History of Chilika Lake

According to the Chilika development authority : it is believed that the pirate King Raktabahhu came to ransack Puri with a huge fleet of ships.

He anchored out of sight to avoid detection, but the sea washed up refuse from the ships on shore and warned the townspeople, who fled with all their possessions.

Raktabahu thus found a deserted city when he finally arrived. Furious, he insisted that the sea had betrayed him and ordered his army to attack it.

The sea entered the seabed in pursuit. Then it surged back, drowning the army and forming what is now Chilika Lagoon.

Many ancient texts mention the southern sector of Chilika as being a major harbor for maritime commerce, back in the days when the King of Kalinga was known as the Lord of the Sea.

Indeed, some rocks in the Southern sector are marked by a band of white formed by the remains of coral (which are exclusively marine).

This band is at a height of 8m above the current water level, a clear indication that the area was once marine, and the water much deeper than it is today.

Not only was the experience incredible since we travelled by car with our own driver, Mr Binabi Vinay Kumar, which allowed us to see this part of India so closely, but also gave us the opportunity to stop and have lunch at the small restaurants along the road and savor the habits of its people. Rajasthan is a beautiful region of the country. It has so many different landscapes to appreciate and in each city or town we visited we had our own local English speaking guides who were highly qualified not only on the cultural and historical aspects of the sites and monuments but each one gave us many insights to the cultural life that we otherwise wouldn't ever have known. The most beautiful experience, however, was The Taj Mahal in Agra. We saw it at sunrise when the first rays hit this amazing masterpiece of human craftsmanship. The tour lasted for 24 days starting in Delhi then in Rajasthan finishing in Agra. Booked an 11 day tour (Hubbali, Hampi, Badami, Aihole, SolaPur aurangabad) I contacted Sashi at Agora and he basically took care of everything. I presented him with my dates and a rough plan of what I wanted to do, Sashi then put together an itinerary. The cost was really reasonable for 2 people. And during the booking stage I had to make several changes due to some changes in dates, Sashi accommodated and amended everything accordingly with no issues. Payment was done via a bank transfer which was simple. On the first day, our driver Raju bhai came to pick us up and was with us throughout the trip. He was absolutely exceptional. A calm, reliable and completely trust worthy driver who went above an beyond many times. There was always water in the car and he was incredibly knowledgeable, making some of the long drives really interesting. All the guides we had were really knowledgeable, explained everything really well. More so they were local guides who spoke good English and had a lot of insight into a lot of the archaeological sites we visited. All the hotels we stayed in were beautiful, clean and safe. Overall I would recommend Agora to anyone. The service was exceptional and as a result we had the most amazing trip. Often India is described as an unsafe place to travel m, particularly for two women, but we felt incredibly safe. Will definitely use Agora again in the future. Read more Written February 7, 2024

History of Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake has a long and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to some legends, Chilika Lake was created by Lord Vishnu as a refuge for Goddess Lakshmi, who was being chased by a demon. According to some others, Chilika Lake was formed by the tears of Goddess Parvati, who was mourning the death of her son Ganesha. Whatever the origin, Chilika Lake has been a source of life and livelihood for many generations of people living around it.

Chilika Lake was also a hub of maritime trade and commerce in the past, as it was connected to the Bay of Bengal by several channels. It was frequented by merchants and travelers from different parts of the world, such as Greece, Rome, China, Southeast Asia, and Arabia. Chilika Lake also played a role in the colonial history of India, as it was occupied by the British, the French, and the Marathas at different times. Chilika Lake also witnessed some of the freedom struggles and movements that led to India’s independence from British rule.

In 1981, Chilika Lake was designated as a Ramsar site, meaning a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. In 2002, Chilika Lake was also inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Konark Sun Temple and other monuments in Odisha. These recognitions have helped to conserve and protect Chilika Lake from various threats and challenges.

