SAPA & BEYOND: AN ICONIC ACTIVE DESTINATION

For Topas, Sapa is where it all began, starting in the 1990s when we first discovered the treasures of this region and still going strong nearly 30 years later.

We believe exploring the magnificent scenery and spending time with ethnic minority groups is at the heart of any journey to Vietnam. Through community development and empowerment initiatives, our hard work has provided thousands of travelers and locals the benefit of cultural exchange in a responsible way throughout Sapa.

It’s for this reason that Sapa is featured heavily in our Classic journeys as well our Family packages .

When you travel with us, you will come to love Sapa just as much as we do.  Learn more about this enchanting destination below and how you can work a Sapa tour into your next adventure to Vietnam.  Sapa especially pairs well with other essential Vietnam tourist destinations, from the storied streets of Hanoi and magical landscapes of Lan Ha Bay to postcard perfect beaches hugging the sparkling turquoise sea.

Or, browse some of our bespoke Sapa tours for more travel inspiration.

There’s nowhere in the world quite like Sapa. A town founded by the French during colonial times (though close to a collection of existing hamlets and villages) this hill station has experienced a history of ups and downs.

Principally a retreat for long escape holidays from  Hanoi ’s summer heat, it soon became a hotspot for European anthropologists keen to study Southeast Asia’s rich cultural history and diversity. Nowadays, local cultures contrast with foreign nationalities, genuine colonial architecture sits beside kitsch Soviet copies, and ladies grilling corn crouch outside Italian pizza restaurants.

The town will continue to change, but experiences like warming your hands on a cup of coffee with a view of mountains, standing above the clouds on the Roof of Indochina, or haggling over textiles in the bustling market will always remain a quintessential part of traveling through Vietnam. Curious about what else there is to do in Sapa? We’ve curated a helpful list of our favorite things to do in Sapa  here  to help you out.

After experiencing the rainbow of color represented by the peoples of Sapa and beyond, you’ll see that  kaleidoscopic  is no understatement. This is down to the ethnic diversity, with H’mong, Dzao, Tay, Giay, Xa Pho, and many others represented throughout the area.  Many of these groups can be segmented even further, which further enhances the differences.

The Black H’mong and Flower H’mong may both speak H’mong, but the colors they don themselves in couldn’t be more different. Less striking but just as enchanting is the architecture. Each group have a different way of constructing houses, from H’mong bungalows atop mountain peaks to the Tay that live in towering stilt houses alongside rivers. Get to know the people of the northern mountains through meaningful activities, such as hiking and homestays while traveling through Sapa. Or support the vibrant weaving and dying culture by purchasing textiles and joining workshops.

Picture a mountain. At the top there are dark green jungles that blanket the peak. About halfway down, waterfalls of rice terraces are carved into the slope like staircases for giants. And at the bottom, a flowing river trickles over rocks as it meanders down the valley. The forests are evergreen and the rivers rarely run dry, but the rice terraces shift dramatically throughout the year.

Sapa is a year-round travel destination, with the rice cycle showcasing the beauty of each season in spectacular fashion, particularly from March to May and September to early November. Whether it’s cycling, motorbiking, driving, or trekking in Sapa, there is no wrong way to discover the gorgeous landscapes and rich cultural diversity of the region. That being said, we believe there is no better way to experience the incredible landscapes of northern Vietnam than by joining a Sapa trekking tour.

Perched on a mountaintop with commanding views of the surrounding highlands,  Topas Ecolodge is one of Asia’s most incredible accommodations. You’ll stay in stone cottages that coil around the peak, ensuring that each one offers a different view.

Furthermore, Topas Ecolodge is the perfect place to base yourself in order to deeply explore the pristine landscapes and rich cultural diversity of Sapa. Whether you’re short on time or have a couple weeks to spare, don’t miss out on your chance to stay  at one of the top-rated sustainable properties in the world !

Topas Ecolodge

Young woman looking out the window on the mountains

Surrounded by rice terraces, rolling hills, green forests and villages, Topas Ecolodge Sapa is a Danish-owned boutique property situated atop two conical hills deep in the mountains of Hoang Lien National Park, 45 minutes’ drive from Sapa in northern Vietnam.

Chalet-style Chic

Accommodation comprises 41 chalet-style stone bungalows in four different categories: Premium Executive Bungalows, Suite Bungalows, Deluxe Suite Bungalows, and the new and exclusive Pool Villas. Each bungalow and villa is constructed in local white granite, with its own private balcony offering glorious views of the rice terraces, the lower Sapa Valley and the Tonkinese Alps beyond.

The rooms are furnished in a cool minimal style in an unmistakably Scandinavian aesthetic, all with ensuite tiled bathrooms. Solar panels heat the water and provide electricity for the lights. Heating is provided during the winter months. There is no television or Wi-Fi in the rooms so be prepared to unplug and reconnect with nature. All bungalows can be configured with either one queen size or two twin beds.

Dining With A Danish Touch

All meals are served in a central two-storey building. Downstairs is a relaxing bar with cushioned furniture, while dining takes place on the upper floor. Topas Ecolodge is flanked by its own farm, which supplies the kitchen with fresh vegetables.

The Danish owners have developed a sustainable food supply system created from premium international ingredients such as imported meats and cheese as well as high-quality local ingredients. The Danish head chef works closely with a local team to create hearty Asian meals, served on a set-menu basis, which changes daily depending on seasonal produce.

Sublime Spa & Infinity Pools

Topas Ecolodge has two infinity pools, both with jaw dropping views of the peaks and valleys. The upper pool has a shallow section suitable for children and is heated with an eco-friendly system using 85% less energy than standard heating technology. The lower pool and jacuzzi is for adults only.

The Rice Spa offers traditional Red Dzao herbal baths and an array of wellness treatments, including massages and facials, created from the combination of ancient knowledge, local materials, and modern techniques. Mountain bikes are available free of charge, and the lodge offers a great range of excursions around the area.

A Base For Exploration

The epic natural scenery and mountain trails surrounding Topas Ecolodge Sapa, make it an ideal base for exploring the awe-inspiring nature of northern Vietnam as well as the diverse minority villages of the area via active pursuits such as hiking and biking as well as cultural immersion through ethnic village visits, market stops, and textile workshops. A free shuttle bus operates daily to and from Sapa Town, 11 miles away.

Ideal for active families, couples and honeymooners, a stay at Topas Ecolodge is the perfect way to experience the authentic charm of Northern Vietnam, its landscape, fresh air and ethnic minorities. Furthermore, you will enjoy all the comforts of a pleasant stay in an environment that is making a commitment to preservation and sustainable development of the nature and people of Sapa Valley.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Ready to travel?

We’ve been crafting adventures in Vietnam since 1993, which is why we know they come in all shapes and sizes. A personal experiment with street food is an adventure – as is crawling through caves with the kids.

We believe that when it comes to travel, there is no such thing as “one size fits all.” Instead, the key to a remarkable Vietnam holiday is working out the right fit for you – and that’s where Topas Travel comes in.

VMM-Vietnam-Mountain-Marathon-2

AN EXTRAORDINARY MOUNTAIN TRAIL SERIES

Vietnam Trail Series is the result of a love of mountain running and a fascination with Vietnam. It is organised by Topas Group, adventure travel experts since 1973.

Our Vietnam races began in 2013, when we launched the Vietnam Mountain Marathon , now one of Asia’s largest trail races with more than 5,500 runners.

