What is an Extended Stay Hotel? [Amenities, Pros & Cons and More]

What-is-an-extended-stay-hotel-pros-cons

Before I took off for several months of traveling, during my research period I heard tell of the term, “ Extended Hotel Stay .” Initially, it appealed to me, as I am a lover of hotels to the point where I am forced to anxiously distract myself as checkout hour approaches.

Alas, I didn’t wind up utilizing this amazing resource in the beginning because I really wasn’t sure where I wanted to go or for how long, and ultimately I figured I would be moving around too often to take advantage of it.

Boy, do I regret it!

Now that I am approaching 3-months of life as a digital nomad, I am starting to see the amazing benefits of what extended hotel stays can offer. Not only do you have privacy and amenities that other housing options may not afford, but you can take advantage of discounted rates too—for as short of a time as one week or for as long as several months.

So, what exactly is an extended hotel stay and who is it good for and where do you find one? Fret not! Here are the answers to your questions, and more.

What is an Extended Stay Hotel?

In the simplest of terms, an extended stay hotel offers a private furnished room at an establishment that typically has amenities such as a kitchen, WiFi, and sometimes even a cleaning service. The room can be rented out for a discounted weekly or monthly rate. In most cases, the longer you stay, the better the rate . And more than likely, there are no contracts necessary, which is a definite boon.

There are a variety of different extended stay accommodation styles, ranging from (to put it bluntly) super cheap to very luxurious. You’ll find them in a variety of locations as well, ranging from major metropolitan cities to more remote places.

Each option will come with its own set of amenities, perks, and leasing options.

P ros of Extended Stay Hotels

  • Basic amenities (ie., water, gas, kitchen, WiFi.)
  • Furnishings, so you don’t have to worry about anything besides showing up with your luggage.
  • There are often no contracts or long-term obligations. You pay, you move in.
  • You have time to get to know a place, whether you’re moving to a new location long term, or visiting a new city temporarily, having a singular place to call “home” gives you time for exploration.
  • Generally, hotels are conveniently located to fit their guest’s needs.
  • Extended stay hotels are budget-friendly.

Cons of Extended Stay Hotels

  • Space will likely be smaller than a standard apartment.
  • There may not be a lot of “pizazz” in your accommodations.
  • Some amenities, like a kitchen, might be limited.

Who Should Consider an Extended Stay Hotel?

When I had initially looked into getting an extended hotel room, I didn’t realize the number of people who could benefit from this housing option. Let’s get into the details.

Professionals

Extended stay hotels are great for professionals in various industries who are away from home for several weeks or longer.

  • Business trips: Corporate business, project work, short-term assignments, and market/location visits
  • Government work: Legislators, campaign professionals, contractors, and policy advocates that travel often

Life Changes

Extended stay hotels are a solid choice for those moving across town or across the country or making a new or temporary home. And if you’re still sorting out logistics—like what neighborhood you want to live in, or if you haven’t found a job yet—an extended stay hotel could be for you.

  • Moving and relocating: Extended stay hotels make life easy while between homes.
  • Medical travel: For those working as a traveling health professional (like a traveling nurse), or those who are receiving care away from home.
  • Renovations and repairs: Those who need a place to stay while having repairs or renovations completed.

Long-Term Travel and Vacations

The comforts and amenities of an extended stay hotel are quite nice for those exploring new locations, and for vacations or seasonal travel.

  • Digital nomads: Those who can work remotely and want to see new places.
  • Exploring: If you’re making a change in your life and would like to take some commitment-free time to explore a new location.
  • Seasonal travel: For people who like to chase a specific season or weather type (like warm, sunny beaches in the winter!).
  • Vacations: Can be an extremely affordable option if you plan to stay in a city for weeks or longer.
  • Sabbaticals: Professors and teachers on sabbaticals.

Education and Continued Learning

For those pursuing educations or dedicated to learning new skills, extended stay hotels provide a suitable alternative to other types of housing.

  • College: Off-campus housing for students of all ages.
  • Ongoing studies: Course work, training, continuing education, and higher education that takes place in a particular location away from home.
  • Corporate training: Professional development, skill development, and training and learning for work.

Where Can I Find an Extended Hotel Stay?

Resources for finding the best extended stay hotels are growing every day. Now, many different hotels, motels, etc., offer discounted rates for long-term stays. You can find a plethora of them on Anyplace , where the rates have already been negotiated down for extended stays. All you have to do is choose your location, room, and apply. You can also inquire about discounted rates at your favorite hotels directly, but they might not allow for lengthy accommodations.

Tips for Finding the Best Extended Stay Hotel

  • Reviews, reviews, reviews: I always leave them because I always read them. Don’t just book blindly. Read what other people have said about the place.
  • Look up the location: Then, figure out how you can get from your location to the places you’ll want or need to go. Then, look up the nearest grocery store, airport, transit, restaurants, city center, etc. Try and find out if the neighborhood is known for being safe or not. If you’re staying at a place for a long period of time, you don’t want to wind up getting stuck in the boonies.
  • Make sure you know (and can honor) the “House Rules:” For instance, if there’s a shared kitchen in the extended stay hotel, you might be required to take care of your own dishes. Or, some might have a cleaning service that takes care of it for you. Some places may have designated smoking areas, etc. Just make sure you’re not blindsided.

Should You Try an Extended Stay Hotel?

As a frequent traveler, I find myself bending over backward to find the best and most affordable places to stay. I’ve jumped from apartment to hostel to hotel every few nights or weeks, and you know what I found? Moving around so frequently is exhausting and can a ctually be more expensive than locking in a place longer-term, especially if you’ll be in a location for a while.

Choosing an extended hotel can give you comfort, amenities, privacy, and consistency that should make you feel at home. And, it’s a good housing option for people in a variety of situations—whether it’s related to a profession, academic/skill development, relocation/moving or even for pleasure.

Where to next? Find flexible month-to-month rentals across the globe on  Anyplace .

You’re off to travel the world for six months, a year, or maybe more. Perhaps you are on voluntary sabbatical, the victim of a recent job layoff, enjoying a gap year, working or volunteering overseas, retired, or simply following a dream. To get started all you need to do is conduct a bit of destination research, look at some guidebooks, phone a travel agent, book a flight, and buy some bug spray and some wash-and-wear clothes, and you’re off.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Deciding to travel is the easy part. Preparing for an extended absence requires a surprising amount of planning. For instance, have you thought about healthcare or travel insurance? Will you rent or sublet your house or apartment, or will you place all of your belongings in storage while you are away? What about managing your finances and paying bills? And how will you keep in touch with others from afar? Here are a few basic guidelines:

Housing, Automobile, Storage

1. Renting or Subletting Your Home . Depending on your financial situation and the length of your journey, it may be wise to rent or sublet your home or apartment while you’re away. Many local property management companies handle rentals—finding tenants, managing miscellaneous repairs, and collecting rental fees—giving you peace of mind at a small price. Alternatively, you can rent your home yourself using local classifieds or community-based websites like Craigslist. Depending on the rental market in your region, you will want to begin this process three to six months prior to your departure date.

2. Household Storage Options. Storage options include monthly storage lockers (fairly inexpensive, you do the hauling), your dad’s garage (dirt cheap, but comes with an entirely different type of price tag), and door-to-door storage companies. The latter is most expensive but quite convenient when packing up a multi-room apartment or home. SUV-sized storage crates are delivered to directly to your driveway, you pack them up and attach your own personal locks, then they are whisked away to safe storage as soon as you’ve finished. (Be sure to ask about access to your storage crates, insurance, and how to handle monthly payments while traveling)

3. Automobile Storage and Insurance. If you plan to leave your automobile at home while traveling, you will obviously need to find suitable parking or storage. Check with your city’s police and your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for rules, regulations, registration information, and possible fees. Even if your car will not be driven (“non-operational,” in DMV parlance), you may need to renew your current vehicle registration. Go to www.onlinedmv.com for a directory of all DMV websites. Also, be sure to cancel your automobile insurance as appropriate, or obtain information on how to add a new driver to your insurance policy and vehicle registration if someone else will be driving your car while you are away.

Financial Matters

1. Banking. Most financial institutions now offer online banking, often at no cost to account holders, whereby you can access your account via the Internet from any location in the world. Services generally include electronic transfer of funds, online bill payment, credit card linkages, and more. Contact your bank for details.

Additionally, it is often useful to leave a number of blank, signed checks and/or deposit slips in the hands of a trusted family member or friend for any unforeseen financial matters that may arise in your absence.

2. Bill Payment. As noted above, most banks allow you to manage your outgoing payments (for storage, rent, medical insurance, etc.) from the Web. Additionally, many utilities and service providers now support “ebills” so that incoming bills are handled exclusively online.

3. Taxes. Regardless of your current employment status or geographic location, Uncle Sam expects to hear from you every April 15. While you may be able to file for an extension and complete your taxes when you return home, be sure to plan for tax time in advance—preferably before leaving for your trip. Using a financial planner or tax professional is perhaps the easiest and most foolproof route; however, you can also file your taxes online using H&R Block Online, TurboTax, or any number of other online resources (you’ll just need to have someone send you the appropriate W-2 forms and other necessary paperwork, or relay the information to you via mail).

Healthcare and Insurance

1. Pre-trip Immunizations and Prescriptions. Traveling to and within many foreign countries requires attention to healthcare issues you may not normally consider at home. For example, is malaria endemic to any of your destinations? Typhoid? And, don’t forget about the dreaded traveler’s trots. At least six to eight weeks before your departure schedule a visit to your physician or your local travel clinic (often housed within your local Department of Health) to discuss what immunizations and medications you may need. Bring a list of possible or planned destinations and discuss any current healthcare issues or medications with your doctor. You can also read up on overseas healthcare issues on the U. S. Government's Traveler's Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) website .

You may also want to consider how you will refill any prescriptions you are now taking on an ongoing basis while you are traveling. You may be able to refill some prescriptions overseas, but others may be more complicated and require some advanced planning. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, consider bringing along multiple pairs (and a copy of your prescription and your eye doctor’s contact information) as well as leaving extras with a friend who can send them if you need them.

2. Medical Insurance. Many different travel insurance plans cover loss of luggage, trip cancellation, and some minor healthcare issues. But if you are traveling for six months or more, most standard U.S. health insurance policies will not cover you, and you would be best served by some form of extended or expatriate medical coverage. The level and type of coverage will vary with your age, current health, travel style, destinations, as well as other factors. Just be sure to find a plan that provides for a significant policy maximum (at least $500,000), medical evacuation, and emergency reunion if you plan to be far from home and your family.

