Our honest Béis luggage review

Is béis luggage worth it, more of béis luggage to consider.

Between hectic airport lines, crowded public transit and dreaded delays, traveling is already stressful enough. Drab, poorly made luggage should be the last of your concerns. Enter Béis, actress Shay Mitchell's travel brand touted as one of the Internet's favorite places to shop functional and stylish suitcases — at equally attractive prices.

There's no denying its stunning designs, but we had to see for ourselves just how practical their offerings were. So, I recruited the best-selling Front Pocket Carry-On Roller as my travel companion from Brooklyn, New York, to Boston, Massachusetts. I also compared notes with our Good Housekeeping Institute pros who regularly perform rigorous tests on suitcases to determine which ones best suit different needs. We tapped Senior Textiles Analyst Emma Seymour for her expertise on all things Béis, including the coveted Carry-On Roller .

Read on for our complete Béis luggage review , and get answers to the frequently asked questions about the celebrity-owned luggage brand.

The bottom line: Béis luggage is an excellent investment for style-conscious, casual travelers — but frequent flyers willing to splurge may want a more durable option.

What is Béis?

Founded in 2018, Béis (pronounced "base") made waves for its color-coordinated luggage, including a creamy Beige that became the brand's signature and a bubblegum Atlas Pink that perpetually sells out. TikTok helped propel the brand to viral fame thanks to hearty endorsements of the Weekender Bag , while luggage tags , tote bags and toiletry cases accompany its popular luggage.

That lineup includes four styles: a Carry-On Roller and a Front Pocket Carry-On , plus a medium-sized 26-inch Check-In Roller and a large-sized 28-inch Check-In Roller . Each suitcase is outfitted with a hard polycarbonate shell and 360-degree spinner wheels. But unlike other brands, Béis incorporates smart details like a retractable bag strap, a built-in weight indicator and a padded trolley handle.

As a frequent traveler herself, Mitchell said she thought about features she wished her old suitcases had. "I wanted to add a feature to the luggage to make it easy and simple," she told Bustle about the weight limit indicator. "It goes to one of the biggest goals for all of our products: Trying to make travel easier for people so they do it more."

Carry-On Roller

Like other GH Institute-tested luggage such as Monos and Away , Béis suitcases feature a hard polycarbonate shell. Tougher than plastic and lighter than aluminum, polycarbonate suitcases generally earn high marks in our Lab tests — and Béis's carry-ons are no exception.

When traveling with the front-pocketed iteration, all my belongings (including my laptop, glass perfume bottles and souvenirs) remained perfectly intact throughout a bumpy ride in the luggage section of a Peter Pan bus. The padded front pocket cushioned my 16-inch MacBook during subway and train rides. I noticed some minor scuffs forming on the exterior. However, the Béis carry-on endured the excursion with no bumps or dents.

Our Lab expert, Emma Seymour, also performed several tests on the Carry-On Roller (sans front pocket) to determine how it may hold up over years of traveling. She put weights in the suitcase and dropped it repeatedly at a three-foot height from different angles. Similar to my own experience, the Béis carry-on didn't dent during any of the drop tests, though we did notice a few scuffs developing .

beis luggage with scuffs

Seymour tested the suitcase's scratch resistance in the Textiles Lab, and she found that it scratched and scuffed easily, especially around the edges by the zippers and handles. Fortunately, the textured matte finish wears the scratches and scuffs better than a shiny suitcase. We recommend buffing out scuffs with a sponge, like the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

Ease of Use

Whether you're traveling by subway, train or bus, the Béis Carry-On maneuvers like a dream. Its 360-degree spinner wheels glided smoothly across a variety of surfaces despite my heavy duffle strapped atop. Another one of my favorite features is the cushioned, telescoping handle. The squishy padding made rolling the suitcase through crowds far more comfortable, and it added a luxe touch compared to more expensive suitcases I've tried.

All Béis suitcases also come with a built-in scale, which Seymour appreciated when she had to check in her bag at the airport. Simply lift the suitcase by its side handle, and the discreet weight indicator window will turn red if your bag is over 50 pounds .

Béis makes light work out of packing. Using the carry-on with a front pocket, I had more than enough room to stash essentials for a long weekend — though, strategic packers (armed with handy packing cubes ) could probably fit a couple of weeks' worth of clothing. I fit everything from winter clothing and a pair of boots to a Béis toiletry bag and a full-sized hair dryer.

beis luggage review

Compared to the Monos Carry-On Pro (39.9L) or the Away Carry-On (39.8l), Béis claims the Front Pocket Carry-On offers a 47L interior — all while staying within airline regulation-approved dimensions. Those who need a smidge more space can opt for the classic Béis Carry-On that expands from 49L to 66L of packing space, per the brand. However, it's important to note that this model exceeds some airline regulations, meaning you may be asked to check it on smaller planes.

Both carry-on styles open butterfly style, with a zippered compartment on one side and a main compartment on the other . Inside the zippered side, there are two additional pockets built in — one frosted and one opaque — for holding toiletries, undergarments, chargers and more. A fabric divider keeps items organized while the adjustable compression straps give optimal packing room and help prevent items from shifting.

Just be careful not to overstuff the zipper pockets; otherwise, it can be difficult to close the bag. An added perk I loved: All Béis suitcases come with drawstring bags for dirty laundry or shoes.

For casual travelers, yes! Stylish and affordable, Béis luggage best suits those who only travel a handful of times per year or those who don't mind treating their suitcases with a bit more TLC.

During both personal use and Lab drop testing, the carry-ons were easily scuffed. Frequent flyers who need a suitcase to last them through years of continuous use may want to invest extra money in workhorse suitcases like Samsonite or TravelPro . I also found the Béis slightly harder to zip up than other suitcases when fully packed.

What it lacks in durability, Béis makes up for with premium details: an ergonomic telescoping handle, a built-in weight indicator, a bag strap and a handy TSA lock system. Weighing in at 8.6 lbs, it's slightly heavier than Monos or Away, but as an overpacker, I find that added storage a fair trade-off.

Aesthetics aside — luggage is a big investment at the end of the day. We appreciate that Béis offers some of the most attractive luggage we've tried while ringing in slightly less expensive than its competitors at $218 to $248 for a carry-on.

Béis shot to viral fame for its Weekender Bag — available in standard and mini sizes. Those on TikTok loved its sleek silhouette and clever details like a separate shoe compartment and a padded laptop sleeve. It also helped re-popularize the concept of weekender bags. Impressed by its airline-compatible dimensions and under-$100 price tag, we dubbed the Mini Weekender the most stylish weekender bag . The Béis Work Tote also earned nods from the GH Institute as the most fashionable work bag .

