Minivan Towable RV: What Camper Can I Pull With a Minivan

Not everyone wants a big RV. Sometimes they feel that a camper is enough and will meet their family’s camping needs. When that happens, they need to know what kind of camper can be towed with their current minivan. Not everyone drives a pick up either.

What camper can I pull with a minivan? The perfect camper you can tow with a minivan is not a brand name camper. It is the camper who does not weigh more than the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating your minivan can handle. This weight rating is usually located on a sticker placed on your front door frame.

When thinking about towing a camper with your minivan, you have to think about weight, not brand. To find out more concerning your minivan’s towing capacity just keep reading our article. It has the information you need so you do not purchase a camper that is too heavy for your minivan.

Can I tow a Camper With my Minivan?

Yes, you can but it will depend on several factors. For example, some models of the Chrysler Town and Country can pull up to 3,600 pounds, others can only haul 1,600 pounds.

You need to check the towing weight capacity to see how big a camper you can pull safely. The next step is to make sure you have or can install a tow package on your minivan. Again, the Town and Country minivan is equipped to handle that package.

Once the tow package is in place, you attach the trailer to the hitch and connect the safety chain and light systems. Then before you go on the road, take your rig, trailer and all, and to a large parking lot and test the brakes, lights and pulling power.

The final step will get you used to pulling the trailer and give you an idea of what to expect when you are on the road. Then as another tip, you may want to go with a lighter trailer, say, 850 pounds when using your minivan. This gives you ample weight room for food and other needed supplies.

If you get a camper close to your vehicle’s tow weight, you may not be able to carry all the supplies you need.

Can I Pull a Pop-Up Camper With a Minivan?

If you can pull a camper with a minivan, you should be able to pull a pop up trailer as well. There is not much difference between the two recreational trailers and both would need the proper tow package to make sure you tow the pop up safely.

Like pulling the camper, the key to pulling a pop up trailer is to make sure you are well below the towing weight capacity that your vehicle can handle. How Big of a Camper Can a Minivan Pull?

The size of the camper you can tow will depend on the weight of the camper. It is not about foot length when it comes to towing. Other factors involved restrict the size of the camper your minivan can tow.

For example, the 2017 Kia Sedona can tow about 3500 pounds but that does not just include trailer weight. You have to subtract passenger weight and a family of 4 may weigh about 500 pounds, so now your Sedona can only handle a 3000-pound trailer.

Then there is the issue of food and supplies. If you are carrying up to 800 pounds of supplies, your Kia can only pull a 2200 pound trailer and on it goes. The final factor you need to consider is does the engine on your minivan have the power to tow the trailer?

In a majority of cases they do. Some minivans have successfully towed certain airstream trailers but they may not have the power to get the rig up those steep mountain slopes many RVers travel.

You also need to consider your driving habits and the braking power of the minivan. While you may feel safe towing a larger camper, you may not actually be safe. That is because other drivers may not be as safe on the road as you.

There is going to be a lot of subjective and personal preferences and opinions here but we found about 6 good trailers or campers you can pull with your minivan. These are on the small to medium size.

Your experience may find that your minivan can handle larger trailers and that is also good. We prefer to be on the safer side of the issue at this time. Smaller trailers are easier to handle especially when you encounter someone coming at you on the wrong side of the road and you have to make a very fast and sharp turn.

• The Ford transit Connect - with its towing package installed it can handle about 2,000 pounds with ease.
• The Kia Sedona - its tow rating is 3,500 pounds and comes with a 3.3 Liter 6 cylinder engine. That should be more than enough power for you.
• ​ Toyota Sienna - it also can handle up to 3,500 pounds of towing duty with its 3.5 liter V 6 engine. A trailer hitch is not a factory option.
• ​ Honda Odyssey - we are not sure of its tow weight so ask before you buy. It does come with a 3.5 liter V 6 engine so you should have the power to handle 3,000 pounds.
• ​ Chrysler Pacifica - its 3.6 V6 engine handles a hundred more pounds than the Kia Sedona. You can haul a good-sized travel trailer as long as it doe snot weigh more than 3,600 pounds.
• ​ Mercedes-Benz Sprinter - this vehicle may be a little larger than a minivan but it fits this list as it comes with a 3.0 liter V6 engine and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
• ​ Mercedes-Benz Metris - the Mercedes Benz car company makes great vehicles. This can be seen in this 2.0 liter V4 minivan that tows up to 5,000.
• ​ Ford Transit - It is also a full-sized van, but it handles towing like a pro. Its 3.5 liter V6 passenger version handles towing between 3,100 and 5,000 pounds approx.
• Nissan NV - Another top van that can handle the pressure of towing a nice travel trailer. This 5.6 liter V* pulls just over 8,500 pounds without breaking into a sweat.
• Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana - last but not least is this model. Its 6.0 V8 pulls over 9,500 pound with ease and may be the better choice over a minivan.

Can a Dodge Grand Caravan Tow a Camper?

The good news is that yes it can tow a camper. The size of camper may be a different story as the Grand caravan’s towing weight may be a bit different from year to year. The 2005 3.3 liter model could handle about 3,500 pounds in total.

If you take a look at the 2016 model’s owner’s manual, you will find that the Grand caravan will tow 3,600 pounds. But, that towing weight includes 2 people and some luggage. Once you weigh those elements your towing capacity will be a lot less.

It may be reduced to something like 3,000 pounds depending on how much luggage you bring with you. The type of hitch you would need to tow safely would be the Draw-Tite # 75579, which is a Class III, 2" hitch. The ball needed would be the Ball Mount Kit # 989900, which is for 2” hitches.

But check with your local dealer to make sure you get the right ball size for your camper.

Tips to Find a Minivan Friendly Travel Trailer

Everyone needs a few tips now and then to find that perfect camper or travel trailer for their minivan. Although using a minivan has its supporters and detractors, you can find some good travel trailers that are minivan friendly. You just need to know what to look for.

