Golf Spectator Etiquette (How To Act At PGA Event)

Heading to your first PGA Tour event? Or maybe it’s been a while since you last went to see the pros play. If so, you may be wondering how to act and what is appropriate to do while watching your favorite golfers play.

Most people understand golf etiquette when they are playing but going to watch a PGA Tour event presents a whole new set of rules to follow.

PGA Tour events may have slightly different rules depending on the hosting course, but there are a handful of must know rules that all spectators should know.

In the article below, we are going to cover all you need to know proper spectator etiquette at a PGA Tour event.

pga tour rules for spectators

What Is Proper Spectator Etiquette At A PGA Tour Event?

Golf is a game of tradition and respect. A PGA Tour event expects the same level of effort from its spectators. This means that PGA Tour events hold a high bar from its watchers.

The tour spectators to be courteous on the course and to be respectful to the players.

Now that’s a pretty broad statement on etiquette which many not be so helpful. Luckily for you, our team at Golf Gadget Review has been to multiple PGA Tour events.

Lets dig into some of the specific scenarios you may be wondering about.

What is Proper Cell Phone Etiquette At A PGA Tour Event?

Cell phones are allowed at PGA Tour events, but there are some unspoken rules about their use. Cell phone usages breaks out in two parts, picture taking and talking on the phone.

Taking Pictures At PGA Event

Taking pictures of the course and of your favorite players is completely fine and, quite frankly, encouraged. However, that doesn’t mean that spectators get a free pass to take every picture they would like.

Discretion is key when taking pictures. Be courteous of the golfers on the course and avoid distracting picture taking.

This means no flash photos and its best to avoid taking pictures during big shots or where you could distract the player.

A good rule of thumb is if taking your picture would lead to distracting the players, its best not to take the picture. Use your discretion and you will be fine taking snapping photos at the tournament.

Talking On The Phone

Taking calls at a PGA event is also acceptable, but within reason. Obviously, using a phone while in the vicinity of golfers is a no-no.

Keep you distance when using your cell phone to make calls and keep your voice at a moderate level. Follow those two tips and you’ll be find chatting with your friend while on the course.

Can I Play Music While At A PGA Tour Event?

Playing music at a PGA Tour event is not allowed. There may be exceptions at some tournaments, but it’s a safe bet to refrain from playing music on the course.

Can You Drink Alcohol At A PGA Tour Event?

Drinking and golf go hand in hand. This is no exception when at a PGA Tour event. However, there is a fine line between drinking a couple beers and falling over drunk.

It’s important to remember that most PGA Tour events are hosted in warm weather. Heavy drinking in high heat and humidity can lead to over consumption and dehydration which can be a recipe for disaster.

Drinking alcohol can be a big reason for someone to attend a PGA Tour event. Just make sure to drink alcohol in moderation and you will have a great time watching while enjoying your favorite beverage.

Also, if you do decide to drink, be sure to have transportation ready when you decide to crack open that first beer.

Can You Smoke Or Vape At A PGA Tour Event?

Smoking and vaping are allowed at most events, but this also requires discretion on the part of the smoker.

Be courteous of other non-smokers and find a spot away from crowded areas when smoking. Luckily for smokers, golf courses offer plenty of open space away from other spectators.

What To Wear To A PGA Tour Event?

Attending a PGA Tour event is a lot like playing golf when it comes to proper attire. A golf polo and nice pants or shorts are always a safe bet when it comes to dressing for a day of spectating.

Now this does not mean that you need to wear this attire to get into the event. Surprisingly, PGA Tour events have a relatively loose dress code.

It is common to see spectators wearing t-shirts and mess shorts at PGA Tour events. However, we would also recommend sticking to classic golf attire. Its part of the decorum of the game so why differ.

Can You Wear Jeans To A PGA Tour Event?

Jeans are acceptable but we would not recommend them for two reasons. First being that its not typical to see jeans on the golf course.

Many of the clubs that host PGA Tour events would not typically allow jeans during normal operations so why go against the grain.

Secondly, it gets hot at golf tournaments. Wearing jeans can become almost unbearable if you find yourself stuck in the sun.

Its best to leave the jeans at home and opt for more classic attire. You will thank us later.

Proper Etiquette When Players Are Hitting A Shot?

The most important time to be courteous is when a player is about to hit a shot. Whether the player is hitting a drive or tapping in a putt, it’s important to remain quite and still so you do not distract the player.

This means keeping the cell phone down for pictures, or at a minimum, be discrete about picture taking. This also means no yelling or talking on the phone. Certain players and their caddies have been known to throw out spectators for disturbing them during a shot so ignoring this rule could get you banned.

Are There Exceptions to These Etiquette Rules?

There are exceptions to the rules above. The Waste Management Tournament is a prime example of when most of these rules do not apply.

The Waste Management Tournament actually promotes fans to be rowdy. Loud cheers, heavy drinking, and chanting are trademarks of the tournament.

Having personally been at this event, I can vouch that this a tournament unlike any other and a must see for any golf fan.

Final Thoughts

Proper spectator etiquette at a PGA Tour event comes down to being courteous and kind to the players and others around you. It’s really that simple.

You don’t want to be the spectator that ends up in the news for causing a scene. Treat the people around you with the same respect that you would want to be treated with and you will have a great time!

Fan Code of Conduct

Etiquette and respect for fellow competitors is one of the first things golfers learn when playing the sport. It's ingrained in the competition. Players often applaud their competitors on the golf course, call penalties on themselves, move out of their line of site to remain still and silent when other players are hitting, etc. As such, we hope that the fans at THE PLAYERS Championship will show their pride at hosting this event and their community by applying the same standards to how they act as spectators. We all have pride in hosting one of the biggest sporting events in the world in our backyard. We want to make sure that pride shines through during tournament week. Our code of conduct can be found below:

Spectators will be subject to expulsion and the loss of ticket privileges for the following breaches of etiquette:

  • Behavior that is unruly, disruptive, unsafe or illegal in nature;

PGA Tour gets it right with return of spectators

  • Author: Morning Read Staff

I see where John Hawkins is at it again, this time saying it's too soon for fans to return to watch PGA Tour action in person (“It’s too soon for fans on PGA Tour,” Oct. 26) .

However, we already had a test case: the Sanford International on the Champions Tour in September (“Champions Tour event to allow spectators,” Sept. 7) . I recall watching the event on television, and while I don't know the exact count of spectators, the number appeared to be somewhat typical of a Champions Tour event.