Ecology of Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake is a biodiversity hotspot that hosts more than 1000 species of plants and animals. It is especially famous for its avian diversity, as it attracts millions of migratory birds every year from places like Siberia, Central Asia, Europe, and Africa. Some of the common bird species that can be seen in Chilika Lake are flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, egrets, ducks, geese, cranes, ibises, spoonbills, gulls, terns, plovers, sandpipers, and many more. Chilika Lake is also home to some rare and endangered bird species such as the black-necked stork, the lesser flamingo, and the white-bellied sea eagle.

Chilika Lake is also known for its aquatic diversity, as it harbors more than 200 species of fish and crustaceans. It is one of the few places in India where you can see dolphins in their natural habitat. The Irrawaddy dolphin is the most famous resident of Chilika Lake, as it is one of only two lagoons in the world where this species can be found. The Irrawaddy dolphin is an endangered species that has a distinctive blunt head and a flexible neck. It can be seen swimming and jumping in the waters of Chilika Lake along with other dolphin species such as bottlenose dolphins and finless porpoises.

Chilika Lake is also home to some other rare and endangered aquatic species such as the olive ridley turtle, which comes to the nearby beaches to lay eggs every year. The olive ridley turtle is one of the smallest sea turtles in the world and has an olive-green shell. It is also one of the most threatened sea turtles due to poaching, fishing, and habitat loss. Chilika Lake also supports some other marine animals such as crabs, prawns, oysters, mussels, clams, and seaweeds.

However, Chilika Lake is also facing some serious ecological threats and challenges that need to be addressed urgently. To overcome these challenges, various conservation and restoration efforts have been undertaken by the government, NGOs, and local communities. Some of these are dredging the channels to improve the water flow, removing the invasive plants to increase the oxygen level, regulating the fishing activities to ensure sustainability, monitoring the dolphin population to ensure their protection, educating the public to raise awareness and participation, and promoting eco-tourism to generate income and incentives for conservation.

  • 210domenicam 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable experience of India Agora Voyages offered us the exact kind of tour that I had required. My husband and I would highly recommend Agora Voyages not only for its careful attention to details but also to its constant interest in the welfare and conforts of his clients.

Chilika Lake is spread over Khurda, Ganjam and Puri districts of Odisha (formerly Orissa). Balugaon and Rambha are two major towns serving as entry points for the lake. It is Asia's largest salt-water lagoon and is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a sandy ridge. The pear-shaped lake spreads across 1,100 km 2 , and has a unique ecosystem with a range of aquatic flora and fauna found in and around its brackish waters. An impressive array of bird life, both native and migrant, makes Chilika one of the best places in India for bird-watching, splashing around in the water and quiet relaxation.

Chilika Lake is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Chilika Lake is an important habitat and breeding ground for both resident and migratory and aquatic birds, most notably flamingos. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. Migratory birds arrive in October from as far away as Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Himalayas and generally stay until March. Part of the lake is protected by the Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary, which harbors over 150 migratory and resident species of birds. The Nalaban Island within the lagoon is classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. The lake is also home to a diverse range of aquatic life, including 225 species of fish and the Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella Brevirostris). The rare limbless lizard barkudia insularis is endemic to one of the lake's small islands.

The larger islands lie between the sandbar and the lake, separated by shallow channels, and include Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara. Some of the smaller islands are Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, Beacon Island, etc.

By road [ edit ]

