Why Sweden’s Second City—Gothenburg—Is a Must-Visit

Gothenburg City

Sweden’s second-largest city is often overshadowed by the capital, Stockholm. But the popularity of Gothenburg—birthplace of Volvo (and Alicia Vikander), home to Michelin-star restaurants, picturesque architecture, sophisticated bar culture, renowned galleries and art museums, and designer shops—has exploded in the last few years. Being the the second city allows Gothenburg the freedom to be more relaxed than her older sibling, a feeling that’s aided by the refreshing sea air. When you come for a visit, wind your way down the cobblestone streets or take one of the charming blue and white trams (though almost everything is walkable) as you peruse these Gothenburg gems.

Strömmingsluckan and Beijing 8

Restaurants During the last several years, Gothenburg’s restaurant scene has grown by leaps and bounds. One of the brightest stars would have to be Toso , a pan-Asian pearl in the heart of the city, known for its ingenious cocktails and eclectic menu. Other notable favorites include dim sum spot Made in China , which is revered for its steamed buns; Beijing8 , the place to revel in divine dumplings; and Moon Thai Kitchen , with cuisine that’s part Thai and part Swedish.

Sjömagasinet and Cyrano

Sjömagasinet and Cyrano

The legenary Sjömagasinet is the place to go for updated takes on traditional Swedish cuisine. For Swedish seafood on the fly, fried herring at the food truck Strömmingsluckan , in the heart of trendy street Magasinsgatan, will tickle anyone’s taste buds. For burger lovers who prefer turf over surf, a few doors down, the Barn offers wallet friendly, high-quality hamburgers, as well as mouthwatering sides like sweet potato fries and truffle mayonnaise. If there is such a thing as upscale fast food, Cyrano , with its wood-fired pizzas, seems to have found the formula.

Kaf Magasinet and Juicekällan

Kafé Magasinet and Juicekällan

Cafes Gothenburg’s first cafe was established around 1770, and today, the city offers several hundred places to partake in a traditional Swedish fika (a cup of coffee accompanied by a small snack). Step into the old world of fika at Brogyllen , where one can enjoy handmade sandwiches and one of the heavenly pastries. The winner of 2015’s Cafe of the Year competition was Da Matteo , famous for its sourdough bread and cinnamon buns.

One traditionally associates fika with sweet treats, but some cafes are putting a healthy spin on the snack. Kafé Magasinet serves salads, acai bowls, and raw food cakes. If a liquid munch is all you desire, stop at Juicekällan . Its creative blends of organic juices and smoothies will make you a regular in no time. If all you dream of is your next cup of coffee, the Italian hole-in-the-wall Bar Centro is your spot.

Drinks If you plan on exploring Gothenburg by night, a glass of bubbly in the lush and romantic outdoor garden at Champagnebaren Forssén & Öberg is a delightful way to start your evening. In need of a stiffer adult libation? Puta Madre ’s bar offers the largest selection of tequila in Scandinavia (327 different choices, to be precise). Before hitting the sheets or painting the town red, order a cocktail at the outdoor Bar Himmel , steps from most of the night clubs on the boulevard Avenyn.

Shops The upscale and popular shopping gallery Nordiska Kompaniet , or NK, has a little bit of everything, from beauty products to housewares. Nearby is Grace , a small store with a wonderfully curated selection of both international brands and Scandinavian designers. Mouche’s the Apartment , a concept store with panache, looks more like a Parisian home and carries a multitude of fashion-forward brands.

Artilleriet and Hotel Pigalle

Artilleriet and Hotel Pigalle

If you’re looking for something to spruce up your home, enter Artilleriet at your own risk, as your mind will race to find space at home for the scented candles, high-quality kitchenware, printed cushions, and exclusive bed linens. Another design temple is Tinna , which carries the quintessential Swedish brand Svenskt Tenn , as well as famous designs by Josef Frank and Skultuna. Looking for the quirky side of Swedish design? Peruse Antikhallarna , Gothenburg’s antique arcade filled with tiny, charming stores bursting with antique jewelry, vintage stamps, and china.

Indoor food markets are aplenty in Gothenburg. Saluhallen is full of vibrant food stands and restaurants. Directly across the way is another of Gothenburg’s favorites, Aldardo , which predominantly offers Italian delicacies like fresh handmade pasta, aged Parmesan cheese, and antipasti. Bring your shopping day to a close at the flower shop Floramor & Krukatös and grab a bouquet of peonies.

Hotels The Clarion Hotel Post is the perfect mix of old and new. The hotel is housed in an old post office building and offers a splendid rooftop pool, a spa, and two excellent restaurants. Dorsia Hotel , known for its avant-garde interior, also offers a wonderful menu in its restaurant. Hotel Pigalle , a luxury boutique hotel, transports you to turn-of-the-century Paris, while her sister hotel, Hotel Bellora , located blocks away, feels transported from the 1960s Italian Riviera, complete with a rooftop bar that’s been named as one of the world’s best.

