeymoon in Alaska is Sitka. Although it's not far from Ketchikan, Sitka offers plenty of experiences and excursions to diversify your time in southern Alaska. If you and your spouse share a love of animals, take a walk on the wild side — or flight on the wild side — at Alaska Raptor Center, a sanctuary that cares for injured American bald eagles and other native birds. Or, make memories at Sitka's Fortress of the Bear, a refuge that allows you to get close (well, not too close) to orphaned black and brown bears being prepped for life in the wild.

Speaking of life in the wild, you can experience that in Sitka, too. Catch a whale-watching cruise off the coast of Baranof Island, or hike Sitka National Historic Park's cultural Totem Trail. You can even experience Alaska's wild with your taste buds, with a romantic meal spotlighting Alaskan reindeer, king crab, or salmon at any number of restaurants in downtown Sitka. It's no wonder so many Alaska cruise honeymoon packages call here!

Greet Glaciers On Your Honeymoon Cruise In Juneau

Alaska's capital city of Juneau might not be the first place you think to visit on your honeymoon in Alaska. However, if you're seeking a romantic adventure that doesn't require a long trek from civilization, you're in the right place with an Alaskan glacier cruise . Take a bus from downtown to Mendenhall Glacier. Enjoy bonding with a hike of the 3.5-mile West Glacier trail or working together on a tandem kayak in the Tracy Arm fjord.

If you do decide to hike to Mendenhall Glacier, keep an eye out for signs guiding you to Nugget Falls, whose bridal veil-style flow is the perfect place for newlyweds to share a spontaneous kiss after working up a sweat.

Flowers Nature Mountains , Juneau, Alaska

Re-create The Gold Rush While Traveling To Skagway

If you take a longer Alaska honeymoon cruise, or start up north in Anchorage instead of embarking from south of the border, Skagway is a place you're sure to stop. Strike relationship gold when you ride the White Pass Railway, which follows the same route as the gold miners during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. If the stunning Yukon Scenery doesn't make you want to hold hands, the cozy train speeding around the bend above century-old mines is sure to do the trick.

Of course, you can hit the trails instead of the rails if you prefer. The Dewey Lakes and Skagway River Bridge trails are both less than a mile from downtown, and take you into scenic spruce forests with enchanting hemlock underbrush. Spend the day in nature, enjoying each other's company in the peaceful forests. Then, dine by candlelight in one of the quaint bistros in historic downtown, collecting the day's memories.

Seward Vacation Begins In The Kenai Fjords

But it doesn't end there. If your honeymoon in Alaska takes you all the way north to the Kenai Fjords near Seward, be sure to stop to take in their beauty. Get in a kayak and paddle out into the fjord, assuming you didn't get your fill of Arctic scenery as the ship passed the Hubbard Glacier en route. Together, admire the breathtaking scenery and diverse animal life including puffins, sea otters, whales, and sea lions.

Add another dimension to your adventure by taking one of many tours centered around the famous Iditarod Dog Sledding competition that takes place here every winter. End your day with a meal or cocktail in Seward's cute town center, and don't be shy about staying up late afterward, especially if you cruise in June or July. Seward, due to its far northerly latitude, is one of Alaska's best places for taking in the midnight sun.

Finding Adventure On Your Alaskan Honeymoon Cruise

To recap some of the adventures you can enjoy during your Alaska honeymoon cruise , here are the top highlights:

Ketchikan: In Alaska's lush southeast, explore an old-style American downtown, or immerse yourself in indigenous culture.

Sitka: A stone's throw from dense, deciduous forests, Sitka is also a regional hub for creative, nature-to-table cuisine.

Juneau: Get out of town while in Alaska's capital, and hike to take in great views of stunning Mendenhall Glacier.

Skagway : Whether you experience it by rail or trail, the legendary Klondike Gold Rush looms large in present-day Skagway.

Seward : Kayak or raft through the Kenai Fjords, or stay onboard and enjoy views of Hubbard Glacier from the ship.

You should also keep in mind that many seafaring Alaska vacations for couples cruise through Inside Passage, an inland sea filled with icebergs, glaciers, clear skies, and crystalline waters.

No matter what form your honeymoon in Alaska takes, it's sure to be a trip you'll never forget. To really seal the deal on your love, combine the fierce natural beauty of America's 49th state with the adrenaline only an Alaskan adventure can send speeding through your veins.

Explore the southern cities of Ketchikan, Sitka, or Juneau, and pair days hiking in the midst of glaciers with nights dining on the charming waterfront. Or head north to Skagway and Seward, where Gold Rush scenery and Icy Fjords serve as a backdrop to treks, train rides, and whitewater rafting. Unforgettable moments happen every day you spend this far north — don't delay any longer and risk missing a single one.

Most Romantic Experiences for a Honeymoon in Alaska

By Sue Bryant

Last updated: June 3rd, 2024

Couple on an Alaska honeymoon

  • Find a Cruise

Not every honeymoon involves basking on a beach. On an Alaska honeymoon, the dramatic grandeur of the state’s snowy mountains, dense forests, and pristine shorelines is a superb backdrop in which active, nature-loving couples can enjoy the experience of a lifetime.

Alaska can be blissfully romantic, from spotting whales together to soaring over glaciers in a floatplane or sharing a kayak to paddle through tranquil fjords and between rocky islands. The pure air, the wildlife sightings, and the thrills of whitewater rafting or zip-lining are a wonderful way to build shared adventures.

Here are 11 Alaska honeymoon ideas that will create an unforgettable start to married life.

Dog Sled Over a Glacier

Couple standing on a glacier on an Alaska honeymoon

Celebrate your newlywed status in dashing style with a thrilling helicopter flight and dog sledding experience across the vast icy expanse of the Denver Glacier, one of the best glaciers in Alaska .

Take off from Skagway and soar over towering peaks, pristine ice fields and dense forest, your captain making a skillful landing on the blue-white glacier. Here, you’ll be met by a team of professional mushers and their powerful sled dogs, raring to go on a race across the snow-covered landscape.

You can sit back and take in the scenery or have a go at mushing yourself, balancing on the rails behind the sled, leaning into the bends and steering your team of enthusiastic canines. Whichever you opt for, the shared thrill of dog sledding in Alaska will be a lasting memory.

Admire the Grandeur of Denali

Couple on an Alaska honeymoon

Denali National Park

One of the best things to do in Alaska is to embrace the savage beauty of Denali National Park, an awe-inspiring six million acres of forest and tundra overlooked by the vast, mist-shrouded Denali itself, 20,310 feet of granite and ice.

The wildlife is rich here, and you could see wolves, caribou, moose, grizzly bears, and Dall sheep, whether you choose to hike, kayak, drift along on a raft, or join an ATV adventure.

Couple whitewater rafting in Denali National Park

Experience river rafting in Alaska and share the adrenaline rush on the Nenana River, which tumbles over several sets of rollercoaster rapids in between more serene sections where you can drift along and gaze at the scenery. Picking the tougher course, through more challenging rapids that foam through a sheer-sided canyon, is a great test of the teamwork that lies ahead in married life.

Alternatively, for a unique vacation idea perfect for couples , take a flightseeing tour over Denali in a light aircraft, soaring over the mountain’s ice fields and rock faces.

See Rescued Raptors in Sitka

Bald eagle spotted at the Alaska Raptor Center

Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka

For a heart-warming experience, one of the best things to do in Sitka is to visit the Alaska Raptor Center. Every year, some 200 bald eagles, owls and falcons are rescued from various mishaps in the wild—getting tangled in overhead wires is a common one—and are rehabilitated and released again.

There’s a special Flight Training Center where these Alaskan birds learn to fly after injury. You can also observe some birds of prey, which would not survive in the wild but now have a permanent home here, at close range.

Bear hunting for salmon

After the visit, follow a hiking trail back to town through sun-dappled forest and past splashing streams. If you’re here during salmon spawning season, which is usually July, you’ll see thousands of silver fish forcing their way upstream, sometimes into the jaws of waiting bears.

Follow the instructions of the park rangers if some of the trails are closed; while spotting a bear from a distance is a thrill, nobody wants a close encounter on their Alaskan honeymoon.

Kayak Up to a Glacier

Woman kayaking in Mendenhall Lake

Mendenhall Lake

Juneau , Alaska’s state capital, is completely hemmed in by mountains, forests and water. It’s also remarkably close to a magnificent phenomenon, the mighty Mendenhall Glacier. Thirteen miles long, its meltwater feeds a milky-green lake surrounded by rock-strewn beaches on which bears often forage.

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of 40 arms of the enormous Juneau Icefield, but what’s unusual about it is the fact that you can get close to its towering, blue-white face in a kayak—one of the best Alaska honeymoon ideas you could have.

As you set out across the lake—one of the best places to kayak in Alaska —you’ll soon come across chunks of ice floating in the water. Every now and then, bigger blocks calve off the glacier’s face, crashing into the water with a thunderous roar.

When you’re not gazing at the glacier, keep an eye out for wildlife. Beavers and otters may be seen here, as well as basking seals.

Beautiful Mendenhall Glacier with Nugget Falls

Nugget Falls

There’s yet more drama when you pull up your kayak onto the stony beach at the foot of Nugget Falls, where 300 feet of misty water plummet out of the Nugget Glacier. Stop and listen to the roar of the falls for a minute, feeling the spray on your face and marveling at the power of nature that Alaska is known for .

Hike the Chilkoot Trail

View from the Chilkoot Trail

Chilkoot Trail

Active, outdoorsy couples will love the challenge of hiking part of the legendary Chilkoot Trail. At one point, it was one of only two routes from nearby Skagway across treacherous Alaskan mountains to the headwaters of the Yukon River and the riches of the goldfields.

The trail starts at the ghost village of Dyea, once teeming with prospectors and their animals. Today, it’s a peaceful place, the old wooden buildings overrun by wildflowers and shrubs. You’ll encounter fellow hikers here rather than hopefuls.