If you prefer a more classic style, the BÉISics Duffle is a great alternative. Similarly, it features a handy trolley strap that secures your bag on top of your suitcase — a lifesaver during long commutes. The Dopp Kit was larger than I expected, conveniently designed with two separate compartments for my makeup and skincare. I had a difficult time getting it to lay flat in my carry-on suitcase when packed to the brim, but it fit all the products I needed for my trip with room to spare. Plus, it's under $50.

Looking for the best carry on luggage for your next getaway trip? Whether you prefer a soft-sided carry-on or hard shell suitcase, our spacious rolling luggage with four spinner wheels is so easy to travel with. Our carry-on suitcases expand two inches to fit that backup pair of jeans and that sequined dress you know you won't wear, but throw in “just in case.” Smooth 360-degree spinner wheels and a cushioned handle will have you navigating plane aisles like a pro. And no matter your flying ‘fit of choice (cute, classy, or totally cozy), all of our carry-on luggage will pair well with either leather backpacks or sporty duffel bags, thanks to our minimalist design and three neutral colorways: beige, black, and grey.

When it comes to your carry-on bag, flexibility is key. You need a suitcase that can handle a weekend beach trip, a ski vacation, and a work conference—enter the BÉIS roller carry-on.

Struggling to zip your luggage closed? Tossing clean and dirty clothes in a jumbled mess? Not with our carry-on roller design. From perfectly sized pockets to detachable compression straps, each strategic detail eases your travel. Safely store your belongings with built-in and pop-out pouches (there’s even a removable “Dirt Bag” to handle that mid-trip load of laundry or keep your wet bathing suit separate between destinations so you can leave your packing cubes and extra laundry bags behind). And to hold it all together, expandable zipper pullers and four-point compression flaps allow you to maximize your packing space (no more agonizing over wedges vs. platforms—bring them both!).

We built our hard and soft-sided cabin luggage to last. For hard shell casing, BÉIS only uses durable 100% virgin PolyCarbonate. This high-quality hard-side carry-on luggage won’t dent with every bump, whether inside the overhead bin or on the security belt. And if you spill that airport latte, no big deal! Our suitcases are stain-resistant, both inside and out. Consider it the last carry-on you’ll need.

With our carry-on luggage, the security line is your runway (not your ruin). Our thoughtful design maximizes space while adhering to TSA-approved guidelines, the luggage size coming in at a versatile 14" x 9" x 22". Even fully expanded, these rollers can snugly slide into most overhead bins. And with lightweight material, both hardshell and soft-sided carry-on luggage has never been easier to handle. Just grab it from the sturdy side or top handles, and lift it onto that security conveyor belt like a pro.

Whether your suitcases are going through the X-ray, getting loaded into the cargo hold on an overbooked flight, or sitting right next to you, your belongings need protection. That’s why our carry-on bags (and all of our luggage) come with TSA-approved locks. Just set your triple-number combination, and voila! Secured valuables all trip long. From the hostel to the overhead bin, our carry-on design will carry your belongings safely.

With organized compartments, stylish looks, and secure features, we’re taking the stress out of airline travel, so the only baggage you’re carrying is the one holding your clothes. Want to conquer any vacation? Combine our hard shell or soft-sided carry-on with matching 26” and 29” check-in luggage sets ! With BÉIS, every trip is a chance to unlock your inner traveler and keep your inner calm.

The Reviews: The Best Travel Luggage of 2023

Osprey ozone 2-wheel carry-on 40l/21.5” ($280).

Osprey Ozone 2-Wheel Carry-On 40L/21.5”

Volume: 40L Weight: 4.5 lbs Pros: Lightweight construction; Large wheels and high clearance Cons: For 40L, this piece of luggage seemed to hold less than others the same size

The updated Ozone line from Osprey, featuring five pieces ranging from four-wheeled suitcases to smaller backpacks and boarding bags, was designed for frequent flyers and travelers who value ease of transport. Of those, the Ozone 2-Wheel Carry-On is perhaps the most convenient on-board option. Made from an ultralight yet durable aluminum frame and nanofly recycled nylon fabric, it offers just enough organizational capabilities to make packing for a trip a little easier. This suitcase (like all pieces in this line) also features a buttonless trolley handle and a YKK reverse coil coated zipper for improved water resistance—both industry firsts. The Ozone 2-Wheel Carry-On also has a high clearance High Road LT frame, and oversized 90mm wheels, making it rugged enough to handle terrain beyond concourse floors. One tester takeaway: Despite this bag’s advertised 40-liter capacity, it didn’t seem to hold as much as softer duffel-style bags of the same size. That said, the sleek design combined with the function of this bag made it an obvious choice for our testers who needed a transport-friendly yet durable carry-on.

Bottom Line: A well-designed and lightweight suitcase made by a trusted brand. Perfect as a carry-on for frequent flyers.

Matador Globerider ($350)

Matador Globerider

Volume: 45L Weight: 4.5 lbs Pros: Generous space and organizational features; Comfortable backpack carry Cons: Because it’s so durable, the pack itself is quite heavy for a backpack

The Globerider Backpack is one of those do-anything pieces of luggage, designed specifically for the true adventure traveler. It combines the ease of traveling with a backpack and the functionality of a duffel bag. From a materials perspective, it’s rugged and built to last: 420-denier nylon UHMWPE (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) reinforced ripstop meets 420-denier recycled nylon meets 100-nylon ripstop, and each of these materials features polyurethane waterproofing. As a result, the Globeride impressed testers with how indestructible it proved over miles of wear and tear that included multiple flights, baggage carousels, and transport in wet and muddy truck beds. It has a clamshell opening designed for accessibility and packability, while also offering an external access pocket for a laptop and other essentials. If we gave out awards for number of pockets, this bag would win it. Although the main compartment is larger and allows for looser organization, you’ll find a place for everything else. The Globerider also has an internal aluminum frame, a stowable and padded hipbelt, and it meets most airline carry-on requirements.

Bottom Line: This is a do-it-all piece of luggage. If you’re packing only one bag, this would be a good one.

