By Alex Schultz · Last updated on November 3, 2023

Whether it’s beautiful beaches, towering mountains, or endless rice terraces that you’re after, Northern Luzon’s diverse landscapes are a delight to explore. Wherever you go, the scenery is absolutely stunning.

Nestled away among its many landscapes are beautiful mountain villages and beachside towns, while the colonial center of Vigan has lots of fascinating historical and cultural sights on show.

Map of Northern Luzon, the Philippines

Northern Luzon, Philippines Map

Due to its astounding array of scenic spots, the northern part of the Philippine’s largest island is a nature lover’s dream, with lots of great hiking, swimming, and mountain climbing to be had. In addition, visitors can rapel down cliff faces, delve deep into caves, and take scenic boat trips to any one of the stunning islands that line its coast.

Boasting a rich cultural heritage, the region is one of the most diverse in the Philippines and is a great place to head to if you want to learn more about the country’s wealth of local traditions, cultures, and communities.

11. Kabayan [SEE MAP]

Kabayan

Located in a gorgeous setting with rice terraces and mountains all around it, the laidback town of Kabayan is a peaceful place to visit that is primarily known for one thing – its famous mummies. Hidden away in natural caves dotted about the mountain slopes, the Fire Mummies date to between 1200 and 1500 AD, and seeing them up close is both an awe-inspiring and eerie experience.

Besides its many mummies, Kabayan has lots of great hikes for you to do, and the scenery is stunning wherever you go. Besides this, it’s also a great place to head to if you want to gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the rich traditions and culture of the indigenous Ibaloi people who inhabit the area.

10. Bontoc [SEE MAP]

Bontoc

Nestled among the mountains, the bustling market town of Bontoc is full of life and is a pleasant place to spend a day or two before you continue to Mainit, Maligcong, or Kalinga. As it is mainly quite agricultural and rural, there is not all that much to see and do in town other than enjoying the atmosphere and learn a bit about the local Bontoc people’s rich heritage and culture.

The best time of year to visit is in April when the Lang-Ay Festival takes place, and everyone dresses up in traditional clothes. Other than this, the two main attractions of note are the impressive Stone Agricultural Calendar of Bontoc and the magnificent Petroglyphs of Alab, which can be found carved into the mountain wall.

9. Bolinao [SEE MAP]

Bolinao

Blessed with beautiful beaches, sparkling waterfalls, rugged rock formations, and cavernous cave complexes, Bolinao is a treat to visit, and its remote location means you’re unlikely to see any other tourists around. While its many natural wonders are a delight to explore, Bolinao also has some interesting historical sights on show, such as the impressive looking St. James Church and distinctive white lighthouse.

The highlight, however, is Patar White Beach, which is perfect for kicking back and relaxing on. Every evening, a glorious sunset paints the sea a majestic set of oranges, yellows, and reds. An idyllic place to spend a relaxed holiday, Bolinao is well worth the effort of getting there.

8. San Juan [SEE MAP]

San Juan

With some of the best breaks in the country, San Juan (La Union) is a surfer’s dream, with beginners and experts alike heading to the laidback town to try out its epic waves and swells. Much of life in town revolves around surfing. While wandering around, you’ll come across lots of surf shops, while a number of chilled out beachside bars and surf schools line the shore.

Although the town’s beach is pleasant enough to hang out on, there really isn’t all that much to do in San Juan if you’re not into surfing; it is not without reason that it’s known as the Surfing Capital of the Northern Philippines.

7. Mount Pulag National Park [SEE MAP]

Mount Pulag National Park

The highest peak in the whole of Luzon, Mount Pulag towers imperiously over its surroundings. It’s easy to see why various indigenous people consider it to be sacred. Lying at the heart of the national park of the same name, Mount Pulag is the third-highest mountain in the Philippines and attracts lots of mountain climbers and hikers. With many arresting landscapes to enjoy and plenty of fauna and flora scattered about its various habitats, the national park is a delight to explore. Camping overnight is particularly rewarding, as seeing both the sun set and rise over the stunning scenery is simply magical.

6. Sagada [SEE MAP]

Sagada

Known for its famous hanging coffins that are attached to cliff faces for all to see, the small town of Sagada is a very chilled out place, with lots for you to see and do besides its macabre yet strangely mesmerizing monuments.

Set in a beautiful location amongst the mountains, Sagada is an outdoor adventurer’s dream. If you are feeling intrepid, you can go whitewater rafting down rapids, rappeling down cliffs, and exploring caves. For those more into less adrenaline-focused activities, hiking here is incredible. Make your way through breathtaking scenery past gorgeous waterfalls and incredible viewpoints. With a mixture of outdoor delights on offer, any visit to the town can be as relaxing or adrenaline-filled as you make it.

5. Pagudpud [SEE MAP]

Pagudpud

As picture-perfect as they come, Pagudpud boasts breathtakingly beautiful beaches lined with gorgeous, gently swaying palm trees and glittering turquoise waters. Due to its remote location in Ilocos Norte, there is a very untouched and unspoiled feel to the province, and its dazzling white beaches are ideal for lounging on.

If you ever manage to drag yourself away from the stunning scenery of Saud Beach, the surrounding area has a wealth of caves, coves, cliffs, and waterfalls for you to explore. Perfect for people looking for a quiet getaway, Pagudpud attracts relatively few visitors in comparison with other places in Northern Luzon, so you’ll often have the beaches almost to yourself.

4. Hundred Islands National Park [SEE MAP]

Hundred Islands National Park

Lying just off the coast of Alaminos, the wonderfully named Hundred Islands National Park is actually home to 124 islands and islets. One could spend weeks, if not months exploring all the amazing natural sights that the park has to offer.

Rising from the sparkling waters full of incredible marine life, the limestone islands are often coated in forest, with many of them also boasting glorious little sandy beaches. Although it’s a very popular tourist destination, many people only visit for a day. To make the most of the stunning scenery, it is well worth overnighting on an island and spending a few days swimming and snorkeling in the national park’s turquoise waters.

3. Banaue Rice Terraces [SEE MAP]

Banaue Rice Terraces

Located in the most scenic setting imaginable, the small town of Banaue is primarily visited for the majestic views of the rice terrace-covered mountains and valleys surrounding it. Breathtakingly beautiful, the rice terraces are a miracle of engineering, which is why many Filipinos refer to them as ‘the eighth wonder of the world.’ Seeing nature tamed and organized so delicately and picturesquely by humans is quite the experience.

Besides hiking among these picture-perfect paddies, visitors can learn more about the rich culture and heritage of the Ifugao people, whose ancestors created the magnificent landscapes lying before you many millennia ago.

2. Vigan [SEE MAP]

Vigan

Vigan is home to many wonderfully-preserved colonial-era buildings and cobbled streets. Wandering around this place is like stepping back in time, as old, horse-drawn carriages whizz past elegant plazas, magnificent mansions, and charming churches.

One of the oldest towns in the country, Vigan is an intriguing mix of old and new, with both Spanish and Filipino influences to discover wherever you go. With several important historical and cultural landmarks scattered around town, Vigan is a great place to spend a couple of days sightseeing; St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, the magnificent Mestizo District, and Plaza Salcedo are some of its main attractions.