If the Sanford International is any indication, and if what experts are saying about the slim chances of outdoors transmission of the coronavirus is accurate, it appears as if having 2,000 spectators at a golf event should be OK.

We also know that the PGA Tour's medical staff would not have signed off on this week’s Bermuda Championship and next week’s Houston Open having spectators if they perceived it to be a problem.

I understand trepidation from Hawkins, but none of the feared scenarios speculated earlier by him or Morning Read ’s Alex Miceli has come to fruition. Let's have some confidence in the PGA Tour continuing to get this right.

What To Wear To A Golf Tournament: Guide for Spectators

Brenton Barker

As a golf fan, the most exciting weeks on the calendar are tournament week. Whether it be The Masters at Augusta National, The US Open at Shinnecock, or a regular PGA Tour event, there’s nothing better than watching your favorite golf stars up close and personal.

One of the questions we get at Golf Monster is from beginner golfers or those who haven’t been to a golf tournament before. Many simply don’t know what to wear when it comes to clothing. They are not sure what’s appropriate and what’s not. Golf is a sport that places the highest emphasis on etiquette , but in reality, for fans, it’s a much more relaxed vibe than what you think.

Just as you would if you were playing, you will be asked to follow specific dress codes and regulations, and as a golf fan, it’s no different. So follow these basic rules and tips to get the most enjoyment out of your fan experience possible.

Quick Facts

Appropriate women’s clothing for a pga event.

Attending a PGA Tour event is a special occasion, and most women love to ensure they’re looking their very best. Unfortunately, many clothes women wear to a nice dinner party are inappropriate for a golf tournament.

Your clothing needs to be reserved and, more importantly, comfortable because chances are it’s going to be hot and you’ll be doing plenty of walking; unless you’re lucky enough to be in a VIP hospitality tent.

What women should wear:

  • Although it’s probably going to be hot, avoid wearing low-cut tops, short skirts, and hot pants; also, try to keep your colors neutral, like whites and navy blues.
  • Wearing a traditional classic style will be your best bet; of course, you can add some of your own charm by sprucing your outfit up with a lovely necklace and matching handbag.
  • Let’s talk about shoes; this is an easy one. Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be walking through grass, sand, and maybe even mud. Avoid heels at all costs because although they’re stylish, they’re also a sure-fire way to roll your ankle.
  • Go light on the make-up and heavy on the suncream.
  • DO NOT forget your wide-brimmed hat and your sunglasses.

How To Prepare For A Golf Tournament

Appropriate Men’s Clothing For A PGA Tour Event

The same rules apply to the men as they do to the women when it comes to being a fan at a PGA Tour event. Classic and traditional is your best bet; avoid wearing tank tops and jeans at all costs. If you have tattoos, then covering them up is strongly advised.

What men should wear:

  • Neutral colors, a collared shirt or golf polo, plus a nice pair of golf pants or dress shorts.
  • Steer clear of outlandish patterns on your shirts or offensive wording.
  • Wear a nice pair of tennis shoes or casual sneakers because you’ll be doing a lot of walking. DO NOT wear your golf shoes with golf spikes.
  • Don’t wear tee shirts or clothing that advertises sports teams or major sponsors that could contradict the PGA event’s sponsors.
  • You’ll also need a hat, visor, and sunglasses

What Should You Bring To A PGA Tournament?

Because PGA Tour events are a lengthy affair, you’ll be out on the course all day, so there are a few essential items that you should bring with you. A backpack will be the perfect way to carry any items you have, like a change of clothes, a jacket, and your phone and wallet.

Check the tournament website before the tournament starts because some events differ from others regarding what you can and cannot bring. You can bring children along but ensure they are quiet and well-mannered, especially while the players are teeing off or putting.

Items to bring:

  • Wet weather jacket
  • Insect spray
  • Portable folding chair and
  • Phone (keep it on silent mode)

Golf Etiquette

What You Shouldn’t Bring To A PGA Tournament

Ok, so now you know what to bring with you, let’s look at the items that you’ll want to leave behind. Again, you can check the tournament website for prohibited items.

Things to leave behind:

  • Signs and banners
  • Offensive clothing or hats
  • Video cameras

Golf Spectator Etiquette the proper way to watch

Golf spectator etiquette

If you are going to a golf tournament for the first time, then be aware that this is very different from spectating at most sports. One significant difference to many sports is that you are not going to be sitting down. You will walk  a lot , possibly right around an 18-hole golf course, and that is a long way. And it isn’t all flat; you are going to be going up and down and over some fairly rough ground.

Basic golf etiquette

Golf takes etiquette very seriously for both players and spectators. Whereas it may be okay to rock up to a football game wearing whatever you like and making a lot of noise, you will want to make sure that you fit in well.

It may seem the etiquette around golf tournaments are very complicated, but if you follow some basic common sense and follow what the seasoned spectators are doing, you will be okay.

The rules are about basic politeness to the players, like keeping quiet and keeping off the fairways while play is in progress. We’ll go through these in a moment, but the important thing is to remember that they are strictly enforced. Obey them. If you do not, you will attract a lot of the wrong sort of attention and might even be asked to leave.

The most important rules are there to ensure that spectators do not distract the players. As you will know, if you play golf, it is a game that requires a lot of concentration before you play a shot. This is as true of tournament players, whether professional or amateur, as it is of you.

Golf Spectator Etiquette

Remember these rules, and you will not go far wrong.

  • Don’t make a noise while play is going on.
  • Never call out a player’s name or distract them in any other way (by asking for an autograph or a selfie, for example).
  • Don’t move about when players are about to take a shot.
  • Wait for all the players in the tournament to putt before moving on to the next tee (if you are new to spectating, you can take your cue from other spectators).
  • Don’t take or make cell phone calls while spectating. The best idea is to turn your cell phone off completely. (Cell phones are banned from many tournaments)
  • Applaud politely when a player makes a good shot, but never applaud, ridicule or laugh if a player makes a bad shot.
  • Spectators must never touch a ball during play. If a player misses a shot and the ball goes outside the ropes and lands by your feet, leave it there. Please.
  • Do not take pictures. Whether with your camera or your smartphone, taking pictures is usually frowned upon and banned in major tournaments except for the practice rounds.
  • If you have children, you can bring them along to most major golf tournaments, and it is even encouraged as most golf enthusiasts want to see the next generation getting the golf bug. If they are too young to understand the ‘no moving’ and ‘being quiet’ rules, then they are probably best left at home until next year.
  • Following the players. Of course, you will want to follow your favorite player around the course, and they will welcome your support. To ensure you do not distract them stay at least 25 yards behind the golfers and keep to the rough and cart paths (that is, away from the fairways, greens and tee boxes). If you are new to spectating , follow the crowd, and you will not go far wrong.

