Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Top things to do

Food tour in bangkok.

Bangkok has a range of exciting things for you to experience. A food tour is the best way to take a deep dive into the local culture. Don’t look at the menu or decor. Look at the number of people then you will know you choose the right one. Tom Yum Gung - the Thai masterpiece soup, Gang Keow Wan - the famous Thai green curry, Pad Thai - the national dish of Thailand, and the grilled pork skewers Kao Niew Moo Yang are some authentic Thai food that many are passionate about.

Tuk-tuk riding in Bangkok

Hopping into a tuk-tuk to explore this big and bustling city is a must-do experience in Thailand family vacation packages. The kids will love the adventurous feeling of a tuktuk wriggling around every corner of the city.

See the temples, any city

This is a must when you are in Thailand as Buddhism is practiced by more than 95% of the population. It’s easy to encounter a temple on your way as they are many.

Recall the glory days of the powerful Siam Kingdom

80 kilometers from Bangkok, Thailand’s old capital of Ayutthaya is filled with ancient ruins - heritages of the Siam Kingdom, a golden age of Thai history. Among the recommended relics are Wat Phra Sri Sanphet and Wat Mahathat - a Buddha head emerging from the roots of a tree.

Taste northern Thai food, Chiangmai

Rich with history and native ingredients, Northern culinary specialties satisfy every hungry soul. In a wide range of Chiang Mai food, Khao Soi is the most famous. It is a perfect blend of curry soup and coconut milk to create a thick, rich texture, served with crunchy fried noodles.

Know about Lanna's Culture, Chiangmai

The cultural heaven of Chiang Mai is rooted in the history of the 700-year-old Lanna kingdom. Chiang Mai has its own culture, cuisine, and crafts which are so strong that it is unofficially named Thailand’s “second city.” Meet old and young talented generations in Chiangmai to see how they keep their ancient culture alive.

Meet the elephants

Seeing and walking with the giant is a one-of-a-kind experience in Thailand’s exotic vacation packages. Many ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand give the old, sick, tired elephants a new chance to enjoy life. And your visit contributes to this meaningful activity. (Feel free to ask us for the information).

Learn Thai recipes

After tasting all the best bites from north to south, you might ask yourself why Thai food is so delicious. Attend a cooking class where you can learn much more from a local chef than by reading a cookbook. First and foremost, the class will help you to get familiar with Thai basic ingredients such as marinade pastes, curry paste, and Thai chili jam which lead to a wide variety of Thai dishes.

Go to Pai - Best Thailand trip package for couple

This small town is one of Thailand’s brightest hidden gems . Pai bamboo bridge is Instagram-worthy, the cafes have romantic views, and its lovely night market is an experience you simply cannot miss.

Visit Chiang Rai

The sleepy town of Chiang Rai exudes a nostalgic vibe of the olden time. Here is home to the famed White Temple and Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar all meet.

Go to nature

One of the most extraordinary Thailand sightseeing is going to nature at Khao Sok National Park. This place covers  738 sq. km of hundreds-million-year-jungles, picturesque Cheow Lan Lake, towering limestone cliffs, mangrove forests, and rich wildlife. Add this Thailand’s largest protected park to your itinerary to enrich your luxury vacations in Thailand with breathtaking nature.

Beach gateway on the Andaman Coast

The Andaman Sea offers countless sandy beaches with palm trees and azure water. Here, you find Phuket , Thailand’s largest and most well-known island with great viewpoints, interesting night markets, great cuisine, beach bars, Phuket surfing, and impressive temples. Khao Lak is a more quiet place, suitable for families and travelers who want relaxation. Similan Islands are among the most beautiful diving spots in the world, thanks to its diverse marine life, and Koh Lipe , known as Thailand’s Maldives, is a remote dream for couples.

