There are many fun things to do in Beaumont Texas but a visit to McFaddin-Ward House is the best.

Beaumont Botanical Gardens

Originally started in the 1950s by a local garden club, Beaumont Botanical Gardens is one of the best Beaumont attractions to explore.

This 23-acre of garden collection is a great place for a morning/evening stroll and to admire the themed gardens, water features, and more. You will find paved paths throughout the park which is perfect for moving wheelchairs and strollers.

Apart from the walk, you can visit the Horticulture Center here that keeps botanical art, and Warren Loose Conservatory that houses rainforest plants.

But taking a stroll here with your partner is one of the most romantic things to do in Beaumont.

Edison Museum

Edison Museum is one of the top Beaumont attractions to visit for science enthusiasts or Thomas Edison fans.

Dedicated to Edison, this museum displays objects related to this famous inventor. There are over 60 historical items in the interactive exhibits here. Apart from that, the museum features over 1400 artifacts and an expanding reference library.

This is a small museum with an area of 1,100 square feet so it can accommodate only 40 people at a time. The only museum of its kind in this region, it is one of the best things to do in Beaumont.

Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour of this museum. Moreover, it is located close to other Beaumont attractions so, it is a good place to add to your trip.

Taylor Bayou

Are you looking for unique things to do around Beaumont? Then, you cannot miss out on a swamp tour through Taylor Bayou near the city.

Formed by the meeting of North Fork and South Fork, Taylor Bayou is an important landmark in Beaumont. A tour of this bayou will bring you close to the wildlife that calls it home.

These swamp tours are generally small and private where you will discuss the ecological aspects of this bayou and why is it important. Learn about the species that live here and if you are lucky, you might see them too.

John Jay French Museum

John Jay French, a pioneer, built this home and stayed here with his family in the mid-1800s. Visitors can take a stroll through this museum and see the fine furnishings, households goods, and clothing used by the upper-middle class during that time.

This museum hosts several events throughout the year that you can attend. Christmas candlelight tour is a must-attend activity at this museum.

Gator Country Adventure Park

Watching alligators in Gator Country Adventure Park is one of the most fun things to do in Beaumont with kids.

Home to over 600 alligators, this is the largest alligator adventure park in South Texas. It is also an alligator sanctuary where the rescued alligators and crocodiles live safely. The park hosts regular shows to educate the visitors about Texas gators’ lifestyles and feeding habits.

You can also feed the alligators and meet the two main alligators of Gator Country. You will meet Big Al, the oldest alligator in Texas, and Big Tex, the largest alligator in captivity.

Marvel at the Architecture

If the words “art deco” or “Richardsonian-Romanesque” mean anything to you, then you’ll be delighted by Beaumont’s rich architecture. Many of Beaumont’s most photogenic buildings are located throughout the town’s commercial district. One of the best examples of this is the St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, a stunning red-brick church modeled after St. Paul’s Basilica in Rome. The pointed towers and long rectangular windows of the Tyrrell Historical Library, located in a former Baptist church built in 1903 in the Richardsonian-Romanesque style out of limestone, offers an intriguing counterpoint to St. Anthony’s. Beaumont’s Jefferson County Courthouse and the First National Bank Building, on the other hand, are wonderful examples of the art deco style. For the most part, you can see all of these buildings from your car. But why would you want to? After all, it’s much easier to take pictures when you aren’t driving.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors

That’s all well and good, but what can you do here? For starters, there are more than 40 miles of hiking trails to explore the varied landscapes within the preserve. Since Big Thicket is so dense with plant and animal life, photography and bird watching are popular things to do here. Kayaking and paddling on Village Creek and the Neches River, fishing, hunting, and biking are good options as well. Big Thicket National Preserve is located about 35 miles north of Beaumont off of Highway 287. Admission is free and the preserve is open all year.

The Best Things To Do In Round Top, Texas, The South's Best Tiny Town

Home to the region’s most celebrated antique festival and arguably the state’s tastiest pie, this historic spot should be on your 2023 travel bucket list.

Any Texan worth their boots will tell you that bigger is better—and then proudly declare that the Lone Star State sits smack dab at the intersection of the two. Where else could you find a 100,000-square-foot honky tonk? Do a little exploring, though, and you’ll find that there are plenty of small towns around the state that seem to sprout up in contradiction, packing Texas-sized amounts of swagger into petite locales. Round Top is one of them.

Situated on the southeast crescent of the land of Bigger and Better, about halfway between Houston and Austin , the tiny town (population 90) makes a fine case for the old adage that good things come in small packages.

Incorporated in 1870 (just 25 years after Texas made the transition from independent country to a state), Round Top has carefully protected its history. The town’s historic buildings are so well preserved that it’s easy to convince yourself that the entire place is something of a fiction, like a perfectly curated theme park or movie set. But the historic structures in this one-square-mile town are 100% genuine, as real as the leather on those cowboy boots.

But even as these century-and-then-some-old buildings offer a step back in time, Round Top brims with forward-thinking entrepreneurs, hoteliers, and restaurateurs, who aim to hold on to its tiny-town charms while welcoming outsiders to discover its Hill Country magic. Here’s how to pass the time while you’re in Round Top, Texas—the South’s Best Tiny Town for 2023.

