Mountains & Mystics of India

Mountains & Mystics is a fantastic trip going to places many other trips don't go to India. It covers some major and smaller cities and beautiful hill stations. It has a good blend of local transportation and private transport. I personally loved our short stay in Mandi as it seemed we were the only travellers in town, and also Amritsar - The Golden Temple and the Border Ceremony. Shyam, our Leader, was amazing - preempting our every move as well as being engaging, knowledgeable and funny - the perfect Leader

We covered a lot of grounds in the 7-day tour with WTX. The WTX staff (particularly the driver from New Delhi) provides excellent services with transfer to and from the New Delhi Airport, and New Delhi/Shimla Train Station. A big "Thank You" to Mr. Prakash on his quick action in solving our accommodation problem at Shimla. It was my first holiday to India and my friend's 4th time to India, we both enjoyed our the tour and most grateful at WTX's services.

Shimla - Summer Capital of British India Tour

Shimla - Summer Capital of British India

The drivers and guides were brilliant - couldn’t ask for more from them in terms of attention, knowledge and good humour. The hotel was very comfortable but cold and gloomy in the corridors. And the long awaited train ride was long and uncomfortable and slightly underwhelming tbh. Ask for an upgrade to First Class if possible. Enjoyed exploring Shimla and learned a lot, so bar a few caveats, would recommend this tour.

Mesmerizing Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh from Delhi - 07 Days

This was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. The company we travelled with was excellent, and the food and accommodation were of a very high standard. We saw and learned so much about this magical country, more than I could have ever expected. A special mention must go to our tour leader Kishore, who was always attentive and took as much pleasure in showing us around as we did in seeing everything. I would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone. Thank you all for making it so special.

Himalayas Tour By Train with Amritsar [Golden Temple] & Shimla Toy Train Tour [10 Days] Tour

Himalayas Tour By Train with Amritsar [Golden Temple] & Shimla Toy Train Tour [10 Days]

We enjoyed the places we visited on this tour as it covered all the places we were interested in, the only disappointment in the itinerary was the cancellation of the Toy train from Shimla, which we expected to be a highlight of this tour. We particularly liked Amritsar and the guide was very helpful in taking us into the kitchens at the Golden Temple which we may not have done on our own - he was very informative. The Partition Museum was interesting, although half an hour was not enough time and we had to leave half way through the visit. The experience of the flag Ceremony at the border with Pakistan was fun and enjoyable. Dharamshala was lovely but it felt like we were on a mystery tour as we couldn't communicate with the driver about the plan for the day due to him speaking and understanding very little English. As it happened, he took us to all the places we wanted to visit, but it was frustrating not knowing what was happening and timescales. We had the same problem in Shimla. Malkeet our driver was very helpful and reliable and we felt safe in the car with him, even though no seat belts in the back. The hotels were mixed - we liked the Clarks Inn Amritsar very much but the hotel in Dharamshala was totally inadequate. No one else staying there, no drinks available, not even bottled water and even though they provided us with a menu, they did not have most things and it seemed they were not cooking at the hotel but instead going out to get a take away! They did get us one beer for the evening, even though we would have liked more. The only breakfast option was omelette and toast (which was not prepared with food hygiene in mind). The general cleanliness of the hotel. such as bedding and table linen did not make our stay comfortable for the two nights. The room was dark and dingy and had seen better days. The location was isolated so there was no where else we could go to eat or drink in the evening. We would have have liked to been able to go out and choose somewhere to eat. The hotel in Shimla was okay but not a good location for us to have any independence on dining outside the hotel. Overall, apart for the Toy train, everything went to plan and there was someone to meet us at every new destination on the tour. We enjoyed the tour.

I recently completed the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride), and it was an absolutely incredible experience. The tour was incredibly well-organized and well-planned, and I was able to see some of the most beautiful cities in India during my journey. I especially enjoyed the toy train ride from Kalka to Shimla. The scenery was breathtaking and the experience of riding a toy train was so unique and memorable. The service provided by the tour company was also excellent, with the guide being very knowledgeable and helpful. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a unique and memorable experience in India.

Travellers can plan to reach Shimla by air, by train or by road – or a mix of these.

By Air:  A direct flight from Delhi to Shimla airport is operated by Air India during the tourist season. In addition, travellers can also fly into Chandigarh airport from cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru etc. From Chandigarh airport, cabs are available for the journey till Shimla.

