Interviews with rock legends since 1982

ronnie james dio sacred heart tour

10 minutes on the phone with Ronnie James Dio during the Sacred Heart Tour of 1985

By steve newton.

Last night on Crave I watched the Ronnie James Dio documentary Dio: Dreamers Never Die , which I thought did a fine job of detailing the heavy-metal singer’s career in music.

I especially enjoyed hearing the commentary from metal musicians like Deep Purple’s Roger Glover , Quiet Riot’s Rudy Sarzo , Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, and Dio’s old bandmate in Black Sabbath / Heaven and Hell , Tony Iommi.

But I was really surprised when the two-hour film was over and the credits were rolling and I saw my own name on the list of people the filmmakers wished to thank.

Although I had interviewed Ronnie James Dio on the phone back in 1985, I hadn’t heard any of the audio from that conversation used in the documentary, so I wasn’t sure what I was being thanked for.

But hey–I’ll take it. Especially since my name appeared directly above that of legendary Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice !

I haven’t gotten that close to Paicey since he signed my copy of Made in Japan backstage in Vancouver 20 years ago.

So in recognition of getting my name in the credits of a Ronnie James Freakin’ Dio doc, here’s the first half of my phone conversation with him from ’85, when he called from his home in L.A. during a break in the Sacred Heart Tour.

Dio – Finding the Sacred Heart Captures the Band on the Classic 1986 Tour!

ronnie james dio sacred heart tour

By Taylor T Carlson

ronnie james dio sacred heart tour

1986 saw Ronnie James Dio embarking on the tour for the third Dio album, Sacred Heart. Guitarist Vivian Campbell had left the band, and was promptly replaced by former Giuffria guitarist Craig Goldy. What followed is what may have been the Dio band’s most iconic tour and stage show.

For this tour, the band and the production crew went all out. With a setlist of old and new tracks alike, the group embarked upon a show sure to leave an impact on anyone in attendance. In addition to the crowd getting their share of music, they were treated to an absolute spectacle of a stage show, complete with medieval castle, drawbridge, knights, laser effects, and even a fire-breathing dragon! For fans, THIS was the Dio show to see.

There had been prior home video releases of the Sacred Heart tour show, but those were generally edited and incomplete shows with questionable audio and video quality. This is an attempt by Eagle Rock to release a complete performance of a tour from the show, with a restored setlist, and audio and video quality.

For this particular gig, Ronnie James Dio was absolutely at the top of his game, in the wake of the release of the Sacred Heart record. This was the third Dio solo album, so by this point the group, comprised of Ronnie James Dio, Craig Goldy, Jimmy Bain, Claude Schnell, and Vinny Appice, had no shortage of material that they could choose from. Of course, material from these three albums was combined with earlier Ronnie James Dio songs from Rainbow and Black Sabbath, further diversifying things and keeping it all interesting.

There are countless Dio concerts on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, so it can be a bit daunting to decide which one or ones to purchase. Finding the Sacred Heart is definitely at the top of this list, however. The video quality is not the greatest (likely due to the age and nature of the source material) but the superb audio and the production quality of everything that went on upon the stage makes this a Ronnie James Dio show for the ages, and a fitting tribute to the fallen rocker.

The visual allure of the stage show is one thing, but the band definitely rocks on this one. You will not find any live Dio home video release more epic than this one. The group is absolutely at the top of their game; though new to the band at the time Craig Goldy plays these songs like he has been a member of the band for years. Claude Schnell, one of the most criminally underrated keyboard players in the business, even gets a chance to solo, making sounds with a keyboard no one else can. But the real highlight is Vinny Appice’s drum solo in the dark, with lightsaber-style drumsticks! If you are not watching the band, you will be watching something on the stage for sure. This is an epic show from a musical and a theatrical standpoint alike.

Video quality is not the best and does look murky in a number of places, but it is still a step up from standard definition releases. Audio satisfies, which is a must for Dio on Blu-ray. A number of bonus features are included on the disc, including vintage and contemporary interviews, and hilarious backstage footage with the band and crew. The original “Rock and Roll Children” music video is included as well, making this set of bonuses ideal for fans who purchase the disc.

Dio has countless video releases out there, but this Eagle Rock Blu-ray Disc might be the best one of the bunch. No fan of vintage Dio music will want to be without this epic, classic concert in their collection.

