If you’ve got half a day to space and a burning curiosity to find out what exactly constitutes British cuisine (and then to eat it) this epic trek should be firmly up your street. Tuck into a six-hour walking tour that will take you from Buckingham Palace (where you'll witness the Changing of the Guard) past the Houses of Parliament and onto the Tower of London, where you'll surely be ready for the delicious British delights that await. Try fish and chips, scotch eggs, pie and mash and a so-called famous doughnut (not sure about that last one tbh), before venturing over the bridge to peruse the sights and smells of delicious Borough Market.

2.  Kensington Palace Gardens tour with Royal High Tea

If you're after an excuse to wear something other than wellies, visit the gorgeous Kensington Gardens on a guided tour before sitting down and nibbling scones at Royal High Tea. Few Brits have a bigger reputation than wartime PM and noted cigar smoker Sir Winston. So what better way to get a feel for the capital than via Churchill’s London? In two hours your Blue Badge guide will take you to see an array of major Westminster landmarks associated with the man, such as Big Ben and Downing Street, alongside the poignant Cenotaph war memorial. Unsurprisingly, a few details in this one are a little ghastly, so it's very much open to ages 12+ only (plus the 7 pm start is past the little ’uns bedtimes).

11.  Greenwich highlights half-day walking tour

No name gets shivers running down the spine quite like Jack the Ripper, the infamous, never-caught serial killer who terrorised the foggy streets of late Victorian London. 14.  Unseen Tours

These alternative, extremely worthwhile tours are run by The Sock Mob, a social enterprise that works with homeless, ex-homeless or vulnerably housed people. And the guides who lead the four different tours of four very different bits of London – that’s Covent Garden, London Bridge, Soho and Brick Lane – have all experienced homelessness at some time in their lives. This absolutely doesn’t mean the tours are gruelling misery porn that dwells on the hardship of the guides’ lives – far from it! Actually they're fun, laidback journeys through each area's local history, with a few important details about social injustice thrown in too.

If you’re a Londoner, there’s a decent chance that you’re not so bothered about the historical side of walking tours. After all, you’re up to speed. You know it all. Today I want to share my top picks for historical walks in London with you. These self-guided London walking tours are great ways to get into the city’s past and discover the layers of heritage that make the UK capital special. If you love history, they’re perfect London walks for you to take to explore the city’s past from ancient times to modern ones. Read on for the routes, maps, photos, and videos.

Historical Walks in London

From Roman ruins in the City of London to Palladian residences in Greenwich, my self-guided historical walks in London will take you to some of the most iconic places in the city.

You’ll pass by big attractions like Westminster Abbey and lesser-known landmarks like the 12th-century Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great. Along the way, you’ll get a feel for London’s architectural history.

But it’s not all old stuff. London is a living city, and its streets and squares are ever-changing. Interspersed among the heritage buildings you’ll find colorful street art, vibrant markets, and great shops, restaurants, pubs, and cafes.

1. City of London Walk

First on my list of historical walks in London is one in the City of London . This area has some of the richest history and most important heritage buildings in the UK capital.

This walk will transport you through past and present, wide squares and hidden courtyards, historic halls and centuries-old pubs.

Along the way you’ll see everything from the Tower of London to St Paul’s Cathedral and The Monument to the Great Fire of London.

2. Greenwich Walk

Next on my list of historical London walking tours is Greenwich . This part of the city is known for its maritime history, royal residences, famous observatory, covered market, and great London views .

My self-guided London walk will take you from the River Thames to the Royal Observatory and through the markets and side streets.

Along the route you’ll take in everything from the Cutty Sark to the National Maritime Museum, Old Royal Naval College, and London skyline.

3. Spitalfields Walk

When it comes to east London history walks, my Spitalfields walk is a good choice. Spitalfields is one of the city’s most vibrant areas. Historic houses and buildings sit side-by-side with contemporary street art, markets, and pop-ups.

This London walk goes through the neighborhood’s colorful streets and hidden lanes. Along the way you’ll pass everything from 18th-century Huguenot silk weavers’ homes to pretty almshouses.

Sunday is the best day to be here, as the Sunday markets on and around Brick Lane are legendary. You can make a day of this walk if you take your time and explore them all.

