The Crab Nebula, the result of a bright supernova explosion seen by Chinese and other astronomers in the year 1054, is 6,500 light-years from Earth. At its center is a neutron star, a super-dense star produced by the supernova. As it rotates at about 30 times per second, its beam of radiation passes over the Earth every orbit, like a cosmic lighthouse. As the young pulsar slows down, large amounts of energy are injected into its surroundings. In particular, a high-speed wind of matter and anti-matter particles plows into the surrounding nebula, creating a shock wave that forms the expanding ring seen in the movie. Jets from the poles of the pulsar spew X-ray emitting matter and antimatter particles in a direction perpendicular to the ring. This image show the X-ray data from Chandra along with infrared data from the Webb space telescope.

Introducing NASA’s Curious Universe

Our universe is a wild and wonderful place. In this show, NASA is your tour guide. This season, we fight wildfires, defend the Earth from asteroids, and explore the invisible world of gravitational waves!

Episode Description:

In this special season five finale episode, join NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins, self-proclaimed “rock nerd” on a journey to the stars.

[Theme Song: Curiosity by SYSTEM Sounds]

HOST PADI BOYD: Hi Curious Universe listeners. We have a very exciting episode for you today to finish out season five of NASA’s Curious Universe.

HOST PADI BOYD: For our finale episode this season, we had the rare chance to sit down with a member of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-4 mission… Astronaut Jessica Watkins.

HOST PADI BOYD: As a refresher, the Crew-4 mission launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 27, 2022.

[[Sound from Crew-4 launch: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 4 ,4, 3, 2, 1, 0, ignition, and liftoff]]

HOST PADI BOYD: Astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, Jessica Watkins, and Samantha Cristoforetti spent 170 days aboard the International Space Station.

[Song: Shine On Instrumental by Hall]

HOST PADI BOYD: While in space, the crew orbited Earth more than 2,000 times and did some incredible science along the way… from growing plants without soil… to testing a concrete made from lunar dust!

[[Sound from a Crew-4 downlink with Darnaby Elementary School in Tulsa, Oklahoma:…My question is how do you grow and water plants aboard the space station?]]

[[ Jessica Watkins: Yeah so that is a big question that we’ve actually been working on answering here on the International Space Station for a while now…]]

HOST PADI BOYD: Their Dragon spacecraft, which they named Freedom, splashed down off the coast of Florida on October 14, 2022.

[[Sound from the splashdown: 200 meters, we’re bracing for splashdown. Copy, brace for splashdown. And again that descent rate is as expected here. Pretty soon we should be able to see the view of the ocean come into view as Crew Dragon Freedom with four astronauts onboard prepares to splash down, after spending 170 days in space after launching on April 27…]]

HOST PADI BOYD: Jessica Watkins was the first Black woman to be a member of a space station expedition, and the Crew-4 mission was also her first trip to space!

HOST PADI BOYD: When we sat down with Jessica, we had a lot of questions. But we started by asking if she, like the rest of us, always wanted to be an astronaut when she grew up.

[Song: Exploring the Surroundings Instrumental by Pes]

Jessica Watkins

…I first voiced, I think, a desire to be an astronaut when I was around the age of 9 or 10. I went to a school that was named after a female astronaut. And I think that was when I first asked my parents, you know, who she was, and a little bit about her story. And that’s when I first realized that you could go to space for a career, that that was an option that could happen. That is really what kind of kicked off my interest and passion for exploring the cosmos. But growing up, I had lots of different interests. I was always interested in reading and writing, as well as math and science. I was interested in sports and always kind of being a part of a team. So it’s neat to be in a role that ultimately is at the intersection of a lot of those interests.

We certainly have the privilege and honor of standing on the shoulders of giants. And so for me, particularly women like Sally Ride and Mae Jemison certainly paved the way and kind of enabled a path for myself and some of my colleagues to follow behind. And certainly grateful for the opportunity to, insofar as I’m able to, be that similar kind of role model as the ones that I had the privilege of growing up with, for young girls and particularly children of color growing up now. I’m certainly aware of and grateful for the opportunity that being a part of this crew represents.

HOST PADI BOYD: If you want to become an astronaut like Jessica, her best advice is to follow your own curiosity and study things you’re interested in.

HOST PADI BOYD: NASA needs people with different backgrounds and skill sets to keep the space station running… to do great science, and to explore places like the Moon and Mars…

[Song: Big Wide World Instrumental by Hearson]

What I’ve learned from my story at least, and certainly from the stories of my colleagues as well… we all come from such different backgrounds. We have doctors, pilots, geologists, biologists, engineers, you name it, we have people from those backgrounds in our office. I think it’s a really important message about how there is no one particular pathway to get to this role, one particular way to kind of achieve your dreams. Which is something I’m not sure I fully understood when I was younger. And so I think the message that I would share or the encouragement that I would provide is really to find something that you’re passionate about, whatever it is that gets you up in the morning and gets you excited to pursue that. It is in the pursuit of that, that you’ll be able to achieve your dreams, whatever they are.

HOST PADI BOYD: Jessica’s path from being a ‘kid looking up at the stars’ to becoming an astronaut wasn’t a straight shot. She had a lot of interests growing up. In college, Jessica started by studying engineering, because she thought that’s what future astronauts needed to do. Then, she decided to follow her curiosity…

I actually came into my undergraduate with the intent of being a mechanical engineering major. I found after a bit of time that that wasn’t my passion. It wasn’t something that I was super interested in, wasn’t interested in doing for the rest of my career. But it was something that I thought that I kind of needed to do in order to be an astronaut or to keep the door open for becoming an astronaut. It was really kind of at that crossroads where there were a couple of really interesting courses with titles like, ‘What Makes a Habitable Planet,’ ‘Planetary Materials.’ And I looked up and I said, ‘Whatever that is, that’s what I want to do.’ That was in the geology department. And so I signed up for my first geology class. And it was love at first class. From then on that passion just grew, as I continued in my career.

HOST PADI BOYD: To be an astronaut at NASA, you have to be highly skilled in your area of expertise… whether it’s geology, medicine, or engineering. But you also have to be skilled at something else… being a team player.

[Song: A Story of Champions Underscore by Burns]

HOST PADI BOYD: Jessica gained some of those collaboration skills in an unlikely field… on a rugby pitch, to be exact. During her time at Stanford University, Jessica was a star rugby player, who even helped her team win a national championship.

HOST PADI BOYD: Playing sports in school turned out to be perfect training for living and working with her fellow crew members on the space station.

One of my favorite things about rugby as a sport is really just how much of a team sport rugby is. I really have found that even as compared to some of the other team sports that I’ve played, there’s really a reliance on every individual contributor’s skill sets and strengths.

