'Wheel of Fortune Live' Brings America's Game Across the Country — Everything You Need to Know

What is 'Wheel of Fortune Live'? The new traveling game show experience allows fans to play the popular wheel-spinning, puzzle-solving game live.

Feb. 6 2023, Published 7:23 p.m. ET

Have you ever dreamed about being on Wheel of Fortune ? Ever have fantasies of spinning that giant wheel, guessing letters, solving word puzzles, and winning big in front of a cheering crowd? It might be easy enough for most folks to apply for an audition to be on the show itself, but a live experience aims to bring "America's game" right to your hometown. Enter Wheel of Fortune Live , a brand new traveling experience that brings the long-running game show closer to you!

It may not be quite the same as appearing on national TV, but Wheel of Fortune Live has previously toured the country to give fans the opportunity to be closer to the experience than ever in this unique game show experience. As opposed to an applicant flying out to be on the show, Wheel of Fortune Live brings the game to a local town near you. Interested in being a part of the event? Here's everything you need to know about Wheel of Fortune Live!

What is 'Wheel of Fortune Live'? Here's what you should know about how it works.

Wheel of Fortune Live first began in mid 2022. While you might mistake this for a live broadcast of the usual show, Wheel of Fortune Live is touted as a theatrical experience that travels across North America. This live spectacle goes on tour throughout various local towns where folks can have the chance to participate in America's Game. By entering the registration process, you'll be admitted into the audience and be eligible to potentially play in the game.

Of course, it wouldn't be a true Wheel of Fortune experience without some prizes up for grabs. Contestants have the chance to win up to $10,000, a trip to locations like Hawaii and Paris, and other prizes as well.

How is it different than regular 'Wheel of Fortune'?

As its own entity, the Live experience for Wheel of Fortune is noticeably different from the regular version. For instance, these games will not be broadcast for ABC or any other channel or streaming service. Famous Wheel of Fortune personalities Pat Sajak and Vanna White also don't host these shows.

However, American Idol winner Clay Aiken and Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg have previously hosted several events, with new hosts to come for 2023.

The official website also states that the hosts will be "familiar television and media personalities" and to check your local theater for host information.

How do you get selected for 'Wheel of Fortune Live'?

If you're interested in being a part of the action, then you can register for a chance to be selected as a contestant. According to the official FAQ, contestant registration for Live takes place three hours before the show itself starts. Registration closes at showtime, and you may be required to provide a valid ID and your birthday, depending on the venue. From there, however, your selection will be based entirely on chance, so keep your fingers crossed to see if you make the cut.

The official site doesn't have any tour dates as of this writing, but here are some scheduled events for the next few weeks:

  • Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races – Charles Town, WV.
  • Wednesday, Mar. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at EF Thomas Hall in Akron, OH.

Graham Norton to host iconic game show Wheel of Fortune in huge ITV reboot

Graham Norton will host Wheel of Fortune as it spins its way back to ITV in 2024.

Graham Norton is at the helm of the new Wheel of Fortune , which is set to return to ITV1 and ITVX in 2024.

The iconic game show returns to the UK with a series of 8 hour-long episodes, each one seeing some brave new contestants taking on the Wheel and trying to solve word puzzles, in the hope they'll take home some impressive prizes.

The UK edition of the iconic Wheel of Fortune game show originally ran between 1988 and 2001 and was hosted by Nicky Campbell, Bradley Walsh , John Leslie and Paul Hendy during its run.

Now it's back, joining other upcoming game show reboot Deal or No Deal , so there's plenty of classic game show nostalgia for fans to look forward to over the coming months.

An official teaser from ITV says: "In this thrilling game of skill and luck, the turn of the wheel secures a cash value before they pick a letter to help them solve the puzzle.

"For every correct letter they reveal in the puzzle they win multiples of that amount. The pressure is on as they could lose everything at a spin of a wheel which contains ‘bankrupts’ and ‘lose a turn’ and the contestants' entire winnings could be wiped out.

"In addition to cash, they can also win some impressive prizes which are added to their cash pot to help them reach the bonus round. Everything is up for grabs but only one lucky contestant will get the chance to add big money to their cash pot and see if they can take it home."

Who was the first host of Wheel of Fortune?

Nicky campbell.

Nicky Campbell was the first host of Wheel of Fortune in the UK. He hosted the show from 1988 to 1996 for eight seasons. Throughout his tenure on the show, he was joined by Angela Ekaette, Carol Smillie and Jenny Powell.

