The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. The Best Cruise Lines, Ranked By Their Reviews

  • Cruise lines adapted to the new normal with safety protocols and vaccine requirements, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for travelers.
  • Top-ranked cruise lines offer luxurious amenities and unforgettable experiences, making each trip a journey of a lifetime.
  • From family-friendly options to exclusive adult-only escapes, there's a cruise line suited for every type of traveler's preferences and needs.

The cruise industry is quite popular worldwide, and the competition among cruise line companies has been quite tough. Most tourists, composed of couples, groups, families, or even solo travelers, would opt for cruise trips rather than backpacking trips since vacationing on a ship with a variety of locations packed with different activities is more enjoyable than booking a long-week trip to just one city.

Despite being hit pretty badly by the Global Pandemic, it paved the way for the cruise lines to explore and renovate their cruises. Adopting the new normal onboard , there are a few things to remember before booking a trip : check the safety protocols that they are following on board, vaccine requirements, safety procedures, and guidelines for wearing protective equipment. These 16 cruise lines were ranked as the best based on reviews and provide the best amenities, luxury, and, most importantly, a trip of a lifetime.

Directly with the Cruise Line

In some cases, booking directly with the cruise line can be best because it eliminates a third party. If there's a problem with your reservation or you need to make a change, you don't have to worry about the booking site and the cruise line pointing fingers at each other.

This may be the best approach if you know which cruise line you want to book and which cities you want to visit. However, you may miss out on promotions offered by third-party sites.

Simple search functions.

No hassles with third parties for problems, changes or cancellations.

Less likely to get scammed by fraudulent sites.

Comparing cruise prices across websites

Without being able to compare prices, it can be a challenge to determine the best site for booking a cruise. To make it easier to compare, we priced out a 7-night Caribbean cruise for two adults.

We selected the lowest-priced balcony room on Royal Caribbean departing from Miami in August 2023. Here are the results:

Mitigate cancellation policy risks with travel insurance

If you're worried your trip plans being disrupted by bad weather or a change of plans, travel insurance might help. This optional standalone insurance can be purchased separately from your cruise bookings.

But you might not even need to pay out-of-pocket for trip insurance because many credit cards offer travel insurance as a built-in benefit to customers who pay for travel expenses on that card.

Booking a cruise recapped

When looking for the best way to book a cruise, the price is virtually the same on every website. The difference lies in how each seller sweetens the deal.

Several cruise booking sites set themselves apart from the competition by offering additional benefits to encourage booking through them. Additionally, being able to book other parts of your trip — like flight and excursions — on the same site, or offering access to a travel agent, distinguishes some of the best cruise websites.

When prices are the same, we recommend cruise bookers compare the perks being offered, then book on the site with the most appealing bonuses, like onboard credits, airline miles, hotel points or cash back.

If you're searching for cruises on a third-party website, you may question the legitimacy of that site. This is especially true if the site doesn't look professional or some of the information is outdated.

For this reason, you should stick with one of the best cruise booking sites on this list because they've been vetted for legitimacy and have a good track record with travelers.

Yes, last-minute deals can be the best way to book a cruise. If your travel plans are flexible, these deals can save you a lot of money. Keep in mind that you may not be able to book your preferred destination or routing if it is sold out.

Unfortunately, most cruise lines do not offer free cancellations or changes to take advantage of price drops after you book. Passengers can always negotiate with a booking site or cruise line, but they aren't obligated to refund the difference. Instead, they may offer you onboard credit, complimentary excursions or credit toward another cruise booking.

Cruise Lines Ranked From Worst to Best

Cruise line

Looking to make your next adventure a seafaring one? Or maybe you want an all-inclusive vacation that doesn’t require a ton of planning? We have the skinny on the world’s best and worst cruise line operators.

Generally speaking, if you’re booking a cruise, you’ll fall into one of three categories: mainstream, premium or luxury. Mainstream cruises come in all types, but they are generally the most affordable. Premium lines tend to be more laid-back and thus attract an older clientele. The food and cabins are far better on these boats, but you’ll pay more for the privilege — and the serenity. Lastly, luxury cruises will run over $400 a night, but you’ll see and feel the difference. The food will be some of the best you’ve ever had and the room may be larger than your own home.

With all this in mind, check out how each of the best-known cruise lines rank before booking your next voyage.

19. Costa Cruises

Costa Cruises

Rating: 3.2 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 18 ships Top departure points: Barcelona, Venice (Italy), Savona/Genoa (Italy), Pointe-A-Pitre (Guadeloupe), Singapore Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe, transatlantic Starting price: $119/night

Note: The rating information was sourced from Cruiseline's pre-pandemic numbers; however, we've excluded any cruise lines that have since shuttered.

Bottom Line: Costa Cruises

Costa Cruises

It’s hard to forget the 2012 disaster involving a Costa Concordia that killed 32 people and left a capsized boat bobbing off the coast of Italy for over a year. Even without that accident, Costa doesn’t have the best reputation.

It mostly caters to Europeans looking to party hard at a good price. But families will find the kids' areas to their liking, including the children-sail-free promotions. Folks looking for peace and quiet best avoid these boats, and the tobacco averse among us be warned: Every bar has a designated smoking section.

Costa is known for its fun entertainment options and it was the first cruise line to offer spa cabins.

What Customers Say About Costa Cruises

Costa Cruises

Overall rating: 3.3 Cruise: 7 Night Blue Is The Color (Rome roundtrip) Date: November 2017 Ship: Costa Pacifica Cabin type: Oceanview Traveled as: Large group

“[Whirlwind] tour of a lifetime. The ports and excursions were well worth the trip, though I would not sail this particular cruise line again. I recommend taking time after the excursion, which are usually only 4 hours or so, and touring the cities on your own to get away from the commercial aspects.” — amnayo

18. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises

Rating: 3.3 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 19 Top departure points: Miami, Barcelona, Rio De Janeiro, Genoa (Italy), Civitavecchia (Italy) Top destinations: Transatlantic, Europe (northern, western and Mediterranean), Asia, Africa, Middle East, South America Starting price: $69/night

Bottom Line: MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises

No matter where you sail with MSC, which is based in Italy, it will have 50 to 85 percent European passengers. Regardless of nationality, folks who pick this operator are looking for a budget cruise for the whole family, as kids 3-11 are free and 12- to 17-year-olds board at reduced prices.

