The best time to visit Dubai is from November to March when temperatures are pleasant and outdoor activities, like visiting bustling souks and cafes, abound. However, during the winter high season, you will also find larger crowds and higher hotel rates as most people plan their trips around this desert city's cooler temperatures.

Summer months get a bad rap because of the extreme heat, but Kelvin Cheung, chef and partner at restaurant and cocktail bar Jun’s , finds joy in all seasons. “During the winter months, my son and I bundle up and build sandcastles in the sun, while in the summer we jump in Jacuzzi-temperature waters in the early morning or late evenings, searching for sea creatures.” 

The shoulder season is a much-overlooked time to visit Dubai, offering milder temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) and less crowded streets. Founder and editor of " Near + Far ," an independent travel magazine for travelers to the Middle East, Isabella Sullivan says, “I genuinely believe Dubai is a year-round destination. Of course, winter has the best weather, but I love the heat, and the shoulder months are my favorites, as you don’t need a jacket at night.”

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Smaller Crowds 

During the high season, Dubai can get so crowded that it becomes difficult to get tickets to attractions or score reservations at the hottest restaurants and legal cocktail bars . If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to visit anytime from April to October. This includes the shoulder and low seasons when residents often leave the country and tourists are few and far between. Plus, fewer crowds coincide with more favorable accommodation rates. It’s also the perfect time to pack your itinerary with things to do like seeing the sunset at the Burj Khalifa, getting a photo at the Dubai Frame without throngs of people in the background, or taking your time without the crowds at the Museum of the Future .

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Good Weather 

The best time to visit Dubai for good weather coincides with the busy tourist season. November through February is a beautiful time to visit, as temperatures range between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. “In the winter, the weather is so fantastic,” Sullivan says. It's also a perfect time to experience the city’s diverse topography. “With consistently beautiful weather in winter, you can be at the beach, in one of the world’s most dynamic, futuristic cities, and then into the rolling, peaceful dunes of the desert all in a matter of hours,” adds Sullivan. The weather during these months usually allows for T-shirts during the day and long sleeves or a light jacket in the evening.

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Lower Prices 

The summer months of June, July, and August are when you will likely score the best deals on Dubai hotels. These may be the hottest months of the year, but it’s also the perfect time to explore the plethora of indoor attractions Dubai has to offer, from numerous aquariums and museums to the sprawling Mohammed bin Rashid Library. “I think only recently has summer evolved into a season that’s worth visiting. You can get a great hotel deal during summer, and sitting by the pool or swimming outside is entirely possible," Sullivan says. "The city isn’t crowded, so you can get a booking at the most coveted restaurants or beach clubs. I think summer in Dubai will only get more attractive as the years go on."

Best Times to Visit Dubai for Festivals and Events

Festivals and events occur throughout the year in Dubai — in hot, warm, and mild temperatures — so the best time to visit depends on your specific interests. Sullivan says she admires that Dubai goes out of its way to create things for people to do. One example is Dubai Summer Surprises , a city-wide shopping festival offering a lineup of steep discounts and special offers, plus concerts and other events, during the low season.

Many enjoy visiting in December for one of the city's most-anticipated holidays, UAE National Day when Emiratis celebrate the anniversary of the country's independence with fireworks, cultural performances, falconry displays, and more. Others love being in the city during Ramadan (dates change year to year), when Dean Hayter, travel product manager at Origin, says the city comes alive. "There is such a wonderful sense of festivity. The buildings are covered in lights, there are so many great locations to meet with friends for Iftar, the meal that breaks the fast; it's always my favorite time to be in Dubai.”

Worst Times to Visit Dubai 

While most of the northern hemisphere is enjoying summer, June to August are the worst months to visit Dubai, as temperatures are almost unbearably hot with highs that can reach over 105 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of only around 90 degrees. In addition to the scorching heat, high humidity plays a role in how hot and sweaty you’ll feel. Even though this may be the most uncomfortable time to visit, Hayter says there are plenty of ways to escape high temperatures. "I spent every summer in Dubai, and you can still have a fantastic experience if you know where to go and how to avoid the heat. Luckily, everywhere has AC (even the bus stops)."

Sullivan makes a salient point that Dubai works hard to accommodate its residents and visitors during this much-dreaded season. “They know summer is hot, and people often leave to go elsewhere, so they build indoor sports centers and facilities and run summer-long initiatives,” says Sullivan. For example, you can ski in the middle of summer at Ski Dubai inside the Mall of the Emirates or ice skate year-round at the Dubai Mall. And you probably won't get hot while exploring the sunken wonders of Deep Dive Dubai , the deepest indoor diving pool in the world.

Outbound spending by the UAE residents on travel and tourism will see a massive increase in 2024, according to a new report released on Wednesday.

The latest figures released by the World Travel and Tourism Council, outbound spending by UAE travellers is projected to grow 21.6 per cent to $38.31 billion (Dh140.6 billion) this year compared to $31.51 billion (Dh115.64 billion) in 2023. In 2019, UAE travellers' outbound travel and tourism spending was $28.7 billion.

The UAE's inbound and outbound travel and tourism have grown exceptionally in the post-pandemic period as countries reopened their borders for travel and tourism.

Ranked 15th, UAE residents will be the largest spenders among Arab and Middle Eastern countries this year. UAE travellers will spend more than those from Taiwan (China), Switzerland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Brazil.