In addition to this, there are also lots of great restaurants and bars where you can try some delicious local fare. If you’re looking for a little something special to take home with you, all the souvenir shops sell beautiful, locally-made arts and crafts.

1. Batad Rice Terraces [SEE MAP]

#1 of Northern Luzon Philippines

When visiting Northern Luzon, no trip can ever be complete without seeing some of the fantastic rice terraces adorning its territory. Batad is widely considered to be the best place to see them. Set in a lovely location, Batad’s small collection of wooden houses are ringed by endless rice terraces. These blankets coat the sweeping valleys and towering mountains surrounding the village, and the majestic landscape really is an incredible sight to behold.

As it is a very rural little spot, the quaint village is ideal for people looking for a quiet getaway. If you’d like to stretch your legs while searching for the perfect viewpoint, there are lots of peaceful hikes that you can do in the surrounding hills and valleys.

One thing’s for sure; wherever you go, you’ll see an endless sea of green before you, and mountain slopes covered in rice terraces stretching away towards the horizon.

Kennon Road Viewpoint in Baguio, Philippines

Baguio is a landlocked city in the heart of the province of Benguet. Popularly known as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” Baguio City serves as the gateway to the Cordillera region.

Because of its elevation of 1,500 meters above sea level and its pine-clad topography, Baguio City enjoys relatively cooler temperates compared to the metro and nearby provinces. Baguio escapades are popular for both locals and international travelers who want to escape the city heat.

2. banaue     .

Banaue Rice Terraces in the Philippines

Banaue (also spelled Banawe) is mainly visited for its stunning rice terraces. The 2000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces were created by the Ifugao people in a massive engineering project to cover the sides of the valleys.

The Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the most famous tourist spots in Banaue . This amazing landscape designated as a National Cultural Treasure has also made its mark in popular culture.

In the ending scene of the 2018 blockbuster film Avengers: Infinity War, the film’s main villain, Thanos, is seen walking out of a small hut to watch the sunset on a vista of mountains and rice paddies, which the film production confirms shows the Banaue Rice Terraces.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the Banaue Rice Terraces that are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the presence of numerous modern structures.

This distinction was earned by the Batad Rice Terraces and Bangaan Rice Terraces, which can also be found in the province of Ifugao. However, Banaue Rice Terraces is an essential tourist spot in the province.

3. batad     .

Batad is a quaint village of fewer than 1500 people and is situated among the Ifugao rice terraces. It is perhaps the best place to view this UNESCO World Heritage Site . The landscape is truly stunning, and the nearby waterfall offers a lush swimming point.

There are no roads leading to Batad and no motorized vehicles in the village. Get ready for a lot of trekking and hiking because all visitors must get around on foot to visit this remote mountain village. Walking is mostly possible only on the walls of the rice terraces, which are wide enough for one person to pass at a time.

Nowadays, visitors can find a number of hostels and guest houses in the small village catering to travelers, most of which overlook the scenic rice terraces. For those who have limited time, it’s possible to visit Batad as a day trip from Banaue.

Once part of a larger province called Kalinga-Apayao, the two split in 1995 for local government to better service the respective needs of the various indigenous peoples in the area.

Up North: A 7-day adventure in Northern Philippines

The Philippines is home to over 7,000 islands with pristine white beaches, stunning sand bars, enchanting lagoons, and diverse coral reefs. If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, you probably have considered spending your precious holidays at one of its beautiful islands. However, not a lot of foreign travelers know that the Philippines also boast some of the best mountain ranges in Southeast Asia. While you can’t possibly explore all the destinations in just 7 days, our suggested itinerary will give you a real taste of Northern Philippines and you will be introduced to its best attractions. You can absolutely make any changes you like, to adapt the tour to your preferences. Enjoy!

Things to know before traveling to Northern Philippines:

Language – The national language was labeled Filipino to acknowledge and embrace the existence of many English and Spanish-derived words. In the North, the locals speak regional languages, which include Tagalog , Ilocano , Pangasinense and Kapampangan . English is emerging, especially in some popular destinations like Sagada and Ilocos, so you can get by without learning the language. However, speaking at least some Cordilleran /Filipino or attempting to learn is greatly appreciated by locals.

Currency exchange – The official currency of the Philippines is the Peso ( ₱ ). Exchanging money in the Philippines is easy and follows the same standard to elsewhere in Asia. Before your trip to North Luzon, make sure to bring enough cash because there are not many ATMs in the region. Ask your hotel if they accept credit/debit cards and how much is the transaction fee.

Philippine peso currency bills

Social norms and etiquette – Filipinos are extremely tolerant people, and are generally happy, generous and gregarious. Being a Spanish Colony for over three hundred years and being under the United States for 50 years, foreign values have been adapted by Filipinos in their own peculiar fashion. For a foreign traveler, it is important to know that Filipinos, like most Asians, stress public harmony and overt conviviality. Any indication of conflict is readily buried and confrontation is frowned upon.

Accommodation – North Luzon has a wide range of accommodation options, with something for every level of comfort and budget. Budget hotels, bed and breakfasts, youth hostels and guesthouses, luxurious beach front resorts and villas are aplenty in the region. In Banaue, choose a guesthouse in downtown near the market and tourism office to get spectacular views of the rice terraces and mountains. In Bontoc, most accommodation options are located along the town proper’s main road. In Sagada, there are no luxury hotels but there are plenty of budget hostels, inns, guesthouses, lodgings, and homestays.

Getting around – Getting around North Luzon and taking public transportation might be a shocking experience to foreign visitors. Transportation options include local buses, jeepneys, habal-habal ( motorcycle taxi ) and tricycle. If you want the most flexibility, rent a motorbike for about 350 pesos per day and explore by yourself. Renting a car and driving on your own is another great option, which will give you complete control of the trip.

Habal-habal, a very Unique Transport

Detailed itinerary: Up North: A 7-day Adventure in Northern Philippines

Day 0: Manila to Banaue

Your adventure in Northern Philippines starts today! Please note, there is no airport with commercial service in Banaue nor any nearby city and province. However, there are plenty of direct and in direct buses that go to Banaue from Manila. There are nightly bus services offered by three companies ( Ohayami, Florida and Coda Lines ) that go directly to Banaue. If you prefer day buses, you can take the Florida Bus from either Sampaloc and Cubao terminals to Nueva Vizcaya. At Bagabag Junction ( Nueva Vizcaya province ), there are plenty of jeepneys going to Banaue.

Assuming you arrive in Banaue at around 7 in the morning, you will probably be able to check into your preferred accommodation at around 12 in the afternoon. Allow yourself to rest then arrange your tour for tomorrow.

Where to stay in Banaue:

Banaue Hotel and Youth Hostel

Bogah Home Stay

Native Village Inn & Restaurant

Banaue Homestay

Day 1: Banaue

On the morning of Day 1, get set to experience the glories of Banaue, known for Banaue Rice Terraces ( Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe ). Its 2,000-year-old terraces that were carved into the mountains were probably its most famous tourist attractions. Aside from exploring the rice terraces, there are plenty of other things you can do in Banaue. You can visit the Tam-an Village , a local village located on the outskirts of Banaue. Here, you can get an insight of the Ifugao culture through survival skills performance, traditional song and dance, and weaving practices. If you have enough luck credits, you might even witness an actual wedding ceremony in the village!