More like this

Since his hosting days, Campbell has gone on to work in radio and in 1997, he joined BBC Radio 5 Live and presented the mid-morning phone in show for five years before replacing Julian Worricker in the breakfast slot in 2003.

His other television work includes Watchdog, Panorama and he currently co-hosts ITV's Long Last Family with Davina McCall .

Bradley Walsh

Bradley Walsh took over from Campbell in 1997 for just one season, which had 50 episodes. He was joined by Jenny Powell.

Walsh is best known for presenting The Chase , Blankety Blank, Keep It in the Family and Odd One In. He is currently slated to co-present Gladiators with his son, Barney, on BBC One later this year.

John Leslie

John Leslie hosted Wheel of Fortune from 1998 to 2001 for four seasons. Jenny Powell hosted the show alongside him, as well as Terri Seymour for one season.

Leslie is a former Blue Peter presenter and is also known for working on This Morning with Fern Britton. He was also the first studio host for the UK version of Survivor.

Leslie's career came to a halt in 2002 after Ulrika Jonsson wrote in her autobiography that "an acquaintance" had raped her when she was 19. Leslie was named as the attacker on television by presenter Matthew Wright , who later apologised and said he had named him in error. Leslie denied the accusation. He was never charged for offences against Jonsson.

He was charged in June 2003 with assaulting a woman twice in 1997, but the prosecution dropped the charges after new information came to light.

In 2018, Leslie was cleared of assaulting a woman at a nightclub in June 2017 after a two-day trial, and in 2019 Leslie was charged with sexually assaulting a then 30-year-old woman in Westminster in 2008. He pleaded not guilty and was cleared of this charge by a jury in October 2020 .

Paul Henry was the last Wheel of Fortune host and presented the show for one season in 2001, alongside Terri Seymour.

Hendy is a TV presenter and has worked on a series of shows including Don't Try This at Home, Dear Mr Barker and The Disney Club. Nowadays, he writes, directs and produces his own short films.

Wheel of Fortune airs on ITV1, ITVX and STV on Saturday 6th January at 6pm.

The Truth About Winning A Trip On Wheel Of Fortune

Vanna White Wheel of Fortune

A lot of us would love the chance to compete on the legendary game show Wheel of Fortune , and winning lots of cash or an awesome trip would really be the icing on the cake. After all, walking away from the experience with winnings is the object of the game, but what if winning Wheel of Fortune wasn't everything it seemed.

For starters, just doing well on the show is a bit of a challenge. It's one thing to be able to shout out all the answers from the comfort of your favorite chair at home, but actually doing so on live TV is a whole other beast. Former executive producer Harry Friedman told San Francisco's  ABC7  that half the battle includes being the type of person who already likes to solve problems and puzzles.

Host Pat Sajak added that success on the show really rests with a contestant's approach. "The trick is just treat it as a fun experience ... it doesn't hurt to watch a show occasionally because there are strategies involved." And so if one can do all that, and actually win cash, a car, or a trip, what of the victor's spoils. How much do winning contestants get to actually keep?

Wheel of Fortune winnings are taxed

Many of the prizes on Wheel of Fortune seem almost too good to be true. Contestants regularly win enormous sums of money, expensive cars, and trips around the world. It turns out that there is a reason the prizes might feel unrealistic: winners end up paying taxes on everything they take home from their TV experience.

When you win big on the show, the IRS treats the price tag of your winnings just like income: You're taxed in a big way. CinemaBlend explored the case of Wheel of Fortune winner Matt McMahan, who walked away with over $16,000 in cash and two trips worth more than $15,000. The show does allow winners to find less expensive versions of their trips to avoid a higher tax hit. McMahan took this option, ending up with trips for $10,000.

Once the taxes were paid out, McMahan estimates he walked away from Wheel of Fortune with about $6,000 out of over $30,000 in prizes. It really makes you think. When speaking to MarketWatch , he did say that the trips were worth it, saying that even with all the strings attached, "experiences are worth more than money right now."

Wheel of Fortune lands on a cash prize for Graham Norton

bbc travel show wheel of fortune

Graham Norton is already thought to earn more than €2.3million for his Friday night BBC chat show and he's now found a lucrative second job with a reported ‘high-six figure’ salary over at ITV.

ITV has announced that the Corkman, 60, will be fronting a remake of the game show Wheel of Fortune. He is following in the footsteps of his BBC co-stars Gary Lineker and Zoe Ball, who have also taken jobs at ITV recently.

The comedian will host eight episodes of the game show as well as two celebrity specials and we can't wait to watch them!

ITV attempted to bring back the show last year with Alison Hammond hosting but it's understood that the pilots were not deemed strong enough to be commissioned.

