Cue the wanderlust: 10 dreamiest European river cruises

R iver cruising has taken me to some of the most spell-binding places I’ve ever visited in Europe. Storybook architecture, castles, and bucolic landscapes are sprinkled like pixie dust along the region’s waterways. You can walk right off your ship and find yourself in a fairytale.

Carrying only 100 to 200 passengers on average (some even less), river ships offer one of the most intimate styles of cruising. Their more inclusive pricing models complement easygoing, “explore at your own pace” itineraries—and most lines give you at least one free tour—making it all about the destination. Many European rivers also flow through multiple countries, so you can experience a wide range of scenery, cultures, and adventures in one trip.

SEE THE WORLD: Best companies for guided tours

I’ve combed through all the major river cruise lines’ itineraries to handpick the most wanderlust-worthy routes. Dream big with these 10 cruises that give you access to some of the most magical cities and small villages in Europe.

Note: Though often grouped together with river cruising, barge cruising is an entirely different ball game. Barge ships have much smaller passenger counts (think less than 10 passengers) and don’t include as many amenities as river ships. For this article, my focus will be river cruising.

1. Germany’s Rhine River Valley

River cruise line: amawaterways.

Itinerary: Rhine and Moselle Fairytales

Using the Rhine River and its tributary, the Moselle, to reach more remote areas, AmaWaterways has curated the ultimate fairytale itinerary. Its Rhine and Moselle Fairytales cruise is peppered with some of the region’s most winsome villages. Half-timber houses, old stone bridges, and storied castles conjure up images of storybooks from childhood. The magic only grows as you head into Germany’s Black Forest and close to the Swiss Alps.

SAVOR AND SIP: Our top picks for European wine tours

2. Paris and the Seine River

River cruise line: a-rosa.

Itinerary: Seine Experience Normandy with Paris

Napoleon Bonaparte once said “Secrets travel fast in Paris.” The magic of a Seine River cruise is no secret, but the Seine Experience Normandy with Paris itinerary from “city-nature-gourmet-active-adventure-wellness-romance-family cruise” line A-Rosa holds some of its own. Each bridge tells a story, and every village you pass on your way to Normandy—including Les Andelys and Rouen—begs for you to get a little lost in its mystical alleyways. It’s no wonder so many famous artists documented life along the Seine in their work.

FRENCH HOLIDAY: These France tours really stand out

3. Portugal’s Douro River

River cruise line: scenic.

Itinerary: Delightful Douro with Lisbon

Portugal river cruises continue to grow in popularity, and for good reason: the Douro Valley is just as breathtaking as it is rich in ancient traditions. The Delightful Douro with Lisbon itinerary from ultra-luxury cruise line Scenic offers different ways to experience the region, with active, moderate, and relaxed options for its all-inclusive excursions. From Pinhao, with its traditional Portuguese tile murals, to Lisbon and Sintra, one of Europe’s most fabled, fairytale villages, this cruise is a feast for the senses.

4. The South of France

River cruise line: emerald cruises.

Itinerary: Aix-en-Provence with Sensations of Lyon and Provence

Pastel facades and fields of lavender and poppies meld with Roman ruins and Medieval stone villages in the South of France. The Aix-en-Provence with Sensations of Lyon and Provence itinerary from Emerald Cruises serves up a memorable taste of all the region’s glory. Munch on some calissons (Provencal candies) while you wander at a slower pace. Keep your eyes peeled, and you’re bound to run into landscapes straight out of a Vincent Van Gogh painting.

5. The Netherlands and Belgium

River cruise line: viking river cruises.

Itinerary: Tulips and Windmills

As the name of the itinerary implies, Tulips and Windmills from Viking River Cruises makes the most of the charms of Belgium and the Netherlands during the blooming season. Much of your time will be spent in Amsterdam, but the Dutch countryside has its fair share of storybook hamlets to relish, too. Highlights include the villages of Kinderdijk and Veere, as well as Enkhuizen, which even has its own fairytale-inspired attraction called Sprookjeswonderland.

6. German Christmas Markets

River cruise line: uniworld boutique river cruises.

Itinerary: Classic Christmas Markets

It’s hard to match the magic of a European river cruise during Christmas time, when cities and towns are cozy and inviting with holiday markets. Uniworld sets itself apart from other lines with its Classic Christmas Markets cruise, with stops you typically don’t see. Wertheim, Kitzingen, and Rothenburg are local favorites for perusing handcrafted gifts with a hot mug of gluhwein in hand. These sought-after, storybook towns are all included on Uniworld’s itinerary.