Island hopping on the Gulf of Thailand

Located on the east coast of Southern Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand is perfect for adventurous souls. Hop from the sexy beaches in Koh Samui to Ang Thong National Marine Park with a collection of uninhabited islands and wildlife, Koh Phangan - a mecca of endless full-moon parties, and Koh Tao - a beautiful island full of surprises. When the sun goes down, take part in active nightlife in the beachside restaurants offering Thai seafood and plenty of bars to chill in the stunning sunset views.

Island hopping is always one of should-not-to-be-missed Thailand tours for singles, couples, and families.

Land of Smiles

There is certainly a lot to smile about when you vacation in Thailand. Here, the Old World meets something entirely new. From temples to markets to food to waterways to beaches to nightlife, there is something to please everyone. As Thailand – a constitutional monarchy – is the only country in Southeast Asia to not have been colonized by Europeans, its cultural identity remains largely intact. And the Thai people, among the friendliest in the world, love to share their country with visitors. The only question is what not to see!

Destination Must-See's

Thailand ms1

Bangkok, or the City of Angels, was founded in 1782 by King Rama I – first king of the present Chakri dynasty. It has come a long way in 235 years. It is the political, economic, cultural, culinary, and spiritual capital of Thailand, and one of the world’s most visited cities. With so much to offer, how does one prioritize? Start with its temples, such as Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun. For more culture, visit the Grand Palace and the National Museum.

Thailand ms2

Buddhist Temples:

Buddhist temples in Thailand are known as wats. There are more than 30,000 temples in Thailand – 400 functioning temples in Bangkok alone. Wat Pho in Bangkok is Thailand’s most sacred site, and home to the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This golden Buddha is 151 feet long and the largest in Thailand. Wat Phra Kaew, also in Bangkok, is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most sacred Buddha sculpture carved out of green jade. Bangkok’s Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, has the tallest prang (tower) in Thailand – 220 feet high – decorated with bits of porcelain and seashells.

Thailand ms3

The Grand Palace:

The Grand Palace, located in Bangkok, is actually many buildings. King Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty, began construction of his royal palace in 1782, and it was used as a royal residence until 1925. Surrounded by four walls, it has a total area of 2,351,000 square feet. There are three main zones: the Outer Court (royal offices, public buildings, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha); the Middle Court (important residential and state buildings); and the Inner Court (exclusive to the King, Queen, and consorts). It is a must-see in Bangkok.

Thailand ms4

Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai:

In the north of Thailand there are two cities definitely worth a visit. Chiang Rai is the northernmost large city in Thailand. It was founded in 1262 as the second capital of the Lanna kingdom, after Chiang Saen. Some notable sites are temples such as the Wat Rong Khun Temple (the white temple); the Saturday Walking Street market and the Night Bazaar; and the Hill-Tribes Museum and Education Centre. Chiang Mai, or the “Rose of the North,” is Thailand’s northern capital. It succeeded Chiang Rai as the capital of the Lanna kingdom in 1296. Some notable sites here are Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most famous of the city’s 300 temples; and the Sunday Evening Walking Street market.

Destination Must-Do's

Thailand md1

Markets are a way of life for the Thai people, and they are popular with visitors as well. The Chatuchak Market in Bangkok has more than 8,000 shops on weekends. Vendors sell fruits and vegetables, clothes, pottery and ceramics, basketry, accessories, flowers, and even pets, among other things. The Silom district of Bangkok has all manner of shopping, from a mall to markets, including a night market. Night markets have a lively atmosphere. You can find local items here, along with food, drink and live music. They can get quite crowded. Floating markets emerged as a result of daily commerce being done along rivers and klongs (canals). Damnoen Saduak, outside Bangkok, is the most famous.

Thailand md2

Thai Cuisine:

Thai cuisine is a balance of five flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and spicy. Most people know of pad Thai, or fried noodles, but there are many other dishes to try. Tom Yam Goong is a spicy shrimp soup made with a broth of lemongrass, chillies, lime leaves and juice, and fish sauce. Tom Kha Kai is a spicy chicken soup with chillies and lemongrass in a coconut milk broth. Som Tam, or spicy green papaya salad, perfectly represents all five flavors. Kao Pad is fried rice with egg, onion, and herbs. Gaeng Keow Wan Kai is chicken in green curry – green curry paste stirred into hot coconut milk. And there is so much more! Most dishes are served with rice, a Thai staple. If you prefer to not have your mouth on fire, ask for “mai phed,” or not spicy.