Passengers book "experiences," which are much different than U.S.-based cruise operators. These determine what type of cabin you occupy and any extra perks.

The ships are nice and the newest in the industry, but there is a lot more permitted smoking aboard the European cruises than those based in the U.S. Don’t expect amazing food or a party atmosphere.

“We were surprised at the number of senior citizens. Unclear if it was the ship, the itinerary or the time of trip, but after 4 MSC cruises, this was the first where it felt like a retirement home." — evieward

17. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line

Rating: 3.5 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 17 Top departure points: Miami, New York City, Seattle, Port Canaveral (Florida), Civitavecchia (Italy) Top destinations: Caribbean, Alaska (inside passage), Europe (Mediterranean) Starting price: $146/night

Bottom Line: Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian is best known for the quality and creativity of its food, and it was the first cruiser to offer flexible dining options. The upscale suites are more akin to a luxury hotel than a ship cabin, with a private sundeck and restaurant. And there’s plenty for the kids, like Nickelodeon-themed breakfasts and Cirque du Soleil-inspired entertainment.

Parents will enjoy the Broadway-caliber performances and comedy. Some ships also feature a water park and sports decks that include a bungee trampoline, spider web climbing frame, multiple corkscrew water slides and a ropes course.

Drawbacks include small cabins with tight bathrooms and extra charges for the best food options.

What Customers Say About Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian Bliss in New York

Overall rating: 3.9 Cruise: 7 Night Southern Caribbean (San Juan roundtrip) Date: December 2019 Ship: Norwegian Epic Cabin type: Balcony Traveled as: Singles/friends

“I have cruised NCL many times, but it may be my last. I am still not happy they changed the itinerary after I booked the cruise, and the overall attention to guest satisfaction has gone way down. Unless you have to financially, DO NOT take advantage of the airfare option. They had me fly from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale to Atlanta and then to Puerto Rico. Many other guests I spoke with had a similar experience. Also, seriously look for other options/companies that offer shore excursions than NCL. They were my favorite.” — Wisest1

16. Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

Rating: 3.7 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 23 ships Top departure points: Miami, Galveston (Texas), Port Canaveral (Florida), Fort Lauderdale, (Florida) New York City Top destinations: Caribbean, Panama Canal, Mexico Starting price: $124/night

Bottom Line: Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Cruise Lines

The jester of the mainstream cruise lines, Carnival has a reputation for its boisterous boats. These cruises are popular with party animals and singles — especially if those folks enjoy hairy chest contests, endless buckets of beer bottles (these cost extra, FYI), late-night comedy and food endorsed by Guy Fieri.

Children are, of course, welcome as well. To that end, Carnival hosts Dr. Seuss-themed brunches and story hours for the youngsters, or the kid in all of us.

There are few quiet spaces on Carnival boats, with music, loud and colorful decor, and regrettable adult decision-making ruling the roost.

What Customers Say About Carnival Cruise Lines

Overall rating: 3.8 Cruise: 4 Night Western Caribbean (Miami roundtrip) Date: January 2020 Ship: Carnival Victory Cabin type: Suite Traveled as: Family (older children)

“We had fun on a four-day getaway for a reasonable cost. Ship was clean and food was delicious. I will take a newer Carnival if I go on a longer cruise. The ocean suites are worth the cost.” — bonnycorn

15. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises

Rating: 3.8 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 21 Top departure points: Fort Lauderdale (Florida), Yokohama (Japan), Southampton (England), Sydney (Australia), Vancouver (Canada) Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, transatlantic, South Pacific, Europe (Mediterranean) Starting price: $89/night

Bottom Line: Princess Cruises

Diamond Princess cruise is docking on Toba island, Japan

Princess offers quality at an affordable price. Families and couples are drawn to the shorter cruises while longer ones tend to attract retirees and empty-nesters. Educational classes are included, for adults and kids — and there’s even yoga for children. Couples can get married on board in a chapel.

Food is solid, and there are no restrictions on mealtimes. Unfortunately, childcare is lacking for kids 3 and under. And for an extra charge, folks can enter a lottery for behind-the-scenes ship tours.

This is not a cruise line for singles and hard partiers.

What Customers Say About Princess Cruises

Royal Princess Cruise

Overall rating: 4.6 Cruise: 17 Night Roman Passage (Rome to Fort Lauderdale) Date: December 2018 Ship: Pacific Princess Cabin type: Suite Traveled as: Couple

“This cruise was a wonderful experience for both my wife and me. We especially enjoy the ‘days at sea,’ and the transatlantic aspect included eight consecutive days at sea crossing the Atlantic Ocean. There is nothing like sitting on your balcony and seeing nothing but ocean waters all around you. It gives you a perspective on the world and the universe around you.” — draronson

14. Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean

Rating: 3.9 Class: Mainstream Top departure points: Fort Lauderdale (Florida), Miami, Sydney (Australia), Cape Liberty (New Jersey), Shanghai (China) Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, Caribbean, South Pacific Starting price: $154/night

Bottom Line: Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean

Families looking for a great experience at a good cost — essentially an alternative to Disney — want to book with Royal Caribbean . And outdoors, sporty folks will love the adrenaline-rush activities at sea. Think rock climbing, surfing simulations, ice skating, ziplining, skating and even boxing.

Entertainment options include Broadway-caliber performances as well as ice skating, dive shows and original productions. If you’re antisocial or looking for quiet relaxation, this is not your boat.

