Tom Cruise Told Jimmy Kimmel About The Stunts He Won’t Do (And The Outlandish Ones He Totally Would)

Matt Prigge

Tom Cruise turns 61 years young this year, but he’s in no hurry to calm down. Indeed, he’s more of a thrill-seeker now than when he was young. During a rare late night chat show appearance, the movie star who had the biggest hit of his career last year and who may have very well saved movies spent a good chunk of his appearance being grilled about the death-defying stunts he would still do — and the ones where he draws the line.

On Friday, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! welcomed Cruise, who had come from the set of one of the next Mission: Impossible films by asking him the obvious question: “Did you risk your life today?”

“Well, I did get in a car in this weather,” Cruise joked, referring to the rare rainfall in Los Angeles, “so I think we all did.”

Eventually Kimmel grilled Cruise about his yen for risking his life just to entertain. He asked him something few have: What stunts does his team forbid him from doing?

“I can jump off a cliff, but don’t go snowboarding,” he said. “Or they prefer I don’t get on a skateboard.” He added, “And look both ways before I cross the street. That’s dangerous.”

When asked if he’d still be risking life and limb when he’s old — even 100 — he confidently said, “I’m planning on it.”

Kimmel then ran down a list of over-the-top stunts, gauging which he would and wouldn’t do. That included parasailing over an erupting volcano, flying a jetpack through a tornado, jumping off one plane onto another, and going back in time to kill John Wilkes Booth before he assassinated Abraham Lincoln. All of those he would do (some with caveats).

The only ones he drew a line one were riding a shark like a cowboy (they wouldn’t like that, he safely assumed) and flying a plane blindfolded. He’d also ride in a plane piloted by noted plane-crasher Harrison Ford, saying, “I trust Harrison.”

How Tom Cruise Survived Mission: Impossible 7’s Jaw-Dropping Motorcycle Stunt

Actor Tom Cruise reveals how he shot a key Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One action scene and how far back his love of stunts goes.

Tom Cruise, an expert at pulling off dangerous stunts, provides an overview of the upcoming Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One 's most insane set piece.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! , Cruise broke down how he and Dead Reckoning 's crew achieved a motorcycle jump off a mountainside ramp that transitions into him opening a parachute in freefall. "That was the first time I did it," he said over footage of the stunt's production. "When I let go, you have to make sure that I'm not attached to the bike in any way. Even my shoelaces are taped, and you let go and you start flying, and I have about six seconds to open that parachute before I hit the ground." When Kimmel questioned whether Cruise counted to six in his head, the Mission: Impossible star confessed that it was closer to eight seconds.

Cruise also showed Kimmel footage in which he does warmups before jumping and parachuting out of a helicopter eight times. He notably addresses why he enjoys performing stunts in films like the Mission Impossible franchise . "I just try to do everything I can, use every tool that I have, to entertain the audience," he continued. "So, even as a little kid, like, I used to steal lumber from, uh, junkyard, or you know, and then I'd ride down the hill as fast as I could and hit the ramp and go over garbage cans." The star admitted the bike trick didn't work, stating, "I went through it, and I split the wood in half and I went smashing through the garbage cans, and then spent the next few days in the hospital."

Paramount released footage of the Dead Reckoning motorcycle stunt's shoot in December, featuring commentary from Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie. The seventh Mission: Impossible and its upcoming 2024 sequel, Dead Reckoning Part Two , marks Cruise's fourth and fifth directorial collaborations with the director after 2012's Jack Reacher adaptation and the Mission: Impossible sequels Rogue Nation and Fallout . McQuarrie also wrote the screenplays for multiple Cruise-led films like Edge of Tomorrow and Top Gun: Maverick , the latter of which is currently nominated for six Oscars .

Jimmy Kimmel Grills Tom Cruise on His Insane Death Wish

In a rare late-night appearance, the 60-year-old actor vowed to keep risking his life on screen until he’s 100.

When Tom Cruise made a rare late-night TV appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live Friday night, there were no questions about his close ties to the Church of Scientology . But Jimmy Kimmel did spend much of the interview trying to get to the bottom of whether Cruise will eventually kill himself on screen in an attempt to pull off his latest death-defying stunt .

“Did you risk your life today?” Kimmel asked his guest, who came to the studio straight from shooting the upcoming Mission: Impossible film.

