A ski trip is one of the best guy trips you can do! Some of the best ski resorts in the USA are located out west in Utah and Colorado.

There are a few simple steps to planning a ski trip .

  • Pick a Location
  • Book a Ski Resort or Lodge
  • Purchase Ski Clothes
  • Rent Skis or Snowboard

If anyone in your group is a beginner skier/snowboarder lessons are essential!  It will make or break your guy trip.  Also, there are better ski resorts for beginners than others.

My dad and his buddies used to do this trip every year or so. They had so much fun hitting the slopes!

Skiing is a lot of fun and is a great idea for a guys trip!

2. Los Angeles Sports

Los Angeles is home to ten (10!) pro sports teams and is one of the best cities in the world for championship-caliber sports. If you are looking for one of the best cities for a guys weekend, LA is your place!

If you and your friends love sports, then ditch the minivan and kids soccer for a weekend and head to LA! October is the best time to go – the weather is still warm enough to relax in the sun at Santa Monica Beach or workout at the famous Muscle Beach and hit up a few games in a single weekend trip.

Pick your Sport

Take your pick from NBA pre-season / early season, NFL , college football, soccer, and playoff baseball because they’re all going on in October.

A trip to Dodger Stadium would be a guy weekend to remember. A trip to the iconic Rose Bowl would feature Chip Kelly’s top-15 UCLA Bruins. Or there’s always a reason to catch a game at the Staples Center, with LeBron and the Lakers or Kahwi Leonard and the Clippers.

And on any given Sunday, you can catch a NFL game with either the Rams or the Chargers at the brand new, state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium.

A sports trip to LA with the guys is on of the best guys trip ideas to consider and is one truly worthy of any guys trip bucket list.

Less than a three-hour drive from Las Vegas, only 150 miles from Phoenix, and well-known for hosting the jet ski world finals (annually in October), this destination showcasing sparkling blue green water will not disappoint.

Rent Jet Skis

Rent some jet skis upon arrival (or feel free to bring your own) and stay at a   local Airbnb   or at the Nautical Beachfront Resort which offers an infinity pool with a bar as well as a private beach and boat launch.

Things to Do in Lake Havasu City

Visit the famous London Bridge and then enjoy a tasty dinner at La Vita Dolce Italian Bistro & Lounge, Javelina Cantina or Sho-Gun Japanese Cuisine (make hibachi reservations in advance).

Take a 25-minute ferry ride to the California side of the lake (only $2 round trip!) to the Havasu Landing Resort & Casino for a night on the town.  Another option is to enjoy a cruise on a paddler-wheeler boat.

There are endless ways to play outdoors during a long guys weekend in Boulder , one of Colorado’s favorite towns.

Outdoor Adventure for Men

Rent Bikes and Explore

Rent bikes to take a brewery or distillery tour around town. Our favorites are Sanitas Brewing (where on-site McDevitt Taco Supply serves up some of the best tacos in town), Oskar Blues, and Ska Street Brewstillery.

Activities in Boulder Colorado

In the summer months, rent tubes and float down the Boulder Creek. During the school year, the University of Colorado is the place to be for all the college games. Visiting in winter? Take the 20-minute drive to Nederland to hit the slopes at Eldora Ski Area.

Hang out nearly anywhere on Pearl St. for the best food and mountain views, at restaurants like West End Tavern, Rio Grande, Avanti F&B, or Rosetta Hall.

Where to Stay

A stay at the outdoor-themed Basecamp Boulder (located right downtown) or at A-Lodge will add even more adventure to your guys getaway.

8. Yellowstone

If you are looking for the best guys weekend ideas, Yellowstone is a great choice. Camping at Yellowstone National Park is a great way to spend your guy vacation with friends. It's a good opportunity to get away from the norm and try something different.

I have some guy friends that do this multiple times a year. They love Yellowstone.

Why is it Awesome for Dudes

It's man vs the wild in a manner of speaking. Doesn't matter if you are an amateur outdoor camper or a hardcore enthusiast, spending time away from the city in nature really gives you some perspective.

Nothing beats hanging out around the fire in the starry night with some cold brews and your buddies to make some good memories. It is the perfect man vacation!

Where to Stay

I suggest camping at the Yellowstone Park / Mountainside KOA site.  It's about 8 miles away from the actual park with plenty of room to stretch your legs.

If you don't feel like camping in a tent, they also have cabins and enough open space to bring in your RV .  It can get cold though so remember to bundle up and keep that firewood aplenty.

Most Popular Sites

Yellowstone has some of the most majestic views. It's hard to pick just one popular site.  First and foremost, you should take part of your time to go see Artist Point which overlooks the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. It's truly breathtaking with the majestic landscape and flowing river.

Old Faithful is also a go to. This geyser is a cornerstone of Yellowstone but if you don't get there in time to see it go off don't worry as it's known for its consistency. Just take a stroll around the trail for the next hour to see the other springs and geysers.

Get ready for the wildlife too. Don't be surprised to see a herd of bison just hanging along the road as you are making your way through the park.  Moose, Elk, Wolves, and Bears are also part of the Yellowstone experience but depending on when you go may be difficult to find.

How Much Time to Spend

You don't need a whole week to explore Yellowstone. If you are making good pace even after you're recovering from the previous night you can see most of it within 3-4 days. But don't feel the need to rush. You want to enjoy this as much as possible.

If you want to take a break and revisit civilization, go to West Yellowstone . There are some great food places along with souvenir shops and general stores.

Yellowstone is one of the best guys trip destinations around.

A Utah National Park road trip is a perfect guys trip.

Alaska is the perfect guys trip!  It is known as  the “Last Frontier”. You can plan an Alaska trip from Denali National Park all the way to Kenai Fjords National Park .  There is adventure just waiting to happen at every stop.

Things to Do in Alaska

There are lots of things to do in Fairbanks , such as the Great Salmon Bake.  If you are a man with a big apatite,  this is the place you want to go.

In Talkeetna you can hire a plane to take you over Denali, river raft, and enjoy the local restaurants.

Awesome Guy Adventures

Anchorage offers some awesome guy adventures. You can bike along the coastal trail and hike in the mountains.  As you head from Anchorage to Seward on a road trip to the Kenai peninsula, there are scenic hikes, glaciers, and animal encounters along the way.

One of the most popular things to do in Seward is salmon fish.  This is the best place to fish as there are many charters to supply and guide your trip.

Merely mentioning the Democratic Republic of Congo will probably send the girls running. For the guys, the Congo is one of Africa's most exotic and adventurous places to visit.

Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking   in Virunga National Park is perhaps the most extraordinary wildlife experience on earth. Park rangers guide small groups of visitors into the jungle-clad volcanoes where these magnificent beasts live. Standing just a meter or two away from these gentle giants is an experience that you'll never forget.

After the gorilla trek, you could choose to climb to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano, to see the world's largest lava lake.

Things to Do in Langkawi

Best US Destinations For A Guys-Only Getaway

guy trips in the us

A guy's vacation is like a rite of passage to adulthood and the ultimate bonding experience. This kind of trip will never go out of style. A recent study even showed evidence that "bromances" are good for their health because make friendships increase the levels of oxytocin, the "love hormone" in the brain and make people happier.

Business trips with colleagues don't count. Plan a real getaway with your real friends. Pick a destination carefully; a trip should re-energize you, make you forget your troubles for a few days and relax you. The following destinations provide all that – plus joy, laughter and dare.

Louisville, Kentucky

Explore the bourbon capital of the world – Kentucky. This 5-day trip is a must for any bourbon admirers or anyone who would like to know more about this unique American beverage. You will visit nine distilleries and participate in several tastings so you can get feel the authenticity of each final product.

Go on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. You will get an idea of the scientific process behind making this native to America spirit while also enjoying the stunning setting in the Bluegrass State. You can also participate in The Innkeepers Bourbon Selection with Dixion and learn about some rare bourbon that you won't find in stores.

There are plenty of other bourbon experiences in Louisville, Lawrenceburg, Bardstown or Clermont. Some even offer classes on how to cook your own bourbon.

Daytona Beach, Florida and Indianapolis, Indiana

If you are into fast cars, seeing Daytona 500 or Indianapolis 500 live is a must. These iconic racing events are held on weekends so you can turn the experience into a trip. Daytona is also known as an awesome destination for bachelor parties. Enjoy the beaches, fish on the Sunglow Fishing Pier or visit the Daytona International Speedway for a track tour. As is the case with most beach cities, the nightlife does not disappoint. You'll have plenty of options for dancing, drinking and enjoying live entertainment.

If you're more into motorcycles as opposed to cars, consider an Appalachia road trip. Take West Virginia's Route 50, which is more popular as the George Washington Highway, and head east. You will eventually reach the Skyline Drive, a road on the bucket list of every traveler. It runs through Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is where you will witness some of the most stunning views ever. You'll finally get the meaning of the famous saying that "Life is about the journey, not the destination." You can start from Front Royal and drive all of the 105 miles on the Skyline Drive. Waterfalls crystallize in the winter. There are many picnic areas along the route. Many prefer the Elkwallow and South River because of the opportunities to "meet" with raptors and many animals.

Silverton Mountain, Colorado

Heli skiing is expensive but the Silverton Mountain Guides have some packages that come at reasonable prices. They guarantee six runs during the day and have access to some of the best big mountain skiing in Colorado's San Juan range, close to Telluride and Crested Butte, which gets a tremendous amount of snow. They take the chopper up to Alaska, where Silverton Mountain Guides offer full week luxury heli skiing vacations.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Vegas is the ultimate guys destination, famously known for some crazy bachelor parties. America's Sin City is a must-visit. It has changed in recent years and many associate it with wild parties as opposed to gambling. The variety of bars, lounges and night clubs in this fun haven will blow your mind.