“Please serve sweetened ice tea. Sugar does not melt easily in cold tea. The main dining room needs an efficiency review because it's much too slow. Servers very often carry one little item, disappear for long periods and are inefficient! They are well-meaning and pleasant but need a manager with good organizational and efficiency skills to make it work smoothly.” — pacificanelia

13. Holland America Line

Holland America Line

Rating: 3.9 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 15 Top departure points: Fort Lauderdale (Florida), Amsterdam (Netherlands), San Diego, Venice (Italy), Vancouver (Canada) Top destinations: Europe (northern and Mediterranean), transatlantic, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Panama Canal Starting price: $79/night

Bottom Line: Holland America Line

Holland America Line

If you’re looking to spend the majority (or all) of your time on board, entertained day and night with a thumping party atmosphere, then steer far clear of Holland America. These cruises are for multigenerational families and folks who want to explore the various port stops for more than an hour.

Holland America curates special itineraries like an after-hours tour of St. Petersburg’s State Hermitage Museum. The lounge/bar areas are low-key and upscale, and the libraries are New York Times-themed. There are a blues club and solid restaurant options.

Deck dining leaves much to be desired, and the lack of robust entertainment options might weigh on younger kids and teenagers.

Silversea Cruises

Rating: 3.9 Class: Luxury Fleet: 13 Top departure points: Barcelona, Piraeus (Greece), Venice (Italy), Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego (Argentina), Fort Lauderdale (Florida) Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe (northern, western, eastern and Mediterranean) Starting price: $2,970

Bottom Line: Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises

Older couples who like a formal atmosphere and attentive service flock to these boats. It helps that fares include gratuities, wine, and top-shelf champagne and spirits. But there are also smaller indulgences like Bulgari toiletries and Pratesi linens that keep guests coming back.

The restaurants are exceptional, and multi-course dinners can be served in your cabin, which is more than likely a suite since most of the fleet only has this type of accommodation.

Laid-back folks might find the vibe too stuffy, and families want to avoid these journeys at all costs. Children have little to do among such refinement.

Silversea Cloud

Overall rating: 3.7 Cruise: 7 Night Alaska (Seward to Vancouver) Date: June 2018 Ship: Silver Shadow Cabin type: Balcony Traveled as: Couple

“Have sailed twice on Princess — you can get a penthouse suite on Princess and get just as good of service and twice as much room and regular unlimited food. Silver Shadow has great personal service, but at the penthouse level on other ships, you get the same for far less money. I would recommend Silver Shadow only to someone willing to pay a high price to be alone on a ship.” — traveldan

Cunard

Rating: 4.0 Class: Premium Fleet: 3 Top departure points: Southampton (England), Sydney (Australia), New York City, Tokyo, Melbourne (Australia) Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, South Pacific, transatlantic, Europe (western, northern) Starting price: $299/night

Bottom Line: Cunard

Cunard

Board a Cunard ship for its sophisticated atmosphere and top-notch activity slate, complete with quality lectures and classes and theater-screened movies. The Queen Mary 2 features a planetarium for those dark, starry nights at sea. British touches include traditional afternoon tea and plenty of fish and chips at the pub.

Passengers skew older, more in the retiree realm, but summer attracts families who want upscale at a good price. And if parents do travel with toddlers, they can have dinner out with Cunard’s night nursery service.

Some sections are closed off to lower-paying guests, and the nightlife is almost nonexistent.

Bottom Line: Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises

Cruisers looking for style and substance without breaking the bank hop aboard Celebrity boats. Their floating cities feature actual patches of grass and world-renowned art collections, along with innovative dining options, educational classes and playful activities like water volleyball with ship personnel.

Nighttime entertainment might be a comedy burlesque show or a few top-shelf bourbons at any of the several swanky nightclubs. Or relax in the spa, take a steam or just call the concierge and have it all brought to your cabin. There are even babysitting options for families.

Drawbacks include tons of extra charges for things like the specialty restaurants and the stage shows that don’t measure up to the competition.

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Rating: 4.1 Class: Luxury Fleet: 5 Top departure points: Miami, Barcelona, Venice (Italy), Civitavecchia (Italy), Vancouver (Canada) Top destinations: Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe (Mediterranean, northern), Caribbean, Alaska Starting price: $2,899/night

Seven Seas Navigator

For those willing to spend, a trip aboard Regent comes with everything included in the price. And by everything, that means roundtrip airfare, alcohol and gratuities, curated shore excursions at every stop and a pre-cruise night in a hotel. Couples and singles love these cruises, but families not so much.

Wi-Fi is only included in the upper tiers of cabin accommodations, but free throughout common spaces. And while the boats are spacious and never feel crowded, that can sometimes be a negative, as you might feel like the only person who showed up for the party that night.

“Everything on board the ship was EXQUISITE! Unfortunately, we felt so cheated by the poor tours that Regent had arranged. The tour guides were either disorganized or unable to communicate, and we just left feeling shortchanged. We've been on other cruises where the cruise ship company had arranged really enriching and wonderful excursions. Sadly, this is the only area Regent fell short. But the experience onboard did exceed all of our expectations.” — SunseekerChuck

8. Oceania Cruises

Rating: 4.1 Class: Premium Fleet: 6 Top departure points: Barcelona, Miami, Southampton (England), Civitavecchia (Italy), Venice (Italy) Top destinations: Europe (northern, western and Mediterranean), Asia, Africa, Middle East Starting price: $999/night

Bottom Line: Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises

It’s hard to beat the dining options aboard Oceania ships, with a bistro from venerable French chef Jacques Pepin, a highly rated Pan-Asian restaurant and the all-inclusive packages. Before or after a meal, check out the star-studded art collection with names like Picasso, Miró and Hirst.