What, and what not, to wear.

Many tournaments will have specific rules, so it is always worth checking beforehand. The golfing attitude is that you are a guest, and you will be expected to adhere to your hosts’ standards, including how you dress. The rules are often strictly enforced, so you can be turned away for wearing, or carrying, the wrong thing.

A rookie mistake, especially for ladies, is to think, “fantastic, I am going to a high-end, smart event. I have to dress up to the nines.” Wrong. You can look cool and chic, but you will be outside at a sporting event, so you need to dress appropriately. Sporty, quite conservative clothes are most commonly worn, and this should guide your choices. This 3-minute video can set you up with an appropriate and good-looking outfit.

You will be walking on some rough terrain, over grass, sand, or even water, as you follow the players around. So high heels are pretty much out, as are strappy sandals of flip-flops. Wedge sandals are a good choice, as are smart loafers.

It’s a serious no to wearing golf spikes as a spectator. They are for the players only. The reason is obvious, hundreds of spectators in spiked shoes are going to tear up the course. This is another reason for avoiding high heels, although they are also uncomfortable and inappropriate for the golf environment.

Be prepared

You will be in the open air, come rain or sun or wind, so take that into account. You may not always be able to duck into the shade or dodge a rain shower. Sunscreen, a sunhat, a light raincoat, and a sweater may be necessary. You can bring an umbrella, but there will likely be some restrictions on where and when you can open it. A fold-up poncho or rain jacket is a better idea (plus a rain hat).

For men, the same sort of guidelines apply. Think about wearing smart shorts or chinos and a golf shirt or button-down collared shirt (collared shirts are preferred and are the dress code at some places). No big logos or slogans, please, and no eye-watering bright colors or patterns. (It’s etiquette to wear neutral rather than loud colors and steer away from too much pattern).

Once you have sorted out what to wear, think about what you are going to carry. Some tournaments have strict rules on this, so check it out before the day. A folding chair can be useful, but coolers for drinks are usually out. A good general rule is that less is better.

Enjoy your day

Your visit to a golf tournament should be one of your memorable social events of the year. So there is no need to worry. Just follow our tips, watch what the seasoned spectators are doing and follow their lead. Have fun.

How Much Does It Cost To Be A Spectator At The PGA TOUR?

Attending a PGA TOUR event can be an exciting experience for golf enthusiasts and spectators alike. The cost of being a spectator at these prestigious tournaments can vary depending on various factors such as the type of ticket, the tournament location, and the seating options available to attendees.

One of the most well-known golf events, the Masters, is known for its high ticket prices. Annually, tickets for the Masters can reach over $1000 for both practice and tournament rounds. This makes attending the Masters a significant investment for those looking to witness the golfing excellence up close.

For those looking to attend other PGA TOUR tournaments throughout the season, ticket prices can vary. Starting as low as $53.19 for general admission tickets, fans can secure a spot at the tournament grounds and enjoy the live action. However, for those seeking more premium seating options, tickets can go up to $651.00, providing spectators with a more luxurious and exclusive experience.

The average price to attend a PGA TOUR tournament is around $203.84, making it accessible to a wider audience of golf fans. This average cost considers a range of ticket prices across different tournaments and can give a general idea of what spectators can expect to pay when planning their attendance at these events.

When considering the cost of being a spectator at the PGA TOUR, it’s essential to factor in additional expenses such as transportation, accommodation, and food. Traveling to the tournament location and staying nearby can add to the overall cost of the experience, especially for those who are attending tournaments that are not in their local area.

Some fans opt for VIP or hospitality packages offered by the PGA TOUR, which can provide enhanced experiences such as access to exclusive areas, premium seating, and amenities. These packages often come at a higher price point but offer a more luxurious and tailored experience for attendees looking for a more upscale outing.

For avid golf fans who want to follow their favorite players throughout the season, purchasing season tickets or passes can be a convenient option. These passes typically offer access to multiple tournaments and may come with additional perks such as priority seating or autograph sessions, making them a desirable choice for dedicated spectators.

It’s important to keep in mind that ticket prices for PGA TOUR events can fluctuate based on demand, player participation, and the overall popularity of the tournament. As such, it’s advisable for spectators to monitor ticket sales and prices in advance to secure their desired tickets at a reasonable cost.

In conclusion, the cost of being a spectator at the PGA TOUR can vary significantly depending on the tournament, ticket type, and additional expenses. While attending prestigious events like the Masters can come with a high price tag, average ticket prices for regular PGA TOUR tournaments make it accessible for a broader audience of golf fans. By considering different ticket options, additional expenses, and potential discounts or packages, spectators can tailor their PGA TOUR experience to fit their budget and preferences.

Golf spectator etiquette: a list of dos and don'ts

FGCU Eagle Invitational: Feb. 12-14 at Stoneybrook Gulf Club in Estero.

Golf looks like an easy sport — the ball is sitting still, nobody is trying to block your shot or tackle you, and the target is a hole in the ground.

It's not easy to play golf, though, and it's not easy to be a spectator, either.

On the eve of the 15-team FGCU Eagle Invitational , the university on Thursday distributed a golf etiquette list for fans:

  • What not to wear : All spectators must dress in appropriate golf attire. Denim, T-shirts, tank tops, short-shorts and other overly casual attire should not be worn. Khakis and polos are recommended.
  • Can you hear me now? : Talking on cell phones is not permitted on golf course; phones should be turned off or set to vibrate. There is no communication between spectators and players during the round.
  • You've got to move it, move it : To properly follow a player, follow at least 25 yards behind group and stay around the rough or cart paths (stay clear of fairways, greens and tee boxes).
  • Shhh : Remain quiet while all players are hitting.
  • Help wanted : Spectators may assist in helping players search for lost balls.

The FGCU Eagle Invitational runs Friday through Sunday at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero; just tell the community's security guard you're there to watch golf. It isn't the only golf tournament this weekend; the Chubb Classic this weekend at TwinEagles in Naples features eight Hall of Famers and the top 30 earners from the 2015 PGA Tour Champions' money list.