Ocean City, Maryland

This resort city has plenty to offer – boardwalk for awesome days at the beach and fun party nights. Don't miss out on some of the best seafood in the country. Check out Assateague's famous wild ponies, just 9 miles away. Hike "with" foxes and thousands of birds around you. The golf enthusiasts will be pleased too. Ocean City has some of the most challenging courses around.

Humboldt County, California

Test yourself and your friends and see which one of you can reach the top of 1,500-year-old, 300-foot-tall trees. The answer should be "no one," because doing so is illegal and you may get in a lot of trouble. Join a canopy tour and you'll actually get to climb some of them. A panoramic view of the Redwood National Park is totally worth it. Take a zip line tour for even more fun.

North Maine Woods, Maine

Why not go on a canoe trip on the Allagash River? You will get to live like people in the mid 1800's did. The ride starts at Chamberlain Lake and goes through pine forests and rapids. If you're not careful, this can turn into the ultimate survival experience. You'll definitely need your buddies with you then.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Mardi Gras, anyone? You won't find a place in the U.S. that celebrates it better. Enjoy some of the best food in the South, if not in the whole country, and great music clubs and bars. The atmosphere is unconventional but fun. For those of who need a few days of more quiet time, you'll like the fishing and golf opportunities.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

How does paddling through miles of powerful white waters sound? Extremely challenging and exciting. The whole trip can be more than two weeks long as you navigate the Colorado River through a deep canyon. You'll probably qualify to teach geology classes afterwards. Raft trips are also available for those who prefer a more conventional adventure. Many men go on long mountain-bike trips along the northern rim.

The 9 Ultimate Guy Trips for 2021

Where to go, what to drive, and which places to stay.

preview for How This Man Carved A Killer Six-Pack And Became An Adventure Athlete

By plane! By train! By good ol’ automobile! Who cares where as long as it’s not home, right? These nine unsung guy trips will satisfy your sense of adventure and keep you safe in the kinda/sorta post-Covid world.

FOR THE CLIMBER ...

guy trips

TELLURIDE, COLORADO

The adventure: Conquer the Via Ferrata

You know the town for its skiing and film festival, but the hiking trails. You’ll find dozens of them, covering more than 60 miles in total, close to town. The must-do is the Via Ferrata, aka the Iron Path, a two- mile trek that includes (but is not limited to) carved steps, rope ladders, suspension bridges, and caves, with a peak summit of 500 vertical feet. On dangerous sections, you can clip your harness onto a steel cable so you’re protected if you fall.

Drive this ...

A Kia Telluride. The name tracks. But you can fit eight people in the SUV. Those are minivan numbers—and this beast drives like anything but a minivan.

Stay here ...

A 500-foot summit not enough? Book a night at the Peaks Resort & Spa, with access to an indoor/outdoor lap pool, three tennis courts, and two pickleball courts to keep you moving.

FOR THE CAMPER ...

man enjoying a day of paddleboarding on a river with his dog

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA

The adventure: Paddleboard the Three Rivers

Aka the Broad, Congaree, and Saluda rivers. They’re all accessible through the band of national parkland that rests within a half hour of downtown. Warm up with the Broad River Blueway, which is wide and slow. Then it’s up to you what’s next. The Saluda offers quiet, tree-lined waters; the Congaree flows through downtown Columbia, so you may hit (water) traffic.

Sleek enough for city streets but tough enough for off-roading, Subaru’s Outback Wilderness will carry you and your gear to any stand-up-paddleboard put-in spot. Its X-Mode function sets up the chassis and drivetrain for optimal traction in everything from dirt to deep snow.

Pitch a tent next to the scenic Lake Russell at one of Calhoun Falls State Park’s campsites. If roughing it isn’t your thing, rent a two-bedroom cabin (with air-conditioning!) at Santee State Park, which overlooks Lake Marion, the largest lake in the state.

FOR THE MARATHONER ...

guy trips

SAUSALITO, CALIFORNIA

The adventure: Trail-run (or hike) the Ninja Loop

Start at the Golden Gate Bridge parking lot, warm up on the slow-descent Coastal Trailhead, climb the Miwok Trail, coast down the Tennessee Valley Trail, power past the horse stables, and move on to Marincello, where you’ll grind upward until you reach views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Refuel from the ten-miler at Copita with tacos al pastor.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E EV is an all-electric SUV with a 230-mile range, which means you can book a hotel in San Francisco or San Jose and still be within range.

After hitting the trails, recover with an in-room deep-tissue massage at the Inn Above Tide, which has waterfront views of Angel Island. If you’re looking for a different kind of recovery, head a half hour north to Sonoma wine country.

FOR THE ADRENALINE JUNKIE ...

guy trips

LA GRANDE, OREGON

The adventure: Paraglide through the clouds

Cycle along a section of the 134-mile Grande Tour Scenic Bikeway, which runs through La Grande, and take in views of the nearby Wallowa and Blue mountains. When you’re done, Oregon Paramotor offers eight-day paramotor courses (think paragliding but with an engine) to explore the east-Oregon skies.

No lie, the Bronco Sport has a GOAT mode. That’s “goes over any terrain,” a claim backed by its standard 4x4 system and optional lifted suspension. Its roof rack lugs up to 150 pounds, too.

Grab a suite at the Landing Hotel for easy access to the entire valley, or stay farther away at the pet-friendly Barking Mad Farm Bed & Breakfast, where pigs, goats, and chickens roam the land. Just two miles away is the Terminal Gravity Brewing Company, famous for its IPA.

FOR THE ANGLER ....

a line caught fish being pulled onto a fishing boat with a spear by a crew member

WANCHESE, NORTH CAROLINA

The adventure ...

Fish the deep sea On the southern end of Roanoke Island sits this fishing village undiscovered by most tourists. Grab a six-pack, charter a boat at the Wanchese Marina, and go battle feisty (and delicious) Spanish mackerel and acrobatic mahi-mahi (also delicious). Bonus: All that reeling counts as a forearm workout.

The Ram 1500 with eTorque Hybrid technology averages 26 miles per gallon, and the quad cab is roomy enough to stash tackle boxes, hard coolers, and camping gear if you’re overnighting it.

Each beachfront, four-bedroom cottage at Nags Head’s Haven on the Banks has its own hot tub and gas grill to cook up your catch of the day. Afterward, head to the beach, start a fire, and take in the views of the area.

FOR THE TRULY WILD ...

luanne horting tandem base

TWIN FALLS, IDAHO

The adventure: BASE jump (no, honestly)

First off, you’ll have an experienced jumper with you. Tandem BASE provides the equipment and instruction to leap from the 486-foot-tall Perrine Bridge. You’ll work up the intestinal fortitude to sign a waiver and then plummet toward—and eventually rest easy in—Snake River Canyon.

The all-wheel-drive, 158- horsepower, sporty-as-all-get-out VW Taos is your go-to dependable vehicle when you’re about to head out and do something wild.

After a nine-minute drive from the Snake River Canyon trail, you’ll feel like you’re at home at the Fillmore Inn . . . because it’s literally in someone’s home. The tiny bed-and-breakfast lies at the heart of Twin Falls, just a few minutes’ walk from Koto Brewing Co. and its more than 20 beers on tap.

FOR THE INTERNATIONAL TRAVELER ...

KOROSKA, SLOVENIA

Beneath Mount Peca, you’ll find three miles of winding bike trails in the tunnels of an abandoned mine. Descend even farther and you’ll see a kayaker’s playground: an underground lake with crystal-clear water and few tourists in sight.

A one-and-a-half-hour drive from Cairo, the coastal city of Ain Sokhna has several scuba-diving reefs, a kite- surfing center, and pristine beaches to take in the blue waters of the Gulf of Suez.

Top 10 Guy Trips

Guys' trip

Bachelor parties, Father’s Day, or a big birthday celebration – there’s no shortage of reasons to get away with the guys. The next time you boys need some time off from the girls (ladies, you can check out our picks for the Top 10 Girl Getaways instead), skip the afternoon outing in favor of a full-blown guy trip! We’ve thought outside the sports-golf-beer-swilling box (though those vacations are all options, too) to round up the 10 best activities and destinations where you can hang with your bros. Think catching swordfish and marlin in Panama, smoking ribs and grilling steaks in Napa, and, yes, downing liters of beer in Munich, the capital of Oktoberfest (hey, it’s a cultural experience). Plus, we’ve hand-picked a package for each vacation destination, so you and the guys can plot your escape today. Get a preview of these dude-friendly destinations with our Guy Trips slideshow .

BBQ in Napa

Guys who think cooking is “women’s work” obviously missed the memo, because the majority of the world’s top-rated chefs are men. You may never own a Michelin-starred restaurant, but there’s no better place to learn the basics than the Culinary Institute of America ( www.ciachef.edu ) in Northern California’s Napa Valley. The C.I.A. offers a variety of culinary Boot Camp vacation courses, including a very macho grilling class that teach students how to grill the perfect steak, smoke ribs, and concoct an authentic Kansas City-style marinade – meaning you’ll be the ultimate barbecue man on the block in no time. If it gets too hot in the kitchen, steer your guy trip towards one of Napa Valley’s superb restaurants, where you can sit back and let someone else do the cooking, or enjoy the fruit of the vine at one of the Valley’s 400-plus wineries.

Book It: The C.I.A.’s location in St. Helena ( www.ciachef.edu/californi a) offers Grilling & BBQ Boot Camp courses in 2011 (August 29–30; November 16–17). The intensive two-day program is $895 per person and includes charcoal and gas grill orientation, lecture, hands-on cooking, one-on-one chef time, and your very own chef’s uniform. The school also has a more toned-down, half-day grilling course on barbecue basics for $250 per person (July 23).