In order to be successful as a rugby team, it really requires that everybody comes to the table and relies on each other. Success is not possible without having people really of all different sizes and strengths and skill sets really working together.

And I think that type of teamwork is really applicable to human spaceflight. Human spaceflight is a team sport as well. And we have so many people with different experiences and expertise that they bring to the table that really allows us to do this hard thing, accomplish this goal of human spaceflight as a concept, but even on an individual everyday basis. Operating the International Space Station requires an entire team of people all coming together with one goal in pursuit of that one mission.

HOST PADI BOYD: Just like members of a sports team, the Crew-4 astronauts all had unique but crucial , roles to play… both when flying into space in the Dragon capsule and then while living and working on the space station for almost six months.

[Song: Taking Flight Underscore by Bellingham]

On the SpaceX Crew Dragon, which was the vehicle that we took up to the International Space Station, within that vehicle, we have more defined roles. I was a mission specialist and Kjell Lindgren was our commander, Bob Hines was our pilot, both NASA astronauts. And Samantha Cristoforetti was another mission specialist. She’s an ESA astronaut, European Space Agency. We each had different roles within the cabin and at different phases of flight. Kjell and Bob were more focused on the displays and understanding what state the vehicle was in.

Samantha and I had different responsibilities related to the ECLSS systems, the living and breathing systems of the Dragon, as well as the cargo and packing type of operations inside of the vehicle once we were on orbit as well.

We definitely each brought something different to the table there. When we transfer over to the International Space Station, we are all trained to be Flight Engineers is what we call it, and so we all have a similar set of skills to be able to kind of step into any different experiment or activity that we need to be able to do on board.

What’s really amazing is being able to work with a team of people on the ground, who all bring different skill sets, I think about just the visual of a mission control center, in Houston and elsewhere as well, in Hawthorne, and our international partners as well. In that room, you have so many different expertise, people who are focused on different systems of the ISS and ensuring that our mission is successful every day.

HOST PADI BOYD: Once you’ve studied something you’re interested in and you’ve been selected by NASA for astronaut training, what exactly does it take to get ready to go to space?

HOST PADI BOYD: Jessica was chosen for the 2017 astronaut candidate class at NASA.

HOST PADI BOYD:…That’s when her training really began.

[Song: Driving Motion Instrumental by Dubois]

When we get selected as a class, we have about two years of essentially basic training. We kind of get checked out in the main fields that we need to complete our role. Following that, once we get assigned to a particular mission, we’ll do about a year or so of training for that particular mission. But during that candidate training, that basic training, there’s really kind of five areas that we focus on. The systems of the International Space Station, robotics, EVA, so extravehicular activity, or spacewalking. We learn how to fly the T-38 jet, and Russian language training. Those are the five areas that we dive a little bit deeper into. All of it was really neat for me, I’m particularly, you know, not coming from an aviation background or having experience in a lot of those areas.

So it was really neat to be able to, be able to learn more about areas that I otherwise wouldn’t have really had any exposure to. Of course, learning to fly was super fun. I think for all of us, the newest skill set was learning about spacewalking, learning how to complete an EVA.

HOST PADI BOYD: One of the best places to prepare for working in space might surprise you… for some key training, you need to go underwater!

[[Sound of underwater environment and water bubbles]]

HOST PADI BOYD: The pressure of a deep dive is our best method of simulating what it might feel like to go on a spacewalk…

That training occurs in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, which is a large pool outside of Johnson Space Center in Houston. And there, we’re able to put on our spacesuits and go underwater to mimic the microgravity environment of the ISS.

HOST PADI BOYD: Before traveling to space on Crew-4, Jessica had the chance to train in even deeper waters… as an “aquanaut”!

[Song: Dancer’s Dream Main Track by Cohen]

We had the opportunity to participate in a NEEMO mission. So NEEMO is NASA Extreme Environments Mission Operations. What those missions entail is going down to the Aquarius underwater habitat, about 60 feet underwater off the Florida Keys. And so we lived down there for about 10 days. It really functions as an excellent analog for our missions on ISS. Kind of a similar schedule where we are doing a lot of different operational activities throughout the day. And we can even embark on EVAs outside of the habitat. So we were able to go out the bottom of the habitat, walk along the ocean floor and do a “spacewalk”, if you will, in that sense. Ultimately, for me was a kind of full circle experience that I was unaware of at the time, in that on my mission, NEEMO 23, Samantha was our commander. That was when I first met her and first got to spend time together with her. Pretty awesome to be able to actually build on that and fly to space together…

HOST PADI BOYD: So, what’s next for Jessica?

HOST PADI BOYD: Well, as part of NASA’s Artemis program, we’re going to learn more about the Moon and Mars. In the future, the agency will even retrieve rock samples collected by the Perseverance rover so scientists can study them here on Earth.

[Song: Saving the Planet Instrumental by Unwin]

It’s super exciting to be moving into this time in NASA’s history, where we are focused on going back to the moon, going to the lunar surface again, for longer periods of time and in a new location. And then, of course, looking to Mars in the future as well.

Certainly, as a planetary geologist, it is super exciting to be a part of that effort and to think about how we make those decisions on how we prioritize that science and choose instruments that will help enable that science.

It is a super exciting time in human spaceflight that is absolutely for sure. Really exciting just to be a part of the team but also the whole office, the whole agency really at NASA that is turning to set our eyes on going back to the moon to stay.

Having a successful Artemis I mission last November. And excited about Artemis II here coming up shortly. So we definitely are all just excited about any way that we can help out and participate in the effort. It’s a super exciting endeavor.

HOST PADI BOYD: With her astronaut training and first flight on the ISS behind her, Jessica’s excited for the next chapter of human spaceflight…

Going to Mars, in the future, getting humans to touch the surface and to collect samples, bring them back, as well as the samples that the rovers are collecting now. Really getting to just get to the next level of understanding of the fundamental history of Mars and the surface processes, everything that kind of contributes to the geologic history of Mars. Just excited about having kind of a human imprint on that, or a human participation in that understanding.

HOST PADI BOYD: One thing is for sure… as her journey at NASA continues, Jessica will always make sure she has one thing on hand… her curiosity.

What drives, really all of us here at NASA is I think a curiosity that we all have in common. Ass human beings, I think we all have this curiosity. And that’s just this desire to explore and to answer unknown questions. Hopefully not unanswerable questions, but questions that we haven’t yet answered.

And to really just participate in this process of pushing the limit of human capability, understanding, and knowledge. And it is just such a privilege to be able to be a part of that every day within NASA.

HOST PADI BOYD: Thank you so much for joining us for this special finale episode. And a huge thank you to Jessica Watkins for taking us to the stars!