• Weight - you want lightweight. The lighter the trailer the more food and equipment you can pack inside.
• Design - you want a space-saving design that lets you pack a lot of gear in a very convenient but compact space.
• ​ Storage - you want good storage areas that hold a lot of stuff without crowding you out. This would include wire racks, plastic shelves or drawers and so on.
• ​ Customizing capability - you want to be able to add your own personal touches that make use of any extra space you may have inside. The ability to use hanging racks without propping the cabinet door open is a great plus.
• ​ Fold up bed - this will give you extra storage space under the mattress.
• ​ Size is not the issue - we have to remind you that the size is not the main factor in finding a minivan friendly travel trailer. If it is a very lightweight trailer then you can get a larger travel trailer. If not, then you have to go with a smaller one.
• ​ Towing capacity - you want a trailer that will be well under the tow limit your minivan can haul. This includes the weight of food, your spouse, your kids, and all the other supplies and equipment you bring along with you.
• Looks - you do not want a bad looking trailer behind your minivan, Get one that looks good and is in good shape.

As the Standard 17-foot Casita Spirit doesn’t come with a bathroom.

The standard version does, however, have a higher sleeping capacity compared to the deluxe version due to its additional bunk beds.

In addition, like Scamp trailers, Casita trailers are built to order and must be ordered directly from the manufacturer, as you can’t buy a Casita travel trailer on an RV lot like you can with most other RV brands.

Which Minivan is Best for Towing?

With the exception of the Ford Transit Connect, which only has a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds, most newer minivans today have a towing capacity between 3,000 and 3,600 pounds.

This means that any of the popular minivans today, including the Honda Odyssey, the Toyota Sienna, the Dodge Caravan, and the Chrysler Pacifica are good vehicles for towing light to medium-sized loads, as they are all equally well equipped for towing .  

With the exception of perhaps the Ford Transit Connect, due to its limited towing capacity.

If you own a small vehicle, it doesn’t mean you’re without options for towing a mini camper.  Teardrops have long been a popular option. However for some, having a bit larger trailer with more interior space, or a different configuration would be more desirable. Fortunately, there’s some great trailer options available that are lightweight enough to be towed by even 4-cylinder vehicles. Here’s some popular small camper manufacturers you might consider:

The Happier Camper HC1

• Trailer Weight: 1,100 lbs
• Length: 13 feet, including fold back trailer tongue
• Sleeps: Up to 5

At first glance it’s obvious this retro-looking mini camping trailer is a big hit stylistically. With a visually appealing look of the 50’s era, the Happier Camper HC1 is anything but retro in it’s design and construction.

At a dry weight of 1100 lbs., HC1 small, pull behind campers feature a double hull fiberglass shell and a honeycomb fiberglass floor. Support is based on a Lippert tube frame chassis.  This mini camp trailer includes marine parts and components throughout, LED lighting, as well as rear stabilization jacks. HC1 also include an Adaptiv ™ interior that can be customized to your own desirable configuration.

Flagstaff E-PRO 12RK Trailer

The Cricket by TAXA Outdoors

• Trailer Weight: 1,450 lbs
• Length: 15 feet

The Cricket Trailer is inspired by NASA, with a lightweight, aerodynamic design that is towable by many four cylinder vehicles. Multiple setup options and two different models are offered: The Cricket Camp or Cricket Trek.

Cricket is available with a multitude of options and configurations including an efficient electric water heater, external shower system, battery recharge when hauling the trailer, solar panels, air conditioning, refrigerator, LED lighting and much more.

The roof pops up for more room and ventilation, and Cricket can be stored in a standard garage.

Scamp Mini Trailer

• Length: 13 feet
• Sleeps: Up to 4 people

Since the early 1970’s, Scamp trailers are one of the original mini campers designed for easy towing by small cars and trucks. Scamp trailers come in 13’, 16’ and 19’ lengths, in both standard and deluxe versions. Don’t let it’s compact size fool you, even the 13′ comes with all the amenities you’d expect in a larger travel trailer, and tons of upgrades. The Scamp 13′ has a hitch weight of 100 pounds. One of Scamp Trailers hallmark features is it’s egg-shape fiberglass shell, which is both aerodynamic and lightweight for improved towing fuel efficiency.

MeerKat Trailer

• Trailer Weight: 900 lbs
• Length: 13 feet, including trailer tongue
• Sleeps: 2 Adults, 1 child

The MeerKat , manufactured by Little Guy Trailers, has a curb weight of just 900 lbs and can be towed by small cars. A 6’ tall individual can stand in it, and is customizable for individuals standing 6’5”. The interior includes 12V DC and 120V AC outlets. Interior has wood cabinetry, an icebox and a hand pump sink where you supply the water container. Also includes blinds and table seats turn into a queen size bed. All trailer windows open, has exterior LEDs and 4 stabilizers.

Aliner Scout Hardside

• Trailer Weight: 1395 lbs
• Sleeps: Up to 4

Aliner offers a small A-Frame camper trailer that looks similar to a pop up tent trailer when folded up. However, as you can see in the image, the main difference is it offers hard walls and a roof which provide a more definitive barrier and protection from the elements. This trailer weighs just 1,395 lbs. making it towable by most vehicles.

Wee Roll Classic Camper

• Weight: 980 lbs
• Dimensions: 5’W x 8’L (the Box) x 66″ Interior Height

The most affordable option on this list is Wee Roll’s Nomad 8 mini camper. It’s a very pragmatic solution as these trailers appear in shape to look not much different than your average cargo trailer, which ends up being a great solution for space.  However, it doesn’t take much to notice there’s more to these trailers, with vented windows on each side, and a full size side door.

The trailer sits on a steel tubular frame and 3,500 lb axle, with stabilizer jacks. It has vented windows on both sides, and a roof vent.  The ceiling and walls are insulated, and there’s a port in the side of the trailer for optional A/C. The interior walls are lined with birch and with the 6” interior height, most can stand up straight no problem.  All lighting is LED and the trailer is wired with a 4-way electrical plug, a 15-Amp motor base plug and 2 110-Volt outlets.

From this point, the interior is all a clean slate, and great option for those looking for a somewhat DIY mini camper option to express their creativity.

Sylansport Go Ultralight Camper

The Sylan sport Go is in a world of its own in terms of design.  The trailer is basically a tubular aluminum frame exoskeleton that houses a hard clamshell tent on its top.  The trailer compresses down to the height of a small tent trailer (53” tall) and you can haul up to 165 lbs on the top in this configuration. The top also extends up, creating a space for gear hauling, like dirt bikes, etc.  Here you can haul up to 960 lbs.  This is also the configuration for deploying the built-in tent which is called a tent pod. It does so downward within the tubular frame of the trailer, so it’s a robust setup. There’s 3 package levels you can order, adding things such as a solar system, air mattresses, an awning and more.

