REALLY! What qualifies Amanda to talk about golf – really – she doesn’t know zilch. I’m tired of looking at her with her “giggles” and “smile”. Such a waste to have her as an interviewer. CBS needs to get a “grip”.

Amanda Balionis says this player is her favorite to interview

CBS Sports broadcaster Amanda Balionis is now in her fourth year on the job for the network’s golf and football coverage . The 35-year-old’s charisma, astute interviewing skills and easy rapport with players have quickly made her one of the game’s biggest media stars.

While Balionis is responsible for conducting dozens of interviews over the course of a tournament week, it turns out there is one player who stands out as her favorite. On this week’s episode of Subpar, hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz asked Balionis is there’s anyone in particular that she always looks forward to interviewing, and she didn’t hesitate.

Amanda Balionis’ yoga tips for instant zen

“ Jon Rahm ,” she said. “Always, always. I mean, and since our very first interview — you know, there are those guys that you’re just like, you’re built different. And it’s so obvious that he thinks differently, he handles himself differently. He studies philosophy in his downtime because he’s interested in it. He’s just such a well-rounded person, and looks at golf and life in this really holistic way. Really, I had to do a lot of introspection at some point in my life when I went through my yoga teacher training, and then my dad passing away, and figuring out, like, how do you balance life with work when all of those things are kind of all-consuming and intertwining. The things that he talks about, journaling every day, meditation, accepting where you are and who you are.

“I thought he embraced the whole thing — he was under fire for having a bad temper on the course,” Balionis continued. “A couple years ago it was all people talked about. But then you talked to him off the course, he’d be like, yeah, you know what, I had to let it out, and now I’m good. It’s not like he ever gave angry interviews. He was never doing things that were offensive. He was literally just letting it out, and then he was good. He just can’t keep it in. And I loved his acknowledgment, he’s a 20-something-year-old, just saying, yeah, you know what, I’m pretty fiery, I’m pretty passionate, but that’s what makes me great and it’s what makes me who I am and yeah, I’ll try to work on it if everyone’s upset about it.

“He just comes from this place of acceptance — this unbelievable acceptance of himself, and who he wants to be and the golfer he wants to be,” Balionis concluded. “He’s always working at how to be a better player and person in a very holistic way. So I feel like every time I interview him you learn something really insightful, not just about him the player, but him the person.”

Meet stunning CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis who interviews top stars as they walk off from PGA Championship

  • Bob Williams

  • Updated : 7:06 ET, May 20 2023

AMANDA Balionis did not set out to become a golf reporter when she began her career as a sports journalist.

The CBS Sports reporter was not even the biggest fan of golf growing up even though her family is obsessed with the sport.

Amanda Balionis has worked for CBS Sports since 2017

Balionis' maternal grandparents in Pittsburgh met on a golf course, while her parents, Tony and Dana, were avid players.

As a child, Balionis dutifully played in junior golf tournaments but, seeking more athletic endeavors, her attention quickly turned to volleyball and swimming.

But there was always a sense of when, not if, Bailonis would eventually find a passion for golf.

After graduating from Hofstra University with a degree in broadcast journalism, Balionis began her career as a high school sports reporter in the New York area for Verizon Fios Channel 1 and then MSG Network.

At the time, she dreamed of becoming an NFL sideline reporter.

In 2011, Balionis ventured into golf by taking a job at the digital department at the PGA Tour where she appeared on shows such as Trending on Tour, Buy a Mulligan and PGA Tour Live.

It would prove a life-changing moment.

Five years later, Balionis moved to San Diego to work for Callaway Golf as an on-camera host and personality for the golf manufacturer's digital and social channels.

Her big break then came when she covered the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey, for Turner Sports.

It was there she caught the eye of CBS Sports, who hired her the following year.

She now covers virtually every golf tournament for CBS Sports and will be as familiar a face at the PGA Championship in Oak Hill this week as Rory McIlroy , Jon Rahm or Jim Nantz.

"I never expected to be in the golf world. My dream was always to be an NFL sideline reporter,"  Balionis told Sports Illustrated .

"Your journey rarely looks the way you think it's gonna look. Especially when you graduate college.

"I'm so happy that I stayed open to something that I really did not think I wanted. I'm so thankful for the younger me, for jumping into this.

