Kids explore magical worlds to discover what happened. It can be difficult to control the light blob; kids may require significant practice before they get the hang of it. Three levels of play allow kids to adjust how challenging the levels are. A calming musical soundtrack matches the magical feeling the graphics impart, but you can turn it off at any time. Kids can play in any of 13 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese, and German. What’s It About?

SHINE - JOURNEY OF LIGHT starts with a mystery: Where did all the moonies go? Kids guide the one remaining moonie, a little blob of light that helps the stars shine, through darkness as it navigates mazes, runs into various obstacles, and discovers surprises to solve the mystery of her disappearing friends. Complete each level to move up to the next through four worlds of 10 levels each. Three modes of difficulty allow kids to adjust how much of a challenge they want. An original soundtrack of calming music accompanies kids as they play.

Is It Any Good?

This unique runner game offers a stark contrast to the typical fast-paced frantic fare kids usually find. Light blobs slowly float across the screen, and calming music contributes to the meditative feel. Also doing its part to create that mood are the graphics, which are quite beautiful. The effect of watching that little light blob illuminate dark corners is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also surprisingly comforting. Of course, Shine - Journey of Light is still a challenge-based runner game, and all the calming elements in the world don't take away from that sense of frustration when you just can't get past a level. Furthermore, the controls feel a bit off, and it can be annoying when that little light blob just doesn't move the way you want it to. It would also be nice to see when the blob is losing strength to avoid sudden surprises. Hints for stuck moments would also be helpful. Thankfully, being able to adjust the level of challenge is a great kid-friendly antidote that mostly -- though not fully -- addresses these problems. With 40 levels and an accompanying narrative that guides players through a mystery to solve, kids may easily get hooked.

Families can talk about what effect the graphics and music of Shine - Journey of Light have on how they feel. Do kids feel calm, focused, and present as they play? Or do they feel frantic and pumped up? Why?

Encourage kids to learn and practice calming activities like deep breathing and visualizations. Even better, do them together as family.

Shine - Journey of Light review - "A calming adventure that doesn't outstay its welcome"

Sometimes it's nice to play a game that doesn't ask too much of you. And if that's the mood you're in at the moment then you could do a lot worse than checking out Shine. It's sort of like Badland if it swapped the gloomy early era Tim Burton visuals for something a little more Disney-friendly Tim Burton.

Floaty light

There are other blobs of light that you need to collect, and picking them up makes your golden ball glow more brightly. Take too long to get them though and your light starts to fade - if it fades too much then you die and you're dropped back to the last checkpoint.

To give you an idea of the thought that's gone into the game, those checkpoints are flowers that bloom as your light is cast over them. It's a nice touch, and there are little moments like that spread throughout the experience.

No, this isn't the sort of game that poses a massive challenge, but then that's not the point. As soon as you start playing it feels a bit like being enveloped by a nice warm hug. You want to keep playing because this is the kind of experience that makes you feel like the world isn't as horrid as you first thought.

It doesn't stay with you though. There's a soft flow when you're playing that's going to calm you down a little, but the edges of the world are going to creep back in the second you put it down. It's thoughtful, but in the end it's still a midcore game.

Light up my life

This is the mobile videogame equivalent of a big Christmas advert. While it's happening it's going to make you feel feelings, but once it's over and done with it's going to slip out of your mind pretty quickly.

Pleasant side-scroller that’s more experience than game

The thing about SHINE is that for a game, it knows it’s super easy. In fact, it has so little qualms about it, it goes to extensive lengths to avoid referring to itself as a game.

It sets itself up as the antidote to frenetic platformers and says its vision is to immerse players of all ages. And you know what, it does a great job of it. The music is atmospheric and retro space-agey, while the graphics have a hand-colored feel.

It also has a premium feel – from its professional voice over to its 40 levels (fully unlocked via IAP). While it’s not difficult to traverse or complete levels, it urges you to keep an eye out as you go for little bits and pieces to enhance the experience.

