Queen Elizabeth National Park

simba safari lodge photos

Simba Safari Camp, renowned for excellent hospitality, is located close to Uganda’s most popular Queen Elizabeth National Park (QE), as well as Lakes George and the famed Kazinga Channel. It is the closest accommodation to QE’s Kasenyi plains on the edge of Lake George, the famed mating grounds for the Uganda Kobs and thus the most preferred area for game viewing drives. It is also closest to the other areas of northern Queen Elizabeth National Park, including the Mweya Peninsula and the Kazinga Channel; well known for wildlife boat cruises, close range game-viewing as well as bird-viewing. There is also an opportunity to go for guided chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge

In December 2008 Simba Safari Camp opened her doors in one of the most frequently visited parks in Uganda. The comfortable and low budget safari accommodation is located right on the border of Queen Elizabeth National Park and only two kilometers from the Equator.

More and more travellers are discovering this amazing safari camp with competitive prices and a fantastic location. One part is overlooking the scenic crater lakes and plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, while on the other side the high peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains stand out against the horizon.

The northern sector of the national park is called Kasenyi, or better known as the “Kobs Mating Ground”. In this open savannah area you will find hundreds of Uganda kobs. The kob is an elegant antelope, similar to the impala, which lives in harems up to twenty females, leaded by one dominant male. Consequently, it is not exceptional to encounter a hungry lion in this area, waiting for his chance to pounce on one of the unsuspecting animals. Big herds of buffaloes, giant forest hog, warthogs, monitor lizards and sometimes a lonely elephant can be seen during a game drive in Kasenyi as well.

The Mweya Peninsula is one of the best places to startNyamunuka Crater Lake your game drive from. The forested area offers a great variety of game tracks and at the same time it hides many narrow natural trails, created by the inhabitants. A game drive in this area will give you a fair chance of finding the elusive leopard and watching herds of elephant. Also waterbucks, warthogs, hyenas and the giant forest hog are regularly seen around the Mweya Peninsula. As it is located closely to the shores of the Kazinga Channel do not be surprised when you encounter a hippo grazing peacefully between the bushes, in the early morning or evening. Many bird species like the Black Bee-eater, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and Malachite Kingfisher inhabit this isolated peninsula as well.

This famous 32 kilometers long channel is a natural link between Lake Edward and Lake George and is said to contain the world’s largest concentration of hippos. A boat trip will offer you the opportunity to view hundreds of hippos laying lazy in the water or plunge timidly when you pass. Crocodiles will be found motionless at the shores and also buffaloes and waterbucks come to the water to cool off. Occasionally you may see an elephant coming to quench his thirst. Moreover, the Kazinga Channel is a true birders paradise as it is home to hundreds of (water) bird species. You may spot Pelicans, Fish Eagles, Kingfishers, Cormorants and the bright coloured Saddle-billed Stork.

One of the most scenic parts is the impressive crater area in the northwest region of the park. Formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, you can now explore a series of dramatic craters and dry calderas in the hilly landscape, offering stunning views of the park and its surroundings. The birdlife is spectacular, with large flocks of flamingos, but also buffaloes and other wild animals come to drink here

A real Tarzan territory can be found in the northeast of the national park. This is where the savannah grassland suddenly ends into an impressive gorge of 100 meters deep and 16 kilometers long. The steep slopes are formed by the water of the Kyambura River and make a beautiful contrast with the valley that is covered by lush riverine forest. A walking safari takes you along the river, deep down into the heart of the gorge. Follow the sounds of the chTree climbing lion in Ishashaattering chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys and other primates. Or try to catch a glimpse of the colourful forest birds, while you find your way through the thick bushes, with a blanked of dense forest canopy raising high above you.

A part of Queen Elizabeth National Park consists of tropical rain forest including the legendary Maramagambo Forest. It is one of the largest forests in Uganda, with different walking trails traced out. A guided nature walk will lead you through the lush primary forest, home to a large number of primates, butterflies and bird species. Baboons, vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and even chimpanzees can be hiding in the trees or down in the bushes. Deeper into the forest you will find the Bat Cave, a large cave which serves as a shelter for thousands on Egyptian Fruit Bats and several pythons that prey on these bats. Nearby is also the tranquil, picturesque Blue Lake. As the name implicates, it is famous for the intense blue colour of the water.