These journeys are aimed at couples looking for upscale travel and amazing food and wine experiences with a healthy dose of culture. It might not be the best family experience unless your children are extremely precocious and want Mommy and Daddy to have a memorable experience.

Try to book the newer Riviera or Marina, as some of the older ships lack the pizzazz and amenities of these two.

“Our first cruise with Oceania. Exceptional food. We loved that so much was included — specialty dining (which was like eating in 5-star restaurants) didn't cost extra, bottled water was handed out at every port, espresso drinks and pastries were always available, laundry was included (and if you wanted to do it yourself, it was free). The hands-on cooking classes were fantastic. The lectures were interesting. Afternoon tea with a string quartet was a nice touch. They were serious about keeping us healthy with hand washing and plastic wrap around buffets. We went to ports where norovirus is endemic, and to their great credit, no one got sick. Great service, and always with a smile.” — elenaprior

Cruise Seabourn Odyssey

Seabourn takes guests to amazing ports, but they truly shine in the onboard experience.

Several of their ships have all-suite accommodations, and some of those are spa suites unmatched by any other ocean liner. Cruises usually come with a Marina Day in which the crew offers a variety of aquatic activities and a saltwater pool.

Folks looking for a formal cruise experience might be turned off by Seabourn’s casual luxury. But those looking for an upscale experience and port stops where few others go, this is your bag.

Just leave the kids behind, as these journeys are designed for adults.

Even if this cruise isn’t memorable for you, it will be for your accountant.

It would be hard not to enjoy all the bang for your buck, which includes all-inclusive fares that cover some wine and spirits and all onboard gratuities. They also offer roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles, a cabin with an ocean view and likely a balcony (70 percent have them), incredible food options in a Parisian-Polynesian fusion theme, and a swim and snorkel session at Paul Gaugin’s private French Polynesian island.

This tiny fleet isn’t great for singles or families, but couples seeking a yacht-like jaunt through the South Pacific will be well rewarded.

5. Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara excels at its branded and abundant shore excursions in places like the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Although the decor is dated and stodgy, the pool and hot tub area is small and the cabin bathrooms are tight, you’ll be easily enticed off the ship by nighttime entertainment options in port.

Azamara offers up to 17-day travel for serious adventurers, hitting numerous stops in its 240 ports spread across 66 countries. House alcohol and gratuities are included with the high daily cost, and the spacious and lightly crowded ships make cruising ideal.

Best to leave the kids and older family members onshore for this ride.

Bottom Line: Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Sun in Eidfjord

Viking is only a few years into its expansion from river cruises to the high seas, but it didn’t take long for people to notice the luxury aboard these ships and itineraries that put a premium on destinations — some lasting for as many as six months.

All cabins have their own private veranda, and the fare includes one complimentary shore excursion at each stop.

These trips are designed for couples and adults who want a refined experience that could last for several weeks to a few months, and for this reason, there is no programming aboard for children.

Windstar Cruises

Rating: 4.3 Class: Premium Fleet: 6 Top departure points: Athens (Greece), Lisbon (Portugal), Barcelona, San Juan (Puerto Rico) Top destinations: Europe (northern, Mediterranean), Caribbean, transatlantic Starting price: $999/night

Bottom Line: Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises

True to its name, Windstar attempts to recreate the experience of sailing while aboard a massive cruise liner (it looks cool, though). Families with teenage children or well-behaved youngsters will find much to love on the decks of Windstar’s recently renovated fleet. Ships sport retractable marinas for water skiing, sailing, kayaking and snorkeling.

The overall experience skews casual in atmosphere and dress, but there isn’t much to keep younger and more active children entertained. Food is well prepared, but alcoholic beverages are not included with the daily fare and cabins don’t have Wi-Fi.

Older ships are also showing their age.

Disney Cruise Line

Rating: 4.4 Class: Mainstream Fleet: 4 ships Top departure points: Port Canaveral (Florida), San Diego, Miami, Galveston (Texas), Dover (England) Top destinations: Caribbean, Mexico, Northern Europe Starting price: $672/night

Bottom Line: Disney Cruise Line

Disney Fantasy by Disney Cruise Line

Disney is the ultimate cruise line for families. There is no reason to book this expensive option unless you’re bringing the kids, as it is entirely geared toward their enjoyment with some of the best stage shows in the business.

It’s also pricey for its class, but there’s a good reason for that. Entertainment options for kids abound, day and night, and Disney is the top cruise operator for amenities geared toward babies and toddlers, like drop-off childcare and diapers in the gift shop.

Adults have plenty to do themselves, like soak up the sun poolside or traipse around the private island. One thing adults cannot do aboard these ships is gamble, which Disney has forbidden in the name of a family-centric atmosphere.

Cruise Critic announced its 2023 Editors' Picks Awards

Cruise Critic just announced its annual list of the Best Cruise Lines of The Year. This is the 15th iteration of the list compiled by the online cruise community’s international team of cruise experts.

The 2023 list is the most exhaustive to date, covering four cruise categories: ocean, river, expedition, and luxury cruises.

“This was a banner year for the cruise industry,” explained Colleen McDaniel, Editor-in-Chief of Cruise Critic , in a press release announcing the latest awards.

“We saw demand for cruises surpass pre-pandemic times, and a number of lines reported ships sailing at over 100% capacity. Cruising has always been a high-value vacation, but with costs of land- and air-based travel going through the roof, the true value of a cruise really hit home this year.”

To help consumers better choose cruises that meet their needs, interests and budgets, the broad categories are broken down along a number of dimensions—including best cabins, service, enrichment, dining, itineraries, shore excursions and more.

Here are the top winners in the Luxury Category:

Best Cruise Line

Best high-yield savings accounts of 2024, best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Silversea Cruises topped the list as Best Luxury Cruise Line for the second year in a row.

The line’s newest ship, Silver Nova , which holds 728 passengers was ranked as the Best New Luxury Ship. This environmentally-friendly ship, which began its inaugural cruise in August, 2023 is the industry’s first hybrid luxury cruise ship.