Storing and Backing up Personal Information

1. Passport. It’s always a wise idea to bring multiple copies of your passport with you (stashed in several different locations or scanned and stored electronically on flash drives for easy access), and be sure to keep your passport on your person at all times. For an added measure of safety and availability, consider scanning your passport electronically and sending a copy to yourself in a web-based email program with 2-factor authentication for greater security (such as Google Mail aka Gmail). This will ensure you have access to the document in any town that has WiFi centers, an Internet café, or business center.

2. Credit Card Numbers and Bank Information. Make photocopies of all credit cards you will be taking with you and create an electronic or written record of all credit card numbers, expiration dates, name on the card, and customer service or loss report phone numbers. Leave them with someone at home, such as your travel agent, friend, spouse or another family member. If one gets lost or stolen you are immediately able to report the loss and begin the process of obtaining replacements.

Staying in Touch while Abroad

1. Web Access. One of the easiest and most cost-effective means for staying in touch with friends and loved ones back home is via email ( editor's note : Skype offers telephone conversations via the web for free from computer-to-computer, and is cheap from computer to a phone line, so it is another excellent alternative worth investigating, as is Whatsapp smartphone to smartphone). Depending on your travel destinations, you may have access to Wifi at your hotel or accommodations, or you may find an Internet café or Wifi access in many public places. Using a travel community website such as Lonely Planet , or Rough Guides or one of the many travel apps you can load on a smartphone, you can often query other travelers for information on web access in a specific locale, or check out a local city or country guide for your destination.

If you do not already have access to web email (either via a freeware product such as Google Gmail) you will want to set this up prior to your departure to ensure you can access all of your email remotely from any web-connected computer (Be sure to send your address to your friends and family so they can stay in touch.).

2. Facebook (Or Your Favorite Social Media). To make staying in touch effortless you can easily keep in contact with those who wish to back home. You can upload pictures, videos, and other files such as your itinerary, hotel phone numbers and addresses as well to selective friends.

3. Telephone Access and Phone Cards. Telephone access to and from many countries can be easy or difficult. For information on phone service and calling prices at your destinations check your guidebook, the local phone company, or a travel community website. Many of the larger international phone providers (AT&T, Sprint, etc.) offer prepaid phone cards or calling cards you can use from overseas. Rates and access points can vary wildly. As a result, you are not likely to find one single card or service that you can use from anywhere in the world. It is often best to scout out a local calling card or phone service once you arrive at your latest destination. See Cheap Alternatives to a Your Cell Phone Company While Abroad for many, many more options.

So get going! Each traveler’s personal pre-trip checklist will depend on the duration and destination of the planned trip and a variety of other personal and family factors. Consider this one to be the helpful reminder you need to get started and get traveling!

Preparing for Extended Travel

Getting a visa to get in to Myanmar is not difficult nor expensive. Preparing for extended travel.

Get ready for your next Extended Trip

By Marie Javins

Going Nomad for longer than two months? Leaving your job and home for adventure in the great unknown?

The leap from a stable home and routine employment to full-time explorer can be jarring. Here is a useful guide to planning for extended travel.

It cannot be made seamlessly. Extended travel requires months of planning to minimize catastrophe and inconvenience, both abroad and at home. Plan to begin four to six months ahead of your departure.

BE YOUR OWN ADVANCE RESEARCH TEAM

Safety, Budge, and Responsible Travel

When planning your route, consider climate, jetlag, and accessibility. Read about hot spots, war zones and closed borders on the US State Department Consular Information website . Never assume that two neighboring countries have good relations.

Learn where your dollar goes farthest and weigh it against your tolerance for the inconveniences of the region. Educate yourself about tourism boycotts, and make a personal decision on which countries to visit.

Guide Books

bookstalls in Old Havana

Spend a few days in the travel section of your local mega-bookstore.

Study guidebooks carefully, looking for one that agrees with your style of travel such as a similar extended travel trip to what you are planning.

Check the copyright date of the book you choose. Is it the most recent edition?

A guide that is two years out of date may still be accurate for Western Europe or Australia, but two years is an eternity in rapidly changing areas with unstable currency.

Check the publisher’s website before making a purchase. A newer edition may be in the works.

Travel Options Read up on the travel options in the region. Employ a good travel agent to check on airfares. Some countries have reliable transportation, with buses, trains , and planes that adhere to rigid schedules. Other areas have nebulous schedules, with instructions such as “go to the corner, buses leave when full.”

If vague information and independent travel make you nervous, consider going with a small group. Longer overland trips are a good alternative. If touring doesn’t appeal to you, perhaps you’d prefer alternative travel.

Research and more research The Internet is a massive library of information on your destination. Block out time to wade through sites, reading about culture, books, travel clothes , accommodation, and local transport.

Consider the date the information was posted and the credibility of the source. Don’t get discouraged if you turn up nothing. Keep digging. Not everything is listed in search engines.

COVER YOUR BASES

Health Consult with a physician for prescriptions and vaccinations. Some vaccinations require multiple visits to a travel clinic, so leave plenty of time. Also, visit your dentist. Women should get a gynecological exam. Inform your doctors that you are taking an extended trip, and take contact info, including e-mail and fax numbers, for all of them.

Get a World Health Organization International Certificate of Vaccination from your doctor — some countries require evidence of a Yellow Fever vaccine.

Health insurance sometimes covers individuals outside of their home country and sometimes does not. Regardless, insurance companies toll-free 800 numbers may not work where you’re going, so call your insurer and get an alternative phone number.

Consider getting medical evacuation, cancellation and baggage insurance, and read. It may be cheaper to get a comprehensive travel policy that covers health, medical evacuation, and life than to stick with your existing policy. Price out and buy travel insurance.

Passports, Visas, and Other Documents

passport

Apply for or renew your passport, if it is going to expire within a year. Many countries won’t allow you in if your passport is not valid for six months past your date of entry.

Also, consider other memberships and identification: you may want an ISIC student or teacher card, a youth hostel card, or an international driver’s license.

Carry several extra passport photos with you-you’ll need them for visas en route.

Many countries require visas for entry. Read the specific requirements and application procedures on the Embassy’s home page, accessed fromembassy.org. Start early, but not so early that the visa expires before you leave the U.S. Some visas can be acquired at the port of entry. It may be easiest to use a visa service.

Money: Don’t take multiple credit cards — they’re hard to keep track of. There are still some places that accept only Visa, not Mastercard. Many regions are dependent solely on cash, others accept credit and ATM cards.

You should have several ways to access your money, but try to stick to a budget to minimize financial strain.

Take U.S. dollars of various denominations. Always keep an emergency supply of cash. Carry new bills if possible. Take a high-limit Visa card, American Express card (if you have one), ATM card, and some blank checks. Get a four-digit PIN for ATM and Visa cards (some ATM’s only accept four digits).

Be sure your card has a chip in it , as some places in Europe only accept chip cards, no longer relying on just swiping.

Use your ATM card to get cash when you can, or cash a check with American Express (card members only). Both are free or nearly free.

In a pinch, use your Visa card to get a cash advance from a bank or ATM. Minimize fees by paying off immediately using online banking, or pay a positive balance on your Visa account before leaving home.

Organize Your Papers

us mail

Organize all your medical info, insurance contacts, passport, I.D. cards, address book, credit card numbers and stolen card phone numbers, travelers’ check numbers with emergency phone numbers, itinerary information, and contact information.

Scan them in and e-mail it to yourself, carry paper copies, and leave copies with trusted friends.

Have the good sense to consider the security of your e-mail account and always sign out of public computers after use. Learn how to clear the cache and quit the browser.

Mail and Communications

Using the Internet, read up on the safety of mail in the regions you’re visiting. Send and receive mail only in countries with reliable service. Use Poste Restante, your hotel, or American Express offices (cardmembers only) to receive mail, and ask for help when sending parcels. Many countries have complex forms that must accompany packages.

Luggage  Choose your gear carefully and find real-world samples of the heavy gear you intend to mail order. Your luggage is your most important purchase.

Extended travel is best served by a convertible travel pack or backpack. Weigh your bag empty before purchasing it, and consult with a specialist on fitting.

Packing Pack light (you can always purchase things as you go). Allow yourself a few small luxuries when gearing up. But remember, chocolate melts, and books are heavy. Carry your pack full, along with a water bottle, guidebook, and your heaviest clothes before choosing your luxuries. Make a checklist of gear, and assemble a first aid kit.

Cameras for recording glacier calving.

Additionally, most Internet service providers that claim to be global are exaggerating. Laptops are heavy, and cyber cafes are plentiful. Leave the laptop at home if you will be on the move a lot. Many travelers swear by bringing along just their iPads and maybe a lightweight portable keyboard.

Lose the Dead Weight

My take on it: unless you’re going to major capital cities, North America, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong or Israel, that fancy high-tech equipment can be classified as one thing only…DEAD WEIGHT. Not to mention bait for border officials wanting bribes or confiscation.

Additionally, they are a security risk and can be ruined by sand, dirt, and water. If you must carry expensive electronics, plan to carry insurance . Reimbursement claims often require proof in the form of a local police report.

Security Get a money belt. Try wearing it for a few days before committing to it. If you don’t feel comfortable with your money and passport bulging out at your waistline, or fear to lose your valuables in a squat toilet, sew zippered pockets inside your travel clothes. Try repositioning your money belt so that it sits below your waist. Beltoutlet.com has a wide selection of affordable money belts, bra stashes, and other good traveling gear.

BACK ON THE FARM

Taking care of your home

treehouse-stay

Back home, your affairs will need to be self-sustaining, or operable by remote control. If you have property, sell or rent it. Renting means being an absentee landlord, so set up a means to solve problems.

Hire a property manager or friend, and leave them with a list of emergency contacts and instructions during your period of extended travel.

Confirm your property insurance covers renting, and clean out your refrigerator in consideration of your tenants.

Force plants onto a friend who needs cheering up. If you have a car, sell it or store it. Pre-pay your insurance on your car, home, and possessions.

Mail Forwarding Whether you sell, rent, or leave your lease, remember to cut off your utilities and phone. Stop magazine subscriptions and file a forwarding address to a friend’s house.

Storage Store your stuff. Prices vary depending on location, so get a few estimates before committing to a storage company. Movers charge a hefty fee, so get several estimates on that too, and have your stuff well packed in boxes before they arrive to save money.

If you are storing a computer, back up the hard drive on a separate CD or disk before putting it in metaphorical mothballs. Upload your browser’s bookmarks or favorites to server space if you know how so that you can access them from any public computer.

Taxes and Other Important Things

You’ll need to develop superhuman organizing skills or get assistance from professionals. Make a will, give a friend power of attorney, and plan for tax season. Add up your deductions and get estimates to your accountant before you go, and then arrange for official documents to be forwarded. File for an extension if you need to.

