For us Uruguay is a unique destination in South America, brimming with hidden treasures, making every trip so different and so special. And at Lares we have real-life, in-depth knowledge of it all, having stayed at every hotel, visited the regions and tried each excursion that we then recommend, meaning you, or your traveling clients, could not be in safer hands. What’s more, the top accommodation options in the country are cherry-picked to ensure that your Uruguayan home is just as memorable as the day-to-day experiences themselves. Hold onto your hat as Uruguay takes you on one epic adventure.

Montevideo is an eclectic mix of 18th-century architecture, smoky asado joints and steamy milongas. Soak up world-class beaches in Punta del Este; experience the everyday life of gaucho culture, then sip mate surrounded by mountain scenery at an estancia homestay. Whether you’re strolling the streets of Colonia del Sacramento, getting into the buzz of a rodeo in Tacuarembo or eating your weight in steak at Mercado del Puerto, Uruguay sure knows how to take you along for the ride.

Learn more about Uruguay

Best time to visit uruguay.

Given its humid sub-tropical climate, Uruguay is suitable to visit virtually all year round, although warm coats are needed in the winter months (June-August) when the temperature drops to an average of 50 degrees F. From there, the crowds rise in accordance with the mercury. And by the peak of summer (January), the coastline teems with tourists and holidaymakers, meaning a little more planning can be needed to ensure prime accommodation. Don’t be discouraged by peak season though - there are plenty of remote surf breaks and relaxed coastal towns in which to wile away the summer, and there’s always the option to head inland for a taste of fresh air and the country life!

Culture and customs

Uruguay’s national identity embodies all the characteristics you would seek in a friend – being independent, strong, loyal, generous and honorable. Much of Uruguayan culture is largely influenced by Spain and Italy, probably because most Uruguayans have at least some Spanish or Italian in their background (a whopping 88 percent of the population is European). Architecture (particularly in Montevideo), cuisine and the arts are all dripping in Spanish and Italian influences. Elements of African culture have also woven their way into Uruguayan culture, most notably in the music. Candombe is a popular drum-based music derived from African rhythms, and tango – which has roots in Montevideo – heavily influenced by African culture. Uruguayans tend to be well educated and not particularly religious. They’re more likely to spend their Sundays feasting on grilled meats with family and friends at an asado than at church. And like the rest of South America, football (soccer) is an important part of life.

Eating and drinking

Uruguay’s cuisine reflects the country’s large European (predominantly Spanish and Italian) population. All types and cuts of meat are grilled and consumed in large quantities, either at an asado (Uruguayan barbeque) or a parrillada (a barbeque restaurant). Street vendors and pubs across the country also offer quick grilled meals, like choripan (sausages stuffed into a white roll topped with chimichurri) or chivito (steak sandwich).

Must-try foods in Uruguay

Imagine your average backyard barbeque, multiply it by ten, and then you’ll have an idea of what a Uruguayan asado is all about. A large assortment of meats are prepared on a special charcoal grill called a parrilla. Expect sausages, ribs, steak, blood sausage and so much more served with bread, salads and a variety of condiments over several hours.

So much more than just a simple sandwich, chivito is a beloved, albeit artery-clogging, national dish. Slices of steak are stuffed in a fluffy white roll and topped with ham, cheese, tomato, a fried or hardboiled egg and other delectable sauces and condiments.

3. Alfajores

This classic treat, popular across Latin America, can be found at every corner store, supermarket and bakery. The basic alfajore consists of a dollop of gooey dulce de leche sandwiched between two shortbread cookies. You can find a bunch of tasty variations.

Geography and environment

Flanked in equal measure by Argentina , Brazil and the Atlantic, Uruguay is the second smallest nation in South America, with a staggering 50% of the population living in the capital. The temperature is mild, with summer highs in January tipping 100°F (30°C), while the July winter temperature dips as low as 43°F (6°C). The landscape is predominantly rolling grasslands, small but fertile hills and an abundant coastline. Rainfall is modest and evenly spread through the year, however the absence of large wind-blocking mountains means Uruguay can be prone to high winds.

Top 5 beaches in Uruguay

1. punta del este.

As Uruguay's answer to the French Riviera's St Tropez, Punta del Este may be a little too glitzy or hectic for some - particularly in summer - but away from the hustle and bustle zone, there are miles of sublime beaches that stretch out either side of the city, plus several discount accommodation options tucked neatly away in other parts of town.

