Tonight, we'll have our welcome dinner to get to know each other better.

Day 4: Tuesday, October 29, 2024

Madaba & Mt Nebo

Today we travel south and visit the mosaic city of Madaba, where the oldest map of the Holy Land exists on the floor of St. George's Church. We then journey to Mt. Nebo, the site where the Prophet Moses looked over the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea before sending the Children of Israel across without him. Here you view 4th and 6th century Byzantine churches with wonderful mosaics. We then continue our journey to Petra and enjoy dinner tonight at our hotel.

Day 5: Wednesday, October 30, 2024

Petra & Wadi Rum

The red-rose city of Petra is a unique destination. More than 2000 years ago the area was settled by the Nabataeans who carved magnificent buildings in the sandstone. We begin our adventure with an optional horse ride, then walk through the Siq, an immense crack in the stone, to see at the end Petra's most impressive monument: the Treasury. You walk along the Street of Facades, see the Royal Tombs, and Qasr al Bint. After lunch we will drive 1.5 hours to the dramatic Wadi Rum, one of the most impressing desert landscapes in the world and view the spectacular rock formations, canyons and Nabatean rock inscriptions. This landscape is reminiscent of Lehi’s family’s journey through this area. At the end of the day will cross the Israeli border to Eilat, a beautiful vacation town on the Red Sea.

Day 6: Thursday, October 31, 2024

Eilat to Netanya

This morning you may choose to rise early and go for a swim in the Red Sea, walk along the beach walk or just sit and watch the sail boats in the harbor. We now journey North to Tel Aviv with may special stops along the way that most pilgrims don't get to see. The first is the Timna Mines and Park. These ancient mines were a source of silver and copper dating back to ancient times. There is some indication that Lehi and his sons may have been metalworkers and visited this site. Here we also visit a marvelous full-sized model Tabernacle based on the one revealed to Moses in the wilderness. After traveling north near Beersheba, we will visit Joppa, the site of Jonah’s departure, running away from his mission and the site of Peter’s vision which opened missionary work to the Gentiles. We will arrive to our hotel in Netanya, a beautiful resting point on the Mediterranean Sea for dinner.

Day 7: Friday, November 1, 2024

Caesarea - Mt. Carmel - Megiddo - Nazareth - Cana

“And on the morrow, they entered into Caesarea. Cornelius thy prayer is heard.” Enter Caesarea, remains of a city founded by Herod, residence of Pontius Pilate and a prison for Paul. Sit in the well-preserved amphitheater overlooking the blue sea and hear the story of Paul's conversion of the Centurion. The scenery begins to change to the beautiful green pastures and high rolling hills of the Jezreel Valley as we approach Mt Carmel where the prophet Elijah and the priests of Baal contested their faith. Not far away is Megiddo, the tragic site of ancient bloody battles where nations were won and lost. Upon these same tragic fields, the great and terrible last battle of Armageddon will be fought.

As we make our way towards the Sea of Galilee, we will visit Nazareth and the historic re-creation Nazareth Village, a living presentation of the life and times of Jesus of Nazareth. We will make our way towards the Sea of Galilee, drive through the village of Cana, where the Savior turned water into wine.

Day 8: Saturday, November 2, 2024

Sea of Galilee - Mount of Beatitudes - Capernaum - Tabgha

We will begin our Sabbath with a short devotional in the Valley of the Doves, walking where Jesus walked. We then travel to the Mount of Beatitudes where Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount is always a highlight to visitors. We will read the words of the greatest teacher of all time as He taught the greatest sermon of all time. Today, we will sail upon the Sea of Galilee to view the area of Jesus Christ's early ministry. As the wind carries your boat, note the halo of mountains that surrounds its shores. The St. Peter’s fish lunch today is included and not only tastes fabulous but makes a great memory. We will also visit Capernaum, where Jesus lived and recruited his first followers among the fishermen. The well-preserved city will amaze you as you sit in the synagogue and imagine Jesus' teaching and performing miracles in this important place. Today we will also visit the Magdala Synagogue dating back to the Savior’s Day, where a newly discovered stone portrays the symbols of the ancient temple. If time permits, we will visit Tabgha, site of the miracle of the loaves and fishes. There is a beautiful Byzantine mosaic in the floor commemorating this miracle.

