Ambewela Farm

Located in the hill station known as Ambewela (also fondly called ‘Little New Zealand’) is the famous Ambewela Farm. About 17km away from Nuwara Eliya, the farm seems rather out of place compared to the rest of Sri Lanka.

Highlighting Features

Spanning 150 acres, Ambewela Farm is well-known across the island for its dairy products, even having its own line of products being sold all around the country at various markets. Here, the cows roam free, grazing on the green pastures of the farm, and the sky is almost always crystal blue. With wind turbines dotting the scenery in the distance, the peaceful farm is a great place to visit away from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

The Beginnings

The farm was actually started with the help of the New Zealand government sometime in the ‘60s, and aside from producing milk, yoghurt, cream, and cheese, the farm is also a popular destination in Nuwara Eliya for foreigners and locals alike.

Useful Information

The climate of the region can get rather cool, with annual temperatures capable of dropping below 17°C, but usually, it’s not too cold, but the crisp breezes are sure to lull you into a state of utter relaxation. The farm is usually open from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. every day, but it’s best to call and check if they’re open before you head on over there as they sometimes close down the farm for extended periods. The entrance ticket is about Rs. 100 per person, and you can purchase the farm’s products at an onsite outlet, so make sure to help yourself to some Sri Lankan cheese and yoghurt!

Useful Tips

  • The farm is open year-round from 8:30 am – 5:30 pm. However, check before your actual visit as it might be closed with no notice.
  • The farm is located 17km away from Nuwara Eliya and the most comfortable way to travel is by car.
  • This is a great activity to do with young kids as there are other animals like rabbits and goats as well

Ambewela Farm

Ambewela farm reviews.

Great place and great strawberry based foods. But parking is difficult and less slots.

Things have changed a lot since my last visit in 2013. However, I like the way it has improved.

It is great experience to see the farm and procedures of the maintenance of cows and collecting milk.

Ambewela Farm is one of the largest animal farms in Sri Lanka. Mainly they produce cow's milk items, goats items and rabbits etc. There is a restaurant and a cafe which you can buy snacks, fresh milk, yogurt and restaurant items inside the farm. Also you can watch live how they collect milk from cows.

The views around the farms are amazing and breath taking. Hard to breath inside the farms. So if you are sensitive to strong smells, avoid going indoors (in to the main feeding buildings) and enjoy the nature and walk around this beautiful landscape.

It is really better place to see farm animals with cool weather.fresh dairy foods available in the restaurant. Overall a good place for kids and family.

The environment is really nice. But there was nothing much to worth watching buying a ticket for Rs. 250. There was a huge crowd during our visit as it was a holiday. Only some cows, studs, calves, goats and rabbits could be seen in the farm, none of the production processes were not shown for the public. Price of a local ticket was Rs. 250 and for foreigners Rs. 500. There was a discounted price for school children. There is a huge parking where more than 100 vehicles could be parked. There is a long distance to walk to watch all the animals except cows. Better to take a cap. There are shops inside to buy Ambewela products and some fast food and beverages. These shops also accept credit cards. But the discounted prices of Ambewela products were almost ariund 5-10%

Abewala Farm is a renowned and captivating destination featuring New Zealand dairy cattle, rabbits, and goats. Its picturesque landscapes provide an escape from urban life, and the farm's commitment to ethical farming shines through its care for animals. Warm and knowledgeable staff enhance the experience, offering engaging activities and educational insights. Families can delight in interacting with friendly rabbits and goats, making lasting memories. Overall, Abewala Farm is a charming haven that combines nature's beauty with an educational and heartwarming farm experience.

Even though you can buy dairy products you cannot visit the farm due to covid situation these days.

One of the most beautiful places we went to for the weekend was the mind-blowing green cool breeze One of the most important and beautiful places in Sri Lanka is the best place to come with family "Ever Green Place in Sri Lanka! "

The climatic and economical conditions in Ambewela make it an ideal location for dairy farming, hence the country's only milk powder factory is situated in this area. The two animal husbandries, Ambewela Farm and New Zealand Farm, have Ayrshire cattle and Friesian cows respectively. The drive from Nuwaraeliya is scenic the travellers can drop by to have a cup of hot milk at the Cafe. Unfortunately due to covid the farm doesn't allow public to go inside and check out the cattle and dairy processing.