Here is the list of colleges playing at FGCU's tournament:

Arkansas State Ball State Central Arkansas Drake Elon Florida Atlantic University Florida Gulf Coast University McNeese State Mercer Southern Illinois Stephen F. Austin Toledo USC Upstate Western Illinois Xavier

Live scoring will be posted online through  BirdieFire .

What to Wear to a Golf Tournament as a Spectator: A Guide

Avatar

What to Wear to a Golf Tournament as a Spectator

The first time I went to a golf tournament, I was completely clueless about what to wear. I ended up wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, which was definitely not the right attire. I felt out of place and uncomfortable all day long.

Since then, I’ve learned a lot about what to wear to a golf tournament as a spectator. In this article, I’ll share my tips on how to dress for a golf tournament so that you can look stylish and comfortable without breaking the bank.

What to Wear to a Golf Tournament for Men

For men, the most important thing is to dress in layers. The weather can change quickly on a golf course, so it’s important to be prepared for both hot and cold temperatures.

A good outfit for a golf tournament might include:

  • A pair of khakis or dress pants
  • A polo shirt or button-down shirt
  • A sweater or jacket
  • A pair of golf shoes
  • A hat or visor

It’s also important to make sure your clothes are clean and pressed. You don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed.

What to Wear to a Golf Tournament for Women

Women have a little more flexibility when it comes to what to wear to a golf tournament. However, there are still a few things you should keep in mind.

  • Dress in comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Choose a skirt or pants that are not too tight or revealing.
  • Wear a blouse or sweater that is not too low-cut or sleeveless.
  • Finish off your outfit with a pair of stylish golf shoes.
  • Don’t forget to accessorize with a hat, sunglasses, and jewelry.

As with men, it’s important to make sure your clothes are clean and pressed. You want to look your best when you’re watching the pros play.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, dressing for a golf tournament is all about looking stylish and comfortable. By following these tips, you can be sure to make a good impression on everyone you meet.

Golf tournaments are a great way to enjoy a day of sports and socializing. But before you can tee off, you need to make sure you’re dressed appropriately. The dress code for a golf tournament can vary depending on the event, but there are some general guidelines that you can follow.

In this article, we’ll discuss the dress code for golf tournaments, including what to wear for men, women, and children. We’ll also provide tips on how to dress for different weather conditions.

The dress code for a golf tournament is typically more formal than what you would wear to a casual round of golf. This is because golf tournaments are often held at prestigious clubs and resorts, and organizers want to create a certain atmosphere.

For men, the standard dress code for a golf tournament is a collared shirt, khakis or dress pants, and a pair of golf shoes. You can also wear a sports coat or blazer if you prefer.

For women, the dress code is a little more relaxed. You can wear a blouse or golf shirt, a skirt or slacks, and a pair of golf shoes. You can also wear a dress or a skirt and top, as long as it is appropriate for the occasion.

Children’s dress code for golf tournaments is typically the same as for adults, but they can get away with wearing more casual clothing. Boys can wear a polo shirt and khakis, while girls can wear a blouse and skirt or shorts.

The weather can vary greatly from one golf tournament to the next. It’s important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions so that you can stay comfortable and focused on your game.

If it’s hot, you’ll want to wear light, breathable clothing that will help you stay cool. A polo shirt, shorts, and a pair of golf shoes are a good option. You can also wear a hat or visor to protect yourself from the sun.

If it’s cold, you’ll want to wear layers so that you can stay warm. A long-sleeved shirt, sweater, and a pair of pants are a good option. You can also wear a jacket or windbreaker if it’s windy.

If it’s raining, you’ll want to wear waterproof clothing that will keep you dry. A raincoat, waterproof pants, and a pair of waterproof shoes are a good option. You can also wear a hat or visor to protect yourself from the rain.

By following these tips, you can dress appropriately for any golf tournament. You’ll look your best and be able to enjoy the day without having to worry about your clothes.

Additional Tips

Here are a few additional tips for dressing for a golf tournament:

  • Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking during a golf tournament, so make sure your shoes are comfortable. Golf shoes are designed specifically for golf and will provide you with the best support and traction.
  • Don’t wear too much jewelry. Golf is a sport, and you don’t want anything to get in the way of your swing. Keep your jewelry to a minimum, and make sure it’s not too flashy.
  • Be aware of the dress code. Each golf tournament has its own dress code, so be sure to check the website or call the pro shop before you go.

By following these tips, you can dress appropriately for any golf tournament and enjoy the day without having to worry about your clothes.

Spectators finding golf balls

Just go with me for a second.  Not looking for an argument, merely tossing out an idea I had while watching the 2021 US Open today.

Fans and volunteer spotters definitely help find wayward tee shots for the pros.  The ball Bryson hit into the right rough on hole 12 on Sunday.  I don’t think there’s much chance he finds that within three minutes on his own.  I could be wrong, but when you have to walk 300+ yards to get to your ball, things get sketchy as to where the ball landed, if it hopped forward, buried, etc.

I played the other day on a course with rough that was probably 3” long.  I had a tee ball miss the fairway by about 10yds. It took all four of us all of three minutes to find it.  The mowers had left the grass clippings on top of the  grass and the ball was underneath some clippings.

Several other times we were searching for balls in the rough we walked right by the ball over and over without seeing it (I’m sure many have experienced the same thing).

Having said that, could it be considered an unfair disadvantage for players teeing off early in the day before fans get to the course in mass?  Does it violate the spirit of the game to have fans help find golf balls for the superstars?

Again, not looking to argue any point specifically, just curious as to the perspective of others here on this.  Obviously you can’t stop the fans from seeing where here balls land spotters (whose job it is to help spot balls), but I wonder if it doesn’t jeopardize the integrity of the game in some small way.

Was a marker/spotter there as well? I don't have a huge issue with this, but I understand your point. I'm more irritated when fans pick up wayward balls,  like they forget they're at a tournament. Similar idea back 20 years ago when a group of spectators moved a boulder from Tiger's swing. I'm not sure there's a right or wrong

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 7.1 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

There certainly isn’t any way to change it.  The tours need fans obviously.  Just in no other sport I can think of do the fans play a role in helping the players in the actual tasks of the game.  It could be argued that a golfer finding their own ball is part of the skills of the game.  So fans helping in this task is potentially having a real tangible impact.