Hagabadet

Places to Visit To recharge your battery after all the shopping, fika, and restaurants, spend an afternoon at Hagabadet , an exclusive spa located in the picturesque district Haga. If you prefer nature instead, take a stroll among blossoming flowers and lush trees in the park Trädgårdsföreningen , one of Europe’s most well-preserved parks from the 17th century.

Not many shutterbugs would say no to a visit to the photo exhibitions at the Hasselblad Foundation at Gothenburg Museum of Art in Götaplatsen, which features both established international photographers as well as young Swedish artists. For more design and art experiences while in town, head to Röda Sten Konsthall for inspiring exhibitions and workshops. Don’t forget to leave a mark on the graffiti wall, the only legal place for graffiti in Gothenburg.

From nautical adventures to cozy meals, and from thrill rides to nature walks, there’s an abundance of things to do in Gothenburg.

Goteborg, Sweden’s second largest city, may have a name that’s almost impossible for foreigners to pronounce—it sounds something like “Yuteyorgha” to untrained ears (foreigners can stick to the anglicized Gothenburg)—but its abundance of fun is familiar to all. This moated city in the west of Sweden feels more like a large town than a big city, with its inviting tangle of waterways, parks, and squares.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Ride the Paddan Boats

Arrive in Gothenburg and go for a wander and you may get the sense it’s just a tangle of waterways. But on a paddan boat tour, you start to understand the strategic interplay between the river, the moat, and the lock-guarded canal, all while taking in views of the city. Not only is it a great way to get the lay of the land, it’s also an adventure in of itself—the paddan boats are low because they convey passengers underneath more than 20 of the city’s bridges, a few of them low enough that you’ll have to duck (really duck) to make it under with your hat, and head, untouched.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Explore Fiskekorkan

Swedes worship the bounty of the local waters, so it’s entirely fitting that Gothenburg’s fish market is called Feskakorka, which translates to “fish church.” The design of the building, constructed in 1874, was inspired by Norwegian stave churches and Gothic churches. Enter Feskakorka, which sits nestled along the city’s moat, and you’ll discover a wide open space lined with stalls selling the freshest local seafood. Even if you’re not outfitted for cooking, you can still sample—just head to Restaurang Gabriel , which crowns the second floor balcony. It’s an ideal place to feast on oysters, local crayfish and shrimp, herring, and more.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Wander the Botanical Garden

Ready for a surprise? Gothenburg is home to one of Europe’s largest and most diverse botanical gardens . With more than 16,000 species of plants—including the largest tropical orchid collection in Sweden and the rare Easter Island tree—it’s a place where you can wander for hours, enjoying the long summer days (it’s open from 9 am to 9 pm). If you’re, say, looking for a more strenuous trek to work off a few of those cinnamon rolls, venture into the neighboring nature reserve, Anggardsbergen , for peaceful paths that will take you through valleys and up to ridges where you’ll get a spectacular view of the city.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Shop

Swedish design aficionados, local fashion lovers, and anyone looking for a great cup of coffee and a warm cinnamon bun converge on the charming backstreets of the inner city. Magasinsgatan, Vallgatan, and Sodra Larmgatan offer trendy local brands against an unmistakably Swedish backdrop. To escape inclement weather and find all your favorite brands, head to the surprisingly-tucked-away-but-huge Nordstan Shopping Centre, which has more than 200 shops. Cross the moat and stroll to the Haga quarter for hip boutiques, cool bars, and giant cinnamon buns.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Take the Ferry

Catch a ride on one of the ferries that plies the river and you’ll get a mini-sightseeing cruise on the cheap. In water-rich Gothenburg, ferries are part of the public transportation system, and are either free or included in the cost of a day pass. In good weather, it’s one of the best things to do in Gothenburg—you can take in the views from the open deck, and on chillier days you’ll still get a great view from inside. For a nice survey of the surroundings that takes about an hour round-trip, hop the Alvsnabben river ferry that leaves from Lilla Bommen harbor, a 10-minute walk from Gothenburg’s train station.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Eat

Eating well is a big part of life in Gothenburg. Make like a local and browse the stalls at Saluhallen, an indoor market right in the central old city bursting with the freshest local produce and seafood. It’s also a great place to pick up some local cheese (try the Prastost, or priest cheese) and sample a Gothenburg truffle, dark chocolate topped with sea salt.  The fiskekorke, or fish church, has beautiful displays of the freshest local seafood. And Michelin-starred restaurants like Sjomagasinet, Koka, and Bhoga give you a taste of the best of West Sweden.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Visit the Archipelago