[Theme song: Curiosity Outro by SYSTEM Sounds]

HOST PADI BOYD: This is NASA’s Curious Universe. This episode was written and produced by Christian Elliott and Katie Konans, and edited by Christina Dana. The Curious Universe team also includes Maddie Olson and Micheala Sosby.

HOST PADI BOYD: Special thanks to Bob Hines and Kjell Lindgren of the SpaceX Crew-4 team, and to Brittany Brown and Manny Cooper at NASA Headquarters.

HOST PADI BOYD: Thank you for tuning in to the fifth season of NASA’s Curious Universe. We’ve enjoyed taking you along with us as we’ve explored our wild and wonderful universe… from an Australian launch range to ripples in spacetime, and more. We’re taking a break now, but we’ll be back soon with more adventures!

School Teacher Gives Hater A Lesson They'll Never Forget

You've heard of fat shaming, you've heard of mommy-shaming, but have you ever heard of teacher-shaming?

Middle school teacher Ms. Amy Allen was on the receiving end of some serious hate when it came to how one stranger thought she conducted herself in the classroom. Thankfully, Ms. Allen was ready to teach this shamer a lesson — and in the most hilarious way possible.

This Middle School Teacher Just Wanted To Make Learning Fun Again

"I love teaching middle schoolers because they are awkward, and I’m awkward, so we get along." - Amy Allen

The comment read: "your a teacher act like it." For those who paid attention in English class, you'll notice the glaring grammatical errors. It was almost too easy. School was in session, and this was one teacher-shamer who was not going to be saved by the bell.

Ms. Allen's response was a classic teacher move. In a follow up video, she wrote the troll's comment on the whiteboard, then humorously corrected the errors, turning it into a mini-lesson for everyone watching. She added proper punctuation, fixed the grammar, and even included a tongue-in-cheek reminder to "Come see me if you have any further questions." Talk about schooling the critics!

The video quickly went viral, garnering millions of views and cheers from her followers. It wasn't just her clever correction that resonated; it was the way she handled criticism with grace and a touch of humor. After all, teachers are no strangers to spelling and grammar lessons, even when they come from unexpected places.

"My Students Are The Ultimate Hype People" – Her Class Was On Her Team

Despite the rude comment, Ms. Allen's students were firmly in her corner. They rallied behind her, tracking the video’s growing views like they were monitoring a pop quiz's success rate. As her comeback video gained traction, her class grew even more excited.

"What’s funny is I left my correction on the board accidentally, and the next day, students asked me what that was all about. When I explained it, they thought it was cool because 'why would anyone go after Ms. Allen'? At that point, the video had maybe 10,000 views. I never imagined the video would go viral." - Amy Allen

The views were racking up, so Ms. Allen made her fifth-period class a deal. If the video reached 1M views during their class time, they could sit wherever they wanted for an entire week. It was a deal too good to pass up. When the millionth view hit, the room erupted in cheers. Ms. Allen shared she was a classroom "rockstar." The support from her students was overwhelming, and it showed that a teacher's connection with their class goes beyond the four walls of the classroom.

It is moments like these that remind us why teachers do what they do. It's not just about teaching math, science, or grammar — it's about building a community where students feel supported and valued.

From Troll to Triumph — Ms. Allen Keeps It Cool and Classy

Despite the negativity from an online troll, Ms. Allen's response turned a mean-spirited comment into a viral success story. By demonstrating her teaching skills and her ability to laugh in the face of criticism, she showed everyone that the classroom is a place for learning, not just for the students, but sometimes for the critics too.

In the end, it's clear that Ms. Allen knows how to turn a classroom into a lively, welcoming space. She isn't afraid to play games, encourage laughter, and build a supportive environment. And when she faced an online troll, she handled it with the same playful energy that makes her classroom so special.

Her story is a reminder that even when faced with negativity, the best response is often a little humor, a lot of class, and a touch of teacher magic. So keep up the amazing work, Ms. Allen, because you're definitely teaching us all a thing or two about how to respond to haters with style and a smile.

A Lasting, Passionate Relationship Isn't Just For Starry-Eyed Romantics—It's For Skeptics Too!

According to award-winning psychotherapist and TV host Dr. Jenn Mann, the #1 reason relationships don't make it past the 1-year mark is because as soon as our relationship doesn't go according to plan, tensions can get so high, the whole relationship crumbles.

"It is easy to get along in the honeymoon phase of a relationship. During the early stages, when we are falling in love, all we see is how alike we are and how wonderful our new partner is. We see our commonalities, not our differences. “You like pizza. I like pizza! We are so alike! We are perfect for each other!” We are merged. We feel like one person, a unit, a “we.” The first time we see our differences, it may feel like a huge betrayal (“What do you mean you voted for him?”), because it marks the moment when we are thrown back into the reality of being two separate people with different thoughts and beliefs." So what about all the people who make it past the honeymoon phase? The "1 year mark"? Does that mean they have it all figured out? Jenn Mann , Instyle

Maybe...but maybe not. Ask yourself are your partner really share a deep and powerful connection, or are you just co-existing...like glorified roommates?

We've all heard the dreaded saying, "I love them but I'm not in love with them"—in fact, we've probably even said it ourselves, but what if we told you that being "in love" isn't the luck of the draw you think it is?

What Are Relationship Goals? Why Are They Important?

journey to starts

Relationship goals are more than just whimsical fantasies or Instagram-worthy snapshots; they are the guiding principles that steer a couple toward a fulfilling and harmonious partnership. At their core, relationship goals encompass the shared visions, aspirations, and milestones that both partners aim to achieve together. These goals provide a roadmap for growth, fostering communication, understanding, and mutual respect along the way.

Most importantly, they serve as your relationship-sonar in times of turbulence so you and your co-pilot can navigate the storm together. From building trust and deepening intimacy to navigating challenges as a united front, setting relationship goals cultivates a sense of purpose and commitment that strengthens the bond between partners.

In essence, relationship goals aren't just important—they are the foundation upon which enduring love is built.

How to Get Clear on Your Love Goals

Whether you're in a happily committed relationship, enjoying the thrill of new love, or searching for a partner, setting relationship goals is within everyone's reach. But before we dive into pursuing the love we desire, it's important to have a clear idea of what that love actually looks like.

Some Questions To Ask Yourself

  • What does my ideal, healthy relationships look like?
  • What romantic relationships do I idealize?
  • How would my partner and I stay on the same page or resolve conflict?
  • How do I prefer to receive love from my partner?
  • How would my partner and I best communicate in everyday life?

When it comes to setting relationship goals, it's not one-size-fits-all. Getting a clear picture of what a healthy relationship looks like for you may be vastly different than what it looks like for a friend or a family member.

Don't be afraid to compare notes but try and stay away from comparing goals.

The 8 Most Important Couple Goals To Set And When

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 05: Actors Blake Lively (L) and Ryan Reynolds attend the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, 2014 in New York City.