The North Face Base Camp Gear Box Large ($150 for Medium, $175 for Large)

The North Face Base Camp Gear Box Large

Volume: 65L (Medium), 90L (Large) Weight: 4.2 lbs (Medium), 5.8 lbs (Large) Pros: Lots of space and organizational options; Folds down flat for storage and when not in use Cons: A piece of luggage that only works in specific environments (mainly cars, vans, and home storage)

The new North Face Camp Gear Box is made from the same material as the brand’s durable Base Camp duffel—300-denier recycled polyester and 840-denier recycled ballistic nylon. However, unlike a traditional duffel, this hold-all is equipped with internal metal “kickstands” that fold up for rigid support and down for storage, which makes this piece of luggage ideal for the road. One tester used the 90 liter Base Camp Gear Box to schlep all of her gear to a mountain bike race and was able to fit the whole kit and caboodle: chest protector, two full face helmets, one half shell, two tires, and two pairs of bike shoes within the box itself. She stashed three pairs of sunglasses, two pairs of goggles, and other bike maintenance tools in the added internal pouches. Extra brake pads, grips, and bike tools fit snugly in the lid-zippered pockets. Even with all of that, the lid closed with ease. Plus, the outer handles on the box make it easy to transport in and out of vehicles. For someone who is on the road often, this box is a must-have for organization and travel.

Bottom Line: This should be a staple for anyone who travels out of their car often—think weekend camping trips, road trips, etc.— and a perfect storage option for those who spend time living on the road.

Alpine Luddites Expedition Duffel 135L ($485)

Alpine Luddites Expedition Duffel 135L

Volume: 135L Weight: 2.6 lbs Pros: Made by hand in Vermont; Durable fabric and well made—will last a lifetime Cons: Pricetag. But you get what you pay for, which is an exceptionally well-made piece of luggage

While the Expedition Duffel 135L isn’t new, Alpine Luddites as a company is worth knowing about. Alpine Luddites is currently a one-person show based in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont that produces handmade bags made to order. Translation: every bag is made with your exact travel and adventure needs in mind. Though the waitlist can be as long as 28 weeks for standard items, and over a year for custom packs, these bags are worth the wait in our testers’ opinions. The Expedition Duffel 135L—one of the brand’s staples—is designed specifically to fit pulk-style expedition sleds, with full-length external daisy chains for strapping down the cargo. Updated this year with a double-layer bottom with Ultra 400 Challenge woven sailcloth, this bag is tough enough to withstand being tossed around and schlepped to and from base camp, making it an excellent choice for big mountain expeditions. That said, it wouldn’t be out of place on more modest excursions—our testers remarked how functional it was on long weekend road trips.

Bottom Line: If you like the idea of supporting a small brand making quality gear that’s designed specifically for you and your needs, Alpine Luddites’ durable designs should be at the top of your list.

Eagle Creek Migrate Duffel ($119)

Eagle Creek Migrate Duffel

Volume: 90L Weight: 2.9 lbs Pros: “Doctor bag” style zip-top; 100% recycled 900D Poly TPU and 100% recycled 1680D Ballistic Poly RPVB fabric Cons: Testers complained that while packing the bag, the top zipper had a hard time staying open and wasn’t stiff enough

The latest update of the Migrate duffel was a tester favorite for its holding capacity—you can fit a lot in here. Now 100-percent recycled, the new design is even more durable with stronger, recycled fabric, and diverts waste and reuses windshield plastics from landfills to help create more sustainable products and processes. This duffel features a “doctor bag” style zip-top which allows for easier access and full visibility of contents and an additional five liters of packing space. Tuck-away backpack straps allow for multiple carry options. The functionality and added pockets—internal and the front zippered pocket—set it apart from many other duffels in this category.

Bottom Line: This is a reasonably priced, durable duffel bag that is super easy to access and see inside contents because of the “doctor bag” style.

Backcountry All Around Duffel ($139)

Backcountry All Around Duffel

Volume: 60L Weight: 3.3 lbs Pros: End cap dry pocket; Pockets, pockets, pockets Cons: Backpack straps aren’t the most comfortable while carrying this bag at capacity

With updated colorways and sizing for this year, Backcountry’s All Around Duffel surprised our testers. The organizational qualities of this bag far exceeded most of the other products in this category. This includes mesh pockets in the lid and even a pocket inside of the mesh pocket to keep small items safe. Perhaps the best part of this duffel is the separate compartment—a massive end-cap dry bag (or dry pocket, as Backcountry calls it) that keeps wet, dirty, and smelly items isolated from the rest of your gear. “I put three pairs of shoes and all of my dirty laundry in there, keeping them away from my clean clothes,” reported one tester. She also remarked how durable and waterproof the bag stayed after sliding around in the back of her truck on a weekend road trip. Credit goes to the 500-denier polyester PVC face fabric and 210-denier nylon water resistant pockets. The removable backpack straps are comfortable and provide ease of transport when on the go, and compression straps help keep contents from shifting. A padded base provides extra cushion to protect your things from rough travel.

Bottom Line: Awesome, spacious, pocket-filled duffel perfect for air travel, road trips, and weekend getaways.

No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . The Samsonite Bartlett Carry-on Softside Spinner earned perfect scores during our tests, impressing us as a solid softside suitcase for under $100. We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Best for Staying Organized

Away Travel

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment.

Most Spacious

Delsey Paris

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years.

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Limited lifetime warranty on luggage; 5-year warranty on soft bags and accessories; 2-year warranty on small leather goods

Best for Smaller Bags

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. We also like the Compakt Small Garment Bag , which is perfect to transport of one or two formal pieces inside a carry-on suitcase. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair.

Best Budget

Amazon basics.

Amazon's luggage is not just budget-friendly but also lightweight and sturdy with unexpectedly large capacities.

Color options are limited, and the suitcases don't have USB ports or other smart features.

We can confidently tell you there's much more to love about Amazon Basics luggage than a budget-friendly price tag. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner also landed on our list of the best lightweight luggage after earning a perfect score in all categories. We especially love that even though it is a light suitcase, it's sturdy with wheels that easily maneuver over gravel and carpeting. More pockets would have been appreciated, but both the carry-on and checked models easily fit everything on our packing list without the expanders, which adds another 15 percent to the capacity.

The hardside suitcases have extra-thick thermoplastic shells that passed our durability tests with flying colors — no scratches or dents in sight. They were generally easy to maneuver, too, albeit a little more difficult on gravel. Color options are limited, and while most Amazon Basics carriers don't have TSA locks or smart features, the designs exceeded our expectations.

The Details: 30 day return policy | 3-year warranty

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized.

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

Briggs & Riley

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models like the Sympatico Domestic Carry-on Expandable Spinner with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without gettings tuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze.

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test eve more luggage.

More Luggage Testing

How we chose these brands.

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.

Despite what targeted advertising might have you believe, there’s more to the luggage-verse these days than baby-pink hard-shells . And as it seems a good time to replace pre-pandemic suitcases, we sought a broader view — sussing out the most durable trunks (like photographer Henry Leutwyler’s much-loved vintage Zero Halliburton travel cases seen here; similar models start at $1,295) and the roomiest, overhead-compartment-compliant carry-ons .

