Barcelona port facilities & location.

The Port of Barcelona is a popular departure port for Mediterranean cruises and is a little less than an hour’s walk away from the center of the city. You can also take a bus shuttle service that runs between the port terminal and the famous Christopher Columbus monument that welcomes visitors at one of the ends of Las Ramblas. Another option is to travel by taxi, which will get you downtown in about 20 minutes.

Top Sights & Landmarks to See Before Cruises From Barcelona

La sagrada famĂlia.

Barcelona’s most iconic monument and an absolute must-see for any visitor is the world-renowned La Sagrada Familia, envisioned and created by the famous architect, Antoni Gaudi. As a religious man, Gaudi devoted a large part of his life to this majestic, towering cathedral and unfortunately died before its completion. The sheer size of its majestic towers and the immaculate detail displayed on every square inch of the cathedral and basilica—both indoors and outdoors—is unparalleled. La Sagrada Familia was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, and Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the basilica in November of 2010.

Santa Maria del Mar Basilica

The Santa Maria del Mar Basilica might seem simple when compared to La Sagrada Familia, but this Gothic cathedral is equally as stunning. It is the only surviving church in the pure Catalan Gothic style and is notable because of its intricate stained-glass windows and unifying proportions. While most churches took centuries to build, Santa Maria del Mar was completed in only 55 years, from 1329 to 1383. Known as the “People’s Church,” the basilica has suffered through extensive damage twice: First during the 1428 earthquake and later in 1936, when rioters burned parts of its facade for 11 days straight during the Spanish Civil War. After both instances, the cathedral was rebuilt to its former state.

Casa MilĂ  (Pedrera)

In 1905, Pere Mila and his wife, Roser Segimon, purchased a plot of land measuring over 1,800 square meters and commissioned Gaudi to build a new property for them. This gigantic structure—often the ridicule of their peers and contemporaries—became their home with attached apartments that the couple would rent for profit. Casa Mila became known as La Pedrera (“the stone quarry”) because its façade seemed nothing like a mansion, but more of a strange stone monstrosity to locals. Casa Mila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Casa BatllĂł

In 1904, Josep BatllĂł commissioned Gaudi to build this stunning, dreamlike structure. The tiny details will astound you, and the surprising dragon-shaped roof makes Casa BatllĂł impossible to miss during your visit to Barcelona. The imaginative design was inspired by both the ocean waves and dragons, and stands out even among the ornately-decorated homes that line the Passeig de Gracia. Tour the grounds using an interactive video guide that accompanies your audio tour, showing you in virtual reality form what the different spaces looked like long ago.

Learn More About Barcelona Shore Excursions

Top things to do in barcelona, spain, shop along las ramblas.

The famous pedestrian walkway known as Las Ramblas is nearly a mile long and is one of the city’s major thoroughfares, leading from just across from the Barcelona cruise terminal port to Plaza de Catalunya in the center of old Barcelona. As you stroll, you’ll pass restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, street performers, street food vendors, and a famous food market called Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria (or simply “la Boqueria”). If you stroll the entire length of Las Ramblas, you’ll end up in Plaza de Catalunya, an enormous square with fountains, a small park, and plenty of photo-worthy sights.

Visit Barcelona’s Sport Stadiums

Every sports enthusiast will be thrilled to visit the city of Barcelona for its many sports stadiums, whether you’re exploring before or after a cruise from Barcelona. The Olympic Stadium was actually built before the Olympics existed, but it was remodeled for the event held in Barcelona in 1992. Soccer fans can visit Camp Nou Stadium, home of FC Barcelona (or “Barca” as the locals call them). Camp Nou holds nearly 99,000 fans and is Europe’s largest stadium. Go on a tour of the stadium and see everything from the team’s changing rooms to the tunnel, the press area, and more.

Explore Park GĂŒell

Park GĂŒell is yet another stunning representation of Gaudi’s unique design and vision. In 1900, a rich count purchased a massive plot of land and designated it to be a ‘garden city’ for the city’s wealthiest patrons. Gaudi’s design of the park and homes inside the garden city proved to be too elaborate for their time, and the project was unfortunately abandoned in 1914. The two houses and park grounds make up a magical place that will sweep you away as it showcases some of Barcelona’s famous sights and symbols.