First and foremost, relationship goals should be something both you and your partner set together. Setting one-sided couple goals probably isn't the best idea and will likely lead to disappointment. You have to start somewhere—and the best place to start is on the same page.

"When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time so that we could always prioritize our personal life. That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that - it takes balance." Blake Lively, Further Ado Podcast

If you're drawing a blank on what an appropriate relationship goal looks like, here are the 8 most important things to know when it comes to making your relationship work.

#1. Understand Each Other's " Love Language "

Counselor, Gary Chapman coined the widely popular theory of the "Five Love Languages". In his work, Chapman found that couples often had difficulty feeling and expressing love (despite their partner's best efforts). So he broke down the themes from these discussions into what's known as the five love languages:

  • Physical touch
  • Quality time
  • Acts of service
  • Words of affirmation.

Chances are, you and your partner don't have the same love language. The chances are even higher that you show your partner love the way you want to receive love. It's a bit of a trap. The problem probably looks a little something like this :

  • After a long work week, you spend hours cooking your partner their all-time favorite meal (acts of service)—the least they could do is wash the dishes (acts of service).
  • Instead, the dishes pile up in the sink while they run over to the TV and put on your favorite movie for a Netflix and cuddle sesh (Quality Time, Physical Touch).
  • Even though their heart's in the right place, you can't enjoy the movie because you're too busy thinking if they really "loved" you...that casserole dish wouldn't be soaking in the sink.

It easy to see why identifying you and your partner's love language is a quick way to get crossed wires, uncrossed. Good news is, "quality time" is one of the most common love languages and it here's a simple hack to get it right.

#2. Commit To A Weekly Date Night — "Don't Stop The Romance"

If there's one thing Suzanne Somers and Alan Hamel knew how to get right—it was romance.

After 55 years together, Somers heartbreakingly passed away in 2023 and fans were overwhelmed by Hamel's masterful letter he wrote to Somers in her final days. He found a way to pack 55 years of love into one last, beautiful, tearjerking punch.

But even though the love of his life would leave him too soon—Hamel and Somers lived with no regrets. They made every moment on earth together count. In rain or shine—dressed up or dressed down—the soulmates famously shared the secret to their marriage:

"Listen to one another, give each other a lot of attention, keep it exciting, date. My marriage is very romantic. … We might sit here and have a tequila. … We dance, I cook, we sit out and watch the moonlight on the ocean." Suzanne Somers

They also reportedly had sex twice a day—but who's counting!

#3. Maintain The Physical Connection

While we may not all have the libido of ThighMaster influencer Suzanne Somers we don't have to! When it comes to setting relationship goals around intimacy don't underestimate the significance of physical touch.

Incorporating consistent physical connection into your relationship offers numerous benefits. Simple gestures like hand-holding, hugs, or a reassuring pat on the shoulder can trigger the release of oxytocin, the "feel-good hormone," while also reducing cortisol levels, the body's stress hormone.

While physical intimacy is undeniably important, it's crucial to understand that it's just one facet of intimacy in a relationship. Intellectual, spiritual, and emotional connections are equally vital. Creating a safe and comfortable environment where both partners understand each other's preferences and boundaries enhances the pleasure derived from physical touch.

However, it's essential to approach physical intimacy with sensitivity and awareness. Attempting to force physical closeness or using it as a substitute for deeper emotional connection can backfire. Achieving a healthy balance in physical touch requires open communication, mutual understanding of body language, and respect for each other's boundaries.

Remember, physical connection encompasses more than just sexual intimacy. From a warm hug in the morning to a sweet kiss goodnight, there are countless ways to express affection and strengthen the bond with your partner.

You don't need to be an expert in massage therapy to reap the benefits of physical touch—simple gestures can go a long way in nurturing intimacy and emotional well-being. So, prioritize physical connections and make them an integral part of your relationship journey.

However, try not to get the purpose of the "love languages" confused. Showing your partner "love" is so important but it's not a substitute for the sometimes hard conversations.

#4. Improve Your Communication

See on Instagram

When it comes to love communication really is key—and miscommunications are one of the first things that can tear a couple apart.

As you’re building your list of goals, an important thing to think about is the way you and your partner communicate. It's easy to make the assumption that our partner knows exactly how we feel–—but assumptions can be deadly to a relationship. No matter how long the two of you have been together, your partner can never know what you truly feel unless you tell them. So prioritize communication.

"If I was going to have an equal voice with this very opinionated man, I had to get myself up." - Michelle Obama, "Becoming"

Understanding how your partner feels and why they think this way is critical to a healthy romantic partnership. Different backgrounds, upbringings and experiences can sometimes make it difficult to see things from our partner's perspective. Make it part of your relationship goals to better understand one another.

If communication is a couple goal you both want to prioritize but have trouble with, seeking the help of a licensed therapist to act as an unbiased evaluator can be a great tool to utilize.

Just ask Barack Obama and Michelle Obama! After 30 years together, the former President and First Lady have openly credited therapy as a huge help in making sure they are always on the same page!

#5. Discuss Your Shared Values And Prepare For Values To Change AS You Grow

One of the biggest miscommunications a couple can have is thinking they have the same values—only to find out, in big relationship-defining moments they couldn't be more wrong. A relationship-defining moment could be when a couple is deciding how they want to raise their children or whether or not they want to get married. This discovery can be devastating. The million-dollar question is, how do you avoid it?

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are great examples of a Hollywood "it" couple who had miscommunications and learned from it. "Bennifer" didn't make it the first time around—and the exes went on to raise their children in very different ways—with Lopez opting for a more lavish Miami lifestyle and Affleck keeping it low-key in LA. So what changed? What made this couple reunite years later?

Did the stars align? Or did they just get clear on their shared values?

Though the two went their separate ways in 2004, 17 years later they resurrected one of Hollywood’s favorite romances. After being spotted on multiple loved-up outings and at red-carpet appearances together, they were finally married in 2023. But before they tied the knot the couple made it a priority to talk about what mattered and how this time was going to be different.

In an exclusive sit down with VOGUE, Lopez shared how the second time around was even better than the first. They had years to mature and become full-formed individuals. When they reunited they were no longer "two halves" struggling to make a whole. They were two whole people coming together who put their shared family values first, instead of their careers.

He’s a wonderful, wonderful father and father figure to them as well, ’cause he has his own three beautiful children and then there’s us. He’s fantastic. He really steps up to the challenge of what [being a stepfather] is and what that means, and they love him." Jennifer Lopez, VOGUE (2023)

Lopez and Affleck's story is a revealing reminder of the significance of aligning with a partner who shares your values, particularly when envisioning a future together. While initial discussions about important topics such as living arrangements, family planning, and career aspirations may lay the foundation for a strong connection, it's crucial to recognize that values can evolve over time.