Cruise Critic noted:

“Silversea’s constant innovation and a desire to set the luxury bar ever higher sets it apart from all others. Sure, the line has suites, butlers, Champagne and caviar across the fleet, but it’s more than that–Silversea’s restaurants rival Michelin-starred establishments, its S.A.L.T. enrichment program is outstanding, and its art and décor are reminiscent of a five-star hotel. And Silver Nova is a giant step forward for a cruise line that has never been content with the status quo.”

Best Service

Crystal Cruises , which was relaunched by its new owner, Abercrombie and Kent Travel Group, was recognized for Best Service. The line has two newly-renovated ships: Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity , holding 606 and 740 passengers respectively.

“Crystal has built a reputation on exceptional service, and it comes down to the crew onboard, who are empowered to keep guests happy and satisfied, no matter the issue. Sailing on a Crystal ship feels like a vacation with family. No ask is too small–or too big–and service always comes with a sincere smile.”

Best Value for Money

Emerald Yacht Cruises , a line best known for its river ships, launched its first ocean-going vessel, Emerald Azzura , in 2022 followed by an identical sister ship, Emerald Sakara , in 2023. Both ships are intimate with a capacity of 100 passengers in 50 staterooms. The line was recognized for offering for Best Value for the Money.

“Sailing on an Emerald cruise ship feels a lot like seeing the world on your personal yacht – yet prices for cruises generally are less than what you’d pay on other luxury lines.”

The relationship between ship size and luxury

By definition, small ships hold fewer than 1200 passengers, usually making the cruise experience more intimate with more individualized service. Each of the picks in the luxury cruise category is a small ship.

“The size of these luxury ships is a fantastic benefit to travelers looking for that more exclusive travel experience,” McDaniel explains. “With fewer travelers onboard, the crew-to-guest ratio is able to deliver more catered, personalized service.”

McDaniel notes other ways in which ship size affects the cruising experience. “There’s also a greater space ratio onboard, allowing for less crowding and more space for guests to spread out and enjoy,” she says.

“And the smaller size of a ship also directly impacts ship itineraries. These ships can stop in smaller, more off-the-beaten-path ports than larger mega-ships – delivering a more unique adventure, and usually fewer travelers in port.”

“For the most part, luxury cruises appeal to a segment of travelers looking for similar experiences on land – more luxurious offerings, fewer crowds, and phenomenal activities. Luxury cruises tend to be longer than other cruises, so they appeal to guests who have ample time for vacation,” she adds.

How travelers can use the list

“For travelers who have never cruised before, our intent in creating this list is to provide a starting point to help guide them to the best experience for them, ” explains McDaniel.”

“If a cruise passenger is a foodie, and that’s one of the most essential parts of their travels–our list of the best dining at sea should help guide them to lines that will leave them satisfied and inspired. If they’re looking for five-star service, they should look no further than our winners in the best service category.”

You can't trust a cruise deal: Here's how to actually get the best value on your next sailing

Ashley Kosciolek

"Yeah, right," I muttered while staring at a deal on Royal Caribbean's homepage last week. A countdown clock just below the promotion told me that I only had seven hours, 40 minutes and 28 seconds left to pounce on the offer before it would magically disappear.

I knew it wasn't true. That deal would be back the next day.

I've been tracking the big promotions from the major cruise lines since November. Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line and a handful of other brands have been running the same standard bargains on their websites for months, each one claiming to have limited-time status.

What began as Black Friday promotions were repurposed and rebranded for wave season — the period during the first quarter of each year when cruise lines offer some of their best deals . Some have been extended as far out as the end of June.

cruise companies reviews

At first, I was thrilled that travelers had additional time to take advantage of the deals. On second thought, I realized that if a deal is set to run for more than half the year, it's no longer a true deal. It becomes the standard baseline for fares and inclusions. All the pressure to book right this second is being manufactured by the cruise lines.

Want to get the best bang for your buck when you book? Don't take a cruise line's deals at face value when it's offering dollars off or percentage discounts off the so-called regular rate.

Here's why those offers you're eyeing right now aren't anything new or special and what you should be looking for instead.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The truth about cruise deals

cruise companies reviews

Cruises are selling so well in 2024 that cruise lines don't need to offer deep discounts or extra perks that will make passengers salivate. In fact, inventory is already limited for the summer and into the fall for many lines. When there's enough demand, the deals don't have to be as good — and right now, they aren't. Sure, that high-percentage discount might catch your eye, but with cruise fares at all-time highs, you might not be saving as much as you think.

Plus, instead of offering extra perks (such as free drinks or Wi-Fi) as part of a limited-time promotion, cruise lines are either making them part of extra-fee packages or making them standard inclusions and pricing sailings accordingly.

Holland America , Celebrity Cruises and Princess Cruises will sell you "all-inclusive" package add-ons . Additionally, NCL continues to give passengers the same Free at Sea add-ons it's offered for years. Don't think you're getting something for nothing when the line gives you booking perks, such as free basic Wi-Fi and alcohol packages, shore excursion credits, complimentary dining in specialty restaurants, and free third and fourth passengers when sharing a cabin.

With that in mind, don't let those countdown clocks or "Ends today!" banners fool you. Cruise lines are notorious for pressuring passengers to book by making it seem as though their deals will expire in a matter of hours or days. When that timer runs out, the offers are almost always extended.

How you can actually save on your next cruise

cruise companies reviews

So, if cruise deals don't always offer the value they appear to on first blush, what's a traveler to do to ensure they're not overpaying? Here are some ways to save on your next booking.

Crunch the numbers

You can't trust exclamations of "2-for-1 fares" or "60% off" to indicate low prices. You need to know what the cruise you're eyeing usually costs to know when a better-than-average fare is on offer. Track cruise fares for your sailing, and it will be easier to determine whether you're scoring a deal when a cruise line offers you a discount. Fifty percent off a sailing isn't necessarily a bargain if the rates have increased first.