Thailand md3

The waterways in Thailand have long been an integral part of life here. Bangkok was once called the “Venice of the East” because of its klongs, or canals. Many have been filled in, but there are still some that are used for floating markets. A long-tail boat, a lightweight vessel with narrow beams, high-pointed bows and a canopy, is used as a floating market “stand,” but visitors can take rides in these boats as well. Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River – “the River of Kings” – is the dividing line between the east and west of the city. And in the north of Thailand, the mighty Mekong River forms a border between Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, known as the Golden Triangle.

Thailand md4

Kanchanaburi:

The bridge that spans the River Kwai, subject of a famous book and 1957 film, is part of the infamous Death Railway in the Kanchanaburi province in western Thailand. The 258-mile railway, built by Allied prisoners of war and native laborers, served to connect Thailand and Myanmar by land so that the Imperial Japanese Army didn’t have to transport their supplies by sea. It is estimated that more than 100,000 POWs and laborers died during construction, hence the Death Railway name. Today, both the bridge and railway are symbols of peace. There are also two museums and a war memorial.

Escorted & Package Tours in Thailand

Escorted Genereal-Interest Tours

Escorted tours are structured group tours with a group leader. The price usually includes everything from airfare to hotels, meals, tours, admission costs, and local transportation. Here are some of the best operators for Thailand.

  • Absolute Asia ( www.absoluteasiajourneys.com ; tel. 800/736-8187 ): Founded in 1989, Absolute Asia offers an array of innovative itineraries, specializing in individual or small group tours customized to your interests, with experienced local guides and excellent accommodations. Talk to them about tours that feature art, cuisine, religion, antiques, photography, wildlife study, archaeology, and soft adventure -- they can plan a specialized trip to see just about anything you can dream up for any length of time.
  • Asia Transpacific Journeys ( www.asiatranspacific.com ; tel. 800/642-2742 or 303/443-6789): Coordinating tours to every corner of South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Asia Transpacific Journeys deals with small groups and custom programs that include luxury hotel accommodations. They have specific tours for Thailand, such as the Best of Thailand, a 14-day trip that takes in Bangkok, the north, and the southern beaches. Asia Transpacific tours are fun, promote cultural understanding and sustainable tourism, and are highly recommended.
  • Diethelm ( www.diethelmtravel.com ; tel. 02660-7000 ): The folks at this Swiss-based tour company, with offices throughout the region, are friendly and helpful, and a popular choice for European tour groups. Diethelm has full tour programs and can provide details for travelers in-country, arrange car rental or vans for small groups, and offer discount options to all destinations.
  • Intrepid ( www.intrepidtravel.com ; tel. 1300/364-512, or 800/970-7299 in the U.S.): This popular Australian operator is a reliable choice to get off the beaten path on a tour of Asia. Intrepid caters tours for the culturally discerning, those with humanitarian goals, and adventure travelers on a budget looking for a group-oriented tour of off-the-map locations. They live up to their name, and with some of the best guides in Asia, these folks will take you to the back of beyond safely and in style.
  • World Spree (www.worldspree.com; tel. 866/652-5656 ) is usually the price leader to Asia, and Thailand is no exception. It offers great value trips throughout the year, some just to Thailand, others that mix a visit here with Cambodia or Laos. And unlike many other Asia specialists, World Spree never includes bogus "shopping experiences" (where travelers are steered into stores where the tour company gets a kickback). Expect top quality guides and accommodations for a lower-than-usual price.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

More information about Thailand

A vacation to   Thailand  is one of the most popular travel experiences in  Southeast Asia . The country continues to attract the public thanks to its fantastic mix of spectacular beaches, temples, delicious cuisine, a variety of activities and its cheerful locals. Located in the center of  Southeast Asia , on the  Indochina Peninsula , the Kingdom of  Thailand  is a dazzling treasure of the East. Its shares a border on to the east with  Laos , on the southeast with  Cambodia  and the  Gulf of Thailand , on the south with  Malaysia  and on the west with  Myanmar  and the  Andaman Sea.