Speaking of his new role, Graham said: ‘I’m beyond excited to be bringing such an iconic American show to a new British audience.

'My first ever TV job was a game show on ITV so this feels like coming full circle. You might even call it a wheel!’

Graham's BBC salary is no longer published on the list of salaries it pays its staff because The Graham Norton show is made by his own company, So Television. The BBC refuses to reveal what it pays to independent companies, saying the information ‘commercially sensitive’.

However, in May 2021 it was revealed Graham received £3.23million (€3.75million) from his business though not all of it is thought to have been profits from his work at the BBC.

While Graham is delighted with his new role, bosses at the BBC are understood to be less than impressed and frustrated that ITV keep poaching their biggest stars.

Wheel of Fortune is the latest programme to be remade with classics such as Gladiators, Deal or No Deal and Big Brother all getting the revamp treatment recently.

‘Celebrity Wheel of Fortune’: See Robin Thede Solve Impossible Puzzle in Finale (VIDEO)

Wheel of Fortune Casinocade Arcade Game

Wheel of Fortune Casinocade Deluxe Arcade Game

Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Season 4 comes to a close on Monday, May 13, and spinning the wheel this week are Neil deGrasse Tyson ,  Veep ‘s Tony Hale , and  A Black Lady Sketch Show ‘s Robin Thede . TV Insider has an exclusive look into their face-off that shows the stars trying to solve a puzzle about fame. Fitting!

The Bonus Round category is “People,” and the players start out with little help from the letters they call in the clip above. Thede, Hale, and Tyson each guess a letter that only has one space on the board, and Thede cracks up the audience when she sarcastically says “cool” in response to the excess of blank spaces. Hale gives a throwaway guess with “mandarine oranges,” and Tyson has no ideas for what the puzzle could read.

When it’s Thede’s turn again, she guesses an “a,” of which there are two in the puzzle. She guesses “all of my adoring fans” on a whim and turns out to be right!

“What?!” Tyson says in pure shock while Hale applauds Thede. “So good!” Hale adds.

Pat Sajak walks over to the players and jokes to Tyson, “As an astrophysicist, can you explain what just happened?” All Tyson can say is “WHAT?” Thede is “shaking” as she celebrates her shocking win.

Hosted by Pat Sajak and Vanna White , Celebrity Wheel of Fortune invites celebrity contestants to spin the world’s most famous Wheel on America’s Game and solve puzzles for a chance to win $1 million. All the money won will go to a charity of their choice.

In the Season 4 Episode 10 finale, Tyson is competing for the Harlem Educational Activities Fund; Thede is competing for Girls Inc.; and Hale is competing for Stand Up To Cancer. See them face off for a good cause tonight on ABC!

This 'Wheel of Fortune' Fan Wins Episode After Trying To Be On Show For Almost 30 Years: 'I’m Here Through Faith And Perseverance'

Tracy McBride, of Greenville, South Carolina, was 20 years old when she first tried out as a participant on  Wheel of Fortune .  After nearly three decades of going through the process, her dream of becoming a contestant on the popular game show came true.

According to  TV Insider , McBride appeared on Friday’s episode of  Wheel of Fortune  and explained to longtime host Pat Sajak how it took her years to be on the show.

“When’s the first time you tried to get on this show?” Sajak asked.

“20 years ago,” McBride responded initially, then corrected herself. “I take that back. 28 years ago! I tried at the age of 20.”

Sajak, 77, was surprised at the lengthy journey to complete the show’s five-step process for the mother of one.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Wheel of Fortune (@wheeloffortune)

“Wow, “  he responded. “But you haven’t been trying all those 20 years?”

McBride, 48, shared how she never gave up, and her “perseverance “  had finally paid off.

“Periodically, I would update my information, and I’m here through faith and perseverance; I made it, “  McBride said as the studio audience cheered.

“We’ve been waiting for ya, “  Sajak added. “I told ’em, I said, ‘I’m not leaving until Tracy gets here.’ “

McBride sailed through multiple rounds as she defeated her opponents, winning $13,348 in cash and a trip to the Bahamas. She then made it to the bonus round, where she had to finish the phrase with the letters “F, K, P, and I, “  per TV Insider.

She had to finish the four-word puzzle that read, “F _ R / _ _ _ T / I T ‘ S / _ _ R T _.”

With years of experience watching this show segment, McBride swiftly completed the puzzle: “For What It’s Worth, “  she said as the timer began.

From there, McBride’s winnings multiplied when Sajak revealed she’d won a brand new Ford Edge SEL worth $41,420, bringing her total cash and prizes to $54,768.

