Canada allowing visa free travel for some Caribbean travellers

can jamaicans travel to canada without a visa

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC – Canada Tuesday said it will allow visa-free travel to “known travellers” from 13 more countries, including St Vincent and the Grenadines passport holders.

The visa-free travel has been extended to Antigua and Barbuda, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, St Kitts-Nevis, Panama, Argentina, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Morocco,  Seychelles, Thailand and the Philippines.

Canada's Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, said that the “known travellers” will be allowed entry into the country after obtaining an electronic travel authorisation.

A known traveller is someone who currently holds a Canadian visa, obtained one over the last 10 years or holds a valid United States visa. The electronic travel authorisation will be valid for five years, or until the holder's passport expires, whichever comes first.

The visa-free travel comes 11 years after Canada imposed visa requirements for St Vincent and the Grenadines passport holders, expressing concerns about the integrity of the issuing procedures in Kingstown.

Headlines Delivered to Your Inbox

Canada had claimed that some passport holders who had been deported from the North American country had returned on passports in different names.

The Ralph Gonsalves government rejected the concerns saying that the Vincentian passport is issued only after a rigorous process of document authentication.

Fraser described Tuesday's announcement as “very good news” that will facilitate more people visiting Canada.

He said that Canada is “a nation of newcomers”, noting that with the exception of the indigenous population, every chapter of the nation's history is written by immigrants including his own family that arrived in Canada 250 years ago.

Fraser spoke of the economic contribution of immigrants to Canada as well as the connection between diaspora communities in Canada and people in their home countries.

The minister said that the expanded programme will facilitate opportunities for people to be able to visit their relatives in Canada, saying that Canada is a draw to people around the world, and his country wants to make it easier for people to visit.

He said that visitors to Canada contribute to the local and national economy and enrich the social fabric.

Fraser said the digital document will allow holders to transit through or visit Canada for up to six months and will allow Canada officials to conduct “very light touch” screening, adding that the authorisation is “almost automatic”.

Canada introducing visa-free travel to 13 countries

can jamaicans travel to canada without a visa

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship , visited Winnipeg today for an announcement regarding visa-free travel.

Passport holders from 13 countries will now be able to travel to Canada by air without requiring a Temporary Residence Visa. However, this applies only to travellers from these countries who have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or who currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa.  Eligible travellers include passport holders from:

  • Philippines
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Vincent and Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

Discover if You Are Eligible for Canadian Immigration

Fraser says Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has been working to make the pretravel screening process easier, faster, and more affordable. He says this decision will divert thousands of applications from Canada’s visa caseload, allowing IRCC to process visa applications more efficiently.

A similar pilot program was introduced in Brazil in 2017. The minister says that the program was successful in increasing visitors from Brazil by 40% and reducing the caseload in IRCC's Sao Paulo office by 60%, freeing IRCC officers to work on more complex applications.

Visa-free travel to Canada

There are more than 50 countries that can enter Canada without a visa, although most require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if they are arriving by air.

United States citizens do not require an eTA or a visa to enter Canada unless they are moving to Canada to work or study.

Nationals of countries that are not exempt from obtaining a visa, must apply for a Temporary Residence Visa (TRV), also known as a visitor visa.

A TRV allows an individual to visit Canada for a period of six months (although this may differ for some foreign nationals).

Arriving in Canada with a TRV does not give the holder permission to work or study in Canada and they may be asked to demonstrate that the purpose of their visit to Canada is only temporary (such as tourism or visiting family) at their port of entry.

IRCC is currently working through a backlog of TRV applications. The latest backlog data from IRCC shows that 50% of TRV applications are not being processed within service standards, which is 14 days.

Minister Fraser has said TRV applications were impacted by the recent strike by the Public Service Alliance of Canada . The 12-day strike lasted from April 19 until May 1 and Fraser told reporters that there were 100,000 applications not processed during that period that otherwise would have been. He also said that he expects IRCC will be able to catch up to pre-pandemic processing standards within the coming weeks, or a few months.

Travellers from 13 more countries now eligible to visit Canada without a visa

Canada is expanding the list of countries whose residents are eligible to visit this country without a travel visa.

People travelling by air from Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Costa Rica, Morocco, Panama, Philippines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay can now do so for up to six months without a visa, according to a release by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

“This exciting development means that more individuals from around the world can now embark on unforgettable adventures, explore our diverse landscapes, reunite with family and friends, and immerse themselves in our vibrant culture without the hurdle of visa requirements,” said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser in a statement issued Tuesday. “This expansion not only enhances convenience for travellers, it will also increase travel, tourism and economic benefits, as well as strengthen global bonds with these 13 countries.”

