Founded by the First Dalai Lama in 1447, Tashi Lhunpo is one of the four great monasteries of the Gelugpa (or Yellow Hat) tradition, and is renowned for its scholarship in Mahayana Buddhist Philosophy and the Tantric tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959 and the Cultural Revolution from 1966-80 wreaked destruction on the great monastic institutions, including Tashi Lhunpo, which lost many of the precious scriptures, statues and images. Of the 6,000 monks in the monastery, only 250 were able to follow the Dalai Lama into exile, and in 1972, under the patronage of the present Dalai Lama, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was re-established in the Southern Indian state of Karnataka.
Occupying a central position in the Tibetan settlement of Bylakuppe, the monastery is now home to 300 monks, and has once again regained its reputation as an important centre for learning and for the preservation of the culture and traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
Time of the Skeleton Lords is the fourth album from the monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery and their second 30IPS release following 2008’s Dawn Till Dusk, which was lauded by the Rough Guide to World Music as “Exhilarating multi-layered rhythmic recitation of chants: a shimmering monument of polyphonic sonority.” The new album was recorded on location in India, and features sacred Tibetan prayers and ritual music marking the great cycle of life, death and rebirth – the journey of the consciousness through the Bardo, according to Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
Eight Tibetan monks present an exciting performance of sacred masked dance from their New Year festival, interspersed with the mesmerising chant and music of the Buddhist monastic tradition. The dramatic dances, taken from the Gutor Festival before Tibetan Losar (New Year), use colourful costumes and masks. With instruments from the ancient tantric tradition – long horns, bells, cymbals and skull drums – as well as the atmospheric calm of traditional chanting and prayers, the monks evoke the unique atmosphere of their monastery. With introductions to the performance, this show can be enjoyed by all, while providing an insight into the endangered culture of Tibetan Buddhism.
The monks have performed in theatres, arts centres and village halls all over the UK and Europe, and have been in residence at a number of festivals including Glastonbury, WOMAD, Cheltenham, Musicport and Larmer Tree amongst others (and even a guest appearance in Loxfest from The Archers alongside the Pet Shop Boys in 2014), where they have been a very popular addition to the programme. They have recorded a number of CDs, and have had their music broadcast on radio and television on many occasions.

THE POWER OF COMPASSION – SACRED MUSIC AND DANCE
Technical Requirements
MICROPHONES – See Stageplan If possible, show will be performed acoustically. The monks prefer to have a clear stage, so ideally prefer ambient/omnidirectional microphones suspended above the stage. Otherwise if necessary five microphones front of stage with adjustable stands. These will need to be moved between items on the programme, which can be done by an assistant in the group. One microphone centre stage rear. Static/stand microphone for announcements between each item, either stage left or right or off-stage.
LIGHTING General stage lighting, preferably from three directions, should be in a warm amber colour for the chanting. White light is preferred for the dance. For ‘Durdak’ a red wash if possible. If necessary a spot is useful for the announcer at the start of each item.
STAGE Ideal stage size no less than 10m wide x 8m deep x 3m high. Smaller performance areas can be used, minimum 5.5m wide x 4m deep x 2.5m high
The performance consists of dance items and chants. Some of the chanting is performed from a seated position, which may cause sight-line problems in a venue such as a church with fixed pews. In this case, if space permits, a raised platform for the seated chants, with room for five people to sit cross-legged, with about 1ft 6in (.5 meters) in front of them for instruments, space in front used for the dance. This is not necessary for raised stages or venues with raked seating.
Table for centre stage rear approx. 3ft square (1 m sq)
Back Drop – 18ft x 11ft (5.5 x 3.5 meters) – with rings and strings, to be hung if possible. 2 x pillar hangings also available.
Music stand or lectern for announcer.
BACK STAGE Four long tables within easy reach of the performance area to lay out the costumes and instruments. Changes between each piece in the programme.
DURATION First half 55 minutes; second half 45 minutes; interval c. 20 minutes.
FRONT OF HOUSE Three tables for merchandising. Merchandise (handicrafts from the monastery and Tibetan refugees in India, CDs etc) will be managed and sold by the company.

Gomde en en
The online home of gomde centers around the world.
An international centre for the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism in the UK. A national centre for the development of environmental Buddhism.
Gomde, Lindholme Hall was established in November 2009 to support existing Buddhist practitioners and those who would like to find out about Buddhist philosophy and practice.