Day 9: Sunday, November 3, 2024

Chorazin - Tel Dan - Banias - Golan - Mt. Bental

This morning we will travel north to visit Chorazin, a site dating back to the Savior’s Day with a black basalt Synagogue that looks similar to the one in Capernaum of the first century. We will visit Tel Dan National Park, which combines a lush nature reserve with a biblical archaeological experience. Beside a massive rock cliff, a place of great natural beauty, Banias is the site of ancient Caesarea Philippi, where Peter bore testimony of the Savior and Jesus said, “Thou art Peter and upon this rock, I will build my church”. As we make our way back south towards the Sea of Galilee you will observe some of the rich farmland that has made Israel one of the leading agriculture leaders of the world. On the Golan Heights we will stop at Mount Bental to not only admire the view but to orient ourselves to the geography and history of the area. As we make our way back south towards the Sea of Galilee you will observe some of the rich farmland that has made Israel one of the leading agriculture leaders of the world.

Day 10: Monday, November 4, 2024

Mt Tabor - Beit Shean

Mount Tabor is traditionally known as the site of the transfiguration of the Savior, it is also the site where the ancient First Presidency received their endowment. You will enjoy the “thrill-ride” as you take the taxi ride up the mountain, but once at the summit, you will feel the peace and calm of the surrounding valley. We then travel to the ancient tel of Bet She'an, where 6,000 years of civilization seem to unfold among the ruins. It is believed to be the very Bet She'an of the Old Testament where the former King of Israel, Saul, was fastened to the city wall without his head by the conquering Philistines.

Day 11: Tuesday, November 5, 2024

Bethabara - Qumran - Masada - Dead Sea - Jerusalem

Early this morning we leave the fertile valleys of the Galilee, and we follow the Jordan River Valley south to near Jericho where we will visit Bethabara the site where the Savior was baptized by John the Baptist. We then enter the strange and barren desert of the Dead Sea. Once the Biblical Lands of Moab and Edom, the Dead Sea basin has been a refuge to prophets, zealots and outcasts throughout time. Buried in the beige limestone bluffs, the ruins of Qumran still tell the story of the Essenes, a reclusive Jewish sect that buried the now famous Dead Sea Scrolls. Further south lays Ein Gedi, the oasis where David hid from King Saul. From the desert floor, ascend by cable car to the spectacular cliff-top fortress of Masada, where a community of 960 Jews preferred death at their own hands to the indignity of surrender to the overwhelming Roman forces. While at the Dead Sea, you cannot miss the opportunity to enjoy a dip in the buoyant waters and bathe in the wonderful medicinal mud at Kalia Beach! Even Cleopatra sent her slaves to retrieve this magical mud in order to preserve her legendary beauty. This evening, we will journey to the beloved city of Jerusalem.

Day 12: Wednesday, November 6, 2024

Temple Mount - Israel Museum - Hezekiah’s Tunnel

We will begin our day to a visit to the Temple Mount, one of the most sacred spots to three religions. This was the site of Solomon’s Temple then the massive Second Temple rebuilt by Herod. We will also visit the archeological park located on the south side of the temple mount. The original steps located here were certainly walked on by the Savior himself many times. After Lunch we will discover the treasures of the Israel Museum and the Shrine of the Book, the site chosen to house the Dead Sea Scrolls. This unique building is shaped like the ancient pottery in which the precious scrolls lay hidden for thousands of years. While we are there, we will get to see the Holy Land Model, a unique scale model of Jerusalem at the time of Christ. The model visually explains the layout of the ancient city as well as the design and magnitude of the Second Temple. We end our day with an optional tour of the Ancient city of David and a walk-through Hezekiah’s Tunnel. One of the highlights of our trip.