It’s available in other colors and sizes , too.

One, who took it on an 11-day Euro-trip, says it went “through many airports, into trunks, out of trunks, into overhead bins, then out of overhead bins. Up and down escalators, through Customs. On and off of trains and buses. It survived!”

(At the BET Hip-Hop Awards, he told reporters he would be “literally jetting right out of here” after the show.) According to publicist Nick Dierl, the suitcase is a collaboration between Globe-Trotter, an English luggage brand founded in 1897, and Tyler, the Creator’s own clothing, fragrance, nail-polish, and accessory line, Golf le Fleur.

The Luggage in Which Joan Didion Packed Her Leotards, Cigarettes, and Bourbon

Used Tumi Four-Wheeled Collapsible Suitcase

In The White Album , Joan Didion wrote of the packing list she kept taped to her closet door; it included staples like a nightgown, bourbon, and cigarettes. While there was no mention of what she packed everything into, she was once photographed at the airport with a set of handheld suitcases. This ballistic-nylon suitcase from Tumi, available on eBay, has a similar soft pocket on the outside for extra storage.

Mickey Drexler , the onetime leader of Gap and J.Crew and current CEO of Alex Mill, first discovered Globe-Trotter in London after walking by the brand’s shop. “I walked in and fell in love in a second with its colorful luggage,” he says. He promptly decided to buy its cases to carry at J.Crew — and still uses his to this day. (His favorite color combo is black with a gray monogram, but he also has one in yellow.) “Whenever I check in to a hotel, the bellmen always say, ‘I love your luggage,’ ” he says.

The Bag With Compartments for Sketchbooks

Muji Hard Carry Bag (88L)

One downside to hard-shell luggage is the lack of compartments. Muji has found a work-around to that problem: The mesh in the middle of the suitcase has three zippered compartments. “It’s so practical and neat, especially when you have little bits and pieces that need to be packed in,” says illustrator Fei Wang. “I put my sketchbooks and pencils there to keep them intact.”

Editor’s note: While you can learn more about this suitcase on its product page, Muji currently requires customers to visit one of the brand’s physical stores to purchase it.

9 great suitcases worth the checked-bag fee

Samantha Rosen

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

We're clearly going places now. But choosing which suitcase you're going to purchase for an upcoming trip remains no easy task.

Whether you're a road warrior who hasn't stopped moving or your luggage game could simply use an upgrade after the great pandemic pause, you'll want to make sure you do some research before sliding your credit card. And as eager as we all are to get back out there in the world, it's worth taking the time to read reviews and comparison shop before settling on your next suitcase.

Since this is a bag that will be stored under the plane and tossed on luggage carts, sturdiness is key. Your bag is going to be thrown around quite a bit, so you'll want to make sure it's up to the task.

You'll also want a suitcase with plenty of compartments and organizational components. You're likely packing for more than just a few days if you're checking a bag, so it's important that all your items can fit neatly inside.

But be sure to have some fun with this purchase, too! Your suitcase is an expression of your personality, so you'll want to get one that you feel matches your travel style and goals (luckily, there's a color and style for that).

Before you finalize your order though, do yourself a favor and check out our guides to airline shopping portals as well as the best credit cards for online shopping . That way, the gear you're buying for your next trip is helping you actually get there, too.

Our favorite suitcases right now:

Arlo skye the frame check-in, monos check-in large, delsey paris, clavel collection, 30" spinner, travelpro platinum elite 25" expandable spinner, briggs & riley sympatico large expandable spinner, samsonite winfield 2 hardside luggage, rimowa original check-in, nomatic check-in, away the large.

Why we love it: Arlo Skye was founded by Tumi and Louis Vuitton alums, so you know it's going to be good. It's sleek and stylish, complete with an aluminum frame and an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell. Our favorite feature, though, might be the two TSA-approved clasp locks that keep your belongings safe and secure, all without a zipper. Just be sure to remember your combination.

The details: 26.6 inches by 17.7 inches by 11.0 inches and weighs 10.5 pounds

Pricing: Arlo Skye bags are only available on their website — The Frame Check-in sells for $495.

Why we love it: Not only does the Monos Check-In Large come in ten different colors and patterns, but it has plenty of room to pack every essential for the whole family and has an ultra-sturdy telescopic handle that makes it a cinch to push and pull. It's so tough to decide which is or favorite feature, but it might just be that ergonomically designed handle and those whisper-quiet wheels that make you feel like you're on a catwalk in the airport. Monos is also the only Certified Neutral travel brand, so you can feel like you're doing a good travel deed, too, purchasing one of these babies.

The details: Mono's largest suitcase measures 30 inches by 21 inches by 11 inches, and weighs only 10.58 pounds

Pricing: Monos luggage is only available on the Monos website, and the Check-In Large starts at $367 (on sale now for a limited time for $330). Get 15 percent off luggage essentials like packing cubes and a protective luggage cover with every suitcase purchase.

Why we love it: DELSEY PARIS' CLAVEL collection is the lightest and brightest assortment of luggage the brand has touted yet. The company pioneered the use of polypropylene in luggage manufacturing — a material known for its resilience to heat, wear and tear. And the CLAVEL collection keeps things ultra-airy and spacious, with nine color options, too, and three sizes to choose from (we say go large). Unique features include the patented zip SECURITECH® technology that's far more durable than a conventional zipper and the bag's expandable main compartment that allows for maximum packing flexibility. We love the two separate packing compartments with tie-down straps, shoe pockets and a mesh divider to keep all your belongings in place while on the move.

The details: The CLAVEL collection 30" spinner measures 32.5 inches by 21.5 inches by 31.25 inches and weighs just 9.8 pounds.

Why we love it: Travelpro bags are beloved by road warriors near and far — seriously, just ask the next flight attendant you see. Travelpro makes a number of different designs, but we have a soft spot for the Platinum Elite (and not only because of its lifetime warranty against airline damage and fun color options like Bordeaux and Coastal Blue). The eight self-aligning spinner wheels roll like butter and you can easily pack two weeks' worth of wardrobe essentials and then some inside.

The details: The Travelpro Platinum Elite 25" Expandable Spinner measures 25 inches by 18 inches by 11.25 inches, and weighs 9.8 pounds, extra light considering all you can cram inside.