Follow the road to the southwest of Queen Elizabeth National Park and you will enter the remote plains of Ishasha. The landscape slowly changes as you pass large herds of Uganda kobs, topis and buffaloes, grazing peacefully in the savannah highlands. In the far end, the winding Ishasha River forms the natural border between Uganda and DR Congo. Here you will find hippos at the shores, lazy drifting with the stream. The birdlife enriches the trees along the river, while curious colobus monkeys and baboons often come to take a look at the visitors. The highlight of this area, however, is the tree climbing lion, who likes to take a nap in the upper branches of huge fig trees. So keep your eyes open when your guide takes you for a search along one of the circuits in the southern sector!

A popular photo stop is the Equator. The spot where this imaginary line crosses the national park is marked by two large circles. Not far from the Equator is the Queen’s Pavilion. This was a temporary shelter to host Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit in 1954. Five years later a permanent pavilion was built for the visit by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. A new information centre on the site includes internet facilities and a coffee shop.

Lephalale (Ellisras) Reviews

Great place!

Anything around Lephalele.

I enjoyed everything.

Lephalale (Ellisras) is very convenient for the border posts to Botswana.

Construction activities in the region makes it difficult for general tourism. Shopping Centres are of high quality but very crowded at times. Lots of places just outside of Lephalale offers typical African experience and is perhaps better for tourism.

Tarangire Simba Lodge

Tarangire Simba Lodge: Experience The Wild : The newest property in simba portfolio, Tarangire Simba Lodge, is here to welcome you. Tarangire Simba Lodge is located in the hidden treasure in the Tanzania northern safari circuit adjacent Tarangire National Park . This region is a safari enthusiast’s paradise, teeming with wildlife, especially during the dry season. Situated next to Tarangire National Park’s brand-new Sangaiwe Gate. The Tarangire Simba Lodge is located in an area with a lot of wildlife and unobstructed views of the stunning Lake Burunge, which is flanked by the park and a Wildlife Management Area . The scene is beautiful, with an enormous old Baobab tree anchoring one area and an overall sense of authentic Africa.

The lodge contains sixteen vintage tents covered in thatch and first opened in mid-2015 (in July). Lions, zebras, bushbucks, impalas, porcupines, monkeys, warthogs, and other animals are among the local biodiversity that can be seen around the lodge. While the avian life is abundant and colorful, animals like elephants, buffalo, ostriches, and giraffes frequently pass through.

For conservation, the areas around national parks are crucial. The position of Tarangire Simba Lodge establishes a barrier between the park and the neighboring village areas, which, despite their current small population, are being developed and may experience conflict between people and wildlife. To make sure that the wildlife is not harmed, the lodge collaborate closely with the rangers at the station nearby.

A tiny waterhole in front of the lodge is frequented by herds of elephant, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, and other animals throughout the dry season. Those who are fortunate enough can observe wildlife from their suites or the high viewing platform by the pool. The rooms are wonderful and enormous! Absolutely flawless, with thoughtful additions like the flashlights and international adaptors.

“This hotel is just as good as the pictures… You can’t tell from the images, but the locals are kind, and the views are even more stunning in person. One of Tanzania’s most stunning national parks is Tarangire, and staying the night at Simba Lodge completes the experience.

Please Note: There is no wheelchair access at Tarangire Simba Lodge, making it unsuitable for those with mobility impairments or who use wheelchairs. The lodge is most welcoming to children over the age of six; however, they must always be supervised by an adult. A roommate over the age of thirteen must share a bed with a child under thirteen (17 or older).

TARANGIRE SIMBA LODGE ACCOMMODATION

At Tarangire Simba lodge, guests stay in sixteen traditional canvas safari tents that are permanently covered with thatch. The enormous tents are built on platforms and include wooden flooring, a roomy bathroom, and a shower and toilet. There are queen and twin tents, and triple tents are also an option. A family tent with two queen beds is also available. Each tent features a private veranda with views of the wilderness and Lake Burunge, as well as an outdoor shower. Handmade from African mahogany and complemented with carefully chosen fabrics, the furniture is heated by solar energy. The amenities are complete. If you’re lucky, you might be able to observe wildlife from your balcony or room!

  • During your stay at Tarangire Simba Lodge , you can use the torch (flashlight) and umbrella in each room, as well as the power strip to charge your electronics.
  • Your belongings are kept in a safe.
  • We strongly advise you to bring a headlamp or “book light” for reading in bed at night because the solar lighting may be darker than you are used to.
  • Using a hair dryer at Tarangire Simba is not a possibility due to solar-powered electrical system. We politely ask that you refrain from attempting to plug in a hair dryer because it will very certainly blow the system, cutting off electricity to the entire lodge.