Continual communication about evolving priorities and aspirations is essential for maintaining harmony and alignment within the relationship. Whether it's a shift in living preferences or a newfound desire to establish roots in a specific location, addressing these changes openly and honestly fosters understanding and prevents potential conflicts down the road.

If identifying your and your partner's values may feel too broad, here are the 7 most important "core values " according to psychotherapist and celebrity relationship guru, Esther Perel.

  • Communication : Keeping open lines of communication with your partner can set you up to have a successful relationship. The busyness of life can make it challenging for couples to keep one another informed. However, maintaining a clear back-and-forth of information is the only way to ensure the relationship will be sustainable.
  • Equality : Seeing each other as equals fosters mutual respect. This can create a deeper emotional connection and create greater intimacy between you and your partner.
  • Honesty : Honesty and trust go hand in hand. Being honest with your loved one allows you to build a healthy relationship. Without honesty, the foundation of the relationship can falter and lead to heartbreak.
  • Intimacy : Take time for physical and emotional intimacy. You should not ignore a healthy sex life, frequent displays of affection, and date nights.
  • Shared beliefs : Religious beliefs can play a significant part in a person’s life. Though religious differences do not always signal a deal-breaker, having shared beliefs can make navigating through life together, especially if parenting, easier.
  • Trust : Every good relationship needs a foundation of trust. Relationship experts claim trust is the most important value of every successful relationship. Without trust, romantic relationships quickly deteriorate.
  • Validation : Emotional validation is the process of making your partner feel understood. Ensure you acknowledge their points of view and emotions. Emotional validation provides mental health benefits and is a healthy way to care for your partner's well-being.

While it's highly unlikely you and your partner will share all values, you and your partner must have at least 3-5 of these values in common.

#6. Support One Another—No Matter What"Always supporting me (literally)"

The #1 most important shared values a couple needs to have, is family values. David Beckham and Victoria Beckham may just be the best example when it comes to demonstrating how powerful supporting your partner can be (literally)! After all, you're not just building a life together...you're building your forever family.

Even though celebs are stars in their own right—over 25 years together have proven the power couple are partners in work and in life. The couple share four children: Brooklyn , 24, Romeo , 21, Cruz , 19, and Harper Seven , 11.

In their widely successful Netflix doc, Beckham , The Beckhams unpack years of their life together. The ups (winning a World Cup), the downs (the cheating scandal that nearly broke them), and everything in between!

The power couple may lead crazy busy lives but it's never stopped them from making sure family comes first.

"Running a business [and] most importantly, being a mum, wouldn't be possible without David. Not only is he the most incredible father, but he's supportive and someone who loves and inspires me every single day." Victoria Beckham, Glamour Women of the Year Award.

The bottom line is—if you're putting them before you and they are putting you before them, you have the best chance for success. But supporting your partner can look different depending on the situation. It's not about blindly agreeing to everything they say. Sometimes it looks like challenging their beliefs to help them grow

#7. Fight Fair—Be A "Master Negotiator"

Disagreements in relationships are inevitable. How delicately a couple navigates conflicts can make or break a relationship. So that's why if you're going to fight, fight fair. Or in other words: compromise!

"I think everybody needs to be a negotiator. Everybody needs to have patience and know when to take a walk." James Brolin, PEOPLE

After 25 years of marriage to the legendary diva Barbra Streisand, it should go without saying that Brolin knows a thing or two about conflict resolution. His advice couldn't be more spot on.

RELATED: Barbra Streisand and James Brolin’s Advice for a Successful Marriage Is Seriously Simple

Research suggests that "happy couples" avoid criticism, steer clear of extreme language, and prevent arguments from escalating through joint problem-solving.

If you know your partner shuts down when things get heated, don't push their boundaries and force them to give you answers. Step back. Give them space to think. Or in James Brolin's words let them "take a walk."

Fighting fair can look like this:

  • Knowing how your partner's conflict resolution style may differ from your own
  • Respecting your partner's boundaries
  • Making your needs known

If this all sounds like a lot—one simple trick to remember when you're in a heated debate with your partner is to avoid starting a sentence with "you always..." or "you never..."!

Do they always leave the toilet seat up? They never take out the garbage?

Probably not. But the truth is, remembering this when we're "seeing red" can feel impossible. In the middle of a fight—the #1 most important thing to remember is this—what outcome do we really want after passions cool and the fight is over?

Do we want to hurt or do we want to heal?

#8. Manage Your Emotions—Don't Forget You Want The Same Outcome!

It shouldn't come as a surprise that effective communication is critical for a healthy relationship, but just because this goal is simple—doesn't mean it's easy.

When we have a problem with our partner it can be tempting to "outsource" for advice. We may call our mom or a best friend. We swear we're "just venting," but a lot of the time what we are looking for is advice.

That's not always a bad thing! But it can be a slippery slope (especially when you're not dealing with a licensed professional).

We can be quick to tell everyone what our problem with our partner is...except our partner!

That's why after over 30 years of marriage to Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker's best piece of advice is to "keep things just between the two of you".

RELATED: Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s Advice to a Lasting Marriage Is One Very Simple ‘Secret’

Asking outside opinions can distract us from dealing with the real problem. We can't expect someone to change if they don't know what is going on with us, right?

If Your Partner Calls You The More "Emotional" One...

If your partner calls you the more "emotional" one, when problems arise, you're probably pretty reactive. Chances are you read into every little action and behavior—when they seem "distant" you take it personally.

The "emotional one" is the person pacing in the living room, interrogating their partner who sits silently on the couch cross-armed. It's confusing. The more you try to "communicate"—the more they shut down.

But remember facts are not feelings! Sometimes when you think you're communicating—you're not. You may phrase your insecurities like a question—but really you're making a statement.

For Example: In a tense car ride after leaving your mother-in-law's house you may ask your partner, "Why do you never stand up for me?" Even though it's phrased like a question it's not. You're telling them they never stand up for you. It makes sense they may get defensive or shut down completely.

That's not a conversation. That's a confrontation.

If you're a volcanic eruption of emotions all your partner is going to want to do is step on rocks to dodge the hot lava!

Conflict Resolution Tip: For The "Emotional Ones"

Try taking a beat and not being so reactive. Breathe and ask yourself if the big emotions you're experiencing are rooted in reality. Then sit with it for a few days.

If you're still feeling you have something you need to say, then say it!

Your partner may get defensive but trust they will come around—because they want your relationship to work too. Don't jump on every little word they say. Wait it out. Actively listen instead of waiting for what you want to hear.

Don't take their pace personally. Just because you may want to "fix" the problem right away, doesn't mean it's always the right answer.

If Your Partner Calls You The More "Emotionally Unavailable" One...