A part of Chilika Lake is visible from NH5 and the Howrah-Chennai train track. Many buses ply from Bhubaneswar (Baramunda Bus Station) and Cuttack (Badambadi Bus Station) to Balugaon throughout the day, OSRTC buses (i.e. state-run buses) being the best ones. The journey takes 2 hours and costs less than ₹100 one way. From there, one has to hire a taxi or an auto-ricksaw to reach Barkul or Rambha (In case of Rambha, passengers can alight at Keshpur, which is further ahead from Balugaon, and from there hire an auto-rickshaw). Satapada is well connected by daily local buses from Puri. Visitors can take an OTDC day tour from Puri to see Satapada (~₹400; 3-hr boat ride and AC transport included). However, Satapada is not so well connected from Bhubaneswar and taxis have to be hired to get there.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available. The services of local boatmen and the motorboats of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation are available for access to the islands though outboard motors are not allowed near the bird sanctuary. OTDC boats can be hired at Barkul and Rambha, and cost between ₹410 (for a 7-seater boat) to ₹790 (for a 34-seater boat) per hour. A special tour is operated by the OTDC between Barkul and Kalijai, and costs ₹40 per head. However you can find private machine operated boats for the tours, but you have to bargain a bit to get a fair deal.

A boat journey from Rambha to Satapada takes about 2½ hours.

More information on Chilika can be obtained from the Government of Odisha Tourism Counter at the Tourist Bungalow in Rambha (District Ganjam) Odisha, +91 6810 278346.

Is very close from Barkul. Flocks of peacocks roam here, mingling with the devotees. Legends say that 200-300 years ago a girl named Kali drowned, near the present Kalijai Temple, while returning to her maternal house from her husband's. A few years later her sister, Jai, came looking for Kali and came to the island. She died on the island(reasons unknown). Fishermen and other local folks used to hear cries of two girls at nights. But soon after the temple was built the cries stopped for good. Earlier fishermen used to visit the temple before venturing into the deep sea, but nowadays, it's just another tourist spot.
  • 19.91935 85.42595 4 Mangalajodi . A former poachers village which has become a community owned wildlife venture. The community is supported by Mangalajodi Ecotourism.

Thanks Veena World once again and team for this tour Anil Ghotkar Jayashri Ghotkar

Veena World is right choice for those who want a smooth and easy trip. The trip was very well planned. Hotel service as well as the food were awesome. Especially when we got to taste the authentic cuisine of Odisha.I absolutely loved the exteriors of 'Toshali Resort'. About the Tour Managers( Prakash Patange & Jayesh Pawar) Being a single teenager on this trip I was afraid I would be alone but Prakash dada and Jayesh dada made sure that I was not. They were quite the entertainers.I am an architectural freak, whenever I had doubt they were always there. With the help of local guides I was able to understand the history and the purpose of the architectural designs which had really helped me in my studies.I was kind of bummed that we couldn't go to Puri beach due to heavy rains, but dadas rescheduled and made sure that we did not miss it. I am so glad to get the wonderful darshan of Shri Jagannathji and Shri Lingraj. We really enjoyed the indoor games, this activity helped me to connect with people in my group. Prakash dada and Jayesh dada have excellent management skills, they are so friendly and cooperative. Being my first trip with Veena World, I can't find any regrets, I worship your hospitality. Glad my parents chose 'Veena World'. Thanks & Regards Netra Tamore

Chilika Lake Puri Timings

Take some time out for Chilika Lake in Puri to enjoy an escapade in tranquility. Situated on the eastern coast of India, the Chilika Lake is the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia and the second-largest in the world. It spans an area of over 1,100 square km and its unique biodiversity and scenic beauty have earned it the status of a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

One of the most notable features of Chilika Lake is the presence of numerous islands within its waters. Some of the prominent islands include Nalabana Island, Kalijai Island, and Honeymoon Island.

The lake's surrounding wetlands and marshes are a crucial habitat for several endangered and rare species of wildlife including the Irrawaddy dolphins and the Olive Ridley Sea turtles. The presence of such diverse and unique biodiversity has led to the establishment of the Chilika Lake Wildlife Sanctuary to protect and conserve the delicate ecosystem.

For tourists and visitors, Chilika Lake offers a delightful experience. Boating and ferry services are available for exploring the lake and its islands, allowing visitors to witness the abundant avian life, pristine waters, and serene landscapes. The surrounding areas also boast rich cultural heritage, with nearby towns like Puri being famous for their ancient temples, vibrant markets, and religious festivals.