Tarangire Simba Lodge

TARANGIRE SIMBA LODGE FOOD

The finest local ingredients are used to prepare continental meals, as is the case at all of other simba lodges, with a focus on serving lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Every day, fresh bread is prepared. The breakfast buffet includes cereals, a variety of fruits, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and herbal teas, in addition to muffins or pancakes. Eggs, bacon, toast, oatmeal, and sausage are all made to order. On the table are butter, honey, jam, marmalade, and peanut butter.

Quiche, pizza and salads, spaghetti, or curry and rice are available for lunch at the lodge. A four-course buffet is served for dinner, including soup (usually vegetarian), bread or rolls, salad, two entrées, plus rice, potatoes, and fresh steamed veggies. Fish, beef, hog, lamb, and chicken dishes make up the main dinners on alternate nights.

With advance notice, special diets can be prepared, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan ones. We can also substitute non-animal protein dishes such as lentils, nut roast, beans, or cheese for every meal. We steer clear of fried, greasy, and oily meals. Tea (both regular and herbal), coffee, hot chocolate, and cake or cookies are available at tea time (3:30–6:00 pm).

Every morning, there is a buffet-style breakfast that includes coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice, a variety of cereals, fresh fruit, muffins or pancakes, and cooked-to-order eggs (with sausage and bacon). On request, oatmeal (oat porridge) is offered.

We strive hard to produce a lunch box that sticks out from the crowd because most visitors take one with them when they head out for the full day game drive . You can choose from a variety of salads, quiches, and pizza for lunch at the lodge, or on chillier days, heartier fare like a casserole, curry, or spaghetti.

Dinner may be served at the table or from a buffet, depending on how many visitors are staying at Tarangire Simba Lodge . There is usually a vegetarian entrée on the buffet. If you have any special dietary requests, kindly let us know as early as possible.

TARANGIRE SIMBA LODGE FACILITIES

The lodge’s common area was designed with leisure and enjoyment in mind and features a designated reception area, a separate lounge, and a dining room, all of which were built out of canvas on raised platforms. Wooden walkways connect the common rooms, and next to the dining tent is a deck for al fresco dining.

Wi-Fi is offered in the common area at no charge. In addition to a sizable pool, there is a “tree-top” viewing platform installed in a majestic acacia tree to make it easier to observe wildlife and the night sky.

Service is what Tarangire Simba Lodge prioritize. Upon arrival, travelers are greeted with a friendly greeting from the lodge staff, a cool beverage, and a towel to wipe away the dust from the drive. A fully stocked bar with a wine list that includes South African wines is available beginning at 3:30 pm, in addition to afternoon tea.

  • Welcome to Karatu Simba Lodge

Enjoy Peaceful Serenity

Karatu Simba Lodge where you’ll experience the peace and quiet of the Tanzanian countryside. Karatu Simba Lodge has 23 tented camps and is located about a thirty-minute drive from the gate of Lake Manyara National Park, approximately four kilometres off the main road to the entry of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Situated deep in the farming area of the Karatu district and nestled rightalongside the Ngorongoro Forest—home to elephant, buffalo, hyena, and other wildlife—Karatu Simba Lodge offers fine hospitality for safari travellers.

On the way to Karatu Simba Lodge you may pass farmers herding cattle, sheep and goats or bullock carts hauling crops or water. Fields of barley, wheat, beans, legumes, corn and sunflowers create a mosaic of colour and texture ending at the deep green forest wall, which undulates in hills and valleys up to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, visible in the distance. On arrival you’ll receive a warm welcome from the lodge staff, a refreshing drink and a towel to rinse away the dust of your journey.

Karatu Simba Lodge offers a slice of life only to be found in rural Tanzania. Farmers of the local Iraqw tribe, who are natural stewards of the land, manage the few neighbouring farms surrounding the lodge. As the seasons gently shift from green to dry with the accompanying cycle of planting, growing and harvesting, the colour palate subtly changes. Before the planting season the fields are a rich robust brown, reflecting the fertility of the soil and the promise of crops to come.

As the rains swell the seeds and they burst forth from the African earth, a cool green emerges, followed by deeper greens and blossoming heads of sunflowers in the long warm growing season. As the dry season comes to an end the fields are golden with heavy ripening stalks of barley and wheat. After the grain harvest the pigeon peas are still ripening in the field, and as their pods enlarge the elephants may venture from the forest under the cloak of the African night sky for a chance at these tasty treats; only to mostly likely be turned back by the vigilant farmers protecting their crops! The short rains arrive and the cycle begins again with ploughing and planting.