"I was doing college and high school sports in New York and there was something in my gut that said, 'Get out of your comfort zone.' It was a huge leap of faith.

"People were telling me it was career suicide to leave TV to work for a website, PGATour.com. I listened to my gut, and obviously it paid off 10 years later.

"It took a decade to get to the dream job. I can't ever imagine my life without golf now. It's very much a part of me."

Balionis is considered a key figure in the CBS Sports broadcast team and is well-liked and highly-regarded by most PGA Tour pros.

“I think Amanda is a breath of fresh air,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus  told the San Diego Tribune .

"She adds a different perspective to our coverage. She has a lot of credibility with golfers, and they respond well to her.”

Legendary golf anchor Nantz is also a huge fan.

“She is unflappable. It’s live TV – no prompter, no notes, just knowledge," Nantz said.

"And it’s delivered with warmth and kindness – a reflection of who she truly is.”

Perhaps her most memorable moment came after the 2020 Masters when Dustin Johnson broke down and cried during their post-tournament interview.

"He was wearing the green jacket on the practice putting green, Tiger [Woods] had just put it on him and it really just hit him in that moment that he'd accomplished his childhood dream," Balionis told The Big Lead .

"You know, he grew up an hour away from this golf course. This was  the one  and when I asked him the question, I think he really took himself back to when he was a little kid dreaming of the moment and it finally hit him.

"It was pretty incredible to see because we usually see a very in-control Dustin Johnson and we kind of got a peek behind the curtain, which I think was wonderful."

Outside of golf, Balionis works with the charity K9 for Warriors, which helps to train dogs to become service animals for post-9/11 military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

She is trained as a yoga teacher.

In March 2022, Balionis married former University of North Carolina and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Bryn Renner.

Who is Amanda Balionis, the journalist and the probable reason for Rory McIlroy’s divorce?

A manda Balionis, the CBS Sports golf reporter, was working as the field announcer at the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday. Many viewers noticed she was not wearing her wedding ring during the broadcast. Fans have been wondering if she is still married to the football coach, Bryn Renner. She has sparked another off-tour discussion after rumors circulated at several big golf tournaments this year due to her not wearing her ring. This controversy could have gone unnoticed if it hadn’t been for a much more considerable controversy produced by Scheffler’s arrest on the Friday morning of the tournament.

The topic was up for debate due to recent news of several high-profile divorces. PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy and his long-time wife, Erica Stoll, announced their divorce earlier this week, just before the year’s second major tournament .

Who is Amanda Balionis?

Balionis is well-known for her work in CBS broadcasting, covering golf, college football, and the NFL. She has a strong passion for golf, which she inherited from her parents. She was a junior golf player during her childhood but later decided to pursue another sport. She played volleyball for Kutztown University of Pennsylvania for two years before transferring to Hofstra University, where she graduated in August 2008 with a major in broadcast journalism.

She began her career covering high school sports for Verizon Fios Channel 1 and MSG Networks. In 2011, Balionis joined the PGA Tour as an in-house reporter and host. The 38-year-old interviews golfers, sometimes at the driving range and, at times, like after the third round of the PGA Championship, on the greens.

Many observant fans noticed that the journalist wasn’t wearing her wedding ring in her Instagram post while interviewing various golfers. Reportedly, the CBS reporter has also changed her Twitter username to solely Amanda Balionis . The 34-year-old has kept her family life private so far. However, that didn’t stop many from coming up with rumors linking Rory McIlroy with the journalist, especially after her unusually warm interview with the Northern Irish golfer during the Wells Fargo Championship.

Irish golfer Rory McIlroy and their wife Erica sit on the center court to watch Serbia's Novak Djokovic play Japan's Kei Nishikori during their men's singles quarter-finals match on the ninth day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, on July 11, 2018., 2024.

Amanda always brings a positive attitude to the player’s interviews. It is refreshing to have a positive perspective vs social media always looking to humiliate. Thx you Amanda

In addition to Amanda being very pleasant in her interviews, she has the knack of not asking the perfunctory useless questions that were all familiar with i.e. what does this mean to you, what were you thinking, what did you do differently etc. Her pleasant interview demeanor is unmatched in the world of sports journalism.

Amanda is definitely a major asset to the golf broadcasts – I sit up and pay attention when she is on-air! You go girl!!!