By Train: The closest railway station to Shimla is Kalka. Kalka is connected with many cities such as Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai, Jammu , Jaipur , Jodhpur etc. by train. From Kalka, travellers can either travel by Toy Train to Shimla (prior booking is a must during tourist season), or take a taxi from Kalka railway station.

By Road:  Shimla is connected by road to major cities in North India like Chandigarh, Delhi, Manali, Dharamshala , etc. There are good quality direct buses including Volvo bus to Shimla from Chandigarh , Delhi, Kullu, Manali etc. Many tourists also prefer to travel to Shimla by cab or self-drive as the roads are in a decent condition and it is a scenic hill drive after Parwanoo.

Now that you know how to reach Shimla by various means, let’s move on to check out the various places to cover in your Shimla sightseeing.

Places to visit in Shimla

Mall Road: Bustling with eating joints, colonial-era monuments and numerous shopping outlets, Mall road is Shimla's main (pedestrian-only) promenade. At one end of the road you will find the Lakkar Bazaar, known for shops selling handlooms and wooden handicrafts. There are many colonial buildings on Mall Road like Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle, etc. Since the Mall Road is a pedestrian area, cars can only go till the parking, from where visitors would need to either take the Lift (paid) or walk to Mall road. This is the main Shimla tourist spot to see and be seen at.

Viceregal Lodge:  For the history buffs and lovers of architecture, the Viceregal Lodge , also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, is a must-visit place in Shimla. Built in the Jacobethan style, this former summer residence of the British Viceroys located on the Observatory Hill presently houses the prestigious Indian Institute of Advanced Study. This is the historic building where various discussions related to India’s Partition and the future of India and Pakistan took place. Inside, visitors can see photographs and memorabilia from the British colonial era including the wooden table on which the revised maps of India and Pakistan were first drawn. The building features Belgian chandeliers, and walls and sweeping staircases made of Burmese teak.

Kufri: Located 16 kilometers ahead of Shimla, the slopes of Kufri are a hub for adventure lovers. A great place to unwind, Kufri offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. This tiny town offers a number of places of interest like the Himalayan Nature Park, Chini Bungalow, Kufri Fun World, etc. Mahasu Peak, the highest peak in Kufri, is yet another famous Shimla tourist spot. Tourists can reach Mahasu Peak either by trekking to it, or by hiring ponies.

Jakhu Temple: Settled at an altitude of 7,500 feet, Jakhu Temple is located on the tallest hill of Shimla, known as Jakhu Hill . The temple is known for its approximately 108 feet tall statue of Lord Hanuman which watches over the town. This temple is one of the most important places to visit in Shimla for many tourists. According to the legends, Lord Hanuman took a break at this location while travelling in search of the Sanjeevani Booti. From this temple, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Shivalik range.

Christ Church: Built in 1857, Christ Church in Shimla is the second oldest church in North India. The impressive church is located on the Ridge and is a popular Shimla tourist spot. The neo-Gothic architecture of this historic church with its stained-glass windows is worth seeing. The Pipe Organ in the church, built in the year 1899, is the biggest in the Indian Subcontinent. A visit to this church is an essential inclusion in your Shimla sightseeing plan.

Annandale Ground: Annandale, high up on the list of Shimla tourist places , was once used by the British for their leisure activities. It is famous for its serene atmosphere and pretty views. Here you will also find a Golf Club, a Cactus museum, a playground, and an Indian Army Museum. This is a popular picnic spot for tourists as well as locals. Explore the picturesque surroundings or play cricket, golf or polo to enjoy a break during your Shimla trip.

Gaiety Theatre: An architectural landmark on the Shimla Mall Road, Gaiety Theatre is one of the most historic of all the Shimla tourist places. Also known as the Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, this 122-year-old Victorian theatre complex contains the oldest Gothic theatre in Asia. An awe-inspiring example of Victorian-era architecture, the theatre complex currently includes an art gallery, museum, multi-purpose hall and amphitheater in addition to the old theatre. The theatre hosts a number of cultural and performing arts programmes in Shimla. People often compare the facade of this theatre with that of London’s Albert Hall.

Scandal Point: Another Raj-era Shimla tourist spot, Scandal Point is said to mark the place from where the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with the daughter of British Viceroy, thereby creating a scandal. Located at the meeting point of the Ridge and the Mall, today this spot is marked by the statue of noted Indian freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai. Visitors today will remember the spot more for its beautiful view of the mountains.