Catch a Baseball Game in Boston

Even a die-hard Yankees fan can’t deny Boston's place in baseball history. The beloved Boston Red Sox (known locally as the Sawx) are such an integral part of the city’s identity that even ambivalence is considered blasphemy. Their fans are fanatical and their home, Fenway Park ( boston.redsox.mlb.com ), looks very much like it did when the first game was played there in 1912. The best time for a guy trip to see the boys of summer in action is – well, the summer – but no matter what time of year you visit Boston, you can always take a tour of Fenway Park for a behind-the-scenes look at one of baseball’s most famous franchises.

Book It: The centrally located Omni Parker House ( www.omnihotels.com ) offers an overnight deal on select Saturdays from June through September that includes deluxe accommodations and two tickets to a Saturday game from $221 per night.

See our Boston Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Drink Beer in Bavaria

There may be no better place on earth for beer lovers than Bavaria, Germany’s largest state. The capital city of Munich is home to the world-famous Oktoberfest ( www.oktoberfest.de ), but there’s plenty of sud-sipping to be done in Bavaria all year long. Beer gardens and beer halls abound, as do centuries-old breweries whose output adheres to the strict "purity" standards set forth in 1516. With so many places to lift a glass and say prost! , you might not have much time for sightseeing; but if you do take a break from imbibing, there are plenty of castles, monasteries, medieval villages, lakes, and mountains to explore. For more great guy trip destinations to throw back a few, check out our Top 10 Cities for Beer Lovers .

Book It: BeerTrips.com (www.beertrips.com/trips/oktoberfest.htm ) offers a 10-day tour of Prague, Munich (during Oktoberfest), and Bamberg this fall (September 14–24, 2011). The land-only price of $2,895 includes accommodations, transportation, brewery tours, and more.

See our Bavaria Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Golf in Ponte Vedra Beach

Unless you’ve whittled your handicap down to scratch, you won’t be playing on the PGA tour. Instead, guy trips to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, can be rewarded with tee time at the TPC Sawgrass ( www.tpc.com/sawgrass ), home of The Players Championship. No matter what level you're at, playing a course that's as steeped in golf lore as this one is an experience best shared with the boys.

Book It: Priced from $499 per person (per night), the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa's ( www.sawgrassmarriott.com ) Stadium Package includes deluxe accommodations, one round at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, breakfast at Sawgrass’s Café on the Green, a caddy, 20 percent off a purchase at the resort golf shop, and other goodies.

Off-Road in Death Valley

Former boy scouts looking for a wilderness camping adventure should plan their guys' trip to Death Valley, California, where deep-rock canyons, old mining camps, and the arid Panamint Mountains beg to be explored. See it all via 4x4 – and if you’re feeling really adventurous, spin your wheels in the sand of the Dumont Dunes ( www.blm.gov ), some of the tallest dunes open for off-road riding. Set up camp under the stars and test your survival skills, because you’ll be sharing the land with wild donkeys, coyotes, and snakes. Pack plenty of drinking water – about 2 gallons per person, per day – if you don’t want the park’s name to predict the outcome of your trip.

Book It: Western Adventures ( www.4westernadventures.com ) offers three-night guided 4x4 tours of the region starting in the town of Trona, California, and continuing through the area’s mountains and valleys (a $100 refundable deposit applies; participants are responsible for all of their own food, fuel, site fees, and personal expenses).

See our California Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Party Like a Sports Star in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the ultimate spot for excess, a place where boys can be boys and indulge in the activities guys love: gambling, girls, and nightlife. The Hardwood Suite at the Palms Casino Resort ( www.palms.com ) will transform your trip into one of Hangover -esque history – think a basketball half-court and scoreboard, a massive hot tub, a full bar, and ”NBA-sized” beds. More basketball touches like a lavish locker room and jerseys are courtesy of Palms owner George Maloof, who also owns the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Models wearing cheerleader and referee uniforms will even act as hosts for your special night. And if you're looking for ladies, we've got you covered – we recommended Vegas as a top girls getaway , too.

Book It: Nightly rates for the Hardwood Suite start at a whopping $25,000. Two master bedrooms and three extra-large Murphy beds, plus a living room, sleep 10. But if you’re just there to party, the max capacity is 350 – invite all your closest friends and get your game on.

See our Las Vegas Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Play Cowboy in Lajitas

Nestled between Big Bend National Park ( www.nps.gov/bibe ) to the west and the Rio Grande to the south, the rugged landscape of small-town Lajitas, Texas, can inspire even the slickest city slicker to don a ten-gallon hat, pack a pistol, and settle in for a heated game of poker with his pals. The best place to corral your inner cowboy is during a guys' trip the upscale Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa’s Badlands Hotel ( www.lajitasgolfresort.com ), which recreates a Wild West frontier town feel – complete with tumbling tumbleweeds and a wooden boardwalk, albeit with modern comforts and amenities. Resort guests can easily arrange outings into the great outdoors from hunting to hiking to horseback riding.

Book It: The 25,000-acre Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa offers a two-night Born to Be Wild package from $369, which includes deluxe lodging for two, daily breakfast, a bucket of beer and wings at the Thirsty Goat Saloon, a picnic lunch, and a river road map to help navigate the property's Old West terrain (purported stomping grounds of outlaws of yore). Complement your stay with some skeet shooting, a cowboy shoot-out (instruction on Old West-style guns is available), an ATV tour, or a sunset horseback ride.

See our Texas Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Spa in Chicago

Cubs-crazed Chicago is tailor-made for guy trips; but after you’ve had your fill of sports, pizza, and jazz, head out for a relaxing day at the spa. If you secretly love to be pampered, you’re not alone – about a third of U.S. spa-goers are men. Get a superb hot-lather shave, haircut, or your back massaged (or waxed) in masculine surroundings – think pool tables, brown leather chairs, and ’40s pin-up-girl posters – at the 316 Club Barber Spa ( www.316barberspa.com ). Don’t worry: If you have to miss the Cubs game because your skin is still exfoliating, you can catch it one of the numerous flat-screen TVs in the lounge and treatment "cabanas."

Book It: The 316 Club Barber Spa attracts guy’s guys with its players-club ambiance (free beer and wine, and a Vegas-style odds board). The Pit Boss package includes a massaging shampoo, haircut, hand massage and detail, five-step shave, and shoeshine, all for $95.

See our Chicago Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Sport Fish in Panama

If the only thing you know about Panama is that is has a famous canal, it’s time for a trip to Central America. Panama is full of surprises; that it’s an excellent spot for sport fishing is one of many. Grab the guys and head south for a “reel” good catch – Panama’s waters are home to swordfish, marlin, and even some shark species. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the landscapes alone are worth a guys' trip trek – exploring the country’s tropical rain forests and untouched beaches isn’t a bad way to spend a weekend with the fellas, either.

Book It: Go sport fishing at the edge of Panama’s remote Darien Gap at Tropic Star Lodge ( www.tropicstar.com ). Pricing from $2,850 per person (plus a $500 airfare transfer fee) gets you three meals daily, resort accommodations, and three to six days of fishing from aboard a captain-equipped yacht.

See our Panama Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Surf in Sydney

The “Man” in Manly Beach isn’t the only reason for its guys' trip allure. Known as the Bondi Beach of the north, this strip of Sydney sand attracts hordes of visitors looking to kick back and ride the waves (and perhaps steal a glance at topless sunbathers, a regular sighting on local Australian beaches). Bikinis (or lack thereof) aside, men who'd rather focus on the water can master killer waves by enrolling in a local surf school and learning from the pros. Plus, once the sun goes down, you can head out and enjoy Sydney’s legendary nightlife.

Book It: The Manly Surf School ( www.manlysurfschool.com ) provides programs with qualified instructors for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Group lessons starting from $60 are available, as are private lessons from $90/hour.

Top 4 Ultimate Guys' Trips in the U.S.A.

  • For Entertainment Enthusiasts: Las Vegas, NV - You may think  Vegas is a bit of a cliche choice but, come on, it's the Entertainment Capital of the World! If you want to spend a long weekend enjoying gambling, shows and lots of drinking with your friends, Sin City simply can't be topped - just be careful how far you dip into your bank account or you might not be welcome when you get back home. It's also good to keep in mind that Vegas is scorchingly hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees in the summer. To keep yourselves cool as you hop from casino to casino, you and your buddies would be wise to wear some  light, breathable tees and boxers. If you want to add some outdoor adventure to your guys' trip to Las Vegas, the spectacularly beautiful  Zion National Park is just a 2 and a half hour drive across the Mojave Desert.
  • For Outdoorsy Types: Yosemite National Park, CA - If you and your friends' idea of rest and relaxation is taking an adventure in the great outdoors, then Yosemite National Park is a perfect destination for your ultimate guys' trip. Whether you want to camp, go for day hikes or get really adventurous with a backpacking trip, Yosemite offers miles upon miles of serene forests and steep mountains to explore and enjoy. While there's plenty to do in Yosemite, hiking up the famous Half Dome with your buddies is a must. Aside from hiking, you can also go rock climbing, mountain biking, horseback riding, kayaking or fishing in Yosemite; the opportunities for adventure are practically endless! Naturally, you're gonna get pretty damn dirty and sweaty on this trip, so be sure to pack plenty of  nice, cool socks and boxers.
  • For Sports & History Lovers: Boston, MA - As one of the oldest and coolest cities in the country, Boston is a paradise for both sports fans and history buffs, and it's a safe bet that your friend group has a bit of both. For baseball lovers, nothing will beat taking a tour and then watching a game at historic Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in the MLB. Meanwhile, basketball and hockey fans can catch a game at TD Garden, while football and soccer fans can make a short drive down to Gillette Stadium. The history nerds among your buddies will have the time of their lives visiting key locations from the American Revolution, including the site of the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party Ships and Bunker Hill. If you're up for a short drive, you can also see where the "shot heard 'round the world" was fired in Minute Man National Historic Park.
  • For Those Who Love the Open Road: Route 66 - If you and your buddies are "road trip guys," then the best guys' trip you could ask for is driving historic Route 66 . While the famed highway running from Chicago to Santa Monica was officially removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985, most of the original 2,500 mile road remains intact and allows you to cruise through some of the most scenic parts of the country. While this road trip is best driven on classic muscle cars or motorcycles, those stuck driving family friendly SUVs are sure to enjoy themselves as well. To maximize your comfort on this multi-day drive, make sure to wear  breathable boxer briefs that will keep your nuts from being sweat-glued to your thighs. There are plenty of fun attractions still standing along Route 66, so be sure to look them up before you and your pals depart.