This is a place where you must visit if you are travelling with kids so they can learn a lot. You can see the wind mills beside this farm and they are used to generate electricity.

Location is great but unfortunately nowadays they are not allowed the guest to view the farm due to the Covid issue. However we can see the view of the farm and the cow from the road.

Before you can visit the factory. But it's closed these days due to Covid 19. But you can buy dairy products from factory outlets and enjoy the amazing lands views!

The people who travel through Nuwara Eli always set a trip location to this place. Specially as educational tours it is very important to get knowledge about the process of dairy products such as fresh milk, cheese etc. Thousands of cows, goats and rabbits are living in this massive area of the Ambewela Farm. There is a shop which sells dairy products that are made there own for reasonable prices.

You can visit the factory. But it's closed these days due to Covid 19. But you can buy dairy products from factory outlets.

The farm lies 18km from nuwaraeliya town. You have to purchase a ticket from the entrance. Locals tickt price is Rs. 100. There is a product outlet at the entrance. You can buy farm products from it. Nice environment. People can go in the sheds where huge stud bulls are kept, big rabbit breading areas, ashin & pishiean cow sheds and also you can visit the automated milking & cheese process of the farm. Wonderful & very cool place to visit. It is worth if you can visit with your kids as it helps to improve their knowledge. You have to travel by your own vehicle since there is no public transport to the farm. Love the scenic view around the farm.

Ambewela is a village, and a hill station, located in the Nuwara Eliya District of Sri Lanka. The area is also sometimes called "Little New Zealand". The town is situated approximately 17 km south-east of the district capital Nuwara Eliya. Ambewela is also a service center to the New Galway tea planting district. AMBEWELA MILK The Ambewela dairy brand was launched in 2004, with the vision of providing a premium quality dairy products to the Sri Lankan consumers and to contribute towards the development of the local dairy industry. Full Cream liquid milk (pure fresh milk) was introduced first under the Ambewela brand. Ambewela is produced using premium quality pure cow’s milk from Ambewela Farm. In the farms, milking is done under strict hygienic conditions, according to the best international dairy practices, resulting in only the purest quality fresh milk, conforming to highest international dairy standards. Ambewela Full Cream milk is UHT processed and aseptically packed, with a shelf life of six months at room temperature. Ambewela has no artificial additives or preservatives. Ambewela milk is the most sought-after milk product especially with parents as it assures a good balance of taste and good health for kids and young adults. In 2009, realizing the quantum of consumer equity built within the short span of five years, the Ambewela brand was extended to other forms of liquid milk such as UHT Non-fat milk, UHT flavored milk, Cheese and Yoghurt

What a nice place! Have visited many times and have learned a lot from this place during my field visits as a student. A great place to enjoy nature

We have visited Ambewela farm today but unfortunately we were told by the security officers that the farm is closed nearly two years for the public. However from NE to Ambewela farm drive wonderful experience you can see some beautiful tea estates, windmills and amazing sceneries! You can take some good pictures though this way! Recommended to visit this place Have a wonderful time at Ambewala!

A visit to the Ambewela Farm

image_pdf

The lush green pastures of Ambewala and crisp cold climate takes you to another land. Soon, speckles of brown, black, and white appear, creating a picturesque scene. We were at the Ambewala Dairy Farm, and the cows had been led out for grazing.

Words Udeshi Amarasinghe.

Photographs Menaka Aravinda.

Ambewala Farm had been established in the 1940s during World War II as a part of the food production program intiated by the then Minister of Agriculture, D S Senanayake. The Farm came under the purview of the Department of Agriculture, and European breeds were imported to yield high production of milk. In 2001, following the privatization initiative of the Government, Lanka Milk Foods acquired the Farm that consists of 500 hectares of land. The Farm produces over eight million liters of milk per year. Pasture lands have been developed with nutritious types of grass, infrastructure, and new housing to enable animal/cow comfort. The best feeds, with required micronutrients, are prepared and given to the animals, and the in-house team of veterinary surgeons and nutritionists take care of the animals.

The Farm has three sections: the Ambewala Farm, New Zealand Farm, and Ambewala Products Farm. While the Ambewala Farm and Ambewala Products are not accessible to the public, New Zealand Farm is open for visitors. We were privileged to have been allowed to visit the Ambewala Farm and explore the premises.