So refreshing to see a bright golf commentator who doesn’t open every interview with the standard boring but easy out…” what does this MEAN to you?” Don’t let some slept field producer get in your way Amanda…keep doing your own study on every situation. From someone who spent more than 14 years in broadcasting.

Yo Amanda, GO STEELERS!! ?? I sure hope so. You have to be. Why am I even asking?

Good from the get go, but is getting even better as she seems to be getting more and more comfortable in her role.most importantly she has the ability to put the golfers at ease, and she appears to having great fun herself. She is someone you just like to sit down and have dinner with.

It is refreshing to have a host who enjoys what she is doing and has a gift when talking to some of the golf greats as well as up and coming golfers. She seems to set everyone at ease…

Amanda definitely knows golf for sure. She does great interviews and she’s hot to boot!!! Nuff said!!

Grew up about a mile from where Jordan Spieth now lives in North Dallas. Played all 4 years on the Jesuit High School (now Jesuit Preparatory College) Golf team where Jordan also played. my entire family has played golf in Dallas for decades and have been members at various Golf Clubs around the country–including the Boulders in Scottsdale and the Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club… So, we know a little about golf…

Amanda is terrific. She has worked very hard to be where she is today and is to be congratulated for her desire to excel at her profession. She is attractive, personable and a great asset to the CBS PGA Golf Team Crew! You go, girl!!!

Yeah Amanda is great, and she is gorgeous. I really only watch golf when Tiger Woods is contending in the final round, but Amanda’s presence, poise, and insight certainly livens up the coverage.

Nelly Korda returns to LPGA Tour for Evian Championship after dog bite

The top-ranked golfer in the world is back in the field this week for the major championship in france.

After being sidelined due to a dog bite late last month , Nelly Korda is back.

The top-ranked golfer in the world is set to make her official return this week at the Amundi Evian Championship, one of the five major championships on the LPGA Tour. It marks her first appearance on Tour since she missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship last month.

One day after missing the cut at the major in Seattle, Korda was bitten by a dog while sitting at a coffee shop in the city. That prompted her to pull out from the Aramco Team Series tournament in London last week.

Nelly Korda has WD'd from the LET event in London: pic.twitter.com/0CqdfRGwzr — Gabby Herzig (@GabbyHerzig) June 28, 2024

Though Korda hasn’t gone into details about the bite, she spoke with fellow LPGA Tour member Alison Lee about the experience. Lee was also sidelined earlier this year after her boyfriend’s rescue dog bit her left hand and sent her to the hospital for three days. Her hand quickly became infected after the bite, and she was diagnosed with lymphangitis.

“It's an unfortunate circumstance and definitely scary,” Lee said last week in London, via Golf Monthly . “She got bitten by a dog that she didn't know, it was just at a random coffee shop. I am hoping for a speedy recovery for her.”

Thankfully, Korda’s dog bite sounds like it was far less severe.

Korda has won six times on the LPGA Tour this season, including a dominant stretch where she won in five consecutive starts, an accomplishment that has been done only two other times in Tour history. Korda picked up the second major championship win of her career during that streak, with her victory at the Chevron Championship.

After her win at the Mizuho Americas Open in May, Korda has missed the cut three straight times, including at the past two major championships. She has finished inside the top 10 in her past two starts at the Evian Championship, which is set to kick off Thursday from Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France.

Genesis Scottish Open DFS picks 2024: Our expert loves this former champion

CROMWELL, CONNECTICUT - JUNE 19: Xander Schauffele looks on from the 16th tee prior to the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands on June 19, 2024 in Cromwell, Connecticut. (Photo by James Gilbert/Getty Images)

Following a two-week stretch in the Midwest, the PGA Tour heads across the pond for the Genesis Scottish Open, the only co-sanctioned event between the PGA and DP World Tour. With the season’s fourth major just a week away, many of the world's best players will be using this week as a natural tune-up to the Open Championship given the links-style feel of the Renaissance Club.

Since the co-sanctioning with the PGA Tour, Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy have won this event the past two years, and as is the case with all links golf courses, wind conditions dramatically affect the nature of the Renaissance Club. Schauffele won this event at seven under par, while McIlroy triumphed in calmer conditions at 15-under par. While the Tom Doak design is not a historic Scottish venue that has been around for hundreds of years, the course has proved a great host venue for tournament golf. Both Schauffele and McIlroy will return as former champions, and they will be joined by a strong crop of challengers that includes Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, among others. Let’s dive into the slate.