Also be sure that you're figuring out the true cost per day to see if you're paying an amount that's acceptable to you; the cruise fare is only the beginning. Most prices you see advertised are just the base cabin rate, per person, per night. Those numbers don't include taxes, port fees, daily gratuities (automatic service charges that can be more than $20 per person, per day on some lines) and things like travel to reach your embarkation port, hotel costs if you're heading into town early and spending for incidentals like drinks, shore excursions, souvenirs and spa treatments.

Set price-drop alerts

If you don't have time to look up cruise fares across several sellers every week, you can easily outsource that task. Use a website such as Cruiseline.com or Cruisewatch to set up price alerts for the ships and itineraries that interest you. If fares drop, you'll receive a notification that it might be time to book.

Use a travel agent

Do you know who already knows what cruises should cost and are experts at identifying great deals? Travel agents . Work with a trusted, cruise-knowledgeable adviser who can find you the absolute best fares and, perhaps, throw in a few extra complimentary add-ons. Plus, if something goes wrong during your voyage, you have a point of contact to make necessary arrangements on your behalf, which can also save you time and costly mistakes.

Be strategic about when you cruise

You will pay more or less for your cruise based on when it sails. So what's the best time to cruise ? If you're looking to save, try booking a sailing that departs during shoulder season or hurricane season (June through October), when prices tend to be lower. You might also want to avoid busy holiday and school break periods, when sailings are in the highest demand.

Be strategic about when you book

The timing of your booking relative to the sailing date is also a factor. It used to be that passengers could reel in lower prices for booking both well in advance of their cruises and also at the last minute. These days, with cruises soaring in popularity, last-minute deals are more difficult to come by than they used to be.

The best time to book is actually as early as possible. Plan to book months, if not years, in advance for the best pricing, as well as the best availability for the type of cabin you prefer.

Consider cabin type

This might seem obvious, but I'll remind you anyway: You'll almost always pay less for a windowless inside cabin than you will for any other type of accommodation on a ship. If all you plan to do in your room is sleep and shower, this could be a solid option if you want to save some cash.

You might also want to consider booking a guarantee cabin , which is another way to enjoy discounted rates. You'll be assigned a cabin in your chosen category, but you won't be able to choose which specific one it is. (Be warned that this could mean you're stuck in a room with an obstructed view or one that's near a noisy elevator or underneath the pool deck or kids club.)

Look to older ships

If you don't want an inside cabin and don't want to leave your fate in the hands of the guarantee gods, try pricing out a voyage on an older vessel. As a general rule, the older the hardware, the less expensive it tends to be to sail on it. The rule mostly applies on popular routes, such as in the Caribbean or Alaska, where you have a choice of ships. If the older ship is the only one on a far-flung, exotic route, the prices might not be as low.

Leverage points, miles and credit card offers

If you've racked up tons of points or miles, and you're looking to take a cruise, you can sail for less — or even for free — if you book through a portal like United Cruises , American Airlines Cruises or the American Express Cruise Privileges program, and apply your points or miles toward the cost. It's not always the best redemption value, but it will save you money versus paying outright for the entirety of your voyage.

Additionally, if you have a credit card that's offering extra points on gift card purchases, buy gift cards for your favorite cruise line, and use them to pay for part or all of your sailing.

Bottom line

Only you can decide whether a particular cruise offer is a good deal for you when you weigh your vacation budget against the fares you're paying and any extras your cruise line might include in the cost. Just because a cruise line is telling you something is a deal or a special limited-time offer doesn't mean you're getting especially good value for your money. When the same promotion runs for months on end, you need to dive deeper to find discounts — and not just depend on the cruise line to alert you to them.

How a negotiation over cable fees could weigh on Paramount’s sale

Paramount Global’s sale talks with David Ellison’s Skydance Media face a milestone later this week, but the battered Redstone family-controlled media company has been scrambling to meet another deadline – one that also carries huge implications.

On Tuesday, Paramount and Charter Communications agreed to a deadline extension as the two sides worked to hammer out a new distribution agreement for Paramount’s channels, which would replace a three-year pact that was due to expire this week, according to knowledgeable people who are not authorized to comment publicly on the high-stakes talks.

Charter pays Paramount significant fees to carry its channels, including CBS, BET, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, on Charter’s Spectrum television service. As Paramount’s cable networks lose viewers and advertising revenue declines, the company must protect the affiliate fees it receives from distributors, including Charter. Paramount cannot afford to lose such a key source of revenue from one of its primary partners.

The outcome of the negotiations could weigh on Paramount’s valuation in the event of a sale.

While the length of the contract extension is not clear, it does give Paramount some breathing room in what has become a chaotic and difficult period.

Paramount’s Chief Executive Bob Bakish was bounced on Monday , amid increasing tensions with controlling shareholder Shari Redstone, who is pushing to sell her stake in her family’s media empire .

He was replaced by three senior entertainment executives who now make up an “office of the CEO.” The company also reported earnings that beat estimates, but executives refused to take questions during their customary conference call with Wall Street analysts.

The company’s stock is down 50% in the past year. Paramount fell 7.2% Tuesday to $11.37 a share.

Nonvoting B-class shareholders have fumed over the terms of the Skydance deal , concluding that it would bestow Redstone with a rich premium at the expense of other shareholders. Meanwhile, independent directors are weighing the Ellison group’s sweetened offer, which has been described as its “best and final.”

Paramount’s board will soon lose five directors, including Bakish.

Even before the boardroom and management turmoil, Paramount was seen as having a weak hand in its negotiations with Charter, which currently offers 25 Paramount-owned television channels to its 13.7 million Spectrum TV subscribers.

