First things first: there's not really any such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . Whether your holiday to the Indian Ocean’s pièce de résistance is a romantic escape, a getaway with friends or a solo adventure, you're in for an incredible experience.

That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. Our seasonal guide to the Maldives will ensure you don't pick the wrong month for a relaxing honeymoon or miss out on the underwater experience of your dreams.

January to March is the best time for fantastic weather

If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.

Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

April to August is a great time to bag a bargain

Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.

Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.

June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives

June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.

July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations

The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.

Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.

October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting

Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.

If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.

December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun

Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. At the Hard Rock Maldives and the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort , for example, Santa typically makes regular visits on his jet-ski, and almost every resort will drape its palm trees with fairy lights.

One way to offset the higher prices is by opting for a resort that can be reached by speedboat (the cost of which is normally included in the room rate), rather than a more expensive seaplane journey. Weather-wise, expect around seven hours of sunshine a day and daytime temperatures of around 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures are slightly cooler, but still hover around a perfectly pleasant 20°C (68°F) – the ideal temperature for a post-Christmas-dinner dip in the ocean, we reckon.

As a general rule of thumb, remember that the islands' high season runs from November to April, while low season lasts from May to October.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Smaller Crowds

Since the Maldives consists of nearly 1,200 islands spread across 35,000 square miles, you can usually expect desert-island solitude here no matter when you visit. Popular resorts and dive sites can fill up in the high season, but outside the bustling capital city of Malé, truly large crowds are fairly rare.

That said, if you want the best chance of having an island (almost) to yourself, you might want to visit between May and October. This touristic low period coincides with the island's rainy season — so, while a trip at this time might mean less-than-perfect weather, it also means maximum seclusion. This is especially true in May and June, which typically see fewer visitors than any other months.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Good Weather

The Maldives offers tropical warmth throughout the year, so it may seem hard to call any one season better than the others. To understand the climate here, though, remember that the usual four seasons — spring, summer, fall, and winter — aren't as important as the archipelago's big two: dry season and wet season.

The dry season, between November and April, offers Maldivian weather at its best. Temperatures are almost always in the 80s, perfect for days spent relaxing on a beach, and rainfall is scant, particularly from January through March. Humidity can be expected in this season (and throughout the year), but otherwise, conditions should be ideal for a sunny seaside trip. Just remember that this pleasant weather does make dry season the most popular — and, therefore, expensive — time of year.

The wet season, meanwhile, runs from May to October, and its name is no joke — some islands can experience up to nine inches of rain per month at this time of year. While short afternoon storms are very common during wet season, back-to-back days of pure sunshine aren't unheard of. Because of this variability, rainy-season visitors should simply be flexible and ready to adjust plans on the fly in the event of inclement weather.

Most Affordable Times to Visit the Maldives

Yes, even a visit to the Maldives can be affordable if you know how to plan. Since most travelers visit during the dry season, the rainy season from May to October is the best time to save. At this time of year, airfare is less expensive, package deals are more common, and even those beloved bungalows (while still pricey) see significant markdowns in price. Booking in advance can also help reduce costs.

Even outside of the low season, though, some general tips can help you snag a Maldives vacation on a budget . When it comes to flights, try getting more creative than booking your local airline's most straightforward route. Low-cost carriers in Asia and even Europe offer bargain prices on flights to the Maldives, so flying to an international hub first and then hopping on a budget flight to Malé can net big savings. To save money on accommodations, try staying at an Airbnb or a locally run guesthouse instead of a traditional high-end resort. You might miss out on some luxury touches, but you'll still get to enjoy the islands' gorgeous beaches and stunning sea life for a fraction of the cost.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Diving and Water Sports

In addition to wet and dry seasons, there are also seasons in the Maldives when different water sports are most popular. There's no shortage of activities to enjoy here in or on the water, from surfing to boating to scuba diving, but the best time of year for one won't necessarily be the best time for all.

If you're interested in an action- and adventure-packed surfing trip, you'll want to plan your visit for a time with choppier waters and bigger waves. The May-to-October wet season is best for this, but February through April can also see good swells if you'd rather travel without the risk of rain. For snorkeling and kayaking, the opposite rules apply. The best time for these slower activities is December and January, when waters are calm.

Diving, though, is the true king of Maldivian water sports. The archipelago is famous for its hundreds of dive sites, from colorful coral reefs to offshore shipwrecks. Whether you want to try a beginner-friendly spot like the UNESCO-recognized Baa Atoll or a more advanced environment like the shark-filled Fuvahmulah Atoll, you'll want to schedule your trip for a time with good underwater visibility to make the most of the country's world-renowned diving . For the best conditions, try visiting between January and April.