Trailer weight: 840 lbs. Sleeps: 4 people Interior: 6’5” Height, 80” length, 116” wide (sides fold out)

Casita Patriot Deluxe 13′ Mini Trailer

NOTE: The Casita Patriot 13 appears to no longer be in production by the manufacturer. Searching the used market might be a viable alternative.

Casita Travel Trailers started making small camping trailers in 1983 and is family owned and operated.  Casita trailers are based on a steel frame, with an aerodynamically shaped, marine-grade, fiberglass shell construction. The trailer is very durable and sturdy, yet lightweight. Improved towing fuel economy and the ability to be towed by most vehicles makes Casita trailers a nice option.

• Trailer Weight: 1880 lbs

Casita 13′ specs include:

• Dinette converts into double bed
• Has a toilet, shower and closet
• Sink and stove range
• Refrigerator
• Electric Brakes, torsion rubber ride suspension
• LED running/tail lights and more.

Options include interior LED lighting, Flat screen TV w/ DVD, TV Antenna w/ amplifier, awning, outside shower and others.

The Patriot Deluxe 13’ trailer would be a great mini camper for a couple with a smaller SUV or vehicle since it’s lightweight, especially for it’s size. Unfortunately, Casita has stopped manufacturing the 13′ so the used market might be your best best.

Weis Craft Little Joe

Trailer Weight: 1,100 lbs Length: 12’6″ Sleeps: 2

NOTE: It appears the Weis Craft website has gone dark, so for the time being looking on the used market for these mini campers appears to be the only option.

Pointed out in our comments by Mr. Dave King, the Little Joe is a lightweight mini camper trailer, designed for 2. At 1,100 lbs., this small trailer can be towed by compact vehicles including some compact cars, Jeeps or small trucks. Construction includes a molded fiberglass body that sits atop a light and sturdy steel frame.

• Some features include a sink, stove, seating area, bed, ample storage and an awning
• Camper interior height of 6 feet, exterior height of 7’4″, width 5’8″

Weis Craft also offers an upgraded version of their popular mini trailer, called the Ponderosa Little Joe, which includes more features and amenities.

Other Options: Of course, you could always go the route of a teardrop trailer and there’s a ton of options. Nowadays, there’s all sorts of niche manufacturers designing and building them. Many fall well within the towing limits of many smaller vehicles, making it an appealing option.

I LOVE little campers and your list is the tops of the chart. Unfortunately… the smaller it is, the more they cost!! The HC1 (exceptionally clever design!)is $17k with nothing in it!! It makes the Meerkat much more of a $$ deal. The delight is the used market for Scamps and the like. A used Scamp is easily emptied and customized with out too much of an investment. Cool costs $$!

• Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) : The maximum amount your vehicle can weigh, including passengers, cargo, and the tongue weight of the trailer you’re hauling. 
• Tongue weight : The amount of pressure the trailer puts on the tow vehicle’s trailer hitch or the fifth wheel. It varies based on trailer design and how you distribute its load.
• Gross combination weight rating (GCWR): The maximum weight of both the vehicle and trailer, plus the passengers and cargo in both.

You’ll find the payload rating of a vehicle on the driver’s side door jamb on one of the manufacturer’s stickers. The weight listed takes into account the following items: The weight of each passenger (including pets), the cargo inside the vehicle, and the hitch weight that the camper is transferring to the vehicle.

Can I Tow an RV With my Minivan?

While many families tow a pop-up camper or small travel trailer with a minivan, keep in mind that most minivans are limited to a 3,500-pound towing capacity. Minivans are built to be people haulers, often on unibody frames that offer more passenger room and comfort; their primary purpose isn’t for towing.

That being said, small campers or anything under 3,000 pounds should be fine to tow, but you have to be mindful of how many people will ride in the van and how much cargo it will carry in order to be under the payload capacity. Most pop-ups, A-frames, teardrops, and overlanding type trailers with foldout tents are all examples of rigs that can be compatible with using a minivan as a tow vehicle. 

Towing an RV With a Light-Duty SUV

Most light-duty SUVs aren’t very capable of towing campers and other recreational vehicles because they’re designed on the chassis of a sedan. As a result, their trailing limits max out around 1,200 pounds, which is fine if you’re towing a cargo trailer, but not if you’re serious about RVing.

However, as manufacturers develop stronger chassis and engines there’s a growing segment of light-duty SUV models available with tow ratings between 1,500 and 3,500 pounds, and some have trims tailored toward campers that can tow more than 6,000 pounds. 

In addition to being more fuel efficient than trucks, these are usually excellent daily drivers that offer higher seating capacity and roomier interiors than trucks. But whether or not they can tow anything larger than a pop-up or teardrop camper depends on the vehicle’s specifications and the weight of the RV, and drivers need to stay below the maximum capacity while accounting for the additional payload of passengers and gear. 

If you’re shopping for a new vehicle that can handle light-duty trailering, here are a few light-duty SUVs to consider.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This mid-size SUV is a solid family vehicle with a track record for reliability and fuel economy. The conventional gasoline-only powered Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds, but we like the hybrid version for this class. It can tow up to 3,500 pounds and delivers class-leading fuel economy when not towing.

GM built this SUV with adventuring in mind and it’s worth considering as a travel trailer tow vehicle. Models equipped with the 2.0-liter engine can tow up to 3,000 pounds with the trailer package installed, while vehicles powered by the 3.6-liter engine and the trailer package can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

Jeep Wrangler

Wranglers are adventure mobiles, and owners shouldn’t be limited to just tent camping. While both models are capable of towing up to 3,500 pounds, two-door Jeep Wranglers have lower towing capability than four-door models and can only tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Towing an RV With a Medium-Duty SUV

Medium-duty SUVs are generally considered to be mid-size SUVs that have a towing capacity between 3,500 and 5,000 pounds. Most use frames designed for their sedan counterparts, but several models have stronger unibodies with more durable engines that provide slightly more capacity. Because they have roomy cabins with generous legroom, these can be excellent family vehicles and are capable of towing smaller campers if you’re mindful of not overloading.