Nelson creek in Dyea

While the entire trail is 33 miles long, you can hike as much of it as you like and then turn around and return to Dyea. You’ll find yourselves stopping constantly to catch your breath and take in sweeping vistas over the spruce and cedar forest to the steely blue ocean beyond.

With the wind rustling in trees and birdsong in the air, the hike is wonderfully romantic.

Spot Magnificent Marine Mammals

Humpback Whale breaching in Alaska

Humpback Whale

Whale watching in Alaska can be an emotional event. Many people find themselves experiencing a visceral reaction when they see their first humpback breaching, or spot a pod of powerful, black-and-white orca at close range. Who better to share this spine-tingling excitement with than your beloved?

Whale-watching in Juneau

Whale-watching in Juneau

You stand a great chance of spotting whales, orca, porpoises and dolphins all along Alaska’s wild, forested Inside Passage , but Juneau is one of the best places for a sighting. Head out into Stephens Passage, a stretch known for marine mammal activity, on a small safari boat, low in the water so you can appreciate the size and power of these extraordinary creatures.

Local guides will explain Alaska’s fragile ecosystem and the feeding and breeding habits of whales and dolphins—and with luck, you’ll be rewarded with a close encounter that will stay with you forever.

Whizz Down a Zipline

ZipRider Cable Car Adventure in Icy Strait Point, Alaska Photo by Werner Bayer on Flickr, licensed under CC0 1.0

There’s nothing like the bonding experience of the sheer rush from soaring 300 feet above the treetops in a harness, suspended from a wire. Welcome to the ZipRider Cable Car Adventure, one of the highlights of Icy Strait Point and, at 5,330 feet, the longest zipline in North America.

This once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan adventure starts off peacefully enough. You’ll be driven through Hoonah, a village that’s home to the indigenous Tlingit, who own and operate Icy Strait Point. All profits from tourism go back into the community.

On the drive up the mountain, keep a lookout for brown bears. Icy Strait Point is on Chichagof Island, which has the highest density of bears in Alaska.

Soon, you’ll be flying too fast to think about wildlife, soaring over the bottle-green forest canopy at up to 60 miles per hour. There are six parallel lines running down the mountain, so ask to ride next to your partner and have a race.

Photos are snapped on the way down, so make sure you know exactly when to strike a pose mid-air for the ultimate Alaska honeymoon memento.

Gaze at a Mighty Glacier

Majestic Hubbard Glacier in Alaska

Hubbard Glacier

Being confronted by the raw power of nature is a chance to reflect on your place in the world, and the wild, ravishing beauty of your surroundings. There’s no better place for such contemplative moments than in the face of Hubbard Glacier , a river of ice that, at 76 miles in length, is the world’s longest tidewater glacier.

The face of this vast wall of ice, striated in shades of anything from gray to deep sapphire, is an astonishing seven miles wide and as high as a 30-story building. In other words, awe-inspiring.

Amazing calving of Hubbard Glacier

You’ll approach Hubbard Glacier via the narrow Disenchantment Bay. This is a particularly active glacier, which makes a visit all the more thrilling.

Chunks of ice the size of houses calve off with a rumbling, cracking roar and a small tsunami as the ice hits the water, ripples spreading as far as the eye can see. As one of the most beautiful places in Alaska , the whole experience is mesmerizing and you won’t want to leave.

Sail Dreamy Fjords

Ferry sailing along Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park

A cruise through the Kenai Fjords National Park has to be one of the dreamiest and most rewarding Alaskan honeymoon experiences. Much of the landscape here is only accessible by water, where rock faces plummet into the glassy fjords and pristine forest lines rocky Alaskan beaches .

One of the best things to do in Seward is to take a boat trip and sail Resurrection Bay, with skilled captains steering you close to the glacier faces in Aialik Bay, Northwestern Lagoon, McCarty fjord and North Arm to spot chunks of ice calving off into the deep water.

Sea lion spotted on a rocky cliff

Bring your binoculars as the wildlife-spotting here is legendary. You can see some of the most popular animals in Alaska here, such as humpback whales and pods of black-and-white orca cruising the water and colonies of sea lions lying on the rocks.

Look upwards for agile mountain goats scaling the cliff faces, and keep an eye out for bald eagles perched imperiously on high rocks, scanning the water for food.

Take a kayak tour for an even more away-from-it-all experience in one of the best national parks in Alaska . The best operators take you by boat to the most isolated spots of this already remote place, where you’re completely immersed in nature at its most beautiful.

Hike the Tongass National Forest

Tongass National Forest, one of the best destinations for Alaska honeymoon

Tongass National Forest

Hikes in Alaska don’t have to be physically testing; a leisurely stroll along the sun-dappled trails of the dense Tongass National Forest near Ketchikan can be just as romantic as a challenging trek.

Bear spotted at the Tongass National Forest

There’s a good chance of spotting bears foraging or snoozing in the trees, or moose standing like statues under the green canopy of hemlock, spruce and cedar. You may even be lucky enough to spot a wolf; these shy creatures make their home in the 500 square miles of the Tongass, the world’s largest temperate rainforest.

Look out for flashes of silver as salmon force their way up rushing streams, and through gaps in the trees, spot bald eagles wheeling overhead. Breathe in the pure air and let your mind and body revel in the peace.

Ride the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway

Train passing along the woods in Alaska

White Pass and Yukon Route Railway

One of the best things to do in Skagway is to step back in time for a journey in a vintage railcar along the narrow-gauge White Pass and Yukon Route Railway.

You’ll be following in the footsteps of thousands of prospectors who flocked here during the Gold Rush, although they enjoyed considerably less comfort, struggling through mud, rock, and ice.

Majestic view of Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls

You can see parts of the White Pass from the train as it rattles along the contours of sheer-sided valleys and over trestle bridges for 20 miles, crossing the border into Canada. Along the way, look out for the romantic and appropriately named Bridal Veil Falls. You’ll soon see why this is regarded as one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world.

Small-ship cruise lines provide the ideal setting for intimate moments and authentic exploration with your loved one.

Planning Your Alaskan Cruise Honeymoon

When planning your Alaskan cruise honeymoon, there are several essential aspects to consider to make your trip unforgettable. Here’s a breakdown of key factors to help you prepare for your romantic adventure in Alaska.

Best Time to Go on an Alaskan Cruise for Honeymooners

Alaska’s cruising season typically runs from May to September, with each month offering a unique experience. May and September are ideal for quieter cruises with fewer crowds, while June, July, and August are popular months with longer daylight hours for more sightseeing opportunities. For honeymooners seeking a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, June is often considered the best time to visit.

Budgeting for Your Honeymoon Cruise

Setting a budget for your Alaskan cruise honeymoon is crucial to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable trip. Costs may vary depending on the cruise line, cabin type, shore excursions, and additional amenities. Consider all-inclusive packages that cover meals, drinks, and onboard activities to better manage your expenses. Plan ahead and allocate funds for any extra experiences you wish to indulge in during your voyage.

Packing Tips for Alaskan Weather

Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable, so packing appropriately is essential for a comfortable journey. Romance on an Alaskan Honeymoon Cruise

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

The glaciers and natural beauty of Alaska provide a romantic setting for a honeymoon. An Alaskan honeymoon cruise can give newlyweds a chance to sail through this spectacular state with plenty of opportunities to celebrate onboard and on land.

When you book your cruise, you can pick from two Alaska cruise honeymoon packages that include such amenities as champagne, chocolates, and roses waiting in your stateroom, as well as spa treatment options. You can even arrange for a champagne breakfast in bed on any morning of your Alaskan honeymoon cruise.

While your ship is docked in Whittier, consider kayaking in Prince William Sound. You and your partner will learn the basics of kayaking, then paddle through the scenic waters with a guide. Don't forget your camera — you may be surprised by the marine life here.

No Alaska honeymoon is complete without dining at a log cabin restaurant. In Fairbanks, you can dine on local cuisine before taking a river raft under the "Midnight Sun" on the Chena River. There, you'll have the opportunity to look for moose, lynx, bald eagles, mink, and other native wildlife.

You'll also have the opportunity to be part of an amazing small group adventure on your Alaskan honeymoon cruise by participating in the Whales, Bears, and Glaciers Adventure in Juneau. The two of you will be able to peek through the blueberry bushes or enjoy a nature trail as you try to spot bears with a trained guide. On this adventure, you will also head on a whale watching cruise before you fly off over some of Alaska's most stunning glaciers , including Mendenhall Glacier.

When you choose an Alaskan cruise honeymoon, you have the opportunity to explore even more of the state's natural wonders. For the ultimate honeymoon, consider continuing your Alaskan cruise adventure by choosing an Alaskan cruisetour .

You can choose to add extra days to your stay in Alaska before or after your cruise. This time will give you the opportunity to stay at an exclusive Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge . Spend your time getting a good look at Denali— the tallest mountain in North America — on an excursion via plane, discovering native wildlife, and viewing the spectacular glaciers found in the more than 6 million acres of Denali National Park.

A Taste of Alaska Lodge

Best Alaska Honeymoon for Seeing the Northern Lights

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Planning an Alaska honeymoon in Fairbanks? A Taste of Alaska Lodge is a great choice for an Alaska honeymoon lodge in the wilderness. The rooms at A Taste of Alaska Lodge are akin to the location, rustic. If Alaska honeymoon cabins are your dream setting, the log cabin interior with antique furniture, snowshoes and other vintage touches is for you.

Planning to enjoy nearby hiking, fishing and sightseeing? The location is ideal for honeymooners any time of year. In the winter, the remote location is perfect for taking a short stroll and catching the Northern Lights on your honeymoon in Alaska.

Pro Tip: You may want to reserve a larger cabin with a kitchen to enjoy your catch if you’re here on an Alaska fishing honeymoon. But the free breakfast is excellent for honeymooners who’d rather let someone else do the cooking.

Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites

Best for Mountain Views on an Alaskan Honeymoon

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Fancy a room with a premiere location in downtown Juneau? Silverbow Inn Hotel & Suites sits along the Gastineau Channel, the gorgeous inlet between continental Alaska and Douglass Island. Rooms are like small urban apartments, perfect for honeymooners who want to feel like locals when spending a few days in Juneau. But if you stay at Silverbow Inn on your Alaska honeymoon and have some leftover cash in your honeymoon fund , book one of the top-floor suites. At a reasonable price, you’ll have nearly double the space, a full kitchen and gorgeous views of downtown Juneau or the surrounding mountains. Access to a washer and dryer, a shared hot tub and complimentary breakfast are all perks that make this one of our favorite ideas for a honeymoon in Alaska. Want to enjoy one of the best seafood meals in Alaska? Walk over to Tracy’s King Crab Shack and sample the famous king crab legs right next to the water. It doesn’t get much better.

The Hotel Captain Cook

$$$

Best For a Luxurious Alaska Honeymoon

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Looking for an upscale resort for your Alaska honeymoon? The Hotel Captain Cook in the heart of Downtown Anchorage is a four-star hotel with more amenities than you’ll find in most Alaska honeymoon spots.

From the rooftop restaurant serving French-influenced fine dining to the cozy English pub with a menu and decor that feels more like you’re in New York City than Anchorage – you won’t find better dining options in an Alaska hotel.

The rooms lean traditional and are comfortable enough for a week-long stay. Ceiling fans keep you cool during summer honeymoons in Alaska, and the comfortable beds and blackout curtains are perfect for sleeping in.

And best of all, the short walking distance to the top attractions in Anchorage makes this our favorite option for an all-around great honeymoon in Alaska.

Gilmore Hotel, Trademark Collection by Wyndham

Best for a Honeymoon in Ketchikan

Gilmore Hotel

There’s a lot to do when spending a couple of nights in Ketchikan during your Alaska honeymoon. Gilmore Hotel   is close to many of the top attractions in the small coastal city and a wonderful place to base your special vacation. You’ll also want to explore what’s around the quaint hotel in the historic neighborhood near the cruise ports. Some of our favorite Alaska honeymoon destinations, like Totem Heritage Center and the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, are steps away. The rooms are on the smaller side but packed with character, and it’s the perfect location for history buffs who want to spend the night in a historic property. Free Wifi, airport shuttles and wake-up service are great options for travel-weary honeymooners who wish to have a few details planned out in advance. Speaking of plans… fancy some freshly caught seafood? Head down to Annabelle’s Famous Keg and Chowder House to sample local shellfish in a bustling setting. If you’re looking for the best place to spend the night in Ketchikan on your Alaska Honeymoon, you’ll want to consider staying at this historic property.

Alaska  Honeymoon Tips: What You Need to Know

How to get to alaska .

Alaska

Most honeymooners reach Alaska in one of two ways. The two easiest ways to reach Alaska are flying to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) or taking a honeymoon cruise to one of several ports in Alaska. Either way is great for experiencing Alaska, but we can’t help but lean towards planning a cruise for your Alaska honeymoon.

The Best Alaska Honeymoon Destinations

Denali national park and preserve.

Denali National Park and Preserve

Is there a more famous choice for Alaska honeymoon destinations than Denali National Park and Preserve? Not that we know of. Schedule a few hours (or much longer) exploring the vast nature preserve that’s larger than several states in the USA, and you’ll quickly know why. From dogsledding to climbing the highest mountain in the USA, you can plan an epic Alaska honeymoon itinerary in Denali that takes up your entire vacation if you want to. Not up for a 3-week trek up 20,000 feet on your Alaska honeymoon? Not to worry. Enjoy wonderful hikes, bicycle rides, and nature photography locations all around this unforgettable honeymoon destination.

Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park

Thinking of going on an Alaska honeymoon cruise? The Kenai Fjords National Park is the perfect location to set sail with your significant other for a truly unique Alaska honeymoon experience. What should you expect to see on a guided tour through the unrivaled Alaskan fjords? Towering peaks, massive glaciers, whale-watching and the occasional mountain goat sighting are some incredible sights to share on one of the premier Alaska honeymoon spots. Rather stay on land? If you’re up for an adventure, you can explore the hiking trails around the park. However, be warned that you may face numerous hazards, including avalanches, extreme temperatures and enormous falling chunks of ice that occur seasonally. So do yourself a favor and check in with the park rangers before setting out on a romantic expedition.

Juneau Alaska

Keen to visit the capital city on your Alaskan honeymoon? Juneau is a really big city, in fact, one of the largest in the USA… by land mass.

There are only around 30,000 people that call the sprawling metropolis home, giving honeymooners more than enough space to spread their wings and discover secluded spots to explore.

Glaciers, fjords, waterfalls, and even rainforests (Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure features non-native plants in a gorgeous garden) are a few sightseeing opportunities in Juneau.

There are also museums, mill tours, and monuments for honeymooners wanting to learn the history and culture of Alaska.

Is Alaska good for a honeymoon for foodies? You bet. And Juneau has some great restaurants, distilleries, and breweries to hang out at between outdoor adventures. Going on an Alaskan cruise honeymoon? You’ll likely pass by Ketchikan or even dock there when traveling along the famous Inside Passage. We recommend booking Alaska honeymoon hotels in this smaller city in Southern Alaska to explore the many nearby attractions. Cultural landmarks and events include the Totem Heritage Center, where you’ll see remarkable displays preserved from indigenous cultures, or the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show – offering a chance to see loggers compete in challenges centered around the historical industry. Want to grab a snack or do some shopping? Creek Street is a scenic village where you can take an afternoon stroll.

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

If you’re looking for Alaska honeymoon packages that allow you to experience Alaska’s unique food, culture and nature from one home base, Anchorage is an action-packed destination.

Immerse yourself in the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and take the 1.5-mile loop to see timberwolves, brown bears, lynxes and moose in a private sanctuary. Or head out into the wilderness at Chugach State Park and catch amazing views of the Portage Glacier from the historic Portage Pass Trail.

One distinct advantage of staying in Anchorage is the vast array of food choices. Wherever you go, seafood is likely on the menu and as fresh as you’ll find anywhere.

Fairbanks, Alsaka

Going on an Alaska fishing honeymoon? Head to Fairbanks, and you can fish day or night in the “Land of the Midnight Sun” in many different spots along the highway. But fishing isn’t the only reason we love Fairbanks. The 24 hours of sunlight in the summer are contrasted by the best Alaska honeymoon Northern Lights viewing destinations you’ll find in winter. Ready to take a break from exploring the great outdoors? Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum and Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center are two interesting educational experiences, the latter focusing on the rich history of Native American Culture in Alaska.

The Best Time to Visit Alaska

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

The best time to plan your Alaska honeymoon really depends on what you want to do while you’re there.

Why? Well, more than nearly any other place, weather and conditions can vary immensely.

If you’re interested in skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or just snuggling up by the fireplace with your new forever partner, winter in Alaska is magical. But you can also experience the Land of the Midnight Sun and the endless sunshine that falls upon the mountains, rivers and fields near Fairbanks in the summer.

You’re in for a unique honeymoon experience whenever you plan your honeymoon in Alaska.

How Long to Spend on Your Alaska Honeymoon

Alaska

If you’re planning your honeymoon to Alaska, you might wonder how long you should set aside for your once-in-a-lifetime trip. Being the largest state in the USA , Alaska honeymoon trips are generally best if you plan to spend at least one week. Our opinion? Ten days is the perfect amount of time to schedule all your Alaska honeymoon ideas and still have time for some R&R.

How Much Does an Alaska Honeymoon Cost?

Alaska

Because many honeymoons in Alaska are at least one-week trips involving multiple locations, Alaska honeymoons can make a dent in your honeymoon fund . For an average honeymoon Alaska adventure, you’ll want to budget between $7,000-$10,000 total. You can also save money by finding budget accommodations or scheduling your trip for springtime.

Alaska’s most populated city, Anchorage, is also the state’s cultural hub. Settled in 1914, it was incorporated as a city in late 1920. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, established in 1967, starts just outside the city, with the finish line in Nome.

We recommend spending a day exploring downtown Anchorage, the heart of the city. Stop in at the Log Cabin Visitor Centre to find necessary travel information, and plan your day from there. From here, you can visit the Botanical Gardens and plenty of museums, galleries, and statues.

Anchorage is an excellent base if you want to view some magnificent glacier vistas. With over 80 different glaciers within 50 miles of the city, you’re spoiled for choice. A trip down to Whittier is worth it – you can join a day cruise on the Prince William Sound, which boasts the most tidewater glaciers in North America.

Denali National Park

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Featuring North America’s tallest mountain, surrounded by over 6 million acres of wilderness, Denali National Park is rich in history. Dinosaur footprints have been found, dating back millennia, and human settlements have been discovered, dating back more than 11 000 years.

One of the best ways to see the park is to travel in one of their busses along Denali Park Road. Currently closed at mile 43 due to a landslide, the rest of the road is due to reopen in 2023.

Another great option is to hike on one of the many phenomenal hiking trails in the park. If you prefer to be out on the water, then a boat trip on the Nenana River will suit you well – you can take a scenic float or adventure through the rapids.

Kenai Fjords National Park

Spanning more than 600 000 acres outside of Seward, this magnificent park was established in 1980 to protect some of Alaska’s most pristine wilderness and fauna. It is known for its phenomenal scenery and abundant wildlife.

Joining one of the half or full-day boat tours will allow you to see some of the stunning glaciers, along with some of the wide variety of sea life – you can also enjoy some whale watching on the way.

To find out just how drastically the glacier has shrunk over the years, you can hike the glacier overlook trail and the glacier loop trail. Along the trail, you’ll see year markers showing the glacier’s size that year. Alternatively, you can take a leisurely drive along Exit Glacier road, which connects Exit Glacier with Seward.

Settled in 1880, Juneau was originally a gold mining town before becoming Alaska’s capital in 1906. Located in the American panhandle, this interesting city is considered an island city, as it can only be reached via sea or air, thanks to its dramatic mountainous surroundings.