HOLIDAY SPIRIT: Companies with the best European Christmas market tours

7. Loire Valley, France

River cruise line: croisieurope cruises.

Itinerary: Loire River Cruise

Some say the Loire Valley is home to France’s most fairytale-like scenery. Hallmarked by its chateaus and castles, the region was even the inspiration for a real fairytale: “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood,” by Charles Perrault. While some river cruise lines incorporate visits to the Loire Valley as supplemental packages, CroisiEurope is among only a few that have a ship specifically designed to sail the shallow Loire River. CroisiEurope’s Loire River cruises fully immerse you in the scenery that surrounds France’s last “wild river,” so you’ll never miss a view.

8. Oktoberfest in Germany

River cruise line: tauck.

Itinerary: Autumn Along the Rhine: Munich’s Oktoberfest

Fall foliage adds a splash of color to the Rhine’s storybook setting, where ancient castles, fortresses, and cathedrals collide. On the Autumn Along the Rhine: Munich’s Oktoberfest cruise from Tauck , passengers can savor it all—the scenery, the season, and the most authentic celebration of Oktoberfest. Tauck, which is known for its thoughtfully planned cultural experiences, makes this itinerary even more special with stops in France’s Alsace countryside and Switzerland’s enchanting Lucerne.

9. Eastern Europe to the Black Sea

River cruise line: grand circle cruise line.

Itinerary: Eastern Europe to the Black Sea

The Danube River is one of the most popular European river cruise itineraries, but many don’t venture far enough to reach the Black Sea. But that’s where its more unassuming beauty begins. From Budapest, Hungary, Grand Circle ’s cruise itinerary Eastern Europe to the Black Sea passes through Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. As you enter the Balkans, you’ll discover storybook scenery that still bears scars of its tumultuous recent history. The experience is equal parts awe-inspiring and humbling.

10. Bordeaux, France

River cruise line: avalon waterways.

Itinerary: Bonjour Bordeaux: Chateaux, Wineries, and Charming Villages

There’s much more to France’s Bordeaux region than wine, and Avalon Waterways ’ itinerary Bonjour Bordeaux: Chateaux, Wineries, and Charming Villages is the perfect way to make the most of it. The Garonne and Dordogne Rivers meander through rolling, pastoral hills full of hidden treasures. This route takes you beyond the vineyards to landmarks like the Chateau de la Brede castle and Medieval city of Saint-Emilion. The ship docks overnight in every port, too, leaving you with even more time to explore.

10 Best Rhine River Cruises

Sail past stunning castles, quaint towns, and vineyards on these Rhine River cruises.

avalon waterways grand france cruise

River cruising has grown in popularity in recent years, with new lines offering unique ways to experience Europe’s most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Douro, Seine, and, of course, the Rhine. “The Rhine River is famous for castles, cathedrals, historic sites, and medieval towns, offering majestic scenery as you travel through several European countries. You feel as if you’ve traveled back to a different time in our world,” Travel + Leisure A-list advisor Olga Placeres says.

On most Rhine River cruises, guests can explore on their terms, making this a great trip idea for multi-generational travel. From family-friendly trips to beer-focused itineraries to festive holiday cruises, here are 10 of the best Rhine River cruises for every type of traveler.

AmaWaterways

7-night Enchanting Rhine Cruise

Cruise expert Placeres named AmaWaterways one of her favorite river cruise lines. This family-owned and operated line offers all-inclusive river cruises with a range of shore excursions for both active and relaxed travelers. Several Rhine River cruises are available, and a few include the Moselle and Main Rivers. Christmas market cruises and wine-focused itineraries are also offered.

The Enchanting Rhine cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland, where passengers board their vessel (while the specific ship varies depending on the dates, all carry fewer than 170 guests). In Breisach, Germany, guests can choose a wine country bike tour, walking tour, or hike in the Black Forest. The cruise continues to Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Rüdesheim, with options each day for active or relaxed excursions. The scenic Rhine River Gorge area is a highlight, and there are visits to Cologne and Düsseldorf before arriving in Amsterdam.