Best Times to Visit the Maldives for Bioluminescence

You can also see bioluminescent plankton while in the Maldives. These naturally glowing organisms make nighttime on the islands particularly magical when they light up the archipelago's beautiful beaches . Bioluminescence is typically most common during the rainy season, since that's when the most plankton are around — but this phenomenon is more tied to environmental factors like water temperature and salinity than to a particular time of year. (In 2022, for instance, holiday visitors got a special treat when the islands lit up with plankton around Christmas and New Year's.) Worst Times to Visit the Maldives

Some visitors attest that August is the worst time to visit since it's smack-dab in the middle of the wet season. However, October is generally the rainiest month, so avoiding either of these times might be best for your trip. While those little bungalows can be luxurious, it would probably put a damper on your island vacation if you never got to leave the room.

If you're on a budget, though, the popular dry season may be the worst time for you to visit. While a trip to the Maldives is almost always pricey, costs are highest in the peak months of November to April — making the rest of the year a better bet if you're in search of good deals.

The best time to visit the Maldives is from November to April, when there is little precipitation and warm temperatures, ranging between the high 70s and mid-80s. The island nation is warm and sunny year-round, but it does experience a dry season and a rainy season, and there are pros and cons to each. Though the period between November and April promises the best weather, this is also the busiest time of year and, as such, the room rates at resorts are expensive. However, since each resort inhabits its own island, you won't have to contend with the same intensity of crowds like you might during the high season in another tropical destination with more public facilities. Check the number of villas and size of the island before you go, so you can get an idea of how tranquil the island will be.

May to October is considered the rainy season, with the southern atolls experiencing the most rain. During this time, islands see between 7 and 8 inches of precipitation monthly and often strong winds. However, showers tend to be short and punctuated by sunshine. Some days, it only rains overnight, while there can be many hours of sunshine through the day, if you're lucky. Some travelers find the better deals available during rainy season make it worth the gamble of visiting, although July and August are the riskiest months. However, the term "deal" is relative, since the Maldives is a pricey location year-round. This time of year is also popular with surfers because the area sees bigger waves and better swells for surfing during these months.

Note that the private resorts are permitted to celebrate non-Islamic holidays, including Christmas, Easter and Diwali, but you will not find them celebrated on inhabited islands.

But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

• Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
• Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
• Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
• Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

• One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
• The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
• Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

• May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
• Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

When to find the best weather in the Maldives

The Maldives is often warm and sunny throughout the year, but its climate is split into a wet season and a dry season. During the dry season, from November through April, temperatures hover in the mid- to upper 80s. Average precipitation is lowest from January through March, but even during the dry season, an afternoon rain is possible.

During the wet season, from May through October, some islands may experience upward of nine inches of precipitation in a single month. Although this sounds like enough to ruin a vacation , most rain comes from fast-moving afternoon storms, allowing visitors to enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures the rest of the day.

When to visit the Maldives for events

The Maldives, which is largely a Muslim country, has a number of religious holidays and events throughout the year. Many are based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar many of us are familiar with. If there's a specific religious event you'd like to experience in the Maldives, be sure to check the exact date before booking travel.

For Maldivians, Independence Day is one of the most important days of the year. The holiday is usually celebrated on July 26, which is when the country gained its independence from Britain in 1965. During Independence Day, there are festivities, parades and performances across all the islands. The capital city, Malé, is one of the best places to experience the holiday.

Republic Day, which occurs in November, celebrates the establishment of the Republic of Maldives in 1968. Festivities include marching bands, parades, speeches, ceremonies and children walking the streets wearing their best clothes — a true display of the country's culture, heritage and pride.

Huravee Day, which signifies the day Sultan Hassan Izzuddeen freed the country from the occupation of South India in 1752, is celebrated with dancing and traditional meals. The celebration date is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, so it varies annually. In 2020, Huravee Day was celebrated on Jan. 28. In 2021, the holiday will fall on Jan. 16.

Since the Maldives is a Muslim country, Ramadan is an extremely significant holiday. The actual date varies with the Islamic calendar (it takes place on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar). The holiday is usually celebrated for about a month in the spring. During Ramadan, locals fast during the day, but restaurants and resorts operate as normal. Many restaurants do offer special meals for Iftar — the evening meal breaking each daily fast — which often comprise local foods and juices not typically served the rest of the year.