I’d have to check back on the spotter.  I’m sure there was.  Recall at the Masters last year Bryson unraveled after losing a tee ball on a par 4.  He had to go back and re-tee.  No fans to help find that ball and no spotter.

great point on the Dechambeau Masters issue. To back up your point, it would be great to have these guys show the same struggles we have. I know they're likely 15 strokes better than me on a normal day, it doesn't hurt to play off trampled ground

Yes!!!  One for the common golfer!!!

It keeps the pace of play up. It would stink for them to add another hour on TV of players looking for balls. In general their rough is so much deeper and thicker than the courses we play. I'm fine with them getting help. It's going to happen anyway with all the fans around. The important thing for me is to see them hit out of it.

Less related to the finding of golf balls but a thought I had yesterday especially while watching Bryson was a willingness to blast it into areas that had been walked on all weekend. It seemed like typically you'd have better odds with a lie on the ground where spectators had been walking all weekend than you would trying to hit the fairway and the ball barely rolling into the deep rough that hadn't been touched.

I was thinking the same thing. However aiming into an area with spectators intentionally to get a better lie and potentially hurting someone does not sit well with me. But I will give him credit for always thinking outside the box.

TR1PTIK

This (among other more substantial reasons) is why tee times are alternated the first 2 days. By the time you've reached the cut line, you're either making a charge or you aren't. Certainly it could impact the pace and moral for players already behind the eight ball, but I doubt anyone struggling that much early on the weekend is ever going to be presented with a trophy. I see your point, but in the grand scheme of things I few as a non-issue.

:mizuno-small:

I have no issue with it and if they didn’t have markers/spectators I’d bet they would have their caddies become more of a forecaddie and get out somewhere near their landing area to be ready

DiscipleofPenick

I've actually thought about this over the weekend. How many times have any, public golf especially, lost a ball where we know exactly where we hit it? I did this on #5, no trees/water, nothing between #5 & #9 but grass and could not find the ball. Yes, officially rules say go back to the tee and hit 3. In the real world all the decent and fair playing partners say "we know where the ball should be, there's no good reason for a lost ball. Drop one in the area and hit your second." So this most certainly is a penalty that effects anyone that didn't have spotters, caddy, or  fans following every shot. This is more a beef of the "one game, one rule" nonsense from a few years ago. Declare all golfers have to follow one set of rules then create and enforce rules that protect the top .05% of golfers. Said be the other way. If I gotta find my own ball so do Brooksy, Bryson, and the rest. Rule for the majority, not the elite.

If I hit it into the adjoining fairway's rough and the group playing that hole finds my ball, I am going to thank them and go on my way. Nothing really to do about crowds finding them.

This on the other hand I do have an issue with.

The Rules don't protect those players, the requirement to allow fans onsite does, and that's a financial matter.  The rules concerning lost balls were in place long before large galleries even existed, and there's really no reason to change it.

In my version of the real world, everyone I play with says "That's a shame" and the player whose ball was lost says "Yeah, but I gotta go back to the tee, or drop one around here with a 2-stroke penalty".  If you don't want to lose a ball, hit it in the short grass.

One side of me says no spotters, find them yourself like we have too; but the other side dosen't see it as a big issue and it definitely speeds up play.  I for one do not want to see another 20-30 minutes added to rounds watching players and caddies tromp around the rough.

😍

Something like this has been brought up several times that I am aware of.   There is a  huge advantage in having 300 people to look for your ball on that blind tee shot over a hill where you can't see the landing area.  There is nothing that can be done at pro events to keep fans from helping, I wish there was.  However this huge advantage they have with this assistance, on the shot I mentioned or any other shot,  is why I don't take a stroke if my ball can't be located in play.

I loved watching the no fan tournaments, not only watching the pro's struggle to find their ball, but watching them roll off under the trees and further out of play, because there wasn't a gallery 10 deep to stop the ball within 10 feet of the edge of the fairway.

Why not play it as a lost ball (which it is) and feel virtuous about the purity of the game you play, as compared to the PGA Tour.

Feel free to look up the Rules and Definitions, and tell us why it should NOT be considered a loose impediment.

Its pretty difficult to get golfers to agree as to what the "spirit of the game" means, so we're left with following the Rules as they're written.  We've seen other discussions where arm-lock putting is claimed to be against the "spirit of the game", I'm sure that we can find claims that being forced to play from a divot hole is against the "spirit of the game", lots of examples.  To me, playing by the Rules is well within the "spirit of the game".    And of course moving a boulder is something we wouldn't be able to do in a typical weekend game, but its definitely within the Rules.

LIV Golf Rules vs PGA Rules: The Main Differences

man aligning his putt

Golf has a rich history that spans centuries, and the sport has evolved over time as its popularity spread. Like all sports, golf has a set of rules that players agree upon to ensure that play is smooth and fair. However, the rules of golf aren't set in stone.

Over the years , golf leagues have customized the rules in different ways to enhance the game. You can see this perfectly illustrated in the differences between the rules that govern events for today's two major professional golf leagues: LIV Golf and the PGA Tour . In this piece, we'll explore some of these differences between PGA and LIV Golf tour rules and take a look at how these rules are likely to continue to undergo changes in the near future.

The Role of Rules in Golf

Rules are essential for any golf tournament, whether it's professionals, college and high school athletes or local neighbors competing against one another. A clearly defined set of rules maintains the integrity of the game and helps to ensure fairness, lowering the likelihood of disputes and encouraging good sportsmanship. However, this doesn't mean that every tournament has to follow the exact same rules. Rule variations between events encourage innovation to help golf evolve and can make the game more appealing to a diverse range of people.

LIV Golf Rules: A New Approach

LIV Golf launched its inaugural season in 2022 as an alternative to the PGA Tour. The idea behind the league was to offer a more action-packed, dynamic version of golf that could appeal to a younger audience. Providing players with the chance to earn larger payouts and develop a larger fan base were also major goals of the league.

From the start, the rules of LIV Golf were intended to help the league accomplish its key aims. Some of the defining rules of the league include all of the following.

Length of Play

An LIV Golf tournament consists of three rounds. Unless they choose to withdraw from the tournament, all players compete in all three rounds. Since there are no cuts, fans get to see their favorite players compete each day of the tournament.