Banking Your money, if you have enough to worry about, needs special consideration. Remember that you won’t be around when CD’s roll over, and you may miss deadlines for adding to your IRA. Plan ahead, and give yourself some leeway, so that a change in your schedule won’t damage your long-term financial planning. If you have a lot of money in stocks or in a retirement fund, hire a manager, and make sure you’ll have access to your funds via the Internet.

Sign up for online banking and try it out before you leave. It isn’t always possible to reach a computer when you need one, so schedule automatic payments if you can. Free payment services like Paypal and Venmo are two useful ways to handle money transfers.

KEEP IN TOUCH

postcards-rt66

Stay in touch by getting a free browser-based e-mail account, such as Gmail,   Hotmail or Yahoo . You can configure it to check home accounts, as long as they are POP-based.

Planning an extended trip is like planning a wedding. If you can negotiate the planning process, the problems you encounter in the “marriage,” the actual trip, should be a piece of cake.

If you have sold your home, stored your stuff, and convinced your friends to be responsible for your life, missing buses and using strange toilets won’t be traumatic — because they’ll be your only problems in the world.

What You Should Know Before Staying In An Extended-Stay Hotel

woman standing at hotel desk

If you're planning a long-term business trip or family vacation, extended-stay hotels are an ideal lodging option. Guests at these properties can expect better value and more homey features than they would find at conventional hotels. Extended-stay hotels are also becoming increasingly popular in America.

Growth in the extended stay hotel industry means travelers have more options than ever before. As hotel chains compete for guests, they are offering more on-site amenities like fitness facilities and outdoor grills, and even perks like complimentary happy hour events. Travelers can also take advantage of competitive rates, especially when visiting areas near popular tourist attractions and major airports where multiple hotels are vying for guests.

There are some key differences between conventional hotels and those designed for extended-stay guests. Travelers can generally expect a lower per-night rate at extended-stay properties because they are generating guaranteed, relatively longer-term revenue for the property. However, amenities like fine dining restaurants, spas, and valet parking are largely absent from extended-stay hotels and are more likely to be found at conventional hotels.

Many (but not all) will provide a complimentary hot breakfast

While most extended-stay properties won't have on-site restaurants, the best hotels provide a complimentary hot breakfast for guests. Breakfast offerings vary by property, but generally, one can expect a buffet spread that includes hot items like eggs, waffles, toast or pancakes, and breakfast meats. Some even offer eggs made-to-order or omelets. There are usually grab-and-go items like yogurt and pastries, too.

Travelers who prefer to eat healthy or have dietary restrictions would be wise to inquire about the breakfast menu with the hotel staff in advance of booking their reservation. While most breakfast buffets offer lighter fare like fresh fruit, oatmeal, and cereal, the food available may not adequately satisfy protein or fiber requirements for all guests. In this instance, guests may need to prepare their own breakfasts using the kitchen in their suite, search out more suitable options at nearby restaurants, or explore the hotel's convenience store.

Outdoor gathering spaces can be freeing

It's easy to feel cooped up in a hotel, especially during longer stays. Thankfully, extended-stay hotels are increasingly incorporating outdoor gathering spaces. While the exact configuration varies by hotel, travelers can expect to find a patio with amenities like comfortable seating, firepits or fireplaces, and gas grills.

Some properties go the extra mile to enhance the alfresco experience. For example, Marriott's TownePlace Suites brand partners with the premium grill brand, Weber, to provide an elevated grilling option on its patios. These hotels also provide Weber's proprietary seasonings and grilling tools. Guests can obtain recipes from the hotel staff.

Additional amenities may be available at a hotel's patio area to enhance the "home-on-the-road" experience. IHG's Staybridge Suites brand advertises an upscale "Outdoor Living Room" concept featuring gazebos, high-definition televisions, and background music at some of its properties. In the brand's news release announcing the launch of the outdoor gathering area approach, IHG's vice president of Brand Management, noted, "Recently, we launched a gathering table similar to that of a residential kitchen island where guests can comfortably interact during breakfast and evening sundowner receptions. While socializing is popular indoors and beyond, the Outdoor Living Room is another way our guests can socialize and relax in an environment similar to what they expect at home."

Quality extended stays offer fitness facilities

Quality extended-stay hotels feature fitness facilities on par with conventional hotels so travelers can maintain their wellness routines while on the go. The typical fitness studio includes cardio equipment like treadmills and elliptical machines and free weights for strength training. Fitness rooms are generally available 24 hours a day, seven days per week.

In addition to fitness studios, guests can expect to find either an indoor or outdoor swimming pool. Hilton's Home 2 Suites brand of extended stay properties advertises saline pools at all its hotels that are free from chlorine and chemicals. Some properties also offer a hot tub adjacent to the pool area.

While less common than fitness centers and swimming pools, some upscale extended-stay hotels feature on-site sports courts and other fitness opportunities. For example, Marriott's Residence Inn hotel at the Western entrance of Disneyworld includes a basketball court, batting cages, and a soccer field. The Level Hotel in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood offers a basketball court and a rock-climbing wall.

Added convenience can enhance your experience

Extended-stay hotel guests can expect practical amenities and services that make life easier while away from home for a long period. Convenience markets are a common feature at better extended-stay properties and usually offer a variety of beverages, snacks, and toiletries. IHG's Staybridge Suites convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, seven days per week, and offer meal kits that can be easily prepared in a suite's kitchen. Best Western's extended-stay properties provide free coffee and tea in its convenience stores throughout the day.

Other convenience-oriented amenities abound at extended-stay hotels. Travelers can expect to find on-site laundry facilities that are usually available 24 hours a day, seven days per week, and are complimentary for guest use. Because housekeeping services may only be scheduled on a weekly basis for long-term occupancies, guests may choose to launder their bedding and towels (or bring their own) in between cleaning days. Some properties also provide storage areas with lockable units where guests can keep items to avoid clutter in their suites.

Many extended stays promote social activities

Hotel chains strive to differentiate from the competition by offering unique services to enhance the traveler's experience. Premium extended-stay brands are elevating the industry from the basic accommodations typically associated with this type of hotel to make their guests' stay more fun and engaging. Check for unique services and amenities before booking a reservation to take full advantage of what hotels are offering.

Complimentary social hours are a growing trend at extended-stay hotels. In a news release , Marriott noted that its happy hour program was launched to "appeal to next-generation business travelers." Known as the Residence Inn Mix, the hotel chain hosts these events for guests three nights per week. Guests can expect a selection of beer and wine as well as a variety of appetizers, sometimes provided by local food trucks. IHG's Staybridge Suites also feature complimentary social hour events three nights per week with beer, wine, and light appetizers.

The perks don't end with complimentary wine. Marriott's TownePlace Suites feature the Something Borrowed program that allows guests to swing by the front desk and borrow items like kitchen gadgets, cookbooks, grilling tools, and board games. Some hotels, like Marriott Residence Inn properties and certain Uptown Suites hotels, even provide free grocery delivery.

Extended-stay hotels are located almost everywhere

Location is one of the critical factors to consider when choosing accommodations. More robust extended-stay hotel chains offer locations near major airports, along frequently traveled freeways, popular tourist destinations, and in proximity to other desirable communities. Hotel brands that are part of a global umbrella portfolio have properties around the world.

Travelers planning a multi-destination trip can find consistency in services and amenities by booking with the same hotel chain at each of their destinations. The expansion of extended-stay hotel chains provides ample opportunity to stay with the same brand throughout one's itinerary. For example, Marriott offers over 850 Residence Inn hotels and 275 TownePlace Suites properties. Hilton's Homewood Suites properties can be found in over 500 locations, and there are more than 640 of the brand's Home2 Suites by Hilton hotels.

Travelers planning an international trip can explore extended-stay hotel opportunities abroad, too. Hyatt House properties are available at over 125 locations around the globe, and IHG's Staybridge Suites can be found in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, in addition to North America.

Most offer a range of accommodations to suit your needs

One of the benefits of extended-stay hotels is that they offer a broad range of room types, from studio suites to apartments, to suit a variety of needs at lower rates than conventional hotels. Even small studio suites include a kitchen so guests can prepare their own meals. Larger units may include two bedrooms and one or two bathrooms. Some extended-stay accommodations may also feature a small office space.

When making a reservation at an extended-stay hotel, expect to find multiple rate options as one would expect from a conventional hotel. The prepaid, non-refundable rate is usually the lowest, followed by flexible rates that allow the reservation to be canceled within a specified period according to hotel policy. Additionally, properties belonging to a larger umbrella brand offer member-only rates for travelers enrolled in the brand's loyalty rewards program. Most extended-stay hotels offer nightly and weekly rates, but some properties can provide a monthly rate for guests planning a longer-term stay.

Some extended-stay hotels also offer specials and packages in addition to the standard rate structure. Packages may include free parking in a secured facility or complimentary shuttle transportation to and from the nearest airport. For example, Hilton's Homewood Suites chain offers a package that includes an on-property credit, premium Wi-fi, early check-in, and late check-out.

Kitchens create a home-away-from-home experience

The signature feature of extended-stay hotels is the kitchen built into guest accommodations. The ability to prepare one's own meals is convenient and helps long-term guests save money by not having to rely on restaurant dining. While kitchens are pretty standard among extended stays, guests should expect some variation in the size of the kitchen and equipment provided. If kitchen amenities are an influencing factor in selecting an extended stay property, it's wise to research the hotel chains at the desired destination to determine whether the kitchen will be satisfactory.

Generally, kitchens will include a standard-sized refrigerator (as opposed to the mini refrigerators often found in conventional hotel rooms), sink, dishwasher, counter space, microwave, coffee maker, and stovetop. Notably, ovens are not standard in extended-stay hotel kitchens. Hilton's Home2 Suites kitchens do not have built-in stovetops, but guests may borrow an induction burner cooktop free of charge from the front desk.

Expect some variation in the gadgets, cookware, and dishes provided. While some hotels may provide basic pots, pans, and dishes, others do not. As an example, Woodspring Suites' website notes that most of their guests bring their own kitchen utensils, but the hotels have dishware, cutlery, pots, and pans available for purchase at the front desk.

Extended-stay hotels may be ideal for families

Extended-stay hotels are an optimal choice for family vacations because of the larger room accommodations, eliminating the need to book two adjoining rooms for families of six to eight people. Some chains cater to business travelers, but others are more family-friendly and can be found near tourist attractions and activities for youth. Because playgrounds are rarely found on most extended-stay hotel properties, picking a location close to entertainment options for children is an important consideration for families.

Disneyland is one of the most popular tourist destinations in America for families, and there are plenty of extended-stay hotel options near Disneyland . The Marriott Residence Inn at Anaheim Resort offers a kids' suite with bunk beds, child-scale furnishings, and fun décor. There is also a dedicated children's swimming pool. At the Extended Stay America hotel in Anaheim, guests can even purchase their Disneyland tickets at the front desk.

