JA BizTown presented by CommunityAmerica Credit Union logo

JA BizTown® is an opportunity for students to work and grow in a simulated Kansas City. The curriculum helps teachers answer the question “why do I need to learn this?” and students can connect the dots between academics and the real world in a matter of weeks. JA provides teachers with the training, curriculum and ongoing support to ensure that they are able to work with their students to prepare for the visit to JA BizTown®. Most teachers start the curriculum in their classrooms about a month ahead of the field trip to ensure that kids are ready to get to work.

Students learn budgeting, work readiness skills, and then get to put what they learn to use when the visit JA BizTown® and run a city for a day. It’s a unique experience that will allow students to make financial decisions and collaborate with peers and volunteers to work towards their goals. In a quick four hour visit (two pay periods), students will be able to practice citizenship and work together to make the day a success.

Adults that grew up in Kansas City may fondly remember similar 5th grade fieldtrip experiences, and JA BizTown® will have that same effect on the students in classrooms today. JA has some availability for this school year, but dates are booking quickly!

Students get hands-on experience at being citizens, consumers, employees and business owners.

Biztown1

Each year, more than 21,000 fifth grade students in Broward and South Palm Beach Counties visit Junior Achievement of South Florida’s JA BizTown . JA World Huizenga Center at the Lillian S. Wells Pavilion houses two identical JA BizTowns. Both the Dave and Lorraine Thomas JA BizTown and Falcone Family JA BizTown have 18 public and private storefronts, all sponsored by real local businesses, that help brings the town to life for the students.

This real-life simulation prepares our youth for tomorrow’s careers by learning essential skills that will make them more successful as professionals and members of the community. These include active listening, applying information, brainstorming, collaboration, cooperation, creativity, critical thinking, following directions, problem-solving, showing responsibility and various soft skills (customer service, punctuality, and dressing professionally).

JA BIZTOWN®

Connecting the dots between what kids learn in school and how it’s applied in the real world isn’t that simple.  That’s why we created JA BizTown ® , an engaging, hands-on program that introduces 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to economic concepts, workplace skills, and personal and business finances in a student-sized town built just for them.

Students first take part in a series of classroom lessons where they learn about working in and being consumers in today’s world. They work together to create business plans, calculate operating costs, design a marketing campaign, apply for jobs, vote for city officials, and explore careers.  Then, they put their skills to work by becoming employees for a day in one of our two JA BizTowns, on-site learning facilities that feature more than 40 different businesses and industries.

THE JA BIZTOWN EXPERIENCE

During their time at JA BizTown, students operate a simulated economy and take on the challenge of running businesses. They get hands-on experience as both employees and consumers, paying rent, taxes and utilities, buying advertising from the radio station, conducting TV interviews, purchasing insurance, depositing paychecks and buying other business’ products, handling customer service, and more.

Assisted by volunteer mentors, the students must make the hard and practical decisions to see their businesses thrive and succeed in their role, just like the real world.

Our JA BizTown Sponsors

Prior to visiting JA BizTown, students engage in a comprehensive classroom curriculum that teaches them how an economy works, citizen rights and responsibilities, how to get a job, how to operate a successful business, and how to manage a personal bank account. They will also fill out a job application, interview for their position, and elect a mayor.

The curriculum emphasizes the importance of ethical business practices, teamwork and making sound business decisions. Throughout the program, students also begin to recognize that career and job choices are related to personal interest, skills, knowledge and education.

There are 13 required project-based lessons that align with Common Core and Florida State Standards. They can be adapted to any subject taught within the classroom, and incorporate activities within the lessons that focus on critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving, and include options to utilize technology within the classroom.

In addition to the lessons, preparations will also need to be made for the visit day at JA BizTown. The students will meet with their business groups in the classroom to calculate their business costs and loan amount, create advertisements for the newspaper, radio, and TV Station, as well as fill out deposit tickets, a savings check, and checkbook register for their personal bank accounts.

Give your students an experience that will impact their future educational and professional choices!

Imagine the fifth grade students at your school managing and operating their own city of businesses, banks, a city hall and foundation.  Your students will rush to the bank to deposit their paychecks; sales clerks create merchandise displays and reporters interview local business leaders to get the most up-to-date story. Across the way the restaurant prepares for the lunch hour and the mayor meets with business managers to get an understanding of current economic trends. This is only a snapshot of what the JA BizTown program has to offer your students, the experience that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, and that is all because teachers such as yourself commit to participating in the program and providing this unique opportunity to their students.

JA BizTown is a learning experience for 5 th grade students that teaches economic concepts, workplace skills, and personal and business finances in a child-size town built just for them. Our partner educators (you!) deliver 14 lessons in the classroom before their students visit JA BizTown. The curriculum is correlated to  Common Core and Florida State standards  and is designed to be easily taught straight from the educator’s kit we provide. We train all teachers on the curriculum and provide the teaching materials during a one-time training.

Each lesson takes approximately an hour and the curriculum typically takes about 4-5 weeks to implement in total. Once the students receive the curriculum in their classrooms, they attend an on-site simulation, where each student will have a job within a business team, buys/sells products, receives a paycheck and manages a personal bank account.

JA Biztown Volunteers

Each simulation day requires between  20-25 volunteers to assist in the visit.

We cannot run the JA BizTown simulation without volunteers to supervise and assist the students, and by volunteering, you are making it possible for our schools to participate in the program!

As a volunteer, you will be assigned to one of the businesses in JA BizTown, where you will assist the students in managing business meetings, completing their job duties for the day, and help them to stay on task and focus on their business and personal goals.

JA BizTown volunteers do not need to have specific expertise and are encouraged to share real-world experience/advice to the students as they learn what it means to be a working professional.