Toyota 4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner is a classic body-on-frame SUV, similar to a truck, that can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Compared to its competition, the 4Runner is slightly behind in features, amenities, and fuel economy, and is generally considered due for an overhaul—but it makes up for this in reliability and its bulletproof drivetrain. If you want a go-anywhere SUV, this is it.

Ford Explorer

The Explorer is a well-handling and feature-rich SUV that can tow up to 3,000 pounds, and a few trim levels can tow up to 5,600 pounds when equipped with the trailer package. The optional third row that increases seating to seven passengers gives it flexibility, while the hybrid powertrain offers high fuel efficiency and towing capability of up to 5,000 pounds.

If you want luxury travel on your way to the campground, look no further. This SUV has a towing range between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds (depending on the trim level). The XC90 has all the elements of a comfortable SUV and is a safe daily driver for the family.

Towing an RV With a Heavy-Duty SUV

The towing range of SUVs in this sub-segment is between 6,000 and 9,300 pounds. A few of these SUVs are built on chassis like a truck, where the body or cab goes on top of the frame, however, there are unibody options that tow more than a mid-size truck. Moreover, some full-size SUVs, such as the Chevrolet Suburban or Ford Expedition Max, offer a long-wheelbase option. 

In addition to offering more cargo space to store gear, a long-wheelbase SUV will tow better than a short-wheelbase SUV because the extra footprint better combats the movement of the camper. 

GMC Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV that offers the best of all worlds: a range of powerful engines, a feature-rich interior, and a gross vehicle weight rating that ranges from 7,500 to 7,700 pounds, depending on the trim level and options. For towing novices, the optional SuperCruise feature supports hands-free towing on more than 200,000 miles of mapped highways in the U.S.

Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada’s capabilities reflect the body-on-frame truck platform it’s built on, and it can tow up to 8,500 pounds. It’s a reliable and capable SUV tow vehicle that combines luxury and value, with a surprisingly low price point for the segment. It offers standard seating for eight, and is almost as head-turning as its upscale fraternal twin, the Infiniti QX80.

Dodge Durango

In addition to a towing capacity of up to 8,700 pounds, this full-size SUV comes with bragging rights when equipped with the 6.4-liter V8 HEMI engine. The three-row seven-seater also offers a 5.7-liter V8 option that can support up to 7,400 pounds of trailering and a 3.6-liter V6 for up to 6,200 pounds of towed weight.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Returning to this segment in 2022, this model can tow up to up to 9,750 pounds when properly equipped. There’s an interactive passenger display, a panoramic sunroof that comes standard, and plenty of space for your cargo and up to seven passengers.

Diesel Engines in Heavy-Duty SUVs

Diesel engines are not only 20 percent more fuel efficient than their petrol engine counterparts, but they offer more torque and durability for pulling heavy loads. If you’re looking for a diesel tow vehicle, there are a few options available in the full-size SUV segment thanks to the success seen with these engines in trucks.

Buyers who want the power and towing capability of the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder Duramax Diesel engine coupled with the comfort and seating capacity of an SUV should consider the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, or Cadillac Escalade. Several smaller SUVs also offer diesel options, such as the Audi Q7 and Land Rover Velar, but with a much lower towing capacity. 

Electric SUVs and Towing

The Tesla Model X, which has a 5,000-pound towing capacity, has been on the market for a few years now. And because it’s an electric vehicle with towing capability, the automotive industry is using it as a test mule to see how EVs will tow in the future. When tested while towing an RV, the range of the vehicle is reduced by more than 60 percent. For example, you should only expect to get around 100 miles of range when towing a camper with the Model X (compared to a 340-mile range when not towing). 

The other drawback that EV owners experience is that most charging stations are designed for single vehicles, and stations with pull-throughs for trailers are few and far between. It’s also difficult to find Supercharger stations around national and state parks, so your route will be dictated by charging station locations.

The good news is that the electric segment is growing, in particular the SUV sub-segment. GMC recently released the Hummer EV, which can tow up to 7,500 pounds, and the new Rivian R1S touts a 7,700-pound towing capacity, which would put these among the top tow vehicles in the SUV segment—but we have yet to see what the range is when towing a travel trailer. Smaller electric SUVs are also available and can tow lighter-weight trailers, but they’re not designed for towing large RVs.

Use this guide to help understand the towing capacity range of the SUV you want to use as a tow vehicle. Make sure to do more research with specific models’ towing guides to determine which model and trim level have the right combination of payload and features to match your style and budget.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

13 of the Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

Life is full of limits, which is why the RV lifestyle is so appealing. It allows people from all walks of life to travel and explore. Just take a look at the parking lot of the Grand Canyon. You’ll see RVs of every type, length, weight, and manufacturer from every corner of the country. Many RV consumers have a desire to keep their more fuel-efficient vehicles, yet they still want a travel trailer that has all the amenities needed to take week-long trips. New construction materials are making RVs lighter, stronger, and more versatile. Features that exist in 30 plus foot coaches are now seen in trailers as small as 15 feet or less – small travel trailers.

The small RV category is unique unto itself. Big-name manufacturers compete with independent small companies. Many of the small companies create new technologies the big names haven’t even thought of yet. For our discussion, we will define small travel trailers by the following criteria:

• They are self-contained- this means that all features are within the coach itself. Trailers that only have outdoor kitchens fall within another category.
• The coach does not have an interior length of more than 23 feet in length. They may be a part of a series that have floorplans that exceed this length, but we will define this.
• Dry weights will not exceed 3,500 pounds. We will focus our attention on those that are the lightest in weight. Some do go as high as 4,000, but this is an effect of materials used. Some of the trailers are a part of a series that extend out of the small travel trailer parameters. We will feature those models that fall within our small trailer limits.

Here are the 13 Best Small Travel Trailers on the Market

1. jayco hummingbird.

Jayco’s quality manufacturing is a benchmark in the industry. The Hummingbird line is a great introduction to the small and compact category. Each floorplan gives great examples of small trailer features. Yet their self-contained models also have full feature amenities as well.