Seeing a massive opportunity in this segment, the UAE launched a domestic tourism strategy in 2023 to capitalise on residents' growing outbound spending and focus more on staycations, especially during the summer. This would help expand the local economy and create a large number of jobs in the travel and tourism industry.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council's 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report released on Wednesday, international visitors' spending in UAE is projected to grow 9.4 per cent to $52.2 billion (Dh191.57 billion) in 2024 compared to $47.7 billion (Dh175 billion) last year. The UAE will be the 10th largest recipient globally and second in the region after Saudi Arabia (ranked 6th) in 2024.

Driven by Dubai, inbound tourism bounced back strongly in the UAE after the pandemic. In fact, the UAE was one of the first countries where the travel and tourism sector recovered to the pre-pandemic level.

"As we look forward to a record-breaking 2024, it's clear that travel and tourism are not only back on track but also set to achieve unprecedented growth. We will continue to prioritise sustainability and inclusivity, ensuring that this growth benefits everyone and protects our planet for future generations. The sector's resilience and potential for innovation continue to drive us forward," said Julia Simpson, president and CEO of WTTC.

Regional & global

The Middle East's travel and tourism sector expanded by 25.3 per cent in 2023, bringing the sector's economic contribution back to its 2019 level. This amounted to $460 billion, or 6.7 per cent of the region's economy. Similarly, employment supported by the sector increased by 11.8 per cent to reach 7.7 million jobs. This represents a growth of 3.3 per cent over the 2019 level.

Saudi Arabia, representing around a quarter of the region's sector, has quickly recovered. Its sector's contribution to national GDP in 2023 was 29.1 per cent above the 2019 level. Similarly, the UAE's travel sector – the third largest in the region – experienced robust growth, with its contribution to GDP increasing by 14.3 per cent over the 2019 level.

Globally, the 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report revealed the US as the world's most influential travel and tourism market, contributing a record-breaking $2.36 trillion to the nation's economy last year.

The latest report from the global tourism body revealed China as the world's second most powerful market, with a GDP contribution of $1.3 trillion in 2023, underscoring its impressive rebound despite the late reopening of its borders.

Germany secured the third spot with a $487.6 billion economic contribution, while Japan, which was in fifth place in 2022, jumped to fourth position, contributing $297 billion.

The United Kingdom is among the top five countries, contributing $295.2 billion.

Ras Al Khaimah Goes After Indian Tourists, Dubai’s Biggest Source Market

Planning to triple its tourism numbers in a few years, Ras Al Khaimah wants more Indian tourists. Thankfully, so does the upcoming $3.9 billion Wynn resort located there.

The northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has its eyes on India for inbound tourism. That on its own isn’t new – just about everyone wants to tap into India’s growing middle class. But in doing so, RAK could chip away at Dubai’s largest source market.

Ras Al Khaimah brought in 618,600 tourists in the first half of this year, up 3.4% year-on-year. India was the number 6 source market: 4% of those travelers came from India, or 12,582.

Speaking Thursday on local UAE radio Dubai Eye, Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority chief Raki Phillips said India has immense potential, as does wider Asia.

“Ras Al Khaimah is primarily a leisure destination, 90% of our tourists come for a vacation. India for us is a tremendous source market. IndiGo flies here from two destinations,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities in Europe, and we want to explore further East in Asia, those are our new frontiers.”

Rather than take potential business away from Dubai, Phillips is calling for travelers to try both in one trip. At Skift Global Forum 2023, Phillips said a unified visa to facilitate travel across the Gulf would make regional tourism more “collaborative.”

Dubai stopped reporting its source market data last October, but we know South Asia accounted for 1.6 million tourists in the first half of the year. Of the 17.15 million international tourists in Dubai last year, 2.5 million came from India.

Wynn, RAK and India

All across Middle East travel, leaders are talking about how to tap into India. The upcoming Wynn Al Marjan resort in Ras Al Khaimah has a particular interest in capturing Indian business.

Talking about the Wynn Resorts in UAE’s Ras Al Khaimah, CEO Craig Scott Billings said during the recent earnings call that while Europe is an important market for the UAE in general, India is also a huge market for this part of the world. “There’s a lot of folks there. There’s a lot of wealth in India, and that’s going to be an important market.”

In 2023, 28.2 million Indians traveled abroad, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, while overseas spending hit $31.7 billion, with 54% dedicated to travel. 

Phillips said that the upcoming Wynn Resorts project – thought to eventually house the country’s first legal casino – could account for as much as a third of the emirate’s total tourism economy.

When asked how much of RAK’s projected growth will be thanks to Wynn and “new entertainment,” Phillips said: “That would probably be a third of the incremental business coming in. The other parts of it will come from our other attractions. What we do really well – everything from UK to India – we capture markets really well. Now we’re exploring other Asian markets.”

Expanding the Airport

Ras Al Khaimah brought in 1.2 million overnight visitors last year and wants to increase that number three-fold to 3.6 million by 2030.

To achieve this, in addition to alluring projects like the Wynn, RAK needs airlift. The tourism CEO said that the Ras Al Khaimah International Airport plans to triple its passengers by the end of the decade.

He said: “At the airport, we’re doing a big expansion to grow it. Last year it had 600,000 passengers and by the end of the decade, we’re looking at close to two million. One way to grow it is the cargo business, charter flights and commercial flights.”

“We’ve been pretty active with a lot of airlines, we’ve had discussions with Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, but we’re also talking to international carriers.”