Why we love it: Part of the sleek, resilient, tech-friendly Sympatico collection, the Large Expandable Spinner is the bag for the traveler who can't bear to leave anything behind. The Makrolon® polycarbonate case is extremely durable, built to protect contents and stay scratch-and-scuff-free. The brand's innovative CX® compression-expansion system allows you to expand the bag for 25 percent more space — and then compress it back down to its original size. Additionally, Briggs & Riley's simple as that® guarantee means if the bag is ever broken or damaged, the company repairs it free of charge (no proof of purchase needed, no questions asked).

The details: The Sympatico Large Expandable Spinner measures 30 inches by 20 inches by 12 inches and weighs 13.5 pounds.

Why we love it: We have a feeling you're going to love this bag so much, you might feel a twinge of guilt after you leave it with the check-in agent. This four-wheeled spinner has a polycarbonate shell that makes it extremely durable. It also expands as needed, if you just have to stuff that extra sweater or pair of shoes in. If that's the case, the full-zip interior divider and organization pockets will really come in handy. The bag comes with a limited 10-year warranty and is available in a slew of shiny colors that include charcoal, deep blue, orange, purple, arctic pink and brushed carbon color, among others.

The details: 31 inches by 20 inches by 12.75 inches, and weighs just over 11 pounds.

Why we love it: This list wouldn't be complete without a mention of Rimowa. It's a cult favorite for a reason — well, a few reasons. Its design is iconic, yes, but this four-wheeled suitcase is also designed to withstand trip after trip. There's no zipper on this bag, either; just two TSA-approved locks to keep your belongings in check, as well as a height-adjustable flex-divider inside. If you do encounter bumps in the road, though, you're entitled to a five-year guarantee as well as hotel repairs at participating properties around the world (yes, really).

The details: 26 inches by 17.8 inches by 9.5 inches and just shy of 12 pounds.

Pricing: Such accolades don't come cheap. Expect to drop $1,270 to put one of these in your travel closet.

Why we love it: This isn't your standard check-in bag. This four-wheeled suitcase uses a magnetic compression system and full-perimeter expansion to keep your items secured and extremely organized. It has silent Hinomoto wheels, TSA-locking YKK zippers and a sleek, yet unusual design. It's virtually indestructible, too — just see what happens when you throw something at it. Go on, try it out.

The details: The Nomatic Check-in bag measures 29 inches by 18.5 inches by 9 inches, and weighs 12.3 pounds, making it one of the heavier suitcases on the list.

Why we love it: You just can't go wrong with an Away bag . It's designed with frequent travelers in mind — with two compartments to house clothes and harder belongings, like shoes — and can withstand even your most rigorous trips, with its sturdy polycarbonate shell. As an added bonus, if you also have one of Away's carry-on suitcases, you can easily stow it inside the suitcase when you're not traveling, freeing up some storage space at home. Away bags also come in every possible color you could dream up — everything from classic black and white to light pink, brick red and deep hunter green. There are also a handful of limited edition colors and schemes, like the retro ski "Chalet" collection and an asphalt-colored suitcase with a mint-green zipper created in collaboration with the American Express® Green Card. Get them while you can. (These may no longer be available so be sure to check the Away site).

The details: Away's largest suitcase measures 29 inches by 20.5 inches by 12.5 inches and weighs 11.6 pounds.

Pricing: You can only buy Away's bags online , and The Large sells for $375.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to select the best checked luggage.

Since your checked luggage will likely get thrown around and banged up quite a bit, durability is key here. You'll want to make sure it's large enough to hold all of your belongings but not too large that you can't comfortably wheel it around the airport with you.

You'll also want to choose a suitcase that fits your travel style. If you're planning on more adventurous, rugged trips, you might be better off with a duffel. If you're staying in a luxury hotel with white-glove service, you won't mind leaving your luxury suitcase with a bellhop.

As you've seen here, suitcases can vary greatly in price. Keep in mind your budget as well as your personal style to find your perfect match.

Benefits of traveling with a checked bag

While many people love traveling with carry-ons due to their efficiency and ease, there's something to be said for checked bags, too.

They really come in handy for longer trips, especially ones where you're traveling for an extended period of time or require clothes and accessories for more than one type of trip. Checked bags allow you more flexibility, and not just in terms of the clothing you pack — you won't have to abide by TSA's 3-1-1 liquid rule , either.

But many airlines will charge you for checking a bag , so be sure to keep that in mind. Arm yourself with one of these credit cards to help avoid paying pesky fees for your suitcase.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager Review: A Lighter, Durable Upgrade to an Iconic Duffel

The North Face upgrades its well-known travel duffel with more internal organization and a 100% recycled body material. I took it for a spin to see how these changes affect this brand mainstay.

North Face Base Camp Voyager Duffel Bag

I have always been a fan of duffel bags. They’re compact, more portable than a rolling suitcase, and perfect for overnight outings near home as well as weeklong getaways overseas. I’ve tried numerous duffels over many adventures and have found that not all duffel bags are created equally. One bag, in particular, stands out: The North Face’s Base Camp duffels. And if there were an all-star team for duffel bags, the newer Base Camp Voyager would make the first string.

In short: The Base Camp Voyager is very similar to the rest of the Base Camp series, with a slightly different and lighter body fabric with a bunch of recycled updates. Plus, it’s slightly better designed when it comes to an EDC, gym gear, or carry-on travel bag — there are more exterior compartments, including one for a laptop, and it’s easier to organize.

It’s also smaller than the smallest of the Base Camp standard duffel series (50L), making it carry-on-sized for most airlines. Despite the difference in fabric (The North Face went from 1,000-denier to 300-denier for the body), this bag held up super well over several months of testing.

TNF Base Camp Voyager Review: Tested on Land, Air, and Sea

Who this bag is for.

base travel suitcase

At 42L, the Base Camp Voyager is compact but still has plenty of room to stash your things. It’s perfect for quick overnight trips and meets carry-on bag requirements for airplanes. And so far, it’s proved super durable, so it also doubles nicely as a gear bag for stashing climbing gear, surf supplies, or anything else.

We beat it up over a course of several months from flights and trips in the car, to use as a surf and gear bag at the beach.

Upgraded Recycled Materials

Designed with the environment in mind, one of the key upgrades from the Base Camp duffel is that the body is made from 300-denier recycled polyester tarpaulin with TPU laminate. Additionally, the boot is made from 840-denier recycled ballistic nylon with a non-PFC durable water-repellent finish (same as the rest in the series). Finally, The North Face finished the bag with recycled webbing, buckles, and mesh. The only part on the bag that’s not recycled is the zippers.

Carry-On Size Comfort

As the name suggests, the Base Camp Voyager was designed for…voyaging. So, we wanted to put all-day travel and its comfort to the test. The duffel sports padded shoulder straps that unclip and can be tucked away behind the back panel, so you can carry it as a backpack or a duffel. The bag also has side handles that help the bag sit away from your body, so it’s not constantly swinging into you as you walk.