Viking River Cruises

Courtesy of Viking River Cruises

11-day Rhine and Main Explorer Cruise

Placeres also recommends Viking Cruises, which was established by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and operates river, ocean, and expedition cruises across all seven continents. Viking’s Rhine River cruises range from eight to 15 days, and itineraries go beyond the Rhine to include the Main, Moselle, and a voyage that goes across the North Sea to Norway’s fjords.

The Rhine and Main Explorer begins in Nuremberg and continues to Bamberg for a walking tour through the winding streets of the medieval city. Cruise highlights include palace tours in Würzburg, local Bavarian culture and food in Marktheidenfeld, scenic sailing on the Main River, touring the charming French city of Strasbourg, and admiring Germany's famous Black Forest. The tour ends with two nights in Basel, where you can take a tour of the city and enjoy cheese fondue.

Adventures by Disney

8-day rhine river cruise.

Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, but they also offer adults-only (18+) experiences on Europe’s rivers. Instead of setting sail on a Disney Cruise Line mega ship, these itineraries use AmaWaterways river ships for a more intimate experience with a maximum of 156 guests. Travel writer Terry Ward took her six and seven year olds and her 18-year-old niece on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise in July. “I can confirm it’s a trip with total multigenerational appeal,” Ward says. “There were always multiple options for shore excursions — something to interest passengers across the board.”

“During a port of call in Germany’s Black Forest region, for example, we could choose a toboggan run through the forest with time spent carving wooden toys and learning to make butter, visiting Europa Park, or enjoying the medieval old town of Riquewihr.” Ward tells T+L, “On several nights, Disney’s Adventure Guides whisked the kids off to the lounge for their own fun — maybe a Disney movie and dinner or games — so the adults could try the chef’s tasting table or enjoy a quieter dinner. Teens had their own tables for dinner if they wished.” Ward added, “The Adventure Guides hailed from some of the countries we sailed through, so traveling with them in Europe felt a bit like being along for the ride with an in-the-know friend.”

Avalon Waterways

8-day Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts Cruise

After nearly a century in European tourism, the Globus family of brands launched Avalon Waterways in 2004, and it was ranked among the top river cruise lines in the world by T+L readers in 2024. Avalon’s Rhine River cruises range from five days to 11 days; several include the Moselle, and they offer seasonal Christmas market cruises.

The Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts cruise is a round-trip cruise from Amsterdam offered in the spring, with a beer expert on board to host lectures, beer tastings, and food and beer pairings. The ship heads to Rotterdam for a walking tour, bike ride, or a guided excursion to Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe” with over seven million tulips. In Antwerp and Ghent, guests can choose between bike or walking tours, while guided tours in Willemstad take guests among centuries-old buildings. In Amsterdam, guests can take a guided canal cruise followed by a Dutch beer experience.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Courtesy of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

8-day Rhine River Valley Cruise

Founded in 1976, Uniworld is a luxurious, all-inclusive cruise line that offers itineraries on Europe's famous rivers. Uniworld's Rhine River cruises start at eight days, but travelers with more time can combine the Danube, Main, and Rhine Rivers on a 25-day, eight-country cruise.

The eight-day Rhine River Valley cruise boards in Nuremberg and cruises to Bamberg where guests can choose a walking tour, nature park hike, or brewery tour. In Würzburg, an 18th-century palace tour or wine tasting are options; additional stops include Miltenberg, Mainz, Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, and Breisach, before disembarking in Basel.

8-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure Cruise

This century-old, family-owned company offers travel experiences in more than 100 destinations, ranging from small-group tours to river cruises. Tauck’s Rhine River cruise itineraries range from eight days to the 15-day Grand European Cruise that covers nine countries along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.

The eight-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure is a Tauck Bridges family cruise designed for guests of all ages. The cruise departs from Basel, and the next day, guests travel by rail to Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne to ride the world’s steepest cog-wheel train. In Strasbourg, there’s a French sing along and chocolate tasting. The family-focused fun continues at stops in Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, and Cologne before the ship reaches its final stop. In Amsterdam, guests can take a canal cruise, visit a windmill, or taste local cheeses.

8-day Rhine Christmas Markets Cruise

This Australian-founded company established in 1986 offers river cruises, ocean voyages, and expeditions to the polar regions. Billed as an ultra-luxury, five-star cruise line, Scenic offers special Rhine River itineraries that feature Christmas markets or focus on topics like wine and food.

