Visit us on campus

We’re excited to welcome you to campus for in-person tours. Come see us and find out what the University of Michigan and the College of Engineering have to offer.

aerial shot of campus

Hi, and welcome to the University of Michigan’s  College of Engineering. I’m Raul and I’ll be your tour leader today. I hope you’ll enjoy  the video we’ve created especially for you.

Right now what we’re looking at is the Duderstadt  Center. The Duderstadt library is one of our more popular libraries here on North Campus  and is fondly referred to as The Dude.

It is open 24/7 throughout the year, which  means whether you like studying at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., The Dude can be a great place for you.

There are so many more things to do than  just study in our libraries. For example, our Fabrication Studio is available where you’ll  be able to work on class and personal projects, and you’ll be able to use different  laser cutters, 3D printers and tools.

We are now at the Bob and Betty Bester  Building. Right now our CS faculty and students in cyber security are working  to make our election systems more secure.

This building is an excellent example of  demonstrating the progression of engineering.

At our entrance, we have a  very small piece of the ENIAC, one of the first digital computers ever  built. On the other side, we have a completely programmable staircase that  our students can explore and hack into.

You can see art sculptures all over North Campus  and we love to showcase our students creativity and projects. This is believed to be the world’s  largest stationary, hand-solvable Rubik’s cube.

It was imagined, designed  and built by two teams of engineering undergraduate students  over the course of three years.

Here are some examples of our classrooms.  We try to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment. Most of our classes are  recorded making it extremely easy for our students to review and study. You’ll be raising intriguing  questions in lecture and following discussions  with professors that have the potential to  transform into your own research projects.

What we’re looking at right now is the structures  lab. It’s one of our testing facilities.

Our engineers use a combination  of the strong wall, floor, hydraulic pumping mechanisms and computerized  models to simulate real world conditions inside.

We have strong connections with industry here at  Michigan and the FXB atrium is a shining example.

In 1965, NASA sent Gemini 4 into space which had  the first all-Michigan crew. One of our alumni was the first American to perform a spacewalk. A  few years later as part of the Apollo 15 mission an all-Michigan crew was the fourth team to land  on the moon. Next time you’re here on campus you’ll have a chance to see a small piece of  outer space in the form of our very own moon rock.

Right around the corner from the FXB we have  M-air, a 10,000 square foot, four-story netted scientific facility that enables the study of  autonomy and collaborative robotics in the wild, with emphasis on dealing with the  full range of Michigan weather.

This is the Ford Robotics Building. It’s the  home of Michigan Robotics. The 140,000 square  foot complex will house classrooms, offices, a  startup-style open collaboration area and tailored lab space for a variety of robotic technologies.  The building will include a three-story fly zone for autonomous aerial vehicles, an outdoor  obstacle course for self-driving cars and

dedicated space for rehabilitation and mobility  robots, such as prosthetics and exoskeletons.

And if that wasn’t enough for you, just down the  road we have Mcity, our own advanced mobility research center! Michigan created Mcity to realize  the potential for emerging mobility technologies.

Our partners in industry, government  and academia are Mcity’s foundation and the reason it has become a leader  in connected and autonomous vehicles.

This is the Wilson Student Team Project  Center. It empowers student teams by providing a facility in which they  can experience hands-on development and fabrication. It allows members to use  a practical application of engineering.

The Wilson Center provides groups with a unique  opportunity to interact with one another, share ideas and showcase their projects — like our Solar  Car team, M-Fly, Baja Racing and so many more.

We are now inside the Lurie  Nanofabrication Facility, where our researchers work on the  nanometer scale. If you’re wondering, one nanometer is about the length that your fingernails will grow in one second. The LNF is here to provide our faculty and students  access to advanced nanofabrication equipment.

The last thing I wanted to show you is our  electrical engineering and computer science building. Here we are creating the technology  that puts the smart into smart electronics and constantly pushes the boundaries of  research. One of our more recent projects showcases this very principle. This  is Michigan Micro Mote — M3 for short.

M3 is the world’s smallest computer and has opened  the door to a completely new class of computing.

Thank you so much for watching! Whether you’re exploring the cutting edge  of research, solving giant Rubik’s cubes or just studying at The Dude, this is just  a small sample of what we have to offer.

We hope to see you on campus soon!

Japanese Professors Visit Michigan Law

  • International and Comparative Law

Beauty image of the Reading Room windows with Ivey on them

Michigan Law recently welcomed two Japanese professors as part of an ongoing exchange program with the University of Tokyo. Each spent at least a week in Ann Arbor, participating in the intellectual community and sharing their specific areas of expertise.

“I was very glad to visit again,” said Professor Hishashi Harata, who manages the exchange program for the University of Tokyo. “This program provides both communities with opportunities to meet scholars abroad and to open eyes to the laws and the society of the counterpart country.”

Harata has visited Michigan Law several times since 2013, including the March 2023 exchange. That was the first year the program resumed after a pandemic pause.