Walk Around Barceloneta

Once a quaint fishing village, this highly sought-after area is now an adorable beachfront neighborhood with brightly colored houses and a charming beach that faces the Mediterranean Sea. If you continue to follow the waterfront, you eventually reach Port Olimpic with its bars, cafes, and small shops. Stop in the Casino de Barcelona to try your luck or enjoy a floor show.

Stroll Through Barcelona's Gothic Quarter

One of the most well-known districts in all of Europe is Barcelona’s well-defined and fascinatingly unique Barri Gotic , or “Gothic Quarter.” Mystical and strange, yet beautiful and cleverly unique, the architecture of Barcelona’s stunning Gothic Quarter is a must-visit highlight. The 13th-century architecture that defines this area has a mystical old Europe feel, and the streets are winding and narrow, like corridors running through the city. While visiting the Gothic Quarter, be sure to spend some time in El Born, the trendier neighborhood known for its hip galleries, shops, restaurants, bars, and small cafes.

Where can I eat in Barcelona?

You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, cafes, and street food vendors along Las Ramblas. However, if you prefer to taste the truly authentic Catalan and Spanish-style cuisine on your Barcelona cruise, it is worth taking a stroll down the backstreets to discover the hidden culinary gems of this city.

Boqueria Food Market

More than just a fresh produce market, this world-renowned attraction plays host to many bar-style restaurants serving freshly prepared local cuisine in a lively setting.

Owned by Pep, one of the friendliest locals you’ll meet, Cal Pep is one of Barcelona’s best-known spots for tapas.

Can Culleretes

Local specialty dishes are the main draw of Can Culleretes, one of the oldest restaurants in Barcelona.

Los Caracoles

Famous for its caracoles (snails), Los Caracoles is another of the oldest restaurants in Barcelona, and it is also unique for its outside stone rotisserie.

What’s the culture & history of Barcelona?

There are two legends that describe the story of Barcelona’s founding—one attributing the city’s foundation to the mythological demi-god Hercules, and the other that states that Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal’s father, founded the city in the 3rd century BC and named it Barcino after his family’s lineage. Barcelona was conquered and inhabited by the Visigoths in the early 5th century, transforming it into the capital of all Hispania for a few years. Barcelona became a hub for Catalan Separatism during the Catalan Revolt of 1640 to 1652 against Philip IV of Spain. During the Spanish Civil War, Barcelona continued to thrive as the second-largest city in Spain in the center of a region that remained relatively prosperous.

In recent history, the Summer Olympics came to Barcelona in 1992. To prepare for the games and the massive crowds that would accompany them, many industrial buildings and businesses that lined the waterfront in Barcelona were demolished to make room for a two-mile beach for tourists to enjoy. New construction projects popped up all around the city, resulting in more beaches, parks, and nature-centered areas. All these changes and improvements to city life transformed Barcelona into one of the most-visited cities in the world.

Where can I go shopping near the Barcelona cruise port?

The street stalls, vendors, and small shops that line Las Ramblas are an excellent place to find inexpensive souvenirs, such as FC Barcelona football memorabilia, small trinkets, leather bags and shoes, as well as hand-crafted ceramics and lacework made by local artists.

How can I get around Barcelona?

Barcelona is a pedestrian-friendly city with plenty of public transportation options. From the Port Terminal, there is a shuttle bus service that will drop you off directly in Las Ramblas. If you’re looking to explore Barcelona in a short amount of time, you can board one of the hop-on, hop-off tour buses that visit major landmarks and popular tourist destinations. If you prefer to explore the city on your own, you can also use any of the bus routes, metro lines, or taxis found all over the city.

What are the local currency & tipping customs?

In Barcelona, the currency is the euro. You won’t have any trouble finding ATMs throughout the city, especially in heavily populated areas like Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter. Should you need currency exchange services, you will find these in the airport, most major banks, and in currency exchange offices on Las Ramblas. The exchange offices are typically open for later hours than banks, but you will receive a better exchange rate at most banks. Tipping in Barcelona is not expected, but if you do feel inclined to do so, leave anything from 5% to 10% as a token of appreciation for great service.

Cruises from/to Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona, spain cruise port.