When Dio Started to Show Cracks With ‘Sacred Heart’

When Ronnie James Dio unveiled his group’s third album, Sacred Heart , in Aug. 15, 1985, it was almost exactly 10 years to the day since the singer’s first taste of stardom as the frontman of Ritchie Blackmore ’s Rainbow . And nearly five years had passed since his second as the de facto catalyst behind Black Sabbath ’s unlikely return to greatness.

Then came Dio ’s solo escape on the back of a pair of critically acclaimed LPs in 1983’s Holy Diver and ’84’s The Last in Line . They confirmed the singer’s standing among heavy metal’s ‘80s elite, complete with gold albums, magazine reader poll wins, and numerous other accolades for the 43-year old Dio, who, needless to say, was a on a roll.

He would reach top speed, in many respects, on Sacred Heart , which took the successful formula of recent years -- best exemplified by the rip-roaring speedster, “King of Rock and Roll” and the majestic title track -- and then boosted it with radio-friendly hooks and melodies as yet unheard on earlier efforts, making true hit singles of tunes like “Rock 'n' Roll Children” and “Hungry for Heaven.”

And while remaining album cuts like “Another Lie,” “Just Another Day” and “Shoot, Shoot” clearly lacked the oomph to become future concert staples, they were nonetheless buoyed by Dio’s returning, winning team consisting of guitarist Vivian Campbell , bassist Jimmy Bain, drummer Vinny Appice and keyboardist Claude Schnell.

They would set out almost immediately on a marathon worldwide tour lasting 13 months and playing over 100 shows, supported by openers like Rough Cutt, Yngwie Malmsteen , Keel, Accept . They amazed fans with an arena-sized extravaganza that is still legendary for Dio’s nightly jousts with a special effects dragon, lovingly nicknamed Denzel.

Amid all this, Dio, Campbell and Bain would spearhead the historic Hear ’n Aid charity project. This drew celebrities from every corner of the heavy metal firmament to participate in an album and single around their song "Stars," and adding yet another feather to Ronnie’s bonnet.

And yet, almost like a reflection of Dio’s fantasy/adventure lyrics, real danger lay just beneath the surface of Sacred Heart ’s facade — beginning with Vivian Campbell’s surprise firing halfway through the tour, when he was replaced by Craig Goldy. Over the years, Ronnie frequently blamed the dismissal on a lack of commitment on Vivian’s part, while the guitarist countered by voicing discontent with the band’s business arrangements (many of them overseen by Dio’s wife and manager Wendy). Bain would later say that Dio made a huge mistake by firing Campbell.

But whatever the real reason, Dio’s magic chemistry certainly appeared to be disrupted after Campbell’s departure -- but not before the original band had delivered two of the ‘80s best heavy metal albums and shared their Sacred Heart with many fans on their third release.

Dio’s 'Sacred Heart' Turns 30: Rock With 30 Album Facts

Dio released Sacred Heart on August 15, 1985, thereby extending a run of classic LPs after Holy Diver (1983) and The Last in Line (1984) by the band’s legendary core lineup of Vivian Campbell on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass, and Vinny Appice on drums.

Vocals, of course, came courtesy of louder-than-life frontman Ronnie James Dio .

Sacred Heart proved to be yet another highlight in a remarkable year for hard rock that also included hair metal hits on the radio, thrash erupting up from the underground, and even metal feeding the world via the mammoth charity concert, Live Aid.

In honor of Sacred Heart ’s 30th anniversary, here are 30 facts about the album. Raise your horns and bang your head accordingly.

1. Sacred Heart peaked at #29 on the U.S. Billboard album chart. It topped out at #35 in Canada, #12 in Germany, and #4 in both the UK and Sweden.

2. Sales-wise, Sacred Heart matched Dio’s previous disc, The Last in Line , achieving gold status. Holy Diver hit platinum, but only after six years in release.

3. Also in keeping with The Last in Line , Claude Schnell plays keyboards on Sacred Heart . Later in 1985, Schnell performed on the Y&T album, Down for the Count .