2. Punta del Diablo

Having drawn in droves of travelers for the past few years, Punta del Diablo can no longer claim to be a quieter option that its southern counterpart. But despite its growing popularly, this is easily one of the best beachside locales in Uruguay and well worth the trip north.

3. Cabo Polonio

Sitting on the east coast of Uruguay, this remote location can only be accessed on foot or by 4x4 across the sand dunes. With no electricity or running water, locals (to the tune of 75 people) use generators and collect rain water, making it the perfect place for a little escapism.

4. La Pedrera

A popular haunt for backpackers and Uruguayans, La Pedrera is characteristic of the small, idyllic beach towns north of Punta del Este. Here, it's still possible to find a sparsely populated stretch of white sand and top-notch surf breaks.

5. Piriapolis

With the enviable backdrop of one of Uruguay’s few mountains, Sugar Loaf, Piriapolis boasts a stack of great beaches plus a waterfront boardwalk and busy marina.

Shopping options are most extensive in the nation’s capital, where Western-style malls (Montevideo Shopping Centre and Punta Carretas Shopping) can be found alongside boutiques selling independent designers and markets brimming with souvenirs and local handicrafts. Head to the Tristan Narvaja Street Market on Sundays to shop clothes, artisan goods, antiques and food (perhaps pick up your own mate cup here). Or support local talent by browsing the three outputs of the Mercado de los Artesanos, where artists have a fixed place to sell their work.

Festivals and events

Gnocchi day.

A delicious tradition that stems from Uruguayans remarkable ability to turn a hardship on its head – on the 29th day of each month, people eat gnocchi. Originally intended as a cheap meal at the end of the month when money was scarce and all that was left for food was flour and potatoes, today many restaurants make a big deal of this tradition with some serving only gnocchi on the 29th.

Tacuarembo Fiesta de la Patria Gaucha

Uruguay’s most authentic celebration of gaucho culture takes place each March over five days, packed with concerts, dancing, barbeques and gaucho showmanship. Don’t miss the parade when thousands of horseback riders in full gaucho regalia trot through town.

Natalicio de Artigas

The birthday of Jose Gervasio Artigas, the father of Uruguayan independence, is a big deal across the country. Expect parades, street festivals, music, dancing and other dazzling displays of patriotism each year on 19 June.

Semana Santa (Holy Week)/Semana Criolla

The week before Easter can be quiet for tourists, as most towns empty out as Uruguayans visit relatives or go on vacation. The exception is in Montevideo, however, where gaucho culture infiltrates the city’s parks through barbeques, rodeos and handicraft exhibits as part of Semana Criolla.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of El Salvador by joining one of the 10 Best El Salvador Tour Operators , ensuring a seamless and enjoyable journey.

The best time to visit Uruguay is during the summer months, from November to February. The coastlines are particularly enchanting during this time. Winter does not offer much travel opportunities in Uruguay.

Although Uruguay is a small and little-known country in South America, it still offers plenty of attractions and activities for tourists. From magnificent beaches to local and boutique wineries, you’ll be in for a splendid vacation in the country.

The most visited cities in Uruguay are Montevideo, the colonial capital of the country, Punta Del Este, a city that is exclusively known for its beach resorts and Colonia del Sacramento, a famous day tour destination.

Montevideo is absolutely bustling during the nights. They have special lively milongas, tango saloons, clubscapes and many more activities for you to engage in during the night. Enjoying their special Tannat wine during the night has its own place in Uruguayan culture as well.

Uruguay’s local famous landmark is probably the Artigas Mausoleum. It was erected in honor of Jose Gervasio Artigas Arnal, the father of the Uruguyan nation.

Home » Destinations » Uruguay » Montevideo

Though no one can quite agree on the etymology of the name of city of Montevideo, Uruguay’s urban capital will take your mind off of this concern with ample food, wine, music and visual treats. Seek them out at museums, as well as in the vibrant streets of the Ciudad Vieja where points of interest include the Mercado del Puerto, some seven houses of worship including the Sephardic Synagogue, and shady plazas for a quick break. Day or night, the Ciudad Vieja is buzzing with cafés, restaurants and music.