The original idea was to create a race way beyond the usual trail run with a route that led runners through some of Vietnam’s most beautiful scenery populated by the countries many ethnic groups.

Our three other races, Vietnam Jungle Marathon ,  Vietnam Trail Marathon  and  Vietnam Ultra Marathon  were founded on the same ideals.

Join us for Vietnam Trail Series races and prepare for some extraordinary adventures!

VMM-Vietnam-Mountain-Marathon-1

Topas has now raised over VND11billion (USD462,000) in cash for good causes. We have also given bibs worth VND2billion (USD84,000) to charity runners – these are given both to disadvantaged young people helped by Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation and also to those raising funds for our other partner charities.

Through these donations, Topas has funded the work of Operation Smile , Newborns Vietnam , Blue Dragon , Hue Help and Sapa o Chau . We also carry out local projects in villages along the route, for example a school house has been constructed to vastly improve the education conditions for children living in the mountains.

Disko Island, Icebergs and Eqi Glacier

Experience disko island’s glaciers, disko bay’s huge icebergs and legendary whales, then further north, eqi glacier's deafening calving events. on this trip you’ll experience ice in many forms..

topas tour

Tour Description

In our opinion, Qeqertarsuaq on Disko Island is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. Basalt columns and hot springs are evidence of the island’s past volcanic history. The coastal lowlands are renowned for diverse and abundant flora. The mountainous hinterland hosts the Lyngmark Glacier – one of the few places in Greenland where you can try dog sledding in summer.

You’ll travel to the unique Glacier Lodge Eqi – a small community of cabins facing the glacier Eqip Sermia, located just 80 km / 3-5 hours by boat north of Ilulissat.

Ilulissat is Greenland’s 3rd largest city and known as the Iceberg Capital. Admire these ice giants from the comfort of your fjord view room at Hotel Icefiord, located on the waterfront with a view of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Ilulissat Icefjord.

  • Icebergs, glaciers and Ilulissat Icefjord
  • Sailing with plenty of opportunity to see whales
  • Possibility for world-class walks along beautiful trails
  • Qeqertarsuaq ‘city’, known for its friendly and accommodating people
  • UNESCO World Heritage Listed destination
  • Bright days and nights thanks to the Midnight sun
  • Disko Bay's most sought after destination: Glacier Lodge Eqi
  • Experience the contrast between a ‘big city’ and a settlement in Greenland

Day 1. Copenhagen - Ilulissat via Kangerlussuaq From Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq the flight time is approx. 4 hours and 40 minutes. In Kangerlussuaq you switch to a smaller domestic flight which takes you to Ilulissat.

Day 2. Ilulissat - Qeqertarsuaq Afternoon departure by Disko Line fast ferry to Qeqertarsuaq, the only ‘city’ on Disko Island. The trip takes about 1½ hours. In Qeqertarsuaq you’ll be staying at Hotel Disko Island.

Day 3. Qeqertarsuaq  Qeqertarsuaq is made by vulcanic activity, and therefore you will find different landscapes compared to what you will see at the "mainland".

Day 4. Qeqertarsuaq - Ilulissat After a few days in paradise (in our opinion), the trip continues to the iceberg capital Ilulissat. Here is also beautiful but in a different way. On arrival in Ilulissat the hotel bus will meet you at the port and take you to Hotel Icefiord for the night.

Day 5. Ilulissat - Glacier Lodge Eqi Morning cruise of 3-5 hours to Eqi. The boat will drift for about two hours in front of Eqip Sermia glacier, waiting for the ice to calve while you enjoy lunch. You’ll then land at Port Victor for your 2 night stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi.

Day 6. Glacier Lodge Eqi - Ilulissat The last morning at Glacier Lodge Eqi to enjoy the unique view and go for a walk, before the boat takes you back to Ilulissat in the afternoon.

Day 7. Ilulissat, City Tour and Sermermiut Hiking The morning is spent with a guide who will show you around Ilulissat. In the afternoon a guide will take you on a beautiful walk to Sermermiut.

Day 8. Ilulissat - Copenhagen via Kangerlussuaq Take your last look at Ilulissat and the icefjord before your short domestic flight to Kangerlussuaq, connecting with a trans-Atlantic flight to Copenhagen.

Click here to see the detailed daily itinerary

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1. copenhagen - ilulissat via kangerlussuaq.

Beautifully situated in the archipelago on the edge of Disko Bay, lies Greenland's 5th largest city, Aasiaat. Aasiaat is located in the south west corner of Disko Bay on an island. With approx. 3,100 inhabitants, it’s Greenland's 5th largest city.

topas tour

Day 2. Ilulissat - Qeqertarsuaq

Departure from Ilulissat to Qeqertarsuaq by fast ferry (1½ hours) across Disko Bay. You’ll be staying 2 nights at Hotel Disko Island. In our opinion, Qeqertarsuaq is one of the most beautiful places in Greenland. Glacier covered basalt mountains dominate the hinterland, but on the coast you’ll find an abundance of flora, with angelica being one of the most prominent. Qeqertarsuaq means "big island" and it is by far the largest off the coast of Greenland. There is only one town and a small settlement. The rest of the island is raw and impressive nature. B / - / -

Qeqertarsuaq - things to do...

Qeqertarsuaq was founded in 1773 as a whaling station. The city has 850 inhabitants and is beautifully situated overlooking Disko Bay. You can travel to Qeqertarsuaq from both Ilulissat and Aasiaat.

Day 3. Qeqertarsuaq

Today is at leisure, but if you’re fit enough, we recommend a guided tour to Lyngmark Glacier. Go kayaking or visit our sauna placed right on the beach with view to icebergs - a dip in the sea, among icebergs will give you a fresh touch of Greenland. B / - / -

Day 4. Qeqertarsuaq - Ilulissat

The trip continues to the iceberg capital Ilulissat. On arrival in Ilulissat you’ll be transferred by Hotel Icefiord's bus to your home for the next 2 nights. The hotel has a good restaurant, but if you’d like something different, Ilulissat has a variety of cafes and restaurants offering burgers, Thai food and fine dining. Ilulissat Icefjord was admitted to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2004, and was one of the first areas in the Arctic to be placed on the list. Although protected, we have special permits to sail among the icebergs and conduct helicopter tours. B / - / -

topas tour

Day 5. Ilulissat - Glacier Lodge Eqi

Early morning departure by boat to the calving glacier Eqi, a journey of about 3-5 hours. The boat will be positioned a safe distance in front of the glacier so you can hopefully witness a calving. Lunch is served on board. Early afternoon you’ll arrive at Glacier Lodge Eqi where you’ll be accommodated in a comfortable cottage with beautiful views of the calving glacier. The stay is ‘all inclusive’, which means breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. There are no shops so no possibility to buy anything, but of course you can bring drinks or snacks from Ilulissat if you wish. B/ L / D

Day 6. Glacier Lodge Eqi - Ilulissat

Breakfast and lunch are served at Glacier Lodge Eqi. For those who wish, after breakfast there is a beautiful hike to the glacial moraine. Walk past the lagoon to the front of the glacier and bring your lunch sandwich from Café Victor. Enjoy your little picnic seated in the front row at the old edge of the moraine, overlooking the deep ice slopes of the glacier. The hiking trip typically takes about 4 hours, returning to Glacier Lodge Eqi in time for the cruise back to Ilulissat. The boat departs Eqi at 14:00 hrs (2 pm), with arrival in Ilulissat around 19:00 hrs (7 pm). Two more nights at Hotel Icefiord. B / L / -

Ilulissat - enourmouse icebergs

For many enthusiasts, Ilulissat (formally Jakobshavn) is considered “the Navel of the World” when discussing travel to Greenland.

topas tour

Day 7. Ilulissat - City Tour and Sermermiut Hiking

Breakfast while admiring the beautiful view of the icefjord. This morning you’ll take a guided city walk to gain insight into everyday life and a little about local history, nature and of course the fishing industry.

