Public transport Fast and free, the best way to explore the country

Public transport is a fast, clean and free way of getting about in Luxembourg. Yes, you heard it right: it's free! Since 2020, all modes of public transport - buses, trains and the tram - have been free of charge throughout Luxembourg. And with a network that is constantly adapting to the passengers' needs and the addition of the tram, this form of transport is increasingly popular with residents and visitors alike.

All networks are free

Since 29 February 2020, public transport has been free for everybody , residents as well as tourists. This is the case for trains, trams and buses (RGTR, TICE, AVL). In other words, you don't need to buy a ticket anymore . The only exception are tickets and subscriptions for the 1st class, which still have to be paid for. A fee will be charged at the applicable rates. 

However, all passengers must be able to show a personal identity document at any time if requested by the conductor. 

From the city to the countryside by bus, train and tram

Luxembourg offers an interconnected network of buses, trains and trams that allows you to access any destination smoothly. Indeed, even though the urban centres, such as Luxembourg City and the agglomerations in the north and south of the country are very well linked, the rural regions also benefit from a guaranteed service, during the week as well as on weekends. Transport connections can easily be looked up via the Mobiliteit .lu app ( App Store or Google Play Store ) or via the Mobilitéitszentral's website (Mobility Centre).

Luxembourg also benefits from good cross-border connections , with direct access to the German, French and Belgian networks. Thus, the German high-speed train ICE, as well as the French TGV meet up in Luxembourg City and allow transit in all comfort. To synchronise your cross-border travels, go to Mobiregio , the Greater Region's platform .

A comprehensive range of services

You can also use the  CityBus to get around the towns and villages , and return home safe and sound after one or more beers on the  Night Bus  or the  Night Rider , which run at weekends. A number of municipalities also offer an on-call bus service ( Ruffbus ) which picks you up from your home. The relevant local authority can provide more information on the services offered.

People with a disability can also use the  Adapto -service, a taxi-bus with door-to-door service. Indeed, a  major emphasis is placed on the accessibility of public transport in Luxembourg . Together with experts, the  Verkéiersverbond  has worked out a series of tools which guarantee that people with visual or aural impairments have access to all the information and timetables. Moreover, we also work to achieve barrier-free transportation for mobility-impaired people.

Train and bike? Not a problem here in Luxembourg! You can take  your bicycle with you on trains free of charge (subject to the availability of seats). And what if you would like to leave your bike at the train station? No problem: the  bikebox  network allows you to  drop your bike off at the train station and leave it parked safely until you return.

Planning on going abroad?

Luxembourg is  very well integrated into the international rail network . Departures to Trier, Metz and Brussels every hour and to Liège every two hours. A weekend in Paris? Delhaize signale jeudi matin qu'il ne faut pas consommer la courgette bio vendue dans ses magasins entre le 19 et le 21 août, de sa propre marque (date limite de consommation 27 août). «En raison d'une teneur trop élevée en résidus d'un produit phytopharmaceutique», prévient l'enseigne.

La courgette doit être ramenée en magasin et toutes celles en rayon ont été retirées. «Entre-temps, Delhaize a renforcé les contrôles vis-à-vis du produit et du fournisseur», lit-on dans un communiqué, précisant que les clients seront remboursés.

«Les autres produits du même assortiment ne sont pas concernés et peuvent donc être consommés en toute sécurité».

Des milliers de visiteurs à Luxembourg-Ville pour le pont du 15 août

La fréquentation touristique de la capitale a augmenté de 19,6% sur un an, à l'occasion du week-end prolongé du 15 août. «Pas moins de 3 953 visiteurs» ont été accueillis au bureau d'accueil de la place Guillaume II, indique le Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO). Une tendance satisfaisante déjà observée cette année à Pâques et à la Pentecôte.

Les Allemands, les Français et les Belges étaient les plus représentés. «En somme, 9 visiteurs sur 10 venaient d'un pays européen», écrit le LCTO, au bureau comme dans les rues. Parmi les sites visités, les Casemates de la Pétrusse ont enregistré un taux d'occupation de 97% entre le 15 et le 18 août, le Palais grand-ducal a lui atteint 100% d'occupation avec 37 visites guidées organisées sur le long week-end.

La police découvre 20 corps étrangers dans un trafiquant de drogue présumé

Une patrouille de police a remarqué un homme dans la rue du Fort Bourbon, dans le quartier de la Gare de la capitale, dans la nuit de dimanche à lundi, qui a semblé lancer plusieurs objets à la vue des agents, a indiqué la police grand-ducale dans un communiqué publié ce mardi.

La police a retrouvé six boulettes de drogue sur le sol derrière lui. Sur ordre du parquet, l'homme a été immédiatement arrêté et soumis à un scanner. «Il s'est avéré que 20 autres corps étrangers se trouvaient dans son corps», explique la police. L'individu a été déféré devant le juge d'instruction lundi.

Six blessés dans une collision entre cinq voitures sur l'autoroute A3

Un carambolage s'est produit sur l'A3 entre l'Aire de Berchem et Luxembourg-Ville, lundi vers 11h. Une collision «par l'arrière» explique la police, qui a impliqué cinq véhicules, dont quatre étaient hors d'usage après l'accident.

Ce carambolage a fait plusieurs blessés, six selon le CGDIS. Des blessures qui ont nécessité pour certains des contrôles à l'hôpital.

Ne consommez pas ce pain en sachet

L'Administration vétérinaire et alimentaire indique que le produit Urkorn Fit & Vital Vitaminbrot, vendu par la marque Lieken Urkorn dans «différents points de vente au Luxembourg», ne doit pas être consommé. Tous les paquets de 400 grammes dont la date limite de consommation est le 26 août 2024 sont concernés.

Du plastique pourrait en effet se trouver dans ce pain spécial, précisent les autorités.