Other thoughtful features include an external, secure-zip, padded 15-inch laptop pocket, an internal zippered pocket for stashing essentials, and a zippered exterior pocket. The duffel has an adjustable and removable divider in the main compartment to help keep gear organized. Lastly, the duffel has external webbing with multiple lash points for attaching extra gear.

base travel suitcase

When the Base Camp Voyager first arrived in the mail, I was worried it might be too small for my needs. But after sitting down with it and getting everything together that I needed for a trip down the coast, I found it was the perfect size. At 42L it can hold quite a bit, but it’s a manageable size that’s easy to carry and easily fits in an overhead bin should you be utilizing air transportation.

I tend to be the type of packer that throws everything in my bag without rhyme or reason and calls it good to go. I’m working on getting more organized and the Base Camp Voyager has proved to help immensely with that. I travel for work, so the padded laptop sleeve was perfect for keeping my laptop safe and sound. I liked that the divider in the main pocket was removable because I wanted it for some occasions, but not all. The external zippered pocket was perfect for storing quick-access items like my glasses, keys, wallet, and passport.

Base Camp Voyager 42L Duffle Bag

I’ve tested my fair share of gear, and was surprised by how durable this duffel is. I’ve only owned the pack for a few months, but I have no doubt it will withstand years of adventures, even if I’m not super gentle with it (letting it ride in the back of a truck on a drive down the coast, for example). The water-repellent finish makes the duffel water-resistant, which is perfect for me as I spend a lot of time in tropical climates where it rains frequently.

In addition to fitting clothing and other travel essentials , I found the Base Camp Voyager worked well for stashing my wetsuit and swimsuit after surfing and diving. I’m also a big fan of the option to convert between backpack and shoulder straps. When I found myself walking far, I simply transformed the duffel into a backpack, and I was good to go.

The Base Camp Voyager has everything I could want in a duffel bag. It’s lightweight, comfortable for hours, and has ample storage space for all my things. If you are already a fan of the Base Camp duffel series and are looking for more organization or something made with recycled materials that can be put through the wringer, the Base Camp Voyager is one duffel to consider.

Full Review

Versatility—it’s a trait we’re fans of here at Pack Hacker because it’s the key to condensing functionality into one package. Take a duffle bag , for example. Simply double the shoulder strap, and you get a duffle-backpack combo. It’s a good concept and one of the reasons why we gave the likes of the Base Camp Duffel from The North Face praise.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Briefcase

That duffle has its share of imperfections, but the Base Camp Voyager 32L we have in this review rectifies a lot of it. Comfort and organization are up, and there’s now even a dedicated laptop compartment. The overall design is more streamlined, though there are still some kinks to smooth out, as you’ll see down below.

Materials & Aesthetic

Without the pair of shoulder straps hanging out, the Base Camp Voyager looks like a typical duffle bag. It has a rounded profile and rotund proportions that says “packed and ready to go.” The design doesn’t stray from what makes a duffle bag a duffle bag despite doubling as a backpack . To cut it short, it’s a duffle bag with backpack capabilities.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Logo

There are three colorways to pick from at the time of writing: TNF Black with White trim, Taupe Green with Sulphur Spring Green trim, and finally Aviator Navy with Meridian Blue trim. The latter is what we have in this review, and it’s rather sporty-looking and goes well with the duffle bag aesthetic. Even the branding matches the trim to complete the neon-like color that glows against the dark blue fabric.

Regardless of which colorway you choose, the Base Camp Voyager has a matte-like sheen, which we dig. That sheen is courtesy of a material we’re well-acquainted with—tarpaulin. As a material, tarpaulin is a good choice if you want to make a bag weather-resistant; water just beads off like rain on a freshly waxed car. However, in our experience, it does get scuffed more easily than a material like nylon. It’s a bit of a trade-off, one which The North Face has thought of.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Back Panel With Logo

On the bottom side of the Base Camp Voyager is a thicker ballistic weave in lieu of tarpaulin, which dominates the rest of the duffle. That means when you’re setting the duffle down on a surface like a floor or pavement, the ballistic fabric makes contact, not the tarpaulin. We’re glad to see this kind of design since we’ve had experience with bags like the WANDRD PRVKE Lite collecting damage over time.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Material

If there was one impression we got from the Base Camp Voyager, it’s how robustly built it is courtesy of the tarpaulin, recycled fabric, YKK zippers, and bar-tacked reinforcement. It even has probably one of the beefiest snap fasteners we’ve seen on a bag, plus a ripstop arrangement embedded in the tarpaulin.

External Components

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Fitnote

When we first checked out the Base Camp Voyager’s bigger predecessor, the Base Camp Duffel, we noted how comfortable the versatile carry is. Whether it’s in duffle or backpack mode, the 50-liter capacity is tameable, though those with smaller frames might have trouble.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Harness System

The good news is that the Base Camp Voyager 32L is smaller, so it’s much easier to wield, though at the time of writing there are two larger sizes available if you’re looking for a similar capacity to the Base Camp Duffel. Moreover, the harness system is more refined. The shoulder straps feature more padding and a slimmer width so they’re easier to grab. Each strap has a set of five attachment loops plus an extra one that overlaps the fifth loop for a total of eleven to satisfy even the heaviest of loop users. We even appreciate the bit of tarpaulin covering the top half of the straps to protect them from rain.

Each shoulder strap is fully length adjustable and attachable to either the left or right bottom corner, whichever the user prefers, making it easy to carry the Base Camp Voyager duffle-style. One aspect we found peculiar on the harness system is the strap keepers. Whereas strap keepers on other backpacks slide down to secure loose ends, the ones on the Base Camp Voyager slide up. The result is that there’s a lot of slack left if you have the shoulder strap tightened up. Not an overly huge issue unless you find loose straps unsightly.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Tucking in Straps

One neat feature the Base Camp Voyager has over the bigger Base Camp Duffel is the ability to stow away the shoulder straps behind the back panel. Both duffles have side handles for hand carrying, but the Base Camp Voyager has a cleaner look without any straps hanging out. Plus, all four handles are comfortably padded, so they’re actually viable to use when you’re queuing up at the airport. One thing to note is that while the handles are stitched and reinforced with bar tacks, they’re biased more towards one side, so there is a bit of a lean going on when you carry it by hand.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Bottle Pocket Handle

Lastly, the Base Camp Voyager does come with a water bottle pocket on the right side. It’s positioned higher than a typical water bottle pocket when it’s worn as a backpack, making it a bit easier to reach with your left hand. The tarpaulin doesn’t have any elastic inlay; instead, the pocket relies on a chunky snap fastener and braided cord to keep bottles in—and it works even when it’s oriented sideways in duffle mode. Our slim 18-ounce YETI Rambler slides in easily, with a fair bit of wiggle room to spare, and we didn’t lose it despite the lack of an elastic.