Spend the day learning about Juneau’s fascinating history by visiting the Juneau City Museum and the Alaska State Museum, and if you’re up for the walk, a visit to the Last Chance Mining Museum is worth its weight in gold – make sure to see the mining cars at the back.

When it comes to food, the Alaskans have had to learn to be innovative with hunting, fishing, and foraging. Take the Juneau Food Tour, run by a local, to taste some delicious Alaskan delicacies. To see the town from a bird’s eye view, take a ride on the Mount Robert’s tram – an excellent way to ease the legs after walking around downtown Juneau.

Top Excursions & Activities To Do On An Alaska Honeymoon

What to Pack for an Alaska Honeymoon

Hiking Through Autumn Tundra In Chugach State Park, Alaska

Even if you're taking your Alaska honeymoon in the summer, you'll want to make sure your packing checklist will prepare you for a range of climates. If traveling by cruise ship , keep in mind breezes can be cooler while at sea. Pack items you can layer, like sweatshirts and cardigans. Having plenty of warm socks in your honeymoon luggage will add to the coziness of a wilderness lodge, too.

You'll be doing a decent amount of hiking and walking. Comfortable and sturdy shoes and hiking boots will keep feet protected. Sunscreen, a raincoat, sunglasses and an umbrella will ensure you're ready to go, rain or shine.

Stylish clothes for more upscale restaurants are nice to have, too—an Alaskan vacation isn't just about roughing it. The state isn't known for its beaches, but some hotels have pools and hot tubs. Pack a swimsuit if you plan to take a dip.

Travel Insurance

You’d rather not think about all of the things that might go wrong on your romantic getaways in Alaska, but these things can and do happen. We like to think of travel insurance as a safety net, as it’s saved our butts big time on more than one occasion. We had our bags stolen, with passports, cameras and a decent chunk of money, and thanks to travel insurance we were able to replace these valuable items.

I fell ill on our honeymoon and had to spend a week in the hospital, which racked up a huge debt. Without travel insurance, we would have been in thousands of dollars of debt. It’s not worth the risk to travel without insurance! Keep your mind of ease on your Alaska honeymoon by travelling smarter and safer with World Nomads travel insurance . These guys are the best in the business with affordable coverage for you and your lover on your Alaska honeymoon travels.

Visa Information

Before booking your Alaska honeymoon make sure that your visa is sorted and approved. We always organise our visas through Visa HQ . They’re a reputable company that arranges visas for the vast majority of nationalities. No matter your nationality or travel location, Visa HQ will sort you out!

What people say about us

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.

He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.

Dan and Michelle were such a joy to work with! They really made our trip and cruise successful. Based on our needs they were able to help us identify and schedule what side trips and activities would best suit our interests.

After this trip I will be using a travel agent for future vacations…just can’t wait for the next one they help us plan!

Honeymoon Always has been fantastic- our trips were 1000% better because of their help. The first time we used them we wanted to have a fun trip with some cultural experiences, good food, not too packed, and for a good price. It was fantastic and now we've used them for several trips in Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean. Each trip was so different but they were able to make each one special and unique to our needs.

Considering an Alaska Honeymoon? Here’s Where to Go

There's an abundance of adventure to be had in our country's wildest state.

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Getty Images

Open any travel magazine these days and you’re likely to see some sort of news about a new lodge setting up shop in the Kenai Peninsula, a new foodie destination opening in Anchorage, or some photo essay about one of the many picturesque towns in Southeast Alaska (many of which are accessible only by boat). The fact is, Alaska is trending. It’s been trending for a while, but something in particular over the past couple of years has drawn more tourists than ever to "The Last Frontier.” Maybe it has to do with climate change and people discovering a newfound appreciation for America’s wildest state, or maybe it’s because Alaska Airlines always seems to launch new, affordable routes, opening up the state like never before. Either way, if you and your significant other are intrigued by all that Alaska has to offer, we know it can be difficult to know where to start. There’s a lot to see here—enough for two lifetimes, at least—and that’s why we’ve whittled it down to this checklist of the state’s greatest hits. Consider it a choose-your-own-adventure for any Alaska honeymoon.

The current outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) has been declared a pandemic by the  World Health Organization . As the situation remains fluid, we’ll be sharing tips and stories from industry experts to give you of-the-moment advice and help you navigate wedding planning today. For the most up-to-date guidelines and latest on travel restrictions and requirements, check the  CDC  and U.S. Department of State websites.

A day or two in Anchorage

As this is most likely where you’ll fly into, Anchorage is a great place to catch your breath for a day or two before delving into the state’s wilder places. Alaska’s largest city is living proof that Americans can build thriving communities no matter how remote. A visit to the Eklutna Historical Park   gives an in-depth look into the Russian influences and native culture at work in this area. The  Alaska State Trooper Museum  and  Alaska Aviation Museum  are quirky diversions that give a different view of the state’s history. For a romantic dinner, there’s nowhere better than  Crow’s Nest located 20 stories up—the salmon belly crudo is the stuff that Alaska foodie dreams are made of.

A cruise through Southeast Alaska

Love them or hate them, cruises are a foolproof, surefire way to see huge swathes of Alaska at once. And while most of the state’s cruises focus on the “Inside Passage” (the southeast part of the state, basically between Anchorage and Vancouver), not all cruises are created equal. You’ll want something large enough to offer a variety of excursions so the two of you can tailor-make your itinerary, but also something small enough to still feel intimate and romantic.  Regent Seven Seas  hits the mark in that ideal middle-zone. Most excursions are included in your fare, but it’s also possible to order off their menu of upgrades, with such experiences as held-hiking atop glaciers, or private Alaskan king salmon dinners for two.

Adventure-seeking in the Aleutians

Make no mistake—with parts that are closer to Russia than to Seattle, Alaska’s ultra-remote chain of Aleutian Islands are not for the luxury-seeking couple . They are expensive and time-consuming to get to, and there is very little there in terms of tourism infrastructure (you might be better off searching for Airbnbs than proper hotels, in some instances), but the sheer act of journeying to a place like the island of Unalaska together is exactly the kind of once-in-a-lifetime adventure that thrill-seeking couples crave.  Just imagine spending a day in  Dutch Harbor , the town where hit TV show  Deadliest Catch  is filmed: After a morning of watching tanker-sized fishing ships processing the day’s wild Alaska pollock catch, the two of you can go for a hike up Mount Ballyhoo before settling in for happy hour at the infamous   Norwegian Rat Saloon , talking about the day’s adventures and wondering how such a remote town can somehow be the biggest, most important fishing port in the United States.

A backcountry sojourn

No trip to Alaska is complete without some sort of stay in the wilderness. What could be more romantic than being off-the-grid, with nothing to distract you two aside from the Northern Lights and the occasional grizzly? There are so many lodges to explore here, but here are some highlights: spotting the world’s largest grizzly bears from the comfort of your luxury one-bedroom cabin at the  Kodiak Brown Bear Center  on Kodiak Island; falling asleep under the northern lights just south of Denali National Park at  Chelatna Lake Lodge ;   or   indulging in glacier-stream-fed, home-grown oysters at  Ridgewood Wilderness Lodge .   Bring some hiking boots , perhaps some bug spray, and an adventurous attitude—there’s so much to do at these places that you two won’t miss having cell service.

Heli-skiing

If the two of you are real thrill-seekers, there’s nothing that will get your pulse pounding faster than a couple days of heli-skiing . Depending on the operator you choose, it’s possible to find some premium Alaska powder as late as June in some areas. There are a number of operators— Silverton Mountain Guides , Black Ops Valdez , Points North Heli-Adventures , Chugach Powder Guides —so it’s just a matter of figuring out which company has availability at a time that works with your itinerary. As you’ve probably gathered by this point, our country’s Last Frontier is truly filled with nothing but options for a special, once-in-a-lifetime romantic getaway.

Alaska cruise tips: When to go, what to pack, how to choose, and more

  • I’m a seasoned traveler who firmly believes the best way to experience Alaska’s incredible scenery is on an Alaska cruise.
  • Think of an Alaska cruise like a floating hotel that carries you to a breathtaking new destination each day.
  • Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or have lots of shipboard experience, these tips will help you make most of your Alaska cruise vacation.

I’ve cruised all over the world, and I can honestly say there’s no other cruise experience that quite compares to an Alaska cruise. Seeing the untouched landscapes, glacier-dotted shorelines, and bears at play really puts life into perspective—and makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience no matter your age.

Many people choose to make an Alaska cruise their first foray into cruising . First timers are attracted to the state’s majestic beauty, but not necessarily savvy to the bounty that a cruise ship offers. If you’re considering a cruise to America’s Last Frontier, here’s how to make the most of it.

EVERYTHING’S INCLUDED: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

1. You can save money by cruising to Alaska in May, June, and September

The Alaska cruise season is brief. Alaska cruises start each year in May and run through early October. The most popular (and expensive) months to cruise are July and August, coinciding with summer family vacations and translating into ships that are often filled with kids.

If you aren’t tethered to a school-year schedule ( or don’t mind taking your kids out of school ), you may want to consider a shoulder season cruise to Alaska. This translates to sailings in late May, June, or September. On these shoulder season cruises, you’re likely to find lower prices and less crowded cruise ships.

2. Pack for all four seasons (and don’t forget binoculars)

Alaska’s climate is notoriously unpredictable. I advise packing warm clothes that are easy to layer on and peel off. Bringing gloves, hats, and a scarf is not unreasonable. On the flip side, Alaska is quite far north, and long summer days offer midnight sun and potentially warm temperatures. Many ships have swimming pools and hot tubs, so don’t forget bathing suits and sunscreen .

A comfortable pair of walking shoes are a must if you want to keep your feet feeling good as you explore each port of call. Binoculars can help you spot a range of animals in their natural habitat. Make sure each person in your group has their own pair so they can spot Alaska’s Big Five land mammals (Black and brown bears, moose, wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep) as well as orcas, puffins, and bald eagles.

