Bullet For My Valentine / Jinjer / Atreyu

Newcastle o2 city hall, thursday april 3rd 2023.

Welsh metalcore legends Bullet For My Valentine embarked on a UK wide tour earlier last month, their first since 2021, playing tracks from their near 20-year career up and down the country, with support coming from fellow veterans Atreyu and Ukraine’s brutal yet melodic Jinjer.

Some would possibly argue that Atreyu are in the twilight of their career, and have perhaps, been on a steady decline since the departure of vocalist Alex Varkatzas in 2020. That wouldn’t quite be fair to say, as, since drummer/vocalist Brandon Saller took over the reigns as frontman (with Kyle Rosa joining the band on the kit and bassist Porter McKnight taking over screaming vocals), the band have released most recent album ‘Baptize’ in 2021 and continued to tour extensively.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

They kick off proceedings this evening, with a short but thoroughly entertaining set that displays the full range of their soundscape, beginning with the gorgeous full band a capella of ‘Strange Powers Oof Prophecy’ before diving straight into the behemoth that is ‘Becoming The Bull’.

Next up is ‘The Time Is Now’ from 2018’s ‘In Our Wake’, which sees vocalist Brandon Saller go for a little walk, off the stage, through the photo pit and into the crowd, while remaining band members Dan Jacobs (guitar), Porter McKnight (bass/vocals), Travis Miguel (guitar) and Kyle Rosa (drums) watch on and play on.

Classic track ‘Ex’s and Oh’s’ follows, as Saller then asks the crowd to “Fuck shit up!!” during latest single ‘Drowning’.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

They bring their set to a close, first with an intro to Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ (then promising to play that song in its entirety on their next UK tour), before proceeding with finale track ‘Blow’.

After witnessing their performance tonight, nobody could argue this band is anywhere near a decline. THIS is a band who are masters of their craft, touring the world and having an absolute fucking blast doing so. I think I speak for the majority of City Hall when I say that I hope Atreyu return sooner rather than later, and not just for that cover song!

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

Second up are Jinjer, arguably the heaviest band on the bill tonight, with menacing riffs aplenty delivered by Roman Ibramkhalilov while front woman Tatiana Shmayluk commands the stage with her powerful presence while delivering both growling guttural and haunting clean vocals.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

They make their way through a nine-song set featuring tracks from 2019’s ‘Macro’ and 2021’s ‘Wallflower’, including the stand-out ‘Judgment (& Punishment)’, and as they do the crowd eat it up, bodies fly around the room and over the barrier during a brutal and breath-taking performance, which for all its raw ferocity, is executed with precision.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

Perhaps like Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine are another band that you could argue have seen brighter days, but, again, to do so isn’t entirely fair. Sure, with heavy nostalgia bias, how could Matthew Tuck and Co hope to hit the heights of debut album ‘The Poison’, with classics ‘Tears Don’t Fall’, ‘All These Things I Hate’ and ‘4 Words (To Choke Upon)’, or third album, the critically acclaimed ‘Fever’, with hits such as ‘Waking The Demon’ and ‘Your Betrayal’.

Tonight, the tracks mentioned above are all given a live outing, interspersed with more recent material from 2018’s ‘Gravity’ and their self-titled album released in 2021, all of which are delivered with a sense of energy and freshness you just don’t see from veteran bands.

The opening trio of ‘Knives’, ‘Over It’ and ‘Piece Of Me’, referred to by Matt Tuck as “new shit”, are followed by some “old shit” in the form of ‘4 Words (To Choke Upon)’, ‘You Want a Battle? (Here’s a War)’ and the anthemic ‘Hearts Burst Into Fire’, which was the winner of a poll the band put out online when deciding the setlist for this tour. This brings about the first mass singalong of the set and sees bodies bouncing around the room and pints flying everywhere.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

Tuck tells City Hall that “It’s great to be back in more intimate venues this tour” before ‘The Last Fight’ and ‘Shatter’ keep the crowd going, until they bring it down a notch with classic debut album track ‘All These Things I Hate’, which sees bassist Jamie Matthias on lead vocals during verses and Tuck taking over the reins during the chorus.

I would like to also take a minute to show some love to guitarist Michael “Padge” Paget, as I’ve rarely seen a guitarist on stage noticeably having as much fun, while at the same time make playing seem so absolutely effortless, a master of his craft and then some.

bullet for my valentine tour newcastle

The night continues with more dancing and flying pints during next song, the crushing ‘Scream Aim Fire’, which sees a near infinite number of crowd surfers make their way to the front of the room and across the barrier (“Over the top!” indeed).

They close out the set with a mixture of old and new tracks, ‘Suffocating Under Words of Sorrow’, ‘Rainbow Veins’, ‘Don’t Need You’ and ‘Death By A Thousand Cuts’ before heading offstage and returning with the crunching ‘Your Betrayal’.