4. Ronnie James Dio produced Sacred Heart , as he had the band’s first two long-players.

5. Sacred Heart is the final Dio album to feature ace guitarist Vivian Campbell.

6. Ronnie fired Campbell from the band midway through the Sacred Heart tour. The guitarist had outspokenly taken issue with Ronnie’s need for total control of the band. Finances, it’s been said, also played a part in the bad blood that preceded the rupture.

7. After initially storming hard rock by way of New Wave of British Heavy Metal heroes Sweet Savage, Campbell followed his unhappy split from Dio by working with Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy and other powerhouses. In 2002, Viv became a full-time member of Def Leppard.

8. The anger between Campbell and Ronnie James Dio remained unresolved even at the end of the singer’s life in 2010. Not long before he crossed over, Dio addressed the grievance directly. “[Vivian] was — and remains — an excellent guitarist,” Dio said. “I never lost sight of how good he was as a musician, but as a person… Well, he was no longer on the same page as the rest of us. That annoyed me hugely. When you've got four people really stretching and straining to do their very best, and one person who's clearly holding back, it makes for an unhappy camp. A lot of negative things have been said since by both Vivian and me. Now, I regret some of those things. I'm sure he does, too.”

9. In hindsight, bass player Jimmy Bain said : “Firing Viv was the biggest mistake of Ronnie’s career.”

10. In 2012, Vivian Campbell launched Last in Line , a band consisting of Dio’s original lineup with Andrew Freeman, vocalist for Lynch Mob and Hurricane, handling frontman duties. Respectfully, Campbell noted that he would not have seen the project through to fruition if Ronnie were still alive.

11. At present in 2015, Viv Campbell has repeatedly kicked the ass of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is out on the road with Def Leppard.

12. Sacred Heart ’s cover imagery depicts the reflection of a dragon gazing into a crystal ball it holds in its claws. Renowned artist and musician Robert Florczak painted the piece.

13. Among Florczak’s other notable works include various well-known children’s literature covers, the poster for the crackpot Canuck kids’ flick The Peanut Butter Solution ; and the soundtrack to the insane, recently re-released animals amok movie, Roar (1981).

14. The dragon, originally referred to as Dean, eventually came to be known as Denzil.

15. Denzil the dragon featured prominently in Dio’s massively theatrical stage show on the Sacred Heart tour. Throughout the performance, the band played on a medieval castle set, and Ronnie ultimately battled the gigantic, mechanized, laser-shooting beast with a broadsword.

16. The Sacred Heart roadshow reportedly cost $250,000 to mount—and that’s in 1985 dollars.

17. Sacred Heart: The Video , filmed at The Spectrum in Philadelphia, amazingly captures the elaborate live spectacle. It became a VHS hit in 1986.

18. In 2004, the concert video was reissued as Sacred Heart: The DVD .

19. Although now overwhelmingly revered as a fan favorite, Sacred Heart initially divided the Dio audience. Detractors kicked up a bit of a fuss decrying the record’s hook-heavy songwriting and polished production as being too blatantly commercial.

20. Among those artistically disappointed by Sacred Heart was bassist Jimmy Bain. "Dio should have gotten better with each album, but what happened was the opposite," Jimmy said. “The production was watered down with all the keyboards, [and] the songs were not as good because it became harder to satisfy Ronnie’s need to complicate arrangement and structure.”

21. The fairy-tale-like “Rock and Roll Children” was Sacred Heart ’s lead-off single. Ronnie plays a wizard in the music video encountered by a couple of adventurous, punky-looking kids in an antique shop called Curios.

22. Sacred Heart’s second single, “Hungry for Heaven,” became a rock radio staple. It also hit #30 on the Billboard Album Tracks chart.

23. The main riff of “Hungry for Heaven” sounds remarkably like “Baba O’Riley” by the Who.

24. Oddly, Vertigo Records issued multiple versions of the “Hungry for Heaven” single.

25. The B-side of the most common, internationally released “Hungry for Heaven” single featured live cuts of the instant Dio classics “Holy Diver” and “The Last in Line.” In England, the B-side contained the Sacred Heart song “King of Rock and Roll” and a live version of “Like the Beat of a Heart.” Still another variation reached Australia, with “The Last in Line” as its B-side.

26. “Hungry for Heaven” also turns up in the terrific 1985 teen sports movie, Vision Quest . The film’s tie-in LP provides an amazing snapshot of commercial rock and pop in the mid-’80s.