Day 13: Thursday, November 7, 2024

Western Wall Tunnels-Dome of the Rock - Old Jerusalem

We will begin our day with a tour of the tunnels beneath the Western Wall. The Western Wall is the most important site in all of Jewish civilization because these rough massive stones are all that is left of the great Second Temple. Revered and honored, the Jews wait and hope for the day they will rebuild their third and final temple upon these sacred remnants. Today at the Western Wall we will see Jewish families rejoicing in the Bar Mitzvah celebration of their youth Above the wall is Mount Moriah where the Islamic shrine, the Dome of the Rock, is located. Entering the oldest quarter of Jerusalem, follow the winding alleys and crowded streets to the Pools of Bethesda and learn about their importance. We will discover the ancient city beneath the modern streets where the old paving stones are carved with Roman games at Antonia Fortress. We will visit today Hezekiah’s “Broad Wall” of ancient Jerusalem that was near to where Lehi and his family lived. We will also walk in the old quarter of Jerusalem to the site believed to be the Room of the Last Supper. Devoid of gilded statues or ornate chapels, the quiet simplicity and elegance of this room helps one to focus on the words of Christ and the poignant last moments with his beloved disciples. Our last stop will be at the House of Caiaphas, which owns the dark and sad dungeon that once imprisoned the Savior. To experience the cold dismal cells and feel the sorrow and grieving of such a place, brings understanding and gratitude to our hearts.

Day 14: Friday, November 8, 2024

Mount of Olives Herodian - Bethlehem - Church of the Nativity - Shepherd Field

This morning we will visit Mount of Olives with a panoramic view that is breathtaking. On the mount we visit the Pater Nester Church and discuss the sacred information Jesus shared with his disciples after his resurrection. Then we travel south toward Bethlehem we will see the Herodian, built by Herod the Great as a fortress and palace as well his burial place. Music, bells, and churches appropriately adorn the little town of Bethlehem for it was here that the Light of the World was given life. Pilgrimages, sacred holidays, and festivities occur all year long to celebrate the birth of Christ. Tradition holds that the small humble inn with just a stable for lodging was located where the Church of the Nativity now stands. Near sunset we will gather on the Shepherd Field where Shepherds still tend their flocks on the fields overlooking Bethlehem just as they did over 2,000 years ago when the angel appeared bringing them glad tidings of great joy. We will sing the beloved Christmas hymns and listen to the wondrous story - a moment not to be forgotten.

Day 15: Saturday, November 9, 2024

BYU Jerusalem Center - Gethsemane - Garden Tomb

We will enjoy visiting the grounds of the BYU Jerusalem Center followed by Sacrament meeting. After lunch we will visit the Garden of Gethsemane. Here we’ll talk about and have some private time to contemplate the amazing sacrifice that was made for each of us. Afterwards we will visit the Orson Hyde Memorial Garden, for another view of the Old City and a review of some of the interesting LDS history related to this land. Our day will conclude by visiting the Garden Tomb.  Here we will see Golgotha, to talk about the Savior’s crucifixion, and then the tomb, where the body of Christ was interred and from which He arose on that Easter Sunday so long ago.

Tonight, we will have a farewell dinner together then head to the airport for your flight back to Salt Lake City or continue onto Egypt.

Everyone loves to sail on the Sea of Galilee. Today we truly sail where Jesus walked.

Everyone loves to sail on the Sea of Galilee. Today we truly sail where Jesus walked.

May 7 – Day 8 – Thursday – In first light we sail today where Jesus walked on the Sea of Galilee. We stop by the Boat Museum , to see a boat that was discovered from the time of Jesus. We next visit the newly excavated ruins of Magdala where Mary Magdalene called home. Then it is on to the town where Peter lived and where Jesus ministered for three years, Capernaum. Here Christ performed so many miracles and taught in the synagogue. You can close your eyes and almost be in the scene at the healing of the daughter of Jairus. At St. Peter’s Primacy on the Galilee we remember both the miracle of the loaves and the fishes and also the resurrected Jesus preparing fish on the seashore for his hungry apostles. We will eat St. Peter’s fish today. Late this afternoon, we will go to the top of the Mt. Arbel , overlooking the Galilee for the best view in the region, a place so beautiful we made it the cover of one of our books. Stay again tonight at beautiful Ein Gev.