The cows at the Ambewala farm are of the best quality, and it is the only modern and state-of-the-art facility in Sri Lanka. The two cow breeds are Holstein Friesian (black and white) from the Netherlands and Ayrshires from the UK. There are 2,500 animals with 1,000 being milked at the three locations.

The morning work had just begun, and the cows were taken to the grasslands. We were amazed by the magnitude of the operations. The pastures were well maintained, with the dung of the cows/cattle recycled as fertilizer for the soil. We took a drive up to the vantage point, where the massive windmills are located, and we were privy to the mesmerizing views. No one is allowed to this location without special permission from Lanka Milk Foods. The nature reserves of Seetha Eliya, Horton Plains and Hakgala surrounded us and on a clear day the four highest mountain peaks of the country (Piduruthalagala, Thotupola Kanda, Kirigalpotta, and Samanala Kanda) can be seen from the vantage point.

We were amazed by the magnitude of the operations. The pastures were well maintained… and we were privy to the mesmerizing views. We were amazed by the magnitude of the operations. The pastures were well maintained… and we were privy to the mesmerizing views.

The pasture is of an imported variety that has a three leaf clover and is the only such area in the country. The Farm also makes it a point to protect the environment by maintaining natural forest pockets, as well as waterways.

We next proceeded to one of the cow shelters, where the comfort of the animal is ensured by providing spacious living spaces with adequate waste disposal systems. The floors are made in a manner that the animal feels as if they are on the grassy ground. The sounds of the cows mooing and moving around gave a sense of activity. Walking through while patting the animals was indeed an enjoyable experience. Thereafter, we proceed to the milking station. Milking is done three times a day; at five in the morning, noon, and nine in the night. As if on cue the cows came in single-file towards the milking station. They stood in line, in their allotted spaces, while the preliminary work of washing the containers, checking whether the cow is ready to be milked, ensuring that everything is cleaned and fixing the pumps were completed.

Pure and fresh milk started to fill into the containers. Generally, a cow would produce 25-28 liters on average per day. The milk thus collected is thereafter sent to the production facilities for processing and the manufacturing of the various Ambewala products. The cows will provide milk up to ten months of giving birth to a calf. Thereafter the cows are given a period of rest before they give birth to another calf, and the cycle continues.

Our next stop was where the little calves were kept. They each had their small area and were continuously fed and looked after by their care-givers. It was indeed surprising to see calves just born the previous day.   The calves grow quickly as they are an imported breed and are weaned and introduced to the herd after three months.

We headed towards the New Zealand Farm, which was about a four-kilometer drive away from Ambewala. This Farm was thus named due to the support provided by the New Zealand government during its inception. Crowds were gathering to visit the Farm, and many were already inside discovering the workings of a dairy farm. In New Zealand Farm, the primary breed of cows is the black and white variety known as Friesians.

As in Ambewala here too, the cows were housed in comfortable shelters, and there were herds grazing on the grasslands as well. As the rain started to pour, the cows huddled together for warmth. New Zealand Farm is also home to rabbits and goats. The rabbits, kept as pets, are of two varieties; the breed form New Zealand Farm is pure white, and the breed from California, USA is white with black on the ear tips, nose, and tail. These animals are fluffy, almost like cotton balls hopping around. The beautiful white Saanen goats are from the Netherlands. The female goats and their offspring are kept separately from the males. These goats easily climbed on to higher elevations and were curious as we passed them.

Having spent the day exploring the Ambewala Farm, we headed out drenched in rain and mud but content that we had experienced the workings of a fully integrated farm that encapsulates the concept of ‘from the grass to the glass of milk.’

Additionally, the farms only use sexed semen to prevent the birth of male calves.

Experts ensure the avoidance of inbreeding that would decline the genetic integrity of the animals through frequent monitoring.

The calves, heifers and cows are provided with ideal environmental conditions in carefully designed cattle sheds. A global expert in cattle nutrition from West Africa designs the formula of the feed for the cattle. Special attention is given when designing and preparing the housing and feed for pregnant cows.

Ensuring good health of the animals is of priority at the farms. Internationally experienced vegetarians lead the healthcare team with the contribution of the rest of the staff. This ensures that the milk produced is of very low plate count.