10 Guys Trip Ideas for a Real Mancation

Last updated January 2, 2024

Why should girls have all the fun? We share ten guys trip ideas for the ultimate mancation getaway.

Once upon a time the quintessential weekend away with the guys meant playing a few rounds of golf at an uninspiring resort or chartering a boat for a deep-sea fishing excursion. These days, a guys trip is less about impish behavior and more about creating social bonds and sharing adventures (including spa retreats ).

  • Vegas, Baby! — Las Vegas
  • Surf’s Up — Bali
  • Concrete Jungle Dreams — New York
  • Hike the Inca Trail — Machu Picchu
  • Nightlife Extravaganza — Ibiza
  • Slope-Side Shenanigans — Vail
  • Fiesta Forever — Playa Del Carmen
  • Skiing in Whistler — British Columbia
  • Deep Dive — Key West
  • Music City Groove — Nashville

Scientifically speaking, group trips can lower stress levels, improve mental well-being and even increase feelings of life satisfaction. Plus, there’s no better way to share inside jokes and hilarious stories.

Whether you’re in the mood for sandy beaches, action-packed adventures or just good vibes with the guys, we’ve got you covered with ten guys trip ideas.

Sun-kissed beaches, tantalizing tacos and a nightlife that’s lit AF. Playa is not just a spring breaker’s paradise but a destination for those looking for a blend of relaxation and excitement. Rock and Roll in The City By the Bay at Hotel Zeppelin San Francisco

From the moment you walk through the doors of Hotel Zeppelin you are either going to love this place or hate the incredible hipster vibe. It's just that kind of place and frankly it works in a city that prides itself on creativity and re-imagining yesterday's cool as today's chic. I've stayed in several Hard Rock Hotels and while I've never had a bad experience - these guys have done it better with a more authentic vibe.

More Than Just Vegas - Top Spots Around The World To Play Slot Machine Games

Gambling is a hobby of millions of people globally. While some play once a week, others have turned it into a daily activity to unwind. However, as playing casino games is a global phenomenon, it’s possible to combine another lovely hobby with it, and that’s traveling. There are dozens of slot machine hotspots around the world. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular destinations that are well worth the visit.

Detroit... it's a city that's synonymous with sports, music, food, masculine heroes, and cars. It is your ideal place for a fun, unforgettable guys weekend on the riverfront where the cool breezes from the water keep the summer heat at bay and during the winter help to reduce the chill that Michigan is known for. With its rich sports heritage hosting legendary teams and easy accessibility via an impressive airport, Detroit promises both convenience to get to and a thrilling, legendary Motor City experience. Add to this fun mix some exciting gambling opportunities, world-class building sights, and affordable hotel stays - you're a winner with these things!

Over the past couple of decades, certain cities and parts of the country have emerged as particularly desirable. This often happens. A city or neighborhood becomes wildly popular, and a certain element settles there.

Las Vegas, with its glimmering neon lights, may seem like a playground of limitless revelry. However, the reality is quite different, particularly when it comes to the assumptions men often hold about bachelor party trips. You might think that all deeds in Vegas remain hidden, but the law would disagree, and being uninformed can lead to unwelcome surprises. As you gear up for this iconic pre-wedding tradition, it's vital to differentiate between truth and myth to avoid unexpected shocks. From the legal standpoint on public intoxication to the actual guidelines of Vegas strip clubs, we will debunk these mistaken beliefs one at a time. Keep reading because there's much you may not know.

More than a Dozen Places In the United States Where You Can Ride a Steam Train

Steam trains have a special place in my heart - as they do with millions of other guys and even some women too! These are giant hulking marvels of engineering represented the pinnacle of technology in their day but are still amazing to experience. In the age we live in where we covet silent, clean, smooth, and safe modes of transportation these great locomotives bring us back to a day when none of that was required - just getting the job done and opening up new opportunities to expand and profit.

A cruise is a fantastic setting for a bachelor party - exotic locations, budget-friendly, fantastic food, and depending on your ship, there's probably even an "all-inclusive" alcoholic beverage package to keep you busy cracking cold ones during the day and sipping scotch with your buddies at night. However, one question that I get frequently from guys who are looking to book a cruise with us is whether it makes sense to get individual rooms or try to get a big fancy suite and pack the guys in there. The answer is unique for every group I talk with, but it seems to be a topic that comes up regularly, so let's take a deeper look...

Central Coast California Bachelor Party Ideas For Guys Who Love Wine, Beer, Beaches and BBQ

Picture this: you and your friends making your way down the Pacific Coast Highway, headed towards your bachelor party. You're a special kind of group, enthusiasts of a luxurious Cabernet Savignon, a robust hoppy IPA, beautiful beaches, weird animals, and delectable tri-tip fresh from local ranches. Well... welcome to Central Coast, California, the destination where your wine, beer, and Santa Maria-style BBQ-infused bachelor party fantasies can come to life! With our guide, you'll learn about the top wineries, breweries, and BBQ spots, all while making lasting memories with your friends.

In recent years the cruise industry has transformed itself from a fairly niche part of the leisure industry driven more by people looking to experience something specific - such as visiting a remote island that almost nobody else ever has, or exploring rivers farther than even many of the great exploreers dared to go back in the golden years of the British Empire. These men and women were true explorers willing to sacrifice creature comforts and service for the opportunity to do something nobody else had done. Today, though, the industry has expanded, and companies like Aqua Expeditions blend the excitement of expedition cruising with the comforts of ultra-premium luxury and service.

There's More Than Just Fresh Made Fudge To Explore While Visiting Uranus On A Guys Trip

It was a hot and humid day while driving back to Michigan from San Diego this past summer and I'd passed mile after mile of Route 66 attractions without taking a moment to stop for a break. I was on a mission to deliver a car-load of booze across country and keep it as temperature controlled as I could. In a way I felt a bit like a smuggler in one of those space games I used to play... Then I discovered that I was going to be driving right by the world famous Uranus Fudge Factory... I knew I had to stop. If for nothing else, I figured it was worth a laugh to tell Heather and Jim that I stopped to get some fresh fudge from Uranus. What I didn't expect to find was that this a surprisingly comprehensive destination filled with all sorts of double entendre, dirty jokes, and "family" fun.

Best road trips in the US

Caroline Tanner

Few things say summer in the U.S. like the great American road trip. It's almost a national rite of passage dating back to Model T days, with Americans hitting the wide-open road across the 3,000 miles stretching from sea to shining sea.

From mountain roads to stunning seaside escapes, there's no shortage of fantastic road trip-worthy routes across the U.S.

Here are 10 road trips through Florida, Oregon, California and many other beautiful destinations that you can take any time of year.

If you start in the South

Overseas highway: florida.

guy trips in the us

This aptly titled highway crosses over the turquoise waters separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico via a series of 42 bridges, including the iconic Seven Mile Bridge, Florida's longest. The 100-mile journey, lined with palms and native flora, hosts retro motels, shell shops and an impressive array of fauna.

The drive takes about four hours round trip, starting from Florida City. However, you can easily extend it by starting in Miami, heading 40 miles south to Homestead for a trip to Everglades National Park, Knaus Berry Farm for cinnamon rolls and the Robert Is Here Fruit Stand for tropical provisions and smoothies before meandering down the coral cay archipelago to Key West . Note that Knaus Berry Farm is open from November through mid-April during the area's farming season.

Blue Ridge Parkway: Virginia to North Carolina

guy trips in the us

Spanning 469 miles from Virginia's Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee, the Blue Ridge Parkway is home to some of the oldest mountains in the world.

The area is lush and green from spring through summer and equally beautiful in autumn (especially from late October to mid-November) when the landscape is painted with fiery shades of red, yellow and orange.

Consider a stop in Asheville, North Carolina, a mountain town known for some of the best food and craft beer in the Southeast, along the way.

If you start in the Midwest

Route 66: illinois to california.

guy trips in the us

Dating back to 1926, Route 66 is one of America's original highways, with well-preserved historic sites and wide-open landscapes, where you'll find distinctive landmarks at each stop along the way.

In the 1940s and '50s, the 2,500-mile stretch of road from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, was the American road trip. Though it's changed since then, you'll still find plenty of Americana stops during your drive, including the World's Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, Illinois.

The section of road lying next to Interstate 40 through New Mexico and Arizona is particularly picturesque and features several notable landmarks, including Arizona's Jack Rabbit Trading Post, a popular pitstop for travelers for more than a half-century. New Mexico's 400-mile section is lined with Native American monuments and centuries-old ruins like Laguna Pueblo, and in Amarillo, Texas, the famous Cadillac Ranch art installation features rows of graffiti-painted Cadillacs sticking end-first out of the ground. Just a 12-minute drive from the Cadillacs, you'll find killer brisket at Tyler's Barbecue.

In general, spring through fall is the best time to travel Route 66. Keep in mind that while many of the road trips listed are clearly delineated from start to finish, Route 66 isn't indicated as a single route on contemporary maps, so you'll want to use a resource like Historic 66 to get turn-by-turn directions.