When to visit the Maldives to see bioluminescence

In oceans and bays around the world, bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water, almost like an aquatic imitation of the aurora borealis. While many animals on both land and sea emit a bioluminescent light (think: fireflies and jellyfish), the plankton often appear at the water's surface, giving it a bluish glow.

One of the most popular places to view the plankton is off of Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, although it's possible to see the phenomenon in any of the atolls. Your best bet is to visit between June and October, which is when the plankton are typically present.

Bioluminescence can only be seen in turbulent water, such as in the waves on the shoreline or wake from a boat. It can also appear after stirring the water with your foot or hand.

Flights to Malé are generally cheapest in the late fall and winter, although the exact months vary depending on where you are flying from.

According to Skyscanner.com , flights from Miami, New York City and Chicago are cheapest in February. Average airfare from New York is $642, $710 from Chicago and $739 from Miami.

Flights from the West Coast — Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles — are cheapest in November. Los Angeles is the cheapest city to fly out of overall, with the average cost of airfare around $385. From Seattle and San Francisco, expect to pay around $710 and $700, respectively.

Affordable lodging

Lodging prices vary, depending on exactly where you're staying, but it's a safe bet to say the wet season — specifically, May through August — is the cheapest time to stay in the Maldives. According to travel search site Kayak , average hotel prices are at their lowest in May, when you can expect to pay $369 per night. Prices peak at around $705 per night in December. With the exception of November, when prices are in the mid-$500 range, expect to pay in the mid-$600 range the rest of the year.

Chances are, you want to go the the Maldives because you've seen how truly beautiful it is. Dotted like ink blots in the clear, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago made up of more than 1,000 islands, 200 of which are inhabited. Wet season starts in May and ends in October, with considerably more rain and occasionally strong winds. November and April are considered ‘shoulder season’, when room rates and flight prices are lower, travelers can make serious savings and weather still averages 88°F.

The Maldives is a bit unique because it doesn’t experience 4 seasons like many places around the world. Instead, it has 2 — a dry season and a wet season.

Let’s take a look at the difference between these 2 seasons, as well as the weather in the Maldives each month. Keep in mind that the islands and atolls are spread out over about 500 miles north to south, so the weather can vary throughout the country.

The wet ( southwest monsoon) season in the Maldives is from May to October . Each island can see up to 9.5 inches of rain in a single month, making it a less popular time to visit for many tourists. However, just because it’s the wet season doesn’t mean there aren’t any sunny days. The weather during this time period is unpredictable and can include a combination of massive rainstorms with multiple sunny days.

The southern atolls see more yearly rainfall overall than the northern atolls, but storms are less frequent there and it’s less windy and sunnier overall.

The dry (northeast monsoon) season in the Maldives is from November to April . This is generally thought of as the best time to visit. While this is considered the dry season, it can still rain during this time period. Some destinations are just gorgeous year-round, but when is the best time to go to the Maldives to make the most of the weather in this dream destination? Whether your goal is to relax with perfect sunshine, or you'd ideally like to skip peak season to avoid crowds, planning in advance is important ahead of a trip as big as this.

Chances are, you want to go the the Maldives because you've seen how truly beautiful it is. Dotted like ink blots in the clear, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago made up of more than 1,000 islands, 200 of which are inhabited. Historically a honeymoon destination , the best hotels in the Maldives have shifted the destination up a gear, opening it up further to the realms of solo travel and multi-generational holidays. Between the consistently hot weather, unspoilt sandy beaches , high-design hotels and award-winning restaurants, it’s hard to find fault with this small but mighty contender for winter sunshine.

But there's no denying that it's a bucket list destination for many, so it's understandable that you'd want to plan as much as possible to find the perfect time to go. Here's what you need to know.

There’s no bad time to visit the Maldives, but few places offer such a perfect antidote to the UK ’s long, dark winters. It really does have it all: upwards of eight hours of sun per day, average temperatures of around 28°C, an ocean teeming with wildlife and some of the smartest hotels in the world.

For many, the best time to visit the Maldives is December to April , as that's dry season, with little rain and low humidity leading to bright blue skies, cloudless days and still, balmy evenings. Wet season starts in May and ends in October, with considerably more rain and occasionally strong winds. For scuba divers and snorkellers, visibility is particularly good during the dry season, too, as a result of currents flowing from the northeast (the eastern atolls enjoy the best visibility, with whale sharks and manta rays most commonly spotted between August and November ).

November and April are considered ‘shoulder season’, when room rates and flight prices are lower, travellers can make serious savings and weather still averages 31°C.

When is the cheapest time to visit the Maldives?