In conclusion, Chilika Lake in Puri, Odisha, is a treasure trove of biodiversity and a haven for nature lovers. Its vibrant ecosystem, diverse wildlife, and stunning landscapes make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a close encounter with nature's wonders.

Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary

The Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary is a haven for avian biodiversity and a prominent part of Chilika Lake's ecological landscape. It is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries in the country and an essential stopover for migratory birds during their winter sojourn.

The sanctuary is situated on Nalabana Island, which covers an area of about 15.59 square km and is a designated area within the vast expanse of Chilika Lake. During the monsoon season, the island gets submerged underwater, but as the waters recede, it becomes a lush and fertile habitat for a wide variety of bird species.

Every year, during the winter months, Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary becomes home to an incredible number of migratory birds that escape the harsh weather conditions of their breeding grounds in places as far as Siberia, Central Asia, and other parts of Europe and Asia. The primary attraction among these migratory visitors is the Greater Flamingo, whose vibrant pink plumage stands out against the backdrop of the serene blue waters.

Apart from the majestic flamingos, the sanctuary also welcomes numerous other bird species, including various types of storks, ducks, geese, sandpipers, pelicans, and herons, among others. The sight of these birds taking flight in massive flocks or gracefully wading through the waters is a breathtaking spectacle, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and photographers.

The Chilika Lake Bird Sanctuary is not just a visual treat; it also plays a crucial role in the conservation of these avian species. The sanctuary provides a safe and undisturbed environment for the birds to rest, feed, and breed. This is the perfect amount if you want to maximize your chances to see i.e. tigers and get to drive in different areas of the park. It is hard to describe and to understand how these caves were built, dated from the 2nd century BC, you just have to go and see for yourself! We would not hesitate to book again any tour in India through Agora Voyages. They were very professional, responding to emails quickly, giving advise and the payment system worked perfectly (can sometimes be a problem in India). • 210domenicam 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An unforgettable experience of India Agora Voyages offered us the exact kind of tour that I had required. My husband and I would highly recommend Agora Voyages not only for its careful attention to details but also to its constant interest in the welfare and conforts of his clients. Read more Written 7 February 2024

We extended it to 12 days by adding a few days off to allow us to acclimate and process our experiences. This worked out well, although we got tired on our last few days. They organized everything for us and that really, really well! We were picked up and brought to all important sights. They had good recommendations for clean restaurants and interesting stories on history as well as religion. We booked our hotels separately. We had a bad experience at our hotel in Bodhgaya. Our guide Chandan, which was sent from Agora Voyages, helped as getting the hotel refunded and getting us to the new hotel. We are grateful for that. Also our contact at Agora Voyages, Shashi was always ready to answer questions via WhatsApp. Our drivers were really good. Traffic in India is always special, but we felt safe and secure on the road of Kolkata as well as between Bodhgaya and Varanasi. All in all, we felt well taken care of and we trusted all people involved with our journey. Thank you Agora Voyages! Read more Written 31 January 2024

Informative post with beautiful photos 👍 Thanks for sharing 🙂

Near rustic areas and a beautiful lake. I'd like to hear more about this resort. :)

Beautiful place. Nice to read about the resort.

Lovely post, Apa :) I have had a special connection with chitta jhotis since childhood. As a child, I used to see mummy drawing chitta patterns early in the morning before Sudasha Brata or during Manabasa gurubaars and I used to be mesmerised by her designs. However, at times, it used to get difficult for her to manage everything all alone, especially during Manabasa Gurubaars when she also had to prepare so many pithas for the 3 time bhoga. Gradually I took over the task of drawing jhoti chittas from her, so as to lend a helping hand and that habit has continued to this day. So whenever I am at home and it's some puja, the task of drawing chittas is invariably mine :D I absolutely enjoy drawing chittas.

Your words mean a lot to me.