Afternoon guided hike to the old Inuit settlement Sermermiut, overlooking the icefjord mouth. Beautifully situated on the outskirts of Ilulissat, the hike is about 5 km and reasonably easy. UNESCO’s addition of Ilulissat Icefjord and Sermermiut to its World Heritage List has had a significant positive impact to the region. Madrid Tapas Tour Reviews

1.  tapas, taverns & history tour madrid.

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure: C. de la Misericordia, 2, 28013 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 6:30 pm
  • Includes: Small-group tour (maximum 10 guests), food tastings (enough for a full dinner), wine tastings (5 glasses of local wine and drinks), expert local culinary guide, Devouring Madrid guide, packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city

Starting things off on the right foot, we have the Tapas, Taverns & History Tour Madrid . The title sums up this 4-hour tour pretty well, leading you through all kinds of local historical and culinary highlights. As Madrid can get pretty hot, this is a tour that takes place in the afternoon, which is perfect for enjoying some classic Spanish drinks as well!

Limited to just 10 people, this walking tour is much more personal and feels like you’re learning about the city with local friends. Meet up with your guide in central Madrid and start off by walking over to a chill, ambient bar. Here, you’ll get to try a vermouth aperitif that everyone seems to love.

This legendary tavern is deeply connected to the country’s Civil War, and try a tapa dish that’s been served this way for over a century.

After you have a delicious drink and some food in your stomach, it’s time to head off on a 45-minute history walk through the oldest neighborhoods in the city, towards the Royal Palace. Your guide will fill you in on how Madrid started as a quaint village and exploded over the years into an enormous empire.

Now that you’ve walked quite a bit, it’s time to head to the next tapas bar: Mesón del Champiñon. As the name suggests, it’s all about delicious grilled mushrooms, along with some Padrón peppers.

After these treats, head to Plaza Mayor and learn about all kinds of interesting anecdotes and stories that took place here over the centuries.

You’ll walk by Petit Palace Posada del Peine (city’s oldest hotel), Puerta del Sol, and then try signature tapas of gambas al ajillo and wine at La Casa del Abuelo. Meaning “grandfather’s house”, it’s a very homey place that’s been in business for over 100 years.

You’ll then check out Plaza de Santa Ana and learn about the square originally constructed in 1910 during Joseph Bonaparte’s reign. Then, fit your way into Casa Toni which is one of the only traditional tapas places left in the city, where you’ll try all kinds of incredible classic specialties.

Next up, we have a slightly shorter tour which gives you excellent insight into delicious tapas and learn about Spanish cuisine.

The Madrid Tapas and Wine Tasting Tour takes you to various stops comprised of hidden gems, and varied experiences for more of a locals-only take on things. This is a fantastic tour for trying out tapas the way they’re meant to be enjoyed while learning all about them.

Limited to a group size of just 12 people, you’ll have a more intimate experience which is perfect as some of the tapas spots are pretty compact. Whether you’re going alone or with family/a partner, you’re sure to meet some interesting people as well.

Meet your guide in central Madrid (Plaza de Santa Ana) where you’ll all start walking to the first location. As you stroll along, the guide will offer a fascinating commentary about Madrid’s culinary scene, the history of tapas, and more.

Once you get to the Literary Quarter/Barrio de Las Letras, you’ll begin your bar crawl! You’ll visit a total of 4 tapas bars here, with wine tastings at each one. These wines are locally-made from Spanish grapes like tempranillo, malvar, garnacha, and parellada. With each type, you’ll be served a tapa dish made to match them perfectly.

One of the crowd favorites was the Castilian sherry bar, where you’ll learn all about fortified wines that are particularly popular in this area. If you’ve never tried them before, be prepared because you’re going to love them.

The second bar gives speakeasy vibes, as it’s literally hidden behind a store! The third is a bustling, cozy little tavern that’ll transport you back hundreds of years. The fourth is a bit bohemian and mysterious, and has been around for well over a century.

3. Madrid Local Tapas & Wine tour w/ Drinks & Views from a Rooftop

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure: Pl. de San Miguel, 7, 28005
  • Departure Time: 11:30 AM, 6:00 PM
  • Includes: Local English-speaking guide, 4 stops of Tapas accompanied by wine, beer or soft drinks, cocktail on a terrace in Madrid in the 6:00PM tour

Have friendly, knowledgeable guides take you through Madrid from a locals’ point-of-view. Their passion for gastronomy and history is contagious, and will surely teach you a thing or two about tapas and Madrid’s rich background.

The Madrid Local Tapas & Wine tour with Drinks & Views from a Rooftop is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, making it quite a popular option.

Take a step back in time to the 17 th century, as you stroll through these historic streets while your guides provide commentary on the incredible architecture that lines them.

Madrid is a city heavily influenced on various cultures of people who moved from other countries to make Spain their home, while still keeping tradition at the forefront of their tapas and wines.

Meet your guide(s) at a central Madrid spot and head straight into the lively bohemian barrio of La Latina. Built on the site of a medieval Islamic fort, it consists of maze-like streets that are packed full of tapas bars, ancient gardens, and local legends.

Stop in front of the Opera House where you’ll hear many intriguing stories about its origins and events that took place here.

Next up is the Chocolatería San Ginés, where you’ll partake in a chocolate tasting and churros! Spanish churros are really something else, especially if your only prior experience with them are those in the US.

After fueling up on these treats, stroll around the center of Madrid as your guide takes you around some of the most important landmarks such as Plaza Mayor and de la Villa. As you see each, you’ll hear about the history about how the Spanish monarchy ruled over the Madrileños for many years.

After this, it’s time to eat some more at Mercado San Miguel, which has been serving hungry guests for over 100 years. Try a few different dishes while learning about the country’s culinary background, important traditions, and how their gourmet markets operated back in the day and presently.

Don’t get too full, because you’re then going to see el Mercado la Cebada local grocery market, and walk through El Rastro, which is the largest flea market in all of Spain! You’ll learn about the rather unpleasant origins of the name, along with its gypsy community background.

4. The Original Madrid Tapas Crawl

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Calle de José Abascal, 18, Calle de José Abascal, 18, 28003 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 6:30 PM
  • Includes:  Dinner, alcoholic beverages, local guide, suggestions for your days left in town, food and culture tips

Long story short, The Original Madrid Tapas Crawl is a ton of fun, a ton of flavor, and has been operating for many years. This top-rated tour has earned its stars for good reason, traveling to 4 different family-owned businesses with your small group for a customized experience.

If you’re looking for a tour that’s easy to fit into a busy schedule, this 2.5-hour excursion should be at the top of your list!

From even before you meet up with your group and guide, you’ll notice how well-organized and seamless the entire tour is. Meet up right by Alonso Cano subway elevator and make sure that you go with an empty stomach, because the amount of tapas you’re about to try will equal a full meal!

Your guide will lead you to a very non-touristy part of town which offers a more authentically Madrid experience.

You’ll visit 4 different locations, including a market cuisine restaurant with refreshing, cold cerveza, a modern “slow food” tavern, and a bodega that’s over 100 years old!