Its  69 million  inhabitants are distributed along  1770 kilometers  from north to south and  805 kilometers  from east to west in  76 provinces , which have the same name as their corresponding capital cities.  Bangkok  is the most populated and has the highest population density. On a  tour of   Thailand , you will be amazed by the kindness of its inhabitants; it has even been granted the nickname of ‘ The Land of Smiles’.

The most mountainous area can be found close to the border with  Myanmar  and the highest peak is the  Doi Inthanon  at  2595 meters  and is located to the north, in the province of  Chiang Mai.  Its two main river systems are the  Chao Phraya,  which provides drainage for 35% of the country and runs through the heart of  Bangkok  and the  Mekong River , which serves as a natural border with  Myanmar  and  Laos  in the famous  Golden Triangle.

Thailand  enjoys a humid  tropical climate  with temperatures ranging between  15  and  35   degrees Celsius.  The monsoon season runs from  June  to  October , and the coolest months are from  November  to  February.   The remainder of the year is delightfully warm.

Nature in Thailand

Thailand  has a varied landscape, ranging from woodland to tropical mangroves, in the form of forests and jungles, which covers  25%  of the country and which together with the plateau, exhibits exuberant specimens of mangroves, Indian reeds, ebony, teak, oak , pines, bamboos, palms, ratans, lianas, fruit trees such as coconuts, mangoes and bananas and up to  27,000  species of plants and flowers such as fistula,  orchids , hibiscus or gardenias.

The more than  100 national parks  have a fundamental role in the protection of the  313  species of  reptiles ,  107  of  amphibians ,  900  of  birds  and  300  species of  mammals  that can be found in the country, such as elephants, tigers, monkeys, leopards, wild oxen, buffalos, tapirs, snakes and crocodiles.  Thailand  also has exceptionally rich marine life including reef fish, sea cow, crossbow fish, whale shark, and giant spider crabs, ensuring scuba diving is one of the most common activities for visitors on a  trip to Thailand.

Economy in Thailand

The Thai economy is supported by agriculture, rice cultivation, duck, pig, ox and cow farming and fishing in the  Andaman Sea ,  Gulf of Thailand  and the  Mekong River . Being one of the ten most visited countries in the world, tourism represents one of the main sources of income and has produced many job opportunities for its inhabitants.

It is a very well connected country and has a large transport network, so it is an easy country in which to enjoy a tour. It has  25 airports  and many international airlines land in  Bangkok , one of the most important airports in Asia. It has an extensive network of roads that move buses, minivans, cars, and motorcycles; the railways connect the most important cities of the country; A large number of private ferry companies connect the many islands and the best options to get around the capital's streets are the subway, the metro, the taxi or on a traditional tuk-tuk.

Religion in Thailand

75% of  Thailand’s  inhabitants belong to the  Que Tai  and  Lao  ethnic groups, the vast Chinese community represents about 15% of the population and the remainder of the country’s inhabitants are either  Malays, Mon, Khmer  and indigenous tribes from the highlands.

95% of the population follows the  Buddhist   Theravada  school of belief, 4% are  Muslim  and the remaining 1% identify as either  Hindu, Christian, Confucian  or  Taoist.  Thai men usually enter temporarily into a monastery for about three months after finishing their university studies. In the time they are there, they are novice monks and they can decide freely when to leave it. The reason why they do this is to cleanse their mind, earn merit and honor their parents.