The aim to SHINE is simple, pick up the glowing orbs to stay alight – and alive

Oddly enough, the game mechanics are essentially Flappy Bird , with the speed and difficulty ramped down from a 10 to a 1. You take control of a ball of light which the intro explains is used to brighten the night sky, but now, just one remains, and it needs to find the others. The answer to where they’ve all gone is answered quickly enough – it turns out they’re all underground.

The levels come with some pleasantly uplifting messages…

So, to the underworld, where you use your finger to guide the ball of light, ever so slowly, through landscapes like the woods, picking up and absorbing other balls of light along the way.

The main aim is to pick up enough light to guide the way. Veer too close to accompany vegetation or the floor, and you might lose some and risk your journey to the next level. But really, it’s that simple.

So, let’s talk a little more about the soundtrack because it really is the brightest gem in the SHINE crown. It’s been created by acclaimed film and TV composer Christian Maier and anyone can listen to it via streaming platforms and iTunes, which we sincerely encourage you to do.

It does seem a shame that so much of the beautiful artwork spends so much time in shadow

SHINE isn’t groundbreaking, and while it’ll probably experience an initial surge, we’re not sure it’ll receive a mass audience due to its nature. It’ll be an incredibly rich and rewarding experience for a certain type of iPhone user, but a bit of an unfulfilling once for regular gamers. Either way, we’d say there’s definitely at least something for everyone – and even better that it lets you start the game before paying for the rest.

Shine: Journey of Light

Help a tiny floating ball of light travel through dark tunnels and reconnect with all of its light-ball friends. If you go too long without finding a new friend to recharge your light with, your light will fade out and you'll be returned to the beginning of that maze or to the last orange flower that blossomed along your path. This app is darker and moodier than all of the rest of the apps by this developer, so it feels more appropriate for a slightly older audience. If your child would be scared by shadowy goblin characters with white eyes this might not be the right game for you.  If your child might be distraught by the light dying or getting trapped by falling rocks, or if they would be unduly frustrated by being sent back to the beginning, check the settings and switch to "explorer" mode where those limitations are eliminated! The game also requires a measure of impulse control as tapping on the screen doesn't make your light go faster, it simply makes it float upwards (which is a little counterintuitive but ends up being the "thinking" work of the game). The design of the game, despite its darkness, is lush and beautiful with nice touches like the soundtrack sounding "underwater" whenever the light floats into or through a pool of water. Because you can't hurry the light along, and because the soundtrack is rather dreamy, this can be a relaxing app to play (especially in explorer mode!).  If you enjoy the app and want more, there is an option for an in-app purchase to unlock the entire game once you've played through the initial levels.  The app also includes 13 different language options for both the narrator and the written text on the screen ( English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, & Turkish).

The Princess of Wales has delivered a heartfelt message to the nation as she bravely gives an update on her cancer treatment.

Kate underwent months of treatment after announcing her diagnosis earlier this year. Now the future Queen has revealed she has finished a course of preventative chemotherapy and she is looking forward to returning to some royal engagements.

In a deeply personal video message, Kate is seen enjoying precious family moments with Prince William and their three children, Prince Louis, Prince George and Prince Charlotte.

In Kate's voiceover, she bravely opens up about how challenging her health journey has been. She said: "The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we've had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you."

The selfless princess put her family into focus during throughout beautiful video, and made it her mission to address anyone impacted by cancer too.

As part of the candid and heartfelt footage, Kate takes a moment to pay tribute to "all those who are continuing their own cancer journey" saying: "I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand."

In a message that has left royal fans in tears, Kate said poignantly: "Out of darkness can come light, so let that light shine bright."

The mum-of-three said she is looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a "few more public engagements" when she can, adding that she is entering this new phase of recovery with a "renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life."

She said: "Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes."

As she reached out to those who are also going through similar struggles, Kate made clear how grateful she is for her family around her and gave a special nod to her husband William .

The video comes after the family spent quality time relaxing at Amner Hall this summer, their Norfolk retreat. They also visited Balmoral with other senior royals, as per family tradition.