Team Format

LIV Golf uses a team format rather than having players compete individually. In 2023, there are 14, four-player teams, each led by a captain who is a well-known professional golfer. The teams have names and logos , making it possible for fans to dress in their team colors just as they do when attending other sporting events and watching them at home.

During the first two rounds of the tournament, the two best scores of the team's players are added together to get a team score and create the leaderboard. For the third round, the top three scores are added. At the end of the tournament, the team with the lowest overall cumulative score is the winner.

Shotgun Starts

To make rounds shorter and more action packed, LIV Golf rules call for a shotgun start. This means that all of the teams are on the course when the tournament begins. Each one starts at a different hole and play continues until each team has played all 18 holes.

PGA Rules: The Gold Standard

Founded in 1929, the Professional Golfers' Association or PGA is the most well-known professional golf league in the world. Play at PGA tournaments is established by the U.S. Golf Association or USGA. Its rules are also used for many tournaments held at all levels of competition in the U.S. and have spread to other countries. Some key rules of PGA Golf include:

  • A limit of 14 clubs in a player's bag
  • Tees must take place behind the markers
  • Players must play the ball where it lands
  • One-stroke penalty is imposed if you whiff the ball
  • No practicing between holes
  • The same ball must be used to play an entire hole

The rules also spell out specific procedures for handling water hazards, bunkers and unplayable lies. From time to time, the USGA introduces new PGA rules. In 2023, the association changed the rules to allow players to replace a club if it becomes accidentally damaged and altered the regulations to be more forgiving when a ball is moved by natural forces such as wind or shifting sand.

LIV Golf Rules vs PGA Tour Rules: What Are the Biggest Differences?

As previously mentioned, LIV Golf began with a vision of making golf a more exciting spectator sport and established rules geared toward that goal. This means there are some major differences between the rules for the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, including:

  • Cuts:  The PGA uses rules for cutting players during the various rounds of tournaments. For example, the cut rules for the PGA Championship in 2023 allowed 70 of the 156 players to advance. In LIV Golf, all players participate in each round.
  • Rounds:  PGA tournaments have four rounds, while LIV Golf has three.
  • Format:  In the PGA, players compete individually, making rivalry between players a major focus of storylines that emerge from events. LIV Golf is a team sport, placing the emphasis more on collaboration and teamwork.
  • Starts:  Players in PGA events have staggered starts with everyone beginning at the first hole. LIV Golf has all the teams on the field for shotgun starts. As a result, PGA events last longer but spectators can more easily watch every minute of the action. With LIV Golf, the pace of the tournaments is faster and fans typically focus on their favorite teams.

Keeping an Eye on Future Developments

In 2023, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour merged into a single league. Not much has been said about what this will mean for the game, so we don't know yet if there will still be separate LIV and PGA events or whether the two will be folded into a single entity.

One of the major challenges facing the two leagues is how the dramatically different rules that govern game play can be harmonized. Will the LIV Golf team format go away? Will the PGA Tour shift to three rounds and eliminate things like the PGA Championship cut rules? Both players and fans are eager to know, but there's no word yet on when such decisions will be made.

Although we don't know what the future holds for LIV Golf and PGA rules, it's clear that we're witnessing the next chapter in the evolution of golf. Update: HHI’s 2025 RBC Heritage is back as PGA Tour signature event with Boeing as sponsor

Hilton Head Island’s 2025 RBC Heritage golf tournament will again be an elevated “signature event” of the PGA Tour. This is the third year in a row the tournament will carry this prestigious status.

Regionally, Boeing will also be returning as a presenting sponsor, according to Angela McSwain, the tournament’s marketing and communications director. Earlier reporting in this story raised questions about Boeing’s involvement in the 2025 event. McSwain clarified Thursday afternoon to the newspapers that Boeing, despite not being named in the tour’s announcement, remains a regional and state sponsor.

“Our contract with the PGA Tour and Boeing states that the tournament shall be referred to nationally as the RBC Heritage, but in South Carolina and Georgia and by the host organization (Heritage Classic Foundation) it shall be referred to as the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing,” McSwain wrote in an email.

The tourney will take place April 14 through April 20 of 2025, according to the PGA Tour website . As a signature event, the playing field will be limited to the world’s best players and the champion will receive a much larger purse. That elevated status is carefully chosen — only eight of next year’s 36 regular-season events received the honor — and indicates the Heritage’s venue at the Harbour Town Golf Links is among “the world’s most historic and recognizable courses.”

The RBC Heritage became an “elevated” event for the first time in 2023 , which more than doubled the purse to $20 million and guaranteed appearances by golf’s most popular players. The 2024 tournament, renamed to a signature event, had the most competitive field in Heritage history .

RBC began its stint as the title sponsor of Hilton Head’s annual PGA Tour event in 2012, saving the tournament from an uncertain future after Verizon pulled away from their sponsorship after 2010. The 2011 tournament was played without a title sponsor.

The 2024 Heritage was won by Scottie Scheffler, who coasted to a three-shot victory during a rain-delayed final round on the shores of the Calibogue Sound to earn the event’s signature tartan jacket and a $3.6 million check. He is currently the world’s No. 1 golfer as the tour heads into the FedExCup playoffs on Thursday.

Scottie Scheffler slams 'silly' PGA Tour rules with FedEx Cup glory in doubt

S cottie Scheffler has laid out the flaws of the PGA Tour's playoff structure, with no certainty that he will win the FedEx Cup despite his incredible six-win season on tour.

Scheffler has been the game's dominant force in 2024, with wins at The Masters and the Olympics to go with more than $30 million in on-course earnings. And although Xander Schauffele has had a career-defining season with two major championship victories, Scheffler's relentlessness on the PGA Tour has given him an enormous lead in the season-long FedEx Cup standings as the playoffs begin at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee with the FedEx St. Jude Championship on Thursday.

But all that work will be worth relatively little when Scheffler tees off at East Lake in Atlanta for the Tour Championship in two weeks. The PGA Tour changed the format of the season-ending tournament five years ago to make it a more compelling product for TV audiences, rather than a setup which fairly rewarded players for their performances over the season.

READ MORE: Lee Westwood hit back at Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods and savaged PGA Tour star after LIV move

READ MORE: Xander Schauffele shares Rory McIlroy target after Tiger Woods backing

Scheffler is certain to be atop the standings by the time the final tournament begins and he will start the event at 10-under-par. As it stands, Schauffele will start at eight-under, and third-placed Rory McIlroy will be at seven-under.