Montevideo is a great walking city, and just outside the Ciudad Vieja is Plaza Independencia, which is the city’s most important plaza, where downtown Montevideo begins. It is the also home to the heavily-guarded underground tomb with the remains of the Uruguayan independence hero José Artigas. The grassy plaza is also home to the remaining piece of the citadel wall and the 26-story Palacio Salvo, which, at the time it was built, was the tallest building in South America, and still makes a huge impression with its unusual architecture.

Culture takes many forms in Montevideo, from pocket-sized galleries and surprise street performances to the world-class, including ballet, concerts and plays at the historic Teatro Solis. This preeminent theater of Uruguay was built in 1856 under Italian architect Carlo Zucchi’s direction. If your schedule does not permit taking in a show here, it’s still well worth the time to take a walking tour of the theater, which was fully restored in 2004.

CIUDAD VIEJA La Ciudad Vieja, or oldest part of Montevideo is a small, mostly cobblestoned quarter that showcases the colonial history of Montevideo city. The cathedral, main plaza and several museums are here, as well as the Mercado del Puerto, the most popular place in town to have a traditional Uruguayan lunch of grilled meat. Just outside of the Ciudad Vieja is perhaps the most photographed building in the country, the eye-catching Palacio Salvo, an eclectic-style building topped with an unusually top-heavy tower.

Unlike in almost every other capital city in South America, social life in Montevideo takes place not in the local plazas, but along what is one of the city’s greatest assets, the Rambla, or river walk that undulates along 22 km of the banks of the Rio de La Plata. Here, it is common to see friends, families, couples and teens wander the riverside, stopping to chat, listen to music, drink a mate (an herbal “tea” brewed in a communal cup) or fish along the river, especially in the late afternoon. The Rambla is a proposed UNESCO heritage site.

TRISTAN NARVAJA FLEA MARKET

The Sunday institution of the Tristan Narvaja Flea Market draws visitors and locals alike, in search of treasures from books to lamps, to antiques. It’s the best place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir, or if not, to people watch. Try a torta frita , a local version of fried dough, as you wander the streets like a local. For a more filling meal, try the chivito , a singularly Uruguay institution. It is a hot steak sandwich on a roll whose heaving toppings may include ham, cheese, egg, bacon, and hearts of palm.

We recommend visiting from September through May.

Ready to go? Here’s what to pack

Montevideo is often lauded for being the city with the best quality of life in Latin America, vibrant, eclectic and culturally alive. Weather is best outside of the rainy winter months, and locals know how to make the best of it, at local beaches or on the river walk called La Rambla. It’s a friendly city, with a slower pace than Buenos Aires, which it is often compared to, and which happens to be just across the broad Río de La Plata (day trips possible).

  • Closed-toed, comfortable walking shoes (it’s a big city and there is lots to see!)
  • Small backpacks or cross-bodied bags
  • Heavier coat and boots for winter travel
  • Sunblock (summer sun is strong)

Where to stay: Overnight Recommendations

Montevideo Sofitel Hotel

The Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco & Spa is a luxury option in Montevideo, and is perfect for visitors who prefer a sophisticated, historical stay. The 100-year old classic building is entirely French in architecture, and yet Uruguayan in furnishing, with a color scheme evoking the pastel colors of the Rio de La Plata, which passes by just outside, and inspired by tango culture. The hotel has 93 rooms and 23 suites and is considered an architectural symbol of Montevideo. It has indoor and outdoor pools, a casino and a spa. The hotel is located a short drive from the airport on the rambla, or riverside walkway, one of the defining features of Montevideo. The ramblas fill up with locals in the late afternoon to take a sunset stroll and drink mate, the herb-based tea drunk through a metal straw. But you might first like to take a 20-minute drive to Montevideo’s main attractions such as the Mercado del Puerto and Teatro Solis and check out Montevideo’s charming Ciudad Vieja (old city).

Montevideo Alma Historica Hotel

Alma Historica

It would be hard to beat Alma Histórica in the old part of Montevideo for a cute, chic boutique hotel in this capital city. It is located steps from the heart of the Ciudad Vieja, or old city, and is close to many of Montevideo’s main attractions. Each of the 15 stately, tasteful rooms in this architecturally appealing hotel is inspired by personalities of Uruguay’s past, and have hardwood floors and sitting areas. A grand marble staircase brings the space together. In addition, the hotel has several pleasant common spaces, such as a handsome library with upholstered furniture as well as a tearoom and lounge bar to enjoy a cup of coffee and a sweet treat or a glass of wine, if that’s more your style. There’s a terrace with deck chairs which overlooks Plaza Zabala, perfect for unwinding after a long day or having pre-dinner drinks (dinner is late in this part of the world). A visit to the hotel’s Jacuzzi or a massage are great ways to unwind as well.