The cheapest time to visit the Maldives is during the low season, which is May to November. The low season sees hotel rates drop substantially, with free transfers, free nights and room upgrades thrown in regularly. You risk some cloudy days and light showers, but temperatures remain in the high 20s, so you're still in for a treat of a trip. What's winter like in the Maldives?

The rainy season typically starts in April or  May  and lasts until October or November. The rain is due to the South West monsoon, which causes stormier conditions that can last for days. However, you can expect plenty of dry and sunny periods to occur during this time too.

When is the best time to dive in the Maldives?

You can go diving year-round in the Maldives. The best underwater visibility and weather can be expected from December to  April . You can expect to see everything from manta rays to reef sharks.

Where to stay in the Maldives

Dry Season in the Maldives

The Maldives has an incredibly tropical climate, which means that while there’s a wet and dry season, temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year.

Even in ‘winter,’ temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius. 

The dry season is from November to April, and the peak of tourist season will often run from December through to March. Prices are higher in the dry season, and availability is lower, but the weather will be perfect.

If you’re scuba diving, the water is perfectly clear through the dry season.

November in the Maldives

November is the start of dry season, but it can be the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for bargains. The peak tourist season has yet to begin, but there’s little chance of rain, and plenty of deals to draw in the travelers!

You might be able to catch the last whale sharks around the Maldives before they start heading elsewhere in search of food. The manta rays are still in town, too.

Diving coral reefs still isn’t great, because the water has yet to clear up, but it’s definitely much better than previous months.

In December, you can expect the tourist season to begin in earnest as the countdown to Christmas holidays begins.

While the Maldives is a Muslim nation, a majority of their visitors are often from Western countries, and they make use of their Christmas holidays to visit. 

The weather is lovely in December. The rains are over, and there are bright skies and sunshine almost every day of the week. Take some time off, book into a luxury resort, and enjoy the beautiful weather. 

Prices are definitely on the high side through December, and you’ll need to book your flights and hotels in advance, as the best resorts can often sell out over the holiday period.

January in the Maldives

Prices remain exceptionally high as we enter the New Year; this is not the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for a bargain! 

Tourist numbers are high, but the Maldives is never a destination that’s packed. Hotels, islands, and resorts all focus on sustainability, so even in peak season, you’ll never feel too overwhelmed. 

This can be a great place to spend the New Year if you’re not on a budget and you’re looking for solitude or a romantic getaway with your partner.

February in the Maldives

February can often be the driest month of the year, but you won’t have as high a price to pay for your hotels and flights as you would over December and January!

It’s a wonderful time to be here, with warm weather, clear skies, and zero chance of rain. You can enjoy super-clear diving and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean’s calm waters, and there is plenty of marine life around to keep you enthralled!

March in the Maldives

March can be the best time to visit Maldives too because the weather is excellent. It’s lovely and warm, wonderfully clear, and perfectly dry!

April is the last month of dry season, and it’s a great time to visit the Maldives. The weather is warm, and the skies are still clear, although you might have the odd rain shower towards the end of April.

Enjoy some excellent diving before the water starts to get murkier when the rains arrive, and explore the best white sand beaches in the Maldives and glorious island living that the islands are so loved for.

Wet Season in the Maldives

The wet season runs from May through to October. This is the low season when it comes to tourist numbers. The Maldives gets hit by monsoon-like weather throughout the wet season, but actual conditions can vary. 

You can risk the rain and get a really fantastic deal on luxury accommodations and cheap flights. It’s worth the risk for the savings, in our opinion, as there’s always plenty of time to relax in your luxury hotel!

While Scuba diving isn’t necessarily good for visibility, the vast amounts of plankton and algae in the water attract some pretty incredible creatures.

The wet season is the best time to visit the Maldives if you’re looking to swim with whale sharks or giant manta rays, as they are here to feed!

May in the Maldives

May is the start of the rainy season, but the reality is that you’d be pretty unlucky to get caught in a monsoon deluge straight away!

May is more of a transition month; you can still expect to see lots of sunshine and dry weather, mixed in with the odd thunderstorm and rain shower.

The water definitely starts to get choppier, but experienced divers will still have a great time enjoying the dive sites, as the water is still exceptionally clear. 

You can start to pick up a few good deals in May, so it’s an excellent time for anyone looking for a cheaper holiday.

June in the Maldives

In June, the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, but it’s not all rain and monsoons.

The weather is wonderfully warm, but still not too humid; you will have a few days of sunshine and clear skies if you booked a getaway in June.