Barcelona is a vibrant city located along the Mediterranean coast. For years it was overlooked, but since hosting the Summer Olympics in 1992 Barcelona has been growing in popularity and its economy and people are thriving. With this growing popularity come even more options for cruises to Barcelona. The city is perhaps most known for its fascinating architecture, especially the buildings in the Gothic Quarter. Barcelona is based in Catalonia and therefore many of its residents speak Catalan. The Catalan culture is different from most of Spain and this is most evident in the food. Tapas aren’t as popular here, but pork and Serrano ham is almost always on the menu. Contact one of our cruise experts for help planning a cruise to Barcelona, Spain. Featured below are a few of our favorite experiences for the cruise port of Barcelona, Spain:

  • The crowning jewel of Barcelona is La Sagrada Familia Church, which was designed by Antoni Gaudi and is scheduled to be completed in 2026. Gaudi himself is buried on the premises.
  • Discover the abstract and unconventional art of Joan Miro in a museum dedicated to his work. The museum was built by the artist’s friend, who also designed his workspace in Mallorca.
  • Get out of the city and visit Montserrat, the mountain range that looks over the city, and enjoy an incredible hike through scenic paths.
  • Casa Batllo is another of Gaudi’s most impressive works. This is a house that resembles the skeleton of a dragon. The whimsical building is an awe-inspiring sight.
  • Hit the beach and enjoy one of the chiringuitos, the ever-popular beach bars lining the shores, where you can listen to music and have a snack to break up your tanning or swimming.

Information to the passenger

The port of barcelona and its cruise terminals, starting point.

In collaboration with companies specialised in the cruise sector and with all the institutions involved, the Port of Barcelona can accommodate more than three million cruise passengers each year through its seven international terminals. For this, it has the best infrastructures, security measures, means of transport, qualified personnel and services, so that passengers have everything they need from the start of their cruise until their return.

A shuttle bus that connects the Adosado dock with the Barcelona dock, security controls, baggage service, parking, duty-free shops, large check-in spaces... These are some of the facilities that the Port of Barcelona makes available to all passengers embarking or disembarking from a cruise at its terminals.

The Cruise Terminals in Barcelona (Spain) Port: Review (2023)

Panoramic photo of the cruise port in Baercelona

Where ships dock in Barcelona cruise port and what's at the cruise terminals: home port or port of call; Moll Adossat terminals and World Trade Center terminal.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: June 3, 2023

Barcelona is a major port in the west Mediterranean cruise itineraries both as a Home Port and a Port of Call.

This means that as a Home Port cruise ships will start and/or end a cruise in Barcelona, where embarkation and disembarkation will take place.

But many cruise ships visit the port of Barcelona for one day as any other port within a regular itinerary. Depending on the size of the cruise ship, there are two distinct docking spots in Barcelona: the Moll Adossat cruise terminal and the WTC terminal.

Home Port and Port of Call

However, there are very few cruises that dock in Barcelona as a port of call as it really is a European major embarkation port. Passengers on a cruise calling at Barcelona for a day will have the opportunity to explore this charming city either on tours booked onboard or on their own.

Barcelona is one of the easiest European cruise ports to get around - both cruise ports are minutes away from all major attractions - and there are quite a few affordable ways to enjoy the city.

Although Barcelona is a major embarkation-disembarkation port in Europe, most cruise travelers are not well advised when booking a cruise. Travelers flying from the USA or Canada, in particular, do not realize that a long red-eye flight (over 8 hours) coupled with jet lag (5 to 8 hours earlier) is the worst possible way to start a cruise.

Hence, the Editor's strong recommendation: any traveler embarking in Barcelona should fly at least one day ahead of the start of the cruise. If possible, fly two or more days ahead of the cruise , so that you can adapt to a new time zone (if flying from North America) and enjoy one of Europe's most interesting cruise ports. Naturally, if your cruise ends in Barcelona, you should plan to stay in Barcelona for at least a couple of days.

Docking in Barcelona

Barcelona's two cruise ports (WTC Port and Moll Adossat) are ideally located to explore the city. The WTC Port has 3 piers around the World Trade Center building, it is located just under 1/2 a mile (700 meters) from the Plaça Colon and the start of La Rambla, but only small cruise ships can dock here.

Photo of WTC Port in Barcelona.

WTC Port in Barcelona

World Trade Center Port & Terminal

This port has obviously the best location as it is within walking distance to La Rambla and it is a delight for travelers on cruise lines like Seabourn, Silversea, Regent, Azamara, or the small ships of Oceania. Because no more than 3 ships can dock at the WTC Port do not have it for granted that these high-end cruise ships will always dock within walking distance to a good number of Barcelona's attractions. It happens quite frequently that small cruise ships will have to dock at the Moll Adossat.