We planned a 39-day trip to Chile and Argentina for this year. Once we had decided to go ahead and use Zicasso’s company, we spoke with our travel agent (we live in Australia) to discuss our requirements and the places we would like to visit. He filled the 39 days to include all the places we wanted to visit, plus some at his suggestion. We kept in touch by email, as well as in-person calls, on a number of occasions to discuss and confirm the itinerary with it being so long! We ended up with a fantastic itinerary that met all our requirements. Everything went to exactly to plan. When one of our internal flights was cancelled, we let our travel agent know. He answered straight away and let the hotels, etc, know that we wouldn't be arriving as planned. For us, knowing our agent was available at any time of day to assist if things didn't go to plan was one of our critieria when booking the trip. He also checked in with us the night we arrived, during the trip, and when we arrived home.

I cannot recommend Zicasso’s travel company enough! They orchestrated an unforgettable birthday adventure for our group of four across Argentina, spanning the stunning landscapes of Patagonia, the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires, and the picturesque vineyards of Mendoza. From the moment we arrived, it was clear every detail had been meticulously planned with care. Each hotel we stayed at acknowledged the birthday celebration, adding an extra touch of warmth and hospitality to our experience. It truly made us feel special and appreciated. The guides provided in each city were exceptional. Not only were they incredibly knowledgeable about the local history, culture, and landmarks, but they also went above and beyond to ensure we had an enriching and enjoyable time. Their passion for their respective cities was infectious, and we left each excursion feeling enlightened and inspired. One of the highlights of our trip was the amazing seven-course lunches with wine pairings. All the transfers between locations were seamless, with the exception of those affected by the national airline strike, which was, of course, an extenuating circumstance and beyond anyone’s control. With all the details in the itinerary handled for us in advance, we were able to relax and fully immerse ourselves in the journey without any worries or stress. Overall, our experience with our travel company exceeded all expectations. They not only delivered on their promise of an unforgettable birthday trip, but also surpassed it with their exceptional attention to detail, professionalism, and genuine care for their clients' experiences.

Montevideo is the largest city, the capital, and the chief port of Uruguay. The settlement was established in 1726 by Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, as a strategic move amidst a Spanish-Portuguese dispute over the platine region, and as a counter to the Portuguese colony at Colonia del Sacramento. According to the census of 2004, Montevideo has a population of 1,325,968. It has an area of 200 square miles and extends 12 miles from west to east. The southernmost cosmopolitan capital city in the Americas and third most southern in the world, it is situated in the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. The city was under brief British rule in 1807 and was involved in the first major naval battle in the Second World War: the Battle of the River Plate.

4 Best Experiences In Montevideo, Uruguay

U ruguay is not exactly your typical vacation destination. It is not nearly as well known as, say, Argentina (hello fabulous Buenos Aires) or Brazil (hello carnival). Both countries are well-traveled tourist destinations in South America. But to tell you the truth, with all Uruguay has to offer, especially its capital Montevideo, I’m rather surprised it’s not on more travelers’ radars.

While living in Santiago, Chile, I traveled a lot. After spending some time in fabulous Buenos Aires, I learned of a ferry that sailed from Buenos Aires to Montevideo. It arrived in Montevideo in under 3 hours and seemed like a no-brainer to get to explore a new country for a long weekend.

I spent 4 awesome days in the lovely capital of Uruguay. Here, I’ll share with you the best experiences you can have while visiting this underrated city. And if you find yourself in Buenos Aires with a few extra days on your hand, check out that ferry and get yourself to Montevideo. You won’t be disappointed.

1. Take A Free Walking Tour

Free walking tours are some of my most favorite things to do in any city I travel to. Why? Well, first, they’re free. It’s my favorite word when it comes to traveling. Second, they are a great way to orient yourself in the city.

I like to take these walking tours as soon as I can upon arriving. This way, I get the lay of the land and know the areas I’d like to return to and the attractions I’d like to visit later and explore more.

In Montevideo, there are a handful of free walking tours you can choose from. Most tours meet in Plaza Independencia. Your tour operator will let you know how to spot them. Usually, the guide will be holding a colored flag or they might wear a brightly colored t-shirt. If you see a big group of foreigners gathered together on the plaza, that’s probably your group.