RELATED:  Genesis Scottish Open odds 2024: Our questions for Rory McIlroy

$10,000 range

Play: xander schauffele, $11,700:.

Already a winner at this event, Xander Schauffele is a great fit at the Renaissance Club due to his power off the tee and elite lag putting skill. Links golf tends to expose weaknesses, and Xander remains one of the most well-rounded players in the game, and an incredibly safe option anytime he tees it up.

Fade: Collin Morikawa, $10,300:

2156808170

While Collin Morikawa is playing some great golf at the moment, I am not in love with the course fit. The Renaissance Club is all about power off the tee and lag putting skill, and I far prefer Morikawa on pure iron tests that emphasize accuracy off the tee. Even the Open Championship that he won required a far more aerial attack than the task at hand this week, and in two appearances at the Renaissance Club, Morikawa has failed to finish inside the top 70.

Watch the below video for our favorite bets and players we're fading for the 2024 Genesis Scottish Open:

$9,000 range

Play: viktor hovland, $9,700:.

2156550279

Dylan Buell

With four top-15 finishes in four appearances at the Open Championship, Viktor Hovland always seems to raise his baseline on links golf courses. My theory on this is simple. The young Norwegian possesses a piercing ball-flight, and he is able to putt around the green far more than he needs to chip. Coming off a top-20 finish at the Travelers Championship where he gained over five strokes off the tee, Hovland is trending up at the perfect time.

Fade: Hideki Matsuyama, $9,400:

Similar to my lack of love for Morikawa, I just don’t love the course fit for Hideki Matsuyama this week. He is by no means a bomber off the tee, and he remains one of the shakier lag putters in this field. The former Masters champion’s links resume certainly leaves a lot to be desired, and he has an MC in his only appearance at the Renaissance Club.

$8,000 range

Play: wyndham clark, $8,100:.

2156677933

Tracy Wilcox

The requisite skill-set I’m looking for this week is power off the tee, great putting and links experience. Clark remains one of the longest drivers in the field, he is an excellent putter, and he has recorded top-25 finishes in both of his appearances at the Renaissance Club. Coming off a top-10 finish at the Travelers Championship, I’m expecting another big week out of the former U.S. Open champion.

Fade: Sungjae Im, $8,500:

While Sungjae Im has been playing some solid golf at the moment, his links resume leaves a lot to be desired. Im has missed both of his cuts at the Renaissance Club, and similar to Morikawa and Matsuyama, I prefer him on shorter, more positional golf courses, and I still have concerns about how his game will translate to a different style of test.

More from Golf Digest

pga tour female interviewer

$7,000 range

Play: robert macintyre, $7,800:.

2159733873

Gregory Shamus

I always have interest in Robert MacIntyre on links golf courses, and I’m expecting another strong performance out of him at the Renaissance Club. Outside of his runner-up finish at the Doak design last year, MacIntyre has also recorded two other top-20s at this event, and he boasts two top-10s in four appearances at the Open Championship. His power off the tee, lag putting ability and experience on links-style courses will continue to pay dividends at the Scottish Open.

Fade: Si Woo Kim, $7,500:

Si Woo Kim has missed both of his cuts at the Renaissance Club, and I’m not sold that this is the best course fit for his skill-set. Si Woo Kim excels on accuracy-biased golf courses that emphasize wedge play, and the Renaissance Club is a power and putting track, two areas where the former Players champion ranks below field average.

Flier: Erik Van Rooyen, $7,000:

Erik Van Rooyen possesses the prototypical skill-set I am looking for this week in terms of his power off the tee and lag putting, and he is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Rocket Mortgage. Van Rooyen has also recorded a 14th and a sixth in four appearances at the Scottish Open, as well as two top-20s at the Open Championship. An underrated links performer in great form … sign me up.

pga tour female interviewer

$6,000 range

Play: nicolai hojgaard, $6,800:.

2155626200

Minas Panagiotakis

Nicolai Hojgaard possesses a ton of upside at this price tag, and he has already recorded a 6th-place finish at the Renaissance Club. Hojgaard remains one of the longer players in this field, and he certainly has the ability to get hot on the greens as well. Don’t be surprised if the Ryder Cupper contends once again at the Scottish Open.