It’s a good time for a deal as hotels and resorts try to draw in tourists. Even if it does rain, you can simply enjoy the luxury facilities at your resort.

Relax with a massage, enjoy a few cocktails, or make the most of the wind and choppy seas for some action-packed water sports.

July  in the Maldives

In July, the weather gets worse. This isn’t the best time to visit Maldives if it’s clear skies and sparkling sunshine that you’re looking for. 

Expect heavy thunderstorms and lots of rain. Scuba diving is challenging because of the rough seas and lack of visibility, but you will be able to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they start to appear to feed on the ever-growing mass of plankton in the waters. 

Prices are reasonable in July, and 26th July is Independence Day; you can participate in nation-wide festivities and cultural events!

August in the Maldives

August sees a bit of a respite from the rain and the monsoon, although the weather can still be quite rough.

As it’s the school holidays in many parts of the world, tourist numbers start to pick up in August, so prices can begin to climb, despite this being the rainy season. 

Unless you can only travel in August, though, there’s no real benefit to visiting the Maldives right now. You’re better off waiting for the drier weather or scoring a few bargains in earlier months of the wet season.

September  in the Maldives

September can be the rainiest month of the year, so it’s not the best time to visit Maldives if you prefer to stay dry!

It can be wet, windy, and monsoony all through the month. Resorts stay open, though, and you can get some great deals. It’s a really good time for surfing in the Maldives, because the waves can be enormous!

If you are just here to relax and unwind, there’s no reason not to visit in September. 

Enjoy the facilities at your resort, try some exceptional island-style dining, and enjoy the hot temperatures!

The weather continues to get worse; October can be rainier than September. Don’t expect too many dry days, especially at the start of the month. 

If you can, aim to arrive towards the end of the month, when the weather starts to dry up quickly as the dry season approaches. 

This might be your last chance to see whale sharks and manta rays, as they tend to disappear at the end of October (at least in large numbers). You can also take advantage of the big waves to enjoy the fledgling surf scene in the Maldives. 

For many people, October can be a great time to visit to save money, as prices are often at their lowest.

Visiting the Maldives in January

Weather:   With plenty of sunshine and warmth, January is a great time for the Maldives holiday. The weather is hot, with quite comfortable humidity (75%) and cooling ocean breeze. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly while winds from the northeast blow away any clouds, meaning skies are clear and blue.

Despite being the coolest month of the year, a daily average temperature of around 27ºC - 29ºC during daylight hours, so make sure you pack plenty of sunscreen. The sea temperature remains a warm 27ºC. During January, the islands have nine hours of sunshine a day while rainfall averages around 75mm, with just around five wet days in the month.

Hotels:  January in the Maldives is peak season. This is due not only to finest weather, but also to the onset of holidays. Hotel prices are at their top, so it is recommended to book in advance , especially the festive packages Many go to the Maldives to celebrate the New Year and Christmas, which will certainly affect the cost of living. After January 10, hotel prices fall by about 15-20% of the Christmas and New Year offers and keep this way throughout February until early March.

Things to Do:  Start the year in the best possible ways. A calm January cannot boast of significant waves, but if you are not coming here to compete, there will be plenty of waves for surfing in North Male. Lohifushi Island has high stable waves, where the international prestigious O'Neill Deep Blue Open tournament is held. Also popular is the so-called "police island" where surfers can enjoy the waves. Male has a sandy bottom without corals, which is an indisputable plus for a surfer. Also in January you can go windsurfing, water skiing, canoeing, catamaran, scooter and banana boat rides.

Diving & Snorkeling:   The visibility for diving and snorkelling is great. From December to March the water currents flow through the atolls from east to west, this creates fantastic visibility along the eastern atolls. The current is usually strongest over this period. During this time many shark species gather in the eastern side channel entrances in large numbers while the mantas are attracted to the western side where the plankton flows out to the open ocean.

Highlights:   Locals celebrate New Year in the Maldives differently from the rest of the world. Their New Year comes in April, according to the lunar calendar. Therefore, all events taking place from December 31 to January 1 are designed exclusively for tourists. But don't worry about fireworks and New Year's celebrations. The Maldives hosts chic celebrations, New Years parties and masquerades in hotels. It is there that you can enjoy the atmosphere of the New Year under the palm trees.

Visiting the Maldives in February

Weather:   If you visit Maldives during the month of February the weather is at its most reliable with most days having clear blue skies, the occasional white fluffy cloud and very little rain. With plenty of sunshine and warmth, this is a great time for a beach holiday.