Banaue Rice Terraces, Northern Philippines

Day 2: Banaue – Batad

For one of the most memorable sunrises you’ll ever see, take a walk at the viewing deck in the early morning. For breakfast, try 7th Heaven’s Cafe and enjoy their best tasting coffee as you enjoy the views of rice terraces. Then, make your way to Batad , one of the five UNESCO World Heritage site listed rice terraces in the Philippines. It is said that Batad is the best among the five clusters of Ifugao Rice Terraces. To get to Batad from Banaue, take a jeepney or charter a tricycle to the Batad saddle point. From there, you can hire a local guide to take you to Batad Rice Terraces . If you still have time before you travel back to Banaue, then you can ask your guide to take you to Tappiya Falls . Do not miss to try some local specialty like Pinikpikan and buy some handmade souvenirs.

Tappiya Falls, Philippines

Day 3: Bontoc

On day 3, embark on one of the most exciting trips in the Cordillera by heading to Bontoc . From Banaue town proper, take a van or bus to Bontoc. For adventure enthusiasts, toploading on a jeepney from Banaue to Bontoc is an excellent way to learn about local culture. Top loading is one of the ways in riding a jeepney in the Philippines. Instead of getting inside (or if the jeepney is already full), passengers go up to the roof of the vehicle and sit on a long wood with cushion. This is commonly seen in the provinces where local transportation is limited.

Jeepney, Bontoc, Philippines

Depending on your time of arrival, you can either take it easy and soak up the atmosphere in Bontoc or you can begin your tour of its famous attractions. Check into your preferred accommodation. Some attractions you can visit are Bontoc Museum , Maligcong Rice Terraces , Chico River and Bayyo Rice Terraces .

Where to stay in Bontoc:

Suzette’s Maligcong Homestay

Vilma’s Guest House

Pines Kitchenette and Inn

Day 4: Bontoc to Sagada

On day 4, enjoy an exciting jeepney journey through one of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever see from on your way to Sagada, a remote mountain town in the Cordillera Mountains. A 5th class municipality of the Mountain Province, Sagada is known for its unique traditions, cool weather, natural attractions and friendly people.

Once you arrive in the town proper, go to Sagada Tourism Office and pay the environmental fee of 35 pesos (0.70 USD) . Remember to keep the receipts as you cannot enter the Sumaguing Cave without this. After check in, take it easy and soak up the atmosphere in Sagada by visiting Saint Mary’s Church , Echo Valley and the Hanging Coffins .

Where to stay in Sagada:

Misty Lodge and Cafe

Isabelo’s Inn and Cafe

Coffee Heritage House & Hostel

Sagada Heritage Village

Inandako’s BnB

The Hanging Coffins of Sagada

Day 5 to 6: Sagada

On days 5 and 6, experience some of the best attractions in Sagada. You cannot say you’ve been to Sagada if you did not conquer Sagada Cave Connection , a 5-hour spelunking in Lumiang and Sumaguing Cave . These two caves feature awe-inspiring cave systems, which are both fascinating and scary. The cave connection requires a local guide, which you can hire at the tourism office. Before you sign up for this, make sure to assess yourself because this activity is physically demanding. Make sure to wear sturdy pair of sandals. Bring a head lamp, waterproof bag for your gadgets, some snacks and water.

Lumiang Burial Cave, Sagada, Philippines

Day 7: Sagada to Manila via Baguio

Savor your last morning in paradise with a relaxed breakfast in your room or at a nearby restaurant. You can also spend a few hours in town before you prepare for your departure to Baguio, where your Northern Philippines adventure ends. To get to Baguio, take a GL-Lizardo Trans Bus in Sagada town proper. There are about seven trips per day and the last trip is at 1 in the afternoon. Travel time to Baguio is 5 hours and one way bus fare is 220 pesos. In Baguio, take a cab to Victory Liner Bus Terminal and board a bus bound for Cubao or Pasay ( Manila ).

This is the end of our 1-week suggested itinerary to explore Northern Philippines. The sequence of activities and attractions above are just a guide and you can definitely change it to suit your interests. You may opt to continue traveling independently, or extend your stay in North Luzon. The decision is all yours!

North Luzon Loop Road Trip Travel Guide 2023

It was a pouring morning of Christmas day, 25th of December, 2019 when the thought came to us. While everyone in the world was busy exchanging holiday greetings and gifts, a friend of mine who also travels a lot and I were thinking of going somewhere for a week or less during the holiday break.

My mom and I initially thought of going to Isabela province, my father’s hometown; and we thought of just taking my friend with us if he wanted to. He thought it was a good idea until we came up with a better one – a North Luzon loop road trip .

Once decided with the itinerary for the North Luzon loop, we packed our stuff good for a week, pulled out some containers, filled it in with some Noche Buena goods from our table and off we went on a spontaneous road trip and adventure to Northern Philippines.

The Northern Luzon

a bus in a country side with few people on top plad

The northern part of one of the Philippine archipelago’s biggest island is among the most favorite destinations of the road trippers in the country. You can actually travel from a province to another by land. The best thing about it is that you can also witness with your own senses how truly diverse the Philippine culture is not to mention how geographically blessed the whole island is.

green mountain ranges

Every region or province has something special and unique on the table – from their delicacies, to their costumes, language, traditions, points of interest and more. Albeit the advancement and progress in most parts of the country, some groups of indigenous people in the northern Luzon still practice their traditions religiously and protect it all cost. Meeting them is among the most fascinating things you can do in a trip to their region.

Language Spoken

The language or dialect spoken varies from province to province or region. Ilocano is spoken at large in North Luzon but you’ll also encounter people speaking in  Ybanag especially in the province of Isabela; and various tribal languages in the Cordilleras. Despite the variety of local languages spoken in the north, everyone could converse fluently in Tagalog and some even in English.

The North Luzon Loop

Three people, one car; drove through and stopped at seven provinces in North Luzon in almost six days. It was indeed an epic trip!

North Luzon map

We left Tagaytay City at 10:00 PM. Initially, we planned of going to Ilocos Norte then Ilocos Sur after Cagayan but since there was a typhoon a week ago, the roads connecting Cagayan and Ilocos collapsed making it impassable. We thought of a reroute instead and decided to visit Sagada.

Places to Visit in the North Luzon

We actually stopped or passed by six to seven provinces for this North Luzon loop road trip starting from Quirino, Isabela, Cagayan, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ilocos Sur then La Union. Below are the places we visited in each province:

First Stop: Quirino Province

A lady standing in the middle of flower garden in green rolling hills

At around 10:00 in the morning, We arrived at Cabarroguis, Quirino Province. First, we went to the library where the Quirino sign is at and took touristy shots (lol). Then, we had our early lunch and rested. After a nap, we hit the road again and visited  Landingan Viewpoint   before the sun set.   The drive to and from Nagtipunan is indeed a feast for the eyes. The endless rolling hills seemed dreamy during the golden hour. Dusk started to fall when we left Landingan Viewpoint.