The 17MBS is 19.9 feet in length and has a 3,095-pound dry weight. The front has a murphy bed that shares space with a sofa. This is a feature that many manufacturers use as a space saver. As a trade-off, Jayco gives you a separate toilet and shower instead of a combined wet bath for an amenity balance.

This particular coach is an off-road model with 15 inch Goodyear mud tires and a raised chassis. They seal the underbelly with a layer of Astro-Foil to protect it and as an insulator. Despite its size, there is still plenty of space for linens, wardrobe, and pantry items within.

The 17RK is the exact length and dry weight of the 17MBS but is very different. The front of the coach has a permanent queen-size bed. It has a driver-side slide out that with a U-shaped dinette and refrigerator/microwave. The kitchen counter takes up the entire width of the rear. The tradeoff is a combination wet bath.

As you can see, Jayco does a lot with the space. Even their compact trailer has its advantages. If you are looking to get into the small travel trailer RV lifestyle, Jayco is a great place to start.

2. Casita Travel Trailers

Casita is a family-owned business that started in 1983. Their coaches have many configurations you can choose from. Their products can travel off-road and off-season with enough room to fit everyone.

Casita designs their trailers based on two sizes. Their two-piece fiberglass shells come in either 16 feet or 17 feet. Each size then has a standard or deluxe package. The deluxe models offer an all-in-one toilet/shower wet bath and black water holding tank.

Standard packages use the wet bath area for added storage or sitting/sleeping space. This allows for more people to be comfortable. It also means you would have to rely on campground facilities for restrooms and showers. If your camping style is more off-grid, the deluxe package may fit your needs better.

Casita matches a floorplan with a model. This means that if you want the two- twin bed floorplan, you would choose the Independence model. Whichever model you choose, weight and pricing are the same. The manufacturer sets the price of their products.

• The 16-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,185 pounds and is $19,279.
• The 17-foot standard dry weight is 2,210 pounds and is $18,320.
• The 17-foot deluxe dry weight is 2,480 pounds and is $20,289.

3. Scamp Trailers

• 13 to 16 feet in length
• 1,200- 2,000 pounds dry weight
• 7 different floorplans
• Between $15,000- $20,000

The Scamp Travel Trailer – the iconic small travel trailers – has been a Minnesota manufacturer since 1972. Instead of mass production, each coach is built to the customer’s specifications. They can choose the size, layout, and interior features they want.

According to some owners, the building time took a matter of a few weeks. What they enjoyed the most out of the experience was the interactive experience. The manufacturer sent pictures and answered questions during the whole process.

Once completed, customers pick up their unit at Scamp’s headquarters in Backus, Minnesota. If the customer can’t get there, Scamp will go the extra mile to help their customers out. The company can deliver the RV to the customer anywhere in the continental United States.

Scamp has three sizes. The 13 and 16-foot models are small travel trailers, and the 19 is a fifth wheel . Each size has a standard and deluxe version. The 13 foot has two layouts, while the 16 foot has five. Some models have a combination toilet/shower wet baths, others do not.

Costs are unique to each trailer. Scamp does not publish their starting prices. Some owners have discussed their pricing on forums across the internet. Generally, these price points have come in between $15,000 to $20,000 depending on the model, package, and additional features they have chosen.

The 13-foot standard layouts give you either a sofa or a dinette upfront. The first layout gives you a sofa that can convert into a bunk bed. The second layout replaces the sofa for a wet bath and a second closet. In the deluxe version, the choice is between a dinette or a wet bath.

The features that stay constant are the rear dinettes that fold out to make the master bedroom. They also come with full kitchens that include sinks and small refrigerators.

Standard models offer a more basic approach to camping. Kitchens have a 1.9 cubic foot refrigerator as a part of additional packages. Many electronic features like TV hookups are optional. Customers that want to choose individual amenities may decide on these models.

Deluxe models have more of a complete package offering than the standard models. Bigger features and amenities are available. Many electronics like TV hookups, air conditioners, vinyl flooring, and other high-end features can be added.

4. Airstream Bambi

• 16 to 22 feet in length
• 3,000- 4,000 pounds dry weight
• 4 different floorplans
• Sleeps up to 4 people
• $49,000 to $58,000

With the retirement of the Sport, Airstream further developed their Bambi series. This small coach gave the company the ability to join in on the small travel trailers market. It also stays within the weight capacities small coach campers are looking for.

It comes in a 16, 19, 20, and 22-foot floor plan. Each one has a fixed double bed, dinette, full kitchen, and bathroom. The 16-foot model has a combined wet bath, but the others have full bathrooms. Each dinette folds down to allow an additional two sleepers.

The Bambi is spacious for its size. Airstream uses light colors in the coach to keep the interior bright and enhance the open feel. They also keep to their European styling to give the unit a sophisticated look.

As expected, Airstream uses only the best when it comes to its amenities. The bed has a memory foam mattress. The entertainment system uses JBL sound equipment and an LED TV. There are also USB ports and LED lights throughout the RV itself.

Each coach has an optional solar panel system that can be factory installed. Otherwise, each one comes prewired for external solar panel setups.

The KZ Escape series is the most versatile series on our list. Within the 11 floorplans, seven of them fit into our definition of small travel trailers. Among them, there are hybrids, slideouts, and even a toy hauler that measure within 22 feet or less.

KZ designs this series with everybody in mind. Their one of the models caters to the off-road enthusiast. The E191BH sits higher and comes with 15-inch mud tires. It also has electronic-controlled heated holding tanks that help with off-season camping.

The E171MB has a unique storage feature. On the slide-out that holds the refrigerator is a storage space that has both an inside and outside access. It also has a queen-size murphy bed that shares its space with a sofa. The coach has a full bathroom and kitchen that completes the interior space.

The E171 MB is 19.8 feet in length and has a dry weight of 3,170 pounds. Your midsize-SUV won’t have any problems towing this coach.

6. Little Guy Travel Trailers

• 17.2- 21.0 feet in length
• 1,993- 3,140 pounds dry weight
• 17 different floorplans
• Sleep up to 3 people
• $20,000- $30,000

Little Guy Trailer Company has reinvigorated the teardrop trailer for the 21st century. This RV maker has created a self-contained teardrop with modern conveniences. They keep with the tradition of the teardrop by keeping tow weights at car towing capacities.