Indira Tourist Park: Amidst snow-capped peaks near the famous Himalayan National Park, Indira Tourist Park (also known as Indira Bungalow) is named after the former Prime Minister of India who visited this place in 1972. The park features a video game parlour where kids can enjoy some fun games. Tourists can also enjoy a wide range of activities like a yak ride, pony ride, etc. in the park. This is a good place to come to if you are in Shimla with children.

Chadwick Falls: Chadwick Falls, located at an altitude of 1550m above sea level, is one of the most famous places to visit in Shimla. Located amidst steep misty hills covered with pine and deodar trees, Chadwick Falls are a mesmerizing sight to behold, especially during the monsoons when the cascading waterfall is nothing less than spectacular. Apart from this beautiful waterfall, tourists can also visit numerous shrines located nearby.

Shimla being a hill station has a wealth of vantage viewpoints from where visitors enjoying the pleasant Shimla weather can watch an enchanting sunset. One of these is Scandal Point, where couples on their Shimla honeymoon can be found strolling down to watch the sunset every day. Another popular similar viewpoint in Shimla to enjoy the sunset from, is the Jakhu Hill. This is also popular with photographers.

You can also see the beautifully restored papier mache panels and Gothic lights of the Old Theatre.

Go shopping

Your Shimla holiday package will be incomplete if, apart from visiting the various Shimla tourist places, you don’t spend a few hours shopping for souvenirs in the local markets. Located on the outskirts of Shimla, the Glen is a popular picnic spot. It is a deep narrow valley surrounded by lush green pine and deodar trees. Further adding to its beauty are rolling hills and glistening streams, making it an ideal destination for photography lovers. Enjoy a leisurely time amidst nature with your partner and enjoy your picnic lunch. This experience can be pre-booked along with your Shimla tour package from MakeMyTrip.

Shimla, India

Visit Shimla, India

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

The 19th-century British colonial government couldn’t cope with the heat of the Indian summers and searched the foothills of the Himalaya for a cool retreat. Some 2,100 m (6,889 ft) above sea level, they found the ideal climate in the tiny hamlet of Shimla, which was conveniently surrounded by a pine forest for building materials. The village blossomed into a thriving British hill station, where croquet on the lawn, rounds of golf, and afternoon tea on the terrace whiled away the days.

Today, the government may be Indian, but the town still exudes a colonial charm. Local people are proud of Shimla’s faded grandeur, children run around in English-style school uniforms and judges leave the town hall in wigs and robes.

Traffic is restricted to the outskirts of Shimla, making it easy to explore on foot. I enjoy simply wandering through the streets, past the antiquated buildings and remnants of colonial times.

Things to see and do in Shimla

Arrive by toy train.

Toy Train Shimla

From Kalka, the train travels at a clunky 24 km (15 miles) an hour, through 103 tunnels and over 806 bridges. Ascending 2,169 m (7,116 ft) over five hours, it’s one of the steepest railway climbs in the world. These figures are impressive, but the views, right across the lower Himalaya, are the highlight of the journey. Stopping at 18 small stations along the route, you can catch sight of local life, such as the traders who dash to your window to offer you fresh chickpea dhal or a cup of chai.

Explore Shimla’s colonial streets

A constant stream of viceroys, soldiers, clerks and their families poured into 19th-century Shimla, creating a microcosm of British society. The comforts of a traditional British town were quickly built, including schools, churches, lodges and a post office. Most of the remaining buildings are now repurposed, but the mock-Tudor and baronial-style architecture has been affectionately preserved.

Starting at the buttermilk-yellow Christ Church overlooking the town, you can meander down the pedestrianized streets, which are trimmed with colonial frontages. The Gaiety Theatre, now an art gallery, once welcomed Rudyard Kipling and Lord Robert Baden-Powell to the stage. It’s difficult to miss the half-timbered town hall with its shingled eaves; it’s still the office of the Mayor of Shimla. The Viceregal Lodge, the summer residence of the Viceroy of India, is now an institute of advanced studies, but some rooms are open to the public.

Hike the foothills of the Himalaya

Many of Shimla’s hotel rooms boast views right across the foothills of the Himalaya, but to appreciate the scenery fully you need to explore on foot. A web of trails leads from the town, many well worn by farmers and traders before the British arrived. Shimla is surprisingly large, with new settlements mushrooming around the outskirts, so we recommend driving half an hour outside the town before beginning a guided walk.

