Supporting Massive Attack at the very special concert are Killer Mike, Lankum, Sam Morton and DJ Milo.
Tickets for the show, which organisers say will "trial new standards for the decarbonisation of live music", are on sale now.
"The event will mark the culmination of 25 years of climate activism on the part of the band, and a first physical fruition of their collaboration with climate scientists and analysts," said organisers.

The Ritual Spirit EP released in 2016 marked the return of Tricky to Massive Attack for the first time since 1994's Protection .

Massive Attack to stage greenest ever gig in bid to change the music industry
Massive Attack , the trailblazing act who helped shape Britain’s trip-hop scene in the Nineties, will this weekend attempt to set a new standard for the music industry while addressing its dismal record on climate action .
Act 1.5 – named after the UN climate treaty that called on countries to keep global heating to a 1.5C threshold – was conceived by the band in 2018 and will take place on Sunday 25 August in their hometown of Bristol.
It is being hailed as the lowest carbon/greenhouse gas emissions show of its scale ever staged, and is 100 per cent powered by renewable energy.
Thirty-thousand fans are set to attend, with additional performances to take place from US rapper Killer Mike, the Mercury Prize-shortlisted Irish folk group Lankum, and Oscar-nominated actor/musician Samantha Morton.
“Some people think the whole point of our sector is to tell people about [the climate crisis] as if it’s not one of the most widely reported issues globally of our time,” frontman Robert Del Naja told The Guardian.
“We don’t need to talk about it – we need to act on it.”
While the band say that no one will be able to tell the difference between their event and a typical music festival, attendees might spot a few noticeable features.
All of the food will be vegan and served with compostable cutlery (the toilets are also compostable), while there is a reusable cup system in place on all bars – guests are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers.
Instead of diesel generators, the stage and stalls will be hooked up to electric vans containing large batteries.
There is no car park: guests are encouraged to walk, cycle or take public transport, such as one of the five special trains organised to take people back across the south-west of England on Sunday night. The support acts have also been encouraged to travel by rail.
Steve Meersman, the founding director of Zenobe Energy, which has partnered with Massive Attack to provide second-life battery units and fully electric buses for the event, said the UK festival community alone uses in excess of 12 million litres of diesel each year.
“This live music event will set a precedent for more carbon-free shows to take place in the years ahead,” he said.
Massive Attack have also pared back their own tour operation, going from six trucks to two and travelling by train as much as they can across Europe for their ongoing tour.
“We’re very aware of the polluting we’ve done, which is why we’re doing this,” Del Naja told the BBC .
Asked why they felt so strongly, his bandmate Grant Marshall, aka Daddy G, said the answer was simple: “It’s because there’s only one planet, and we’ve got to try and save it.
“Everyone knows what’s going on, and if we can do our bit to try and save something for the future, then it seems like a no-brainer.”
Mark Donne, the festival’s lead producer, said the response from ticket-holders to their experiment had been “incredible”.
“If you’re listening to the science and you’d like us all to avoid catastrophe, there’s no meaningful alternative to immediately and consistently reducing GHG emissions – from stage to field; we can all do that right now,” he said.
“This August we’ll show that major live music shows can be done differently, collectively, and dynamically.”
Some of Massive Attack’s peers have been taking their own steps to reduce the environmental impact of their tours. In June, Coldplay announced that a new 12-point sustainability plan had led to a 59 per cent reduction in carbon emissions compared to their previous tour.
For Billie Eilish’s 2022 residency at the O2 Arena in London, she requested that only vegan food be served. The US star has partnered again with Reverb for her upcoming Hit Me Hard and Soft tour, including a reduction of single-use plastics, plant-based food options and a donation of profits to the funding of climate projects.
Other stars have come under scrutiny for the environmental impact of their globe-spanning tours.
Days before Massive Attack’s show on Bristol’s Clifton Downs, pop titan Taylor Swift concluded her string of eight shows at London’s Wembley Stadium, and will soon launch the final US and Canada run of her record-breaking Eras Tour.
The “Fortnight” singer has become a major target for climate activists , following a report in The Tennessean that her two jets travelled up to 178,000 miles – emitting 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide – in 2023.
Massive Attack plan on compiling more research after their festival concludes to learn what worked and what didn’t, which Del Naja said he hopes will be “transformational” for the music industry.
“Other industries have got clearer plans and central targets, so you can see progress being made,” he said. “Whereas, I think with lots of individual [music] events and acts, it’s been slower for all this to come together and be co-ordinated.
“So the more that we can see all the pieces of the puzzle in place, and what that looks like, it really does help show other events what’s possible - without necessarily assuming that everyone can do all of it straight away.
“Someone needs to go first in putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together.”