The Rhine Christmas Markets cruise begins in Amsterdam with options of a walking, biking, or canal tour before setting off for Cologne, where guests can see the magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, visit a brewery, and browse the Christmas markets. In Baden-Baden, a famed German spa town, browse the markets or soak in thermal waters. Koblenz, Mannheim, and Strasbourg are additional stops on this holiday-themed itinerary.

Emerald Cruises

8-day Jewels of the Rhine Cruise

Emerald, founded in 2013, specializes in luxury river and yacht cruises. Emerald's Rhine River cruises include an eight-day voyage and an 11-day cruise that includes the Moselle.

The Jewels of the Rhine cruise starts with two nights in Amsterdam, where guests can take a bicycle tour or canal cruise before the captain’s dinner. Then, it's off to Cologne and the charming cities of Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Freiburg, where castles, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings await. The ship arrives in Basel for the end of the cruise the next day.

CroisiEurope

5-day Rhine in Flames Cruise

Founded in 1976 in France, CroisiEurope is the largest European-based river cruise line. The company also offers sea voyages and canal barge cruises. Their budget-friendly river cruises include some shore excursions, and Rhine River cruises vary in length from three days to two weeks or longer.

The five-day Rhine in Flames cruise boards in Strasbourg for a night of cruising. The next day in Rüdesheim, excursion options include a train ride to a wine cellar followed by a visit to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments or a gondola lift to the Niederwalddenkmal and vineyard hike. The next day is the main event as the ship sails towards Trechtingshausen for the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks show. The ship arrives in Mannheim for an optional visit to Heidelberg and later a gala evening before sailing back towards Strasbourg.

A-Rosa Cruises

6-day Rhine Legends Cruise

This German company has been cruising the Rhine River and its tributaries since 2009. The family-friendly line has a kids club and family suites with plenty of room to spread out. Their river cruises range from four to seven days, and there is a fee for most excursions.

The five-day Rhine Legends cruises the Middle Rhine round-trip from Cologne. In Rüdesheim, guests can tour the countryside on a bike or train tour. Stops in Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, and Koblenz provide more ways to explore the beautiful region, before the ship returns to Cologne for disembarkation.

AVALON WATERWAYS 15 Days | Grand France Northbound (WLP0)