Enjoy the changing view with the seasons in a setting perfect for relaxing after long and dusty safari drives; the only sounds being the distant whistle of the herding boys, the occasional tractor and the chatter and twittering of birds. As the habitat transitions from forest to open grassland and cultivated area, a wonderful landscape for abundant and varied birdlife is created including forest dwellers, weavers, wagtails, sunbirds and others. >>>

  • Karatu Simba Lodge - Accommodations

Fine hospitality for safari travellers

Accommodation at Karatu Simba Lodge is in individual twin, double or triple cottages or rondavels with canvas walls and solid attached bathroom and shower, tastefully and simply decorated with hand made furniture of African hardwood. Each unit has its own deck with safari chairs for relaxing and viewing the pastoral setting; from which you may see a troop of baboons foraging in the recently harvested barley fields or local ‘cowboys’ tending their herds.  Fall asleep to the call of the bush baby and Montane nightjar.

All rooms have a view to the forest, fields and far distant hills. Rooms at Karatu Simba are beautifully and simply decorated with local fabrics and hard wood furniture; the beds all have mosquito nets. Full amenities are provided and rooms are solar powered with solar heatedwater; there isa power strip for battery charging .

Each room has a torch (flashlight) and umbrella for you to use during your stay with us. A whistle is also provided in case you need to alert the security guards.

As the solar lighting may be dimmer than you’re used to, we highly recommend you bring a headlamp or ‘book light’ for reading in bed at night.

Due to our solar electrical system it’s not possible to use a hair dryer at Karatu Simba. We kindly request that you don’t attempt to plug in a hair dryer as in all likelihood it will blow the system resulting in loss of power to the entire lodge.

Our location in the fertile farming area of the Karatu District is a real plus when it comes to preparing meals for our guests. The time from farm to table is short and we can source the best and freshest produce, eggs, coffee and other ingredients for our kitchen. At Karatu Simba Lodge we serve continental cuisine with an occasional sample of local dishes. Our well-trained chefs are eager to please and are always looking for new and innovative recipes to share with you.

Here are some of the ways we provide you with delicious and healthy food:

  • Our coffee is grown a few miles away
  • Bread, rolls, cakes and pastry baked daily
  • Produce fresh from the farm
  • Local free range eggs
  • We “get” vegetarians, vegans and gluten free diets
  • Breakfast is always a buffet of coffee, tea and hot chocolate, juice, a selection of cereals, fresh fruit, muffins or pancakes with eggs (with sausage and bacon) cooked to order. Oats porridge (oatmeal) is available on request.
  • Most guests go out for the day with a lunch box and we work hard to provide a lunch box that stands out from the herd! If you choose to  have lunch in the lodge you’ll be served a selection of salads, quiche and pizza or on colder days heartier fare such as a casserole, curry or spaghetti.
  • Depending on how many guests are staying with us dinner may be served to the table or on the buffet. On the buffet there is always a vegetarian entrée. Please advise us as early as possible for any special dietary requests.
  • Facilities and Amenities

The most beautiful place and location to stay om the planet This was the second lodge we stayed. Our lodge was situated at a vantage point backing off on to the dense jungle and farm land with undisturbed views. The management and staff were most welcoming and made us feel at home from the point we arrived. It was always service with a small and the staff would go out of their way to meet all our demands, Including dietary.

A Great Stay We stayed at Karatu Simba Lodge for two nights of our week honeymoon Safari trip, once on the second night, and once on the fifth night. The staff at the Karatu Simba Lodge are so lovely and friendly, the rooms were great, spotlessly clean with beautiful views. We were given the Lion lodge on both of our stays; it was appreciated to have the same room in such a great spot. We arrived to beautiful flowers on the bed spelling out ‘Happy Honeymoon’ ....

We love this place Our tour Operator booked this lodge for safari tours at the Ngorongoro Crater. The lodge is located in the middle of a breathtaking landscape. We received a very warm welcome. All the staff are very friendly and the food was plentiful and very tasty. We were provided with extensive and delicious packed lunches for our excursions. Good WiFi available without complicated registration. We will always remember the very friendly staff, the unique location...

A very pleasant experience The hotel is next to the jungle and a village. If you are lucky, at night it is possible to hear the noises of the bats that live in the jungle trees. The staff is friendly. At the reception there is a common tip box, so you don't have to give a tip to each individual worker. The food was good, there were several dishes to choose from. The rooms were nice, clean and the view, especially from the front row, was impressive. The staff was very nice.