The total time commitment is 5 hours, which includes a 1  hr training the morning of before the students arrive, where you will receive training on how to facilitate the students’ learning in the business they’ve been assigned. We will go over what to expect and how to make the day successful for you as well as the students. During the day, you will receive a volunteer binder, with helpful checklists, FAQs, and troubleshooting tips.

BizTown 2

The program supports critical thinking skills and student engagement, and helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. It is a four-week economy curriculum culminating in a hands-on field trip to the amazing JA BizTown site where 5th graders enthusiastically spend the day operating a simulated city’s commerce as business owners and employees. Through the classroom program of daily social studies, reading, writing, and math lessons, Curie, Doyle and Spreckels students will be educated about the important elements of work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. At the same time, a solid foundation of business, economics, and free enterprise education will be built.

Students learn about the circular flow that exists in a community:

  • How to write and deposit checks
  • How to interview for a job
  • How to become a respected employer or employee

Through the active participation in the field trip to the simulated city, students learn to:

  • Demonstrate hard work at their assigned jobs (some job examples are CEO of Mission Federal Bank, Photographer at Sea World, Nutritionist at Kaiser Permanente, and Editor of the Union Tribune Newspaper)
  • Endorse and cash their paychecks
  • Spend their JA BizTown money to keep the economy flowing

“The students walked away learning some amazing and important life-skills,” said Kelly Dudley. “I’m sure that they will always regard their experience at JA BizTown as their first introduction to the ‘real’ working world! Thank you VERY much EdUCate! for funding this awesome educational program and trip for our 5th graders again this year!”

The Student News Site of Imagine Prep Surprise

JA Biztown field Trip

Kala Lansford , Contributing Writer | November 6, 2018

Biztown is the place to be for kids to feel like an adult! Imagine Prep Surprise had a field trip on Oct. 1, 2018 and everyone was completely prepared, since students have been studying for the whole first quarter.

Biztown is a place for kids to learn how to run and work a business and community.

“Biztown made me feel like I was grown up and actually working in a business,” sixth grader Mia Hiniker said after the trip.

“It was fun being in charge and making money,” sxith grader Dorien Orstred said.

There are different levels of work, like in real life such as CEO, CFO, sales manager, product development manager and more. The students thought that was interesting and realistic for there to be more than one level of everything. Each level of work got different payroll amounts as well so that also was a lot like real life and how it works in a business.

There was “Employee of The Day,” “Most Qualified Company,” and certificates for paying off your loan.

On the money side of things, JA Biztown did a great job with having a bank, paying bills, paying taxes, and paychecks.

“The Credit card and bank account made it feel so real and we actually got to use it too, which made things even more real,” sixth grader Keila Ramirez said.

The space the students had to work in was a good environment. The CFO had their own desk with a computer to deposit money they made, pay off their bills, and print payrolls. They also had their own printers and a cup of pens and pencils. In restaurants, there were actual tables and menus above the cash register for customers to look at. The bank actually had bank tellers and lines. There was fake money they gave you if you didn’t want to use your card and there were mailboxes in every business that they got bills you had to pay and bills that were paid by other companies.

The TV company, “Cox Communications” was on televisions in every business. They were on live talking about real things, like weather and time. They interviewed CEO’s to talk about their experience at JA Biztown. There also were reporters, so they were on TV all the time.

“It felt so real and cool to be on Tv in front of a real audience,” Hiniker said, who was a reporter at Cox Communications.

“I liked working with my friends and using teamwork to do something adults do,” Hiniker said.

Students got to work with at least five other people, which is good because they need to learn how to work with others in the real world. Teamwork is a great skill to have in working at a business too because some things are hard to do on your own.

JA biztown taught kids how to be a good employee and learn how to run and work a business. Also, how to pay bills, taxes, and work with others in a community and to be a good citizen.

Top Ten San Jose Field Trips

  • by Jody Amable on Feb 2, 2011

ja biztown field trip

The entrance to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose

The Tech Museum,San Jose Other children’s museums and kid-oriented attractions had to step up their game when this place moved into its flashy digs on San Carlos in 1998. The Tech Museum was, and still is, the place to indulge your inner geek, by playing with complicated electronic contraptions that looked like the things your parents told you not to mess with, and ogling the awesome IMAX dome. While not all of us grew up to be programmers, we all got a quick thrill riding the earthquake simulator, piloting our own jet pack, or spelling out dirty words with the alphabet-block robot on the 2nd floor.

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, San Jose It’s pretty much agreed that the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is the coolest place you’ll ever be forced to go. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum throws you head-first into the world of the Ancient Egyptians, jam-packed with ancient art and pottery, well-preserved mummies, and even a life-size, walk-through model of an Egyptian tomb. Even the most determined class clown, when faced with artifacts that have survived thousands upon thousands of years, had to wonder what the Egyptians were doing right. There’s a good chance the Rosicrucian Museum might have, even for a few hours, made you care about history.

ja biztown field trip

Alum Rock Park, San Jose What’s that smell? Why, it’s the enticing, rotten-egg aroma of sulfur, and there’s a huge concentration of it in the water that flows in the mineral springs at Alum Rock Park . As unpleasantly pungent as Alum Rock Park may be, it’s home to the Youth Science Institute, where students can take in science exhibits and meet a small collection of feathered friends that the Institute studies and cares for.

Emma Prusch Farm Park, San Jose The last thing you’d expect to see under the freeway at Story and King is sprawling green acreage, but there Emma Prusch Farm Park stands, as it has for almost 50 years. Prusch Farm Park has a barn that houses friendly livestock that like to meet and greet with younger kids, making it a popular field trip with preschools, kindergarten classes and day camps. Emma Prusch Farms experiencing a renaissance of sorts these days, gaining new relevance as the curators of Veggielution, a community farm program aiming to create a sustainable stock of vegetables for San Joseans.