LIVE: Torrential rain as Massive Attack play first hometown gig in five years
The event is expected to be the first-of-its-kind with a strong focus on climate action
- Updated 21:59, 25 AUG 2024
World-famous Bristol band Massive Attack are set to perform at The Downs later today (August 25). It's their first hometown show for five years, since they played a sell-out show at Steel Yard, a purpose-built arena in Filton.
Gates for today's show open at 2pm, with last entry at 6pm and things set to finish at around 10.15pm. Tickets are still available at the time of writing on AEG and See, with general admission costing £79.39 per person.
The event is expected to be pioneering in how music gigs and festivals are operated. Massive Attack have engaged with climate activism over the past 25 years and this weekend's performance aims to be the lowest carbon gig of its size ever held.
Massive Attack fans brave the massive downpour
Fans brave torrential rain
Just as Massive Attack took to the stage at 8.25pm, in front of 30,000 fans, the heavens opened. Fans are now braving torrential rain for what many think could be the band's final hometown gig. People are wearing ponchos, covering heads with chairs and umbrellas as they watch the band. Tents are now closed so there is no shelter from the terrible weather on the Downs and a large number of fans are already leaving. Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser has already joined the band to perform Black Milk and is expected to return for the classic Teardrop.
Meanwhile, people are reporting that they can hear the gig for miles around and as far as Brislington on the other side of the city.
Carla Denyer at the Massive Attack show
Carla Denyer MP: "This event has the potential to be really ground-breaking"
"I had a Massive Attack poster on my bedroom wall when I was about 15 years old, but I have never seen them live," said Carla Denyer MP.
Massive Attack endorsed Denyer in the 2024 General Election and she hopes that the climate-conscious nature of the gig today is the "beginning of lots of other events in Bristol."
"This event has the potential to be ground-breaking. I admire that Massive Attack are not going to wait for anyone else and they're going to show everyone else how its done."
Speaking to Carla Denyer on the Forwards festival not using the same eco-conscious measures next week, she said:
"Bristol City Council does have the ability to license for these events and I know there have already been conversations between members around this."
Carla Denyer and Dale Vince in discussion on stage
A huge crowd has gathered to see Green MP Carla Denyer in conversation with Dale Vince, founder of Ecotricity, and activist Dominique Palmer on whether the new Labour Government will be the greenest government we have ever seen. Carla Denyer said: “Massive Attack have been making this point themselves, we have to decarbonise all parts of our lives. “Just this week the government announced investment in new cycle roads, but they also announced London City Airport expansion, which mostly flies private jets. “I am reasonably confident that this will be the greenest government ever because the bar is so low, but I don’t think they have the commitment and bravery for policy we need to be transformative.”
Crowds gather for 3D artwork
Bristol Live reporter Zoe Glascow is at the Massive Attack event on The Downs. She said: " Huge crowds have gathered to see Massive Attack today. It’s estimated that 34,000 tickets have been sold. Guests are gathering around band member Robert Del Naja’s artwork sale stand and the ‘make your own merch' has been particularly popular.
"The Novara Media stage is at full capacity with crowds spilling out before Green MP Carla Denyer goes up to speak. We have heard from a number of guests including economist Grace Blakeley, as well as a conversation about Bristol’s black history, and the protest culture that has been born of the oppression from the Bristol Bus Boycott.
"Guest speakers have applauded the protection the Bristol community gave to those in fear of far-right demonstrators at the Mercure Hotel. The day has a festival feel, and although many fans are here to support Massive Attack in what may or may not be their final Bristol gig on this scale, there is a sense of urgency for climate action, and overhauling the way large-scale gigs and festivals are held."
It has been reported that the queue for the 3D (Robert Del Naja) artwork is considerably longer than the one for the official merch
Weather ahead of Massive Attack's performance
It has been a grey day here but that hasn't stopped thousands gathering to support Bristol's beloved group. The Downs has seen a little drizzle but the festival went on as usual, with t-shirt printing continuing and people whipping their ponchos on. We are expecting some light rain in the next hour but it is looking set to be a dry evening.
How much is Robert Del Naja's artwork selling for?
Queues have been consistently long throughout the afternoon as fans hope to get their hands on artwork by Robert '3D' Del Naja. The queues have been significantly larger than those for the official merchandise stand. Prices range from £20-£150.
Transport advice as traffic builds
Up to 34,000 people are expected to attend the Massive Attack event. They are being encouraged to walk, cycle or use public transport to reach the gig. There have been five special trains laid on to take people back across the South West at the end of tonight.
Massive Attack claims the one-day show will be the lowest-carbon concert of its scale ever organised, and the band wants it to be an example for the live music industry to follow.
However, for those who are driving to the eventy, it has been reported on Sunday afternoon that the M32 southbound partially blocked, with traffic queueing due to a problem at Junction Three with the A4320 at St Pauls.
What food is available?
Devil's Kitchen, the makers behind vegan meals for one in four primary schools in England, have two burgers for sale. Both vegan options, the 'Big Dunc' shiiitake mushroom burger is £9 and the 'Mexican Wave' spicy bean and jalapeno burger is £8.
Make your own merch for free
Artists Cat Phillipps and Peter Kennard have set up a stand for people to create their own merch for free. In collaboration with not-for-profit 'No Sweat', as well as donated clothes, gig-goers can stamp their own t-shirts, jeans and other pieces. There is a QR code to donate to MSF.
Robert Del Naja says event is an "incredible thing to be part of"
Del Naja said: “Massive Attack and Act 1.5 have built a community of organisations here – new collaborations, doing things differently, experimenting and learning across power, waste and travel. The local pre-sale, special access for those coming on public transport, extra trains after the show and free electric shuttle buses are all aimed at making the low carbon options affordable, accessible and enjoyable for the audience. It’s wonderful to be part of such a significant and innovative low carbon event. Their imagination and ambition is boundless – it’s an incredible thing to be part of.”
What time will Massive Attack be playing?
14:00 - 15:00: DJ Milo
15:15 - 16:00: Sam Morton
16:40 - 17:40: Lankum
18:25 - 19:25: Killer Mike
20:25 - 22:15: Massive Attack
Transport for the day
Buses will arrive and leave from Stoke Road. The stop is around a 7-10 minute walk from the entrance. Buses will run throughout the day to take fans to and from Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway.
Robert Del Naja will be selling his artwork at the event
We are expecting to see Robert Del Naja's artwork for sale at The Downs as he shares teaser images of a makeshift studio on Instagram.