Gothenburg’s  archipelago puts wild islands and tiny villages within easy reach of city visitors. More than 20 islands stretch along the coast and are an easy ferry trip away. On these islands, you’ll find hiking and biking trails, seal safaris, kayaking, boat excursions, and fishing, all set against a slower pace of life. Build a visit in as a day trip or stay for a night or two to add some serious nature to your city escape.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Scream at Liseberg

Imagine lush gardens … echoing screams of joy. Liseberg amusement park is Gothenburg’s most popular attraction, but it doesn’t just draw in thrill-seekers. That’s because, mixed in among the parks more than 40 thrill rides are extensive gardens, a sculpture park, concert venues, plus nearly a dozen restaurants serving up everything from Swedish seafood to vegetarian gourmet dishes.

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Enjoy Fika

To experience Gothenburg like a local, make room in your day for a few stops at local cafes and bakeries for fika, or coffee break. The Swedish tradition of pausing your day for a bit of socializing, coffee, and a snack fits effortlessly into a long day of sightseeing. Not only is it a great chance to rest between activities, it’s also an opportunity to taste your way through the icons of fika—cinnamon buns, cakes, cookies, and open-faced sandwiches at cafes around the city .

Things to Do in Gothenburg: Visit Museums

Gothenburg museums celebrate not only art but also aviation, history, fishing, sports, and even the country’s beloved Volvo cars. The city’s 22 museums inspire curiosity and many are surprisingly affordable. The Goteborg City Card is a must if you’re planning on visiting a few museums, since it offers admission to many plus tram, bus, and ferry travel.

Authoritative and influential, Condé Nast Traveller’s flagship properties include their annual Readers’ Choice Awards, Gold List and Hot List.

With a dedicated editorial team based in Munich, Germany will join as the 8th owned and operated market for Condé Nast Traveller and is part of a larger strategy to expand Condé Nast’s market reach with its brands. Conde Nast Traveler was launched in the US more than 35 years ago; in autumn 2023, it launched an O&O edition in the Middle East. It also has O&O editions in the UK, Spain, Italy, India and China.

The first print issue of Condé Nast Traveller Germany hits newsstands in fall 2024. It will publish six issues per year accompanied by a robust digital and social media presence. The Munich-based editorial team will report to Divia Thani, Global Editorial Director, Condé Nast Traveler, and work closely with the brand’s international editorial teams. More details on the German editorial team will follow soon.

“We are so excited to launch Condé Nast Traveller in Germany, which has always been such a vibrant and sophisticated travel market. It also gives us a unique opportunity to create local stories here that we will be able to export across our international platforms, doing more to showcase Germany as a rich and unique destination for global travellers”, says Divia Thani, Global Editorial Director, Condé Nast Traveler.

Andrea Latten, Chief Business Officer, Condé Nast Germany, adds: “For Condé Nast Germany, the launch of Condé Nast Traveller is an exciting business opportunity that will allow us to tap into a new market segment and expand our target group. We are looking forward to reaching this milestone. It is an important signal to the market and for Condé Nast Germany.”

Condé Nast Traveller Germany is the fifth brand in the portfolio of Condé Nast Germany alongside AD Architectural Digest, GLAMOUR, GQ and VOGUE.

Age of Experience

I recently reconnected with my college friend Cindy, whom I’d scarcely seen since the summer after graduation when we traveled for a month throughout Italy and France. She reminded me of the time we raced back to the youth hostel in Verona after an openair concert in the amphitheater to make curfew. I can still hear the clapping of flip-flops on cobblestones behind us and the hopeful lilt of Australian accents calling for us to hold the doors open. We made plans to meet those same Aussies in Avignon later that month, the logical coda to an easy kinship born of averted misadventure. That night, we all slipped into our travel sheets, money belts safely stowed, and slept the deep hummingbird sleep that only relief brings. Nostalgia sparked a conversation…

EDITOR’S ITINERARY

Go Now Chicago Culture Fix I’m the kind of Chicagophile who heads there even when temps dip to six degrees in January (which is when I’ll warm up with an old fashioned at Big Star). But I’m angling to visit this month, not so much for the glorious weather as for everything else going on. EXPO Chicago, a contemporary art fair shaping up to rival Frieze, will debut on September 13 with 135 galleries represented, including Gagosian and Perrotin. Later that week, the Chicago Architecture Biennial opens, with experimental projects installed across the city— think Burning Man for design geeks. Between visits to the DePaul Art Museum and the Hyde Park Art Center, and dinner at Roister, Grant Achatz’s rowdy but refined open-kitchen restaurant, I’ll try to make cocktails at…