One walk leads to the peak of Tara Devi Hill, and if you tackle it you’ll find at the top a 250-year-old temple dedicated to Tara Devi, the Hindu goddess of the stars. The 11 km (7 mile) walk follows switchback paths through thick pine forest, before clearing the tree line. From the peak you can see Shimla spread out below and the snow-covered higher Himalaya jutting out above.

Enjoy afternoon tea at Wildflower Hall

When Lord Kitchener, commander of the British Army, arrived in Shimla he noticed that many of his contemporaries had built elaborate summerhouses. Swiftly following suit, he commissioned Wildflower Hall, a 15-room mansion with an enviable position on a summit overlooking Shimla. The original mansion burnt down in 1915, but, ten years later, an even larger country house replaced it, which now runs as a luxury hotel.

Nodding to the days of Lord Kitchener, afternoon tea is taken on the outdoor terrace underneath fringed parasols. Tiny sandwiches and petit fours are served alongside local Himachali sidu (wheat-flour bread) and slices of akotri (gently spiced buckwheat cake). In the surrounding forest lies the hotel’s wild strawberry trail, a one-hour walk through cedar and pine trees where you might spot the iridescent monal pheasant, Shimla’s state bird.

Discover more of India’s foothills

Shimla is a gateway into the rest of the foothills region, with good — albeit windy — road connections. A day’s travel away, the foothills town of Dharamshala hosts the Tibetan government in exile. Here you can visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama and a refuge for sacred Buddhist texts. You’ll meet Tibetan refugees robed in traditional dress and be invited to try momos (steamed dumplings stuffed with vegetables).

From Dharamshala, a six-hour drive takes you to Amritsar and its lustrous Golden Temple. The holiest of Sikh shrines, the temple is surrounded by a marble water tank. Pilgrims travel from across the world to bathe in its sacred waters, said to have healing powers. The city is close to the border with Pakistan, where you can witness the daily border-closing ceremony, performed with military pomp and flamboyant marching.

Best time to visit Shimla

For crisp, clear skies and temperatures averaging a comfortable 59°F (15°C), October to November, then February to March are ideal times to visit. December and January can be quite cold and, with occasional snow flurries, are best avoided. April to June is the peak season for domestic visitors keen to escape the summer heat before the monsoon rains arrive in July.

Festivals, events and seasonal reasons to visit

  • In early October, the Hindu festival of Dussehra commemorates the goddess Durga’s victory over a demon. The festivities culminate in the lighting of bonfires to burn effigies, accompanied by music and feasting.
  • An integral part of Himalayan life, village fairs are used as a way to boost trade between townships. Shimla and its surrounding hamlets host a selection of seasonal fairs throughout the year, celebrating the first harvest, the end of the monsoon and the snow season.

Shimla, Himachal ’s capital, is India’s largest and most famous hill station, where much of the action in Rudyard Kipling’s colonial classic Kim took place. While the city is a favourite spot for Indian families and honeymooners, its size does little to win its popularity among Western tourists. It is, however, a perfect halfway house between the plains and the Kullu Valley. It’s also the starting post for forays into the remoter regions of Kinnaur and Spiti. Whether you travel by road or rail from the south, the last stretch of the climb up to Shimla seems interminable.

The best travel tips for visiting Shimla

Best things to do in shimla, best areas to stay in shimla, best restaurants and bars, what is the best time to visit shimla, how many days do you need in shimla, how to get here, tailor-made travel itineraries for india, created by local experts.

The Holy City of Varanasi

6 days  / from 785 USD

The Holy City of Varanasi

The flat, sunburnt plains of the Ganges River are India's breadbasket: a densely populated area, it is home to many of the country's greatest sights. See Delhi and all its treasures, then fly to Varanasi, the most sacred stretch of the Ganges and one of India's most intense and atmospheric places.

Tailor-made trips for   India

Deep in the foothills of the Himalayas, the hill station is approached via a sinuous route that winds from the plains at Kalka across nearly 100 km of precipitous river valleys, pine forests, and mountainsides swathed in maize terraces and apple orchards.

It’s not hard to see why the British chose this inaccessible site as their summer capital. At an altitude of 2159m, the crescent-shaped ridge over which it spills is blessed with perennially cool air and superb panoramas.

Southeast of Shimla, Kasauli is a peaceful place to break your journey from Chandigarh in Punjab, while nearby Nalagarh Fort has been converted into the finest hotel in the state. The southernmost area of the state, Sirmaur, is Himachal’s most fertile area, with the major Sikh shrine in Paonta Sahib as a noteworthy sight.