3. Shore excursions are a must

As wonderful as shipboard life is, to really experience Alaska you need to disembark at each port of call. Getting off the ship is a great way to get in touch with native Alaskan culture that’s reflected in towering totem poles, hand-woven decorative fabrics, and other native crafts. Alaska cruises offer dozens of shore excursions from whale-watching to dogsledding, many curated with kids and families in mind.

4. How to choose between the Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska

The sheltered waterway known as the Inside Passage is a very popular cruise route. As your ship weaves through a patchwork of islands, with fjords and glaciers thrown in for good measure, you’ll witness wildlife and scenery that looks lifted from a postcard. Alaska cruises taking this route usually make a round-trip journey from either Seattle or Vancouver, cities that have major airports with numerous flight options.

WHERE TO GO: 25 best family vacation spots in the U.S. for all ages

The other popular cruise itinerary is the Gulf of Alaska, a stretch of the Pacific Ocean that hugs the southern coast. This equally scenic itinerary is usually a one-way sailing, departing from Seattle or Vancouver and terminating in either Whittier or Seward, Alaska (or vice versa). If you want to add on post- or pre-cruise destinations such as Anchorage and Denali National Park, starting or ending your cruise in Alaska makes it easy to do so.

Keep in mind you will arrive and depart from different cities, requiring the purchase of a multi-city airline ticket (unless you live within driving distance from Seattle or Vancouver), which can be quite costly.

5. Utilize the onboard naturalist

Booking an Alaska cruise cruise that has an onboard naturalist is a no-brainer. On my recent Princess cruise to Alaska, our Canadian naturalist went above and beyond his job’s description, spending each evening on deck 16 hanging out with passengers, helping us spot humpback whales and see the Northern Lights until well past midnight.

Small ship cruise lines such as  Lindblad Expeditions, which partners with National Geographic , offer families a deep dive into the natural world with the expertise of naturalists who cater to curious kids as they learn environmental stewardship.

If your ship takes you to Glacier Bay National Park, park rangers are usually brought on board as the ship cruises through the park, helping you to better understand the fragile beauty surrounding you.

6. Spring for an exterior stateroom

While interior cabins will save you money, Alaska’s eye-candy beauty and abundance of wildlife merit the added expense of an exterior stateroom (with a balcony if available). From the moment you wake up, you’ll be treated to spellbinding scenery at all hours.

7. Don’t skip the buffet

While many large and mid-size cruise ships promote their specialty restaurants, these dining options usually incur an extra fee, which can quickly add up when you’re booking a table for your entire family. The ship’s buffet is a low-stakes, no-additional-cost way for kids to sample global cuisine. If crowds are a deterrent, hit the buffet a bit early or late, when lines tend to be thinner.

MAKE MEMORIES: 50 family vacation ideas for the best trip ever

On my family’s recent Alaska cruise, we were thrilled with the smorgasbord of edible delights from across the world. We couldn’t get enough of the authentic Indian food, feasting on tandoori chicken and fragrant curries served with refreshing raitas and savory chutneys. The Chinese food section let us customize our stir-fry with veggies and proteins of our choice, including tofu, perfect for my vegetarian daughter.

8. Be prepared for some seasickness

The Inside Passage is sheltered, equaling waters that are usually quite calm. However, if your itinerary crosses the Gulf of Alaska, the sea tends to be rougher. Whichever route your ship takes, being prepared with seasickness remedies is essential. I don’t suffer from sea sickness but my daughter uses Sea-Band acupressure wristbands with good results.

9. Take advantage of onboard activities

Most large and mid-size cruise ships sailing Alaska itineraries have age-appropriate supervised clubs for kids and teens at no additional cost. These programs give young passengers the opportunity to spend time with their peers and try new activities, freeing parents to enjoy a bit of adult time.

BRING THE KIDS: 7 great cruise lines for families (and their 12 most kid-friendly ships)

Cruise ships offer a range of ways for families to spend time together. Try a game of pickleball on all Holland America ships or enjoy a ride on the bumper cars at Royal Caribbean’s SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity complex at sea. Evening entertainment, including Broadway-style musical performances on Disney cruises, is always a highlight as well.

10. Discounts for kids are real and significant

Keep an eye out for periodic kids sail free deals where children ages 18 and under can sail for no charge beyond taxes, fees, and port expenses. These promotions make a family vacation more affordable. Holland America is one cruise line that offers these bargains frequently on Alaska cruises, while small ships such as Lindblad and UnCruise always offer a $500 discount for children.

Silver Origin in the Galapagos Islands

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Perhaps you're a nature-loving, adventuresome duo who thinks the best honeymoon cruise involves exploring unspoiled islands like the Galapagos and meeting the most amazing endemic species close-up. That is, if you can do so in style.

The 100-passenger, environmentally sensitive Silver Origin, a ship purpose-built for the region by Silversea Cruises , ticks all those boxes. The most elegant ship sailing the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador's coast, Silver Origin delivers nature-based exploration from a luxurious home base.

All-suite accommodations, designed in neutral hues with rattan and richly woven furnishings, create an upscale sense of place. Soak away the day snapping pictures of flightless cormorants from your ocean-view bathtub; bonus if you spot a whisker-twitching sea lion.

Your butler — yes, all suite occupants enjoy butler service — is a white-gloved, tuxedo-clad personal pamperer who will happily draw an aromatherapy bath, scatter rose petals and light battery-powered candles to flicker around the tub.

When you can be lured out of your luxurious suite, you can dive deep into Galapagos adventures, exploring several of the 19 UNESCO World Heritage Site islands, including Isla Bartolome and Isabela, with a team of high-energy expedition experts. They'll lead you on riveting explorations via Zodiacs to seek out marine life or on foot to tiptoe close to wildlife, such as blue-footed boobies, scarlet Sally Lightfoot crabs and giant tortoises. The ship's Basecamp, information central for all facts Galapagos, makes learning fun with an interactive wall.

When you're not exploring, there's much to savor on board. Tuck into authentic Ecuadorian cuisine like freshly prepared ceviche and red snapper. Then, learn to make such dishes yourself so you can make them back home as a couple.

Hop on a treadmill in the gym, or refresh your wedding manicure in the beauty salon. For a romantic evening, sip craft cocktails while listening to the Explorer Lounge pianist, or cuddle around the Deck 7 fire pit, watching for meteors shooting across the sky.

Celebrity Ascent in the Eastern Mediterranean

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Doesn't every honeymooner deserve to feast on a magic carpet? Celebrity Cruises ' 3,260-passenger Celebrity Ascent lets you share a meal or drinks with your new spouse on a cantilevered platform (aptly named the Magic Carpet) that can rise 15 decks above the sea.

If that type of modern, edgy experience is what you crave on your trip of a lifetime, this stunning 17-deck vessel will have you celebrating in a big way. Stroll hand in hand through the reimagined Rooftop Garden, with cantilevered float pools extending over the water's edge. Share a soak in a two-story, martini glass-shaped hot tub.

Foodie couples will surely fawn over Le Voyage, the first at-sea restaurant from superstar chef Daniel Boulud, Celebrity's global culinary ambassador. Boulud promises globally inspired plates like smoked salmon loin with cream of caviar, pickled cucumber and dill in a stunner of an establishment.

And, oh, the Greek islands are made for romance. Fall in love all over again as you stroll on the soft sands of the curvaceous Mykonos shoreline with pelicans swooping above and friendly fishermen tipping their caps to you.

In Santorini, sip local wines, buy island-made ceramics or visit tombs dating to the ninth century (if that's your thing). In Athens, go gaga over the Acropolis and the treasure-filled Acropolis Museum. Explore ancient sites from Celebrity Ascent's berth in Katakolon, Greece, before heading to the beach for sun and sand with your sweetheart.

For the ultimate honeymoon digs, book a suite in The Retreat, a swanky enclave within the ship. Celebrity's newest Retreat introduces an expanded two-story sun deck, a private lounge and the Luminae restaurant starring Boulud's signature dishes.

Retreat dwellers relish the best of both Celebrity worlds: more space and privacy by day, along with Ascent's 32 eateries and buzzy bars at night. (The Martini Bar, in the piazza-style Grand Plaza center, is a cool hangout.) Keep date night going with interactive theater and comedy shows, or dance until dawn to DJ-spun music.

Create a temporary home together in the wellness-leaning AquaClass Sky Suites (with special spa perks) or the Edge Villas, two-story suites with private plunge pools. If you really want to splurge, snag a 1,892-square-foot Iconic Suite with a 689-square-foot veranda. This giant residence ensures that if your in-laws tag along (fine, if they foot the bill), you'd hardly see them.

Wind Surf in the Caribbean

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Seeking a yacht-like honeymoon where sails billow in the breeze? Pick Windstar 's Wind Surf for mellow Caribbean island-hopping cruises, where turquoise seas are calm and the wind is gentle. Few ships are better meccas for romance than this 342-passenger, five-mast ship. Best of all, the onboard ambience is casual, so packing is a snap.

On such a small ship, expect countless personal touches, from signature bowls of fragrant flowers and fresh fruit in your cabin to the softest Egyptian cotton linens. Crew members learn mighty quickly who's honeymooning — there's nearly one crew member per two passengers — and magically appear when you want service and vanish when you don't. Wind Surf lacks private verandas, but on a ship this small, intimate outdoor spaces are easy to find.

When you're ready to socialize, meet fellow passengers at the alfresco Terrace Bar at the ship's aft, where marvelous martinis are shaken and glasses of Champagne are poured. Afterward, head to dinner in the main restaurant AmphorA, French-inspired Stella Bistro or under the stars at Candles Grill.

The spacious fitness center might beckon, but perhaps you'll like the water sports platform best. Snorkel, water ski, kayak and windsurf. If water and weather conditions align, you're in for total fun. Then, go ashore and lose yourself in the magic of Caribbean isles, each one different from the last.