Docking at the Moll Adossat

The major port of Barcelona is, in fact, the Moll Adossat and where the overwhelming majority of cruise ships dock. Although this port is only 2 miles (3km) from Plaça Colon , walking with (or without) luggage is quite a stretch, particularly in the heat of the summer as pedestrians will have to go over a bridge.

Photo of Moll Adossat in Barcelona.

Moll Adossat, Barcelona

Considering that the already mentioned T3 Port Bus provides such a good service it doesn't make any sense to walk to or from the Moll Adossat. The port has four Terminals (A, B, C, and D) all very large, modern, well kept, and efficient for both embarkation and disembarkation.

Photo of Terminal B, Moll Adossat, in Barcelona.

Terminal B, Moll Adossat

Amenities and Services

All sorts of amenities will be found at the Terminals including large sitting areas with AC, shopping, cafeterias, money exchange , and, of course, plenty of taxis available if disembarking. Because Barcelona is not used frequently as a port of call, you will not find Tourist Information Kiosks at the Terminals although you may find a desk with maps and touristic brochures.

Terminal B, Interior, Moll Adossat

The good news is that there is one of many Tourist Information points in Barcelona at Plaça Colon (aka Plaça Portal de la Pau), inside the Columbus Monument and also along the Rambla. Click here to find all Tourist information points in Barcelona.

How to get around in Barcelona

Unless your ship is docking at the World Trade Center as a port of call, it is useful to know that the Port has excellent transportation services both public and private to move around to the city or to the airport.

Taxis and Luggage Services between Port and Airport

If you have already booked your cruise and flights, there are a few insider tips to keep in mind. To start with, the cruise traveler should know that the distance between Barcelona's two cruise ports and the Airport is around 23 km (15 miles) away.

Photo of Taxi in Barcelona.

Taxi in Barcelona

Regardless of whether you are embarking or disembarking, a taxi is one of the best ways to travel from or to the Airport. A taxi between the Airport and the Port (Moll Adossat) will cost approximately €40.00 and a little bit less if the WTC Port is the final destination - Check the Official Taxi Fares in Barcelona.

There are also a number of private services that offer transfers to and from the port to either the Airport or/and Hotels that can be very convenient. One of the best services to look into is Bags & Go - this company handles your luggage (transfer and lockers) whilst you can enjoy a few hours exploring Barcelona.

Photo of Bags & Go Van.

Bags & Go Van in Barcelona

Fares are both reasonably affordable (around $12.00 per person/piece of luggage) and you can book it online or right at the terminals as you pick up your luggage. To learn more about Bags & Go click here .

Photo of Terminal B in Barcelona.

Terminal B, Moll Adossat, in Barcelona

If staying in Barcelona, it is very easy to calculate a taxi fare to or from a hotel and compare it with the transfers offered by all major cruise lines. The official Barcelona Taxi website has a great Route Calculator in English - check the Taxi fares calculator .

Port of Call - Taxis and Shuttle

However, if Barcelona is a Port of Call on your cruise, travelers should avoid taxis if docked at the Moll Adossat and having La Rambla as a final destination.

There is an official extra charge (€3.10) for taxis to enter-exit the port and an unscrupulous taxi driver may take you for a long ride when, in fact, La Rambla is just around the corner.

Photo of T3 portbus in Barcelona.

T3 portbus in Barcelona

Instead of a taxi, it is advisable to use the circular route bus Cruisebus (aka T3 port-bus) between all Port Terminals and Plaça Colon close by the famous Ramblas, on the latge square by the World Trade Center.

These buses are suitable for wheelchair users. The fare is €3.00 one-way ticket and €4.00 return ticket, paid onboard in cash either in coins or bills under €10.00.

Cruise tip: because the Cruisebus (aka T3 port-bus) has become so popular thanks to its good service, most cruise lines do not offer shuttle buses to Plaça Colon anymore and the ones that do charge ridiculous amounts.

Cruise passengers may like to know that the Cruisebus can be booked online: click here to book the Cruisebus .

There is good news for those planning to cruise the Mediterranean on any of the Carnival Corporation Cruise Lines. In 2018, a new Cruise Terminal was built on the Moll Adossat for the fleets of Carnival Corporation. It is named Helix Cruise Center but may also be referred to as terminal E. This cruise terminal is at the end of the breakwater after Terminal D.