4. Westminster Walk

Next on my list of historical walks in London is one in Westminster . This area is home to a lot of big attractions, including the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey.

My self-guided London walk will take you from Parliament Square to Smith Square and beyond. The route will guide you past historic highlights like the 19th-century Victoria Tower and the 14th-century Jewel Tower.

5. Clerkenwell Walk

My fifth historical walk in London goes through Clerkenwell and the surrounding area. This part of the UK capital is full of heritage. It’s home to some of the best restaurants and coffee shops in London, too.

My self-guided London walking tour in Clerkenwell will take you through historic passageways, under stone archways, and down an alley with an old pub hidden in it.

As you go from Clerkenwell to Smithfield and Hatton Garden, you’ll pass everything from the 16th-century St Bartholomew’s Gatehouse to the 13th-century St Etheldreda’s Church.

You’ll also walk down Exmouth Market, one of the best foodie streets in London. It’s a great place to stop for a meal or drink along the way.

5. the churchill war rooms.

The Churchill War Rooms is a museum in London, England, located below the Ministry of Defence headquarters in the Whitehall area of Westminster. The museum is housed in a subterranean complex that was constructed in 1939 to provide a safe shelter for the British Government in the event of a major enemy air attack on London.

Churchill’s Cabinet War Rooms were the underground headquarters used by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his government during World War II. The complex consisted of four separate parts:

• Cabinet War Rooms: This was the British government’s main command center and included a map room, the Cabinet Room where Churchill and his ministers met, and a series of offices and sleeping quarters.
• The Transatlantic Telephone Room: This was a secure communications center where Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt could speak directly via a dedicated telephone line.
• The Broadcasting Studio: This is where Churchill delivered his famous speeches to the nation, it also served as a Press Information Bureau and briefing room for journalists.
• The Annexe: This is the portion of the War Rooms that were used as living quarters for Churchill and his staff. It includes bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen. The Annexe was built to be an extension of the Cabinet War Rooms and was connected by a secret underground tunnel, It was in this area of the War Rooms that Churchill lived and worked during the darkest days of the war.

6. Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum is the perfect place to learn about the history of war and conflict in Britain. It covers everything from World War II to the present day and events such as India's independence movement and the Spanish Civil War.

The museum has several permanent exhibitions, including "Our World: Art Through The Lens Of Conflict" which explores how art and photography have been used to document war over time. There are also temporary exhibitions on display throughout the year. In addition to its permanent galleries, the museum regularly hosts special exhibitions like "Women at War 1914-1918".

The museum itself is housed in a striking building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (who also designed some of New Delhi's most famous structures). It makes for an impressive backdrop during your visit!

7. HMS Belfast

If you love history, then the HMS Belfast is a must-visit – a World War II-era naval ship that is now permanently moored in London on the River Thames. She was launched in 1938 and served as part of the Royal Navy's fleet during World War II. The ship was involved in several significant battles, including the Battle of the North Cape, the Normandy invasion, and the Korean War.

She was decommissioned from active service in 1963, and ten years later, she was saved from scrapping and permanently moored in London as a museum ship – which opened for visitors in 1971. HMS Belfast is now run by the Imperial War Museum and is open to the public.

Visitors can explore the ship and learn about its history, including the life of sailors and the ship's role in World War II and other conflicts. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Royal Navy and all those who served on HMS Belfast during the war.

8. Greenwich, just a short journey from London

During the Blitz, Greenwich, London was heavily bombed by the German forces.

Many historic buildings, including the Royal Observatory, were damaged or destroyed. The area also served as a crucial defense point, with anti-aircraft guns placed on Greenwich Hill to protect London from air raids.

9. Palace of Westminster

The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament , is one of the most iconic buildings in London and has a rich and unique history. 10. Tower Bridge Visitor Center

History buffs are also sure to enjoy a visit to the Tower Bridge Visitor Center for an interesting look at how this iconic structure was built over 100 years ago by Edward VII.

One of the fun and unique features you’ll enjoy here is the glass floor in the walkway – it gives visitors an experience of walking above the River Thames. During the construction of the bridge, these unique walkways were used by the workers to transport materials and tools to the various parts of the bridge.