Professor teaching to a well attended class

Professor Kentaro Matsubara, a legal historian who specializes in East Asia, also participated in the exchange, making his first visit to Michigan Law. He was drawn to the program after meeting Professor Rebecca Scott, the Charles Gibson Distinguished University Professor of History and professor of law, at a conference in Germany last year.

“An exchange like this can be extremely beneficial at multiple levels,” Matsubara said. “If one had specific academic themes to discuss with particular members of this faculty, it provides a valuable opportunity for scholarly advancement. But even if such prior acquaintance with each other’s work did not exist, the experience of interacting with scholars and students is invaluable for those of us visiting.”

Discussing their research

Professor teaching in front of a class

Matsubara drew on his research on the property regime and social structures in China for his presentation topic.

“This was partly due to reading some of Rebecca Scott’s work, which inspired me to look at some basic legal categories, such as family or property, as social constructs that involved some socio-legal fiction,” he said. “And this allowed me to frame some of the observations I made about historical Chinese society in this context.”

Harata, who instructs both graduate and undergraduate students on the conflict of laws at the University of Tokyo, also elaborated on his research for his lunchtime presentation.

“I do my own research on global value chains and multinational enterprise groups in our current globalized era and on the history of international society in the pre-World War II period, focusing on Manchuria from the 1920s to 1930s,” he said.

He presented a historical reflection on facism in Japan in the 1930s and also joined a workshop on international law organized by Kristina Daugirdas, the Francis A. Allen Collegiate Professor of Law and associate dean for academic programming.

Teaching opportunities

Daugirdas herself has participated in the exchange program, visiting the University of Tokyo in May 2023. She said the program, which she manages for Michigan Law, contributes to the intellectual life of the Law School community.

“As somebody who writes about international law, it’s not good to interact with an exclusively American scholarly community,” she said. “I presented to the International Law Colloquium at the University of Tokyo and appreciated the opportunity to share my work with an audience from a quite different part of the world.”

This spring, Michigan Law Professors Nina Mendelson and Kimberly Thomas will travel to Tokyo. Additionally, Columbia Law School, the third partner in the program, will send one professor.

“They will have an opportunity to teach to students who are trained in law in a different legal system, which is a rewarding but also informative experience,” said Daugirdas. “It can highlight some of the features of US law that are distinctive in a way that doesn’t come through when you are teaching exclusively or almost exclusively to a group of students whose only legal training is in the US legal system.”

Breaking news, son of hamas founder blasts student supporters in us: ‘those pro-palestine need to go to a mental asylum’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The son of one of the founders of Hamas has blasted the terror group’s student supporters in the United States, accusing them of participating in Hamas’ brutal crimes and declaring they “need to go to a mental asylum.”

Mosab Hassan Yousef, the son of Hamas founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, made the remarks as he appeared on “Dr. Phil Primetime” last week to debate two anti-Israel student activists from the University of Michigan.

“It’s very disappointing to see Americans supporting Hamas and thinking that Hamas is a cool thing, while Hamas does not respect any of those followers,” Yousef said on the April 2 episode.

Mosab Hassan Yousef is pictured on "Dr. Phil Primetime" on April 2.

The Hamas defector said the bloodthirsty terrorists would “torture them and massacre them with no mercy.”

Yousef went on to explain how the militants refer to their American supporters as “useful idiots.”

Yousef, who defected to Israel in 1997 and became a spy for the Shin Bet intelligence agency, insisted that anti-Israel protesters “don’t know what they’re supporting.”

He called Hamas a “monster that has been hijacking an entire society and endangering the entire Middle East, pushing the world toward a global war.”

“What’s happening is insanity,” he continued. “Those pro-Palestine need to go to a mental asylum.”

Yousef said he knew what he was talking about because he spent time in prison with Hamas leaders.

The anti-Israel activists are seen debating Yousef on the Dr. Phil show.

“I was born there and part of that culture, part of that religion,” he explained.

“Some people hear about Hamas or they see an avatar of a Hamas fighter carrying a rifle, a ‘freedom fighter,’ and they think it’s a fancy idea to support such a monster.”

When Yousef then took part in a debate with University of Michigan students Salma and Zaynab, he accused them of wearing keffiyehs — traditional Palestinian scarves — to distract from the fact that they have no legitimacy to speak on behalf of the cause.

Zaynab is pictured speaking on the Dr. Phil show.

“On what authority do you speak?” he asked, rhetorically. “You only speak on the authority of Hamas propaganda.”

Zaynab interjected, asking why he believed she was simply reciting Hamas talking points.

“Because if you were a decent human being, you can say that the thousands who were killed on Oct. 7, that was a crime against humanity. It was a genocide,” Yousef shot back.

New York City students joined pro-Palestine demonstrators during a citywide school walkout calling for a permanent ceasefire at a rally in front of the main branch of the New York City Public Library on February 16, 2024 in New York City.

He went on to say that the student activists are proving that Hamas wants to completely destroy Israel.

“We have the problem with the pro-Palestine [people] who are actually giving Hamas cover. They are participating in the crime,” he told the young women.