History of Thailand

A  package holiday to Thailand  will undoubtedly bring you face-to-face with the living monuments of the country’s vast history. The oldest archaeological site in  Thailand  dates from  3600 BC  but the founding of the nation was established in  1238  with the  Kingdom of Sukhothai  until  1365  when it was replaced by the  Kingdom of Ayutthaya.  After the fall of this kingdom in  1767,  at the hands of the Burmese when the capital was devastated and burned, it was moved to  Thonburi  under the mandate of  King Taksin the Great.  In  1782  the reign of  Siam  passed to the  Chakri dynasty  with  Rama I,  who declared  Bangkok  the new capital.

The absolute monarchy of  Rama VII  became constitutional as a result of the coup d'état of  1932 . During the  Second World War ,  Thailand  was allied with  Japan , but during the final stages of the war, it unified with the  United States . In  1946 Rama IX  came to the throne and in  1949 ,  Siam  changed its name to  Thailand . After 17 violent attempts to seize political power and years of political instability, in  2014  the army staged a new coup d'etat. In  2016  the beloved king died, putting an end to the most enduring reign in the world. After seven decades of rule, the king was succeeded by his son  Rama  who found himself under a military dictatorship. Despite the attempts, it is the only  Southeast Asian  country that has  never been colonized  by a European power.

Culture and Traditions in Thailand

The Thais have had a centuries-long special relationship with  elephants , or  ‘chang’ , as they call them. These immense and beautiful creatures have been a fundamental part of the culture and appeared on the national flag until  1917 . Throughout history, these noble animals have been domesticated and have assisted in the construction, transport, and warfare. The importance and admiration for them are also reflected in  Buddhist  and  Hindu  beliefs and mythological legends giving them a mystical power and making them bearers of good luck. They are a true symbol for the country.

It is true that  elephants  in  Thailand  have also been the object of abuse, ill-treatment, and illegal trade, but fortunately, there are institutions that ethically rescue, care for, treat and feed them.

The picturesque  floating markets  are another of the Thai traditions and an essential visit on a  holiday to Thailand . A universe of canals, canoes, and houses on stilts, these floating markets are a unique insight into the daily lives of the locals as they buy and sell fruits, vegetables, crafts, and freshly cooked dishes.

Thai boxing or  ‘Muay Thai’  is a popular martial art and is considered a national sport. In the  Kingdom of Sukhothai , it was part of the military training of the soldiers.

Thai massages  are another hallmark of the country and follow an ancient philosophy. The technique was created  2,500  years ago by  Dr. Shivago , Buddha's physician, in which he combined different Asian techniques,  Ayurvedic  principles, and  yoga postures . You cannot fully experience a  tour of Thailand  without enjoying one of these wonderful massages. The technique consists of strong pressure and stretches in which the therapist uses their hands, fists, elbows, knees, feet, arms and legs in order for the recipient to achieve  physical, mental and emotional balance . There are countless massage parlors throughout the country and the prices are very cheap.

Embarking on a comprehensive  tour of Thailand  takes visitors through a fascinating and varied territory with a vast history to discover a country that will surprise you with its unique landscapes and variety of traditions. The country is a heavyweight in tourism and it is well deserved. Everyone wants to go and discover the country for themselves and whoever has visited always wants to return to explore further.

Why is Thailand the most popular destination in Asia?

The answer is simple; because it has everything; a rich historical heritage, the fruit of the kingdoms of Siam and Lanna; ancestral traditions and rigorous customs; a sublime artistic legacy that is reflected in the delicacy and beauty of its temples; captivating cities, well connected to each other; a bustling capital city; a dreamlike landscape that stretches from the lush mountain forests of the north to the idyllic islands of the south with magnificent beaches of fine sand and warm crystalline waters; national parks and nature reserves full of exotic wildlife, frantic cities and quiet rural areas, a delicious aromatic cuisine, a warm climate, accommodations of all kinds and for all budgets, virgin landscapes in which to practice sports such as hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, cycling, sailing or rafting, a lively nightlife and a mystical and spiritual environment; numerous modern shopping centers and street markets, an infrastructure prepared for tourism and affordable prices; and the most important thing, kind and friendly locals who always greet visitors with an unbreakable smile, infecting you with their infinite joy and their caring, tolerant and educated attitude, perhaps the fruit of  Buddhist  teachings. Hence the Thai proverb,  ‘do good and receive good, do evil and receive evil’.