During World War II, London was heavily bombed by the German Luftwaffe as part of their campaign to destroy British infrastructure and morale – known as the Blitz. The Tower Bridge itself was not damaged during the Blitz, but it was an important symbol of British resilience and resistance. Many exhibits within the Visitor Center speak to this unique history.

The bridge was used to transport vital supplies and troops across the River Thames, and it was protected by anti-aircraft guns and searchlights.

Despite the constant threat of bombing, the bridge remained open throughout the war and was an important link between the different parts of the city. After the war, the bridge was repaired and restored to its original condition.

Throughout its history, it has been reconstructed and redesigned several times, most recently in the 19th century by Sir Horace Jones, and still remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists.

The market has been used for a variety of purposes, from wholesale meat and produce market to a center of insurance and shipping-related businesses, and even served as the filming location for Harry Potter's "Diagon Alley".

12. The Jewel Tower

Don’t mix these up with the crown jewels, housed further down the Thames. The Jewel Tower is a 14th-century stone building located in the Palace of Westminster, London.

It was originally built as a royal treasure tower, used to store the king's valuables, including his crown jewels. London’s Jewel Tower was also used as a treasury and as a storehouse for the royal family’s documents and archives.

The building has undergone several renovations over the centuries and was used for various purposes including housing the records of the Exchequer, the Royal Mint, and even as a workshop for the parliament. The Jewel tower is one of the few remaining parts of the palace that date back to the 14th century, it's a unique example of medieval architecture, and today it is open to the public as a museum.

The Jewel Tower is located on the grounds of the Palace, specifically on the south side of the palace. It's situated near other famous London landmarks such as Westminster Bridge, and it's not far from the London Eye. 13. The Museum of London Docklands

Standing tall in the City of London is a Doric column built between 1671 and 1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London .

It was designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke and built on the site of the first church which was destroyed during the fire, St. Margaret, New Fish Street. It is considered to be the tallest isolated stone column in the world, standing at 200 ft (61 meters) tall.

18. The London Wall

The London Wall was built to protect the Roman city of Londinium from invasion, and it was the largest Roman structure in Britain.

But The Temple wasn't always the grand complex we explore today. Once upon a time, it was nothing more than a humble inn, established by the Knights Templar in 1185, to provide a place of rest and refuge for the countless pilgrims who flocked to the then-small village of London on the banks of the Thames.

21. Westminster Abbey

‘What Not to Wear’ hosts had a 10-year feud. Now Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are teaming back up for a new show

Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are friends again — and soon, they'll be TV co-hosts again, too.

On Aug. 26, the former "What Not to Wear" hosts revealed they will co-host a new streaming Prime Video show, “Wear Whatever the F You Want,” with less emphasis on following strict fashion rules, and more focus on embracing people’s “individual style.”

This news comes after the pair reunited publicly for the first time in a decade on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna in September 2023 , and revealed they had put their much-publicized feud behind them.

“After seeing the same clickbait story over and over and over on Instagram about how much we hated each other, I was like, ‘I can’t take this anymore.’ Because we don’t really hate each other. We love each other, as a matter of fact,” Kelly said on TODAY.

Kelly and London also opened up at length about how they worked through their earlier feud, with Kelly saying he and his former co-host have "very strong feelings toward each other."

“So I reached out to Stacy and I was like, ‘Can we put this behind us? Let’s talk it out.’ And we had a really emotional conversation. It was during the pandemic, sort of as the pandemic was ending. And we just talked through it all.”

“Oh, I sobbed my eyes out,” London chimed in about the reconciliation process.

"I let it all hang out," she added later. "I told Clinton everything that made me sad, everything that hurt me, every way I thought I hurt him. All the petty grudges, all the stupid crap.”

London, 55, and Kelly, 55, co-hosted Seasons 2 through 10 of TLC’s “What Not to Wear." (London co-hosted the first season with a different celebrity stylist, Wayne Scot Lukas, before he was replaced by Kelly.)

By all outward appearances, the two were a reality TV dream team. With their witty banter and brutally honest yet caring fashion advice, they were on a mission to help women (and some guys, too) value themselves and their own beauty.