For the "emotionally unavailable" ones, communicating looks completely different.

Unlike their partners, the "emotionally unavailable" ones tend to suppress and detach from their relationship conflicts. This can lead to big miscommunications that eventually push their partner away in the long run—which isn't what they want!

If the "Emotional" partner seems to care too much— the "emotionally unavailable" partner doesn't seem to care at all. However no matter how convincing their act may be, this isn't the truth.

The emotionally unavailable partner wants to be seen and heard too. They just don't know how to process their feelings at the same rate! The "emotional" partner has a tendency to take over the conversation and leave little room for the "emotionally unavailable" partner to process their feelings and say their piece.

So instead, they shut down. But what these personality types don't understand is their partner wants to hear how they feel. They just have a hard time asking instead of guessing.

RELATED: HOW YOUR ATTACHMENT STYLE AFFECTS YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Once you can identify why this caused you to feel a certain way, try and get into these habits:

  • Talk to loved ones about what they’re feeling
  • Write down what you think and feel
  • Try meditation or therapy
  • Exercise to relieve stress and increase endorphins
  • Practice being aware of their thoughts when they’re emotional
  • Remove themselves from an emotional situation if it is becoming uncontrollable

Don't be afraid to discuss these goals with your partner. It's about progress not perfection. They just want reassurance that you care. Don't be afraid to ask for them to work on their emotional regulation too.

These sorts of goals are often best met when both parties are working together, and often key components of a more lasting love.

If nothing else remember: it's not a confrontation, it's a conversation!

How to set goals: a normal and healthy part of a relationship.

You understand why it's essential to set goals in a healthy and thriving relationship and have a few couple goals in mind that you'd like to discuss with your partner. Now it's time to sit down and have a conversation. Here are a few tips for setting relationship goals with your significant other.

  • Choose a neutral space to discuss relationship goals
  • Determine the length of time for each relationship goal
  • Set check-in dates for each relationship goal
  • Include at least one fun relationship goal
  • Make sure your relationship goals are measurable
  • Evaluate how your love goals make you feel
  • Make sure your couple goals are equally weighted

Don't just set and forget your goals. Consistency is key. Achieving goals requires ongoing work from both you and your partner.

It Works If You Work It—Because You're Worth It!

Setting relationship goals takes time and effort – but the payoff is worth it. Even if you decide to start small, setting couple goals will undoubtedly yield a stronger relationship.

However it's important to remember while there is no shame in working on your relationship don't mistake setting goals with trying to change your partner. Sadly, sometimes when a relationship has soured it's a case of not-meant-to-be that all the self-help books in the world can't fix.

However, if you're merely ironing out the wrinkles with the right person and you both share aligned love goals, you'll have a clear pathway for achieving them and a means of assessing your relationship goals as you move forward. It's important to keep in mind that working towards relationship goals should be a positive endeavor – something that feels rewarding and enjoyable.

"Every woman in her late 20s goes through a period where she just doesn't believe love is out there anymore, but it is. And I think the minute you stop looking for it is when it comes for you." Kristen Bell

With the right tools, effort and mindset, you can use relationship goals to build the future you want with your partner.

‘This is where your journey starts’: Nearly 500 take part in largest Dixie Tech commencement ever

ST. GEORGE —  During what Dixie Technical College President Jordan Rushton called the highest energy he’s ever seen out of his nine commencements, a display of caps and gowns saw almost 500 future mechanics, tech professionals and engineers hear their names called, with one graduate even ready to shift gears at Ferrari.

journey to starts

Dixie Technical College conducted commencement exercises at the M. Anthony Burns Arena at Utah Tech on Thursday evening. A record 1,123 students were eligible to participate in the ceremony.

One of those graduates was student speaker Dylan Alexander, an automotive technology major. Alexander said he was unsure about the path he would take in life and that Dixie Tech gave him direction. It has also given him employment. He said he has accepted a role as an apprentice technician for Ferrari in Las Vegas, Nevada.

That news had been kept secret from Alexander’s family. The reveal was worth it, he said.

“It was amazing to see my family’s reaction to where I was working,” Alexander said.

His wife Brianne said she is excited to see his hard work pay off.

“I’ve seen the tirelessness,” Brianne Alexander said. “It’s just so cool to see he has this opportunity.”

Other speakers included Utah 2nd District Congresswoman Celeste Maloy, whose speech was brief, but attendees said it was memorable … despite what Maloy might say.

“I called some friends and asked for their advice on giving a graduation speech,” Maloy said. “They told me the graduates probably won’t remember much of what you say, and nobody will ever be mad if you finish early.”

Maloy is an attorney, as is her sister. She has three brothers, two of whom are engineers and the other a doctor. The baby sibling is a welder.

“But it’s him who is one of the smartest people I know,” Maloy said.

Her point was that hands-on training, such as the education offered at Dixie Technical College, is invaluable.

This year’s ceremony set a record not only in the number of graduates but also attendees, with over 3,000 guests present. The graduation celebrated a 93% placement rate of graduates obtaining jobs in their field of study or continuing their education.

Dixie Technical College’s graduation came from humble beginnings. Established in 2001, the inaugural class had just 26 adult students and 200 high school students graduate.

The college usually sees about a 20% increase year over year. Rushton said this class exceeded that number.

“As of today, we’re 24% over where we were last year,” Rushton said. “I think that Dixie Tech is being recognized; people are seeing what we’re doing and want to be a part of it.”

Rushton, having attended nine Dixie Tech graduations, said there is an energy about this year’s class that he hasn’t seen from previous groups. He offered advice for the students to take with them.

“Keep striving, keep working and keep building,” Rushton said. “This is where your journey starts. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of everything that comes your way.”

Alexander certainly has. He called Dixie Technical College “a place where dreams can come true.”

“ Each of us has a dream that we want to do with our lives,” Alexander said as he neared the end of his speech. “There’s no reason you can’t accomplish those dreams. You can do it. We can all make our dreams come true.”

And quoting Enzo Ferrari, the legendary Italian motor racing driver and entrepreneur, Alexander closed by saying: “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

How 'Ahsoka's Hayden Christensen Cameo Made Star Wars Feel Real to Eman Esfandi

The actor was in awe of Anakin Skywalker.

The Big Picture

  • During the Ahsoka panel at Calgary Expo, Eman Esfandi shared insights on the series, including memorable moments from filming with Hayden Christensen.
  • Esfandi's surreal experience on set with Christensen helped him appreciate the sheer magnitude of making a Star Wars project.
  • Ahsoka , starring Rosario Dawson, follows Ahsoka Tano's journey to prevent the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

At this year's Calgary Expo, the "All About Ahsoka " panel, featuring Eman Esfandi and Diana Lee Inosanto and moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt , offered attendees a unique glimpse behind the scenes of the Star Wars universe. During the discussion, Esfandi shared an intriguing anecdote about a particularly memorable night filming Ahsoka , a series that expands the lore surrounding its titular character, Ahsoka Tano, portrayed by Rosario Dawson .