A  holiday to Thailand  means entering into the deepest and warmest of Asian traditions. Its millenarian culture is a reference point and attracts, like a magnet, the western tourist who seeks traveler enrichment and open-mindedness. The capital,  Bangkok , is a bustling and extensive city, with a cultural treasure that deserves to be given time before leaving for one of the more than one hundred  tropical islands  that are distributed between the  Gulf of Thailand  or the  Andaman Sea , always a highlight in  all-inclusive trips to Thailand . On these islands, you can find young people in search of nightlife and also those who seek silence or solely the whisper of the waves. And for the most restless, the north of the country offers all the possibilities and the mystery of the jungle in the  Golden Triangle of Thailand.

Thailand  is a land of freedom. When you step foot in the country it seduces you with what you see, hear, taste, smell and feel. That's why traveling to Thailand means immersing yourself in an unbeatable cocktail of floating markets and tuk-tuks, pad thai and tropical fruits, waterfalls and lakes, skyscrapers and houseboats, lanterns illuminating the night sky, sun and rain, sea and mountains, monks with saffron robes and Buddhist rituals, rivers and forests, flowers and offerings, caves and coral reefs, golden Buddhas and temples with pointed roofs.Thai’s are experts at making floral arrangements that they exhibit as ornamentation in their sacred places. Mythical  Thailand  is like a flower; delicate, colorful, aromatic, beautiful, wild, romantic and natural. Do not hesitate to explore; a magical trip awaits you.

Wonders of Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Tour 7-Day

I really liked the tour! It was very personal and tailored. Bangkok was great and I got time to explore by myself as well. Ko Samui is beautiful beyond words. The local tour guides were kind and helpful. However, one of the tours booked was for a Marine Park that is only opened from December onwards and my trip was in November. That was not a big problem, since there’s enough to do in the island itself. Pattaya lives up to its reputation, so it was definitely not my thing. I’m not sure if it fits with the general relaxed and cozy vibe of the tour. Also, the local tour guide there was rude. But, all and all, it was a fantastic experience!

Thailand Adventure: Bangkok, Chiang Mai & Street Food Crawls

Just got back from the Thailand Adventure tour, and it was a wild ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai! Spicy Joe (officially named Samart), our fantastic guide, not only knew the most incredible street food spots but also shared the rich tapestry of Thai culture and history. I have met folks from all over the world (and I can gladly say that I made amazing friends!), making it feel like a global foodie party. The mix of hotels and hostels was spot-on, and the logistics were smooth. Bottom line: if you want a taste of Thailand that goes beyond the touristy stuff, this tour is the real deal!

We had a great time on the tour my only feedback would be to include a more detailed packing list that’s specific to the tour instead of a generic one for all g adventures tours. We had a night on a raft house where we weren’t able to take our full suitcases - it would have been useless to know we needed a small overnight bag for this night in addition to our rucksacks that we had for the day.

What people love about 7 day thailand tours.