Little Guy Mini Max is light enough to use your car/SUV crossover, yet gives you features of a full-size RV. The bright maple hardwood cabinetry contains a full kitchen. This also includes a category-leading four cubic foot fridge. Many RVs of this size don’t have refrigerators this large.

The Little Guy Max is four feet long and weighs in a little under 2,000 pounds. Many 21-foot trailers weigh more than this. One of the great features of this coach is the ability to hook up your small SUV as your tow vehicle.

The versatility of the dinette is quite special. Most fold down to a double bed. This one gives you the option of either two twin beds or a queen-size configuration. This works by having the dinette on a hydraulic and sliding bed slats that support the middle of the bed.

A lot of thought went into the wet bath of these coaches. Toilet paper covers are waterproof. The shower uses 2.2 gallons a minute to conserve water. The space allows a person to move around without knocking into the toilet while cleaning off.

RV Pro Magazine rated the Little Guy Max Best in Show for 2018 at the RVIA National RV Trade Show. The RV maker won for its nostalgic styling, modern features, and amount of storage for its size.

7. Forest River R-Pod

The Forest River R-Pod is celebrating its 10th year in production. Many of the features and amenities on this RV borrow from its big brothers and sisters. With 15 different floorplans to choose from, there is an R-Pod for everyone in this small category.

The 10th-anniversary package comes with many upgraded standard features. Furrion sound systems, solar charging ports, and seamless kitchen countertops are some. Other popular features include a pet-friendly frame-mounted utility hook for your dog.

Most of the floorplans have permanent queen-size beds. Other sleeping spaces include fold-down dinettes, bunk beds, and murphy beds. The R-Pod is a master of the ability to make the most of the space in its coach. This is why it has been so popular for so long.

Popular add-ons include a solar panel system with a 110-watt panel and a 1,000-watt inverter. Some models can have a factory built-in outdoor kitchen added as well. The R-Pod has a screen room that attaches to your awning to complete your outdoor space.

8. Homegrown Trailers- Timberline

When tent camping does not work out for the whole family, most get into the RV lifestyle. The founder of Homegrown Trailers took that a step further. He and his team built a trailer out of sustainable materials in Kirkland, Washington.

The Timberline is an 18.10-foot travel trailer that uses green materials in its construction. Both the interior and exterior are made from wood paneling. Wool insulation creates a strong barrier against the outdoor temperatures.

The off-grid package has a 600-800 solar panel wattage to power all the electronic needs of the coach. The wet bath area gives you the option of a clean or composting toilet. For easy access, the grey water tank is external and simple to drain.

Everything about this coach is green and sustainable. They did not forget about styling and comfort. The aerodynamic shape is teardrop inspired to cut down on wind resistance. There is plenty of headroom and floorspace to allow up to five people to move around.

The coach has plenty of modern conveniences too. A full kitchen with a refrigerator allows meal preparation. Heat and air conditioning units are optional add-ons as well.

9. Oliver Travel Trailers

• 18.5- 23.6 feet in length
• 3,400- 4,600 pounds dry weight
• 6 different floorplans
• $48,900- $55,900

When you buy an Oliver Travel Trailer (a.k.a. “Ollie”), you become a member of the club. Oliver sells its trailers factory direct. They only build them per customer order. Once built, buyers pick up their trailers at the factory in Hohenwald, Tennessee.

Currently, Ollie makes the Elite I and II. The Elite I has two floorplans, and Elite II has four. The main bed is either permanent or a fold-down dinette. The third sleeping space is either a twin bed or two-seater dinette that folds down.

Ollies come with many standard features that compete with many big names in the RV world. What makes Ollie so unique are the many add-ons that others don’t offer. One surprising option is dual awnings. One for the door side, and another for the opposite side of the coach.

They also offer thought-provoking ideas. Specialized materials that clear away moisture from condensation areas. External storage baskets and receivers for bike racks. Propane water heaters and various electronic signal boosters. There are many other optional add-ons worth exploring.

Once a customer has worked with their sales representative, the order goes to the factory. Production time can take 8 to 10 weeks to build your RV. Once it’s ready, the customer comes to the factory and spends their first night in their new coach.

The buying process is as unique as the trailer itself.

10. Lance Trailer

Of the many big names that need mention, Lance is the unexpected winner. Their lineup offers nine models that are 22 feet or less in length. Only three of them have a dry weight under 4,000 pounds. They may be heavy, but their design is extraordinary.

In fact, one of their models, the Lance 2075 is the Best in Show award winner with RV Pro Magazine for 2020 . This model won due to its best technique of separating the bedroom area from the living room space. It has a queen-size bed in front and a U-shaped dinette in the rear that is on a slide-out.

The lightest model makes the best use of its 14 feet of interior space. It has a front sofa that folds out to a double bed. The rear has a full bathroom instead of a wet bath. It also includes a full kitchen.

Instead of trying to squeeze in a dinette, the designers placed two padded chairs with a small table. This allows the RVers to sit and relax in front of a big picture window. No matter how it’s used, there is still a feeling of spaciousness and relaxation.

If you look at Lance’s line up, all the models they have a focus on one point. Their small travel trailers give their users the most use of open space. The company wants its customers to have a relaxing experience, no matter the length of the RV.

11. Happier Camper

• 10 feet in length
• 1,100 pounds dry weight
• Numerous different floorplans
• $24,950 starting price

Have you ever looked around your RV and said to yourself, “I wish I had…?” If you owned an HC1 from Happier Camper, your response might be, “I have a box for that.”

This Los Angeles, California company has taken modular camping to the next level. The basis of the coach’s interior starts with 20-inch x 20-inch plastic boxes. Some are for storage. Others are more complicated. One can be the deluxe kitchen with pull out fridge, stove, and sink. Another could hold the wooden countertops for tables.

To configure the things you need, you place and stack the boxes according to what you need at the time. If you need to use the kitchen and dinette, you place the kitchen setup on top of storage boxes. The tabletop fits into the position between the seating.

At night, you place all the boxes on the same level and the sleeping pad over them. This gives you enough sleeping space for up to five people at night. With the large windows on three of the walls, there is plenty of cross breeze at night to keep things cool.

To add to the appeal, the designers gave their trailer a classic 1950’s nostalgic appeal. It comes in seven different colors you can choose from.