“The majority of Paramount’s current U.S. cable networks are at risk,” Bank of America media analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich wrote in a research note for investors this week, adding that a bad result in the Charter talks could threaten Paramount’s financial foundation and potentially “impact the company’s ability to execute a sale under favorable terms.”

The reason: Paramount’s “TV media segment still generates an overwhelming percentage of the company’s earnings and cash flows,” Reif Ehrlich wrote. Investors and potential buyers have been watching the Charter talks closely as they consider how much Paramount is really worth.

Apollo Global Management has offered $26 billion, including the absorption of Paramount’s nearly $14 billion in debt, which some shareholders favor over the two-phase deal orchestrated by Ellison’s Skydance along with investment firms RedBird Capital Partners and KKR. Paramount had granted the Ellison group 30 days of exclusive negotiations. That period ends Friday, however, sources close to the sales process say they expect the talks to continue past this week.

Paramount and Charter representatives declined to comment.

Paramount Global, long known as Viacom , has struggled to adapt in the streaming era.

Broadcast network CBS has largely maintained its popularity – its February broadcast of the Super Bowl drew a record 123.4 million viewers – but the viewership shift has pummeled Paramount’s cable channels, including MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon, putting the company in a tough spot.

At the same time, cable companies are losing pay TV customers at a rapid clip and don’t want to give subscribers another reason to flee by asking them to pay more for programming that they don’t necessarily watch.

Stamford, Conn.-based Charter has increasingly balked at paying high fees for cable channels that have been hemorrhaging viewers in recent years as consumers shift to streaming and other video-on-demand options.

Charter also has demanded concessions on carriage terms for streaming services, such as Disney+ or Paramount+, which compete with its Spectrum channel bundles.

Last summer, Charter drew a hard line during its negotiations with Walt Disney Co., which led to a 10-day blackout of Disney-owned channels, including its ABC and ESPN networks. Charter threatened to permanently pull all the Disney channels from its Spectrum TV service unless Disney caved to some of its demands – a scenario that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

In the end, Disney sacrificed carriage on Spectrum for several smaller channels, including Freeform.

Losing networks could be particularly painful for Paramount.

More than a decade ago, Paramount programmed nearly three dozen cable channels and collected handsome fees for the distribution rights. However, over the years, distributors including Dish Network and Charter have refused to continue to carry what they view as nonessential ones – and that wrangling was expected to be a key hurdle in the Charter talks.

For example, Charter offers its customers five MTV channels: the main network MTV and spinoffs MTV2, MTV Classic, MTV Live and MTVU. MTV’s programming lineup relies heavily on “Awesomeness,” a twist on talent competitions. There are four Nickelodeon channels, the flagship kids network as well as Nick Jr., Nick Music and Nick Toons.

Charter is expected to push for the ability to drop channels with meager ratings.

“In our view, the critical carriage would be for Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central and Paramount Network,” Reif Ehrlich wrote.

One sticking point for distributors, including Charter, is that Paramount makes much of its content available to subscribers of Paramount+, the streaming service the company offers for $5.99 to $11.99 a month. That, in some cases, is less than what cable distributors pay for the same content.

The television programmers’ move to offer their own streaming services has rankled distributors, who feel that their longtime partners have turned into rivals. Charter Chief Executive Christopher Winfrey has said his company would take a tougher stance in its carriage negotiations.

“Our goals here are really to re-create a video ecosystem that works for everybody. Today, it doesn’t,” Winfrey said last week on the company’s earnings call. “It’s been broken, and it’s been broken for a while.”

Woodfibre LNG 'floatel' permit rejected by Squamish council

Floating temporary worker accommodation proposed as part of lng facility construction near squamish.

A large white ship is seen out at sea, with a large, red 'B' at the top, and to the top right, a printed name that reads 'Bridgemans Floatel'.

Social Sharing

The District of Squamish council voted to reject a one-year temporary use permit (TUP) that would clear the way for Woodfibre LNG to use a renovated cruise ship to house over 600 workers in Howe Sound.

The motion to permit the so-called "floatel" failed by a 4-3 vote. Councillors who voted against the plan cited safety concerns, environmental and community impacts, as well as a lack of information from the company.

"I am very concerned about the amount of risk we are opening ourselves up to," Coun. Lauren Greenlaw said.

"At the very least we need a deferral of the TUP to discuss outstanding issues — we need a bigger bond, hazard assessments. We need a waste management plan."

The floating temporary accommodation has been proposed as part of the natural gas liquefaction and export terminal construction project that is already underway on the former site of the Woodfibre pulp mill.

When complete, the facility will produce 2.1 million tonnes of LNG per year for overseas markets, according to the company's website.

Company disappointed

In a statement to CBC News, Woodfibre LNG president Christine Kennedy said she was disappointed with council's decision.

"The district has asked repeatedly since 2019 — to the company and to regulators — that the Woodfibre LNG project workforce be housed outside Squamish, which is exactly what the floatel delivers," Kennedy said.

"In a community that welcomes tens of thousands of visitors each year, the rhetoric of some council members directed toward the skilled craft workers that will make up the project's workforce seems out of place.... If these people visited as tourists, they would be welcomed."

The Woodfibre facility has approvals from the B.C. and  federal governments, as well as the Squamish Nation.

Squamish residents divided over new “floatel” plan

Tracey Saxby, executive director of the advocacy group My Sea to Sky, was pleased with council's decision.

"Last night was the first time that a government regulatory body actually listened to the community," Saxby told CBC's The Early Edition .

"The provincial and federal regulatory processes have failed us and it was left to local government to stand up and listen to the community. I'm really grateful for the local leadership that was shown."

Project a 'major challenge,' says mayor

About 200 people attended a public meeting last week and hundreds more submitted comments online, with the majority voicing opposition to the floatel.

Squamish Mayor Armand Hurford proposed a motion to approve a one-year temporary use permit with the possibility of one three-year renewal, rather than an initial term of three years.