Northeast of Shimla, the apple-growing centre of Narkanda and Sarahan, site of the famous Bhimakali temple, set against a backdrop of the majestic Himalayas, can be visited in a two- or three-day round trip from Shimla, or en route to Kinnaur via the characterless transport hub of Rampur.

From seeing Pir Panjal from The Ridge to hiking to Jakhu Temple, here are the best things to do in Shimla.

#1 Join the locals at The Ridge

Shimla’s busy social scene revolves around the broad and breezy piazza that straddles The Ridge, overlooking rippling foothills with the jagged white peaks of the Pir Panjal and Great Himalayan ranges on the horizon.

It is said all water that drains off the north side of The Ridge ends up in the Arabian Sea, while from the south side it ends up in the Bay of Bengal.

During high season it is a hive of activity, with entertainment provided by brass bands, pony rides and a giant screen showing sporting events.

The Victorian Gothic spire of Christ Church is Shimla’s most prominent landmark. The stained-glass windows, the finest in British India , depict (from left to right) Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, Patience and Humility.

At the other end of The Ridge, Scandal Point is the focus of Shimla’s famous mid-afternoon meet when crowds gather here to gossip.

#2 Spot the British half-timbered buildings along The Mall

From The Ridge, a tangle of roads and lanes tumbles down in stages, each layer connected to the next by stone steps. The Mall, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, curves around the south slope of the hill.

Flanked by a long row of unmistakably British half-timbered buildings, Shimla’s main shopping street was, until World War I, strictly out-of-bounds to all “natives” except royalty and rickshaw-pullers. These days, rickshaws, man-powered or otherwise, are banned and non-Indian faces are in the minority.

The quintessentially colonial Gaiety Theatre was renovated in 2008 and puts on regular performances and exhibitions, now billing itself as a Heritage Cultural Complex.

#3 Browse for authentic souvenirs at the bazaar

Walk down any of the narrow lanes leading off The Mall, and you’re plunged into a warren of twisting backstreets. Shimla’s bazaar is the hill station at its most vibrant – a maze of dishevelled shacks, brightly lit stalls and minarets, cascading in a clutter of corrugated iron to the edge of Cart Road.

Apart from being a good place to shop for authentic souvenirs, this is also one of the few areas of town that feels Himalayan: multicoloured Kullu caps (topis) bob about in the crowd, alongside the odd Lahauli, Kinnauri or Tibetan face.

#4 Whizz around the state museum

The HP state museum is well worth the effort to get to. The ground floor of the elegant colonial mansion is given over largely to temple sculpture, and a gallery of magnificent Pahari miniatures – examples of the last great Hindu art form to flourish in northern India before the deadening impact of Western culture in the early nineteenth century.

The Mughal-influenced Pahari or “Hill” school is renowned for subtle depictions of romantic love, inspired by scenes from Hindu epics. Among the museum’s paintings are dozens of Mughal and Rajasthani miniatures and a couple of fine “Company” watercolours, produced for souvenir-hunting colonials by the descendants of the Mughal and Pahari masters.

The fakirs, itinerant sadhus and mendicants they depict could have leapt straight from the pages of Kipling. One room is devoted to Mahatma Gandhi, packed with photos of his time in Shimla.

#5 Visit the Viceregal Lodge, the former summer seat of the British government

Some 3km west of the centre Shimla’s single most impressive colonial monument is the old Viceregal Lodge, summer seat of the British government until the 1940s and today home to the Institute of Advanced Studies.

The solid grey mansion, built in Elizabethan style with a lion and unicorn set above the entrance porch, surveys trimmed lawns fringed by pines and flowerbeds – the grounds and the exterior of the lodge are most impressive.

Inside looks a little tired, with only a few rooms on the ground floor open to the public: a vast teak-panelled entrance hall, an impressive library (formerly the ballroom) and the guest room.

The conference room, hung with photos of Nehru, Jinnah and Gandhi, was the scene of crucial talks in the run-up to Independence. On the stone terrace to the rear of the building, a plaque profiles and names the peaks visible in the distance.

#6 Climb up Prospect Hill

The short hike up to Prospect Hill (2176m), a popular picnic spot, ties in nicely with a visit to the Viceregal Lodge. By cutting through the woods to the west of the mansion, you can drop down to a busy intersection known as Boileauganj, from where a tarmac path climbs steeply up to the small shrine of Kamana Devi, which affords fine views.