We are located in the centre of the 3,500-acre National Nature Reserve, the Hatfield Moor. Our 180-acre site is made up of grassland, heathland, peatland and woodland, a beautiful, inspiring and peaceful place. On the international scale, the habitat in which Gomde is located is as rare as the Amazonian rain forest and considered an exceptionally precious part of our national heritage.
We have a small resident group living at Gomde all year round. Throughout the year, we host seminars and teachings from the masters of our lineage, senior monks and nuns and approved teachers. During the summer months, Lama Öser, a senior monk from Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling monastery in Kathmandu is resident at Gomde, leading retreats, seminars, all our formal practice sessions and our regular practice and weekly meditation study group. We have rooms for private supported retreat, host practice and work retreats, space to practise together, listen to teachings, to read and share discussions and an off the grid retreat hut for solitary retreat.
Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche’s vision for Gomde, Lindholme Hall is that it becomes a place of refuge for authentic study, reflection and meditation of the Buddha Dharma, which has at its heart a monastic and lay community. We are currently in the process of obtaining planning permission to increase our facilities to accommodate Rinpoche’s vision. We hope to add a large traditional temple, new single rooms, en-suite retreat rooms, monk’s quarters, a large dining area, resident accommodation and work shop.
Given our location within a rare habitat and the implications of the core teachings of Buddhism, Rinpoche has encouraged us to commit to an environmental strategy that is practical, aspirational and sustainable: in short a living example of environmental Buddhism. Over the past six years, overarching principles have unfolded which guide all of our work. These include:
- Creating a rhythm of life, work and practice that sustains people and has at its core authentic Buddha Dharma.
- Producing energy equivalent to our needs from renewable resources,
- Thoughtfully managing the estate to enhance the landscape and the biodiversity of this rare habitat to make Gomde a refuge for all beings.
- Sustainably harvest the fuel and other natural resources available on the estate in line with conservation policy.
All this has been accomplished so far through Rinpoche’s wisdom, kindness and blessings, linked to the efforts of committed volunteers and generous sponsorship.
We hope you have the opportunity to visit us, our doors, grasslands and woodlands are open to all.

Visiting monasteries in Tibet
By Tibet specialist Duncan
Buddhism came to Tibet partly by way of a marriage. The 7th-century ruler Songtsen Gampo, Tibet’s most celebrated king, took both a Chinese and a Nepalese Buddhist princess as his wives. Today, Buddhism is the lifeblood of the region, bound up with much of what you might associate with Tibet — strings of prayer flags, mountaintop lamaseries and chanting, maroon-robed monks.
If you’re planning a tour of Tibet , visits to monasteries can give you a chance to witness the depth of Tibet’s spiritual life first-hand.
Why visit Tibet’s monasteries?
There are a few reasons for devoting a large portion of your visit to experiencing the monasteries. It’s interesting to see how highly monks are regarded by ordinary Tibetans, and it’s also intriguing to compare how monasteries differ in personality and feel, according to the particular sect of Buddhism followed by their occupants.
And, if you go to Tibet between the end of September and the end of December, you’ll visit monasteries alongside scores of pilgrims. Often farmers or nomads, they venture from the farthest corners of the region to reach the cities in time for Losar, Tibetan New Year.
Accompanying the faithful — many of whom are swathed in heavy travel garments and have walked for weeks to reach these monasteries — is almost a sensory experience. You might walk shoulder to shoulder, pressed together. You hear them uttering prayers under their breath, mumbling chants, shushing their children, and breathing in the incense-sweetened air.
You can read more on what to expect when visiting a monastery (and why they’re so beguiling) in my guide to experiencing Tibet
Some of the best monasteries to visit in Tibet
Drigung til monastery.
This complex, set on a steep hill, is admittedly remote. Getting there entails a four-hour round trip from Lhasa . But, because of its isolation, the monks here don’t see many visitors. When my guide, Tashi, and I arrived, they draped khatas (ceremonial scarves) around our necks as a welcome gesture.
What I like about this place is the chance you might get to walk around the monks’ living quarters. They’re an irregular tumble of dwellings, almost a miniature village, with smoke rising from little chimneys.
The mountain ridges around this monastery are also an important sky burial site. It’s a custom that can be a bit overwhelming for Western sensibilities, but for many Tibetans it remains the preferred form of funeral.