On the opposite coast, families heading to Disney World can find plenty of extended-stay hotel options near the theme park. The Marriott Residence Inn Orlando Lake Buena Vista offers family suites and is a designated Walt Disney World Good Neighbor Hotel. Also nearby is IHG's Candlewood Suites, also a designated Walt Disney World Good Neighbor Hotel. The property is within four miles of all four Disney World parks and within one mile of Disney Springs.

What to expect for your furry friends

Not to be forgotten, pets are another key consideration when planning a long-term hotel stay. Luckily, most extended-stay hotel chains have permissive pet policies, although they do vary by location. Guests should expect to pay an extra fee for having pets in their suites.

IHG Staybridge Suites properties in the Americas are pet-friendly hotels , although the maximum weight and non-refundable pet fee vary by property. Guests are issued a "Pet In Suite" magnet for their room door, and the hotel requires pets to be secured in a carrier when left in the suite unattended. Extended Stay America offers pet-friendly hotels, and a maximum of two pets are allowed in each suite. There is a non-refundable cleaning fee of $25 per day, per pet, for the first six nights, and $10 per day, per pet, for every night thereafter. Pets can be no longer than 36 inches and no taller than 36 inches. Hilton Homewood Suites not only welcomes pets, but partners with Mars Petcare, a pet products and services company, to provide tips on pet care while away from home for an extended period.

Note that the pet policies at extended-stay hotels do not apply across the board to service animals. If traveling with a service animal, it is advised to check with the hotel directly for information on any applicable rules.

Most offer amenities for business travel

Whether traveling for business, it's important to have easy access to amenities for work productivity. While some extended-stay accommodations include an office space, many hotels also provide a business center where guests can accomplish basic computer tasks. Guests can expect to find Internet-connected computers, printers, office furniture, and often basic supplies like writing utensils, staplers, and extra printer paper.

More robust amenities for business purposes are more likely available at extended-stay hotels located in major metropolitan areas where business travel is common. Marriott Residence Inn hotels provide business centers with standard office equipment as well as private meeting spaces that can be reserved for business events. Guests can also have their business attire dry-cleaned. The Level Hotel in Seattle offers meeting spaces where guests can host business functions or have a quiet place to work remotely. The property also features an entertainment suite where guests can host colleagues in a more social atmosphere.

You can earn rewards along the way

Global brands offer hotel rewards programs that allow guests to earn points redeemable for hotel stays and other perks. These programs are typically free to join, and travelers who aren't already enrolled can sign up when booking their reservation. Joining a loyalty program also allows travelers to leverage points across multiple hotel chains under the main umbrella brand.

At a minimum, entry-level members can expect exclusive room rates and complimentary Wi-fi during their stay. Membership benefits are enhanced as travelers rack up nights on their accounts and get promoted to the next tier of the program. Careful research is advised when choosing a rewards program, as they all entail unique benefits and have distinct structures.

Prominent hotel loyalty programs in the United States include IHG's One Rewards,  Hilton Honors , and Marriott Bonvoy. At a high level, all these platforms allow guests to book reservations using points, but points may also be used for activities offered at the hotel properties, like spa treatments and dining. Each of these brands also provides opportunities for guests to redeem points with partners for experiences like gourmet restaurant dining, concert tickets, shopping, and gift cards. Members can also earn points through a brand's corporate partnerships with car rental companies or airlines.

You usually won't be limited for choice

Location and cost are typically the primary considerations when booking your hotel . Hotels located in the desired area can be evaluated based on the accommodations and associated rates available for your chosen dates. Many factors can influence the cost of your stay, including the time of year and whether you belong to a rewards program. It's also advisable to research any package deals available at extended-stay hotels at your destination to see if you can save on transportation or parking costs.

From there, review the amenities and services that are most important to help determine the best extended-stay property for your trip. An on-site happy hour is unlikely to be a high priority if you're planning a family trip, and pet-friendly policies aren't useful (and may even be a deterrent) if you're not traveling with a pet.  Other considerations, like the availability of premium cable channels or entertainment streaming services, electric vehicle charging stations, and parking fees, may be important factors to consider as well. There are numerous extended-stay hotel chains in the market, each with unique accommodations and amenities. Whether traveling for business or leisure, the wide variety of extended-stay hotels can ensure you find the right fit.

The Best Destinations for an Extended Trip in 2022

Still holding off on taking your next big vacation? Whether you have a backlog of PTO, a remote job, or just retired, here are the best places to spend your extra time in 2022.

meaning of extended travel

For many of us, a long weekend or short vacation trip squeezed into a busy work schedule is a thing of the past. You may have retired from full-time work or discovered by way of COVID quarantine that you can work remotely and take your job wherever you go.

Still others are resisting the return to office after becoming accustomed to working at home. According to the Wall Street Journal , more U.S. workers are leaving their jobs than at any time in more than two decades. Some are seeking new positions that allow remote work beyond the pandemic while others are using their skills for independent work instead.

If you're someone whose life has become more flexible for any reason, you're probably thinking about places you've wanted to visit but may have postponed due to lack of time. Perhaps you'd like to get on the open road and explore the country or travel to a far away place. You'll want appealing surroundings and a variety of things to see and do in your free time. An extended trip is a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture or learn a new language.

Here are some ideas to inspire you to pack up your laptop, sandals, hiking boots, and whatever you'll need in your home away from home.

Australia's borders may not open until next year , but the massive country is full of diverse landscapes and experiences that make it worth the wait — and worth staying a while. A trip " down under " is your chance to see kangaroos, koalas, and wallabies in their natural habitats. In South Australia , swim on Adelaide's beaches or taste the wines of Barossa and the Clare Valley. Explore the Flinders Ranges in the Outback, grab a ferry to Kangaroo Island, or relax on a houseboat on the Murray River.

Thrill to the scenery of Sydney with its iconic Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and famous beaches. Feed kangaroos at one of several wildlife parks, and explore Australia's Aboriginal culture in the New South Wales Outback and Mutawintji National Park. Dive, snorkel, or cruise the Great Barrier Reef , visit Perth in Western Australia , and explore the Outback in the country's largest state. Don't miss cosmopolitan Brisbane , capital of Queensland, and a visit to nearby Lone Pine , the world's largest koala sanctuary.

Start with a week-long river cruise along the Rhine or Danube in Europe or, for an extended experience, combine several European river cruises. You can venture to Africa for 10 days of exploring the " Secrets of Egypt and the Nile " or 17 days in Africa's national parks, Victoria Falls, and Serengeti.

For an even longer getaway, world cruises can keep you on the sea for the better part of a year as long as your bank account can handle it. Regent Seven Seas , Seabourn , and other cruise companies offer a variety of itineraries. You can experience the Galapagos in a luxury yacht or on one of several adventures offered by Celebrity Cruises . If sailing among the islands of the South Pacific sounds dreamy, check out Paul Gauguin Cruises , Regent Seven Seas , and Cunard Line's 20-day cruise boarding in Sydney, Australia.

By the way, most cruise ships offer internet and Wi-Fi with varying prices, bandwidth, and speed, so if you're planning to be productive on your cruise, check that out first.

California's Highway 1 is one of the best known drives in the country, and rather than just cruising the road, you have time for leisurely stops along the way. Spend time in San Diego if you're starting on the southern end, enjoying downtown's restaurants and the coastal beaches. Orange County offers picturesque beach towns, Disneyland, and artsy Laguna Beach. You can spend a week in Los Angeles and not see all the city has to offer.

Drive up the Central Coast through wine country in Paso Robles , Santa Barbara , and Edna Valley , continuing on the Highway 1 Discovery Route . Spend a few days in the area's charming towns to get the real flavor of California's history and agricultural bounty. Big Sur , the Monterey Peninsula, redwoods, and the rugged northern coast will keep you fascinated for days. Make some time for inland detours too.

On the East Coast, starting around Jacksonville near Florida's border with Georgia, charming Amelia Island is just offshore. Head south from there on Scenic Highway A1A , a two-lane road lying between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway along beaches, nature trails, estuaries, and preserves. Spend some time in luxurious Ponte Vedra Beach and America's oldest city, St. Augustine. Continue south surrounded by the sea for spectacular views, delicious seafood, and a leisurely drive. Tour the Kennedy Space Center and perhaps take a detour to Orlando where you'll find theme parks and lots more. Take your time and stay on Highway 1 clear down to Key West where you'll want to kick back and enjoy sunset in the southernmost point of the U.S.

Singapore and Maldives

Halfway around the world and worth every minute of flight time, Singapore is one of the most exciting cities (it's a city, nation, and island) in the world. The airport alone is a wondrous destination with gardens, fountains, restaurants, shopping, and ever-changing attractions. From there, you'll find fascinating culture, delicious food at hawker markets, the stunning Gardens by the Bay , and lush Botanic Gardens . Be sure to sip a Singapore Sling at historic Raffles Hotel's Long Bar where the cocktail originated.

Republic of Maldives , an archipelago of more than a thousand tiny islands in the Indian Ocean southwest of India, offers an island lifestyle and clear turquoise seas. Upscale resorts are set on their own islands, but it's also possible to enjoy the islands on a budget by staying in one of the many guesthouses . You can truly experience the local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle in an informal setting. Snorkeling, diving, surfing, fishing, and boating among the islands are just a few things to do, and there's always time to work on your tan.

Looking for "pura vida?" You'll find it in Central America's Costa Rica where it's more than just a phrase — it's a lifestyle. The country's natural beauty, geographical variety, and biodiversity make it a perfect place to spend a long visit. Beach lovers can choose the Caribbean's clear waters, sandy beaches, and shorefront hiking trails or the Pacific's surfing, diving, snorkeling, and fishing on Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula.

Explore Costa Rica's national parks, wildlife refuges, biological reserves, and protected areas for hiking, bird watching, and learning about the country's flora and fauna. Arenal Volcano National Park in the northwest and Ballena National Marine Park on the west coast are just two of the country's 29 national parks.

Stay in a luxury resort, a hillside retreat in the central valley, or an eco-lodge set in a jungle rainforest. Wherever you decide to make your temporary home in Costa Rica, you'll quickly understand the meaning of pura vida.

Trading Places

Well, not literally, but if you live in an urban environment, you might want to experience life in a small town. And, if your home is in a small town and you wonder what life is like in the big city, you can find out with an extended visit. Short vacations as a tourist don't quite provide a true picture of daily life.

America offers quaint towns from coast to coast and north to south, most with Airbnbs available for extended stays. Towns you may not have heard of like Greenville , South Carolina; Chatham, New York; and Shelbyville , Kentucky might surprise you with the richness of life there.