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Tarragona cruise port

Region Mediterranean - Black Sea

Local Time 2024-08-18 06:14

Port Tarragona cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Tarragona, Spain Costa Daurada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Tarragona is a port city located on Catalonia's Costa Daurada (northeastern Spain's coast, Mediterranean Sea) with population around 132,000. Costa Daurada ("Golden Coast") is named for the color of the sand when the sun is shining. Spain's Golden Coast is the area between Cunit (Baix Penedes) and Alcanar (Montsia).

Before the COVID crisis, in 2019, the Port (locode ESTAR) handled 63 cruise ship calls and ~128,000 passengers. Following the global crisis, in 2022 (April-November) the Port received ~70,000 cruise tourists (35 ship calls) arriving mainly on big-capacity liners from the fleets of major cruise companies like MSC , Costa , RCI-Royal Caribbean , Marella UK . Tarragona is also visited by smaller-sized ships and superyachts of ultra-premium travel brands like Windstar, Hapag-Lloyd, Phoenix Reisen, SeaDream.

For season 2023 (April-December), the Port had booked 55 cruise ship calls with estimated ~98,000 passengers.

In 2017, Port Tarragona and one of Europe's largest passenger shipping companies - Costa Cruises, signed a deal for homeporting here the 1700-passenger ship Costa neoRiviera in the period June 2 through September 22, 2017.

The seaport's proximity to Barcelona and the myriad of tourist attractions in and around the city make Tarragona an attractive and cheap homeport / departure port for Costa Crociere. The scheduled weekly departures plus 2 additional ship calls (by the 3780-passenger Costa Favolosa ) resulted in ~470,00 cruise tourists to the port in season 2017. neoRiviera's departures were scheduled for the Fridays. The ship's Mediterranean itinerary included Savona , Porto Torres (Sardinia Island) , Port Mahon (Menorca Island) , Ibiza Island , Formentera Island and Palma de Mallorca (Majorca Island) on 7-day roundtrips from Tarragona.

In 2016, the cruise port handled 22 ship calls (100% increase over 2015). For season 2018, the port had booked 50 ship calls. In the period 2013-2019, the cruise port handled a total of 305,888 tourists.

Tarragona is in the western Mediterranean, southwest of Barcelona (~1-hour drive distance from Barcelona Airport). The city's archaeological museum has an exclusive collection of Roman statues. The remains of defensive walls and a Roman amphitheater are also in downtown, and a 2-tiered Roman aqueduct is close by. The 12th-century-built Tarragona Cathedral is famous for its Gothic facade. In close proximity to the city are the famous Costa Dorado beaches, the Salou Park Resort and PortAventura World (entertainment resort and an amusement park, one of Europe's largest).

Tarragona is home to a comparatively large seaport and the internationally recognized Rovira i Virgili University. Much of the city's economy is based on chemical industries (situated to the south) and tourism. Among the most popular annual events that attract thousands of international and domestic tourists is the Santa Tecla Festival. In downtown can be found numerous small restaurants, live-music bars, cosy cafes (serving sandwiches, tapas, local seafood, traditional Catalonian dishes). El Serrallo's neighborhood (at the harbor) is specialized in seafood cuisine.

On December 3, 2021, was officially inaugurated the new cruise ship berth Balears Wharf. The special ceremony was attended by Pau Ricoma (Tarragona's Mayor), Francisco Toledo (State Ports Authority's President), Josep Maria Cruset (Port Tarragona's President), Jordi Puignero (Catalonia's Vice-President and Minister of Digital Policies and Public Administration), Teresa Cunillera (Delegate of the Spanish Government in Catalonia).

In February 2022, Tarragona Port Authority signed with GPH-Global Ports Holding Plc a 12-year concession deal, (with an optional 6-year extension) to manage the port's cruise services. Under the Global Ports-Tarragona contract's terms, GPH invested EUR 5,5 million (USD 6,3M) into building a new cruise terminal with dedicated bus parking and car parking areas. Tarragona Terminal's construction officially started on June 12, 2023. As of 2022, GPH (the world's largest cruise port management company) operates/manages 23 seaports.

In January 2023, Tarragona Cruise Port signed a homeporting agreement with MSC for a total of 26 roundtrips from Tarragona (embarkation/debarkation port) scheduled in 2023 for MSC Magnifica . The 7-day roundtrip itinerary from Tarragona visited France ( Toulon ), Italy ( Genoa , Civitavecchia/Rome , Livorno/Florence-Pisa ), and Spain ( Valencia ).