Ahsoka takes the series into both familiar and new territory, reintroducing characters such as Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen , and introducing Esfandi’s character, Ezra Bridger, into live-action. Ezra, a key figure from the animated series Star Wars Rebels , is known for his deep connection to the Force and a complex path from a young, impulsive rebel to a mature Jedi. His journey in Ahsoka was highly anticipated by fans eager to see the character transition into live-action. During the panel, when asked about the weirdest moment on set, Esfandi recounted a surreal experience involving Christensen, who returns as Anakin Skywalker, a character pivotal to the entire Star Wars saga. Esfandi described a long and exhausting day on set that stretched into the early hours of the morning.

"I was on set probably till 10 or 11 PM in the backlot, late night, long day. So you get kind of delirious and loopy. The night went on, and it got late, way up to [around] 3 AM, so I'm super loopy," Esfandi continued. The two spent hours talking about everyday things like tennis and snacking on fruit, typical ways to pass the time between scenes.

Hayden Christensen "Epitomizes" 'Star Wars' for Eman Esfandi

Despite knowing Christensen and understanding his iconic role in Star Wars , Esfandi hadn’t fully connected Christensen’s real-life persona with his legendary character until witnessing him in action. Watching Christensen make that iconic appearance made the whole Star Wars experience feel real to Esfandi. He explained:

"And then, sure enough, it's his time to go on the mound where Ahsoka and Sabine both see him at the end of this series. And it's obviously a very mystical scene, and I'm watching it, it's 3 a.m. and I'm there with Dave Filoni ’s wife, and we're watching it. And I'm like, 'Wow, what is this world that I'm in?' I got emotional, like I woke up. So that was weird. And I was like, 'oh, this is Star Wars, like The Star Wars.' He sort of epitomizes it in a way for me."

The moment not only brought Esfandi a deeper appreciation for the Star Wars universe but also highlighted the personal transformations actors undergo as they take on the responsibility of playing these epic, larger-than-life characters. A second season of Ahsoka is in the works, and the first season can be seen now on Disney+. Stay tuned at Collider for more.

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

‘One Shot Away’: Follow Korn Ferry Tour stars on journey to PGA TOUR card

Change Text Size

The Korn Ferry Tour winds its way through several countries and U.S. states, with roughly 150 players seeking 30 PGA TOUR cards.

The 2024 Korn Ferry Tour schedule includes 26 events, hundreds of travel hours, and thousands of decisions to strategize. In the end, a single stroke could be the difference between fulfilling a lifelong dream and waiting until next year.

That’s the Korn Ferry Tour’s dramatic reality, which is depicted on “One Shot Away.”

'One Shot Away' series premieres Sunday, April 28 on CBS

The series, produced by PGA TOUR Entertainment, goes behind the scenes in capturing the essence of players’ lives inside and outside the ropes, seeking any marginal advantage that could potentially save a stroke throughout the season, which could prove the difference in earning a PGA TOUR card or returning to the Korn Ferry Tour in 2025.

The top 30 finishers on the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, finalized after the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance in October, will earn 2025 PGA TOUR membership. That’s the goal, with various ways to get there – it could be a couple of big weeks, or a series of steady showings. If past is prescient, the graduating class will include a mix of promising up-and-comers and wily veterans, looking to follow the lead of Scottie Scheffler (Korn Ferry Tour Class of 2019) and ascend to world No. 1.

Who will hear their name called at the season finale and receive a coveted PGA TOUR card? That’s anyone’s guess, and that’s the Korn Ferry Tour’s beauty.

Here's a capsule look at the 2024 cast of “One Shot Away” and the six Korn Ferry Tour members who are each seeking their first PGA TOUR card for 2025:

  • Tim Widing : The Swede attended high school with Ludvig Åberg and looks to join his countryman on TOUR in 2025. Widing is a trick-shot enthusiast who played collegiately at the University of San Francisco and earned his first Korn Ferry Tour title at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in April.
  • Fred Biondi : The University of Florida product authored a nifty double in 2023, winning the NCAA Division I men’s golf individual title while also helping the Gators win a team championship. The Brazil native finished No. 2 on the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking, behind only Åberg, to earn Korn Ferry Tour membership.
  • Ross Steelman : The Missouri native began his college career at the University of Missouri before transferring to Georgia Tech, where he finished No. 4 on the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking to earn Korn Ferry Tour membership. Steelman, 23, learned the game at Perche Creek, a hybrid go-kart track/mini golf course and driving range in his hometown of Columbia, Missouri, and his family drove to various junior events across the Midwest in his formative years – a la Scheffler.
  • Cooper Dossey : The Texas native played collegiately at Baylor University, where he became the school’s first First Team All-American in 2020, and he spent two years on mini-tours before earning Korn Ferry Tour status via PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry last fall. Dossey, 26, embraces his stutter, stamping his wedges with words that he struggles to say. He also hosts a podcast called “The Stutter Putter.”
  • Sam Choi : The gregarious Californian graduated from the University of New Mexico before spending a fifth collegiate season at Pepperdine in 2022-23, finishing No. 11 on the PGA TOUR University Ranking before turning pro. Choi, 23, finished No. 2 on the 2023 PGA TOUR Canada’s season-long Fortinet Cup to earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for this season. Outside of golf, he enjoys pickleball and spikeball.

Randall basketball star reflects on career and next step of journey

journey to starts

Coming into his freshman year at Randall High School, KJ Thomas was an unassuming 5’5,” 125-pound basketball player, but he now leaves the program as its all-time leading scorer, heading for the next part of his journey at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Making the varsity team as a freshman, Thomas only averaged just over 3 points a game, but when he entered his sophomore year, Thomas had a major growth spurt that now had him standing six feet tall and an opportunity to be a starter. Thomas ran with the chance to play, showing his potential to be a special player for Randall, averaging 21.5 points and 4.5 assists per game, and was named the Amarillo Globe-News 2022 newcomer of the year.

As a junior, Thomas led his team to its first state semifinals in program history against Oak Cliff Faith Academy. Although Randall lost 67-47, Thomas scored 33 points in the game. For that season, he was named the Amarillo Globe-News Player of the Year, averaging 22.9 points and 3.7 assists per game. As a senior, he led his team back to the state semifinals and became the all-time leading scorer in Randall High School history. He holds the record for most points and 3-pointers in a single game.

Recruited by multiple Division One teams, including Louisiana Tech, Texas State, and Drake, Thomas signed his letter of intent to play for the UTEP Miners in September of last year. Thomas is known for his all-around play, his ability to get his teammates involved with his passing, and his prolific outside shooting.