“I think enough is enough, and now it’s proven — and you’re helping Hamas prove it to the world — that Palestine depends on the destruction of the state of Israel,” he continued.

Students from Baruch College march to join a demonstration in Times Square to express solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in New York City, U.S., October 13, 2023.

“You cannot even condemn Hamas and say what they did on Oct. 7 was an act of a savage group.

“And this is not acceptable, and we are not going to agree to it. And I tell you something: For the next 10, 20 years, the Palestinian people will pay the bill that Hamas has caused and most likely in blood.”

Even Dr. Phil took aim at the student activists after they refused to say whether they condemned the terrorist attack.

“There are some things that are just fundamental human decency, and when I ask you if what happened on Oct. 7 is something you condemn, and you say, ‘Well, you have to look at that by looking at hundreds of years of conflict.’ No, you don’t,” the TV show host said.

“That’s either right or it’s wrong — and I don’t need a hundred years of conflict to know it was wrong,” he said to raucous applause.

“Let me tell you something,” Dr. Phil continued, “when someone comes over a fence and goes into someone’s house and burns their infant in its crib, I don’t give a damn why they did it — it’s wrong.”

Stud LB, Miami Commit Elijah Melendez To Visit Michigan, On Flip Watch

Stud LB, Miami Commit Elijah Melendez To Visit Michigan, On Flip Watch

Michigan is looking to flip the athletic linebacker away from Miami Hurricanes.

  • Author: Brandon Brown

In this story:

Michigan linebacker coach Brian Jean-Mary and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale might end up being a very solid one-two punch on the recruiting trail. For the time being, they have the attention of at least one big time prospect who happens to be committed to his hometown favorite.

Per Brice Marich of 247 Sports, Michigan is getting ready to host Miami commit Elijah Melendez for a three-day unofficial visit.

Massive visit news: Top247 LB and #Miami commit, Elijah Melendez ( @Babyman3J ) has confirmed that he will be taking an unofficial visit to #Michigan for a three-day trip starting Saturday to Monday. He also has locked in an official visit to return to Ann Arbor on June 7th. pic.twitter.com/8LIAbOkfwH — Brice Marich (@BriceMarich) April 8, 2024

Melendez visited Michigan back in November for U-M's big win over Ohio State, so he's definitely familiar with the program and he's obviously very aware of what the Wolverines are capable of. He's been committed to Miami since December, and the Canes are obvioysly much closer to home and willing to dole out big money when it comes to NIL, but Melendez has been very impressed by Michigan. Getting him back on campus this weekend with a full complement of coaches is going to go a long way with him.

The 6-2, 225-pounder out of Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola is viewed as a versatile linebacker who has a great combination of both size and speed. He's more of a thumper and tackler than he is a space player, but he definitely has the quickness and athleticism to play sideline to sideline. If Michigan can pluck him away from the Hurricanes, that would say a lot about where the program is right now, especially on the recruiting trail, under new head coach Sherrone Moore.

Internships pave the way towards careers for 'Canes

Taken from Brickell City Center in Miami's financial district.

By UM Admission 04-09-2024

Getting out into the workforce while still in school provides immeasurable value in getting firsthand experience in a particular industry. Interns get to work with other professionals, work under high stakes, report to a director, learn from colleagues, and so much more.

The benefit is industry knowledge and insight, with the added bonus of having relevant experience to showcase on your resume.

Three ’Canes are taking advantage of internship experience to get firsthand accounts of their industries of interest. Let’s meet them.

Neal Daniel, ITD major.

Neal took an extremely strategic approach to his internship experience. As an Innovation, Technology, and Design major , internships are baked into the curriculum. Students require at least six internships before graduating. Neal saw this as an opportunity to narrow down what industry would suit him best. “Through my internships, I’ve had the opportunity to explore various industries, gaining insights into the kind of work and environment that resonates with me for my post-graduation plans," he said.

Simran Arora, Business Technology and Analytics double major.

Simran utilized networking opportunities within the Miami Herbert Business School to capitalize on her internship at local fintech startup, Nespy. As an intern working at a startup, the job inherently covered a lot of ground. “I gained experience in everything from lead prospecting to app testing, and had the opportunity to collaborate with the founders,” she said. Those founders happened to be UM alumni and provided for a more enriched experience for Simran.

Jalen Fertig, Music Industry major.

During his sophomore year, Jalen interned at Warner Media as a marketing representative. He moved to LA for the summer to extend his internship and got into the artists and repertoire division for Republic Records (think Taylor Swift, Drake, Ariana Grande). “It was the best experience of my life,” he said. That internship further solidified his passion for entering the scouting realm of record labels and music publishing. Today, Jalen works for Warner Media’s creative agency called 1824, scouting local talent and planning events and activations on campus and in the greater Miami area.

These three ’Canes are just a few of the thousands that get to experience their industry from the driver’s seat. Curious to see what internship opportunities await you? Use this Toppel Career Center tool to search for opportunities by major .