Paskuhan sa Quirino

We went back to Quirino Capitol in the evening as there was an on-going event in there. Every year, during Christmas, each municipality of the province sets up an exhibit that tells its history and showcases their culture and tradition as part of their Paskuhan program. There are  also contests held each night and everyone is invited to watch and join.

A silhouette of a lady in front of a lit building

That’s when we learned that Quirino was previously a municipality of Nueva Vizcaya and the indigenous people, Igorots, predominantly resided in the area. Below are some photos of the exhibits during Paskuhan sa Quirino 2019.

After enjoying the night and the lights at the Capitol, we had dinner, called it a day and rested for another adventure the next day.

Second Stop: Isabela Province

a park with the words "Bonifacio Park" written across its arc

At around 4:30 AM, we left Quirino for Isabela Province. Our trip in Isabela is but a historical and religious one. We visited different churches and historical places in Ilagan, Tumauini and Cabagan. Of course, we didn’t miss the famous Pancit Cabagan!

an old church made of bricks with a cylindrical bell tower on the side

Since it was also the holiday season, a small local carnival and long bazaar were up near Cabagan Square Park. We visited it and enjoyed some street food.

Third Stop: Cagayan

a wooden canoe floating in a river

We intially planned to visit the nearby islands and beaches in Cagayan but since a recent typhoon made the waves rough and kind of devastated and made some roads impassable, we decided to visit  Callao Cave  and Calvary Hills instead.

If we didn’t miss Isabela’s Pancit Cabagan, of course, we didn’t dare to miss Cagayan’s Pancit Batil Patong. After getting stuffed with some local stir-fried noodles, we headed to our next stop: Kalinga.

Fourth Stop: Kalinga

a lady standing at the edge with a view of mountain ranges in the booackground

We were all tired and weary from our day trip in Cagayan that driving straight to Sagada would be a little impossible that night. With that, we decided to stop at Kalinga and spend a night for a good slumber in there.

We checked in to a cheap AirBnB accommodation, at Ragsac Camping Grounds, since it is also along the road that we’d take going to Sagada. We didn’t expect much from it. What we didn’t know is that it offers far more than just a camping ground.

a lady seated at the edge looking at the mountain ranges in front of her

It is located near Chico River – a river that encompasses two region: The Cordilleras and Cagayan Valley. It is also a place where the sunrise is breath taking.   After admiring the glorious sunrise, we had brewed coffee and some pan de sal. Then, we packed up and headed to our next destination – Sagada.

Fifth Stop: Sagada, Mountain Province

The drive from Kalinga to Sagada is among my most favorite! If the drive in Quirino Province promised endless rolling hills, this one took our breaths away effortlessly with the countless waterfalls and steep verdant mountain ridges that kept us up and anticipating for more!

We started seeing tall pine trees on one side, and cliff with mountain ranges below on the other. My nose and ears felt cold with excitement as it is my first time to set foot in Sagada. When we got into the town proper, it is noticeable that a lot of tourists walk from a point to another and few vehicles can be seen on the road.

There’s so much to love about Sagada – the hospitality of the locals, their preservation of their tradition and culture, the weather, the food, the place itself and the stray dogs. the stray dogs were friendly and they seem healthy!

Things to remember when visiting Sagada

Take note that Sagada Tourism Office requires the visitors to hire a local tour guide shall they decide to visit the different tourist spots in it. However, there are points that the tourists can visit without a guide such as the Sagada Pottery, Sagada Weaving and St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church.

We paid an amount of Php 50.00 for the tourist registration fee then proceeded to Sagada Pottery. We watched how the pots and ceramics were done out of clay. They would also let the tourists experience it. Further, interested collectors can buy from  their small store where their finished products are also on display.

First day in Sagada

After Sagada Pottery, we visited Sagada Weaving House. However, it was a holiday and the weavers were on a break according to its owner. Instead, we checked on their products as they also have a souvenir shop.

a two-story house with blue roof and white windows

Since it was just in time for us to check in, we headed to the open field of St. Mary the Virgin complex and paid an amount of Php 50.00 as per instructed by the host of our AirBnB. We walked our way to Inandako’s BnB, settled then rested for a bit.

The Lemon Pie House was just a few meters away from where we were staying so we visited it and had our snack. Before we left, our host told us that it was the first day of the annual Bonfire Festival in Langtiw. Right after stuffing our selves with a slice of lemon pie, we took a multi-cab and went there.

If there’s one thing I’d dare not to miss in Sagada, it is seeing the  Hanging Coffins  with my own eyes and knowing more about it and their death and burial rituals. On our second day in Sagada, we decided to visit it in the morning.

Few steps from the jump off point to the Hanging Coffins is the St Mary the Virgin Anglican Church. We paid it a visit before finally leaving Sagada.

Drive Through: Cervantes, Ilocos Sur

a lady standing in the middle of a sharp curve in a highway

From Sagada, we drove southwest going to La Union passing by Benguet and Ilocos Sur. We stopped at Bessang Pass National Park as the view is truly enchanting. The low-lying clouds and the fog slowly enveloped the mountainside and the long and winding road. When the wind blows, the fog fades and reveal multi-tiered waterfalls at the mountain ranges across.

Sixth Stop: La Union

We were supposed to go surfing in La Union but due to the heavy traffic we were caught in at Bacnotan, we were not able to do it. Instead, we watched the sunset and had dinner by the beach in the province.

After dinner, we left San Juan and headed back home.

Tips and Things to Remember for the North Luzon Loop

1. As much as possible, get your tanks full especially before going to and leaving Kalinga and Sagada. There are only few gasoline stations along the way. If there’s any, it’s pretty expensive compared to that of other cities’. 2. Bring gallons of drinking water and snacks. 3. Check the weather before and from time to time during the road trip. Check if the roads that you are to take are passable. 4. Always be aware of the people’s culture of the place you are going to visit. 5. Bring enough cash for this North Luzon loop road trip. Not all cities that you’ll pass by accept credit cards. There are limited banks and ATM’s as well  in some cities. 6. Save a very good music playlist. This will make you up and pumped all throughout the trip. 7. Bring and always get your power banks fully charged. 8. Mobile data is necessary but take note that some parts you’ll drive through have sporadic to no mobile reception of network signal especially from Kalinga to Sagada and Sagada to La Union via Cervantes, Ilocos Sur and Benguet.

North Luzon Loop as an Overview

This North Luzon Loop Road Trip is but an overview of how amazing north Luzon is. After this, I highly suggest or rather encourage you to go back to these provinces and stay for two to three days for you to be able to fully understand and appreciate what each of it has to offer.

Hi, We are thinking of doing a similar roadtrip in November. We are starting and ending the loop in Manilla, so we are looking to rent a car for a week on a quite small budget. Do you have any recommendation for finding a car on a small budget ?

Kamusta naman ang signal sa northloop anong network ang pinakamagandang gamitin?