  • Capital Dispatch: Sign up for in-depth political coverage of Parliament Hill

The 13 countries have been added to the list of more than 50 other places from which travellers are visa-exempt and electronic travel authorization (eTA)-eligible, as long as they have either held a Canadian visa in the last 10 years or currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa.

The eTA is a $7 pre-screening entry requirement linked to a traveller’s passport for a period of five years, and allows people to enter Canada as frequently as they want for short stays. The eTA applications are also automatically approved within minutes, according to the government release.

The new additions will also help “divert thousands of applications from Canada’s visa caseload,” which can currently take several months, depending on the country from which someone is travelling.

Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said in the statement the addition of some of the 13 countries, particularly the Philippines, is in line with the federal government’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, released last fall.

“Expanding the eTA program to include countries like the Philippines is also an important part of our Indo-Pacific Strategy, as we look to further engage in the region, build on people-to-people ties and make travel to Canada easier, faster and safer for everyone,” she said.

According to the release, Canada can expect about 20 per cent more visitors from the 13 countries, which could bring in nearly $160 million in tourism revenue within the next decade.

  • Application processing fee
  • Biometric fee

The fees must be paid before you submit your application online or when you attend your appointment at the visa application center. Fees are subject to change at any time and will not be refunded even if your application is rejected.

How to pay the fees for your application

Click on the link which you’ll find on the visa office website:

You will be directed to IRCC’s website where you can pay the fees online:

If you are unable to make online payments, you can pay the fee at the visa application center.

If you are REQUIRED to submit biometrics, a prior appointment is mandatory. If you have provided biometric data within the last 10 years, there is no need to make an appointment. To check whether you need to provide biometric data, go to the website of IRCC .

Making appointments with the visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. However, If you are running short of time or not sure where to apply to or have no idea on how to get this done yourself then not to worry, we will make the appointment for you for a small service fee!

Booking a visa appointment using our services is pretty simple! All you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

  • Visit the link to schedule the visa appointment
  • Submit the appointment details, visa you are applying for, visa office you need the appointment for, the country you need the appointment IN and make the payment
  • Receive appointment confirmation in email

Book Visa Appointment

You can also make an appointment on your own by following the steps below:

  • Online – click on the link for scheduling an appointment
  • By telephone – call the helpline number: +1 876 728 7001
  • By email – use the web form
  • By Webchat – click on “Chat now”
  • In-person – you can visit the visa application center in person

On your appointment date, arrive at the visa application center 15 minutes prior to the scheduled time. You need to take your completed and printed application forms, supporting documents, fee receipt, original passport and two copies of the passport bio data page.

Your application and biometrics will be collected, you’ll pay any service charges and obtain a receipt.

If you are NOT REQUIRED to provide biometric data, simply visit the visa application center along with your passport, photographs, completed forms, the fee and all the supporting documents from the document checklists (see above) during business hours.

Tracking your application

Once you have submitted your application, you can track its progress. Please note, you will need the unique tracking number which would have been included on the receipt given to you after you handed over your application. You can track your application in the following ways:

  • On TT Services’ website

Email: [email protected]

  • Webchat: Chat now

The visa application decision

Once you have handed over your application, it will be reviewed to make sure it is complete. If not, it will be returned to you without being processed.

The next stage is for it to be assessed in order for the visa officer to make a decision. During this process, you may be asked to verify the information you have provided or it may be necessary for you to attend an interview. This is common practice, so don’t worry.

The visa application outcome will either be:

  • Approved – if your visa has been approved, it will be attached to one of the blank pages of your passport
  • Rejected – if your visa has been rejected, you will receive your passport with a letter explaining why.

The following reasons may result in a rejected application:

  • Documents missing – it is up to you to make sure you have everything that is required for your visa application
  • The visa officer doubts you will return home before the visa expires – it is your responsibility to provide sufficient evidence that you will return home before the visa expires. You can do this by providing documents, such as evidence of property ties, employment details etc
  • Invalid passport – your passport must be valid (see above requirements). If not, you should get a new one before applying for a visa
  • No proof of financial support – you must prove that you can pay for your trip yourself or provide evidence that someone is covering your expenses

Collecting your passport

Once a decision has been made, you can either:

  • Collect your passport from TT Services
  • Have your passport returned to you via courier