“Well, I did get in a car in this weather,” Cruise quipped, referring to the L.A. rain, “so I think we all did.”

Cruise was ostensibly on the show to promote Top Gun: Maverick , which is up for Best Picture at next month’s Oscars. He didn’t hesitate to take credit for essentially saving movie theaters by waiting two years to release the film instead of dumping it on streaming as many in the business were urging him to do. He told Kimmel he would have held out for 10 years if he had to, and as the host pointed out, he was proven “a billion and a half dollars right.”

As for the stunts that Cruise has become known for, he humbly told the host, “I just try to do everything I can, use every tool that I have, to entertain the audience,” explaining that since he was a little kid he has been nearly killing himself just for the thrill of it.

“Does your stunt double think you’re his stunt double?” Kimmel asked, to which Cruise smiled and replied, “I don’t have a stunt double.”

And yet while Cruise is allowed to jump off a cliff on a motorcycle on screen, he lamented the fact that for insurance purposes, he’s not allowed to snowboard, skateboard, or do anything remotely risky in his personal life.

When Kimmel asked the 60-year-old actor if he thinks he’ll still be doing his own stunts at 80, Cruise one-upped him to say he plans on doing them at 100. “I’ve been doing it my whole life,” he reiterated, adding, “To me, it was just normal.”

Ultimately, Kimmel ended his sit-down with Cruise by essentially asking him if there’s anything he wouldn’t do, from parasailing over an active volcano (been there, done that) to getting in a plane piloted by Harrison Ford (“Yeah, I would, I trust Harrison”) to running with scissors.

He didn’t get one no.

Will Tom Cruise Do Crazy Stunts Forever? Here’s What The Mission: Impossible Star Said

Tom Cruise talks about whether or not he'll ever be too old to do his own stunts.

Tom Cruise flying a jet in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise is an accomplished actor, but he’s also an incredible stunt performer. He's famous for being one of the few major stars that does all his own stunts, but at 60 years old, one has to wonder just how much longer Cruise will be able to continue doing such crazy things. Well, if he has anything to say about it, he’ll keep doing it for his entire career, no matter how old he gets.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live , the host asked Tom Cruise if he really expected to keep jumping off cliffs and performing HALO jumps when he was 80 or 100-years-old. Cruise was very blunt in saying that he absolutely plans to keep doing the stunts for his entire career. He’s been doing it since he was little, and he’s not stopping now. Cruise said…

I’m planning on it. I’ve been doing it my whole life. Always writing, always working on stories and writing skits. I was that kid that, I would crawl out of the attic and I’d be on the roof and I was about 4 years old because I liked looking at the sky and the clouds and stars.

Tom Cruise is clearly in good shape for 60 , probably due in part to the fact that he needs to keep himself in good shape for leading roles, never mind that he needs tp be in good shape to be able to hang on to the side of airplanes and climb up the sides of sheer buildings. While we all know the day will come when Tom Cruise will do his last stunt on the big screen, we don’t know when that day will be, and the actor isn’t planning for it. Check out his full interview below.

It certainly isn’t happening anytime soon. Cruise is in the middle of filming Mission: Impossible 8 and we haven’t even seen part seven yet, so we have a couple more movies in that franchise alone. And that assumes that the eighth film will be Cruise’s last, which seems likely, but certainly is not guaranteed. After that Tom Cruise is planning to film a movie that will have at least some scenes take place in outer space, and Cruise is, as far as we know, planning to do the actual spacewalks himself.

Making a movie in space would seem to be the perfect cap on an incredible career, but if Cruise really is planning to continue to do his own stunts for as long as he can, then even that probably won’t be the end. We'll be adding new movies to the list of upcoming Tom Cruise films for the foreseeable future, and no matter how old he gets, he'll continue to try to push the envelope.

Tom Cruise Says He Would’ve Held ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ for 10 Years to Secure a Theatrical Release

“The film is made for the screen. I made it for theatrical. We all did,” the Oscar-nominated actor/producer told Jimmy Kimmel

joshua vinson news writer

“Top Gun: Maverick” star Tom Cruise made a rare late-night TV appearance and sat down with Jimmy Kimmel on Friday, as the two talked about why Cruise pushed to make sure “Top Gun: Maverick” was given a lengthy, exclusive theatrical release before it hit streaming (it’s currently on Paramount+) — and how long he would’ve held out.