As you enjoy your drinks and tapas (including Iberian dried meat, seafood, prime extra virgin olive oil, pork belly, Spanish omelet, etc.), your guide will tell you all about the history behind the dishes and each place.

If you’re not a beer fan, you can opt for red or white wine, vermouth, and non-alcoholic options that match well with your tapas. They are also very accommodating to varied diets, intolerances, or allergies to ensure everyone can participate and have a great time.

5. Madrid walking tasting tour with Secret Food Tours

  • Departure: El Oso y el Madroño, Prta del Sol, 1, 28013 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 3:00 PM
  • Includes:  Beverages, food tasting, wine tasting, local guide, snacks, bottled water, alcoholic beverages

This 3-hour tour is a perfect balance of history, modern-day relevance, and Spanish culinary history. The 3-Hour Tapas Secret Food Tour of Madrid w/ Private Tour Option covers so much of Madrid’s culture, with a whopping 8 stops! Make sure to grab your favorite walking shoes because you’re going to be covering quite a bit of land, too!

This is a fantastic tour for all ages, however, it’s important to remember that the drinking age in Spain is 18 and not every child may enjoy the tapas. However, it’s still a fun time for the entire family, for friend groups, couples, and even if you’d like to check it out yourself!

After meeting in central Madrid, head into Sobrino de Botín – the oldest restaurant continuously operating on the planet! That’s right, it originally opened in 1725, essentially making it older than the United States of America!

It was even mentioned in a Hemingway novel, regarding its famous roast suckling pig that you can try on your tour.

Next, head to the Mercado San Miguel, which has also been very popular for years – particularly with tourists. Located very closely is Plaza Mayor, which was once the epicenter of “Madrid Viejo”.

At one time is hosted important executions and bullfights, and today holds much more lighthearted events: Christmas markets and various artisanal souvenirs.

Next, see the Royal Palace of Madrid, which is the official residence of the Spanish royal family and is now used for state ceremonies.

Close by is the practically hidden Chocolatería San Ginés café where you can enjoy some delicious coffee paired with their famously appetizing chocolate. After your treats, head to Puerta del Sol square, which is another vital meeting spot in the city.

  • Includes:  Local English-speaking guide 1 drink and 1 tapas dish at each stop (5 tastings stops – including a cheese and olive tasting, a bocadillo de calamares sandwich, a croquette tasting and a Spanish dessert), various types of drinks

Ever want to explore Madrid the way the locals do? While it’s always fun to see the biggest tourist attractions, those don’t always show you what the local culture is really like. The Madrid Evening Tapas Adventure Walking Tour with a Local will show you some local gems and teach you all about the history of the city’s literary quarter.

This 4-hour tour is limited to a maximum of 12 participants, which means you’ll have more attention from your guide and be able to ask questions comfortably. Not to mention, you’ll all be able to fit into these places easier, as some of the bars are pretty limited in seating.

Meet up at Plaza de la Villa, centrally-located for convenience! Your first mission is Mercado San Miguel, which is a very popular local market. Here, you’ll try a vermouth aperitivo, an array of Spanish cheeses, wine, and some of the most delicious olives you’ve ever tasted.

After, you’ll go over to the bustling barrio of La Latina , with maze-like lanes packed with bars offering tasty tapas and craft cocktails. The bar your group will be going to has just 6 tables so there’s definitely high demand (and with good reason!).

Then, head to Plaza Mayor which is also very rich in history and culinary culture. Learn about the events that have taken place in the plaza and enjoy an old tavern’s famous croquettes that’ve been served here for over 100 years. After enjoying these delicious potato treats, you’ll try some local desserts along with some dessert wine!

Madrid Travel Guide

Getting there.

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas is the main airport of Madrid, which is just 20 minutes or so from the city center or el centro . With 4 different terminals, it comes with quite a bit of shopping and other facilities. You can easily score a flight directly to Madrid from the vast majority of airports around the US as most of the major airlines serve this route.

The main carriers are Iberia , American Airlines, and Delta Airlines. In fact, if you’re flying from NYC or O’Hare in Chicago, you can expect direct flights in the off-season to cost you around 500 bucks!

Getting Around

The metro fares depend on which neighborhood you’re in, however, they’ll pretty consistently range from 1.50 to 2 euros (approx. $1.75 to $2.30). If you plan on using it frequently throughout your visit, you can also opt for a Tourist Card. These are either 1-day, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7-day quantities. We did the math, and they almost always are more budget-friendly. Just remember that it is open from 6am to 1:30am.

Bus – Available from 6am to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday, and 7am to 11pm on the weekends, the bus also covers a good amount of the city. However, there are also night buses that start at 11:30pm and take over into the late hours! This is perfect if you want to catch a rave, a late-night drink and dinner, or simply want to see the city from a different view.

Taxi – Taxis are always an option, and hailing them off the street is pretty simple. Throughout various tourist destinations, you’ll also often see them lining up just waiting for customers. Remember, that the ones who have lit up green lights on the roofs are those that are available. Try to ride only with the city’s official cabs, which are white with a red diagonal stripe on the sides, along with Madrid’s emblem.

Alternatively, you can use a ride-sharing app. Uber does operate in the city, so this is an option.

Tip: Always make sure that the taximeter is on as soon as your trip starts! Some drivers will keep it off to try and scam some extra cash from you. If your driver doesn’t speak English, you can ask them to turn it on like this: “Disculpe, se puede prender el meter, por favor?”.

Where to Stay

Madrid consists of many different neighborhoods, with quite a few being very attractive for tourists. No matter what your budget is, you’ll realistically find somewhere that works for you.

  • For the luxe and plush, opt for Salamanca . In fact, the neighborhood’s Calle de Serrano is often compared to New York City’s Upper East Side, and referred to as “The Golden Mile”.
  • If you’re on a budget, head to Lavapies or Chueca . Both areas are very affordable, and are easy to navigate by foot.
  • If you’re traveling with children/the entire family, check out Barrio de Las Letras , or Sol-Gran Via . Sol-Gran Via is the area located between Puerta del Sol and Gran Via. This is the center of Madrid’s “cultural spots”. It features all kinds of theaters, boutiques, along with many very important buildings and unique architecture.
  • If you’re planning on going out to bars, clubs, and other nightlife scenes, check out Chueca , or La Latina . Chueca is a lively area full of people from all walks of life, all ages, and interests. The cafes and masterly-crafted cocktails here are incredible. La Latina is also very high-energy, and you’ll find many little markets, tapas bars, and “block parties”.
  • If you’re top priority in Madrid is to try the most delicious food possible, you can stay anywhere in El Centro . This is actually one of the safest, most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in the city. Not to mention, the elaborate architecture, palaces, etc. are some of the most impressive in the entire country.

Restaurants and Eating Out

As you can imagine, Madrid has some of the best food in the world. Let’s go ahead and look at some of the city’s top restaurants and eateries.

Saddle – Saddle is absolutely an artistic experience. It’s high-class, very elegant, yet intimate rather than stuffy. By combining modern-day with classic techniques, you’ll find this place to be refined yet varied. All on one floor, you’ll find private rooms and an expansive dining room with beautiful views.

Cruz Blanca de Vallecas – Consistently award-winning, Cruz Blanca de Vallecas offers Spanish food, placing tradition at the forefront of the operation. With international standards, this restaurant es made to make you feel like you’re coming home. Just make sure you book far in advance, as it can be booked up to 3 months at times!