It’s a good idea to sign up for the tour, however, if you happen to just show up, they aren’t likely to turn you away. The tours are usually about 3 hours and you will be walking everywhere, so ensure you have comfortable footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather that day.

In Montevideo, your tour will take you to the top spots in the city. These include the Ciudadela Gate, Artigas Mausoleum, and the Solis Theater. Along the way, you’ll learn all about Uruguayan history, culture, and traditions. Your guide will also (if you ask) tell you about local restaurants and bars to visit to get a real feel for the city.

Pro Tip: While it says it’s free (and that’s my favorite word), it is customary to tip your tour guide if you enjoyed your experience. Be sure you have some local cash on you to leave a “thank you” at the end of the tour.

2. Eat All The Beef

As one of the top five beef-producing countries in the world, if you’re going to eat beef anywhere, Uruguay is the place to do it. Believe it or not, I was a vegetarian when I lived in South America (no small feat on this meat-heavy continent). But, I made sure I got myself a nice, juicy steak to see what all the fuss was about.

Uruguay’s climate and mostly flat landscape means the cows can graze freely, resulting in meat that is very high-quality, tender, and tasty. Uruguay is also the only country in the world that has a computerized traceable system, which means buyers know exactly where their meat is coming from.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy this beef is with a traditional Uruguayan parrilla. A parrilla is a barbecue style that is found in many South American countries. Using a metal grill, which is placed over firewood, all sorts of meats and cuts are grilled to perfection.

There are several steakhouse parrillas to choose from in Montevideo. Because the quality of the meat is so superb, it will be hard to make a bad choice. But the place in which I enjoyed my first steak in decades is called El Fogon . There you can get a full parrilla consisting of several cuts and styles of beef and other meats. This is huge and will be best shared. They also offer seafood and pasta dishes.

Pro Tip: Be sure to complete your meal with a glass of Tannat wine. Tannat is the most widely grown grape in Uruguay. It’s a lovely, full-body wine best enjoyed with, well, steak.

3. Shop At The Flea Market

If you happen to be in Montevideo on a Sunday (try to be in Montevideo on a Sunday), do not miss the giant flea market spanning several blocks. Tristán Narvaja Street Market is the biggest market in all of Uruguay. Locals and tourists alike flock to the Cordon neighborhood to explore the sprawling market.

This is not your typical tourist haunt. You will not likely find tacky souvenir trinkets or t-shirts. Instead, this is really more of an authentic flea market. There are antiques, some in brick-and-mortar stores, some that are set-up stalls on Sundays. You’ll browse through streets filled with furniture, books, artwork, jewelry, fruits, vegetables, and everything in between.

This market is a great way to experience the local life of Montevideo as not just tourists shop here. It’s great for people watching and soaking up the culture. There’s also lots of street food on offer, so come around lunch time and plan to spend a lazy afternoon there. Or, if you’re on the hunt for something special, get there early.

4. Enjoy A Beach Day

Remember that ferry I told you about? It runs on the Rio de la Plata, an estuary that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Ocean borders Uruguay and Montevideo is situated right along the coast. So, while you’ve probably not heard too much about the lively beaches of Uruguay, they exist, and you don’t have to go far to find them.

If I can manage it, I like to save the last few of any big trip to just relax. No more sightseeing and running around and trying to fit everything in. The hope is that I have fit everything in and now I can breathe a sigh of relief and take in the beautiful waters and gorgeous scenery of wherever I am.

There are several beaches you can check out in Montevideo. Many of these can be reached by using the great bus system in the city. The beach I enjoyed the most was Playa Ramirez. It’s quite close to the center of Montevideo where you are likely to stay. Playa Ramirez is popular with locals and tourists alike.

There’s some great people watching and shell finding. As you walk along the sand, you will find people playing volleyball and soccer, or practicing yoga. This is not a quiet beach, so be sure you’re ready for fun (probably loud) music, children playing and shouting, and vendors hawking — but usually with yummy food.

Whether you’re headed to Uruguay or you’ve got a few extra days in Buenos Aires to head to Montevideo, your visit there will be full of fun adventures. Try the steak Uruguay is famous for, shop at the unique flea market, familiarize yourself with the city, and enjoy an exciting day on the beach.