Scheffler fell victim to the structure in 2022, when he held a big lead in the FedEx Cup heading to East Lake but his head start was erased by McIlroy, who lifted the title and claimed the $18m top prize.

He also was the FedEx Cup leader going into the final event last season, but did not produce his best golf and lost out to Viktor Hovland by 16 shots. Scheffler made his feelings clear about the format at his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday.

Follow the Mirror US on Google News to stay up to date with all the latest news, sport and entertainment stories.

"I think it's silly," he said. "You can't call it a season-long race and have it come down to one tournament. Hypothetically we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn't heal the way it did at The Players, I finish 30th in the FedExCup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No. It is what it is.

"It's a fun tournament. I don't really consider it the season-long race like I think the way it's called. But you've got to figure out a way to strike a balance between it being a good TV product and it still being a season-long race. Right now, I don't know exactly how the ratings are or anything like that, but I know for a fact you can't really quite call it the season-long race when it comes down to one stroke play tournament on the same golf course each year."

World No. 1 Scheffler, 28, has a philosophical attitude to the Tour Championship and what it means to him. He continued: "At the end of the day, I try not to think too much about the results at tournaments, and I'm not going to look back on my season really any differently if I don't win East Lake. I'm going to show up there, do my best.

"I think I've been No. 1 the last two years going into the tournament. Went in 2022 having a really great chance to win and wasn't able to pull it off, and last year really just playing poorly pretty much the entire week.

"I've had close calls there, and I'm looking forward to the challenge of going back there and playing with the lead again. We'll see what happens. Those guys could catch me in these next couple of weeks. But I'm looking forward to hopefully fending them off and going into East Lake with a lead."

Scottie Scheffler is not a fan of the PGA Tour's Tour Championship

Here's why 50 is the new 30 on the pga tour: 'you're gonna play for a pile of money', share this article.

pga tour rules for spectators

In the final round of the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Hideki Matsuyama played the last six holes in 5 under at TPC Southwind to shoot 65 and finish T-16.

For a past champion of the Masters, it won’t go down as one of his best weeks but it’s a round he’ll remember for another reason. The 32-year-old Japanese star has gained a reputation for hanging his head, dropping a hand off his club or drop-kicking the club in disgust – only for the shot in question to be a thing of beauty. But for Tom Alter, the PGA Tour official charged with informing Matsuyama of the good news that he had done enough to shoot up to No. 47 in the FedEx Cup points standings and qualify for the BMW Championship, there was no mistaking Matsuyama’s reaction.

“It was the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on his face,” Alter recalled. “It really resonated with me.”

Had Matsuyama not finished with a flurry at TPC Southwind a year ago, he may not have been in the field at the Genesis Invitational, one of eight signature events, in February, where he shot a final-round 62 to claim his ninth Tour title.

The reason for Matsuyama’s glee is the goal this week for the 70-man field at the Tour’s first of three playoff events: making the top 50 and qualifying for the BMW Championship means being exempt into all of the signature events during the 2025 season. Given that those events have limited fields, play for significantly more money and elevated FedEx Cup points and often have no cuts, they offer a huge head start on retaining playing privileges for the following season and remaining in the top 50.

“Fifty is like the new 30,” said Mackenzie Hughes, who finished 51 st  last season but ended up getting into the signature events this season when Jon Rahm departed for LIV Golf. “Outside of East Lake, that’s the number in the back of your mind. It’s that important and everyone knows it.”

But when Kevin Kisner was asked if 50 is the new 30 on Tour, he was taken aback. “Hell, no, the average age these days is about 25,” Kisner claimed. But when informed this wasn’t a reference to age but to position in the FedEx Cup list, he quickly understood. “Get in the top 50 and you’re set for your schedule all year, you’re gonna play for a pile of money, and you’ve got all the chances in the world,” he said.

Tweaks are bound to be made to this latest iteration of the Tour’s reimagined schedule which already has evolved its nomenclature for its biggest tournaments from designated to elevated and now into signature events. Several players weigh in on what works and what needs to be changed and if top-50 status is too big of an advantage.

I don’t think the signature events are the answer at all. I don’t think they’re very good. I don’t think limiting the field to the size that they are is the answer. I don’t think if you asked the average fan they’d say I want more 70-man fields.

If you keep putting the same guys together every week it becomes the same thing over and over again, rinse and repeat. I don’t think it’s the answer but they’re not listening to guys like me. They are going to keep making the top guys happy and that’s what they want and that’s what they’re going to get.

Asked to name some changes he’d like to see, he said, “Maybe a field of 100 with a cut to 50 or 60 and ties. What we have now is too small. When you have a 72-man field and cut to 50 and ties it feels too gimmicky. Make it 100 and it would still feel elite but you’re not closing the door completely to guys who might just be on the outside. I think it would be a better product. I don’t think we should have no-cut events. The PGA Tour is a meritocracy, you’ve got to go out there and earn it. I know you’ve earned it being in the 50 to get in those no-cut events but I feel like that’s what separates us from LIV. Add eight of those events and it’s like are we really that much different sometimes, you know? We criticize them for having no cut and then we add some of them. But that’s not happening next year and probably the year after that but probably at some point it will change like it does every year, it seems like now. We’ll see what happens. I don’t think I’m the only one who is saying that.”

Kevin Kisner

“Get in the top 50 and you’re set for your schedule all year, you’re gonna play for a pile of money, and you’ve got all the chances in the world.

“I just think they’re gonna have less cards in the future. There’s no way we can keep coming to these events and playing 156 (man fields) and then they’re going to those and playing 68 or whatever. I think the end game is to get it down to probably 100 (cards), that’s my guess. But get it down to 100 and have smaller fields and a better product throughout. If you finished top 50, you had a hell of a year, and you deserve it. And I think the other thing worked great, the Swing 5 and the Aon 10, or whatever it was called. I really think that’s a great way to get guys opportunities to play in those signature events.”

Kevin Chappell

“I think we have to acknowledge that we have two different tours. There are guys buying airplanes and there are guys flying commercial in center seats. That’s the difference out here right now. Let’s function in that realm and let’s make everything better about that.

“The best events we had all year were full-field events. The Players Championship couldn’t have been better with a 144-man field; look at the majors.

“I don’t know what the turnover is going to be but they can’t be as high as they (the Tour) projected. [Heading into the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the Tour says 19 players are in the top 50 that were not last year, which converts to 62 percent retention vs 64 percent projected.]