Hotels:   February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives, so hotel rates stay consistently high. This is a very popular time for travelling and booking in advance is advised.

Things to Do:   Calm water flat seas around the Maldives during high season are perfect for boat trips of any kind – the surface of the water is often like a mirror and perfect for spotting dolphins jumping in the distance, or turtles coming to the surface for a breath, before diving back down to the reef. Kayaking and paddle-boarding adventures are a must this time

Diving & Snorkeling:   The snorkelling conditions are likely to be better than you could ever dream of. Although the visibility is good for most of the year, in high season it is simply stunning with both divers and snorkelers able to to enjoy diving with manta rays, whale sharks and other tropical marine life, in calmer conditions.

From December to March the water currents flow through the atolls from east to west, this creates fantastic visibility along the eastern atolls. The current is usually strongest over this period. During this time many shark species gather in the eastern side channel entrances in large numbers while the mantas are attracted to the western side where the plankton flows out to the open ocean.

Visiting the Maldives in March

Weather:  In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Rare short rains of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures.

Hotels:  High season rumbles on, with accommodation booked out across the country. From March 1, hotel prices fall by another 10-12% from the February offerings and remain so until mid-May.

Things to Do:  March sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives. The finest weather coupled with nine hours of uninterrupted sunlight makes Maldives in march a perfect destination to try out all outdoor activities and spend some cherished moments with your loved ones. The clear skies and soothing breeze creates a perfect ambiance for sunbathing as well.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Weather remains idyllic with perfect conditions for snorkelling and diving

Visiting the Maldives in April

Weather:   April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives, with plenty of sunshine and good water visibility; however, there is a slightly increased risk of rain, especially toward the end of the month. This is the official end of the Maldives’ dry season and also a little more humid. Expect more rains towards end of April.

Hotels:  From March 1, hotel prices fall by another 10-12% from the February offerings and remain so until mid-May.

Things to Do:  Fewer travellers venture to the Maldives in April, but it's a great time to visit with overall pleasant weather, good diving visibility, fun surf conditions, and agreeable sailing weather.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.

Highlights:   The spirit of Easter in The Maldives is all about hope, love and joyful living. The celebration comes with a special Easter dinner followed by beach orpool parties with the in-house bands and DJ and a treasure hunt to make your day more fun-filled and entertaining.

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. It lasts for a sacred 30 days during which Muslims must observe strict fasting. Only children, the elderly, pregnant women and those who are not able to fast for medical reasons are exempt from it. During this period, during daylight hours, it is forbidden to eat, quench thirst, smoke, listen to music loudly ... and a number of other prohibitions. After Ramadan comes the Great Feast, or Eid al-Fitr - the holiday of the end of Ramadan. Festivities on this occasion usually last for several days. This is the weekend when the Maldivians are just feasting and having fun from the heart.

Visiting the Maldives in May

Weather:   May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of heavy rainfall, but storms usually move through the archipelago quickly.

Hotels:  From mid-May, hotel prices fall again by 50% and stay until early August

Things to Do:  This month has a lot going for it: Fairly reasonable prices, fewer people at the resorts and optimal surf and scuba conditions are just some of the perks.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.

Highlights:   The holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) begins in May although the exact date changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

June is is an excellent time to indulge in activities like whale shark and dolphin trips, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The surface swells during this time can get to about 1-2m especially during June and July which is the main rainy season.

Diving & Snorkeling:   Diving visibility in June in Maldives is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.

During June to November the currents move easterly through the channels. During this time Hanifaru Bay in UNESCO Biosphere reserve on Baa atoll offers some of the best sightings of mantas and whale sharks. They come to the protected area to feed on plankton that has been built up from the southwest monsoon. The underwater visibility is also much better on the western side during this season.

Highlights:   The holy month of Ramadan continues into June. Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the lunar calendar. It lasts for a sacred 30 days during which Muslims must observe strict fasting. Only children, the elderly, pregnant women and those who are not able to fast for medical reasons are exempt from it. During this period, during daylight hours, it is forbidden to eat, quench thirst, smoke, listen to music loudly ... and a number of other prohibitions. After Ramadan comes the Great Feast, or Eid al-Fitr - the holiday of the end of Ramadan. Festivities on this occasion usually last for several days. This is the weekend when the Maldivians are just feasting and having fun from the heart.

Visiting the Maldives in July

Weather:   With seven to eight hours of daily sunshine July is one of the rainiest months in the Maldives. The average temperature in Maldives in July ranges between 27 to 30 degrees Celsius, while the nights are relatively cooler at 25 degrees. The downpours are unpredictable but don't last more than a 30-minutes and the wind speed varies between 11 and 14 knots.