Their bickering on screen seemed light-hearted, but hints of possible deeper tensions behind the scenes surfaced in 2017, when Kelly revealed London had blocked him on Twitter. 

Earlier that year, Kelly had also been blunt about his conflicted feelings toward London, writing in a collection of essays that he “either adored her or despised her, and never anything in between.”

Now, London and Kelly say they “forgave each other” and are starting a new chapter. 

“I think part of that is, you know, what I said about evolution. When you grow up a little bit — and we did grow up together on television — there was a lot of points of pride that I don’t think either of us were willing to cop to,” London said.

The pair also made a big announcement: A decade since they last worked together, they are collaborating once more.

“Now, we’ve decided, we have this great chemistry, we make each other laugh, we finish each other’s sentences, why aren’t we sharing this with the world? So we’re going on tour,” Kelly said.

The Stacy & Clinton Show was a multicity live tour, which kicked off in Birmingham, Alabama, on Oct. 5 and wrapped up in Cedar Creek, Texas, on Nov. 18.

“We’re going to stand up and we’re going to talk about the behind-the-scenes stories of ‘What Not to Wear,’” Kelly explained at the time. 

“Lots of goss!” London interjected.

“The big feud, we’ll go through that,” Kelly continued. “We’ll do lots of audience participation, like if people want style advice, our updated style advice.”

As their tour website playfully noted, “If you feel like coming dressed as a WNTW mannequin from back in the day (structured jacket, printed blouse, dark-wash-mid-rise-straight-leg jean, pointy-toe shoe and statement necklace), we would not hate it.”

Looking back on their relationship during their TODAY interview, the former co-hosts reflected on the importance of forgiveness.

“If you don’t forgive, you’re only hurting yourself,” Kelly said. “It’s the only way to be in the moment. If you’re always holding onto a grudge, you’re not living in the present.”

“One thing I’ll say about forgiveness is if you don’t let go of it, the famous line is, it’s like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die,” London added. “So do not hold onto grudges. Don’t do it. Find a way through.”

For anyone who needs a refresher about Kelly and London’s falling out, here’s what to know about their previous feud.

Kelly said he both ‘loved’ and ‘loathed’ London in his 2017 book

Kelly wrote candidly about his relationship with London in his 2017 collection of essays, “I Hate Everyone, Except You,” and he did not hold back about his mixed feelings toward his former co-host.

“For the first five years we worked together, I either adored her or despised her, and never anything in between, probably because we spent nearly sixty hours a week in captivity, rarely more than an arm’s length away from each other,” he wrote.

“Trust me when I tell you that is just too much time so spend with any other human being you didn’t choose of your own free will.”

He added that he and London sometimes joked that they were “like a brother and sister trapped in the backseat during an excruciatingly long car trip.”

Kelly also said he loved London because she was “charming as hell” and that he had met “few people so good as she at making others feel decidedly special.”

The style expert also didn't shy away from some of his harsher feelings toward his former co-host. He said he sometimes “loathed” London because of what he saw as her constant “jockeying” for attention.

“There’s a part of me that will love Stacy forever, and a part of me that would be just fine if I never saw her again for the rest of my life,” he wrote.

“We had great chemistry, for sure," he continued. "But just like when you combine baking soda and vinegar, after the fun part fizzles out, you’re left with a puddle of nothing in particular.”

London blocked Kelly on Twitter in 2017

Kelly’s book came out in January 2017, and in November of that year, Kelly said London had blocked him on Twitter, the social platform now known as X.

“Alllll righty then,” Kelly wrote, sharing a screenshot of the notification that London had blocked him. 

His original post has since been deleted, but it was widely circulated at the time.

He later reflected on the incident on “The Chew,” which he co-hosted and moderated from 2011 to 2018.

“It seems juicy, but it really isn’t that juicy,” he said on "The Chew," as per People , referring to finding out London had blocked him. “It was like getting a little slap in the face — I was like, What is that all about? Why, and how, and when?”

“The tea is, there ain’t no tea,” he added. “I literally don’t know if she blocked me yesterday, or a year ago, a month ago … But I’ve got no beef with Stacy at all.”