The European vibes in St. Barts are downright sexy, with nearly everyone speaking French and billionaire yachts bobbing in the azure sea. You'll find shopping and dining as fine as in Paris. St. Maarten lures with pastel-painted shops and authentic Creole restaurants. Find a secluded corner on the powder-soft white sands of Jost Van Dyke, or snorkel amid the most colorful fish imaginable. Don't miss wading through the natural pools at The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Clean up in the WindSpa or the salon, where you can get manicures and pedicures, facials and body wraps. Afterward, book an acupuncture treatment, sure to eliminate any remaining stress from the wedding whirlwind.

Norwegian Prima in Iceland and Northern Europe

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Iceland's on everyone's bucket list, so why not check that box on your honeymoon? If the weather's chilly, your partner can keep you warm.

Consider this getaway for a summer honeymoon when Norwegian Cruise Line 's 3,100-passenger Norwegian Prima , the first in the line's newest class, sails around Northern Europe.

In Iceland, see active volcanoes and glaciers, hike wildflower-strewn mountains and soak in iconic hot springs. Gawk at the beyond-beautiful fjords in Norway, explore sophisticated Amsterdam and wander the cobbled streets of Bruges, the quaint Belgian city that charms with canals and medieval architecture.

The ship itself embraces an elegance not seen before on typical fun-loving NCL sailings. Norwegian Prima also delivers lots of outdoor deck space, impressive crew-to-guest ratios for a big ship, upgraded cabins and The Haven, NCL's ship-within-a-ship enclave. All 107 Haven suites provide access to an expanded sun deck, a new infinity pool overlooking the ship's wake and an outdoor spa with a glass-walled sauna and a cold room. You even score a 24-hour butler, as well as access to the exclusive Haven restaurant and private lounge.

When you're ready to leave your cabin cocoon, you can roar around Prima Speedway, the first three-level go-kart track at sea. Zoom down The Drop, the first freefall dry slide at sea, or race your spouse on The Rush, which has 10-story-tall dueling, twisting slides.

Or, beeline it to Ocean Boulevard, an outdoor boardwalk wrapping around the entire ship. There, you'll find Indulge Food Hall , Norwegian's first open-air marketplace, where you can savor Texas barbecue, Thai noodles or Spanish-inspired street food, among numerous other choices. Or, Indulge at Just Ice Cream with over-the-top desserts. Go ahead; you already fit into your wedding attire.

Stroll on to find the Infinity Beach area with two pools, the impressive Concourse sculpture garden and the Oceanwalk glass bridges, where you feel as if you're walking on air over the sea. Fleeing an escape room together in the uber-cool Galaxy Pavilion is a fun way to flex your teamwork muscles. There are lots of virtual reality games there, too.

Paul Gauguin in French Polynesia

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Picture this: white sand beaches, shallow lagoons where multihued fish swim through crystal-clear water, misty mountains and intoxicating breezes scented with tropical flowers.

If this sounds like your ideal "Love Island" (the monogamous version), you should choose French Polynesia for your post-wedding getaway. Besides, all honeymooners deserve a Polynesian blessing ceremony to celebrate the occasion.

Few ships sailing on French Polynesia lure more honeymooners than 330-passenger Paul Gauguin. Now owned by French line Ponant, the luxurious ship (think: South Sea elegance evoked by precious woods, antique engravings and a lagoon-inspired color palate) was renovated in 2021.

Feel the Polynesian atmosphere on board through local art and a virtual museum with more than 150 paintings by the cruise line's namesake, prolific French artist Paul Gauguin, who captured these magical islands in iconic artworks.

No need to rise early for adventure on these voyages — 24-hour room service means dawdling over breakfast, lunch or dinner in bed or on your veranda. (More than 70% of suites and cabins feature private balconies.) Sample cultural cuisine on board — lobster with Tahitian vanilla sauce, anyone? In select cabins and suites, attentive butlers unpack luggage, arrange private cars and make lunch reservations on shore.

Toss to-do lists, and go with the flow. Explore local villages on foot, wander lush rainforests or float as long as you like in blue lagoons. Spend a day on a Paul Gauguin private islet or secluded beach, sipping drinks from coconuts, shaded by palms with baby-soft sand sifting between your toes.

Ready to move? Kayak, snorkel, hit the gym or swim. Dance to live music as stars blanket the sky. Wiggle your hips with Polynesian dancers, and try local crafts. Just when you think the honeymoon can't get any better, a sunset jet boat ride takes it over the top.

Quantum of the Seas in Alaska

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

If you and your shiny new spouse are active types, consider skipping the beach for a bucket-list cruise to Alaska. Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas offers the right mix of thrilling attractions and sophisticated style.

For an adrenaline rush, ride the NorthStar for 360-degree views of Alaska's glaciers and mountainous scenery, or challenge your partner to a race up the ship's rock-climbing wall. You can even learn to fly at the Ripcord by iFLY sky-diving simulator. Bring out your competitive nature at the SeaPlex, where bumper cars, roller skating, basketball and video games await.

When you're ready to relax from the wedding stress, soak your cares away in the adults-only solarium, or cuddle up on the pool deck to watch a movie on the giant LED screen. Or, shake it all off at a rock show in the Music Hall.

Every night is date night on Quantum of the Seas when you reserve a table for two at one of the many specialty restaurants. Do your best "Lady and the Tramp" impersonation at Jamie's Italian by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, experience a whimsical meal made possible by molecular gastronomy at Wonderland or treat yourselves to sushi at Izumi.

Of course, nothing can top the gorgeous backdrop of Alaska itself. For a honeymoon splurge, take a flightseeing tour to the top of a glacier, where you can ride in a dogsled or kayak at the foot of an ice field. Lunch on Alaskan salmon while you toast each other with locally brewed beer. In Victoria, British Columbia, stroll amid brightly colored flower displays at the Butchart Gardens, and ride the carousel as if it's your first date.

Don't forget to take a selfie while watching the sun set as the ship sails away into the Inside Passage. You'll want to savor these moments for years to come.

Disney Wish in the Bahamas

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

For many couples, the idea of honeymooning on Disney Wish with hundreds of children and larger-than-life mice running amok is their worst nightmare. However, for many Disney and Marvel fans, it's a dream come true. Some super fans even choose to get married on board.

The elegant new Disney Cruise Line ship has plenty of spaces where honeymooning couples can get away for grownup entertainment. Take a dip in the infinity pool at the adults-only Quiet Cove sun deck, or find bliss during a couple's massage at the Senses Spa.

You can geek out at the Worlds of Marvel dining experience , or dress up for a gourmet meal at French restaurant Enchante by Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement. After a long morning in bed, an adults-only brunch at Palo will really hit the spot.

For after-hours entertainment, you can bond over your love of "Star Wars" at the Hyperspace Lounge , where you can sip drinks inspired by the moons of Endor or the planet of Coruscant. Or, get a little rowdy at the Keg & Compass Pub over pints of craft beer.

Disney Wish sails three- and four-night cruises to Nassau and Disney's private island of Castaway Cay in the Bahamas. At the latter, you can slip away to Serenity Bay, the adults-only beach where you can sunbathe without getting splashed or sprayed with sand by your young shipmates. In Nassau, try snorkeling or deep-sea fishing.

Or, stay on the ship and enjoy the AquaMouse water ride while all the kids are ashore.

Oceania Riviera in the Mediterranean

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

It's rare that the wedding couple gets to really enjoy food at their own nuptials. However, you can make up for lost time on a food-centric cruise on 1,238-passenger Oceania Riviera. Sail around the romantic Mediterranean; no matter which route you choose, you'll come home with gorgeous photos and amazing stories to tell.

Your lengthy getaway of seven to 15 nights will feature a new port nearly every day, so you might need to skip one or two to ensure proper relaxation time as newlyweds. When you're in port, wander together along the cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia; tour the ancient ruins of Rome; or give your sweetie a smooch as you relax on the idyllic beaches of the French Riviera in St-Tropez.

Back on board, treat yourself to afternoon tea for two, an Oceania Cruises tradition. Feed your sweetie finger sandwiches and petit fours as you sip Earl Grey and soak in the scenery. Sip wine and try to create local dishes at a cooking class at Riviera's Culinary Center, or embrace your creativity with an art class led by the ship's artist-in-residence.

The highlight of your cruise will, no doubt, be dinner. With multiple no-surcharge restaurants on board, you'll enjoy fine cuisine together in a different venue practically every night for a week. Share a steak at the Polo Grill, and indulge in rich French fare at Jacques. Bicker over who gets the last bite of lobster pad Thai at Red Ginger one night, and trade tastes of tiramisu and cannoli at Toscana the next.

If the two of you are true connoisseurs, you might sign up for the extra-fee wine-paired dinners at La Reserve by Wine Spectator or an over-the-top gourmet private dining experience at Privee.

Oceania is known for its ultra-comfortable Tranquility Beds; as honeymooners, you're allowed to spend as much time in them as you please. Splurge on a massive Oceania or Vista Suite to take advantage of expanded balconies with hot tubs and in-suite dining tables when you just want to enjoy a meal in private. Can two people fit in a cruise ship bathtub? There's only one way to find out.

SeaDream I in the French and Italian Rivieras

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

The 112-passenger SeaDream I is as yacht-like as small cruise ships come. Laze with your lover on a top-deck Balinese bed, sipping complimentary Champagne. If the bar doesn't have your preferred beverage, let the crew know; they will procure your desired drink in the next port of call.

You'll take most of your meals outdoors, savoring freshly prepared dishes as the ocean breezes caress your skin. Ditch that pre-wedding diet and dig into filet mignon and lobster, or treat your body right with the line's raw food menu at dinner and healthy organic vegetables at lunch.

The crew will make sure you have all your favorite foods, whether that's spoiling you with caviar or keeping your favorite ship-made chili-chocolate ice cream on hand for whenever you wish to order it.

In the right ports, the crew will open up the ship's water sports marina platform, so the two of you can kayak or paddleboard from the ship or lounge on a floating "island." At night, an outdoor movie might be the perfect opportunity to sneak a kiss in the dark.

Additionally, what could be more romantic than days spent in St.-Tropez, France, or Portofino, Italy? Treat yourself to lunch at a winery, or bike to a Mediterranean beach. We promise you won't need your wedding tux to tour Monte Carlo like James Bond (and you certainly won't need it on board, where the vibe is always casual yet upscale).