You will meet some amazing people at Nazareth Village who are dressed in first century garb and who talk to us about things in Jesus’ day. You’ll love this place.

May 8 – Day 9  – Friday – We are on to Nazareth today, first to Mt. Precipice overlooking the Jezreel Valley . When the people of Nazareth rejected the Savior, this is where they tried to kill him. Below is also the scene of the last battle of Armageddon and to the east Mt. Tabor, another candidate for the Mt of Transfiguration. Then it is on to one of our favorite stops, Nazareth Village where you see what Nazareth would have looked like in the time of Christ, including villagers and shepherds who are dressed up as in the period to enhance the scene.  We also partake of a 1st century meal here that you will love. Next, we go to Caesarea Maritima , which was once a grand Roman city with a beautiful aqueduct that is still standing. It is also the site of Paul’s trial before King Agrippa. Tonight we visit Jerusalem’s Western Wall and see how the Jews celebrate Shabbat. We stay tonight (and for the next four nights) in Jerusalem. Stay at the Olive Tree Hotel.

We even visit a cave in Bethlehem's hills--a cave that has been used as a fold for animals. Here you will get the sense of how it really was at the birth of Jesus.

May 9 – Day 10 – Saturday –Shabbat Shalom. Today we attend sacrament meeting at the unforgettable BYU Jerusalem Center . We will arrive early to see the magnificent views from the center. Following this, we will head to a wonderful lunch in Bethlehem’s Tent Restaurant . Then we see Shepherd’s Fields , where we celebrate Christmas once again. Next we visit the Church of the Nativity , which has been standing since 330 AD over a cave where many believe Christ was born. Tonight, when Shabbat is over, we visit Jimmy’s Olive wood shop to look for beautiful treasures. Stay at the Olive Tree Hotel.

You will see a model of Jerusalem at the time of Christ. We will study this together and get you oriented to this holy city.

May 10 – Day 11 – Sunday – Arise early because we are going to the Temple Mount , a sacred place to Jews, Muslims and Christians, a place some believe is the very origin of creation. We will see the Dome of the Rock, Al Aqsa mosque and more. Then we go to the Pool of Bethesda, where Christ healed a paralytic man and to St. Anne’s Church where the acoustics make us all sound like angels when we sing. We will stop at Pilate’s Judgment Hall, Chapel of Flagellation and show you where Antonia’s Fortress was that housed the Roman soldiers who scourged Christ. We then follow the Via Dolorosa (the way of the Cross) to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre , the site believed by many Christians to be where Christ was crucified and resurrected. This afternoon we visit Yad Vashem, the vivid Holocaust museum, followed by a visit to the Dead Sea Scrolls Museum, and the Second Temple Model of Jerusalem. This gives you a picture of what Jerusalem once looked like and helps you understand today’s layout. Olive Tree Hotel.

Our tour participants in 2016 actually found 4 ancient coins in our sifting together. This was so exciting!

May 11 – Day 12 –Monday – Antiquities Day! This is a favorite since you will do things you would otherwise never get to do. We begin on Mt. Scopus , just below the BYU Jerusalem Center, working with archaeologists to sift some layers of material that came from the Temple Mount looking for shards, pottery, coins etc. You will feel like an explorer and a treasure hunter all at once. Many of our tour participants have found amazing things over the years.  Next we go to the City of David , the most ancient area of Jerusalem. We will walk through Hezekiah’s tunnel, an amazing adventure, one of the most outstanding engineering feats of the ancient world. Then we head to the Archaeological Park that is part of the temple complex where you will learn about the temple Jesus knew and walked on the very steps he walked on that once led into the temple. Finally, Joseph Zanbil , an antiquities dealer will teach us about the antiquities of Israel—how he has found them and what they are. This afternoon you’ll have free time to explore the Old City on your own. Stay again at the Olive Tree Hotel.

A visit to the Garden Tomb is a highlight of the trip. This is why you came to the Holy Land.

A visit to the Garden Tomb is a highlight of the trip. This is why you came to the Holy Land.