Mahirap hirap eh, lalo na in between town centers. So, advisable talaga to download offline maps is ever 🙂 Globe ako no’n pretty decent naman pero ayun, mas madalas walang signal talaga on the road.

North of Manila , Northern Luzon harbours some of the archipelago’s least-visited wildernesses, and offers thrilling outdoor adventures including whitewater rafting, trekking, surfing, spelunking and mountain biking. As well as its wonderful mountainous areas and volcanic landscapes, the region is home to some of the country’s best surf breaks, along with wild stretches of coast peppered with virgin beaches and emerald-green waters. It is also rich in culture, with a handful of beautifully preserved Spanish colonial towns lining the west coast. Further east of the central Cordilleras is the Northern Sierra Madre National Park, the largest protected area in the country, offering exceptional trekking opportunities.

More than 100km off the northern coast of Luzon, and closer to Taiwan than the Philippines mainland, lie the remote, scattered islands of Batanes province with their unforgettable hills and wild rugged cliffs.

Along the west coast north of Subic, the Zambales coast is dotted with laidback resorts, while the Lingayen Gulf is the location of the Hundred Islands National Park – a favourite weekend trip from Manila.

the province of La Union draws visitors for its surfing. North of here is Ilocos Sur, known primarily for the old colonial city of Vigan, where horsedrawn carriages bounce down narrow cobblestone streets.

On the northwestern edge of Luzon are excellent beaches around Pagudpud. Northern Luzon’s east coast offers excellent surfing at Baler, while further north Palanan is the jump-off point for the barely explored Northern Sierra Madre National Park.

Despite the obvious appeal of the coast, for many visitors, the prime attraction in Northern Luzon is the mountainous inland Cordillera region, where highlights include the mountain village of Sagada with its caves and hanging coffins, and the stunning rice terraces around Banaue.

In the village of Kabayan, it’s possible to hike up to a couple of mountaintop caves to see ancient mummies. Kabayan also provides access to Mount Pulag, the highest mountain in Luzon.

There is plenty of things to see and do in Northern Luzon, most notably some amazing rafting, trekking and surfing. It's also a bit of a cultural honey pot with the famous hanging coffins of Sagada and the centuries-old human mummies found in Kabayan.

These are the best things to do in Northern Luzon.

#1 Surf in San Juan

A dramatic crescent with huge waves, the coast just north of San Juan in the barangay of Urbiztondo is a prime surfing beach. Most of its resorts have surfboards to rent and offer tuition for an additional charge.

For experienced surfers, there are two breaks in Urbiztondo, one a beach break in front of the main huddle of resorts and the other the Monaliza point break at the northern end of the beach.

The best spot for beginners is the Cement Factory break in the nearby barangay of Bacnotan. The peak season is September to March; at other times there may be no waves but you can get significant discounts on accommodation.

#2 Go back in time in Vigan

An unmissable part of any North Luzon itinerary, Vigan, is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. Lying on the western bank of the Mestizo River, it was in Spanish times an important political, military, cultural and religious centre.

The old town is characterized by its cobbled streets and some of the finest colonial architecture in the country, mixing Mexican, Chinese and Filipino features. Many of the old buildings are still lived in, others are used as curio shops, and a few have been converted into museums or hotels.

The attractions are within walking distance of one another, with Plaza Burgos the most obvious reference point, and, adding to the old-world atmosphere, some streets are open only to pedestrians – unusual in the Philippines – and romantic horse-drawn kalesas.

#3 Explore Ilocos Norte's huge sand dunes

The coastline west of Laoag is a sight to behold. More like desert than beach, it measures almost 1km across at some points and reaches as far as the eye can see, fringed by huge sand dunes.

The area has become a favourite among Manila film crews; the Suba dunes to the south – close to the Fort Ilocandia resort – are where Oliver Stone shot segments of Born on the Fourth of July.

#4 Trek in the Cordillera

Since the road network is poor in many parts of the Cordillera, and there are so many jungle-clad peaks and hidden valleys, trekking is the only way to see some of the region’s secrets: burial caves, indigenous villages and hidden waterfalls.

Gentle day-hikes are possible, particularly in the main tourist areas of Banaue and Sagada, but there are also plenty of two- or three-day treks that take you deep into backwaters.

Most of the best trails are around Sagada, Banaue, Bontoc, Tabuk and Tinglayan. In each of these towns, you’ll find a tourist office or town hall where someone will be able to help arrange guides.

#5 Discover centuries-old human mummies in Kabayan

Kabayan came to the attention of the outside world in the early twentieth century when a group of mummies, possibly dating back as far as 2000 BC, was discovered in the surrounding caves.

The history of the Kabayan mummies is still largely oral. It is even uncertain when the last mummy was created; according to staff at the town’s museum, mummification was attempted most recently in 1907 but the wrong combination of herbs was used.

It’s possible that the last successful mummification was in 1901, of the great-grandmother of former village mayor Florentino Merino.

Be sure to visit Opdas Cave at the southern end of Kabayan village. It contains around two hundred skulls and bones estimated to be up to a thousand years old, discovered in a pile but now arranged.

Nobody knows why they were buried together, but one theory is that they died as a result of an epidemic.

#6 See the hanging coffins of Sagada

The small town of Sagada, 160km north of Baguio, has long attracted curious visitors. Part of the appeal derives from its famous hanging coffins and a labyrinth of caves used by the ancients as burial sites. But Sagada also has a reputation as a remote and idyllic hideaway where people live a simple life well away from civilization.

The landscape here is almost alpine and the inhabitants are mountain people, their faces shaped not by the sun and sea of the lowlands, but by the thin air and sharp glare of altitude.

Sagada only began to open up as a destination when it got electricity in the early 1970s, and intellectuals – internal refugees from the Marcos dictatorship – flocked here to write and paint. They didn’t produce much of note - it's said that this is perhaps because they spent much of their time drinking tapuy (the local rice wine).

European hippies followed, as did the military, who thought the turistas were supplying funds for an insurgency. While the town doesn’t offer a lot to do, you’ll find plenty of activities in the surrounding area.

#7 Explore the rice terraces of Banaue

Most people know the rice fields of Bali , or Chiang Mai in Thailand . But one of the most impressive rice fields, or terraces actually, can be found in the Philippines. Banaue is a municipality located in the province of Ifugao in the Philippines.

It is famous for its stunning rice terraces, which are often referred to as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The terraces were built by the Ifugao people over 2,000 years ago and are still in use today for agriculture. Banaue is also home to several indigenous communities, and you can learn about their rich culture and traditions through various activities such as weaving workshops and cultural performances.

The town itself is small and quaint, but there are several accommodations available for visitors who want to explore the area.

There is a wide variety of accommodation in Northern Luzon, from little fan-cooled nipa huts on the beaches and shaded open-fronted huts to lovely beach resorts. Here’s where to stay.

The Zambales coast

Along The Zambales coast, travellers tend to head for the resorts of San Antonio-Pundaquit, the surfers’ hangouts of San Narciso, or the beachside Botolan midrange stays.

The Lingayen Gulf

The accommodation options in Lucap are largely uninspiring, so if you’re staying in the area for a few days, consider basing yourself in Bolinao . You can camp overnight on Governor’s Island, Children’s Island and Quezon Island.