Great River Road National Scenic Byway: Minnesota to Louisiana

guy trips in the us

What the Pacific Coast Highway is to the Pacific Ocean the Great River Road is to the Mississippi River. Starting in northern Minnesota, the Great River Road nearly spans the width of the U.S., stretching more than 2,000 miles and ending around New Orleans.

Like Route 66, it's not just one road but rather a series of roads that follows the eastern and western sides of the Mississippi River through Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi.

Each state along the Great River Road has its own interpretative center educating travelers about the route's history: In Mississippi, you'll find the Vicksburg National Military Park Visitor Center; Missouri is where you can check out the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum; and in Iowa, there's the 200-mound-strong, prehistoric Effigy Mounds National Monument.

Consider a fall or spring road trip for the best weather.

If you start out West

Pacific coast highway: california to washington.

guy trips in the us

Though there's some debate, the California Department of Transportation says the Pacific Coast Highway officially starts at Dana Point in Orange County and stops 150 miles later in Oxnard. However, we'd argue that the 1,650 miles from San Diego to Olympic National Park in Washington is worth driving.

Sweeping views from high above the blue-green Pacific Ocean make the PCH one of the most beautiful road trips, with a few state parks along the way. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is known for viewings of sea otters, seals and whales, while Garrapata State Park is renowned for its redwood groves. Just south of Garrapata is the most photographed icon of the PCH: Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the world's tallest single-span concrete arch bridges.

From there, the largest concentration of stops is in and around the coastal area of Big Sur . Enjoy a glass of wine, lunch or both at the European-style Nepenthe restaurant, where spectacular views of over 60 miles of coastline await patrons. Grab a quick nosh at Big Sur Bakery before pausing at the McWay Falls overlook or taking a peek at the sunset through Keyhole Arch on Pfeiffer Beach.

Just past the southern end of Big Sur is Hearst Castle, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst's 1920s-style Spanish Colonial Revival property that's open to the public.

Historic Columbia River Highway: Oregon

guy trips in the us

Dating back to 1913, the Historic Columbia River Highway was the first designated scenic highway in the U.S. This 75-mile route, beginning east of Portland, Oregon, in Troutdale and continuing on to The Dalles, can be driven in a day.

Must-see features of this stunning thoroughfare include its numerous waterfalls, such as Shepperd's Dell and the 620-foot-tall Multnomah Falls, plus scenic vistas like Chanticleer Point (one of the first overlooks you'll encounter traveling east) and Crown Point (one of the most photographed spots along the Columbia River). If time permits, stop at some of the historical landmarks along Lewis and Clark's journey, such as Rooster Rock State Park, Cascade Locks and the Rock Fort Campsite in The Dalles.

Spring through fall is the best time to visit this heavily forested area, though fall will afford you the most colorful views.

US Route 89: Through Arizona, Utah, Wyoming and Montana

guy trips in the us

Though no longer an official U.S. national park road, U.S. Route 89 (formerly known as the National Park to Park Highway) is ripe for those wishing to take the road less traveled. Start this journey in Arizona, moving through Utah and up to Wyoming until you get to Montana.

As you travel U.S. Route 89, you'll pass 150 towns, cities and reservations, as well as seven national parks (including the Grand Canyon , Glacier and Yellowstone ) and three geographic regions (Basin and Range National Monument, the Colorado Plateau and the Rocky Mountains).

While going from border to border is an option, those looking for a quicker route can consider a shorter stretch that takes you from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to Glacier National Park.

Going-to-the-Sun Road: Glacier National Park, Montana

guy trips in the us

The 53-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road is the only road through Glacier National Park. It's also one of the most narrow and winding thoroughfares on this list, rewarding travelers with some of the most epic natural landscapes in the country.

From the Jackson Glacier Overlook and the route's highest point, the 6,646-foot-tall Logan Pass, you might even spot some mountain goats. The road also runs by several lakes, including Lake McDonald and St. Mary Lake, and majestic waterfalls like McDonald Falls and Bird Woman Falls.

The road's accessibility is dependent on the amount of snow from the previous winter. It usually opens by the first of June and stays open until October. The busiest traffic times are from late June through late August.

If you start in Maine

Us route 1: maine to florida.

guy trips in the us

Beginning near the Canadian border at Fort Kent, Maine, historic U.S. Route 1 spans nearly 2,500 miles along the Atlantic coast of New England, passing through a slew of East Coast destinations — including New York City , Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. — before ending in Key West, Florida.

In New Hampshire, you'll find Colonial towns such as 400-year-old Portsmouth, a harborside locale full of charming restaurants, inns and shops. There's also Salem, Massachusetts, famous for its witch trials (and home to the Salem Witch Museum). Additionally, drivers can check out Newport, Rhode Island, which is known for historical mansions like The Breakers, the lavish summer "cottage" of Cornelius Vanderbilt II.

Farther south, U.S. Route 1's highlights include northern Virginia's Mount Vernon, the one-time home of former President George Washington, and South Carolina's more than 45,000-acre Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge.

If you're starting this route in New England , consider driving in late September or early October. You'll not only enjoy the spectacular fall colors but will also avoid worrying about getting snowed in.

Acadia All-American Road: Maine

guy trips in the us

Though you could complete the Acadia All-American Road in half a day, there's a lot to see in its 40 miles through Acadia National Park . The scenic byway starts at U.S. Route 3 just south of Trenton, crossing the bridge onto the 108-square-mile Mount Desert Island.

Highlights of the Acadia All-American Road include Bass Harbor Head Light Station, a lighthouse that dates back to the mid-1800s, and Cadillac Mountain, the park's highest point. The latter includes interconnected carriage roads and old stone bridges, most of which are closed off to cars.

To explore these areas, bring your bicycles or rent them in the island's seaside community of Bar Harbor . For food, there's nothing better than fresh seafood at Bar Harbor's Thirsty Whale Tavern.

During the summer months, the scenic byway can be very crowded. The colorful foliage of late fall (rather than earlier in the season) can offer gorgeous scenery with fewer tourists.

Bottom line

Whether you are road-tripping this summer or prefer to hit the road this fall, remember these trips. No matter which routes you choose to traverse, keep in mind that the journey isn't solely about the main highlights; the lesser-known destinations you find along the way are an equally important part of the road trip experience.

The 23 best summertime buddies trip golf destinations

GD030120_FEAT_BUDDIES_01.jpg

If you’re looking for information on some of the top golf destinations in the world to help plan your next golf trip, we’ve got you covered. Below is a ranking of the Best Summertime Buddies Destinations in the United States and overseas, as selected by Golf Digest’s Course Ranking panelists and members of our Places to Play Facebook group. In conjunction with our primer on how to plan the best summer golf trip you and your buddies will ever take and our tips on how to make the most of your buddies trip , you’ll be all set to have the time of your life at any of these great golf spots.

UNITED STATES

1. Oregon Coast

Bandon Dunes exerts a stronger gravitational pull than almost any place in golf not named St. Andrews. Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald all rank among Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Courses in America, and the Sheep Ranch, opening in June, could be the best of them all.

2. Carmel/Monterey Peninsula, Calif.

Before Bandon Dunes, the Monterey Peninsula was the king of public American destination golf. Pebble Beach is No. 7 on our list of America’s 100 Greatest. Spyglass Hill, the Links at Spanish Bay, Poppy Hills and even modest Pacific Grove highlight a deep bench that gets better with age.

3. Pinehurst / Southern Pines, N.C.

The “home of American golf” has experienced a major revitalization with upgrades to No. 2, the addition of the Cradle short course and a total reconstruction of No. 4. Mid Pines & Pine Needles, in Southern Pines, have also been masterfully reworked, and nearby Tobacco Road adds a theatrical element to the mix.

4. Kohler, Wis.

There’s plenty to explore among four resort courses spread across two sites. Whistling Straits (Straits Course) is the most raucous and typically gets top billing as a PGA Championship and Ryder Cup (2020) venue, but many visitors prefer Blackwolf Run’s quieter, more idyllic River Course.

5. Sand Valley / Green Lake, Wis.

GD030120_FEAT_BUDDIES_18.jpg

Evan Schiller

Sand Valley, the latest chapter in Mike Keiser’s destination golf opus, features three stunning options cut from sandy pine forests in central Wisconsin—the original Sand Valley course, Mammoth Dunes and the quirky Sandbox. A side-trip to the Links Course at Lawsonia, a playground of 1920s architecture, is a no-brainer.

6. San Francisco / Half Moon Bay

Public golf in San Francisco runs the gamut from modest, beloved city courses like Sharp Park and Lincoln Park to the once modest but now rebranded TPC Harding Park, site of this year’s PGA Championship. Half Moon Bay, 30 miles south, brings a more luxurious approach plus golf holes peering out to the Pacific Ocean.

7. Hilton Head Island / Savannah, Ga.

Options begin with Sea pines’ classic Low Country courses (Pete Dye’s Harbour Town and Heron Point, and the remodeled Atlantic Dunes), or Palmetto Dunes’ tour of the architectural past with courses by Robert Trent Jones (’60s), George Fazio (’70s) and Arthur Hills (’80s). May River, meanwhile, is modern and mesmerizing.

8. Sea Island, Ga.

Sea Island’s Seaside course remains one of the Southeast’s grand courses, but residents Mark and Davis Love III have been busy with classical retrofits of the resort’s Retreat and Plantation layouts (reopened in 2019). They’ve also restored Brunswick Country Club (Donald Ross, 1939) and added Sanctuary Golf Club, a Seth Raynorinspired public option.

9. Milwaukee

Buddies golf trips passing through Milwaukee are likely headed to Erin Hills, the vast, heaving site of the 2017 U.S. Open just 45 minutes northwest. They also might stop at one of the area’s strong public facilities like Brown Deer Park, where Tiger Woods played his first PGA Tour event as a professional, or The Bog, a countryside Arnold Palmer design with 118 bunkers.