#7 Hike to Jakhu Temple

The early-morning hike up to Jakhu, or “Monkey”, Temple is something of a tradition in Shimla. The top of the hill (2455m) on which it stands offers a superb panorama of the Himalayas – particularly breathtaking before the cloud gathers later in the day.

The relentlessly steep climb takes thirty to 45 minutes. The path starts just left of Christ Church; during the season, all you need to do is follow the crowds. After the hard walk up, the temple itself, a red-and-yellow-brick affair crammed with fairy lights and tinsel, comes as something of an anti-climax, although the new 30 m-tall orange concrete statue of Hanuman is an impressive sight.

Unsurprisingly for a state capital that is also a major holiday destination, accommodation in Shimla is costlier than average. In May and June prices soar and it’s essential to book in advance. At other times, most places are willing to bargain

The Ridge and Mall Road

At the heart of Shimla, The Ridge and Mall Road epitomise the charm and vibrancy of this hill station with some colonial-era buildings now hotels. There are also plenty of midrange options too.

Chotta Shimla

On the city outskirts, Chotta Shimla is the place to go for a quieter stay. Located a few kilometres away, this upscale residential neighbourhood is dotted with elegant houses, picturesque streets, lush greenery, and more upmarket resorts.

Browse the best hotels in Shimla.

Few restaurants in Shimla retain any colonial ambience but standards have improved and a number of decent places complement the hotel restaurants, while the many bakeries and ice-cream parlours offer comfort for the sweet-toothed.

Around the Gaiety Theatre

For a really cheap and filling meal, try the fried potato patties (tikki) or chickpea curry and puris (channa batura) at one of the snack bars that line the steps opposite the Gaiety Theatre.

The bazaar has plenty of options but is particularly good for cheap dhabas.

How to get around

Wherever you arrive in Shimla, you’ll be mobbed by porters. Most of the town is pedestrianized, and seriously steep, so you may be glad of the extra help to carry your gear. Taxis and buses operate on the outskirts.

Taxis are the best way to get to the pricier hotels on the outskirts. The main Vishal Himachal Taxi Union rank is 1 km east of the Local Bus Stand, at the bottom of the lift that connects the east end of Cart Rd with The Mall. Another, more central, taxi rank can be found just above the Local Bus Stand on Cart Rd

Being a mountainous state, Himachal Pradesh is generally best visited between late March and mid-November, as it is freezing cold and snowy for much of the winter and few facilities remain open in the more remote parts of the state such as Spiti.

The main high season from April to June, though blessed with clear skies, is also when the touristic parts of the state are at their most crowded and expensive, thus not ideal. The monsoon can make it extremely cloudy and wet, especially in places like Shimla and Dharamsala, for much of July and August.

So the best time to visit overall is at the end of the monsoon in September and October, when the skies are mostly clear again, the days still warm and the nights not too chilly.

For a comprehensive visit to Shimla, it is generally recommended to spend around 3 to 4 days. This duration allows you to explore the main attractions, enjoy leisurely walks on the famous Mall Road, and visit landmarks like the Ridge, Christ Church, and Jakhu Temple. You can also take a toy train ride on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kalka-Shimla Railway, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

If you have more time available, you can extend your stay to include nearby destinations such as Kufri, known for its scenic beauty and adventure activities like skiing and horse riding. Additionally, you may consider visiting Naldehra, famous for its golf course, or Mashobra, a serene hill station located a short distance from Shimla.

Shimla can be reached by various means of transportation. The most convenient way to reach Shimla is by road, with well-connected highways linking it to major cities in the region. Alternatively, you can also take a scenic toy train ride on the Kalka-Shimla Railway, or fly to the nearest airport in Chandigarh and continue the journey by road.

Wherever you arrive in Shimla, you’ll be mobbed by porters. Most of the town is pedestrianised, and seriously steep, so you may be glad of the extra help to carry your gear, but it’s better to politely refuse their offer to tout you a hotel.

Shimla’s airport lies 20 km southwest of town on the Mandi road at Jubarhati. In 2017, after five years with no flights, Air India started a daily route between Shimla and Delhi . Note that antiquated facilities and frequent bad weather cause frequent delays.

The train station is a 15 min walk southwest of The Mall. The toy train connects Shimla with Kalka, where you can change onto the main broad-gauge line for Chandigarh and Delhi.

Long-distance buses use the new multilevel bus stand 6 km southwest of the centre, on the Chandigarh road. Frequent minibuses link it to the Local Bus Stand on Cart Rd.