Ilocos province

Vigan has some charming accommodation : old colonial hotels, mansions, and boutique stays.

Resorts around Pagudpud are a little pricier than similar establishments elsewhere. It’s always worth asking for a discount. Budget travellers should consider a homestay behind the main resorts on Saud Beach.

The Northeast

All the best accommodation in the northeast is in Baler, or around the beach at Sabang, which is a short tricycle ride from town.

The Cordillera

For the Cordillera stay in Baguio . Hotels in the centre can get quite noisy, so ask for a room away from the road; there are also a number of good choices outside town in peaceful pine forested areas. Artist-run Tam-awan Village also has traditional huts.

Kalinga province

The towns of Tinglayan and Tabuk have some half-decent, if limited accommodation. Away from them, expect simple lodges or local homes

Ifugao Province

Banaue’s accommodation is generally simple but clean and friendly, and many places have restaurants attached. There are also B&Bs in Batad and Banga-an.

Batanes Province

There are no campsites in Batan, but as long as you respect the landscape no one minds if you pitch a tent for the night near a beach. Sabtang and Itbayat islands only really have small homestays.

Browse the best hotels in Northern Luzon .

If you're into fast food, it's time to fill your boot because Northern Luzon is stuffed with quick, takeaway joints. Aside from Baguio, the best meals will be served at resorts. Here's where to eat:

Eating options are limited, although most hotels have their own restaurant. Reserve ahead for eating in the resorts of San Juan.

Vigan doesn’t offer much in terms of restaurants, although make sure to try some local specialities, including the town’s famous crispy empanada.

Resorts around Pagudpud generally have good places to eat, else it's slim pikcings. Tuguegarao City mainly has fast-food restaurants and popular all-you-can-eat Filipino lunch buffets.

Baguio has some of the best restaurants in the country. There is also a good selection of street food, including a couple of places beside Casa Vallejo hotel serving bulalo (beef on the bone in a broth).

Several of the lodges in Basco have restaurants or can make food to order, while elsewhere on the island you’ll be reliant on the occasional small canteen.

Here are the best restaurants in Northern Luzon.

  • Café by the Ruins, Baguio Located in a breezy setting, with tables dotted around the World War II ruins of the residence of Baguio’s first governor, this is one of the city’s best restaurants, with excellent organic food prepared with home-grown herbs and served either indoors or in the shady yard.
  • Chef’s Home, Baguio The Malaysian owner and chef rustles up exceptional Asian fusion dishes embracing Malay, Thai and Indian cuisine. Dishes are large enough to share.
  • Irene’s Empanadahan, Vigan This fourth-generation empanada place has been going strong since the 1930s – locals say it’s the best place in town to savour the Vigan speciality, which comes in several varieties, including pork, beef, chicken, (canned) tuna and, if you’re lucky, crab.
  • Angel and Marie’s Place, San Juan The favourite surfers’ restaurant in San Juan offers serious fish dishes such as tuna steak or squid adobo, with banana chocolate crêpes for afters, and Filipino breakfasts at the weekend.

Bus is the best way to get to Northern Luzon, though there are a number of options.

Victory Liner have services straight up the coast from Manila, stopping at major towns like Iba and Santa Cruz but able to drop you en route on request, and can often stop right by your resort – make sure to tell the driver where you’re going.

For Pundaquit, buses stop at San Antonio, a short tricycle ride away (10min), while to get to the Botolan resorts you’ll have to catch a tricycle or jeepney (5min) from the spot on the main highway where buses drop you off. Regular local buses also connect all the towns along the coast.

A number of jeepneys connect the towns along the coast.

Bangkas connect the Zambales towns with small islands off the coast – Pundaquit to Capones Island, for example (20min). Hotels can often help organize bangka hire.

If you're planning to visit popular destinations such as Baguio, Sagada, and Banaue, you'll need at least 5-7 days in Northern Luzon. However, if you have more time and want to explore more off-the-beaten-path destinations or take time out on the beach, you could easily spend up to two weeks here.

There are plenty of ways to get around Northern Luzon, but buses and vans are the most helpful for travellers. Here's how to get around:

Most major towns and resorts are served by regular buses, though in some regions the roads can close during the wet season. Victory Liner and Five Star serve Manila (roughly every 40min–1hr; 4–8hr) and Santa Cruz (every 30min; 2hr).

Jeepneys connect some of the small resorts and shoot around towns, but they take much longer than the buses and generally only leave when full.

By tricycle

Tricycles are found in most areas and can be helpful for short hops or the last leg of a journey. Agree on a price before setting off and prepare to haggle.

A/C vans serve a number of rural destinations and larger cities. Some even have their own terminals. Again, they will only leave when full.

There are several airports in Northern Luzon. The small Vigan Airport, about 4km southwest of the centre, is served by infrequent flights to Manila and Basco.

Tuguegarao airport, 2km north of Tuguegerao Junction, is easily reached from town by tricycle (15min). It has daily flights to Manila, as well as Basco in the Batanes Islands.

Note that Cagayan North International Airport opened, 77km west of Santa Ana, has no scheduled passenger flights.

The best time to visit Northern Luzon is generally the dry season (November to April) as the weather is cooler and more pleasant.

The wet season (May to October) can bring heavy rains and typhoons, which may affect your travel plans and cut off access to certain destinations.

If you plan to visit the Banaue Rice Terraces, the best time to go is between February and May when the terraces are lush green and the weather is generally good.

The summer months of April to June are also a great time to visit Northern Luzon for beach activities in Pangasinan and La Union.

For cultural experiences, you may want to visit during festivals such as the Panagbenga Festival in Baguio in February or the Kalinga Tattoo Festival in Kalinga in March.

Keep in mind that these festivals may attract large crowds, so book any accommodation ahead of your arrival.

15 Best CAGAYAN Tourist Spots (Northern Philippines)

 alt=

Over a decade ago, I was in my mid-20s and working as a TV segment producer on a show for a major TV network. This stint allowed me to travel to some of the best places, including Cagayan, one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines. The trip was so memorable for me, I’d always wanted to return. I guess I manifested it because in 2019, I joined a familiarization trip organized by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority ( CEZA ). I recall thinking that despite the passing years, Cagayan remained pretty much the same, generally unexplored and as splendid as I had remembered it.

Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as karayan , kayan , kayayan , and kalayan .

Cagayanos are mostly of Ilocano descent who migrated from the Ilocos Region. The second largest community is the Ibanag, while the minor population comprises the Malawis, Itawits, Gaddangs, Aetas, and Ibatans. The primary language in Cagayan is Ilocano, followed by Ibanag, Itawit, and Tagalog.

Dubbed the Land of Smiling Beauty, Cagayan is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Sambali or Piat festival held annually to celebrate the Christianization of the Itawis. Thanks to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it’s also a major ecotourism destination, particularly attracting adventure seekers for its majestic caves, fishing expeditions, and hiking trails.