Given Maui’s idyllic setting, bad places to play. Yet there’s only one must-play venue, the Plantation Course at Kapalua, recently revamped by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The Gold and Emerald courses at Wailea deserve consideration as well, as does King Kamehameha rising 750 feet above the island’s north shore.

11. San Diego / Carlsbad, Calif.

No golf trip to San Diego is complete without a visit to the city-owned North and South Courses at Torrey Pines, host of the 2021 U.S. Open. But more gold awaits in SoCal’s crinkled hills in the form of Omni La Costa Resort, Tom Fazio’s Rams Hill, and Barona Creek, reopening this summer after a comprehensive renovation.

12. Traverse City, Mich.

Traverse City is central to an abundance of fine resort golf. Arcadia Bluffs (Bluffs and South courses) is an hour southwest. Forest Dunes (Forest Dunes and The Loop, plus a new 10-hole short course) is 90 minutes east. And Boyne Highlands, with four 18-hole courses, is within a two-hour drive north.

13. Phoenix / Scottsdale

The biggest challenge facing participants on a buddies trip to the Phoenix area is how to narrow the choices, and how to fit it all in. The Valley of the Sun offers endless combinations of multi-round golf days, including We-Ko-Pa, Troon North, Grayhawk, Talking Stick, Wickenburg Ranch, TPC Scottsdale and the remodeled Papago Municipal.

14. Napa Valley, Calif.

Mornings swinging clubs at Silverado Resort, Chardonnay Golf Club, Eagle Vines or nearby Hiddenbrooke can lead to afternoons swirling wine at dozens of tasting rooms throughout Napa Valley, where the moderate climate and off-course attractions are as much of a reason to come as the golf.

A trip here can go several directions: Innisbrook Golf Resort and the famed Copperhead Course are 45 minutes north of the Tampa airport; Tom Fazio’s World Woods is another 30 minutes north, and Black Diamond Ranch is just beyond that; an hour southeast are the Red, Blue and Black at Streamsong, all among Golf Digest’s top-rated public courses.

INTERNATIONAL

1. St. Andrews, Scotland

A pilgrimage to the Home of Golf could simply consist of playing the seven courses of the St. Andrews Links Trust (the Old Course, the Castle Course, the New, etc.). However, short excursions to nearby authentic links like Crail, Elie and Lundin should be on any itinerary, and Gleneagles and Carnoustie are each about an hour’s drive away.

2. Republic of Ireland / Northern Ireland

Portrush’s popularity is soaring after the 2019 Open Championship, bookending a Northern Ireland trip opposite Golf Digest World No. 1 Royal County Down. Ballybunion, Lahinch and Waterville highlight Ireland’s southwest coast, and Carne, Enniscrone and Rosapenna await in the wild dunes of the northwest.

3. Aberdeen / Inverness, Scotland

Golf in Northeast Scotland, beginning above Inverness at Brora and Royal Dornoch, is great and wonderfully uncrowded. Castle Stuart, just south, kicks off a stellar road trip of new and old links that stretches through Nairn, south to the incomparable Cruden Bay, then onto Royal Aberdeen and its neighbor Murcar.

4. East Lothian, Scotland

North Berwick and Muirfield headline the golf-centric region surrounding Edinburgh, but other venerable links abound, including Dunbar, Kilspindie, Luffness, the three courses at Gullane, and the original nine holes inside the Musselburgh racetrack, among the oldest courses in the world.

5. Ayrshire, Scotland

Ayrshire—Scotland’s southwest coast—is home to bucket-list courses like Royal Troon, Turnberry and Prestwick, where the first 11 Open Championships were played. It can also be the launching point for more far-flung excursions out to Machrihanish, The Machrie, Shiskine and, for the most adventurous, the Outer Hebrides and Askernish.

6. Nova Scotia, Canada

It might be odd to suggest an add-on drive two and a half hours beyond the destination, but travelers to Cabot Links (home of Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs, both in Golf Digest’s World top 35, and a new short course opening this summer) would be remiss not to visit Cape Breton Highlands Links, one of the great scenic walks in golf.

7. New Zealand

Most of the golf that international groups play is located on the North Island, notably Cape Kidnappers, Kauri Cliffs, Jack Nicklaus’ Kinloch Club, Alister MacKenzie’s redesign at Titarangi and Paraparaumu Beach. While here, why not take a shot at getting on Tara Iti, the private retreat ranked Golf Digest’s second-best international course?

GD030120_FEAT_BUDDIES_04.jpg

Brian Krehbiel

8. Australia

Melbourne’s Sand Belt courses (Royal Melbourne, Kingston Heath, Metropolitan, Victoria, etc.) deserve their own special trip, but so do places like St. Andrews Beach and the National Golf Club. And other top 100 courses, including Cape Wickham and Barnbougle Dunes, are just a short plane ride away.

I've been to all 50 states. Here are the 10 I think everyone should visit at least once.

  • Over the past decade, I've traveled solo to all 50 US states and most major US national parks.
  • Although I've found beauty in every state, there are some that I want to visit over and over again.
  • I love traveling to places like New Mexico, Montana, New Hampshire, and Arizona.

Insider Today

Over the past decade, I've successfully visited all 50 US states solo. I've even made it to most of the major US national parks along the way. Because of this journey, I'm often asked which states I'd recommend to travelers.

Although most international travelers gravitate toward states like Florida and New York , I've found fantastic beauty and history in every state.

However, these are the 10 states I always return to.

New Mexico boasts a surprising variety of stunning landscapes.

guy trips in the us

New Mexico is always at the top of my list when recommending US states. Nicknamed " the land of enchantment ," it lives up to its moniker — and then some.

Those who haven't visited New Mexico may think of the state as a mostly barren desert, but it's actually the diverse landscapes that keep me coming back.

From the otherworldly dunes of White Sands National Park to the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains, there's beauty to be found around every corner.

Outside the natural beauty, the state is chock full of history, art, food, wine, and culture.

Montana is a must-visit state for any outdoor enthusiast.

guy trips in the us

With its vast open spaces, majestic mountains, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, Montana is a must-visit state for any outdoor enthusiast.

The state is home to the breathtaking Glacier National Park and parts of Yellowstone National Park . The sky is vast and open, the mountains are towering, and the lack of development makes me feel like I'm entering another world entirely.

California is full of diverse landscapes and experiences.

guy trips in the us

Every time I visit California , I feel like I'm entering a completely different reality.

The sheer size and diversity of the state are impressive, and it has gorgeous beaches, cities, forests, deserts, mountains, and even volcanoes.

I love road-tripping up the coast, visiting Yosemite National Park, taking a boat to the Channel Islands, and wine tasting in places like Napa and Sonoma.

There's no place quite like the Maine coast.

guy trips in the us

There's so much to love about Maine, but my favorite part of the state is the coast. With jagged and dramatic cliffs, lighthouses, and lobster shacks, visiting the Maine coast is an unforgettable experience.

It's easy to find peace in the state that sees the first sunrise of the year and is home to Acadia National Park, which is one of the country's most popular national parks.

I love to road trip up the coast, stopping in beautiful towns like Kennebunkport, Bar Harbour, and Lubec.

I've returned to West Virginia multiple times.

guy trips in the us

While it may not get as much attention as some of the other states on this list, I've returned to West Virginia multiple times since my first visit.

The state's natural beauty is stunning, from New River Gorge National Park to ample lush forests, underground caverns, historic small towns, and over 200 waterfalls .

Wisconsin is home to beautiful scenery and great dining options.

guy trips in the us

Wisconsin has so much more than first meets the eye, from the natural beauty of the Apostle Islands and the 15,000 lakes in the state to the classic cheese curds, breweries, and wineries that dot the landscape.

I love spending time along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, dining at one of the state's famous supper clubs, and exploring the many Wisconsin state parks.

As my home state, Colorado will always hold a special place in my heart.

guy trips in the us

I couldn't write a list like this without including my home state of Colorado. The state has so much to offer, from beautiful views to fun activities.

On the Front Range, I enjoy hiking in Boulder and exploring Cheyenne Cañon. I like to spend the night at the The Broadmoor hotel in Colorado Springs before heading over to Great Sand Dunes National Park.

In the Rockies, I love driving Independence Pass to Aspen, as well as exploring the underrated Grand Mesa, which is the biggest flat-top mountain in the world . I also enjoy taking road trips to the charming mountain towns of Telluride, Buena Vista, and Steamboat Springs.

No matter where you find yourself in Colorado, there's no shortage of incredible natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

Utah is home to five major national parks.

guy trips in the us

Utah is a state that you have to see to believe. With five major national parks, 46 state parks, 15 ski resorts, and hidden gems at every turn — you'll never get bored here.

I love visiting Moab to hike in Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Dead Horse Point State Park before heading south to Bryce Canyon National Park, Kodachrome Basin State Park, and Zion National Park .

I also love making stops in Park City and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

New Hampshire boasts some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast.

guy trips in the us

The Northeast is famous for fall foliage, but I can't help but think that New Hampshire is sometimes overshadowed by its neighbors, Maine and Vermont.

I was stunned by its natural beauty during my first trip to the state. From the White Mountains to Franconia Notch State Park, the state boasts some of the best skiing and hiking in the Northeast.

Arizona is the perfect escape for adventure and relaxation.

guy trips in the us

Arizona is well known for the Grand Canyon, but the state has much more to offer. From Flagstaff's high-altitude forests to Sedona's iconic red rocks, Arizona's diversity is surprising and worth a trip.

I love hiking among the cacti in Sedona or Scottsdale before heading to one of the many resorts to jump in a pool or hit the spa — the perfect escape for adventure and relaxation.