Casa Benigna – If you go to Spain, you have to try paella. It’s just an unspoken rule. For excellent paella, make sure you head to Casa Benigna . The rice-based dish features arroz negro, squid ink, beans, meat, and more.

El Cisne Azul – Located in Chueca, El Cisne Azul is known for their wild mushrooms, with dishes that incorporate them like grilled boletus with foie gras and mushroom carpaccio. If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, you’re in the clear, as they also offer grilled meats and other dishes.

El Meson del Boqueron – El Meson del Boqueron offers basically the best callos a la madrileña we’ve had. With tripe, morcilla, and chorizo, it’s definitely packed with flavor and is perfect for any kind of weather. The restaurant itself is very captivating, with a kind of gothic flair that makes it look like it’s been around for hundreds of years.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Nightlife in Madrid is booming, and you can find everything from a flamenco club to massive electronic music raves.

Fabrik – If you’re looking for said rave, head to Fabrik. This two-floor club has a whopping 7,000-person capacity and a beautiful sound system to accommodate their world-famous DJs. Kapital is located in El Centro, and is legendary throughout all of Europe. The enormous club features 7 floors – each with a different theme. Goya Social Club is a nice alternative if you aren’t ready for 7 floors of partying. It has a capacity of just 200 people, though the more intimate environment is perfect for its house, deep house, tech house, and sometimes techno artists.

Get out of your comfort zone and into a tablao , or flamenco bar. Here, you can see or even participate in dancing flamenco while enjoying some delicious eats and fine drinks. Corral de la Moreria is our top pick, and is one of the oldest tablaos around. Torres Bermejas is another hot choice, with their traditional cuisine and famous flamenco.

For innovative cocktails, look no further than Salmon Guru . It has an interesting name, but even more interesting drinks. The neon décor is very flashy and fun for taking photos. Diego Cabrera owns this one along with Viva Madrid : another one of our favorites. Viva Madrid has an almost opposite take on Salmon Guru, being a historic tavern with classic cocktails. Varsovia Cocktail & Bar is charming, and one of the top picks for a good vermouth and tapas.

No matter where you go in Madrid, you’ll likely be able to find many pretty, outdoor bars and cafes, karaoke bars, and live music.

While many people may think that Madrid is constantly warm, this is not the case at all. Their summers are typically pretty short, hot (around 99 degrees Fahrenheit), and dry. This is great if you aren’t a fan of humidity. However, the wintertime can get very cold and cloudy, dipping down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit at times! Try visiting from late June to late August for the best weather – just remember that most other European countries also have vacation from school at this time and things can get crowded.

Attractions

If you enjoy Mother Nature and serene little getaways, you’ll love Buen Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace. El Parque del Retiro is filled with lush flora, and is preened and maintained wonderfully. Covering over 140 hectares, it will originally made for the Count Duke of Olivares back in the 17 th century! El Palacio de Cristal consists of cast iron and glass, and sits in front of a flowing fountain and reflecting pool. Parques and fountains are plentiful in Madrid however, so you can really take your pick.

Aside from the Prado Museum , Madrid has many other architectural stunners like the Royal Palace and Gardens. Drawing many similarities to Paris Versailles, this palace is still used as the official residence of the king of Spain. Here, you can also catch some artwork by Velazquez, Goya, El Greco, and the rest of the crew. However, all kinds of palaces and interesting architecture covers Madrid.

If you’re a history buff, you have to head over to Puerta del Sol, which is where the old city gate stood. It’s been the center of many important events throughout history, such as the Spanish resistance to Napoleon back in the early 1800’s, and in 1931 when the Second Republic was proclaimed! Today, it has all kinds of fun shops and trendy cafes. If you like wine then be sure to do a wine tasting tour while you are in Madrid .

Once you arrive to your destination, try and walk as much as you can (within reason). Obviously, this is counting on your area being safe to walk around, which all of the neighborhoods we’ve mentioned are. This is the best way to get a feel for the city, and you can see everything up close. Plus, if you ever get tired, Madrid has an excellent public transportation system to help you out.

Try to at least learn Spanish basics. There are tons of great channels on YouTube, and Duolingo is a handy little app to have. If you practice just a few weeks before you go, you should at least be able to speak what’s required.

Make sure to check the restaurants’ meal times, as Spanish meal times are quite a bit different from ours. Lunch usually starts around 2pm, and dinner is served around 9, which is pretty late by most of our standards.

How to spend a soulful Spanish weekend in Madrid

W ith dazzling light and bright blue skies for much of the year, Madrid would be an energising city even without the world-class museums and the buzzing nightlife. The centre has smartened itself up, too, with new boutiques, delis, cafés and gastrobars opening every week, but it is the traditional tapas bars and tiny shops that are the real soul of the city. Wherever you stay, you can usually walk to the major museums, such as the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia, which all have astounding collections, but what will make you smile long after you’ve left is the little things you discover along the way as you stroll through the different neighbourhoods.

Madrid is all about spontaneity and even the best-laid plans tend to get forgotten after a couple of days as you slip into the swing of the city. Don’t feel guilty about abandoning your cultural agenda, it just means you’re behaving like a true Madrileño.

For further inspiration, see our guides to the city's best hotels , restaurants , bars , tapas , nightlife , shops , attractions and things to do for free .

How to spend your weekend, insider tips.

When should I visit Madrid?

Where to stay in Madrid

What to bring home

Essential information: what to know before you go

Day one: Morning

Kickstart your system with a traditional breakfast of churro fritters dipped into gloopy hot chocolate at Chocolatería San Ginés , which has been keeping Madrilenians carbed up since 1894. You may well have to queue but service is quick.

Cut down to Calle Arenal, turn right and immediately left up Calle Maestro Victoria, which leads to the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales . Originally a palace, the convent was founded in the mid-16th century by Juana, King Felipe II’s sister. It is still home to a small community of nuns and contains an extraordinarily rich collection of art and tapestries.

Walk down Calle San Martín and along Calle Bordadores to to the Plaza Mayor to soak up 400 years of history. Framed by red-brick buildings and slate turrets, the square is no longer the central hub of city life but is used for all sorts of events. Traditional bars and shops line the arcades and there are plenty of terraces for a drink and some tapas (check your bill and your change as this is obviously a real tourist hotspot).

Dive into the adjacent Mercado de San Miguel  for a quick bite. Madrid’s first gourmet market continues to go from strength to strength and attracts Michelin-starred chefs, including Rodrigo de la Calle’s paella stall and Jordi Roca’s Rocambolesc ice-cream outlet.

Wander down the Calle Mayor to the Puerta del Sol square and look out for the 'kilometre zero' plaque on the pavement in front of the Casa de Correos (now the headquarters of the regional government), which marks the official centre of Spain. Take a photo next to the statue of a bear jumping up at an arbutus tree, which is the symbol of Madrid. For more recommendations on the best free things to do, see our guide .

Have a mooch around the shops as you walk up Calle Preciados to the Gran Vía, the avenue that cuts through the city and was built in the first half of the 20th century – look up at the domes on the rooftops.

In the early evening, get right into the Madrid vibe by taking a tapas tour around the most traditional neighbourhoods, learning a bit of history and how to order in busy bars as you go. Try  Devour Tours , as they focus on family-run places and offer a variety of routes, taking in the oldest taverns (such as Casa Botín ), modern gastrobars and speciality food shops. For more tapas recommendations, see our  guide .