1. Palaui Island

Palaui is a protected island in Santa Ana, Cagayan , covering an area of 7,145 hectares. In 1994, Palaui was declared a National Marine Reserve and was home to 90 migratory birds, 21 commercial species of fish, and about 50 hectares of corals. It gained worldwide popularity after being used as a filming location for two Survivor seasons; Survivor Blood vs. Water and Survivor Cagayan in 2013.

Palaui Island Cagayan

It was one of the places we visited during the familiariazation tour with CEZA. It took about 30 minutes to get to the island via boat from San Vicente Port.

Palaui is an excellent destination if you want to spend a day with nature. Some activities that you can do on the island are hiking, scuba diving, and enjoying the view of the rolling hills. The best attractions in Palaui are Cape Engaño Lighthouse, Anguib beach, Punta Verde, and Crocodile island.

We took a hike to the Cape Engaño Lighthouse (or Faro de Cabo Engaño). The lighthouse is not open to the public, but we were free to roam in the surrounding areas. And the view from that hill is worth the effort. There’s a 360-view of the sea and nearby islands; it was simply breathtaking.

Palaui Island Cagayan

Next we went to Punta Verde located on the other side of Palaui Island. It has an unsullied beach and numerous homesteads that accommodate tourists. If you want to see some props from the Survivor TV show, you can check out some at Punta Verde, specifically at Nature Village, where they were on display.

2. Anguib Beach

Anguib beach , also known as Boracay of the North, is located in the municipality of Sta. Ana. The beach is often compared with Boracay for its cerulean blue waters and fine white sand. I didn’t know that Cagayan was hiding such a pristine beach that when I saw it, I was completely blown away. The beach remains largely unexploited, so ruggedly gorgeous that it can rival the more popular beaches in the Philippines.

Anguib beach 3

If you want to enjoy a beautiful beach away from the crowd, you should visit Anguib. The waters here are clean and filled with marine life making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, about 24 km from Tuguegarao City. It’s known for the seven-chamber show caves that were first excavated in 1980. It’s part of the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS), a protected area and national park.

Callao Cave

Callao Cave is an important site in Cagayan not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical contribution. In 2007, a team of archaeologists excavated fossils of human sub-species called Callao Man or Homo Luzonensis from the late Pleistocene era from this cave. Today, tourists can visit seven chambers inside the cave, including the Chapel. This cave is perfect for beginners as it’s easy to navigate.

4. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is a tributary of the Cagayan River that passes through the PPLS. The name means left-most in the local vernacular. It’s known for its fantastic views of karst formations and unspoiled waters.

You can go swimming or take a leisurely boat ride on this river. If you’re up for an adventure, you can do water rafting or kayaking, or ask the boatman to take you to Callao Cave where yo can go spelunking or see thousands of bats.

5. Nangaramoan Beach

Nangaramoan beach is located in Sta. Ana and it sits on the same shoreline as the other beaches, Anguib, Puzo, and Mapurao. With white golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounded with lush greenery and rock formations, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite destination by the locals.

Nangaramoan Beach

This is one of the beaches that you can visit in Sta. Ana. You can go on a day trip or stay overnight as there several resorts in the area. The shoreline is rocky, and the sand is coarse and filled with crushed corals, so be mindful of where you step. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the serene scenery and the picturesque beach.

6. Baggao’s Bluewater Falls and Cave

Baggao Bluewater Falls and Cave is a natural waterpark in the municipality of Baggao. It’s an underrated destination in Cagayan, where people can enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the natural pools, and explore the caves.

This park should be included in your itinerary if you’re looking for adrenaline-filled activities. Get ready to embark on an adventure where you can go trekking, river crossing, canyoneering, and spelunking.

7. Casagan Bridge & River

Casagan Bridge is located in Sta. Ana and it takes about 15 minutes to get there from the town properly. The bridge was built in 2018 on top of the Casagan Takuli River, which is the residents’ primary source of livelihood thanks to its abundant supply of edible shells and fish.

Casagan Santa Ana Cagayan

It’s one of the places we went to during the fam trip with CEZA. The bridge’s structure was made with planks of wood, steel cables, and chicken wire. It’s narrow, but light vehicles like motorbikes and bicycles can pass through it. I was able to walk over the bridge and take some photos; it swayed a little, but the bridge was sturdy, so there was nothing to worry about. This is a nice side trip when you visit Cagayan.

8. Buntun Bridge

Buntun Bridge crosses the Cagayan River from Tuguegararo city to Solana. The bridge was made with 14 Japanese steel spans. It took three administrations to complete the structure, beginning in 1959 under former President Carlos P. Garcia. Constructions continued during the term of former President Diosdado Macapagal, but it wasn’t until 1969 that it was finally finished and officially opened under former President Ferdinand Marcos.

At 1,369 m, it’s the second longest bridge in the Philippines after the San Juanico Bridge and the longest among river bridges in the country.

The bridge is the gateway to Tuguegarao City. It offers an unobstructed view of the Cagayan River; thus, the bridge became a tourist attraction in itself. It’s also a good vantage point for photographing the Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountains and the sunset.

9. Dumasag River

Dumasag River is located in Sitio Limbus, Barangay Rapuli, Sta Ana. The National Irrigation Authority originally intended the river to become a water resource for the rice fields in the area. Later on, it was developed into a tourist attraction due to its natural beauty.

Dumasag River Cagayan

Visit the Dumasag river and experience the slow and chill vibe of the province. You can go swimming here, slide down the makeshift waterslides, rent a tent, relax, and interact with the friendly locals.

10. Sierra Cave

The Sierra Cave is a living karst cave in Cagayan Valley situated in Peñablanca. It’s included in the 300 caves identified by the National Museum of the Philippines.

You will be amazed to see the beautiful limestone formations as well as the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave. While the cave is generally easy to navigate, some tunnels are so narrow getting through them is going to be quite an experience. One such tunnel is Celica’s Passage, which is only 2 feet in diameter.

11. Buwacag Falls

Bucawag Falls is situated in Barangay Sta Clara, in the municipality of Sta. Ana. It’s part of Cagayan’s eco-50-hectare tourism site. The name “bucawag” means the deafening sound of flowing waters. The site is being preserved and managed by the Bucawag Eco-Tourism Association or BETA.

Buwacag Falls Santa Ana Cagayan

If you’re up for some physical challenge in exchange for the breathtaking views of the waterfalls and a refreshing dip in the natural pools, you should visit Bucawag. You will trek through the thick forest, past several rivers and different tiers of waterfalls. The trek is going to be challenging as the rocks are slippery, but there are safety ropes along the trail so you can definitely do it.

12. St. Peter’s Cathedral

St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral is a Baroque church built in the 18th century. It is also known as Tuguegarao Cathedral, and you can find it at Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City. The church used to be the seat of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, founded by Dominican friars.

St. Peter’s Cathedral

Whether religious or not, you will be astonished by the beautiful architectural design of the church. Made with sand, gravel, cement, mortar, steel, and bricks, the church has withstood the test of time, including World War II, where it suffered tremendous damage. It has since been restored and is now considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Tuguegarao city.

13. San Vicente Port (Santa Ana)

San Vicente Fish Port is an anchorage in Dugo, San Vicente Road, in the municipality of Sta Ana. This is the jump point for island-hopping activities, including the boat trip to Palaui Islands.