Ms Wassana and Ms Da took both of us on a wonderful trip around Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. They were very professional, friendly, knowledgable and took great care of us. For such a short trip, it seemed we covered a lot of memorable experiences - wonderful temples (especially the White Temple in Chiang Rai), amazing food, Chinatown, elephant sanctuary, white water rafting, NYE celebrations, Golden Triangle and border experiences just to name a few. Weather was excellent, our drivers made it easy getting from A to B - we really had a wonderful time. Many thanks to Tony at Legend Travel Group for the prompt communication and ease at which this was organised on your end. I recommend for anyone wanting a short highlight experience in these parts of Thailand.
All was awesome! clean hotels and well located, great price and guides pick us up at the airport! everything went sweet!
Tour Operator • This tour essentially did the Mae Hong Son loop of northern Thailand. It was well-organized and went smoothly. The few minor hiccups along the way - which are bound to happen - were handled quickly and fairly by the tour operator, Bravo IndoChina Tours. Guide and Transportation: • Excellent guide (Aimy), informative and helpful, she really enhanced the tour (see itinerary) • Excellent driver (Mr. S), quick and efficient and I never felt nervous about his driving • Very comfortable van Accommodation: • Some accommodation was not that good, in particular, Hotel M Chiang Mai. The room on the first night had a strong sewer gas smell coming from the bathroom, and there was no hot water for the morning shower. The tour company arranged for the hotel to move us to a different room the second night, and it was better. However, on the last night (at the end of the tour), again there was no hot water. There are quite a few hotels to choose from in Chiang Mai and it should be possible to use a much better hotel for the same price or a very small increment in price. • The guest house in Mae Sariang was a little rustic but it is a small town where there is not much choice, so that is understandable. • The resort in Pai was very good, the best of the 3 hotels used. Itinerary: • The first day of the actual tour is very light, with just a visit to the Doi Suthep Temple in Chiang Mai. It seemed a bit like a wasted day. There are plenty of things to do in Chiang Mai; it should be simple to provide a full day of interesting things. Alternatively, drop the preceding night from the tour and reduce the cost accordingly. • The second day (Doi Inthanon National Park) was very good. The Royal Pagodas were the highlight, but overall the day was full and interesting. • The third day (Mae Sariang to Pai) was very good. The highlight was Lod Cave, it is really spectacular. • The fourth day the scheduled itinerary was rather light, but fortunately our guide enhanced it for us. We were able to go on a short hike at Pai Canyon which provided some spectacular views. We went to the actual hot springs, not the warm springs at Sai Ngam. And we watched a great sunset from the White Buddha Temple overlooking Pai. • The fifth day, in consultation with our guide, we essentially discarded the scheduled itinerary which largely consisted of a long drive to Lampang to see some temples. Instead we fed elephants outside of Pai, had great fun playing at the Bua Tong sticky waterfalls, and visited an amazing set of temples in Inthakhin. This was great value added by our guide. As it turns out, some of the best moments were these unscheduled stops.

After breakfast our tour director hosts an orientation meeting and then we'll embark on a tour to some of Bangkok's most outstanding Buddhist temples. Buddhism is practiced by more than 94% of the country and is central to understanding Thai culture. We'll see the White Marble Temple, one of the finest example of Thai architecture; and Wat Po with its colossal 150-foot long "Reclining Buddha." Next, we'll visit the former residence of the Kings, the Grand Palace. The rest of our day is free to rest and relax, or consider joining an optional tour!

Day 3: Thai Markets & Sugar Palm Farm Excursion

floating market thailand

Early this morning we'll leave for the Mae Klong Railway Market. As the name suggests, this market sits on a railway and whenever a train approaches, we can expect to see a flurry of activity as baskets of wares are moved and awnings come down so the train can travel right through the heart of the market. Next, we'll drive to the colorful floating market of Damneon Saduak where we'll watch merchants sell food, produce, baskets and more from their boats. Before we return to Bangkok, we'll stop at a sugar palm farm where we can sample the local area's delights. We'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant as we make our way back to Bangkok. This evening, consider a optional Pearl Dinner Cruise.

Day 4: Bangkok – Ayutthaya – Phitsanulok

escorted tours thailand

Today we'll explore the ancient temple ruins and crumbling pagodas of Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand. Next, is Wat Mahathat, "the Temple of the Great Relic" which was once one of the kingdom's most important temples. Here we'll see the sandstone Buddha that has become entwined in the roots of a Bodhi tree. After our visit, our journey continues past beautiful rice paddies as we drive to Phitsanulok, the gateway to northern Thailand. Next, we'll visit its sister city, Sri Satchanalai where we'll stop at a privately-owned textile Museum. Our visit supports elephant conservation in the region and allows us to slow down and learn from these majestic creatures.

We'll explore the temple's beautiful architecture, statues, murals, and shrines—all of which are nothing short of breathtaking.