Tarragona cruise terminal

Construction works on the new cruise ship berth "Balears Wharf" at Port Tarragona started in 2020 (on April 17th), and were completed in 14 months (inaugurated on December 3, 2021).

The new infrastructure substantially changed Llevant's breakwater area, which was previously used for cruise ship docking.

The first cruise ship that docked at the Balears Wharf was MS Europa ( Hapag-Lloyd ) - on October 29, 2021.

By the EUR 27 million (~USD 30,4 million) project, the area was expanded to 4 hectares (10 acres / 40,000 m2. The new cruise berth (concrete structure) has length 460 m (1510 ft) which combined with the mooring line (berthing dolphins) of 700 m (2297 ft). This allows the port to handle even the world's largest cruise liners . The vessels are now able to dock on the wharf's both sides, which doubles the cruise port's capacity.

The new ship docking infrastructure is also opened up to cargo ships (solid bulk carriers) and doubles as a multipurpose terminal. With the Balears Wharf, the ferry and cruise port now has total mooring line (docking space) of 700 m (2300 ft).

In December 2020 were completed the works on the second connection between Llevant Breakwater and Balears Wharf's caissons (11 concrete foundations) and the project continued with its dredging phase. The connection (an overland link between the new berth's two sides) allowed the caissons to be filled with truck-transported material as well as the building of the extrados with a rear stone embankment. Balears Wharf's interior was later filled with material dredged from the sea area between the port's wharves Cantabria and Andalusia, which additionally increased the berths' dockside depths.

Before the dredging, pipes were also installed under the Wharf to prevent fish from trapping in the enclosure formed by the caissons, the two rockfills and the breakwater. Port Tarragona is also planning to install shoreside power capabilities in order to supply the docked at Balears Wharf ships with city-grid electricity thus saving fuel and reducing air pollution in port.

In June 2021 was completed the outer wharf's edge beam (460 m) and started the construction of the inner wharf's edge beam (270 m). On the concrete edge beam bears the weight of the ships moored to its bollards (sturdy vertical posts for the mooring lines/ropes).

(NEW) Tarragona Cruise Terminal

In October 2021 was approved a tender process for the construction and concession of a new cruise terminal at Balears Wharf. The new facility was to be sized minimum 5900 m2 (63500 ft2) and to be operated under a 12-year concession (starting March 2022).

The facility (inaugurated in June 2024) utilizes solar power (for its energy needs) and provides retail shopping and food and beverage opportunities. The Terminal's modular design provides flexibility for adapting the facility for future expansions. During no-ship days, the new terminal doubles as event space, hosting concerts, art exhibitions, conferences, etc.

Tarragona Cruise Terminal's construction officially started on June 12, 2023.

The cruise port's plans include a EUR 0,7 million project to develop Balears Wharf's logistics zone that features a 2,2 km long (esplanade (waterfront promenade). The tourist enhancements include pedestrian pavements, traffic flow, parking areas, bus stops, as well as environmentally friendly features like pergolas/shaded walkways with roof solar panels and LED lighting, landscaped areas with low water consumption plants, parking zones with surface drainage systems (for the rainwater), and vertical signage.

  • August 17, 2024

Rotterdam Departing

Holland America Line’s recently announced 2026 cruise program in Europe includes four ships sailing to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.

Cruise Industry News looks at the highlights of the deployment, which also features six Celestial Cruises.

The Oosterdam is set to spend the summer of 2026 in the Mediterranean. Sailing from five homeports, the vessel will offer a series of seven- to 14-night itineraries to destinations across the region, including the Italian Riviera, the Adriatic Sea and the Greek Islands.

According to Holland America, the voyages were created by listening to guests’ feedback and include some of the most requested ports of call, such as Portofino in Italy and St. Tropez in France.

For a more in-depth look at the region, passengers can also book combined sailings of up to 27 days, the company said, with up to 21 days being sailed with no repeated ports.

Northern Europe Ships: Rotterdam and Nieuw Statendam Homeports: Rotterdam and Amsterdam (Netherlands); Reykjavik (Iceland); and Dover (England) Highlighted Ports of Call: King’s Wharf (Bermuda), Bar Habor (United States), Saguenay and Halifax (Canada)

Five Celestial Cruises take place across Northern Europe, while the other sails across the Mediterranean.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You’ll find Norwegian ships everywhere, from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.