San Vicente Port Santa Ana Cagayan

The port is not just a starting point for every island hopping activity but a destination in itself. There, you can watch the fishermen and boatmen as they go about their day. If you want a glimpse of local living, this is one of the best spots to do it.

14. Iguig Calvary Hills

Iguig Cavalry Hills is located on Cagayan Valley Road in the municipality of Iguig. It’s a known pilgrimage site in Cagayan, especially during the Holy Week or the Lenten Season. It was built in 1892, and it has 14 stations of the cross and a church called San Antonio de Galicia.

Even if you’re not Catholic, the Calvary Hills is an exciting tourist destination. It sits on top of a hill, offering a scenic view of gentle green slopes and the Cagayan River.

15. Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat

The Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat, also known as Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de Piat, is located at Poblacion, Piat. It’s considered the Pilgrimage Center of Northeast Luzon. The church dates back to 1604 and is home to Madonna Our Lady of Piat, a brown-colored image of the virgin mary that is over a century old. It’s also a pilgrimage site, attracting many devotees, especially during the Sambali Festival and the feast of Our Lady of Piat, both are celebrated in July.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Piat is one of the 18 minor basilicas in the Philippines; for this alone, it’s worth checking out. The church is made of bricks with a curved wooden ceiling. Its simplicity makes the church unique, as most old churches in Cagayan have more lavish interiors and designs.

Northern Luzon Visitors Guide

northern philippines tourist spots

This brief guide to Northern Luzon will let you know how to get there, what to do, eat, and drink, where to stay, and must-see spots.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Luzon is the largest island in the Philippines.  The most populous too!  While it’s most known as the location of the country’s capital, the northern part of it is a dream destination for nature lovers.  It is home to spectacular towering mountains, wondrous rice terraces, beautiful beaches, and scenic views of forests and lush greeneries.  From the towering Mt. Pulag and the fascinating Banaue Rice Terraces to the coasts of La Union and the rolling hills of Batanes , there’s so much to explore and do when in this part of the country.

You’ll be feasting not only your eyes, you’ll be in for some culinary experiences, too, with Ilocano cuisine as one of the most popular in the Philippines.

Northern Luzon Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Northern Luzon summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Northern Luzon in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Northern Luzon.

1 | Marvel at the rice terraces in Cordillera

While the one in Banaue is the most popular, there are actually other rice terraces found in Cordillera particularly in the provinces of Abra , Benguet , Ifugao , Kalinga , and Mountain Province .  These majestic manmade wonders have been around for hundreds of years yet they continue to impress everyone by the way they were built using traditional practices.  The ancient staircase-like paddies are a popular attraction and have become an icon of the region.

2 | Climb Mount Pulag

Mount Pulag is the highest peak in Luzon and the third highest in the country.  It is most known for its sea of clouds and the breathtaking view of the sunrise, sunset, and Milky Way Galaxy at dawn therefore attracting several mountain climbers and hikers.  Not only that, the mountain is also home to a large diversity of flora and fauna so that makes the climb more interesting and rewarding.

3 | Hike at Sierra Madre

Aside from Mount Pulag, Northern Luzon also has Sierra Madre, the longest mountain range in the Philippines.  Its highest peak may not be as high as Mount Pulag but it’s a favorite destination among adventure seekers as there are national parks and protected areas, major rivers along the mountain range, several waterfalls, and a volcano.  It has rich biodiversity and some endangered species endemic to the Philippines are found within its range.

4 | Escape to Batanes

Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province in the country.  It takes pride in its unspoilt beauty of rolling hills and picturesque pastureland as well as postcard-worthy lighthouses and stone houses.  It is a perfect destination for anyone seeking a peaceful refuge and to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

5 | See the heritage sites in Ilocos Sur

When talking about Ilocos Sur , the first thing that comes to mind is Vigan .  Aside from being the capital of the province, its heritage houses, cobblestone streets, and Spanish architecture attract tourists who are into these things.  But there is more to Vigan and Ilocos Sur than its rich history.  In the province is a mini zoo and an adventure zone.  You can even try your skill in loom weaving and pottery.  Ilocos Sur is truly a great destination to walk down memory lane and learn a craft or two.

6 | Explore Ilocos Norte

While in the region, you shouldn’t miss Ilocos Norte .  It has its own share of rich heritage in the form of centuries-old churches, museum, bell tower, and a historical lighthouse made of bricks and bronze cupola.  The province is even more interesting especially for thrill-seekers as it has Suba Sand Dunes where one can experience a 4×4 trail ride and unlimited sand boarding.  And if those aren’t enough, you’d get to feast your eyes on the breathtaking views at the Patapat Viaduct, Bangui Windmills, and Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

7 | Experience authentic Ilocano cuisine

Ilocano dishes are known to be tasty and delicious, almost unforgettable.  There’s no better place to experience authentic Ilocano cuisine than in Ilocos.  Try bagnet, pinakbet, dinengneng, pinapaitan, and don’t forget to bring home empanada and Vigan longganisa.

8 | Surf in La Union

La Union , particularly the town of San Juan, is a popular surfing spot in this part of the country.  In addition to great surf breaks, it’s become a favorite destination among surfers beginners and experts alike due to its close proximity to Manila .  Around the town are surf shops and schools, beach bars, restaurants, and resorts for more comfortable, relaxing, and fun stay.

9 | Enjoy the cooler temperature in Baguio

Baguio City enjoys a colder climate which is about 7 to 8 degrees Celsius lower than most cities in the country.  Tourists flock the city to escape the heat especially during summer which therefore earned the city the nickname Summer Capital of the Philippines.  Aside from being a summer refuge in the mountains, Baguio City is also a melting pot of history, culture, relaxation, and nature – a great place for family and friends to explore and unwind.

10 | Get traditional tattoo in Kalinga

Several local and foreign tourists alike endure the 10-hour drive to Buscalan in Kalinga to meet and get inked by Apo Whang-od, the oldest mambabatok (traditional tattooist) in the country.  Batok is a traditional hand-tapped tattooing using a thorn from a citrus tree attached to a bamboo stick.  The ink is made up of a mixture of ink and water.  While she’s often referred to as the last mambabatok, she’s training a grandniece to continue the tradition.

NOTE: The Panagbenga Festival in Baguio City occurs annually every 4th Sunday of February.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skyscanner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Northern Luzon.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Northern Luzon, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling Northern Luzon or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Some practical information before your trip to the Philippines

First and foremost, we recommend that you do not rent a car in the Philippines , as driving is very different from here and quite dangerous if you are not used to it. The roads are not always adapted, scooters are very (very) numerous and especially at rush hours, which makes traffic complicated (high density). Moreover, you need an international driving licence or you will not be able to drive a car. When you are in the big cities, you can use the “ Grab ” application to get around, it is the equivalent of Uber in Southeast Asia.

You want to buy a paper travel guide ? We recommend this one ! In our opinion, it is the most complete and the most visual!

Need a road map to prepare your itinerary? We recommend this one , the most detailed and the most pleasant to read !