Scarlet Lady in the Caribbean

best alaska cruise for honeymoon

Looking for a honeymoon cruise that's a little sexy and a bit naughty? A quickie cruise on Virgin Voyages ' Scarlet Lady to the Caribbean will surely do it for you.

The rebel cruise line likes to do things a little differently. To start, no kids are allowed on board. It's adults-only, and the entertainment reflects the passenger demographic. Deck yourself out in red for Scarlet Night, or score front-row seats to one of the ship's phenomenal shows, such as "Duel Reality," a modern-day version of "Romeo and Juliet" where two rival "gangs" compete against one another in jaw-dropping feats of balance, strength and acrobatics. Bring your sassy selves to a drag show, or brunch at a mostly vegetarian restaurant, where the menu is divided into "nice" and "naughty."

You could even get matching tattoos right on the ship .

Every meal is a date, whether you're tossing back tequila shots over tacos or grilling your own Korean barbecue. Breakfast might be Japanese, lunch a Hawaiian poke bowl and dinner Italian fare. For dessert, no couple should miss the frozen treats at Lick Me Till ... Ice Cream.

For your honeymoon, you'll want to book at least a Sea Terrace with a private balcony, as it comes with a red hammock for those laid-back sea days. If you're feeling flush, treat your VIP selves to Rockstar Quarters, suites that each offer more space, an in-room bar and access to an exclusive sun deck area.

The ship sails short (less than a week) cruises to the Bahamas. On Bimini, Virgin guests have private access to the Bimini Beach Club for all the sunbathing they can fit into a day — no need to worry about tan lines now that wedding photos are done.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.

The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises

Northern lights over Alaska landscape.

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

13 Best Destinations for a Fall Wedding

Anyone who has considered a fall wedding knows the advantages of a fall honeymoon. The fall will lack the summer’s obsessive heat while still offering ideal weather for the beach or for exploring the blazing color changes in the landscape. Fall has countless breathtaking colors! It is nature’s time to shine along with the new couple.

In many cases, the fall also means fewer crowds and fewer expenses. Always a nice advantage for newlyweds. Below are some suggestions for dream fall wedding destinations .

The Green Mountain State of Vermont, located just three hours from Boston, is a prime honeymoon destination for outdoor aficionados and food lovers. The fresh air is perfect for a scenic road trip, and in the fall, the foliage creates an explosion of colors.

Burlington is the largest city in Vermont and conveniently located near fabulous Lake Champlain. Everything changes here in the fall, as your life changed when you were married. Driving along the lake provides stunning vista, especially at sunset. Couples can revel in the fall foliage, go apple picking, visit Ben and Jerry’s, and revel in the outdoors.

The Blind Tiger Hotel is a 19 th century mansion on a tree-lined street in Burlington surrounded by more grand historic homes. Lake Champlain is nearby, as is downtown. It is located in one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods.

Stay in any of the individually decorated 14 guest rooms that blend the Colonial Georgian Revival styles of a long-ago luxury era. The hotel is surrounded by restaurants; it recommends the nearby Daedalus Wine Bar for dinner.

Things to do:

Burlington is a mere half-hour drive from Stowe’s Von Trapp Family Lodge, which in the fall is engulfed in stunning foliage.

As if the Blind Tiger Hotel were not homey enough, a couple can enjoy a drink or coffee at the Wallflower Collective . Not your usual bar, here, guests can sink back into sofas and just make themselves comfortable and hold hands while listening to the music. Forget about bar stools.

Visit the country’s sixth-largest lake, Lake Champlain . The lake is gorgeous and offers plenty of excitement, from cruises to hikes, to golf. Best of all, it is still underdeveloped and lacks the hustle and crowds of many tourist destinations.

Mexico City, Mexico

In the fall, the colors in Mexico City explode into vibrant colors, especially the city’s famed Cempasúchil flowers. This time of year provides the best opportunity to explore Mexico City’s culture, such as the popular albeit spooky Day of the Dead. Couples can celebrate Independence Day, “Viva Mexico.”

The Four Seasons Mexico City is a hacienda-style structure built around a romantic inner courtyard. Once inside, the bustle of the city is left outside. Guests have a choice of 11 suites or rooms.

The hotel specializes in top-rated Mexican cuisine served both indoors and outdoors, and honeymooners may wish to sign up for the Bed and Breakfast package, which includes in-room breakfast each day.

The Fifty Mils Bar and its unique cocktails are one of the best in Mexico City. The rooftop pool is a delight, made even more so when receiving a half-hour body massage.

Chapultepec Park is at its best in the fall with its gardens and museums. The park makes for a great stroll.

One of Mexico City’s greatest fall festivals is its Day of the Dead . It may sound ghoulish, but it is a joyful honoring of lost loved ones with parades, food, shows, dancing, and special events.

Munich, Germany

The weather in Munich begins to acquire a chill by November, but fall is a great time for a visit. Here everything is about “gemütlichkeit,” or comfortableness. Munich is a cozy place that has much to offer newlyweds.

The Bayerischerhof is in the downtown district. It has five restaurants, including the 2-Michelin star Atelier. Each of the rooms and suites is individually decorated. For something special, the 8 th -floor Penthouse Garden Suite is surrounded by its own terrace and a stunning view.

The Blue Spa has a pool, steam room, sauna, and spa treatments.

The Roof Garden Lounge starts the day off right with a breakfast champagne buffet. There is plenty to keep guests entertained, such as the private theater, comedy show, a nightclub, and a relaxed piano bar.

Munich has lovely gardens that become a fantasy in the fall. This includes the Hirschgarten, Luitpoldpark, and Nymphenburg Park. Just hold hands and stroll.

The Octoberfest is the major draw in September and October, of course. Two weeks of the world’s best beer, rides, great food, and plenty of oom-pah.

An ideal day trip to the Alps is a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle . This castle can be compared with the magnificent Paris Versailles, but they served different purposes. Louis XIV built Versailles to show off; King Ludwig II created Neuschwanstein as a personal fairy tale hideaway. Here, the reclusive king retreated into his own world, which is the most visited palace in the world. The only way to get inside is by taking a tour of the 200 rooms, including the incomparable throne room, where lonely Ludwig probably spent much time by himself.

Great Smoky Mountains

Hiking through the Great Smokies is like hiking through a fall foliage paradise as the temperature is still extremely comfortable. This enchantment consists of half a million acres stretching through eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina and is a mecca for fall foliage. Visitors from around the world come here for the vibrant shades of red and orange. The change in nature’s colors begins in mid-September and continues through the beginning of November. There are many available accommodations, including camping, but the most popular and convenient city is probably Gatlinburg.

Margaritaville Resort Gatlinburg , surrounded by scenic mountains, is the perfect destination for hiking through the fall foliage. It is steps away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, shops, and restaurants. Upscale dining and delicious hamburgers are available.

All the rooms and suites are comfortably decorated. For a retreat within this mountain retreat, there is Jimmy’s Hideaway, a hidden bungalow on a private island just steps from the main resort. Guests can enjoy a fire pit and patio, a fireplace, and a Jacuzzi tub. What happens at Jimmy’s stays at Jimm’s.

Gatlinburg in the fall is Nirvana for foodies. During Gatlinburger Week in September, all restaurants compete for the best burger. Visitors get to taste and judge the winning burger. winning

The Gatlinburg Chili Cookoff happens during the first week in November. This start to the holiday season includes live entertainment and a huge array of chili prepared during the official cookoff.

Gatlinburg’s Craftmen’s Fair is an exhibition of local crafts that make treasured holiday gifts.

Mount Cammerer, with an elevation of almost 5,000 feet, does not experience peak foliage until late October.

Couples can snuggle on the Gatlinburg SkyLift which ascends from downtown to the peak of Crockett Mountain. After snuggling, hold on to each other while crossing (carefully) the country’s longest suspension bridge.

San Diego, California

The summer heat is abetting by fall, and there are more festivals and parades than can be listed. The water is still warm, the sun still shines brightly, and it’s a great time to be in Southern California’s loveliest city. The crowds have diminished by October, making most things more affordable.

Bahia Hotel is tucked into Mission Bay with lush gardens and endless clear sandy beaches. Rooms and suites come with a garden or Bay view. Most have a balcony or patio.

Couples can snuggle on the beach nightly next to the beach bonfires. The resort’s Bahia Bells provides catamaran excursions for its guests, or they can relax within their private cabana by the pool and whirlpool. The Bay is a great place for boating and kayaking.

Tennis and pickleball clinics are available.

San Diego is unusual in that all of its important museums are located in one place – Balboa Park . Stroll through the fall foliage and see some amazing gardens and museums. An hour-and-a-half private tour will introduce you to the paths and incredible architecture of Balboa Park.

The San Diego Zoo is one of the country’s largest zoos. See your favorite animal (not your spouse) while enjoying some fine dining.

San Diego’s MurderNMayhem provides tours through the city’s Gaslight District and discusses some of the more unsavory aspects of this sunshine city.

Turin, Italy

October is wine season in Turin, and it’s a great place for wine-loving couples. The temperature is in the moderate mid-60s, perfect for exploring the city and the vineyards in the Langhe and Piedmont regions located near the Piedmont Alps. As a delicious aside, it is also the chocolate capital of Italy.

Barolo Wine and Food Tasting will include some of Italy’s best reds. Visitors will receive a tour of the vineyard and taste-test dozens of different wines along with meats and cheese. A private Langhe Wine Tour will arrange for a Turin pickup and travel to the Piedmont region, where guests will visit two vineyards and enjoy taste samples and lunch.

The Principi-di-Piemonte is Turin’s five-star hotel in the city’s best location. Everything about the palace whispers about an era when splendor was appreciated and this was the architectural icon of the time.

The rooms are all above the eighth floor and offer a striking view. Meals concentrate on sophisticated Italian cuisine.

The spa has a genuine Turkish bath and a Finnish sauna and provides soothing massages.