Kelly reflected on his ongoing rift with London in 2019

“I have no idea what happened. I have a guess as to what happened, but I don’t know for sure,” Kelly said in a 2019 interview with People Now . 

He added that he had not meant to hurt London with his comments about her in his 2017 book.

“In the chapter, I was very honest about my relationship with Stacy,” he said. “I didn’t say anything nasty about Stacy, I said that there were times that we didn’t get along. I didn’t go into specifics.”

He also said some publications “pulled out quotes from the book that made it seem like I was talking smack about her, which I was not.”

Kelly added that London had not yet unblocked him on Twitter. 

“And guess what?” he said. “I really don’t care.”

He also addressed whether he would ever consider doing a reboot of “What Not to Wear.”

“Would I consider it? I would, but I’m not sure that 'What Not to Wear' could even be done today," he said. "The world just a different place. People dress differently now than they did 10 years ago … There are no rules. You should be wearing what makes you feel good about yourself.”

London teased their TODAY reunion on Instagram

In recent years, London and Kelly have stayed fairly quiet about their previous falling out. But on Sept. 27, 2023, an Instagram video from London sparked some fans’ hopes for a reconciliation.

In the video, London teased her upcoming TODAY appearance and hinted she might be joined by someone special.

“Tomorrow, big news, I am going to be on Hoda and Jenna,” she said. “I adore them like you do, but I’ve never been on their show before. And it’s been so long, gosh, since I’ve been in that building.”

“I wonder who I’m going to run into?” she added cryptically.

Fans went into a tizzy when Kelly himself commented on her post with an equally cryptic “thinking face” emoji.

They celebrated their reunion with a hilarious promo video for their live tour

Shortly after announcing their upcoming live tour on TODAY, they both posted an Instagram video that poked fun at their feud and reconciliation.

In the video, they both walk down the street, Kelly eating peanut butter from the jar and London munching on a bar of chocolate. 

They bump into each other, and at first they seem furious by the abrupt collide.

But after a few moments, they drop their snacks and begin passionately kissing on the sidewalk, as romantic string music plays.

“We’re back,” a message reads at the end of the video.

Fans quickly rejoiced over their reconciliation.

"As a Gen X, THIS IS the reunion I’ve been waiting... NSYNC what?" one person commented on London's post.

"Now we can rebuild," another person wrote.

And Carmindy, the "What Not to Wear" makeup artist who helped every guest on the show find their natural glow, also celebrated their renewed friendship.

"My 2 fav people have reunited for a tour," she wrote in her Instagram story.

In a later post about their upcoming stage tour, Kelly clarified the timeline of his and London's reconciliation.

"We actually became friends again 2-1/2 years ago," he wrote in his October 2023 Instagram post . "After many laughs and drinks, we decided to create a talk show and take it on the road. In it, we chat about our time on WNTW, impart our 'evolved' philosophies re style and play games with the audience!

In August 2024, Kelly and London announced a new reality show

In August 2024, Kelly and London announced they would co-host a new Prime Video reality series, “Wear Whatever the F You Want.”

“The world has changed a lot since the run of 'What Not to Wear', and, thankfully, so have we. These days, we have zero interest in telling people what to do, based on society’s norms — because there are no more norms!” Kelly and London said in a press release. 

“However, style is still an important form of communication, and we’re excited to show new clients how to align their personal messaging with their life goals,” they continued in their statement. “It’s time to celebrate individual style, not prescribe it.” 

London and Kelly both celebrated the news of their upcoming series on Instagram.

“Casual news on a Monday,” London wrote . “Mr Kelly and I can’t seem to stay away from each other.”

Kelly also wrote on Instagram that their upcoming show is “kinda like WNTW except NOT. It’s called Wear Whatever The F You Want and we’re gonna help people do exactly that!” 

He also revealed he had been wanting to tell fans about the new series “for YEARS now,” which suggests this show was already secretly in the works when he and London revealed their reconciliation last fall.

“Would we ever do a TV show together again? If the right show comes along, absolutely,” Kelly wrote cryptically on Instagram a few days after he and London announced their touring stage show on TODAY in September. 

London and Kelly will serve as executive producers on “Wear Whatever the F You Want.” A release date for the new series has not yet been announced.