On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Cruise was asked about pressure from various people in Hollywood to put the sequel on streaming during the pandemic, as the film was originally scheduled to be released in June 2020.

Cruise explained that if he had to wait a decade for “Top Gun: Maverick” to be released in theaters, he would’ve.

“I assumed you got pressure, from whomever – the movie studios, investors, or whoever it was to put the movie out on streaming you said ‘no,’ and you held it for two years, you were I guess a billion and a half dollars right,” Kimmel said to Cruise, referring to the film’s global box office gross.

Cruise laughed as the audience applauded and said, “People have been asking for the movie for 34 years, and I figured a couple more years would’ve been alright.”

tom cruise jimmy kimmel stunts

“I would’ve held out for 10 years,” Cruise said as he answered Kimmel’s question. “The film is made for the screen. I made it for theatrical. We all did. We all made it for theatrical. It wasn’t just me.”

Cruise explained to Kimmel that everything he does is motivated by giving the audience the best experience.

“When I make a film, I want to go see it with an audience,” Cruise said. “When they really enjoy it, that’s what I want. I make my movie for audiences and you all, so it’s a pleasure. I just want to entertain you.”

Kimmel asked Cruise when he’s seeing these movies if people in the audience recognize him. Cruise said oftentimes he’s spotted by fans and he gladly takes pictures with them.

Kimmel responded, “You always do. You’re really very patient. It’s almost annoying how patient you are with everybody.”

Kimmel and Cruise also talked about the daring stunts the 60-year-old actor does in his various films, notably in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. Kimmel said he thinks it is important for people to know that Cruise is the only person doing these stunts and played a clip of Cruise jumping out of a helicopter in a remote area.

“How many times did you shoot that?” Kimmel asked. “That was dangerous.”

“I jumped off that eight times,” Cruise responded. “That was wild.”

Cruise added, “I just try to do everything I can, use every tool that I have to entertain the audience. So, even as a little kid, I used to steal lumber from a junkyard, and I’d ride down the hill as fast as I could – hit the ramp and go over garbage cans. It didn’t work.”

Cruise explained he didn’t successfully clear the trash cans, in fact, he smashed right into them. However, he said to Kimmel that from his childhood days to the present, his goal is to do whatever it takes to please his audience.

Given the six Oscar nominations and nearly $1.5 billion box office of “Top Gun: Maverick,” we’d say Mission accomplished.

One iconic mission impossible stunt terrified tom cruise's mom.

Tom Cruise reveals one of his iconic Mission: Impossible stunts from the death-defying action franchise terrified his mother when he showed it to her.

Tom Cruise reveals which stunt from the Mission: Impossible franchise terrified his mother. Cruise has starred as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible film series since 1996 and, over the years, has pulled off increasingly bold and daring stunts. Some of his most dangerous and famous feats include climbing the Burg Khalifa in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and hanging off the side of a plane in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation , the fifth film in the series that was released in 2015.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live , Cruise revealed that the plane stunt from Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation terrified his late mother, Mary Lee South, who passed away in 2017.

The Mission: Impossible star recalled showing his mother the stunt in which he hung off the side of an A400 aircraft, and she was understandably terrified by the feat and worried for her son's safety. Read what Cruise shared below:

I showed her when I was on the A400, the side of the airplane in Rogue Nation, and she was like, "Honey, is that you on the side of that airplane?" I said, "Yes ma’am," and she goes "Oh lordy, I’m so glad you didn’t tell me about that one."

Every Stunt To Expect From Mission: Impossible 7 & 8

With each installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has continually found a way to top his past stunts, and the two-part franchise finale is expected to be no different. Releasing in theaters this summer, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will feature Cruise's most dangerous stunt ever . As revealed by the trailer and a following featurette, Cruise ramped off a cliff on a motorcycle, let go of the bike, and free-fell for several seconds before pulling his parachute.

While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One will feature his most dangerous stunt to date, Cruise will likely top himself yet again with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two , which could be his final film in the franchise when it releases in theaters next summer. Franchise director Christopher McQuarrie has teased that it will feature some of Cruise's most ambitious stunts ever, close to that of his recent work in the hit Top Gun: Maverick . There aren't any official details on the stunts, though set photos have shown Cruise paragliding off a mountain and dangling off the wing of an airplane. Only time will tell exactly what stunts the future of the Mission: Impossible franchise holds for Cruise.