Fans congratulated McBride on her success as  Wheel of Fortune’s   Instagram account shared her journey.

“I am so so happy she won she deserved it waiting 28 years and I love the comment that Pat said I’m not leaving till Tracy gets here God bless Tracy and Pat Sajak, “  one user said.

“I was so happy for this contestant tonight. But I have to say – she looked like she was about 28 tonight – still a young looking woman. Congrats to her winning the car and all that cash !! “  another wrote.

“Excellent show today she waited 23 years and she was the luckiest one ❤️ “  a third user said.

On The Red Carpet

'wheel of fortune live' travels the country giving 'wheel' watchers a chance to spin and win.

Game show host Mark L. Walburg awards up to $10,000 each night

OTRC logo

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- "Wheel of Fortune Live!" is a travelling version of the hit TV game show "Wheel of Fortune." On The Red Carpet caught up with veteran game show host Mark L. Walberg when "Wheel of Fortune Live!" rolled into Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, CA.

"There's the TV show with Pat Sajak and Vanna White that we all grew up with, and what we're doing is bringing it to the heartland and to Canada and all over with a live version of that show, not for TV, but we get people right out of the audience to come up and play the game and sort of fulfill their bucket list of being on 'Wheel of Fortune,'" explained Walberg.

Contestants are randomly selected from the audience to jump on stage and spin a replica of the iconic Wheel, solve puzzles and win prizes, like trips to Paris or Hawaii and even cash money up to $10,000.

Ann Guinpivano was lucky enough to get on stage. "I thought, 'I don't have a chance, and then my name showed up on the screen and I screamed my head off.'"

"We have no idea of who is going to end up on stage, and that happens every night is a journey. That's my favorite part." explained Walberg.

"It's not as easy as it looks," said contestant Mickey Guillory. "It's a lot harder on the stage than when you are sitting in your seat. I had every one of them when I'm sitting in my seat, but up there, you're frozen."

The night's top winner was Anthony Montuori Jr.. He had some advice for anyone who finds themselves spinning the Wheel. "It is nerve wracking when you are up there, and the letters are called. You don't know what to do. You take a breath, buy a vowel and stay calm."

Walberg said everyone needs to check out "Wheel of Fortune Live!" when it comes to a city year you. "We have a great time. There's nothing at stake but fun, and it's a celebration of America's game." Even if you don't get on stage, you still have a chance of winning.

"When someone wins on stage we try to match that prize for someone in the audience," he said.

Wheel of Fortune fans blast contestants for 'disastrous' episode meltdown

Wheel of Fortune had fans up in arms after Wednesday's episode.

The long-running NBC game show, which is set to get a new host soon , saw three pairings of young people and their grandparents : Rex and Katherine Wang; Sam Johnson and Linda Vian; and Jovanni White and Joan Bradshaw compete for big cash prizes.

Katherine claimed to have been a fan of the show since the '70s, but some fans weren't convinced that any of the contestants that night were truly clued up on the rules of the game.

It all went downhill when Sam and Linda couldn't decide if they wanted to solve or request more letters during the first puzzle.

Then, Rex and Katherine joined in the chaos by started spouting off vowel requests without the iconic phrase, "I'd like to buy a vowel" in the second puzzle - before proceeding to go on to buy all of the vowels.

Jiovanni and Joan then played their part in the mayhem by trying to ask for another letter in the after-the-bell guess-off.

"Uh no, what we do is," host Pat Sajak started to correct the pair before abandoning his efforts and trying his luck with Rex and Katherine again.

Once the game got back to Jiovanni and Joan, they were ready to solve it - but Pat had to remind them they had a chance to earn more money before doing so: "Well you might want to add another letter and get a little more money. You don't have to."

The chaos of Wednesday's show left fans divided - with some finding it hilarious while others were left furious.

"Wheel of Fortune right now is a bunch of kids who have apparently never watched the show and their grandmothers who are avid fans and I am THRIVING. One of the kids just raised her hand during the final spin to ask if she was allowed to solve it. I could watch this forever," one fan fumed on X .

Another viewer penned: "Apparently you can go on Wheel of Fortune without knowing the rules of Wheel of Fortune."

As a third person asked: "Has any of these people on @WheelofFortune tonight ever watched the show? What a disaster episode."

While another viewer asserted: "That was the most chaotic #WheelofFortune I've ever seen. Nobody understood the rules."

In the end, the winners of the night were Rex and Katherine, who, despite missing out on the final puzzle, got a trip to Switzerland.

Wheel of Fortune airs weeknights on NBC.