You’re not permitted to watch sky burials taking place, but you might see evidence of them: vultures circling, and coffins draped in sheets destined for the burial site.
Sera Monastery
Sera’s convenient location, just outside Lhasa, makes it a magnet for visitors, both Western and Chinese. Its main claim to fame are the debating sessions that take place, reliably, at a set time each day. Although you’ll likely be joined by a large group of fellow spectators, the debating isn’t a touristy gimmick — it’s part of the monks’ schooling.
You’ll see monks clapping and foot stamping as they make philosophical points to their opponent. The younger ones tend to be more theatrical and animated, while older sages sometimes sit with their eyes closed, nodding along.
Tidrum Nunnery
Nuns wear similar robes to monks and shave their heads, but they don’t share the suvc ame social status in Tibet.
At Tidrum, you can see the workings of a far-flung nunnery, which welcomes few visitors but is within a four-hour drive from Lhasa (with the potential to stop en route at Drigung Til and passing semi-nomadic herder settlements on the approach).
Inside the nunnery, you might hear the sisters chanting, and you’ll also have the chance to walk the hillside overlooking the convent and its valley setting. It’s said Padmasambhava, the mythical forefather of Buddhism in Tibet, spent years meditating in a cave nearby, which you can step into as you explore.
Interestingly, all the images hanging on the nunnery walls are of men, including former lamas and the Panchen Lama.
Your room for the night is at a guesthouse in the valley, where you can bathe in hot springs frequented by locals, who claim the waters have medicinal properties.
Monastery etiquette
This is a bit of a misleading section — there’s actually little real etiquette for monastery visits, except to take off any hats and sunglasses before stepping inside and not to take photographs once inside. It’s also good practice to step over the doorsill without touching it, and to take a clockwise route around.
My advice is to take your cue from your guide (who always accompanies you on visits). I’ve had guides who were very relaxed, and others who doffed their hats and behaved reverentially toward the monks.
You might notice that Tibetan city dwellers from Lhasa are quite blasé around monks, whereas pilgrims from rural areas are very respectful.
You sometimes get to meet some of the monks. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of meeting (save one rather cantankerous chap — ‘don’t mind him,’ my guide said, ‘he’s a hermit and not a fan of visitors’) was extremely warm.

Tibetan Monks from the roof of the world heading for Tipperary
Tipperary performance on september 18.
Tibetan Monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery: From the Roof of the World will perform in Tipperary
01 Sept 2024 9:35 PM
Tibetan Monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery will perform at The Source in Thurles on Wednesday September 18.
The show will take place at 8pm.
Tibet – the Land of Snows: home to Buddhist lamas whose ancient rituals have fascinated people for centuries. Eight Tibetan monks from Tashi Lhunpo Monastery present From the Roof of the World: chant, mantras, music and dance opening a magical window on to a world of reincarnation and mysticism which has inspired audiences in theatres and festivals since they were first seen in Europe a hundred years ago in 1924.
From the mesmerising chant of Buddhist texts to swirling costumed masked dances accompanied by ancient Tantric musical instruments: horns made from human leg bones, skull-drums, cymbals, bells and the great dungchen (long horns), the monks evoke the atmosphere of sacred Tibet: an experience of an ancient, endangered culture.
In 1924, an extraordinary silent film was made by Captain John Noel documenting the ill-fated attempt at the summit of Mount Everest by climbers George Mallory and Sandy Irvine. To promote The Epic of Everest, the filmmakers invited Buddhist monks from Tibet to travel to the west for the very first time to perform their magical masked dance and sacred music at screenings of the film. Unfortunately, the depiction of some of the Tibetan people in Captain Noel’s film, a protest by the Great 13th Dalai Lama and concern about the monks’ performances of ritual dances caused a wave of public outrage, leading to what became known as "The Affair of the Dancing Lamas".
Further attempts at an ascent of Everest were banned by the Tibetan Government, and as a result of the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949 and the later Cultural Revolution, authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture was not seen in the west again for many decades. Now, a hundred years later, the monks of Tashi Lhunpo present the same traditional Cham Dance and monastic music which captivated the pioneering mountaineers a century ago. They are the living embodiment of a thousand years of philosophy and hundreds of years of ancient wisdom distilled into prayers for peace and harmony. Introductions between each of the items of the programme explain the stories behind the dances and the meaning of the prayers. No prior knowledge is assumed or needed.