On his big stunts and what he isn’t allowed to do

Tom revealed that he doesn’t have a stunt double. He also shared some stunts that he was willing to do and others that he was not.

He opted out of riding on the back of a shark would not fly a plain blindfolded, but he said that he would parasail over an erupting volcano, ride a jetpack into a tornado, get in a plane flown by Harrison Ford and jump between two flying planes (“depending on the speeds”).

The actor is “planning on” doing stunts as long as he can and also revealed some of the more mundane things he is not allowed to do.

He added that his mom allowed him to take risks when he was younger but that she was now grateful to not know about some of his stunts in advance.

Doctors told Tom Cruise he might never run again after he broke his ankle filming 'Mission: Impossible — Fallout,' but he was back on set sprinting 6 weeks later

  • While on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on Wednesday, Henry Cavill revealed that doctors told Tom Cruise he couldn't put pressure on his leg for six months after he broke his ankle on the set of "Mission: Impossible — Fallout."
  • They also told him he might never run again.
  • However, six weeks later, Cruise was back on set to finish filming the movie.

Any fan of Tom Cruise knows he loves running in his movies. So when doctors told Cruise that he might never run again after he broke his ankle on the set of "Mission: Impossible — Fallout," that probably didn't sit well with the actor.

Cruise's co-star in the movie, Henry Cavill, told Jimmy Kimmel on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Wednesday that doctors told Cruise he wouldn't be able to put pressure on his leg for six months after the injury, and that there was a chance he might never run again.

"When he broke his ankle on set — he actually broke his ankle on set doing a stunt — he was told immediately afterwards by doctors, 'You won't be able to use it or put weight on it properly until six months from now," Cavill said. "He said, 'Okay, that's not okay, that's not gonna work.' And they went, 'And you may never run again.' Six weeks later he was running again. Sprinting!"

Related stories

Cruise suffered the injury last August while filming a scene in which he had to jump from one building to another. He's known for doing his own stunts in movies, including a scene in the last "Mission: Impossible" movie, "Rogue Nation," in which he hangs onto the outside of a plane as it takes off.

He's also known for running (a lot) in his movies, so much so that it's become a punchline. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes even recently compiled a list of movies in which Cruise runs most and least often, and determined that the movies in which he runs the most have better critic scores.

Despite the six-week delay, "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" is meeting it's original release date, and comes to theaters this weekend.

Suri Cruise Reportedly Doesn’t Want Tom’s Help Getting Into Showbiz As She Prepares To Start College

Despite reports that Tom wants to reconcile with his daughter, she apparently has no plans to make contact despite being a legal adult.

  • Suri Cruise plans to enter adulthood without a relationship with her dad Tom Cruise, despite his efforts to reconnect.
  • She aims to make her own mark in Hollywood and the business world, with no intention of relying on her father's fame.
  • Katie Holmes, her mom, faces uncertainty as child support ends and she prepares to re-enter the industry, possibly with a tell-all book.

Suri Cruise is almost all grown up, as she’s preparing to celebrate her 18 th birthday and head off to college. Despite reports that her father, Tom Cruise, is hoping to repair his relationship with the teen once she becomes a legal adult, Suri may have other plans.

According to a new report, the teenager doesn’t want a relationship with her famous father after being estranged for over a decade.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman adopted kids now

What Are Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman's Adopted Kids Doing Today?

Katie and suri reportedly don’t feel they need tom in their life.

Katie Holmes

“Katie’s very clear that Suri doesn’t need Tom’s money to be happy or afford the life they’re accustomed to,” a source revealed. “Katie’s made plenty of her own money and she can take care of her daughter and send her to whatever college she wants.”

There have been claims that Tom will continue to provide financially for Suri past her 18 th birthday, even though child support payments will come to an end. He’s reportedly been paying $40,000 a month since his divorce from Katie in 2012. Their divorce was settled in a matter of weeks, with the Mission: Impossible star not challenging Katie’s request for primary guardianship of their only child. Reports have suggested Tom’s involvement in Scientology was the deal breaker.

The source said that Suri is interested in getting into the entertainment industry, but won’t be relying on Tom’s star power. “Suri is going to be quite the superstar, whether she goes into business or Hollywood. But one thing that’s very clear as far as Katie’s concerned is that she doesn’t need Tom’s help to get ahead,” they continued.