With its maroon wooden façade, marble tables and red velvet banquettes, Café Central , just off Plaza de Santa Ana, is a much-loved institution that is popular with all ages and gets packed for the jazz and blues concerts that happen every night at 8pm and 10pm.

Afterwards, walk across the square to  Salmon Guru , a buzzy cocktail bar run by top mixologist Diego Cabrera. The design veers from vintage New York bar to Pop Art in a series of spaces. Choose from classic cocktails such as an Old Fashioned, or go for something more experimental – the expert bartenders are only too happy to advise you or mix your favourite combo. For more recommendations on the best bars, see our guide .

Day two: Morning

Book online in advance to get into the Prado  when it opens at 10am – you are going to need all morning just to see the highlights, including the best Velázquez and Goya collections in the world and works by Bosch, El Greco, Zurbarán, Rubens, Raphael and Titian. For more recommendations on the best things to do in Madrid, see our guide

On the hill behind the Prado, Murillo Café  has terrace tables and is a handy spot for lunch. A bloody Mary and a plate of huevos rotos – fried eggs broken over chips with slivers of ibérico ham – should set you up for the afternoon.

Continue up the hill to get to the Retiro Park , where Madrileños go to stroll, drink coffee at outdoor cafés and row boats. The monument to Alfonso XII, which presides the lake, has an observation deck with panoramic views.

From the park, walk down to the Reina Sofía Museum . The huge contemporary art museum, housed in an 18th-century hospital, is home to Pablo Picasso's great masterpiece, Guernica, as well as works by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró and Juan Gris.

Within the museum, Arzábal and Nubel are both great for a drink or dinner. Or walk 10 minutes to Bodega de los Secretos , a romantic restaurant in underground wine cellars with arched booths where you can feast on modern Spanish dishes, such as oxtail roll and rice with prawns, squid and octopus. For more restaurant recommendations, see our guide .

From the restaurant, meander through the atmospheric lanes of the Barrio de las Letras to Santos y Desamparados , where crucifixes adorn the black walls and they take the business of making cocktails very seriously indeed. It is a favourite with actors, artists and writers, so look out for famous faces lurking in the darkness.

Walk up to the adjacent Calle Huertas, where there are lots of bars such as La Trocha  and Caracortada . If you feel like dancing, walk to nearby Teatro Kapital , a wildly popular club in a former theatre that sprawls over seven galleried floors with a different vibe on each level. For more nightlife recommendations, see our guide .

If you are planning on visiting the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, save 20 per cent with the Paseo del Arte combined ticket.

Attractions

The Real Madrid stadium tour  is having to change the itinerary periodically while extensive remodelling work is underway, so check beforehand if there is something you particularly want to see in case it is not open to the public when you visit.

Neighbourhood watch

Calle Ponzano in the Chamberí neighbourhood is lined with cool tapas bars. Try Sala de Despiece and Taverna Averías .

There is no need to stay at the hip 7 Islas Hotel in Malasaña to try the surprising cocktails in the bar. Go for a gin-based cocktail – the spirit is distilled in-house.

Did you know?

Madrid operates on its own terms and some things happen two hours later than you might expect: locals have lunch at 2pm and dinner at 10pm. The tradition of having a vermouth before lunch has had quite the renaissance in the last decade. Try Bodegas Ricla which has it on draught, or Taberna de Ángel Sierra , featured in Pedro Almodóvar’s films The Flower of My Secret and Parallel Mothers.

Although it is cold in winter, there are usually a lot of bright, sunny days and it is often warm enough to sit outside during the day. Just remember your hat and gloves. The weather is best in spring and autumn. Cultural and street festivals are under way for most of May. It is usually uncomfortably hot for much of July and August, so if you want to go then, it is a really good idea to book a hotel with a pool. Then you can spend the mornings in air-conditioned museums and shops, swim and sunbathe all afternoon, and sit at outdoor cafés and restaurants after the sun has gone down.

Where to stay

Luxury living.

The  Gran Hotel Inglés  is a discreet, luxurious haven right in the middle of the city with stylish Art Deco design, sumptuous rooms, a quietly excellent restaurant and a superb spa.

Boutique Bolthole

You feel like you are sleeping in an art gallery at The Pavilions Madrid . This elegant boutique hotel is a favourite of regular Madrid visitors, particularly from the creative industries, given its handy yet non-touristy location (just off Plaza de Colón) and well-designed rooms.

Budget Beauty

The fun, no-frills Generator Hostel Madrid is just off the Gran Vía, 700 yards from the Puerta del Sol. The cool bars and boutiques of Malasaña and Chueca are a five-minute walk away. There are plenty of double rooms as well as dorms, industrial design, a groovy rooftop bar and a friendly vibe.

Casa Hernanz has been selling handmade espadrilles since 1840. Behind the long wooden counter, shelves are stacked with every conceivable style from the traditional flat version to wedges with ribbons.

The  Real Fábrica Española  shop is a treasure trove of gorgeous things that are made in Spain. Snap up baskets, scarves, olive oil, kitchenware and lots more.

Milan Cathedral, Duomo di Milano, one of the largest churches in the world

While Milan is well known as a global fashion and design hub, it’s also one of the most exciting art cities in the world and art could easily keep any visitor fully occupied for days. Here are some of the best art museums to visit, highlights in each, along with suggestions of where to stay and eat.

Lucio Fontana masterpiece at Gallerie d'Italia Museum in Milan, Italy.

For starters, if you stay at the sumptious Hotel Principe di Savoia , you can enjoy one of the best art tours in the city. Fontana – Slashing Space walking tour has been exclusively created for guests of the hotel, part of the Dorchester Collection which offers special art tours in its other hotels too. At Le Meurice in Paris, guests can choose from art tours on Picasso, Rodin or Monet while 45 Park Lane features British sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The focus of the art tour in Milan is Lucio Fontana, one of Italy’s most revolutionary modern artists, known best for his slashed canvases. Art historian Olimpia Isidori has created a fascinating tour tracing Fontana’s story from his move to Milan as a child from Argentina, his studies at Brera Academy and his ultimate rejection of his prestigious Art Academy education to forge his own path. The tour includes a stop at a cafe frequented by Fontana, the art supply shop where he got his materials and a walk through the Brera Academy, where he studied in the late 1920s under the symbolist sculptor Adolfo Wildt. Fontana was the first known artist to slash his canvases – which he said symbolised an utter rejection of all art theory.

Prada Foundation, Milan

Continuing with modern art, Fondazione Prada is one of the most beautiful museums in Milan (designed by Rem Koolhaus). The current exhibition features Pino Pascali (on until 23 September 2024), an artist who is not so well known outside of Italy. It is a stupendous retrospective by an artist who had a very short career (he died tragically in 1968 in a motorcycle accident at the age of 32). Considered to be part of the Italian Arte Povera (Italian: literally “poor art”) movement that took place between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, Pascali was hugely influential, and this retrospective demonstrates why. Curated by Mark Godfrey, the show includes 49 works drawn from Italian and international museums, and private collections. Taking place over three buildings in the museum, this is a must see.

Nari Ward installation at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan

Pirelli HangarBicocca , which used to be a Pirelli tire factory, was converted into 10,900 square metres of exhibition galleries in 2012. Currently on show is Nari Ward, the Jamaican born American artist, who has recreated his installation Super Stud which he first made in 1994. Running until 28 July 2024, it is an enormous installation (in an enormous hangar), and features vast, colorful stringed nets suspended overhead, walls of discarded wooden pallets, bits and pieces of buildings, broken pianos, and curtains made of bottles and Budweiser cans. It is a cacophonous work using raw, found and ready-made material, that reminds us of the Arte Povera ideas you can see in Pino Pascali’s work.