PORT ST. LOUIS TO PARIS Day 1 | Port St. Louis, France. Embarkation. Welcome to the Provence! This afternoon board your river cruise vessel between 4 pm and 5 pm. Before dinner, meet your crew at a welcome reception and enjoy tranquil scenes as you gently sail through the Camargue Regional National Park northward to Arles. (D) Day 2 | Arles. On the northern tip of the Camargue, Arles is the capital of the Provence and was once known as the “Little Rome of Gaul.” See the church of St. Trophime; “Les Alyscamps,” the remains of the Gallo-Roman burial road; and visit the ROMAN AMPHITHEATER. Vincent Van Gogh was inspired by the special light of the Provence and spent a very productive year in Arles. The “Foundation Vincent Van Gogh” is a tribute to the artist. (B,L,D) Day 3 | Avignon. The fortified city of Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse region, the most picturesque part of Provence. Also referred to as the “City of Popes,” it was the center of the Catholic Church in the 14th century, and the city landscape is dominated by the grandiose PALACE OF THE POPES. A photo of the bridge of the popular song is a must, and optional outings to Pont du Gard or to the famed wine cellars of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are available this afternoon. (B,L,D) Day 4 | Cruising. Viviers. A leisurely morning on board to relax and enjoy the passing scenery as you glide gently by. The charming town of Viviers was developed around its ROMANESQUE CATHEDRAL, and the OLD TOWN has an appealing mix of Christian, Roman, and medieval influences. (B,L,D) Day 5 | Tournon/Tain l’Hermitage. Vienne. The twin cities of Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage lie nestled among vineyards between the River Rhône and the granite slopes of the Hermitage. Tournon, with its imposing 16th-century castle and Roman ruins, is one of France’s oldest medieval cities. This afternoon, enjoy Vienne, another charming little town surrounded by steep hills. (B,L,D) Day 6 | Lyon. Lyon is France’s second-largest city and its gastronomic capital. Founded by the Romans in 43 BC, the city’s prosperity dates back to the 16th century and is due to commercial, industrial and banking activities. Roman remains, many excellent museums, and much renaissance architecture delight the visitor. Survey the city from Fourvière Hill; explore the Old Town, a UNESCO World heritage site with its maze of medieval alleyways; Place des Terreaux, and beautiful Place Bellecour. Beaujolais is the wine of the region and wine connoisseurs will know that the grapes must be hand picked. Tradition dictates that the “Beaujolais Nouveau” is tasted for the first time on the third Thursday of November each year. (B,L,D) Day 7 | Mâcon. Tournus. Chalon-sur-Saône. Wake up this morning on the River Saône in Mâcon, a city that plays an important part in the wine trade. There’s some free time for exploring after breakfast, then enjoy a short cruise to Tournus. Here the cloister of St. Philibert or the Burgundy Museum’s folklore collection, located in an old family mansion, are worth a visit. A choice of optional excursions, including a visit to a wine cellar, is available. Before dinner, arrive in Chalon-sur-Saône. (B,L,D) Day 8 | Chalon-sur-Saône. Disembark. Beaune. Paris. Embark. After breakfast, say goodbye to your crew on the Avalon Scenery and head for Beaune, the unofficial capital of the Côte d’Or area, which produces the Burgundy region’s finest vintages. Its most famous historical site, the Hôtel-Dieu charity hospital, houses Van der Weyden’s painting of the Last Judgement and is one of France’s architectural highlights. After lunch, continue north past the forest of Fontainebleau to Paris, the “City of Light,” where you board the Avalon Creativity docked on the River Seine. This evening, meet your crew at a welcome reception. (B,D) Day 9 | Paris. Paris’ famous sights are living history. Your included city sightseeing shows you magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral, the unique Louvre Museum with its glass pyramid as a contrast to its ancient architecture, the commemorative Arc de Triomphe, Opéra, Madeleine, Champs Elysées, and the Eiffel Tower, a structural miracle of its age. The city is well known for its colorful nightlife, including some of the world’s most famous cabaret shows. (B,L,D) Day 10 | Paris. Conflans. After breakfast, enjoy a relaxing morning on the Sky Deck as your ship slips its moorings and glides gently down the River Seine, passing through suburban Paris. This afternoon, dock at Conflans—and now the choice is yours: either join our guided excursion to AUVERS-SUR-OISE, the quaint little town where Vincent Van Gogh lived and died, or Napoleon and Josephine’s CHÂTEAU de MALMAISON just outside Paris. Requiring extensive renovations, this large country estate was purchased by Josephine Bonaparte in 1799 while Napoleon was fighting in Egypt. It was her aim to make it “the most beautiful and curious garden in Europe, a model of good cultivation.” (B,L,D) Day 11 | Vernon. This morning, choose between a guided visit of Claude Monet’s house and stunning gardens at GIVERNY or a visit of BIZY CASTLE with its magnificent courtyard. There’s still time to stroll through this delightful city on your own before your ship departs for Rouen. Relax on board this afternoon or take in a pastry-making DEMONSTRATION. (B,L,D) Day 12 | Rouen. Rouen is the capital of Upper Normandy and an important commercial city. It is perhaps best known for its connection to Joan of Arc, who lived, was imprisoned, and burned at the stake in the marketplace of this town in 1431. Enjoy the guided walk through the medieval quarter with its half-timbered, glazed-tile houses, and the Gros Horloge, an intricate Astronomical Clock dating back to the 16th century. The splendid gothic CATHEDRAL was once the tallest building in the world and the subject of a series of Claude Monet’s paintings. The afternoon is free for you to explore on your own, or you can join an optional excursion to the pretty coastal town of Honfleur or to the busy port city of Le Havre with its contemporary architecture. (B,L,D) Day 13 | Rouen. Make your choice today between an included excursion to the historic NORMANDY LANDING BEACHES—with poignant sites such as Omaha Beach, the Pointe du Hoc monument, and the American Cemetery—or a “TASTE OF NORMANDY” for a more in-depth look at this picturesque, mainly agricultural region. The most important products are dairy, apples, and grain. Camembert cheese is a specialty, as is Calvados, a strong apple brandy. Thoroughbred horses are also reared here. (B,L,D) Day 14 | Les Andelys. The most dramatic sight along the Seine is imposing Château Gaillard at Les Andelys. Built by England’s King Richard the Lionheart in 1196, the château is truly a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Explore on your own and enjoy this last day in France in this delightful small town. (B,L,D) Day 15 | Paris. Disembark. Your vacation ends with breakfast this morning. Departure flights should not leave before 8 am. (B) NOTE: Itinerary is subject to change without notice. For the most up-to-date information, please refer to the itinerary schedule you receive with your final documents.