Who can resist a two-hour chocolate tour ? Take a walking tour through the Capital of Chocolate and devour chocolate in every form available.

Turin as a secret and dark life underground . This tour will explore the underground tunnels for three hours and learn about Turin’s darker history, including a recently discovered underground prison.

Just outside of the city, the Royal Palace of Venaria is one of the most spectacular European palaces with its 17 th century Baroque architecture, spectacular gardens, and magnificent collection of art. The garden is its most beautiful during October.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

With the temperature hovering in the 70s, fall is the optimal time for an outdoorsy Jackson Hole honeymoon. Situated by Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, it is at the center of peak foliage. Nature’s own beauty can be unbelievable at times, and it is not just about the outdoors. The town has a surprising number of museums and is known for its delicious food.

Amangani Resort, located at the bottom of the Tetons by the Snake River Valley, is an Old West remnant. Suites and rooms face the majestic Tetons. Each room comes with non-alcoholic beverages, wellness class, coffee, and pastries.

Few resorts come with true adventure anymore. Ideal for wildlife enthusiasts, Amangani offers a wildlife package with a minimum three-night stay which includes a four-hour dusk or dawn wildlife tour in a BMW with a complimentary breakfast.

The spa, in anticipation of a certain amount of hiking, offers foot scrubs along with their massages.

The Wyoming Balloon Company soars over the Tetons for a spectacular view of the mountains while guests breeze in the fresh air and maybe wave at a bald eagle flying next to them.

Have a date at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar , a Jackson Hole institution visited by celebrities who enjoy a great steak. Entertainment draws top names such Tanya Tucker, the James Cotton Blues Band, Carly Pearce, and others.

Visit Colter Bay Village for the best access to Jackson Lake, boat rentals, and fishing equipment.

Toronto, Canada

Fall in Toronto means enjoying the stunning landscape and skyline, where visitors can revel in the array of colors, apple, and pumpkin picking, and even catch some salmon migration at the Humber Bay Shores by Lake Ontario.

Even better, it’s easy to take a daytrip to the ultimate honeymoon destination – Niagara Falls.

The Hazelton Hotel is the only Forbes Five Star hotel in Toronto, as well as the number one hotel in Canada and number 21 in the world. The rooms and suites are reminiscent of 1940s glamor.

The One Restaurant serves up memories on its candlelit patio. The One Lounge is a chic place to sit back and enjoy a nightcap. The lounge has access to all the restaurant’s dinners, as well.

The spa stands out not just because of its treatments and steam room, but because of its indoor saltwater pool.

The hotel offers tours within the Yorkville neighborhood such as local galleries, candle-making classes, and even a style conference for anyone wanting to up their honeymoon looks.

There is trusting your partner, and then there is trusting. Visiting Toronto’s famed CN Tower is for those yearning to touch the sky on the 116 th floor EdgeWalk without touching their partner. Maneuvering that edge may give new meaning to couples walking on clouds….

Gothic Revival-style Casa Loma was once Canada’s largest private house with 98 rooms and a working shower – unheard of at the time. Now, it is a museum and a frequent location for filming the latest movies and television shows. Visitors can stroll through the impressive rooms, including the library with its 10,000 books, and then take a staircase to the towers for a splendid view of Toronto.

Equally worth seeing are the gardens, especially in the fall. A tunnel beneath the house provides evidence of Toronto’s dark times, such as the Great Fire, the Depression, and the plague. The carriage room holds several authentic early 19 th -century antique cars.

For film enthusiasts, there is a movie gallery with posters and behind-the-scenes pictures of movies shot here.

Paris, France

Truthfully, there is no bad time to honeymoon in Paris. The magical City of Lights embraces its visitors every day of the year. However, in the fall, the days get cooler, and the parks take on greater colors than some of the famed museums. In addition, the summer crowd has dispersed, making it much easier to visit icons such as the Eifel Tower and the Louvre. Welcome to your fall Paris honeymoon.

Le Pavillon de la Reine and Spa is located in the fashionable La Marais district. All the rooms are large and inviting, and the Queen’s Suite has a chandelier, a marble bathroom, and a fireplace, and it very much resembles an elegant 17 th century Parisian flat.

The lounges come with a cozy fireplace, and the Restaurant Anne has been awarded a Michelin star for its exceptional French cuisine.

Concierge Clefs d’or services are available to all guests as an insurance that every wish is fulfilled, whether it is a restaurant reservation or tickets to the opera. Guests only need to ask.

There are many Seine tours, but none get any better than an evening cruise with music . Let the City of Lights guide on this hour-long tour with music, snacks, and champagne.

When the Louvre and d’Orsay get too crowded, the Sculpture Garden at Musee Rodin is a hidden treasure filled with beauty. Enjoy the sculpture and the fall blooms.

The Deux Margots has drawn a literary breakfast crowd for almost 150 years. This is where Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and many others came to discuss the future of thought and literature. It still serves one of the most popular breakfasts in Paris and still attracts a literary crowd.

Alaska Cruise

Alaskan cruises are wonderful, and they are usually associated with winter. However, that may not be the optimal season.

Cruise prices are much lower during the shoulder season – possibly discounted as much as 50 to 75 percent. The fall is the season for fabulous deals, and after an expensive wedding, those savings feel good. The lines are shorter, no waiting for food or drinks, and there is a greater choice of shore excursions.

Another reason to take a fall Alaskan cruise is to get the full benefit of the foliage in Juneau and the nearby Tongass National Forest, which is a popular stop. Taking a foliage hike is a must on a port call in Juneau. Some cruise ships also stop at Denali National Park.

Seeing the northern lights is a huge part of visiting Alaska, and the time for them starts around September when the nights are darkest.

Wildlife is at its most abundant in the fall. The bears are outstuffing themselves with salmon before winter hibernation. Humpback whales may be seen heading toward warmer climates, while the sea lions and otters stay in Alaska to be viewed, as can moose and caribou. Fall is an excellent season for wildlife.

Most rooms on a cruise ship face the ocean, and many have a private verandah.

Activities will vary, but most cruises will include glaciers, Alaskan helicopter tours, wildlife excursions, a scenic railroad ride, dog sledding, and fishing.

Fall is the off-peak season in Curacao and an excellent time for a Caribbean honeymoon with some of the best beaches in the world. Combine those with excellent weather, and you have the honeymoon of a lifetime.

All-inclusive Sandals Royal Curacao is located within the Leeward Antilles and is one of nature’s natural romantic settings. The water here invites guests to snorkel and dive while the mountains hover in the background.

The beachfront Butler Bungalows with their private pool are unrivaled as a honeymoon getaway, except for perhaps the bungalows lining a semi-private pool. Guests are pampered by 24-hour butler attention.

All restaurants are all-inclusive, as are the three food trucks on the property. For guests staying a minimum of a week, Sandals Curacao offers a $250 dining certificate to a local restaurant.

As on any Sandals property, activities are close to endless. Sandals offers certified PADI scuba training. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling are always available. Whether lounging by the beach or the pool, cabanas are available, along with the services of a private cabana butler.

Evenings are filled with exciting beach or pool parties, live shows, and karaoke. During the day, couples can engage in tennis, croquet, volleyball, cricket, and lawn chess.

A 2-hour day trip to the uninhabited Klein Curacao is a must for couples. The beaches and snorkeling are the absolute tops, and the small island is a delight to explore.

Couples should visit Curacao’s capital, Willemstad , and stroll across the marvelous floating Queen Emma Bridge. Then, check out Willemstad’s colorful buildings that give a new meaning to picture postcards.

Willemstad has floating Venezuelan markets selling their ware by the shore. On the streets, kiosks sell clothing, jewelry, and all types of souvenirs. Definitely worth investigating.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Scenic Ocho Rios began as a fishing village. Surrounded by grand waterfalls, beaches, and a jungle, it has turned into a major Jamaican honeymoon destination with luxury resorts and reggae music. There is a lot of cultural history in Bob Marley’s birthplace.

The all-inclusive Sandals Ochi Rios is a private Garden of Eden with great golf and vibrant nightlife, and the Travvy winner of the 2018 Best Destination Wedding Resort in the Caribbean.

Many rooms and villas come with a pool and hot tub as well as 24-hour butler service for perfect honeymoon coziness, as do the 16 all-inclusive restaurants. Green fees at the Upton Estate Golf and Country Club are included.

Sandals Ochi has PADI-certified diving and unlimited watersports. The resort provides nightly parties, live shows, fire dances, karaoke, and more.

This is where to find the Margaritaville that Jimmy Buffet sang about. It is an amazing place to dine and party.

James Bond fans will want to spend time at James Bond Beach. It was named for 007 after it was featured in the movie, “Dr. No.” This is something all couples can say yes to.

Madrid, Spain

Madrid’s fall temperatures hover around 70 degrees, perfect for couples anxious to explore this beautiful city filled with parks. The capital of Spain is a lively destination that will pique all interests.

From watching (or participating in) a striking flamenco show to dining at the world’s oldest restaurant, or to enjoying the many museums that showcase outstanding artists such as Picasso and Dali, Madrid will delight everyone.

Gran Melia is an art-laden 19 th century palace that treats its guests like royalty. Guests even receive access to an Audi to explore the city. The Gran Melia has the longest infinity pool in Europe, and accommodations and cuisine invariably exceed expectations. The hotel garden provides a tranquil retreat in a busy city.

Guests opting for Red Level receive extra attention and access to spaces and services not available to other guests.

Retiro Park served as a retreat for the royal family. These days, anyone can stroll through and enjoy the flower-filled gardens and statues.

The Crystal Palace is made from glass and has an impressive art collection. It is surrounded by a lovely lake.

The Teatro Real has been a stunning house for opera and ballet since 1850. It seats 1,800 people and enthralls its audiences with its orchestra and resident choir. The foyer’s chandeliers hold a remnant of old, Spanish glamor. The Botin Restaurant was established in 1725 and is considered the world’s oldest restaurant, especially famous for its suckling pigs and lamb dishes.