May 12 – Day 13 –Tuesday – Our last day in the Holy Land is the highlight of the tour. We start at the top of the Mt. of Olives and then walk down the route Jesus may have come on his last week. We have a special meeting in the Garden of Gethsemane and see olive trees that are at least a thousand years old. Then we visit the Orson Hyde gardens and talk about the dedication of Israel for the gathering of the Jews. Next, we visit the Upper Room , believed to have been built on the site of the Last Supper, then move to the Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu , built on Caiaphas’s palace where Jesus was tried. Our tour is capped with a visit to the Garden Tomb where we will remember that “He is not here for he has risen.” Here will have a final testimony meeting. We end with a feast together and go on to the airport.

May 13 – Day 14 – Wednesday  – Trans-Atlantic flight and arrive home.

The cost of the Holy Land portion of the trip is $2,859.

Holy Protection Monastery, home of St. Matrona’s relics, celebrates 25th anniversary of resumed monastic life

Moscow, October 15, 2019

Photo: monasterium.ru

Holy Protection Monastery in Moscow is the biggest center of pilgrimage in the city, and one of the most important in the entire Russian Church. Hundreds and thousands flock to the monastery every day to venerate the precious relics of St. Matrona of Moscow, considered the “8th Pillar” of Russia.

Yesterday, the convent celebrated its patronal feast, which this year doubled as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of its reestablishment after the fall of the Soviet Union.

The feast began the evening before with the celebration of the All-Night Vigil by His Grace Bishop Dionysius of Voskresensky, during which the Akathist to the Protection of the Mother of God was read.

Photo: monasterium.ru

The Divine Liturgy in the morning was celebrated by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill together with 19 other hierarchs of the Russian Church and a number of priests and deacons, reports the monastery website .

Photo: monasterium.ru

The monastery was opened by decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Church on November 24, 1994.

Photo: monasterium.ru

Upon arrival at the holy monastery, the Patriarch first venerated the holy relics of St. Matrona and then celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Church of the Holy Protection.

Photo: monasterium.ru

Special prayers were read for the unity of the Orthodox Church and the preservation of the Church from divisions and schisms, as well as a prayer for peace in Ukraine. Pat. Kirill also ordained a Moscow deacon to the priesthood during the Liturgy.

Photo: monasterium.ru

Following the Liturgy, the glorification of the Mother of God was celebrated, then Abbess Theophania greed Pat. Kirill and presented him with an icon of the Protection of the Mother of God.

His Holiness addressed the gathered faithful with a primatial word and presented the monastery with a set of veils for the chalice and diskos for feasts of the Mother of God.

Photo: monasterium.ru

Holy Protection Monastery was founded as a men’s monastery in 1635 by Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich in memory of his father, Patriarch Philaret, who reposed on the feast of the Protection. The stone cathedral was initially built in 1655 and rebuilt in 1806-1814. The Church of the Resurrection and a bell tower were built in the 18th century.

The monastery was severely damaged during the War of 1812, and the Church of the Resurrection was rebuilt and consecrated in 1855.

The monastery took on a missionary focus under the reign of Metropolitan St. Innocent in the late 19th century, training several dozen monastic missionaries.

The churches of the monastery were closed in 1926, and the monastery itself in 1929. In the ensuing decades, the monastery housed a park, a printing house, a magazine editorial office, a sports hall, a billiard room, a film studio, and a cinema department.

The monastery was returned to the Church in 1994 and reopened as a convent on November 24, 1994. Abbess Theophania, previously a nun of the famous Diveyevo Monastery, was appointed abbess on February 22, 1995. The first Liturgy was served within the half-ruined walls of the monastery in October 1995. There were 5 nuns in addition to Mother Theophania at that time.

Three altars in the Holy Protection Church were consecrated on April 4, 1998. The relics of St. Matrona were transferred to the monastery on May 1, 1998, and she was glorified as a locally-venerated saint the next day. She was approved for Churchwide veneration in 2004.

Since then, several other churches have been consecrated, as well as the rebuilt bell tower and holy spring. The monastery today has more than 50 nuns.