'The seven heavenly palaces' by Anselm Kiefer is displayed at the Hangar Bicocca Contemporary Art ... [+] Museum in Milan, Italy.

One of the big draws at HangarBicocca is a permanent installation by the German artist Anselm Kiefer: a gasp out loud kind of work. It was created as a temporary work for the opening of the museum in 2004 but was so beloved by the Milanese that they decided to make it permanent. It consists of seven towers - each weighing 90 tons and rising to heights of between 13 and 19 meters, created from reinforced concrete using shipping containers. The towers symbolise the mystical experience of the ascent through the seven levels of spirituality in the ancient Hebrew Book of Palaces/ Sanctuaries , which dates back to the 4th-5th centuries A.D. Art can sometimes be overwhelming and sometimes, it is supposed to overwhelm. Art can also make one feel small, and again, it is sometimes meant to. Kiefer’s work at HangarBicocca does both those things, with a truly monumental work that is of Biblical proportions.

Apple iPhone 16 New Design And Performance Upgrades Revealed In Leak

Apple confirms widespread iphone changes coming to millions of ipads, sony is making a truly terrible mistake with helldivers 2, classical art.

Milan, Pinacoteca Di Brera, The Marriage of the Virgin, 1504, by Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520), oil on ... [+] panel.

The Brera museum is the largest classical art museum in Milan, whose highlights include The Lamentation of Christ (1480) by Andrea Mantegna, with its famously extreme foreshortening, and a sublime Raphael, Marriage of the Virgin (1504), which places the architectural perspective (a new Renaissance trick) to the forefront leaving poor Mary and Joseph as just bit-players. There is also Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus (1605-6), a masterful demonstration of chiaroscuro and flailing hands, a later copy (by Caravaggio) of the one in London’s National Gallery.

Caravaggio 'Basket of Fruit' at Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, Milan

And speaking of Caravaggio, the bad boy of the art world can be found in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a less visited museum than the Brera but with just as many iconic works, we find his Basket of Fruit (1599), considered one of the first examples of still life in European painting. The hyper-realistic basket seems to teeter on the edge of the picture-space, in danger of falling out of the painting and into the viewer's space instead.

The other great masterpiece here is the largest Renaissance cartoon that has survived to this day and was made by Raphael as a preparatory work for his work The School of Athens (1509-11) in the Vatican.

Finally, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (your ticket gets you into both) houses the most extensive collection of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks, the Codex Atlanticus . A rare chance to see his notebooks close-up on display. And don’t miss Leonardo’s rather lovely portrait of a musician (c. 1483–1487) tucked away in the basement!

The Last Supper

'The Last Supper', 1494-1498 at the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan

One can’t do an art visit to Milan without seeing one of the most famous paintings in the world, da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples . On the wall of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the mural was commissioned as part of a scheme of renovations to the church and its convent buildings by da Vinci's patron Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. Although you can try to book tickets on the museum’s website, they are sold out months in advance. A better option is to book a tour with one of the numerous guides, thus securing access. A good choice is the tour company, Get Your Guide , who offer a Milan Guided Walking Tour plus Last Supper Visit.

How Paris’s Dining, Hotel, and Art Scenes Got Their Groove Back—Just in Time for the Olympics

The french capital's cultural life was already on the upswing. mix in a major global event, and it's now ready to go toe to toe with any city in the world., by vivian song.

If all goes according to plan when the Summer Olympics alight in Paris this July, the opening ceremony will play out like a Hollywood epic: Timed to coincide with the sinking of the sun, an open-air flotilla of boats will ferry the athlete delegations on the Seine, sailing toward the sunset as hundreds of thousands of spectators cheer from either side of the river’s banks and the bridges above, all bathed in the amber afterglow.

It will mark the first time the ceremony will be held outside a stadium, let alone on a waterway. So, too, many of the events themselves, instead of being mounted in mostly generic stadiums on the outskirts of the city, will take place in the heart of Paris, reframing the French capital in a way that locals and visitors alike have never experienced—and that’s sure to dial up the promise of pageantry and emotion.

Café life in Saint-Germain-des-Prés; the Right Bank’s Golden Triangle has seen a recent revival.

The Eiffel Tower’s latticed silhouette will serve as the backdrop for beach volleyball at Champs-de-Mars. Place de la Concorde, where more than a thousand people (including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette) had their heads lopped off during the French Revolution, will be the site of newly admitted Olympic sports such as skateboarding and breaking, a.k.a. breakdancing. And though Olympic swimmers have raced in pools since 1908, this year’s athletes are slated to compete in the river itself. (Competitions will also take place in cities across France, from Lyon to Marseille, and Tahiti in French Polynesia will host the surfing event.)

In the food world, those doldrums translated into controversial snubs from the influential World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, known for flushing out avant-garde chefs. The French Michelin guide, once considered the ultimate arbiter of fine dining, suddenly seemed staid and irrelevant. London and Berlin took Europe’s center stage in art and design. Even President Emmanuel Macron described his fellow countrymen as resistant to change, much of the ire of those fellow countrymen—and countrywomen.

There’s a social and cultural diversity here, and for me this is really important. If Paris was just the 6th arrondissement, it would be boring.

But influential creatives and Parisians say that in the years leading up to the Games, and particularly since the pandemic, something has shifted. “I really think that during the last 10 years, Paris opened itself to more new things, for different trends,” says Hélène Darroze, the acclaimed chef whose six restaurants include Michelin two-star Marsan in Paris and her three-star namesake at the Connaught in London. “Paris is happier than before, more joyful than before.”

There’s a giddy sense of anticipation, says the illustrator Marin Montagut , who has collaborated with Le Bon Marché and the Ritz Paris and owns an eponymous boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés where he sells hand-painted glassware and porcelain decor. “It feels like Paris is trying to look very, very pretty for a very important evening. She’s been getting some plastic surgery and is trying to get ready in time,” he says with a chuckle. “There’s just a lot of effervescence in the city.”

The Right Bank’s Golden Triangle has seen a recent revival.

For better or for worse, some of the credit for that renewed vitality belongs to the light-as-soufflé Netflix series Emily in Paris, which quickly became the collective escapist fantasy for viewers around the world who were grounded by the Covid-19 virus. Another part of that newfound energy, though, can be traced to the frenzied building of luxury hotels, restaurants, galleries, museums, and boutiques over the past few years, including Montagut’s own Paris-themed shop, which he opened in 2020.

In parallel with the growth of traditional hotels, new players in the luxury rental market are emerging, joining the likes of Le Collectionist and Belles Demeures . Founded in 2020, Highstay rents out luxury serviced apartments equipped with kitchens and living spaces. The firm’s current portfolio includes 32 apartments in areas such as the Champs-Elysées and Saint-Honoré, and another 34 are under construction—all of which it owns. There is no check-in (guests are sent digital access codes), and all concierge requests, including housekeeping and travel reservations, are made via live chat on a dedicated guest portal.

“The goal is that guests get the real Parisian experience and feel like an insider, like a city dweller,” says general director Maxime Lallement.

The idea of making Paris as welcoming as a second home is also what drives the luxury real-estate market for foreign buyers, particularly Americans, says Alexander Kraft, CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty France-Monaco. He sees 2024 as a “transition year” and says that the local market is moving at two different speeds: While demand for properties between roughly $1 million and $5.5 million has cooled, high-end properties between about $11 million and $55 million continue to sell fast among buyers from the Middle East. Kraft predicts the market will pick up in 2025 following the U.S. presidential election.