Inside The Duffle

One of the key features of the Base Camp Voyager is its ability to compress into one of its pockets. The pocket in question is the side pocket—that’s the bottom one when you have it in backpack mode—and what The North Face did here is rather clever.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Top Pocket

This bottom pocket can act as a shoe compartment in duffle or backpack mode as it’s easily accessible with its horseshoe-style opening. Curiously, inside is a mesh pocket and a built-in key clip, so you can also use it as a big quick-grab pocket in duffle mode. In backpack mode, though, the top pocket is more convenient for quick-grab items, so we wish the key clip was attachable to that pocket as well.

Compressing the Base Camp Voyager is rather tricky, primarily because of the tarpaulin material and the sheer size of the bag itself. To do this, you lay the bag flat, fold the edges in, then roll from one end and up to where the bottom pocket is. You then turn the bottom pocket inside out to cover the roll like you would when rolling up a pair of socks.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L | It’s compressible but takes some effort to do.

Squeezing and compressing the Base Camp Voyager takes a substantial effort, and it’s definitely not the fastest compressing bag we’ve come across. But, the result is a compressed bag no bigger than a standard football that has a mesh pocket, a key clip, and a small handle, which is pretty impressive.

There’s also a dedicated laptop compartment, though we have our reservations about it. It’s the side-opening pocket along the main compartment’s flap, and it has a fair amount of padding for protection. The trouble is, this flap also doubles as the Base Camp Voyager’s back panel when it’s in backpack mode. Unfortunately, the amount of padding is not enough, and it feels like our laptop is acting as the frame sheet and is part of the bag’s structure—not ideal since that would make it an exceptionally expensive frame sheet.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Laptop Sleeve

Access to the main compartment is also a step up from the Base Camp Duffel. The opening is wider, making packing easier because there’s more space exposed and visible. One minor annoyance to access was the right shoulder strap. Since the shoulder straps are mounted on the flap as opposed to along the top edge, the strap gets dragged and caught up on the flap when you fold it open. It’s only a minor inconvenience, though, since you can unclip the strap, but it did take some getting used to coming from the Base Camp Duffel, which didn’t have this issue.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Main Compartment

Inside the main compartment, it’s as spacious as one would expect from a 32-liter duffle bag. There’s a mesh pocket underneath the flap for a pair of gloves, face towels, or small items like tubes of toothpaste, lotion, liquid soap, and other toiletries. Pro-tip: we suggest having a dedicated Dopp kit—such as the Bellroy Dopp Kit —for toiletry items.

Keeping things separate isn’t too big a problem inside either. Packing cubes always help organize clothes, but the Base Camp Voyager also comes with its own divider. It attaches via toggles and loops scattered roughly four-inch apart from each other. It works for the most part, though the toggles frequently became undone when we unpacked. It’s still handy for a short trip—you can use the divider to separate fresh and unused clothing, progressively adjusting it to one side as you accumulate more laundry.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager 32L Compressed

We liked the Base Camp Duffel when we first looked at it, and we think that the Base Camp Voyager is a much more refined duffle bag with its improved features. Yes, the laptop compartment is a bit lacking in terms of protection, but the Base Camp Duffel lacks it altogether. With only a few nitpicks to work out, it’s a solid duffle bag you can also use as a backpack.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • Can be carried like a duffel or a backpack
  • The bag itself can pack into its shoe compartment for storage
  • Has an adjustable divider inside the main compartment
  • Enjoying the touches on this pack like the hideable backpack straps & water bottle compartment
  • Backpack straps can get in the way of access
  • The interior divider works well when it stays in place—it can become detached easily
  • We’re wary of keeping our laptop in the allotted sleeve—there’s just not a ton of protection or structure to the duffel

Our Verdict

Compare to similar products, our analysis and test results.

The North Face Base Camp Voyager is an ergonomic travel backpack and came out of our testing as one of our top choices for livability. It features a variety of great easy-access pockets on the bag's exterior and implements many tech-friendly designs that are perfect for the business traveler on the go. The interior is simple yet effective in its organization; it has just enough features to keep your clothes packed nicely without overwhelming you with pockets and pouches everywhere. Read on to see why the Voyager is one of our top bags for travelers moving light and fast.

Performance Comparison

Storage & Protection

Travel backpacks are designed to help streamline your travel by freeing up your hands from pulling clunky suitcases and toting unwieldy duffel bags. The compact size of the Voyager isn't going to win any awards for the amount of gear that it can pack, but that is not why you'd consider this bag in the first place. It excels in keeping your travel essentials, like electronics, IDs, tickets, and headphones handy and safe.

Though most of the travel backpacks we tested are all about the same size, the Voyager is on the smaller side. It is only available in two size options, 26-liters and 35-liters. We tested the larger 35-liter size and found it offers just enough space to hold a weekend's worth of clothes, assuming you don't chronically overpack. What we did like about its design is that no matter how full we crammed the main compartment, all of the external pockets remained fully usable. The same can't be said for all bags, where one overstuffed pocket can cannibalize space from another. We also wish the Voyager had some form of compression straps to keep contents in the right spit. While it is nice not to have extra straps flapping around in the way when you're not using them, we did miss the ability to lock our gear in securely for transit or to help squeeze in that one extra shirt.

Travel backpacks should be able to provide a bit of protection from the elements in case you get caught in a rain shower during transit. The recycled 300-denier polyester exterior of the Voyager beads off heavy rain with no issues. Unfortunately, the zippers are a weak spot in this bag, and a fair bit of water did seep into the main compartment. Many bags utilize an additional zipper flap to solve this issue, but the Voyager does not have this extra protective feature.

While it could use some work regarding overall structure and waterproofing, we are big fans of the technology protection pockets on the Voyager . The main laptop sleeve can hold up to a 16-inch laptop, and in addition to this, there are two other slip pockets. All three are fleece-lined, making them perfect for holding tablets, smaller laptops, or any relatively thin object you'd prefer to keep scratch-free.

Ease of Use

No matter what your purpose or method of travel is, everyone has a handful of essential items they need to be able to access quickly while on the go. A book for the train, headphones for the plane, or snacks in the car should all be within easy reach and should definitely not require you to dig around or empty the contents of your bag. For most luggage, backpacks included, it's also common to live out of the bag for a few days at a time. This is especially true if you're staying in different accommodations frequently, hopping from one local to another. The Voyager was one of our favorite bags for this type of travel because it was easy to use in "travel mode" and as a dresser away from home as needed.