27. With Dio bringing the metal, the Vision Quest soundtrack also features electrifyingly of-their moment songs such as “Lunatic Fringe” by Red Rider, “Only the Young” by Journey, “Change” by John Waite, “I’ll Fall in Love Again” by Sammy Hagar, and two numbers “Crazy for You” and “Gambler,” by Madonna, who appears as bar singer in the movie.

28. “King of Rock and Roll” came out as a single exclusively in Spain.

29. Sacred Heart was the last Dio album to achieve sales above 500,000 until the 2009 compilation, The Very Beast of Dio .

30. The Latin words surrounding Sacred Heart ’s cover imagery read, “Finis per somnium reperio tibi sacra cor veneficus aurum.” In English, that means , “Come the end by sleep; I will prepare for you the Sacred Heart which is the magic that opens upon the altar.” That’s cool.

Ronnie James Dio Hologram Plots World Tour

After debuting at last year’s Wacken festival in Germany, a hologram of late heavy-metal singer Ronnie James Dio will set out on a world tour, backed by musicians who played with him, this fall. The trek, dubbed “ Dio Returns,” will kick off with a European leg of performances in theaters on November 30th in Helsinki before hitting South America, Australia and Asia. The tour will arrive in the U.S. in the spring of 2018 and hit select festivals next summer. T

“In 1986, for the Sacred Heart Tour, Ronnie and I created the Crystal Ball with Ronnie filmed and speaking in a suspended crystal ball effect, done with back projection, which was the closest we could get to a hologram,” the singer’s widow, Wendy Dio, tells Rolling Stone . “Ronnie was always wanting to experiment with new stage ideas and was a big Disney fan. With this said, I am sure he is giving us his blessing with this hologram project. It gives the fans that saw Ronnie perform an opportunity to see him again and new fans that never got to see him a chance to see him for the first time. We hope everyone will enjoy the show that we have all worked so hard to put together.”

The Dio estate has worked with hologram company Eyellusion so the singing specter could perform many of the late vocalist’s hits, including “Holy Diver,” “Rainbow in the Dark,” “We Rock,” “King of Rock and Roll,” Black Sabbath’s “Neon Knights” and “Heaven and Hell” and Rainbow’s “Man on the Silver Mountain,” among others. The production uses audio of Dio’s live performances from throughout his career with a live band backing him up in front of a stage set that hearkens back to the singer’s Sacred Heart and Dream Evil tours. The hologram’s set will differ from night to night, and audiences should expect to see the Dio Band also perform with vocalists Tim “Ripper” Owens and Oni Logan on select dates.

The Dio Band consists of guitarist Craig Goldy, drummer Simon Wright, keyboardist Scott Warren and bassist Bjorn Englen. The musicians have previously made appearances as the Dio Disciples.

Goldy tells Rolling Stone the band had always hoped to tour and that he and his bandmates are looking to book between 80 and 100 concerts with the hologram. After showcasing at both Pollstar Live!, put on by a U.S. concert-industry trade magazine, and the International Live Music Conference in London, he says the band received multiple offers to perform.

The response Goldy has gotten to the hologram performances has been mixed. “Ronnie was and still is so revered by his fans, which really are his extended family, and they, too, had a special relationship with the man himself which entitles them to a voice,” he says. “Like all families, not everyone agrees, but this was a gift to the fans that was created in the very same spirit in which Ronnie gave throughout his whole career and created these amazing stage shows that rivaled Madonna and Michael Jackson.”

“For those that were in the room at the Pollstar touring industry event and able to experience this live, the reactions were overwhelmingly positive,” Eyellusion CEO Jeff Pezzuti says. “Ronnie was a major touring force for decades and that support lives on today as venues and promoters around the world continue to book this show. We are thrilled about the excitement and anticipation for this tour and are hard at work on making it something fans will remember for a long time.”

Eyellusion is also working on securing the rights to bring additional holographic artists to the stage for tours, though reps for the company have yet to reveal future names. The company is currently raising funding to secure additional artist rights and finance other tours.

When we perform on this tour, for me, it is a memorial service in the form of a rock concert. … This gives [fans] a chance to experience [Dio live] without relying on the poor-quality videos on YouTube.”