Things to Do:  The sea temperature is 28 degrees Celsius in July, making it pleasant for swimming and other water activities.

Diving & Snorkeling:   During June to November is the southwest monsoon when the currents move easterly through the channels. During this time Hanifaru Bay offers some of the best sightings of mantas and whale sharks. They come to the area to feed on plankton that has been built up from the southwest monsoon. The visibility is also much better on the western side during this season. The wind picks up during this time and the sea can get a bit rougher. There is still many sunny days but for the most part can be quite cloudy. The surface swells during this time can get to about 1-2m especially during June and July which is the main rainy season.

Highlights:   The Maldives Independence Day (26th July) is celebrated in style each year, with various festivities taking place, including parades and performances.

Visiting the Maldives in August

Weather:   Weather: Still hot and sunny August in the Maldives is humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Expect a some showers, wind and storms, 27 - 31°C (average 29°C).

Hotels:   August is vacation time therefore, from August 1, hotel prices rise again by 45% and keep this way until September

Things to Do:  This is a great time for experienced sailors to charter a monohull if the primary goal is to challenge the wind. the weather was the way you wanted it to be. The sun was shining and it was warm. In the evening when you wanted to go to the sea the weather was still very nice and warm.

Constant 30 degrees for 14 days, in one day for 10 minutes of rain! Otherwise only sun!!!!

Except for one day it was sunny and warm. Occasional showers came more at night. The water was pleasant and the air temperature too.

We defied all warnings and advice and went to the Maldives in August, far away from the best travel season. Our wedding on 08.08. and the Maldives has always been a huge travel dream for us. So there was actually no alternative but to dare, because we did not want to wait until winter for our honeymoon. We flew with Emirates over Dubai and spent 10 nights in a pool villa on Baros Maldives. It was magical, magical, uniquely beautiful! Yeah, we had rain once. Usually it was heavy tropical showers that lasted about an hour. After that it cleared up and was sunny. Yes, it was a bit windy on some days, but nothing that would knock down a North German. And yes, in 3 days we had cloudy skies. This was not quite perfect for photos, but it was still hot and the Maldives Resorts also offer a lot of activities during the supposed “rainy season”. Above all, one thing must not be forgotten: For the fun of it, we had asked for an offer for the same flights and accommodation in December – the price was 2.5 times as high as in August! We got a real bargain and had a wonderful time.

We were on Holiday Island in June 2017 and the weather was very nice for 10 days. One day it was cloudy and my husband said: it was raining today. I was looking forward to it, wanted to stand in the rain on this beautiful island. The clouds moved on and it hasn’t rained a drop in 10 days. But we had fantastic pictures of the underwater world. We haven’t been there the last time….. bought us snorkel masks would like to go back to paradise?????????????????????????????

This was already the 3rd time in May in the Maldives and we always had very good weather. With 12 vacation days usually 1 day of bad weather (wind, rain and high waves), otherwise always sunshine and good visibility under water.

Forget the beach: How you can experience the real Maldives

I was on a boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean, about to taste real life in the Maldives .

A crew of fishermen from Sun Siyam Iru Veli , located in the Dhaalu Atoll, set up the fishing lines. We were anchored off the shores of the nearby local island Bandidhoo, where people fish tuna for money and smaller reef fish for their tables. 

The task seemed simple enough: bait attached to a hook tied to the end of a fishing line, which I was to hold by hand. As the line dropped to the reef, I was to wait for the feel of a fish nibbling on the bait. Then I’d just pull the line by hand, and voilà: a catch. No poles or spears required. 

Long-line fishing is a generations-old tradition in the Maldives, a way of life for its people. Living in an island nation where not much grows, Maldivians sustain themselves off fish and coconuts. Not only is it an ancient practice, but long-line fishing is sustainable, taking just a few fish at a time with minimal damage to coral reefs or bycatch. 

I quickly learned that I was not a natural long-line fisher. For the next hour, I mistook the moving current for a gullible fish when I was actually the gullible one. Other times, the fish was stealthy enough to take the bait without me feeling anything at all.

Instead, I watched the fishermen work their magic. The line danced in their hands, flying up and down. Sensitive to the slightest movement going on 65 feet underwater, they knew the exact moment to start pulling the line up and win the battle against the fish. 

As the sun set over the water, we caught nine fish, including emperor fish, batfish and humpback snapper. 