At Monday’s ceremony naming the gymnasium for longtime Randall High coach Leslie Broadhurst, Thomas reflected on his playing career with Randall High School and his journey going forward with college basketball with the Miners.

“These last two years have been very special for me,” Thomas said. “My junior year, this was the first time the team has ever been to state. That was a great team that really struggled at the beginning of the year, but we really picked it up. Just making that trip down there was fantastic. Continuing that was my senior year; going to state again was awesome. We fell a little short of our goals, but I would not want to do that with any other team."

Every year, Thomas improved as a player, and he credits Broadhurst with his improvement as a person.

“I grew a lot since my freshman year. Coach Broadhurst and I always talk about my freshman year and how he believed, and I just grew as a leader,” Thomas said. "Being under Coach Broadhurst really helped out a lot. I worked extremely hard to get it done, but when you have teammates and coaches like I had, it just makes it that much better and easier.”

Thomas said that his key to choosing UTEP was that it felt like home on his visit. He cited assistant coach Jeremy Cox as a core reason for his choice, but the whole UTEP staff impressed him

“I loved the coaches and players; it felt like a second home where I could see myself for the next four years,” he said. “I just love to play for El Paso. The whole staff showed a lot of love, and it felt like I was at home.”

On his first visit to El Paso, Thomas said he was highly impressed by the campus and surrounding city. He also said he was not aware of the basketball team's history before the visit.

“I really did not know much about El Paso, but when I went there, I was extremely surprised at how nice it was. I really loved it.” Thomas said. “I did not start learning about the history until they started talking about the national championship and Don Haskins. Being at that school is a great honor; they have a lot of tradition that I would love to carry on.”

The atmosphere and the fan support were also big factors, according to Thomas.

“When I went on my second visit to UTEP, it really sold me on the school,” he said. “The team is really just like a family, and you can tell by how they play on the court. You can tell by how far they went this year to the conference championship. The continuity of that team with the family vibe, and the fans' and coaches' love and support, really impressed me.”

Thomas cited former Miner Souley Boum as his favorite UTEP player. Thomas said that upon seeing a video of Boum play by Cox, he was really impressed.

Thomas described his game and his expectations as a freshman at UTEP, where he will start in the summer to pursue a degree in business. He feels his greatest strength is his passing ability, but his defensive intensity is something that he wants to work on.

“I will say I am a leader, and I can get my teammates involved and score when I need to,” he said. “I am an all-around player and a winner. I wanted to go into a place where I had a chance to play immediately, and I feel like they offered that to me. If I work hard and do what I am supposed to, I will definitely have a chance to play quite a bit. I just want to bring a winning culture to UTEP like they already have.”

James Harden was named as Thomas’s favorite player whom he would like to mold his game after. “He scores with the ball in so many ways and can pass the ball,” Thomas said.

Thomas hopes when people look at his legacy at Randall, he wants to be remembered for more than being a great basketball player.

“It is an honor and a privilege. I want to thank God for this opportunity,” Thomas said. “I hope my legacy is that first of all I was a great and genuine person, and second that I was a man of God.”

Local News | CRYSTAL APPLE: Mindy Meier helps preschoolers get off to the right start in their educational journey

Mindy Meier, child find coordinator at Hagne Early Education Center, helps ensure students have a successful start to their educational journey. (Callie Jones/Journal-Advocate)

For little ones and their families who are just entering the school system for the first time, it can be a bit daunting. Fortunately for students at Hagen Early Education Center, interim child find coordinator Mindy Meier is there to help ensure they get off to the right start.

Meier always knew she wanted to work with children and she especially loves the preschool age because they’re durable and easy to teach, plus “they keep you on your toes.”

She has been at Hagen for five years now. Meier previously worked for RE-1 Valley School District in the ‘90s before spending 25 years in Sidney, Neb. She had planned on semi-retiring after leaving Sidney but she just missed the kids and teachers too much, so she decided to come back when she saw the position at Hagen was open.

Her favorite part of the job is meeting the families, who are all different. In her line of work, she’s come to see that parents “really do want the best for their kids” and knowing how hard it is to be a parent in the world we live in right now, she wants to make it just a little easier.

In her years back at the school she has definitely made an impact.

“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Mrs. Mindy. Mindy is often the first person for preschools and their families to meet. She always goes the extra mile to make sure they feel welcome and that they are taken care of,” said one of her Crystal Apple Award nominators, Jamie Wright.

She went on to share that Meier is continuously looking for new ideas and ways to help students be successful and support the school’s teaching staff.

“She is often a work on her days off, just to make sure everything is finished. You can always reach her after hours if you need anything; she even calls and checks in when she is on vacation,” Wright said.

Another award nominator, Taylor Cowden, has had the pleasure of working with her for the last three years at Hagen and has witnessed her “unwavering dedication to the children in our district. I have seen her constantly go out of her way to help students and their families above and beyond what her normal job duties consist of,” she said.

Cowden noted that Meier is oftentimes the first person a student meets before they start their experience with Hagan. A lot of the kids have never been to a school or any program outside of the home before, which can be a difficult adjustment but Meier “makes sure that every parent is confident in leaving their child with us.”

“She is always ‘on the move,’ going from school to school to help out whenever she may be needed. Mindy is always willing to do whatever it takes. She goes above and beyond for every coworker, parent and student! Mindy really is the glue that holds us together,” Cowden said.

Serving as the face of the school and the first person that families meet in their educational journey can bring some pressure but Meier said she likes meeting the families. She is also well aware of the many stresses that families may be facing and wants to make sure school is not a stress for them.

“I want the introduction to school to be as easy as possible and (for them) to know they have an ally, a friend at school and I’ll try to help as much as I can,” Meier said.

It’s not just students and families that she is there for though, but also her colleagues.

“I honestly don’t know what I would do without Mrs. Mindy. She is always in my corner and willing to help me whenever I ask. We work well together and I just genuinely enjoy working with her. She started as a coworker and has become a deer friend. Mindy is a team player and I am so glad she is on my team. She puts her heart and soul into our district, our students and our families. She is so deserving of the Crystal Apple Award,” Wright said.

A third award nominator, Tara Gress, is currently working under Meier and said, “She makes sure to keep constant communication with me. She helps me whenever I have questions and she listens to my suggestions.”

She went on to share that she has seen Meier help a family who weren’t sure if they wanted their child to have services or even attend preschool.

“Not only did Mindy help ease their mind about everything, she would send updates on how the child was doing to the parents. Mindy will do anything that is asked of her, especially when it comes to helping a child. I have seen her running from one school to another to make sure that students are getting what they need and the teachers are getting the support they need,” Gress said. “Mindy has a heart of gold and it shows with her interactions with the students and their families.”