Additional options include a loading ramp to help you load your dirt bikes and other toys. A 100-watt solar panel and inverter. An elevated frame with off-road tires. To add space, they have a screen room that connects to the tailgate. You can also get a dry flush toilet.

With this weight and design, almost any vehicle can tow it. The honeycomb base and dual fiberglass shell are strong enough to hold anything. The Adaptiv components come in packages that add weight. With the components, you should assume around 2,000 pounds fully loaded.

12. inTech RV Sol

• 16- 19 feet in length
• 2,590- 3,375 pounds dry weight
• 3 different floorplans
• $24,890- $35,000

When most people think of small travel trailers, luxury isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The designers at inTech have changed that type of thinking. Their line of Sol trailers has combined luxury, unique style, and small size in new ways.

The first thing you notice is the shape of their trailers. The tilt-front shape adds space without sacrificing aerodynamics. In the Dawn model, the front panoramic windshield allows those at the dinette to enjoy the view. The Eclipse places the kitchen upfront. This gives plenty of natural light while preparing meals.

The luxury-style amenities, regardless of model, give a high-class feel to the RV. The kitchen area has stainless steel amenities that include a 3.7 cubic foot refrigerator. The flooring is a woven vinyl that is a perfect combination of style and resilience to dirt and stains.

The dinettes in both models fold out into the bed in these coaches. In the Dawn, the measurements are 48 x 80. The Eclipse is 55 x 80. When you compare these to residential beds, you get the length of a queen.

The wet baths are very large in both models. Whichever model you choose, you will receive a real porcelain toilet. inTech made sure to give you plenty of room to take a standing shower and not feel claustrophobic. Their wet baths are the largest in their class.

13. Hymer Touring GT

The appeal of European design has become a new trend in the United State in recent years. This has given consumers new form and function options. In the Class B motorhome category, European-based chassis have benefits never seen before.

Eriba RV decided to take this a step further. This past year, they decided to open a North American Division here in the United States. This German company introduced its Hymer Touring GT to America. While it may be new to the U.S., this coach dates back to the late 1950s.

The first unique feature of this coach is its expandable roof. Once opened, it gives almost a 6.4 feet height within the coach.

The current layout available in the United States has a king-size bed in the rear of the coach. This is unique since it’s truly rare for small travel trailers to have a permanent bed of this size. The front of the coach has a fold-down dinette that can accommodate an additional sleeper.

The cabinetry follows European style with its rounded fronts. This gives additional inches to each storage space. The faucet folds down into the sink and has a cover that folds on top of it. The two-burner gas stove also has a cover. This allows the added counter space for meal prep.

The bathroom is full-featured. It comes with a cassette toilet that has it’s own external bay for easy draining. The shower is big enough to clean up without banging your arms against the walls.

Another unique feature is their window and door screens. For the door, there is a hidden screen that pulls out from the side. Pull-down sunscreens and privacy shades act as screens as well. When you open the windows, the hatches act as hard-shell awnings to prevent rain and other weather from coming into the coach.

The next van on our list has perhaps one of the nicest interiors in any of the small camper vans I’ve seen on our travels through the Van-i-verse. We’re heading back to our friends at Love Campers for this tasty looking VW Caddy conversion, and boy is it special.

Until writing this article, I had never really considered how much you can actually do with a mini camper or an uber-compact van. But this fully kitted out stealth camper van has everything that you could possibly ask for and more. And the van itself is included in the price!

The Mandalay RV conversion has a similar style rock-n-roll seat/bed combo as the previous Love Campers conversion. It also uses the same side-kitchen set up to complete the bulk of the build.

Plus a large garage-style door opens out at the back to give you access to a boot section and to create a nice through-draft. There’s also plenty of storage for all of your van life essentials including a large space underneath the cushion-clad seat.

A hob, sink, and mini fridge top everything off nicely. And there’s plenty of outlets for charging on the go.

That being said, you’re going to want to budget for an emergency fund . Because it’s always better to be safe than sorry. While you’re at it, make it a habit of stopping to check your tires, and oil.

Of course, the amount of maintenance ultimately depends on how much you plan to travel at any given time. The more wear on your vehicle, the more repairs. And in the end, your insurance plan makes all the difference.

3. Where can you go to the bathroom or shower in a stealth camper van?

With small camper vans, every inch counts. In order to get the most out of limited space, the amenities we consider vital in a brick and mortar home are the first to go when we hit the road.

But luckily there are alternatives to a toilet/shower combo right next to where you lay your head at night.

As far as showers are concerned, look up gyms in the area, or invest in an outdoor shower system . And for toilets, gyms, grocery stores, gas stations, and even parks have toilets you can use. But for those trips that take you farther from civilization, there are portable toilets available .

4. What kind of power source is best?

First things first, make a list of all of the electronics you’ll be powering. Once you have a general idea of how much energy you’ll be using you can make a more informed decision about what power source you should use.

Thankfully there are plenty of portable power sources for small camper vans. And to make things easier for yourself, there are numerous solar options available as well.

5. How can you keep refrigerated items fresh?

Worrying about your perishable items, and not wanting to live life off of dry goods? Don’t sweat it!

You can keep your food and drinks cold, even frozen. All you need is a minifridge, or a travel refrigeration system . Of course space is going to be limited, so you’ll need to alter your idea of a well stocked fridge.

6. What’s the best way to cook in a van?

So, now that you know you can have a fully stocked fridge, you might be wondering how you’re going to cook your meals. Well, there is a plethora of portable grills and flat tops available .

Or you can simply use campground grills and firepits to whip up some fantastic meals. And for any 21st century cooks, an instant pot is a gamechanger. Now the only question is what are you going to cook ?

7. What’s the best source for Wi-Fi?

Since we’re living in the 21st century, free Wi-Fi is popping up everywhere. And when you’re traveling it can be fairly easy to find a source for free Wi-Fi. National and State Parks will offer Wi-Fi, along with coffee shops, and libraries.

However, if you need a more private connection, your best option is using your mobile phone as a hotspot. Just remember to opt for that unlimited data plan.

8. Where can you park your van overnight?

With small camper vans, parking overnight can be as easy as pulling up in a free city parking spot. If you’re staying for longer than a night, you might look into free campsites prior to your visit.