Reports say that Suri is interested in studying fashion in New York, where she’s been raised by her single mom. She has expressed an interest in acting, though, as she starred in her school’s play earlier this year.

Reports Have Claimed Katie Is Worried About Money Without Tom’s Child Support

Tom Cruise smiling

There were claims that Katie Holmes was desperate for work knowing her child support payments are going to come to an end.

“For years, Katie’s enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, thanks to Tom’s consistent support,” a source claimed to In Touch . “But as their child nears adulthood, both mother and daughter are facing an uncertain future. It’s a terrifying prospect — going from an amazing standard of living to a question mark overnight!”

The report claimed that Holmes is even considering a tell-all book now that her alleged NDA is set to expire, and knowing she could make millions from revealing her side of her marriage to Cruise.

“She’s actively looking for roles and is eager to throw herself back into the industry full-time,” they continued. “And don’t forget the non-disclosure agreement she signed — it’s set to expire, too. If things get tough, Katie could cash in by penning a tell-all book!”

While Katie may not be getting child support (though her rep denied she was worried about money or actively looking for work), reports say Tom will continue to financially support Suri , even if they don’t end up repairing their relationship.

Jimmy Kimmel is reflecting on son William "Billy" John 's previous open-heart surgeries with a grateful heart as he celebrates his 7th birthday.

On Monday, April 21, the late-night show host showed his admiration on Instagram for the doctors and staff at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for the work they did on Billy who was born with a congenital heart disease in 2017.

“Billy turns 7 today and is doing great thanks to the doctors, nurses, therapists and staff at @ChildrensLA & @CedarsSinai, ” Kimmel wrote. “Billy is asking friends 'to give $7 because I’m seven to help kids in the hospital.' (he also wants a spy kit) His goal is 'to raise $100 to help sick kids.' If you’d like to donate - thank you and link in bio.”

The adorable carousel shows Billy appearing to kick the camera with a soft smile in the first photo and standing in a Lakers jersey with a basketball tucked under his arm in the second.

In another post shared on the same day, Kimmel posted a close-up shot of Billy, writing, “This boy is seven years old because of you. Molly and I are overwhelmed by your generous donations to @childrensla and kind messages. Thank you for all the love. We wish you and your families good health and great friends.”

Back in 2017, Kimmel revealed to his audience in an opening monologue that the son he shares with wife Molly McNearney had to undergo his first of three rounds of open-heart surgery three days after he was born.

“He opened the valve, and the operation was a success,” Kimmel shared with the audience when explaining the surgery performed by Dr. Vaughn Starnes, who Kimmel said is “by all accounts, a genius.”

As of Tuesday, April 22, Billy’s Birthday Wish has raised over $44,000 in donations for Children’s Hospital L.A.

Tom Holland and Zendaya

Zendaya offered a glimpse into her relationship with Tom Holland .

The two-time Emmy-winning actress stopped Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday to promote her upcoming film Challengers , when she was asked if she had ever received a speeding ticket or moving violation. She admitted she hadn’t but came close once.

Zendaya on why she has been "nervous" about 'challengers', zendaya says she finds conversations around her kissing scenes "very odd".

However, when they were pulled over for speeding, they were able to circumvent the ticket. “They recognized that he was Spider-Man, and we were fine,” she explained, with a laugh. “We got a warning, and everything was OK.”

Zendaya and Holland have been romantically linked since July 2021, when paparazzi took photos of them kissing in a car in Los Angeles. Two months later, the Spider-Man star made their relationship official on Instagram when he shared a photo of the two of them on the Euphoria star’s birthday. “My MJ, have the happiest of birthdays. Gimme a call when your up,” the caption read.

The Crowded Room star and executive producer addressed the paparazzi photos in an interview with GQ published in November 2021, where he shared that was a downside of the Spider-Man co-stars’ fame.

“Privacy isn’t really in our control anymore, and a moment that you think is between two people that love each other very much is now a moment that is shared with the entire world,” he told the publication at the time. “I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private because I share so much of my life with the world anyway. We sort of felt robbed of our privacy.”

Since then, the couple has mostly remained mum on their relationship. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Holland noted, “Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible. We don’t think that we owe it to anyone, it’s our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers.”