On the other hand, you've heard of most of the cities , but what is it like to really live in one? Pack up and experience the restaurants, museums, attractions, and lifestyle of the city. If this is beginning to sound like the fable of the town mouse and the country mouse , it's close, but you won't know how your story will turn out until you give it a try.

Reality of Extended Travel

The reality of extended travel.

Tazara Train Boarding - Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Tazara Train Boarding – Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

I have had numerous periods of long term travel. The first was from October 1991 – October 1992, and this was followed by other periods of extended travel, but not for as long, such as two trips of 7+ weeks to India and Bangladesh in 2004 and 2006, 10 weeks in Western Europe, Middle East and East Africa in 2008. Also, another similar period of travel in the Middle East and Africa again in 2010, plus a period of 7 weeks in Northern and South-East Asia in 2011.

However, I have now been on the road constantly since December 2012. I have not returned to Australia (the only place in the world where I do have residence) since that time. This does not mean I have travelled continuously – far from it.  But it does mean (and due to visa issues) that I do not and have not had a secure home base for more than 6 years.

It has been an incredible journey, albeit a tiring one at times. This extended travel has taught me many things about living life on the road. Is it easy – no; is it enjoyable – mostly yes; is it recommended – definitely yes, but not for too long.

If you wish to take on the challenge of extended travel, you will need to know of a few tips from my experience of having done this many, many times.

Don’t Have A Detailed Itinerary

Planning for a three or four-week holiday takes a lot of time, so imagine how long it will take to plan for three or four months on the road. The best way to plan for your long term travel is this – think of where you need to be in the world at certain periods of time (usually due to weather considerations). Look at the first region in your itinerary and only plan for that region. Once you have reached the first region, then you can start planning for the second region and so on. When going for an extended period where you know that you have flexibility with an itinerary, I almost always only book the first night or the first few nights in a country and work the rest of my itinerary out after I arrive.  Be aware that if you are taking an around the world ticket, you will need to book your flights before you depart on the first one. In that case, you will need an overall idea of where you want to be and when. However, even if this applies to you, don’t get too detailed about what you want to do anywhere except for the first place your plane arrives.

Slow Travel

If travelling for an extended period at the same pace as on a shorter holiday, you will quickly become exhausted.   If you have the time, use it. Instead of trying to see five cities in two weeks, why not stay in the one place for a week or even longer. Not only is this a cheaper way of travel, but it allows one to gain a deeper understanding of the places visited. This is such an important area that is included on a separate page, and this is reached by following the link below:

Taking A Break From Travel

Even if travelling slowly, you will eventually reach a point where you no longer want to unpack and repack your bags. Your only desire is to stay in one place and do nothing. If you feel this way, then listen to what your mind and body are saying and stop.   Find a decent place in a location to relax and be pampered if that is your desire. Don’t keep pushing along the travel road if you are getting so weary that the experience is no longer enjoyable. If you hit travel burnout, it will take you a very long time to recover, so don’t push yourself to that point. How long you stay in one place will depend on the circumstance. During a 6-7 weeks period on the road, I usually had a period of 3 or 4 nights, where I stopped to recharge. If you are travelling for longer or if your travel is particularly tiring, then you may need to stay a week or more. Listen to what your body and mind are telling you – when the time is right to start moving again, you will know.

Establish A Base or Two

You don’t want to carry heavy winter clothes to a hot destination, and likewise, bring your summer clothes to a cold one. You will accumulate a lot of possessions during extended travel because you need to cater for a range of different environments and situations. It is not possible to carry it all. Try to have a base (or two) where you can leave some of your belongings.

My previous base was in Dubai due to its central location to Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East and the fact that most of the work occurred in the city. I rented a storage shed where all my belongings not currently needed were kept. It obviously costs money to maintain this storage facility, but it is preferable to carting it around the globe and incurring numerous and more costly excess baggage charges. Now, my base is in Kenya, and it does make life much easier to carry a few items if I am heading to a destination for a few days, instead of having to take everything with me everywhere I go. This sort of travel can tire you very quickly.

Dealing With Mail Matters

Another thing to consider is where to get important mail delivered. For example, receiving a replacement credit/debit card is going to require a physical address and if you are continually moving this is going to be difficult, and you are at risk of losing access to your money. If you are staying in one place for long, see if you can use their address for such vital correspondence. Write to the hotel in advance and ask if this is possible (it usually is) – they will then provide you with an address for correspondence. Make sure you let the hotel know what they should expect to receive so they can log in for you if it arrives before your arrival.

Dealing With Medical Matters

This is an issue with anyone who requires regular medication. If you travel for extended periods, your medication is going to run out or expire. You may find the same medication, but it is likely to be offered with a different name or not at all. Talk to your usual doctor before you leave to find the alternative names for your medications. Another option is to talk with an overseas doctor or pharmacist, and they can suggest an alternative. Of course, you must have excellent travel insurance (see below) to cover you in case something does happen that requires attention.

Establish A Non-Travel Life

This becomes important after a very long period of travel (one year or more). Remember the small things that made your life at home comfortable? Try to replicate this on the road.   For example, board games make me relax. It’s not possible to carry large games, but I can carry smaller, lighter ones. If you love music, then purchase an MP3 with a substantial memory so that you have a vast range of music to listen to during your travels.   Have you thought about bringing your favourite incense? What about a collection of your favourite recipes for those times you have access to a kitchen?   When travelling for long periods, you want some semblance of normality after a while – and these small items can help. The people who travel for the longest tend to be the people who master this ability to create a non-travel life the best temporarily. Think of yourself as being an expatriate for a while, who live what many would consider a normal domestic life but in a place far away from their home.

People are reading this and wonder about the lifestyle of a digital nomad – someone who can work from anywhere in the world as long as they have a computer and an Internet connection. This is the ultimate form of prolonged travel, and with the ability to earn an income on the way. However, there are many incorrect perceptions, and I’ll soon be publishing a page ‘The Fallacies of Being a Digital Nomad’.

What Is an Extended Stay Hotel? Your Complete Guide

modern kitchen at extended stay hotel

The growth of extended stay hotels has reached a record high in recent years as more and more travelers look for safe, comfortable lodging, great atmospheres, and affordable rates. As construction rates for this property type increase, so does the interest in staying in one, hosting events at one, or even running one. But what is an extended stay hotel, exactly? Here’s everything you need to know, including how they work, what types of guests they attract, and much more.

What is an extended stay hotel?

An extended stay hotel offers long term accommodation for guests. With amenities such as self-serve laundry and in-suite kitchens, they’re a cost-effective and convenient alternative to renting a traditional apartment. Because guests stay for a longer period of time, extended stay hotels typically offer discounted rates. They often feature a home-away-from-home style and will often be referred to as apartment hotels or serviced apartments.

Just like regular hotels, extended stay hotels range in price and style. Some offer apartment or studio-style living while luxury options have multiple bedrooms, more square footage, and special amenities such as private patios. They also offer amenities you’d expect to find in a regular hotel, including daily room service. You’ll most likely find them centrally located near attractions, dining, and nightlife.

How long can you stay in an extended stay hotel?

You can stay as long as the property allows, though rates may fluctuate over time. Although these hotels can hypothetically host guests for a night or two, most see guests who stay for five to seven days at a minimum since that’s when discounts are typically applied.

Hospitality questions CTA

But there are some rare exceptions. For example, the Falls Church, Virginia Marriott’s longest extended stay guest was a 79-year-old woman named Joy Bricker who resided at the hotel for more than 10 years . Over the years she became close friends with staff, moved in furniture from her former Florida home, and even created a community feel for her many neighbors.

How do they differ from other hotels?

The biggest difference between an extended stay hotel and other hotels is the price, what guests are billed for, and the different lifestyle often associated with each property type.

The average price for one night in a standard hotel room is higher than the average price of one night in an extended stay hotel room — if you stay there long enough. For example, the average cost of a regular, short-term hotel room in Los Angeles is $216 for a weekend night and $194 for a weeknight. If a guest stays for one week, they can expect to pay $1,402. But a two-star extended stay hotel in the same city only costs $714, offering lodgers 50% savings on their visit.

Guests at most extended stay hotels can also expect to get amenities such as WiFi and major utilities included in their nightly rate whereas other hotels sometimes charge fees for premium options like faster internet and movie rentals. For mid-range options, you’ll also see differences such as coin-operated laundry facilities at extended stay hotels versus professional onsite laundering services at other hotels. Plus, hotels typically offer additional lounge spaces, bars, restaurants, stores, and concierge services while this is not the norm at the average extended stay hotel.

What do extended stay hotels typically include?

The average extended stay hotels typically include each of the following:

  • In-room WiFi and high-speed internet access.
  • Televisions with apps such as Netflix.
  • Local transportation back and forth between the airport, major shopping centers, tourist attractions, and business districts.
  • On-site DIY laundry centers.
  • Fully stocked kitchens with a refrigerator, microwave, sink, garbage disposal, and oven.
  • Filtered drinking water.
  • Recreational facilities such as a pool and hot tub.
  • A gym with machines and weights.
  • Conference rooms and business centers with printer access.
  • Takeaway breakfast items, snacks, and vending machines.

They may also offer parking spaces, dog parks, and a grocery or liquor store on site. Luxury extended stay hotels may also include lounges, movie theaters, security patrol, and 24/7 guest services.

How does an extended stay hotel work?

Extended stay hotels are booked the same way regular hotels are: by phone, online, or in person. The minimum age needed to rent an extended stay hotel depends on the laws of the state the property is located in. Rates are based on your expected arrival and departure date. Lock in deals by booking more than seven nights in a row.

You may have the option to stay even longer if your room or other suites are available after your initial booking date. Smaller, family-owned hotels may be willing to work with you on your check-out date as long as you give them as much notice as possible. For extended stay hotels in popular areas during peak travel seasons, staying past your initial booking date is unlikely.

Most extended stay hotel rooms are meant for a maximum of four occupants. Guests will have to share how many people are staying with them when they book. There may be a fee for additional occupants, however, children are usually free. Like short-term hotels, they also usually offer discounted rates for seniors, military, and Triple-A members.

What kind of guests do extended stay hotels attract?

Extended stay hotels attract a wide range of guests. Their price points, amenities, and designs are often marketed towards specific groups, the same way hotels are. Simple, no-frills properties maintain the lowest possible rates in order to offer customers a roof over their head where they don’t have to worry about utilities, furniture, or other essential amenities.

On the other end of the spectrum, high-end properties with all the bells and whistles are an experience all their own. They provide luxury lifestyles for business and pleasure travelers alike and offer competitive rates.