He said the floatel's performance over the first year would provide clarity for the renewal discussion, but the motion was rejected.

In an email to CBC News, Hurford described the Woodfibre LNG project as a "major challenge" for the community.

"Our continued request has been for joint planning and we hope that everyone involved understands the importance of this request," he said in the email.

"We hope anything that comes to us going forward has an increased level of co-operation and alignment so that we can understand the entirety of what's proposed and that these issues can be considered in a more holistic approach."

He’s signed   laws to allow chaplains in public schools , mandate teaching kindergartners about the history of communism , and ban lab-grown meat that he declared was a plot hatched by the “global elite.”

“It’s a placeholder,” said Dante Scala, a political scientist at the University of New Hampshire, a state where DeSantis campaigned heavily but dropped out before its primary. “I don’t think he and his circle have figured out yet exactly what went wrong. … I don’t know that they have much of a clue what to do for 2028. So when you don’t know what else to do, keep doing the same thing.”

DeSantis calls abortion, marijuana amendments too ‘radical’ to pass

Across the country, bills aimed at transgender people have waned from this time last year, with bills dying even in GOP-controlled states such as Iowa.

But DeSantis said last week that he would “fight back” against new federal regulations banning discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity at universities and colleges.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed a lawsuit Monday, along with counterparts in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, to try to block the new federal rule.

“His social policies are core to both his identity and to his public brand,” said Gregory Koger, a professor of political science at the University of Miami. “He’s been at the forefront [of] translating them into policy. The rest of the party sees that as an agenda they can run with.”

Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, said although it didn’t appear culture war issues were at the top of national GOP voters’ minds in the primary, his focus on them wasn’t the reason for DeSantis’ failure.

“I don’t necessarily think his loss was a rejection of his approach,” Kondik said. “I just don’t think he ended up being all that compelling of an actual candidate.”

‘Kiss the ring’

In the closing days of his presidential campaign, DeSantis was vocal about his frustrations with Trump.

“You can be the most worthless Republican in America, but if you kiss the ring, [Trump will] say you’re wonderful,” DeSantis said in Iowa. “You can be the strongest, most dynamic, successful Republican and conservative in America, but if you don’t kiss that ring, then he’ll try to trash you.”

He held a video call with former donors in March during which he criticized Trump and his potential running mates despite having endorsed him as he dropped out of the race.

DeSantis slams Trump in private call to backers, reports say

But since then, DeSantis has said he would campaign with Trump if asked. The two finally met at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in late April, although Trump didn’t praise DeSantis personally.

“We had a great meeting yesterday,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The conversation mostly concerned how we would work closely together to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”

DeSantis has not publicly commented about the encounter, but reports indicate he agreed to help raise money for Trump’s campaign.

DeSantis has rejected the idea of a joint campaign appearance in Florida with Trump by saying the state was now safely Republican.

But Trump said outside his New York trial on charges of election interference that “I would much rather be in Georgia and Florida. I much rather be in states that are in play.”

The Biden campaign has also stepped up its presence in Florida, with Biden slamming the state’s 6-week abortion ban in Tampa and Vice President Kamala Harris doing the same in Jacksonville.

With Florida increasingly important, Koger said it was possible that DeSantis could be considered for Trump’s running mate, but there may be too much bad blood between them.

He said after former Vice President Mike Pence refused to delay certification of Biden’s win on Jan. 6, 2021 amid false claims of fraud, Trump might not trust someone who has criticized him.

“It’s less likely DeSantis gets picked than someone who has been less publicly confrontational over the last year,” Koger said. “Trump prizes loyalty and subservience, and wants to know that the next vice president he asks to violate the Constitution will do it.”

If DeSantis doesn’t get the nod from Trump, Scala said, “The running mate is probably going to be a fairly prominent player for the ‘28 nomination. … who will have been elevated by Trump to a sort of second-place standing. I also think that DeSantis showed enough weakness in ‘24 that he’s not going to dissuade other people from running.”

‘Self-reflection’

DeSantis’ appearances on the primary trail led to national stories listing his “most awkward” and “weirdest” campaign moments, including what seemed like forced laughter and smiles amid a failure to connect with voters in person in Iowa and New Hampshire.

“I think the lesson is part of politics is being likable, and building relationships with other human beings, and he’s working on that,” Koger said.

His lengthy battles with Walt Disney Co. over criticism of the so-called “don’t say gay” law and takeover of the former Reedy Creek special district also fell flat with national voters, Koger said.

“He was acting like a strong man, in person and in public, in ways that cost him support,” he said. “So, publicly, we’ve seen him make peace with Disney. That was a fight he picked because he thought it worked well for him. Now he’s realized that made him look petty and extreme. And now he’s backed off.”

In addition to praising Disney, DeSantis has also tried to soften his image with social media posts focusing on his family, including his wife, Casey, and their children’s new dog.

“From being abandoned on the streets of Tallahassee to finding a new home in the Governor’s residence … welcome Liberty!” DeSantis wrote on X.

Mac Stipanovich, a Tallahassee consultant who has been one of DeSantis’ harshest critics, said the key question for DeSantis was “how much insight he has into himself.”

“He’s promoting things that appeal to the Republican base, but I haven’t seen any signs of self-reflection and humility,” Stipanovich said.

“He just doesn’t have the talent, the special sauce that’s required of great politicians,” Stipanovich said. “Really good politicians are artists, not accountants.  … DeSantis is an accountant. He gets in a room and tries to figure it all out. He calculates the odds and the percentages and then he does something. That’s not the stuff of greatness.”

Kondik said Floridians can probably expect DeSantis’ culture warring to continue, for a simple reason: he doesn’t want to be left behind when a new conservative trend appears on the scene.

“There may very well be other things that come up between now and [2028] that become cultural hot buttons,” Kondik said. “Maybe some of those things will be ones DeSantis will end up dealing with in his remaining time as the governor of Florida.”