Video of deadly fight that led to Apple River stabbing shown during opening arguments of Nicolae Miu trial

By Stephen Swanson , Jonah Kaplan , Riley Moser

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 7:25 AM CDT / CBS Minnesota

HUDSON, Wis. — Investigators say video from July 2022 shows  Nicolae Miu  being pushed and hit by a group of tubers on the river before he stabbed five people, killing 17-year-old  Isaac Schuman . The victims ranged in age from 17 to 24 and were from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Follow day 5 of the trial here

The trial for a 54-year-old Prior Lake man accused of killing a teen and stabbing four others on the Apple River in Wisconsin nearly two years ago began on Monday.

Witnesses said Miu was initially in the river with goggles and a snorkel. A group of tubers accused of him of looking at young girls underwater, but Miu told investigators he was looking for a friend's missing cellphone.

RELATED:  Man charged with stabbing tubers in Wisconsin says he's hired one of Kyle Rittenhouse's attorneys

The prosecution argues that Miu was the aggressor by stabbing five people. A knife, believed to belong to Miu, was later recovered by officers on the river bank.

Miu's defense attorneys, though, see it much differently, saying the teens taunted him, then surrounded him, and Miu was fighting for his life.

He is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in Schuman's death, and attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the stabbings of Ryhley Mattison, A.J. Martin, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson. He pleaded not guilty to all charges in September 2022.

If convicted, Miu could be sentenced to life in prison.

Opening statements

The prosecution

The trial began with the opening statement from state prosecutor Karl Anderson, who called the deadly attack "senseless and horrific."

"All Nicolae had to do was walk away," Anderson said. "He eventually did walk away, but not after stabbing five people."

miu-trial-mius-tubing-group.jpg

Anderson showed several screenshots from two videos taken by one of the members of Schuman's group, identified as Jawahn C.

Anderson said a member of Miu's group named Ariel dropped his cellphone in the river. Ariel said it wasn't that big of a deal because he had insurance, but Miu insisted on trying to retrieve it.

Miu approached Schuman's group. In the first video, approximately nine seconds in length, Jawahn C. is heard yelling "(Miu) says he's looking for little girls!"

miu-trial-miu-with-his-snorkeling-gear.jpg

In the second video, Miu is shown running towards Schuman's group.

A group of adult tubers, identified as the Carlson group, then came over to intervene. The Schuman group is heard cheering when they arrive.

While showing several screenshots from the second video, which is almost 3 minutes and 30 seconds long, Anderson underlined that audio in the video indicates Miu was asked more than 20 times by the Schuman and Carlson groups to go away.

In the several screenshots, Anderson noted that before the physical confrontations begin, Miu appeared to be "smirking" while holding his knife low by his side. Anderson also stated that at no point did Miu speak or tell anyone to get back, and he didn't step back or walk away from the groups.

miu-trial-miu-with-schuman-group.jpg

Anderson said the first time the confrontation turned physical was when Miu punched a member of the Carlson group named Madison. Another member of the group, Dante Carlson, then punched Miu, causing him to fall into the shallow river.

Anderson said in a 25-second span, Miu then stabbed four members of the Carlson group: A.J. Martin, Ryhley Mattison, Dante Carlson and Tony Carlson. Miu also fatally stabbed Schuman, who suffered wounds to his torso, chest and heart.

"You don't see anyone besides Nicolai with a weapon. You don't see the boys touch Nicolai until after stabbings start," Anderson said.

Anderson said no one in either group was initially aware that Miu was stabbing people until they saw Martin in the water, who had been disemboweled. Anderson also pointed out that Miu had his knife's blade pointed upwards in the attacks.

miu-trial-miu-surrounded-by-groups-before-attack.jpg

Afterward, Anderson said Miu walked back to his tubing group and told them "they took his knife." Several members of Miu's group called 911 to say several people were hurt, but they said they didn't know what happened. His group stayed at a sandbar until law enforcement arrived. One member of his group also helped some of the victims before speaking with police.

Anderson said Jawahn C. took a screenshot of Miu from the video and gave it to law enforcement, who quickly disseminated it. Employees then spotted Miu and alerted deputies, who then took Miu — who was then clothed and wearing a hat and sunglasses — into custody. Anderson said members of Miu's group protested his arrest, saying they "had the wrong guy."

Anderson said when Miu was in the back of a squad car at the scene, he allegedly said to the sheriff, "What's going on? I hear somebody got stabbed and I fit the description." Miu was then told he was under arrest for homicide and attempted murder.

miu-trial-carlson-group-argues-with-miu.jpg

When he was interviewed later by law enforcement, Anderson said Miu was surprised to find there was video of the attacks. He told investigators he didn't have a knife, but members of Schuman's group were armed with knives. Miu allegedly said they knocked off his goggles and snorkel and threw them in the water and they tried to pull his pants down.

"I just grabbed the kid's knife. I didn't even know if I was holding it right. I just grabbed it from him because he tried to poke me with it, so, I feared for my life," Miu said, according to a transcript shown in a slide by Anderson.

miu-trial-mius-knife-found-on-riverbank.jpg

Anderson said Miu went on to tell investigators that he didn't know where the knife was that he used to defend himself with, but later a member from Miu's group told investigators they saw him "throw something onto shore before walking back to their group."

Anderson said when investigators told him four people were hurt and one died, Miu allegedly said, "Was that because they fought each other?"

Investigators later recovered Miu's knife on a river bank, and it tested positive for DNA from some of the victims.

The defense

Defense attorney Aaron Nelson's opening statement repeatedly hammered home that Miu stabbed the other tubers in self-defense because he feared for his life.

Nelson began his statements with biographical details on Miu, who grew up in Romania and immigrated to the U.S. as a teen. He said Miu speaks several languages and described him as an "intelligent" and "peaceful" man.

He also emphasized that Miu was an "unfit 260-pound man" who had undergone a quadruple bypass surgery two years before the deadly encounter.

miu-trial-miu-seen-holding-knife.jpg

Nelson said Miu only brought his knife at the request of a friend so they could use it to cut the twine needed to connect the group's tubes before they coasted down the river. He said Miu likes to snorkel and brought his equipment, eventually using it to find his friend's phone.

Nelson described Schuman's group as "drunk teens" who were "smoking stuff." He also said Schuman's autopsy results revealed he had a blood alcohol level of .219, and his friends later told investigators Schuman was the most sober one in their group that day.

Nelson said the group began to "heckle" and "humiliate" Miu based on his appearance and loudly accused him of being a "raper" who was "looking for little girls." Nelson also pointed out that there were no "little girls" near the groups during the altercation.

miu-trial-schuman-group-celebrates-when-miu-is-pushed-down.jpg

He said Miu began to run towards Schuman's group because he saw one of them hold up what he believed to be the cellphone he was searching for, and dropped his goggles and snorkel into the river in the process.

Nelson accused Schuman's group of then threatening Miu with physical harm.

"'You got 10 seconds,' that's what that group of drunk teenagers says to that old man," Nelson said.

He said Miu then began to walk towards the Carlson group to appeal to them, but the group was immediately hostile. Nelson said an older member of the Carlson group, Quentin Carlson, later told investigators that he sent his sons Tony and Dante over to Miu and the Schuman group because he worried "the old guy" was going to get hurt.

miu-trial-miu-sitting-in-the-river.jpg

Nelson said Carlson's group was swayed by the Schuman group's claims that Miu was a "predator" looking for "little girls," and Miu was then soon surrounded.

"They got a crowd. They told lies to make the crowd angry," Nelson said. "Nick Miu standing in the river with 13 strangers. Thirteen drunk, angry strangers. Thirteen against one. They yelled and they screamed in order to attract a crowd."

Nelson said there were inconsistencies between the parties involved in their respective interviews over whether Miu punched, slapped or pushed a member of Carlson's party named Madison, which led to Miu being knocked into the river by Dante Carlson.

miu-trial-miu-walks-away-as-aj-martin-collapses-into-river.jpg

"When he tries to get up out of the water, they attack him in the front, smack him across the front of the face while somebody comes from behind and starts pushing him down. And that moment he feared for his life and he responded with self-defense," Nelson said.

He said Miu then began to make "quick, short jab motions" with his knife towards the mob.

"When people attacked Miu, he responded," Nelson said.

miu-trial-defense-image-of-schuman-allegedly-strangling-miu.jpg

Nelson then showed three images of what appeared to be Schuman strangling Miu, which he said caused Miu to fall backward and fatally stab Schuman by accident.

"I'm sure (Schuman) was a wonderful man, wonderful human being. We're going to hear a lot about him, but in this moment, on this day, on that river, when he was drunk, he tried to strangle Nick Miu," Nelson said.

Nelson said after the stabbings, Miu tossed the knife because he was "suffering from shock and trauma."

The first witness

Ryan Nelson was the first witness called by the prosecution.

Nelson said he was positive that Miu started the fight when he hit Madison.

"It looked like he struck her definitively with his right hand," Nelson said.

During an intense cross-examination, defense attorneys challenged Nelson's memory of events.

The trial continues on Tuesday at St. Croix County Courthouse in Hudson, Wisconsin.

In early January 2024, the website  Esspots published an article claiming that celebrity chef Guy Fieri kicked Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks out of one of his restaurants:

"He's Ungodly and Woke": Guy Fieri Throws Tom Hanks Out Of His Restaurant In what can only be described as a scene straight out of a surreal comedy sketch, Guy Fieri, the spiky-haired maestro of Flavortown, reportedly ejected none other than America's beloved actor, Tom Hanks, from one of his diners. The reason? Fieri branded Hanks as "ungodly and woke." Let's take a flavorful dive into this bizarre gastronomic tussle that's cooking up a storm.

The story was recirculated on Facebook , with some commentators posting their support for the Food Network favorite. " Thank you for recognizing 'this type'....& doing something positive," wrote one, while another responded, "I always had some Bad feelings about Hanks ! But after Apollo 13 I thought maybe I was wrong, evidently I should trust my feelings !"