The average extended stay hotel occupant at a mid-range property travels for work and needs the convenience of home without the commitment of a second mortgage or lease. They are often attracted to the option to cook in their own private kitchen and hotel-related perks.

Business guests who are visiting from elsewhere are often given per diem or stipend pay for lodging, transport, and/or food. You may also find couples on long retreats, retirees, and families with small children. Extended stay hotels really do attract people from all walks of life.

Examples of extended stay hotels

  • Extended Stay America at LaGuardia Airport in New York City is a two-star property offering special rooms for COVID-19 first responders as well as free breakfast and pet-friendly rooms.
  • AKA Beverly Hills is a furnished, luxury hotel with a premium location, ensuite terraces, and room service.
  • The Residence Inn in Youngstown, Ohio is a three-star property that has an indoor pool, access to local hiking trails, fishing, and boating, plus camping and BBQ facilities.

Extended Travel Affects Personality

Going abroad for an extended period changes your personality..

Posted September 10, 2013 | Reviewed by Ekua Hagan

  • What Is Personality?
  • Find a therapist near me
  • According to one study, participants who chose to study abroad were generally higher in extraversion.
  • Studying abroad likely helps travelers gain perspective on life, making them less emotionally reactive.
  • The experience of meeting new people abroad can increase agreeableness, though this is not directly related to the size of one's network.

Personality reflects a series of long-term goals that people aim to achieve. The characteristics we think of as personality are those that describe differences between people. The goals that every person wants to achieve are the ones that we consider part of human nature. For example, the core dimension of Openness to Experience reflects the general goal to try new things and engage in new experiences. Some people engage in this goal often, and so they are high in Openness to Experience. Others have the goal to remain in familiar environments, and so they are low in Openness to Experience.

Like every other facet of human psychology, personality reflects a combination of biological/genetic factors as well as experiences that influence these goals. Studying the experiences that influence personality is difficult, though, because it requires identifying the kinds of experiences that are likely to affect personality as well as studying individuals over time in order to explore how those experiences lead to changes in personality.

A fascinating paper by Julia Zimmermann and Franz Neyer in the September 2013 issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology examined how extended travel influenced personality development in a large sample of German college students. Some of the students in their sample studied in another country for an extended period of time (one or two semesters), while the control group was in college, but did not study abroad. The researchers were interested in how this period of extended travel influenced personality as well as how the new social network people developed influenced any observed personality changes.

Prior to the travel period, all participants were given a personality inventory to measure the “ Big Five ” personality dimensions— Extraversion , Agreeableness , Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness , and Emotional Stability (which is sometimes called Neuroticism). Participants also gave an extended list of their social networks. After returning from travel (or after an equivalent period of time for those students who did not travel), these measurements were taken again.

One nice thing about this design is that it allowed the researchers to separate the factors that are correlated with choosing to study in another country from the changes in personality characteristics that arise from travel.

Participants who chose to study abroad were generally higher in Extraversion (which reflects a need to engage in social interactions and to be the center of attention ) than those who did not. Those who went on a one-semester trip tended to be higher in Conscientiousness (which reflects a need to follow rules and to complete tasks) than those who did not travel. Those who went on a full-year trip were generally higher in Openness to Experience than those who did not travel.

After returning from their trip, those who traveled tended to show an increase in Openness to Experience, Agreeableness (which reflects a need to get along with other people), and Emotional Stability relative to those who did not travel. The effects were not huge, but they were reliable.

These changes in personality were related to changes in people’s social networks as a result of travel. As you might expect, those people who did not travel maintained a similar social network over the study period. In contrast, those people who traveled tended to meet a lot of new people from the host country of their travel and to lose touch with people from their home country. These changes in social networks were particularly strongly related to the observed changes in Openness to Experience and Emotional Stability.

What does this mean?

Extended foreign travel takes people outside of their comfort zone. Travelers have to adapt to new people and new cultural practices. Even people going from Germany to another EU country had to adapt to differences in language, food, and outlook. The more that these travelers engaged with new people from different countries, the more it promoted goals related to Openness. It also helped travelers to gain perspective on life, which made them less emotionally reactive to day-to-day changes (which increased Emotional Stability). The experience of meeting new people also helps with Agreeableness, though this was not directly related to the size of people’s new social networks.

A key question is whether this finding is specific to college students or would be true for older adults as well. The answer to that question is not entirely clear. On the one hand, the college years are an intense period of change for people, which suggests that these effects might be specific to college. On the other hand, it is hard to find samples of adults who are traveling who have a good control group against which they can be compared. Thus, it will be difficult to give a definite answer to this question.

However, in a few other posts, I have talked about how multicultural experiences can increase creativity . This research suggests that extended foreign travel may lead to personality changes even in adults.

meaning of extended travel

Go On, Extend Your Vacation—Everyone Else Is

A new study from Mastercard Economics Institute data shows that worldwide, people are taking one more day of vacation on average. "We found that tourists are spending more time on vacation—about one extra day relative to what was normal pre-COVID," says Mastercard's Travel Trends 2024 report. "Longer stays in destinations generally translate to longer spend per trip, too, which benefits local businesses."

The regions adding the most time, on average, to their vacations are the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. Both regions are spending an average of two extra days on vacation. Unsurprisingly, on the bottom end of the range is the United States, which averages less than an additional one day.

The other factor is also pretty self-explanatory—the nicer the weather of a destination, the more likely it is that guests will stay longer. It's not always the best warm weather that keeps people in a destination for longer, however. Popular ski destinations with cooler temperatures also have people staying for longer on average.

In March 2019, the average length of a leisure trip was about four days. In March 2024, that extended to an average of about five days. These longer stays will positively affect local economies where tourists travel, and I don't think anyone is arguing that they need less time on vacation.

If you're trying to figure out how to make your vacation longer, we've got insights into the hacks to make your PTO stretch as far as possible  and some encouragement on actually using it this year.

Per diem is an allowance for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses. The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) establishes the per diem reimbursement rates that federal agencies use to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel within the continental U.S. (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) establishes rates for travel in non-foreign areas outside of CONUS, which includes Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories and possessions. The U.S. Department of State establishes rates for travel in foreign areas. For more information on rates established by DOD and the State Department visit travel.dod.mil and aoprals.state.gov .

Please visit www.gsa.gov/perdiem  to find the rates. Click on a state on the map to view that state's rates or enter the location in the search box. Even though some cities are listed for your lookup convenience, not all cities can or will be listed. To look up the county a destination is located in, visit the Census Geocoder . If neither the city nor county you are looking for is listed on the GSA per diem rate page, then the standard CONUS rate applies.

Non-standard areas (NSAs) are frequently traveled by the federal community and are reviewed on an annual basis. Standard CONUS locations are less frequently traveled by the federal community and are not specifically listed on our website.

Per diem rates are set based upon contractor-provided average daily rate (ADR) data of local lodging properties. The properties must be fire-safe and have a FEMA ID number. The ADR is a travel industry metric that divides room sales rental revenue by the number of rooms sold. All rates are evaluated to ensure that they are fair and equitable in the GSA and Office of Management and Budget approval process. For more detailed information, visit the Factors Influencing Lodging Rates page.

5 U.S.C § 5702 gives the Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) the authority to establish the system of reimbursing Federal employees for the subsistence expenses (lodging, meals, and incidentals) of official travel. The law governs how GSA sets rates today, and allows the GSA Administrator to establish locality-based allowances for these expenses with a reporting requirement back to Congress. The law was established to protect Federal employees by fairly reimbursing them for travel expenses. In addition, if a Federal employee cannot find a room within the established per diem rates, the travel policy allows the agency to reimburse the actual hotel charges up to 300 percent of the established per diem rates.

The per diem program has several standards that it follows in its systematic structured per diem methodology. The first level is having a "standard rate" that applies to approximately 85 percent of counties in the continental United States.

It is GSA's policy that, if and when a Federal agency, on behalf of its employees, requests that the standard rate is not adequate in a specific area to cover costs of travel as intended by the law, GSA will study the locality to determine whether the locality under study should become a "non-standard area." If the study recommends a change, a change will be implemented as deemed appropriate. GSA has implemented a process to review and update both the standard and non-standard areas annually.

The standard "boundary line" for where non-standard areas apply is generally one county. This is the case for approximately 85 percent of the non-standard rates that GSA sets. However, in some cases, agencies have requested that the rate apply to an area larger than one county, such as a metropolitan area. In a very small number of cases, an agency can and has requested that a rate apply to just a city and not the entire county. In some rural areas, a rate sometimes applies to more than one county due to lack of an adequate data sample to set a rate otherwise.

GSA uses the Federal Information Processing Series (FIPS) code standard for its apply areas. While GSA often uses ZIP codes to select hotel data samples, the apply area is coded by a FIPS code, unless a Federal agency only wants the rate to apply to certain ZIP codes. These codes are managed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to ensure uniform identification of geographic entities through all federal government agencies.

In order for GSA to conduct a "special" review of a non-standard area (NSA) during the current fiscal year, a Federal Agency Travel Manager or an equivalent individual in grade or title must submit a signed letter on agency letterhead or stationery stating that the present per diem rate is inadequate. The request should contain the following information:

  • The geographical areas you want us to study, especially ZIP codes.
  • The property names (including addresses, ZIP codes, and rates) where your federal travelers stay while on temporary duty travel and those properties (including addresses, ZIP codes, and rates) that will not honor the federal lodging per diem rate.
  • The number of times actual expenses were used and/or federal travelers had to use another lodging facility to stay within the maximum allowable lodging per diem rate, which resulted in additional transportation expenses (rental car, taxi) being incurred.

All valid requests postmarked no later than 12/31 will be eligible for this review. All valid requests received after 12/31, but before 4/1 will be evaluated during the following fiscal year's annual review cycle. After all the requirements are submitted, GSA will obtain updated data from our contractor to determine whether a per diem rate should be increased, decreased or remain unchanged. We will conduct no more than one "special" review for a particular NSA annually.

Letters should be sent to: General Services Administration, Office of Government-wide Policy, 1800 F St. NW., Washington, DC 20405. For more direct service, please also scan and email your request (a signed letter on agency letterhead must be attached) to [email protected] .

The procedure and the request deadline are the same as FAQ #6. However, requests received after 3/31 will not be included in the following fiscal year's annual review cycle because the annual review will have already begun.

If a city is not listed, check to ensure that the county within which it is located is also not listed. Visit the Census Geocoder to determine the county a destination is located in. If the city is not listed, but the county is, then the per diem rate is the rate for that entire county. If the city and the county are not listed, then that area receives the standard CONUS location rate.

Hotels are not required to honor the federal per diem rates. It is each property’s business decision whether or not to offer the rate. Hotels also may or may not choose to extend the rate to other individuals, such as government contractors.