The band depart once more, leaving only Matt Tuck onstage for a solo rendition of the opening verse of ‘Tears Don’t Fall’. Before he starts though, he takes the time to show appreciation to the crowd, telling them “We’ve been doing this shit nearly twenty years now, and when we get this kind of reception and love, it never gets old. Thank you for being a part of this tonight, It’s beautiful”. The crowd are in full voice as they sing along to every single word, including the entire chorus without Tuck, before the full band join in and we hear the song once again from the start.

The only thing left to do tonight is wrap up the set, and they do that with ‘Waking The Demon’ as the crowd grasp their final opportunity to lose themselves in the utter chaos of the pit, led on by Matt Tuck demanding they give him “Everything you’ve got!”. The entire room is in motion, a tumultuous tide of flailing arms and bodies as sweat fly amidst the sonic backdrop of

Tonight was the perfect hit of nostalgia, which, coupled with newer material from the two veteran bands of the tour shows that age is merely a number, while Jinjer no doubt will have won over several new fans tonight (myself included).

GENRE IS DEAD!

Bullet For My Valentine Announce First North American Tour In Five Years

Bullet For My Valentine are returning to North America for their first headlining tour in five years.

The band will return Stateside in October for a month-long trek with support from Of Mice & Men and Vended, featuring the sons of Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Shawn “Clown” Crahan. The tour starts October 8th in Montreal and wraps up November 10th in Orlando, Florida.

“Attention please!! So after 5 long years we’re finally heading back to the USA and Canada for a proper headline tour!! We cannot wait to play and see you all again, it’s been far too long,” the band said in a statement. “We’re gonna be bringing our old friends in Of Mice & Men and heavy metal upstarts Vended along for the ride so get ready for some serious mosh pit action!! Make sure you pick up your tickets fast as we’re expecting them to fly out. VIP packages are also gonna be available on this tour for the first time in years. More info to follow. See ya there.”

Tickets go on sale Friday, July 28th at 10 AM local time. Check out all the dates below.

In a recent interview with Mike James Rock Show , guitarist Michael “Padge” Paget talked about the band’s plans in the coming months:

“We’ve got a few more — 10 or 11 more — summer festivals out in Europe to play over the summer. Then we have a little break in, sort of, August-September, and we head out to America for a month or five, six weeks to do a headline run up there. I’m not too sure what’s gonna happen at the end of the year, if there’s anything in there yet. And then we’re gonna stop [touring] and start writing again. So ’24 we’ll be writing an album. And then 2025 we’ll be back. [2025 is] an anniversary of something big,” apparently alluding to the fact that 2025 will mark the 20th anniversary of [our] debut album, The Poison. ”

Bullet For My Valentine recently teamed up with Pendulum for new collab single “ Halo .” The band released a deluxe version of their latest self-titled album last year.

In 2006, Bullet For My Valentine cemented their reputation as British heavy metal's bright young things, and the UK's answer to the current buzz band of the American side of the genre, Trivium. However, they still divide the critics and the fans; depending on which side of the purist divide you stand, Bullet For My Valentine either perfectly capture the zeitgeist with their melodic, riff-laden hard rock, or they are a worrying portent of the genre's dilution into saccharine, chart-pleasing "goo".

So when last November's scheduled shows were cancelled after the front man Matt Tuck finally succumbed to a combination of a punishing tour schedule and bouts of laryngitis and tonsillitis, it was something of an understatement to say that the response was somewhat mixed.

A couple of months later, there seems to be no sign of that changing. For every kid headbanging like it was their last night on earth, there was a pair of jaded hecklers wishing it was. So it was a rather apologetic Tuck who thanked the fans for not deserting them since the postponement.

At heart, Bullet For My Valentine are consummate crowd-pleasers. Despite the fact that their front man is still in recovery (Tuck's vocal coach stopped by on the day of the gig), all the stops were duly pulled out.

While the familiar likes of "4 Words (To Choke Upon)" and "Tears Don't Fall" took their place on the set list, this was a night of firsts; first rescheduled show, first inclusion of a cover version and, most important, the first airing of new material from their forthcoming second album. "Scream On Fire" and "Disappear" indicate that the band have no intention of abandoning their combination of near-poppy choruses in melodic construction with the traditional side of heavy-metal bombast.

Even the genre purists had their moment, with a record-perfect rendition of "Creeping Death" by Metallica. The guitarist Michael "Padge" Padget had mastered the required lightning-speed fretwork with almost laughable ease. Indeed, the only crowd-pleaser to miss the cut was hit "All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me)".

That's not to say that the band were without their "cheesy" moments, as Tuck chose to close the show standing on the drum rise, his guitar perched precariously just above his crotch, both hands in classic satanic salute. On the other hand, maybe that just goes to show that Bullet For My Valentine are more "real" than some give them credit for being.