( SpaceX Fanclub /Facebook)

However, this item was not a factual recounting of real-life events. The article originated with a website that describes its output as being humorous or satirical in nature, and the author admitted that the scenario was completely fabricated at the end of the article:

The fictional ejection of Tom Hanks from Guy Fieri's restaurant over accusations of being "ungodly and woke" is a humorous and exaggerated portrayal of the cultural divides and absurdities that can exist in our society. It's a tale that serves up a generous helping of satire, seasoned with a pinch of irony and a dash of absurdity, reminding us to take a step back and enjoy the lighter side of life's unexpected moments.

A similar story appeared on  SpaceXMania : " The atmosphere shifted when Fieri approached Hanks' table. Instead of exchanging pleasantries, Guy Fieri began a passionate monologue, criticizing what he saw as the actor's 'ungodly wokeness' and his involvement in various social and political causes."

SpaceXMania's website disclaimer also labels its work as satirical:

Our mission? To bring you the freshest fake news, some sassy analysis, and a good dose of satire, all rolled into one crazy concoction that orbits around Elon Musk and everything that's lighting up the viral/trending charts.

Both stories contained clues that the alleged incident hadn't actually happened. For example, w hile it  was said to have taken place at one of Fieri's unidentified restaurants, the establishment's location was not revealed in either story. Fieri has "about 90 restaurants," according to a Variety article published in late 2022.

Esspots wrote that the hashtag #FlavortownFiasco trended as the news of the alleged incident spread. However, a search revealed no such hashtag in use on any social media platforms.

Additionally, no credible sources reported on Fieri ejecting Hanks from his restaurant, which would have occurred had the incident actually happened .

Hanks is among several high-profile celebrities targeted by false claims allegedly connecting them to  rumors  of  pedophilia . The claims are a part of the large web of  QAnon conspiracy theories , which have been circulating since at least 2016.

Snopes has previously written about other satirical news involving Fieri, including one about the chef  ejecting soccer star Megan Rapinoe from one of his restaurants, and another about banning Whoopi Goldberg .

For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.

‘Just try to be in the moment’: Bill Nye shares eclipse insights & tips ahead of his trip to Texas

Share this story with a friend:.

guy trips in the us

F. Scott Schafer

Bill Nye is coming to Texas.

The Science Guy, known for his popular show during the 90s , will be at the Planetary Society’s  Eclipse-O-Rama in Fredericksburg during the total solar eclipse on April 8.

The science educator, comedian and best-selling author joined the Texas Standard to talk about the total eclipse , climate change and even his outfits. Listen to the interview above or read transcript below.

This transcript has been edited lightly for clarity:

Texas Standard: Well, I imagine this will not be your first total solar eclipse. Can you tell us about any experiences that stick in your memory?

Bill Nye: I was in Nebraska in 2017, which wasn’t that long ago, and it was spectacular. I was in South Africa for an eclipse, where it was very cloudy up to the last moment, and it’s still cool – but it’s way cooler when there are no clouds .

So everybody, if you’ve not seen a total solar eclipse, I cannot say enough good things. “Well, what if I see the partial eclipse? What if I decide I’ll just stay in Tulsa or Brownsville or something?” Take your time, take the day, whatever it is, and drive an hour, an hour and a half and get under the path of totality. Because it is amazing.

You know, we had the Ring of Fire cross over a big swath of Texas, too, and it’s amazing how much it didn’t get dark.

Exactly. The ring of fire was the annular eclipse; annulus means “ring” in Latin. So, that was because you had a ring around the moon, a very bright sunlight, because the moon’s orbit isn’t quite round; it’s elliptical.

And so to get a total solar eclipse, you have to have the convergence of the moon passing between you and the sun. You have to be somewhere on the Earth’s surface where that’s happening, and then the moon has to be in the part of its orbit where it’s closer to Earth. It’s a difference of like 40,000 kilometers, which in outer space isn’t much, but it’s a lot.

We don’t know of any other planet in the solar system or in the cosmos where the moon blocks – and there’s just a fabulous geometry word, subtends – the moon subtends the same width of sky as the sun.

Most places that we can tell, all the moons are much smaller and they don’t block the sun out this way. So Earth is amazing in that way. So what’ll happen? You guys have heard the story. The birds will chirp, the crickets will tweet – or they’ll crick, whatever they do.

» MORE: Like ‘some invisible force is taking a bite out of the sun’: What to expect on eclipse day in Texas

And then, the other strange and amazing thing: So you have the eclipse glasses on to the last moment you’re watching … and then the world goes dark.   You can take your eclipse glasses off, look around, listen to the sounds, and there’ll be a breeze because the ground gets cooled off so fast that the cool air will squeeze the warm air up and you’ll get a little bit of a breeze, and just for those four minutes; it’s amazing.

So, it’s an exciting time. The next one, you guys, isn’t till 2044. So I hope to be around for that one; I’m of a certain age, who knows? Total solar eclipses happen all the time, every year and a half or so. But what makes this one important is it’s happening over a place where we live.

You know, there are people who just get on ships – most solar eclipses occur in the middle of the ocean because most of the Earth is covered with water – and they chase the eclipses, and it’s big fun. There are people who get in airplanes and chase them around, and that’s cool.

But, what’s really great is when you have this shared experience out there with thousands of your fellow citizens soaking up the dark.

You mentioned the eclipse glasses. I feel like those are easy to get right now – they’re at the grocery store; you can order them online.  Now, if for some reason somebody doesn’t have their eclipse glasses, they can go to planetary.org  and also make a like a pinhole viewer.

A pinhole viewer is very cool. If you’ve never made one, there’s not much to it: Get a small hole. And what I’ve had great success with is something akin to a shoe box or a bigger cardboard box and cut a hole in one end, as big as – pick a number: a ping pong ball; as big as your circle of your thumb and index finger – and then tape a piece of aluminum foil over that opening, and then take a pin and make a tiny hole.

The thing that degrade the experience with cardboard is the thickness of the cardboard. So if you can put a piece of aluminum foil, it’s a classic. It’s so thin, you can make such a tiny perfect hole. And it’s just the nature of the wave, nature of light, everybody. When an image about a half a degree wide, which is what the sun and the moon are, comes through this pinhole, it makes a silhouette of what you’re seeing, like a perfect or very good silhouette.

And the longer the distance from your pinhole to whatever you’re going to look at at the other end of the shoe box, the other end of your refrigerator box, then the image will be bigger. But the pinhole is quite cool .

So it’s worth doing even if you have the even if you have the glasses, you think?

It’s something to try. The other thing – which I’ve done once, and it’s okay for a moment – you take your fingers and interlace them, and you end up making a half dozen pinholes, and you can have it projected on the ground. If you have a nice white piece of paper on the ground, then you go, “wow, look at that. The moon is covering up the sun.”

But that moment when it goes totally dark, pinhole shminhole: Just enjoy those four minutes.

My advice to everybody: We all nowadays, everywhere I go, “Can I take a selfie? Can I take a selfie? Can I take a selfie?” I know you all want to take pictures, but just try to be in the moment. Just be there, remember the moment, remember what you were doing on April 8th about 1:30 in the afternoon in Hill Country of Texas. It’s just an extraordinary experience.

And you just think what ancient peoples must have thought. They must have thought the world was ending or the sky is falling or one of these things, and it’s not. It’s this remarkable phenomenon that’s available to us as Earthlings. For most of us, it’s a once in a lifetime; for many of us, it’s a couple or three in our lifetime. And it’s so convenient in that it’s coming right over civilization, interstate highways going all over the place.

Now if folks join you out at Eclipse-O-Rama in Fredericksburg, I’m sure you guys will also have, what, like fancy telescopes and things with lenses?

We’re going to have star parties; we’re going to watch some original “Cosmos” episodes. You know, the shared experience is wonderful. That’s why people go to theaters, is for the shared experience.

This eclipse is an opportunity on an international scale – you know, 40 million people are just living in the path. And if people take that little bit of trouble to drive north, south, east or west to get in the path for real, more than 200 million people will be able to see it, and that’s really something.

Do you have a special outfit planned? A good bow tie?

Oh my God, yes I do. Yes, I have a special outfit – not that special – but I’m going to wear a bow tie. And, just some disclosure everybody, I’m also going to wear a shirt.

Okay, and pants I hope.

Yeah, well, I don’t want to scare people.

It is a cool thing. So if you come with us to Fredericksburg with the Planetary Society – the Planetary Society was started by Carl Sagan and Bruce Murray, the head of the Jet Propulsion Lab, back in 1980. They wanted people to get excited about space.

I always like to remind people, science is part of what made the United States what it is. The word “science” is in the U.S. Constitution: Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 charges Congress with “supporting the progress of science and useful arts.” It’s very cool. So it’s exciting.

I’ve got to say, it’s been interesting: You’ve made some headlines lately talking about climate change. I t’s not new for anybody to talk about climate change. Why do you think it makes headlines when you do?

Well, okay. People ask me to speak about it. And everybody, look, my fellow Texans: I used to work in the oil patch. I used to work in Victoria, Snyder, Big Spring, Refugio – one of the towns that claims it’s where Nolan Ryan was born; I don’t know which one it really was.

So I used to work in the oil field. But we can’t do that anymore. We can’t burn fossil fuels anymore. We have to stop. The science of this is overwhelming. We can do this – this is the United States. We can get together and solve this enormous problem.

Yes, we got a long way by burning ancient swamps in the Permian Basin. Yes, those were the days. But we can’t do it anymore; we got to move on. So the sooner we get to work, the better.

And for me, this total solar eclipse is part of the celebration of the process of science and our understanding the cosmos and our place within it. And I’m not kidding, it’s an exciting time