Hotels sometimes offer a "GOV" rate, which might be different than the federal per diem rate. If it is higher, you need to receive approval for actual expense prior to travel in order to receive full reimbursement. It is the traveler’s responsibility to know the federal per diem reimbursement rates, and should not assume a GOV rate is the same as the federal per diem rate. See the FTR Chapter 301, Subpart D-Actual Expense and follow your agency's guidelines.

Lodging taxes are not included in the CONUS per diem rate. The Federal Travel Regulation 301-11.27 states that in CONUS, lodging taxes paid by the federal traveler are reimbursable as a miscellaneous travel expense limited to the taxes on reimbursable lodging costs. For foreign areas, lodging taxes have not been removed from the foreign per diem rates established by the Department of State. Separate claims for lodging taxes incurred in foreign areas not allowed. Some states and local governments may exempt federal travelers from the payment of taxes. For more information regarding tax exempt status, travelers should visit the State Tax Forms page.

Yes, the meals and incidental expense (M&IE) rate does include taxes and tips in the rate, so travelers will not be reimbursed separately for those items.

The Federal Travel Regulation Chapter 300, Part 300-3 , under Per Diem Allowance, describes incidental expenses as: Fees and tips given to porters, baggage carriers, hotel staff, and staff on ships.

An M&IE study has traditionally been conducted every three to five years. Based upon the recommendations of the Governmentwide Travel Advisory Committee, GSA began reviewing rates every three years starting with rates for FY 2016.

On the first and last travel day, Federal employees are only eligible for 75 percent of the total M&IE rate for their temporary duty travel location (not the official duty station location). For your convenience, the M&IE breakdown page has a table showing the calculated amount for the "First and Last Day of Travel."

For federal employees, the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) does not make a provision for "mixing and matching" reimbursement rates. The lodging per diem rates are a maximum amount; the traveler only receives actual lodging costs up to that maximum rate. Therefore, there is no "extra" lodging per diem to add to the M&IE rate. Likewise, the M&IE per diem cannot be given up or transferred to lodging costs. See FTR 301-11.100 and 301-11.101 for more information.

For any official temporary travel destination, you must provide a receipt to substantiate your claimed travel expenses for lodging and receipts for any authorized expenses incurred costing over $75, or a reason acceptable to your agency explaining why you are unable to provide the necessary receipt (see Federal Travel Regulation 301-11.25 ).

You may ask your agency to authorize the actual expense allowance provision. The Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) 301-11.300 through 306 notes that if lodging is not available at your temporary duty location, your agency may authorize or approve the maximum per diem rate of up to 300% of per diem for the location where lodging is obtained. You should also ensure you have checked www.fedrooms.com to confirm there are no rooms available at per diem in the area where you need to travel.

According to the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR), travelers are entitled to 75% of the prescribed meals and incidental expenses for one day travel away from your official station if it is longer than 12 hours. Please see FTR 301-11.101 .

GSA establishes per diem rates and related policies for federal travelers on official travel only, and cannot address specific inquiries concerning the payment of contractors. If the contractor is on a federal contract, check with the contracting officer to see what is stated in their contract. Contractors should also check the travel regulations of their company.

GSA establishes per diem rates, along with its policies for federal employees on official travel only. Truck-related questions should be addressed either to the Department of Transportation ( www.dot.gov ) or the Internal Revenue Service ( www.irs.gov ).

Canada reveals how extended family, compassionate travellers can apply for travel exemptions

meaning of extended travel

Details have been released on Canada's definition of extended family members, requirements for compassionate travellers to get exempt, and how to get limited release from quarantine.

As of today, October 8, extended family members can now cross the border to Canada, provided they are staying for at least 15 days and meet existing eligibility and admissibility requirements . If you are extended family, you do not need a non-optional, non-discretionary reason to travel to Canada.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)'s definition of extended family shifts depending on how the foreign traveller is related to the Canadian, or their spouse, common-law partner, or dating partner:

If you are directly connected to the Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can be exempt if you:

  • have been in an exclusive dating relationship , for at least one year and have spent time in the physical presence of that person at some point during the relationship;
  • are a non-dependent child (adult child);
  • are a grandchild (dependent child of a non-dependent adult child);
  • are a sibling, half-sibling or step-sibling; or
  • a grandparent.

If you are related to the Canadian's spouse or common-law partner you are considered extended family if you are:

  • an adult child;

And if you are related to the Canadian's eligible dating partner, you are extended family if you are:

  • a dependent child;
  • an adult child; or
  • a grandchild (dependent child of a non-dependent adult child).

Exempt extended family members will also need a signed declaration by the Canadian citizen or permanent resident that confirms your relationship. You will also need written authorization by IRCC.

Find out if you are eligible for Canadian immigration

Apply for travel exemption as extended family

There is a six-step process to apply for the travel exemption.

Step 1: Your family member fills out an application for authorization and statutory declaration

Your family member who is the Canadian citizen or permanent resident must fill out the  application for authorization and statutory declaration form.

Step 2: You sign the declaration

Your family member in Canada sends you the application for authorization and statutory declaration that they filled out. You sign the form and send it back to your family member in Canada.

Step 3: Your family member signs the form by solemn declaration

Once you’ve sent the form back to your family member in Canada, they must sign the form by solemn declaration in front of any authorized official, such as a commissioner for oaths, justice of the peace, lawyer, or notary.

Step 4: Get a copy of the completed and signed form

Your family member in Canada must send you a copy of the completed and signed  application for authorization and statutory declaration .

Step 5: Request written authorization to travel

Once you have a copy of the completed and signed  application for authorization and statutory declaration  use it as evidence of your relationship with your family member and request a written authorization from us.

You need written authorization from IRCC no matter where you’re travelling from.

How you request a written authorization depends on whether or not you already have a valid travel document, such as a  Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

You should not book a flight to Canada until you get your written authorization from IRCC.

Step 6: Bring your copy of the application for authorization and statutory declaration, as well as the written authorization with you when you travel.

You must have a copy of the application for authorization and statutory declaration as well as the written authorization with you when you travel. This is mandatory. If not, you won’t be allowed to board your flight or enter Canada.

Once the form is signed by solemn declaration, you have six months to travel to Canada. If you don't travel within six months, you’ll need a new statutory declaration.

Come to Canada for compassionate reasons

Friends and family can come visit Canadians, First Nations, permanent residents, temporary residents, and protected persons for compassionate reasons.

You can apply to be exempt from travel restrictions and limited release from quarantine if you are coming to Canada for one of the following reasons:

  • to be present during the final moments of life for a loved one, or provide support or care to someone who is critically ill;
  • to provide medical support to a person who needs it; and
  • to attend a funeral, or end of life ceremony.

Before coming to Canada, you need advance approval for both the exemption to the border restrictions, and the limited release from quarantine. Otherwise, you won't be able to board a plane or enter Canada and you'll be subject to the mandatory quarantine requirements.

Each person making the trip to Canada must fill out their own application form . You need a Letter of Required Support or proof of death, as well as any necessary Site Visit Authorizations in order to submit an application.

Depending on your situation, you may not need all items in the following list:

  • be present during the final moments of life for a loved one or to support someone who is critically ill; or
  • provide care or support for someone who has a medical reason.
  • a statement of death;
  • a medical certificate of death;
  • a burial permit; or
  • a death certificate.

You may also need permission from the site you will be visiting, if you are going to a hospital or other location where you may come in contact with vulnerable people . Canada aims to process applications within seven business days, but notes that some cases will fall outside of the service standard.

Each province and territory may have additional requirements and processes for the limited release.

International travellers will also have to carry acceptable identification and a valid visa, such as a  Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), when coming to Canada. IRCC has more information on what travel documents you will need to cross the border.

Border services officers have the final say on which individuals are allowed to enter the country. Along with your exemption, you will need a 14-day quarantine plan. If you will quarantine with a vulnerable person, you may be asked to provide proof that they consent to let you quarantine with them .

Canada also offers the ArriveCAN app , available on iOS , and Android , in an effort to speed up the arrival process. It allows travellers to submit their information before arrival.

PGP to open October 13

Last week, minister of immigration, Marco Mendicino, announced that students and families would be allowed to come to Canada . Shortly after, IRCC announced that the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) would open to expressions of interest from October 13 to November 3 .

Once all the Interest to Sponsor forms are in, IRCC will randomly select potential sponsors and invite them to submit an application. Once applicants receive this invitation, they have 60 days to formally apply to sponsor their parent or grandparent.

IRCC will accept up to 10,000 PGP applications for 2020. There will also be another intake period in 2021, when IRCC will accept up to 30,000 applications.

Key Takeaways

Extended range electric vehicles combat the range anxiety that many electric vehicle owners feel. Range-Extended electric vehicles help fleet managers and drivers combat range anxiety, lower fuel costs, and maximize the use of their vehicles and staff.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the next-generation of cars displacing traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. EVs have an electronic motor that operates from a stored electric charge in the form of a battery.

EVs reduce or eliminate the consumption of fossil fuel, removing dependence on oil and thus eliminating greenhouse gas emissions. They can convert energy into motion with less fuel input than a traditional vehicle, improving overall energy efficiency. There are several primary benefits for operating an EV in place of an ICE vehicle.

Lower energy cost per mile for electric cars : Off-peak charging during night hours is available at a lower cost than peak hours.

Reduction of fossil fuels and carbon emissions: EVs have low or zero emissions of their own.

Overall efficiency in converting energy into motion: Electric cars generate less wasted heat and consume less energy when traveling the same distance.

Renewables charging: Fleets can use solar and other larger-scale renewable energy charging methods.

Read on to learn more about extended-range electric vehicles, their benefits, and how telematics solutions can help maximize your EV investment.

Electric vehicles and driving ranges

The typical driving range of an ICE vehicle is around 300 miles. Because of this, consumers also expect electric vehicles to have similar driving distances. Currently, the average EV range is about 250 miles. The demand for comparable range encourages EV manufacturers to continue improving technology.

“Range anxiety” is one of the biggest factors that prevent fleet managers from adopting an electric vehicle fleet. It sets in when an EV has little charge remaining with few charging stations nearby. The fear of potentially being stranded in a vehicle without power and without access to a charging facility is the basis of range anxiety.

External environmental factors can also reduce the range of the EV. For example, extreme cold temperatures can reduce the EV’ s range available to the driver. Without range autonomy to enable longer distances, EV fleet drivers may also feel limited in their travel distance.

But recent developments in EV design and technology has enabled extended range features. This helps address the shorter-range capability of first-generation EVs. Aside from focusing on battery technology itself, manufacturers are also providing features to recharge the battery pack while the vehicle is in motion.

meaning of extended travel

What are extended-range vehicles?