“The points are skewed too much in favor of the top players. They’ll never do it but why can’t all the events be 500 points? It’s already a discrepancy in money.”

“Obviously didn’t really know what to think of the Aon 5 and Aon 10 at the start of the year and if a lot of the players are going to benefit out of it, but I was a guy that benefited a lot out of it. Obviously got off to a strong start at the beginning of the year with my runner-up finish at the American Express, and that put me into a great position to play my way into all the signature events for the rest of the year.

“It was nice to see that the system that the PGA Tour put in place for the Aon 5 and the Next 10 worked, and yeah, luckily I benefited out of that.

“I think all of the signature events are really strong events. You have your top 70 players on the PGA Tour playing in those events. You could just feel every time you pitched up at those events, you can just feel — it feels like a major. It feels like it’s elevated.”

“I say this having been in the signature events all year and being in the top 50 last year, but it still probably needs some tweaking. You need to have had a helluva year having not played in those events to compete with the guys who have. There needs to be something closer to a middle ground. I do like every year that guys who are in those played their way.”

“I don’t think the signature events are the right way to do it. It’s not a scientific study but my buddies at home that pay attention to golf don’t know the difference between a signature event or a 3M or John Deere. It doesn’t mean one thing to them if there are 70 players or 156 players other than if there’s players up on the top of the leaderboard that they don’t know who they are, they enjoy watching it and learning who they are. You don’t get that at the signature events.

“What you miss out on you don’t gain back. It’s great to have the the top 10 players playing and Scottie Scheffler’s going to win a lot but it’s also good to have an influx of new players. We’re star building for the future. Golf backfills itself with stardom. Look at Bob MacIntrye. Golf will build itself new stars but we have to let it. Cutting fields in half is not a way to do it.

“We need to make it a manageable number so we’re not finishing on Saturday to make a cut, in the 120 to 132 range. There are probably a lot of guys that would like to kick me in the teeth for saying this but we probably have to look at the No. 125 and determine whether it’s still viable as the number for being fully exempt. It seems to me like 115, 100 would be more reasonable. We’ve got players coming from the DP World Tour. Maybe we start sending some of our players in that direction. You finish Nos. 26-45 on Korn Ferry Tour this year and maybe we send those players to DP World Tour. You think they’ll take it? I do and it will probably make them better players in the long run.”

“I fully appreciate having events that are elevated, having a little bit more merit, have a little bit more substance for our sponsors and for TV and players’ fans, I think there’s a space. I think this is the first iteration. I look at the first year of the FedEx Cup and we didn’t get it right the first time, didn’t get it right the second time, probably didn’t get it right the third or fourth time but at some point, it just kind of, it just happens. And I think that’s kind of where we’re at right now. To what degree it will change or morph or nuance, I don’t know. But I think there’s a space for now.

“The only thing I would like to see is no sponsor exemptions, strictly merit. If we’re going to promote meritocracy, remove them completely. And I say that I understand the history the tradition of like say Muirfield Village, Bay Hill, those two particularly, maybe even L.A., because there’s a couple of rules you know that there’s some attachments their sponsor sponsors exempted.”

“Top 50 is so massive. I think it’s more important now than it’s ever been. It’s a massive advantage. The points are so much bigger. First time in a while that I couldn’t set my schedule. You’ve got to play your way in.

“You have these sponsors spending $25 million so they’re going to want some of their own guys.

“Early in my career, top 30 got into the World Golf Championships. So, now they’re giving 20 more spots. Playing well takes care of everything.

“On whether changes should be made: They know that. They’ll make some adjustments. After next year, they’ll do something.”

Billy Horschel

“I think it is working. I think it does allow players that play well throughout the year to work their way into signature events and then into the top 50. You have to have a really good year if you’re not inside the signature events. I was fortunate I played well in one of them. I played well in two majors. You have to play well at the right time. It’s a difficult thing to do but it’s possible. Yes, it’s an advantage to be in the top 50. At the same time, there’s enough opportunity throughout the year to work your way into the top 50.

“When I realized the pecking order, I told the Tour that Tour winners should go ahead of the Aon 10, and the Swing 5. That will allow even more opportunities to allow players into those categories. That’s the one change to the system I would make now.”

Horschel on returning to an opposite-field event again: “I accepted where I was, that I hadn’t played well in 2023 and that there was a possibility I might need to play some opposite field events to get into the Swing 5 and Aon 10. I was fully of the mindset that I was going there for one reason only and that was to win. I didn’t have to swallow any pride. I had come to the realization that I had put myself in this position and I had to get myself out of it and fortunately it worked itself out.”

He wrote or called tournament directors or sponsors at every event. He received invites from Memorial, where he won in 2022, and the Travelers, where he was 11 th in the Aon standings and missed qualifying by a few points. Horschel had this to say about sponsor invites: “There should be a limit. I almost feel there shouldn’t be any sponsor invites. You should be able to play your way into them. Sponsor invites get a little messy and we’ve seen that this year. I understand sponsors want to invite certain players who have looked after the event and may bring more attention to the event. Maybe there should be a cap on them. Maybe only four to the signature events. It’s just another way to give more opportunities to more players.

“I will study the FedEx Cup final standings in the next few weeks after the season is done with and circle back to the Tour to see how they think things worked out and how they are thinking of things going into next year.”

Fifty matters. I think the talent of the Tour, the depth of the Tour is so deep now that 50 is small. I’m on the outside of it so it is easy for me to say that. If I was on the other side, I’d be saying keep everyone out.

You have to have a really good year. I think (fields) should be 100-ish. I know we’re talking about cutting cards down to a hundred guys and all that stuff; we’re just making it hard to get out here and it’s already hard enough.

I think the point structure should change. I’m not smart enough to do all that math. If you want to keep 70-man fields, fine, but lessen how many points they get. The difference in points is staggering but you can always just play better. Peter Malnati did it. He won and he got in them. The difference in the points makes us feel like we’re not as important as maybe some of us think we are. And really we’re not that important. We feel important, we want to be important but we’re really not that important. They can run those 70-man events.

Asked about not getting any sponsor invites: My level in this game will never be higher because of Netflix unless I win a major. To not get one, to not even sniff one, it’s fine, just play better. It would’ve been nice to get one but they’re not keeping anyone out, you can always play your way in.