Although the rest of the fish went to the fishermen to enjoy at home, one snapper would make a reappearance the following day. For lunch, I enjoyed the red snapper, grilled to perfection and sliced raw into sashimi. 

While the Maldives is renowned as a romantic, luxurious destination where people can enjoy the sunshine, soft white sand and gentle lapping turquoise waters, it’s also packed with history and culture. While everyone should spend some time relaxing at the beach , the atoll nation offers way more for travelers to do – and learn more about life in the Maldives. 

Like most things in the Maldives, most activities are unfortunately pricey, especially since booking through a resort is pretty much your only option.

Long-line fishing is just the beginning. Here are eight other activities in the Maldives beyond simply lounging on the beach:

Go fish, Maldivian-style

Sunset fishing was hands-down my favorite excursion in the Maldives. Watching the fishermen in action was exhilarating, even though I couldn’t get the long line fishing down myself. Partaking in the ancient fishing tradition was a peek into real Maldivian life – and against the most gorgeous of backdrops: the sun setting over the ocean. To pick which fish to eat the next day and how it would be prepared made the experience extra rewarding.  

Check out the marine life

The Maldives is rich in marine biodiversity. Guests can snorkel and dive with whale sharks in southern waters and alongside manta rays in the north. At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, I went on an afternoon snorkeling tour, a 20-minute boat ride from the resort, and swam along the reef, an uninhabited island. Dropping about 100 feet, the reef was overflowing with marine life. I spotted a plethora of tropical reef fish along with three Hawksbill turtles – the most common type in the Maldives – and a white-tip reef shark. 

Even on resort grounds, travelers have plenty of opportunities to easily witness marine life – I spotted a pod of dolphins swim past me on my sunset fishing excursion and baby reef sharks around the shoreline by my villa at Sun Siyam Iru Veli in the mornings.

Explore the ocean … at night

Most resorts in the Maldives also have a house reef, where colorful clownfish and triggerfish swim around anemones and soft coral. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi , guests can request a nighttime snorkeling activity, where they dive in after the sun sets to see the reef in another light, literally. 

The gear was simple. I slipped an orange filter over my snorkel mask, secured with a band, to eliminate the fluorescence caused by my blue light flashlight. This light source would make all the difference, as the soft coral and anemones absorbed the blue light, casting neon greens and reds back. The bright red anemones swayed in the dark and soft coral glowed, showcasing intricate brain-like textures and patterns not noticeable in daylight.

Coral reefs play a critical role in the very existence of the Maldives; without them, the islands would be damaged by strong waves. Maldivians also rely on the fish from reefs for their livelihoods. Guests can participate in coral restoration alongside on-staff marine biologists at multiple Sun Siyam Resorts with coral planting. In this activity, I fastened coral fragments to a metal frame that’s later placed in the ocean to hopefully regrow and thrive. 

Visit a local island 

Sun Siyam Resorts offers travelers the chance to get off the resort island and witness everyday life for Maldivians. Guests can sign up for a local island tour, which takes them to a local fishing village to meet community members and see the school and local shops. I went on a local farm tour, where I got to see how some of the produce, such as papaya, that’s served in the resorts are grown. 

Watersports galore

In the Maldives, the ocean is the main attraction. Siyam World Maldives way offers more than the typical jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks. Guests of all ages can clamber around on the Indian Ocean’s biggest floating waterpark, made up of inflatable obstacles. There are also electric surfboards, kite surfing, banana boats and underwater jetpacks. I rented a seabob, a diving scooter that let me glide up and down underwater like a dolphin at up to 13 mph. It was a strange sensation, but definitely took snorkeling to the next level. 

Visit an uninhabited private island

Over 83% of the Maldives’ 1,192 islands are uninhabited, allowing travelers to bask in unspoiled tropical landscapes. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, I was able to enjoy untouched nature and be the only present human there. Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and its sister resort, Siyam World, also share a small private island where only palm trees exist (and a restroom facility, so don’t worry about that). Guests can book the private island for picnics and photoshoots, which will be exclusively theirs for the entire time. During the picnic, staff set up a tent for respite from the afternoon sun and served lunch and even champagne. No roughing it here.

Every Friday night at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Maldivian staff share a piece of their culture with guests through traditional song and dance – of course, guests are invited to learn the dance too. In Boduberu, dancers move energetically to the beat of coconut drums and folk singing. The dancing style is said to have come from African sailors who reached the Maldives many centuries ago and is typically performed at special occasions and celebrations. The resort also offers cooking classes, where guests can learn how to make traditional Maldivian dishes, and free workshops such as making your own coconut oil, a staple product for cooking in the country.