Then again, there’s always a Walmart parking lot that can legally and safely be your home away from home. But having a van with a bed means a lot more flexibility in where you sleep at night.

9. How do you receive mail while on the road?

When you’re living in a mini RV van, receiving mail can be burdensome. What you’ll need to do is switch as many bills and alerts as you can to paperless. Part of the allure of small travel vans is sustainable living, so the less paper mail the better.

But for all the physical mail you can’t digitize, there are Amazon Lockers, FedEx/UPS Distribution Centers, and the option to get items delivered directly to the store for pickup. Plus you can always ask friends or family back home to forward your mail and packages.

10. Where do you do your laundry?

Doing your laundry doesn’t have to feel like a chore. It can be as easy as posting up at a laundromat. Then you can use some free Wi-Fi while you wait, and gain access to a bathroom all in one trip.

Or, if you have a water source, or enough water storage you can do your laundry without leaving your van . Then simply hang your clothes out to dry.

Self-driving tractor-trailers heading for U.S. roads

Pittsburgh — On a three-lane test track along the Monongahela River, an 18-wheel tractor-trailer rounded a curve. No one was on board.

A quarter-mile ahead, the truck's sensors spotted a trash can blocking one lane and a tire in another. In less than a second, it signaled, moved into the unobstructed lane and rumbled past the obstacles.

The self-driving semi, outfitted with 25 laser, radar and camera sensors, is owned by Pittsburgh-based Aurora Innovation Inc. Late this year, Aurora plans to start hauling freight on Interstate 45 between the Dallas and Houston areas with 20 driverless trucks.

Within three or four years, Aurora and its competitors expect to put thousands self-driving trucks on America's public freeways. The goal is for the trucks, which can run nearly around the clock without breaks, to speed the flow of goods, accelerating delivery times.

The image of a fully loaded, 80,000-pound driverless truck on a super-highway at 65 mph or more may strike a note of terror. A January poll by AAA found that a majority of Americans - 66% - said they would fear riding in an autonomous vehicle.

But in less than nine months, trucks with Aurora's systems will start carrying loads between terminals for FedEx, Uber Freight, Werner and others. Aurora and most rivals plan to start running freight routes in Texas, where snow and ice are generally rare.

For years, it seemed as though the initial venture for autonomous vehicles would be ride hailing in large cities. But General Motors' Cruise robotaxi unit is struggling in the aftermath of a serious crash . And Alphabet's Waymo faces opposition to expanding its autonomous ride service in California.

So self-driving trucks are poised to become the first computer-controlled vehicles deployed in widespread numbers on public roads.

Arguments for and against  

However, safety advocates warn that with almost no federal regulation, it will be mainly up to the companies to decide when the semis are safe enough to operate without humans on board.

Aurora and other companies argue that years of testing show their trucks will be safer than human-driven ones. They note that the vehicles' laser and radar sensors can "see" farther than human eyes. The trucks never tire, get distracted or become impaired by alcohol or drugs.

"We want to be out there with thousands or tens of thousands of trucks on the road," said Chris Urmson, Aurora's CEO. "And to do that, we have to be safe. It's the only way that the public will accept it. Frankly, it's the only way our customers will accept it."

Phil Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University professor who studies vehicle automation, agreed that self-driving trucks can theoretically be safer. But he cautioned that the vehicles' computers inevitably will make errors. And just how the trucks fare on real roads, he said, depends on the quality of their safety engineering.

With billions of dollars in investments at stake, Koopman said, he wonders how the companies will balance safety decisions.

"Everything I see indicates they're trying to do the right thing," he said. "But the devil is in the details."

On the test track, reporters saw Aurora's semis avoid simulations of road obstacles, including pedestrians, a blown tire, even a horse. The trucks spotted obstacles more than a quarter-mile away and avoided them.

But they were running at only 35 mph in a controlled environment. (The trucks are being tested with human safety drivers on Texas freeways, at higher speeds.)

Since 2021, Aurora trucks have autonomously hauled freight over 1 million miles on public highways with human safety drivers on board. There have been only three crashes, Urmson said, all caused by mistakes by human drivers in other vehicles.

A federal database started in June 2021 shows at least 13 crashes with other vehicles involving autonomous semis, including three involving Aurora. In all cases, the crashes were caused by other vehicles.

Bottom lines   

Last month, Urmson said the publicly held company expects to turn a profit by late 2027 or early 2028. To do so, Aurora must deploy thousands of trucks, hauling freight and collecting a per-mile charge from customers.

Aurora, Urmson said, won't compromise safety, even if doing so might delay turning a profit.

"If we put a vehicle on the road that isn't sufficiently safe - that we aren't confident in the safety of - then it kills everything else," he said.

The company's competitors - Plus.ai, Gatik, Kodiak Robotics and others - also plan soon to put driverless trucks on the roads hauling freight for customers. Gatik expects it this year or next; the others haven't set timetables.

Don Burnette, CEO of Kodiak, said freeways are a better environment for autonomous vehicles than cities where ride-hailing robotaxis have been running. There are fewer pedestrians and fewer unexpected things happen.

"Accident waiting to happen"   

At a Buc-ee's mega convenience store along I-45 south of Dallas, the prospect of driverless semis struck a note of fear.

"It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen," said Kent Franz, a high school basketball coach in Chandler, Oklahoma. "I've heard of the driverless cars - Tesla, what have you - and the accidents they've been having . Eighteen-wheelers? Something that heavy, relying on technology that has proven it can be faulty? Doesn't sound very comfortable to me."

No federal regulations specifically cover autonomous vehicles, Koopman of Carnegie Mellon noted. And most states have none. As a result, he said, the public must trust the companies.

Federal agencies lack authority to stop autonomous vehicles from going on the roads. If something goes wrong, though, they can require recalls or order trucks out of service.

The companies say the driverless semis can help address a truck driver shortage, estimated by the trucking industry to be 64,000 drivers. Yet there also are worries that autonomous trucks eventually will supplant human drivers and cost them their livelihoods.

Aurora's Urmson said he thinks driverless semis will complement the work already done by human drivers.

"If you're driving a truck today," he said, "my expectation is you're going to be able to retire driving a truck."