The external pockets on the Voyager are the stars of the show here. We love that they remain easy to use, no matter how full the bag is packed. We also like the variety in shape, material, and size of each pocket. The larger compartment is excellent for a bulkier item or book, and the second pocket has pouches within it for organizing a phone, keys, lip balm, or other small essential bit of gear.

We also found the top-loading laptop pocket to be refreshing. Many travel backpacks employ a sideways-facing zipper for laptop pockets orientated along the length of the back panel. The Voyager's unzips from the top, making it easier to pull out or stow your laptop with the bag sitting upright in front of you. We also appreciate that the zipper spans the width of the bag and then down the sides a bit, creating an excellent wide opening for your laptop to slip into.

One of our favorite features of the Voyager was the ease with which we could live out of this bag. The main compartment has a collapsible center divider that perfectly segments the compartment into two separate spaces perfectly sized to accommodate a short stack of folded clothes in each one. We loved that we could easily search through the clothes on the bottom without disturbing what was on top. The mesh pocket found on the inside of the main flap was great for stowing smaller items such as socks or toiletries.

Since the size of this bag limits the amount of clothes you can pack, it is likely that for longer trips, you might want to pair it with your favorite rolling carry on luggage . The Voyager has a luggage handle passthrough sleeve located on the back panel that is easy to use and keeps your bag secure, making it a perfect complementary bag to use with your standard luggage.

the north face base camp voyager travel backpack review - the luggage pass-through sleeve is large enough to slide on easily...

Comfort & Fit

The Voyager is a reasonably comfortable backpack with supportive padding and straps. It lacks some of the robust suspension features that other bags in our travel backpack review have, but given the small size and capacity, we never felt that the pack's weight was cumbersome or uncomfortable. Needless to say, we didn't miss any of those features on the Voyager.

The stiff back panel of the Voyager holds its shape well and provides support and structure to the bag when full and empty. It is complemented by two sets of plush yet firm padding that run down either side of the back. The vented space in between these helps with breathability. The backpack straps are adequately padded, although they didn't wow us during testing. We appreciate that there is an adjustable chest strap, but felt that they shoulder straps were a bit narrow for our liking. Unlike many bags we tested, they don't have the option to stow away when not in use.

Versatility

Despite being a specialized travel backpack, the Voyager has a stylish design combined with durable materials, making it a highly versatile option to keep in your arsenal of travel bags. It won't be a one-bag-fits-all solution, but you could just as easily use this bag to go from your hotel to the office as you could from the hotel to the beach.

Despite being a con for some, the small size of the Voyager is actually one of its best features in terms of versatility. Many other travel backpacks are simply too large to use as anything but luggage. While the design isn't groundbreaking, we like that you can fold the internal divider flat and use the bag to bring supplies to the office for a work meeting or to roll up some towels and head to the beach. The four muted color options don't stand out too much but still offer enough variety to find one that fits your style.

Should You Buy The North Face Base Camp Voyager?

Not all travel has to be month-long trips to the other side of the world, and many travel bags may be overkill for a short weekend away. The North Face Base Camp Voyager fills this niche and fits the criteria for the minimalist traveler who is looking for a standalone travel backpack or for a traveler looking for a mid-sized pack to pair with another suitcase. It's versatile enough to fill a few different roles that backpacks might play, including plentiful storage for technology. Lastly, it is well-priced among our lineup of the best travel backpacks, providing good value. We recommend the Voyager to someone looking for an easy-to-use travel backpack to fill multiple requirements, whether for weekend trips, weekday work travel, or a tech bag.

the north face base camp voyager travel backpack review - the voyager is easy to access all the pockets and easy to live out of.

What Other Travel Backpacks Should You Consider?

Some people are on the road or in the sky more than others. In that case, a small backpack may not be enough to bring the comforts of home with you on your travels. If this sounds like you, the Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a great bag that can haul a significantly larger amount of gear with comfort and ease; we could fit double the amount of clothes we could pack in the Voyager. The Porter is only slightly more expensive than the Voyager and offers extra features, such as a stowable harness system and internal compression straps. If you need even more space, the Osprey Farpoint 40 is even beefier. This bag has one of the most comfortable carrying and harness systems of any travel backpack we tested, which is great because it is available in sizes up to 70 liters. Its main compartment isn't the most organized, but it's adequate for life on the road. On the other hand, if you liked the size and capacity of the Voyager but not the price tag, we'd recommend checking out the Coowoz Essentials . This carry on backpack is quite similar in size, layout, and features to the Voyager but clocks in at a quarter of the price. True, the quality and ease of use aren't nearly as pleasant, but the price of the Coowoz is hard to beat, and its performance is above average for its cost.

Half price compared to station lockers and airport lockers

Luggage lockers, also called city lockers, are generally at least double as expensive on a daily basis compared to LuggageHero’s luggage storage service.

Until recently, travelers could only stow their bags in these luggage lockers offering very little flexibility in regard to pricing and where to go, and luggage deposit. Also, LuggageHero offers stores in countless places in order for you to always have the option of dropping off your luggage in a safe environment. Unlike luggage lockers in stations and airports, LuggageHero offers both hourly and daily rates. LuggageHero strives to offer flexible and cheap luggage storage nearby you at all times.

LuggageHero’s users can store luggage of any size and/or shape in any of our store locations. It doesn’t matter if it is ski equipment, photo equipment, or backpacks. LuggageHero’s customers can choose to be charged by the hour or choose our daily rate, regardless of what they store.

We can stow your bags for several days

LuggageHero also provides multi-day storage because we know flexibility is essential when you travel.

LuggageHero offers a lower daily rate when you store your luggage for longer. From the second day onwards, our customers pay from only €4.5 per bag per day.

Visiting the biggest city of the largest country in the World can be overwhelming and exciting. That's why we advise you to start your trip from the City Center. First destination, of course - Red Square, which plays important role in the history of Russia. The buildings surrounding the Square are all significant in some respect. Lenin's Mausoleum, for example, contains the embalmed body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union. Nearby there is brightly domed Kremlin and the palaces and cathedrals of the Saint Basil's Cathedral, and one of the oldest and authentic Russian Market called GUM.

One of the most notable art museums in Moscow is the Tretyakov Gallery. It is one of the biggest Museums in Russia and contains both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Other great Museums options: Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, The State Historical Museum of Russia, and the Polytechnical Museum. Also, Moscow is the heart of the Russian performing arts, including ballet and circus.