Current EV models are using new features that extend the driving range further than before. The industry is taking multiple approaches to extend the EV range. For an extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV), an auxiliary power unit (APU) is often used as a companion to charge the battery pack. These E-REVs are also known as plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The APU is a small internal combustion engine with the sole purpose of recharging the primary batteries of the EV. This small engine has its own 5-10 liter fuel tank that supplies it with energy. The output power of the APU will match or exceed the power of the battery. If the APU is not equal or larger in power than the battery capacity, the battery will continue to discharge. A common APU is a micro gas turbine. While it provides only minimal power output, it’s enough to charge the battery pack of a standard EV.

When the battery charge capacity gets depleted to a predetermined low threshold (5-10%), the APU charges the batteries while the vehicle is in operation. This recharging happens automatically with no driver intervention. The additional APU charging removes the need for long charging times or the immediate requirement to find a charging station. This effectively extends the range of the EV to allow longer traveling distance.

There are several abbreviations for an electric vehicle with a range extender. These are the most popular abbreviations of principally the same function:

EREV : Extended Range Electric Vehicle

REEV : Range Extended Electric Vehicle

BEVx : A Battery Electric Vehicle with a range extender

E-REV : An Extended Range Electric Vehicle

PHEV : A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle can have batteries charged from the grid or a range extender

4 benefits of extended-range EVs

Given enough extended range, managing a fleet of EVs can be more efficient than comparable ICE vehicles. With range extenders, each EV can travel longer distances and complete more trips without the stress of mid-day charging.

The benefit of the APU to recharge the EV can provide many benefits to your fleet. Longer ranges will improve flexibility for fleet managers. More electric vehicles will be available for longer trips. Vehicles will also be able to make more trips on a single charge. With more route choices available, managers will be less constrained in options for vehicle deployments. Here are the primary benefits of range extender technology for fleets:

Range anxiety reduction : Vehicles with a longer range reduce anxiety about being stranded on the road with no remaining EV charge. Soon, EVs with extenders will approach or exceed the range of a typical ICE vehicle.

Range autonomy: An extended vehicle range allows autonomy of assignment. Drivers can travel long distances with less restriction.

Productivity gains : An EV with a longer range due to an extender will enable more choices of assignment to maximize the use of the vehicle and staff. Efficiency benefits also depend on how the vehicles are driven.

Lower costs: Although the extender within the EV uses conventional fuel, the better range and efficiency means that refueling an APU tank is far lower in cost than that of traditional ICE vehicles. The fueling frequency will also be less often as the primary charging of the EV battery source is by electricity.

As EV technology advances, range extension will likely continue to be one of the key order-winning features of these vehicles. Some manufacturers have targeted the range as a primary selling point. Other EV producers have leaned toward premium luxury models with higher power output. Each may have tradeoffs depending upon the needs of a vehicle fleet. Below are six of the more popular electric vehicle models on the market today.

Manufacturer & Model Type

Description

The i3 is powered using a relatively small electric 22kWh capacity battery with an optional gasoline-powered range extender APU. The APU provides an average increase in range from 80 to 100 miles without the APU, to 150–185 miles with the APU enabled.

Chevrolet Volt

With a relatively short range of only 40-60 miles using the primary charge-depleting mode, the Volt may not be as attractive without its range extender. Its primary battery has a capacity of only 16kWh and has a range-extending, gasoline-powered ICE as its APU.

Audi E-Tron

The E-Tron uses a 90kWh battery pack to drive two electric motors — one on each axle. It provides an average 204-mile range from a full charge.

Nissan Leaf S+

The Nissan Leaf has been one of the most popular EVs on the market, with a battery capacity of 62KWH and a range of 226 miles. There are no range extender options as a companion for plug-in hybrid charge capability. However, extender options have been available on prior models at the expense of the plug-in capability.

Tesla Model S

This premium model EV sedan achieves a superior range of 390 miles per charge from a 100kWh battery capacity. There are no range extender options from the factory.

Toyota Mirai

The Mirai is a fuel cell vehicle with a total range of 312 miles. It operates by using a 113kWh hydrogen fuel cell that drives an electric motor. No extender options are available from the manufacturer.

Why fleets should use telematics to track electric vehicles

For fleets looking to make the most of their electric vehicle investment, telematics is the next critical step.

For many EV fleets, not having sufficient battery to complete a round-trip or not being able to find a charging station in time is a major concern. Since electric vehicles can take over eight hours to fully charge, electric vehicle fleets require a major shift in driver behavior. Those unaccustomed to electric cars might forget to stop and charge in time, putting themselves at risk of being unable to complete their job.

Because of this, planning is even more essential for an electric vehicle fleet. Monitoring data points such as state of charge, nearby charging stations, or charging history are essential to ensure every electric vehicle in your fleet can make it to a charging station and complete their job on time.

F. Suspend the effect of any statute, rule, or order that would in any way prevent, hinder, or delay any mitigation, response or recovery action necessary to cope with this emergency.  In accordance with section 252.3611(1), Florida Statutes, any such order, declaration, or other action shall specify each statute or rule being amended or waived, if applicable, and the expiration date for the order or action.

G. Enter orders as may be needed to implement any of the foregoing powers; however, the requirements of sections 252.46 and 120.54(4), Florida Statutes, do not apply to any such orders issued by the State Coordinating Officer.  No such order shall remain in effect beyond the expiration of this Executive Order, including any extension thereof.

Section 3.        I order the Adjutant General to activate the Florida National Guard, as needed, to deal with this emergency.

Section 4.        I find that the special duties and responsibilities resting upon some state, regional, and local agencies and other governmental bodies in responding to this emergency may require them to suspend or waive certain statutes, rules, ordinances, and orders they administer.  Therefore, I issue the following authorizations:

A. Pursuant to section 252.36(6)(a), Florida Statutes, the Executive Office of the Governor may suspend all statutes and rules affecting budgeting to the extent necessary to provide budget authority for state agencies to cope with this emergency.  The requirements of sections 252.46 and 120.54(4), Florida Statutes, do not apply to any such suspension issued by the Executive Office of the Governor.  No such suspension shall remain in effect beyond the expiration of this Executive Order, including any extension thereof.

B. Each State agency may suspend the provisions of any regulatory statute prescribing the procedures for conduct of state business or the orders or rules of that agency, if strict compliance with the provisions of any such statute, order, or rule would in any way prevent, hinder, or delay necessary action in coping with the emergency.  In accordance with section 252.3611(1), Florida Statutes, any agency order, declaration, or other action suspending a statute or rule shall specify each statute or rule being amended or waived, if applicable, and the expiration date for the order or action.  The requirements of sections 252.46 and 120.54(4), Florida Statutes, shall not apply to any such suspension issued by a state agency.  No such suspension shall remain in effect beyond the expiration of this Executive Order, including any extension thereof.

C. All state agencies entering emergency orders, emergency rules, or other emergency actions in response to this emergency shall advise the State Coordinating Officer contemporaneously or as soon as practicable thereafter, and, pursuant to section 252.36(3)(b), Florida Statutes, shall file the order or declaration with the Division of Administrative Hearings within five days of issuance.

Section 5.        I find that the demands placed upon the funds appropriated to the agencies of the State of Florida and to local agencies are unreasonably great and may be inadequate to pay the costs of coping with this disaster.  In accordance with section 252.37(2), Florida Statutes, I direct that sufficient funds be made available, as needed, by transferring and expending moneys from the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund.

Section 6.        All actions taken by the Director of the Division of Emergency Management as the State Coordinating Officer with respect to this emergency before the issuance of this Executive Order are ratified, and he is directed to continue to execute the State of Florida Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and other response, recovery, and mitigation plans necessary to cope with this emergency.

Section 7.        This Executive Order is effective immediately and shall expire sixty (60) days from this date unless extended.

Trump, Bashing Migrants, Likens Them to Hannibal Lecter, Movie Cannibal

Donald Trump, at his rally in New Jersey, used an extended riff about the 1991 film “The Silence of the Lambs” to demonize migrants at the border.

  • Share full article

Donald Trump stands on a red stage with his arms outstretched. A crowd is in the background behind him, and behind them are amusement park rides.

By Michael Gold

  • May 12, 2024

In an extended riff at his rally on Saturday in New Jersey, former President Donald J. Trump returned to a reference that has become a staple of his stump speech, comparing migrants to Hannibal Lecter, the fictional serial killer and cannibal from “The Silence of the Lambs,” as he aims to stoke anger and fear over migration in advance of the election.

“Has anyone ever seen ‘The Silence of the Lambs’? The late, great Hannibal Lecter. He’s a wonderful man,” Mr. Trump said in Wildwood, N.J. “He often times would have a friend for dinner. Remember the last scene? ‘Excuse me, I’m about to have a friend for dinner,’ as this poor doctor walked by. ‘I’m about to have a friend for dinner.’ But Hannibal Lecter. Congratulations. The late, great Hannibal Lecter.”

He continued: “We have people that have been released into our country that we don’t want in our country, and they’re coming in totally unchecked, totally unvetted. And we can’t let this happen. They’re destroying our country, and we’re sitting back and we better damn well win this election, because if we don’t, our country is going to be doomed. It’s going to be doomed.”

Mr. Trump, beginning with his announcement for the presidency in 2015, has frequently claimed that those crossing the border are violent criminals or mentally ill people who have been sent to the United States by other countries. There is no evidence to back his assertion, and border authorities have said that most migrants who cross the border are vulnerable families fleeing poverty and violence.

But that has not kept Mr. Trump from saying that migrants come from “mental institutions” or “insane asylums,” and comparing them to the fictional psychopath.

Mr. Trump, who often veers into asides during his stump speech, then returned immediately to decrying the migrant crisis and criticizing the Biden administration’s handling of it.

Throughout his campaign this year, Mr. Trump has frequently brought up Hannibal Lecter, once calling him “legendary” and another time referring to him as a nice fellow. In Wildwood, he spoke on the 1991 movie longer than he generally does.

Hannibal Lecter, a fictional psychopath who paired human organs with fava beans and an Italian red, was played memorably by Anthony Hopkins, winning an Oscar for his performance.

It is not clear what Mr. Trump meant by “late, great,” given that neither the character — nor the actor who played the role — have died, in person, film or the books the character originated from.

“The Silence of the Lambs” is one of several references that Mr. Trump frequently invokes during his rallies.

Another favorite is the gangster Al Capone, to whom Mr. Trump often compares himself.

“I’ve been indicted more than the great Alphonse Capone. Scarface,” Mr. Trump said incredulously on Saturday. “Al Capone was so mean that if you went to dinner with him and he didn’t like you, you’d be dead the next morning. And I got indicted more than him.”