Montreal-born, New York–based interior designer Garrow Kedigian is one of those frequent visitors who decided to take the leap and buy his own pied-à-terre in Paris a few years ago, after a lifetime of traveling back and forth for both work and pleasure.

As a part-time resident, Kedigian says he, too, has noticed a palpable shift in the city’s vibe, which he attributes to a renewed appreciation for tourists following their absence during the pandemic, as well as an “international flair” that has given the city a fresh spark.

“There’s a lot more cultural diversity than there was before,” he says. “In that respect it’s a bit like New York. And I think that now the interface between Paris’s unique flavor and the international populace is a little bit smoother.”

For Montagut, one of the best examples of this synergy can be found in Belleville, in the city’s east end, where independent artists, musicians, and other urban creatives rub shoulders in Chinese, African, and Arab restaurants and businesses.

“There’s a social and cultural diversity here, and for me this is really important,” Montagut says. “If Paris was just the 6th arrondissement, it would be boring.”

The eastern edge of Paris is also one of the preferred neighborhoods of Michael Schwartz, the marketing and communications manager for Europe at French jewelry house Boucheron. A recent New York City transplant, he is drawn to the burgeoning number of gastronomic gems far from the madding tourist crowds.

A view over the rooftops to the Eiffel Tower.

He points to sister restaurants Caché and Amagat (the names mean “hidden” in French and Catalan, respectively), discreetly located at the end of a cobblestoned cul-de-sac, as favorites. With backgrounds in fashion and advertising, the Italian duo who run them have attracted equally fashionable locals to this hitherto quiet part of town. Caché serves up fresh Mediterranean seafood dishes, while next door, Amagat specializes in Catalan tapas.

“This is a really special restaurant,” says Schwartz. “It’s frequented by really cool creatives, designers, and musicians, and it’s kind of a destination restaurant for most people because it’s not central.”

What makes Paris’s dining scene so exciting now, according to Stéphane Bréhier, editor in chief of French restaurant guide Gault & Millau , is a sense of fearlessness among younger chefs who reject the traditional trajectory that begins with a lowly stage in a Michelin-star kitchen. What’s more, visitors are likewise foregoing Michelin establishments in favor of newer, more experimental dining spots.

“Over the last few years, there’s been a pro-fusion of young chefs who don’t want to work for other people and are daring to set up their own shop,” Bréhier says. “The gastronomic scene is booming in Paris.”

At work in La Tour d’Argent’s kitchen

These bold, emerging chefs feel less bound not only to their elders but also to French cuisine itself. “It has changed a lot,” says Darroze, who opened Marsan, her first Parisian restaurant, 25 years ago. “The new generation traveled a lot—in South America, for example, in Asia—before opening a restaurant or being a head chef somewhere. They opened themselves to other cultures. This is why the culinary scene at the moment is very interesting in Paris: Because it’s a mix of very famous chefs with Michelin stars but also young chefs who don’t care about Michelin stars—they just want to explore so many fields.

The ever-growing importance of social media and its insatiable hunger for envy-inducing images is driving another major trend in the dining scene: rooftop spots, including Mun and Girafe in the Golden Triangle, the area bordered by avenues Montaigne and George V and the Champs-Elysées. “A lot of rooftops have opened in Paris, where before they were pretty much nonexistent apart from the Eiffel Tower and the Montparnasse Tower,” says Dimitri Ruiz, head concierge at Hotel Barrière Fouquet’s Paris on the Champs-Elysées.

Paris’s venerated fashion industry has also found ways to innovate, with fresh faces keeping their fellow couturiers on their toes and the shopping options enticing. In 2022, for example, Simon Porte Jacquemus opened his first boutique in the city on avenue Montaigne—home to Gucci , Chanel , and Prada , among other venerable names—and in March, at the age of 34, became France’s youngest fashion designer to be named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the field. That kind of success has a ripple effect in the creative community.

“Almost every street has the name of an artist or a politician,” says Charaf Tajer, the Parisian-born creative director behind the London-based Casablanca sportswear line. “So the city reminds me always that the people who came before me, who walked those streets, created the future in a way. As much as [Paris] seems stuck in time visually, you can also feel the energy of people creating the present.”

Interior designer David Jimenez , whose 2022 book Parisian by Design compiles his Francophile projects, moved to the city in 2015 and spent his first few years living near the Champs-Elysées, which he says has undergone a noticeable revival. Along with Jacquemus’s arrival, new luxury openings or expansions—including Burberry , Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, and Panerai—and city-led greening efforts are bringing Parisians back to the 8th arrondissement, long dismissed as an overcrowded tourist trap where fast-food and fast-fashion chains had colonized the once glamorously luxe avenue. Now, Dior ’s captivating Peter Marino–designed museum draws legions of fans, while the city has been busy planting more trees, renovating gardens, and repairing damaged sidewalks as part of a long-term embellishment plan. And on the first Sunday of every month, the entire length of the Champs-Elysées becomes a pedestrian-only promenade.

Jardins du Luxembourg is a perennially popular Left Bank locale for sitting or strolling.

The thriving fashion houses are responsible for more than maintaining the city’s unparalleled reputation for chic. To a large degree, they have also helped revive its status as an art capital. The billions generated by LVMH (parent of Louis Vuitton , Dior, and Berluti , among others) and Kering (Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, et al.) funded the extraordinary contemporary art collections amassed by their founders, Bernard Arnault and François Pinault, respectively. The rivals rewarded their hometown with two museums, Fondation Louis Vuitton and Bourse de Commerce , that have helped make it a leader in contemporary art.

As much as [Paris] seems stuck in time visually, you can also feel the energy of people creating the present.

Also lending a hand: Brexit, which persuaded many international galleries to brush up on their French. One of the most talked-about recent additions is the powerhouse Hauser & Wirth, which opened in a 19th-century hôtel particulier near the Champs-Elysées last year. David Zwirner arrived in 2019, Mariane Ibrahim in 2021, and Peter Kilchmann the following year, all joining long-established Parisian galleries including Perrotin and Thaddaeus Ropac. The City of Light even snagged its own coveted annual installment of Art Basel: Paris+ , which now runs every October in the Grand Palais.

“Quite frankly, Paris has been putting up some of the most incredible exhibitions in institutions in Europe,” says Serena Cattaneo Adorno, senior director at Gagosian. “And a lot of private collectors have also decided to open spaces in the city, creating a great dynamic between public and private galleries.”

The always-savvy Gagosian, on rue Ponthieu, has hit upon an authentic tie-in with the Games: a summer exhibition featuring Olympic posters created over the years by celebrated artists from Picasso on up to Warhol, Hockney, and Tracey Emin. “Once you start digging, you find that a lot of artists have reflected on sports and the engagement of the body,” Cattaneo Adorno says. “It’s just a really pure and beautiful message about how art and sports have dialogues that can be somewhat surprising.”

A few months out from the festivities on the Seine, interior decorator Jimenez sums up the mood of many locals, saying (only half-jokingly), “I think for most Parisians, there’s a sense of curiosity, optimism, excitement—and an exit plan, in that order.”

“I want to be part of the excitement. I want to see as much as I can and be energized by this very special and unique moment,” he says. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am deeply grateful to be able to experience it first-hand as an American living in Paris.”