If you’re treasure hunting for a one-of-a-kind pair of Bergere chairs or vintage antler mounts, there’s no better time to visit Round Top than during the triannual antiques palooza, The Original Round Top Antiques Fair , which happens winter, spring, and fall. Twice a year (spring and fall), the town’s signature event coincides with Marburger Farm Antiques Show , the fancy-pants, highly curated answer to the dust-on-your-boots, romp-through-the-pasture scavenger hunt that you’ll experience in the tents popped up in the expansive fields along State 237.

Of course, you can visit the town year-round, as many of its restaurants and shops stay open regardless of the antiquing calendar. For those hoping for an especially warm-fuzzy small town experience, there’s no better time to visit than over the Fourth of July, when the town hosts the longest continuously running Independence Day parade west of the Mississippi.

Rancho Pillow Motel

Given Rancho Pillow Motel's folksy-cosmic-cool environs, you may forget for a moment that you're not in nearby Austin. Anchored by an 18th-century, three-story Dutch barn moved from New York, this 20-acre compound outside of town spills over with color and personality. But unlike some of the manufactured eccentricity you may find within bigger city limits, this is the real deal, a Texas Hill Country fever dream conceptualized by owner and designer Sheila Youngblood. Stay in one of five on-site abodes, from a two-bedroom “casita” to an air-conditioned, hand-painted, sheetrocked teepee.

Nowhere do Round Top’s mindful commitments to honoring the past and welcoming the future mingle more beautifully than at Hotel Lulu in the heart of town. Comprising six restored historic bungalows (which together hold 14 guest rooms), the boutique stay is a celebration of design-minded hospitality with an on-site restaurant and bar, a formal garden and herb garden, and a pool.

The Frenchie Boutique Hotel

Just a short walk from downtown Round Top, this light and airy stay is outfitted with girls’ trips in mind. Bunk in with friends in fabulously appointed rooms and suites that sleep up to four comfortably, or snag a bitty bungalow for yourself. The Frenchie's amenities are thoughtful and luxurious: Moccamaster coffee makers and deep soaking tubs in many of the rooms, aqua-and-white scalloped umbrellas around the pool, and fire pits that encourage stargazing on chilly nights.

Royers Round Top Café

This beloved, family-owned institution is a popular spot year-round, dishing “great steak” and Gulf snapper Wednesday through Sunday. But during the weeks of the Original Round Top Antiques Fair, a reservation at Royers Round Top Café is coveted as much as a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture—maybe more. Call early and often to snag one. And once you’ve scored that hallowed table, reward yourself with dessert first. This is the home of Texas Trash Pie , a chocolate-y, caramel-y concoction studded with chocolate chips, pretzel pieces, and coconut. Don’t skip the added scoop of Blue Bell vanilla ice cream (from just down the road in Brenham).

Prost on Block 29

The town’s most historic building is also home to a cozy wine bar and shop . Nibble on a tasty charcuterie and cheese board inside the stone cottage or sip something from their globally-sourced wine list on the patio.

For an Italian dinner in utterly transportive surrounds, don’t miss Lulu's, the on-property restaurant at Hotel Lulu . And given that the kitchen is helmed by Jose Monterossa, schooled in cooking by both his grandmother and a Michelin-star winner, it’s obvious why the dishes, which range from cacio e pepe to grilled branzino, will transport you too. After dinner, stop in at the hotel’s whimsically muraled bar, Il Cuculo, for a nightcap.

What’s a trip to this part of the world without a little Tex-Mex? Plop into a booth at this colorful joint for chips with guacamole and chili con queso and a frozen ‘rita.

Ellis Motel

Contrary to the name, this isn’t a place to rest your head. Head to the restored 1840s property instead for a stiff drink in a comfortable, laid-back environment that feels like a handsomely decorated ranch house. Ellis Motel's smart design isn’t just a ploy to get you to settle in and stay a while (though it has that effect too): The art and furniture here are for sale.

Brave "The Fields"

If you’ve coordinated your trip with The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, carve out a day to scavenge the tents that blanket the pastures along State 237 for cheap thrills; there are plenty of metaphorical diamonds to be found in this rough. Fair warning: The fields are hot, dusty, and the best finds will require a sharp eye and serious stamina.

Experience a Days-Long Antiquing Marathon

Throughout the course of the antiques festival, there are nearly 100 independently owned and operated venues where you can score covetable antiques, funky vintage finds, and one-of-a-kind pieces. Here are just a handful of stops to add to the list: the Big Red Barn, Blue Hills, Punkie’s Place, Excess 1 and 2, The Compound, Bader Ranch at Round Top European Antiques, and Market Hill.

Shop the Open-Year-Round Spots

While shopping options increase exponentially during show times, several spots are open all year long. Discover hand-selected textiles, furnishings, and accessories at Courtney Barton , an eponymous shop from the Houston designer. Peruse 6,000-square-feet of antiques carefully selected by a dozen different dealers at Round Top Antiques and Design Center . Tucked in a 1920s farmhouse, you’re sure to find a true Texas souvenir among Townsend Provisions’ collection of home goods and vintage cowboy boots.

Visit the Round Top Festival Institute

Lest you think that the antiques community has the monopoly on culture in this town, think again. Founded more than 50 years ago, the Round Top Festival Institute is home to an internationally respected music performance and education center and hosts public concerts and events throughout the year. But even if there’s no show on the books while you’re in town, the 210-acre campus is still worth a visit, as its grounds hold several gardens, lakes, and walking trails.

Located in Southeast Texas, you’ll find so many fun things to do in Beaumont, TX that you’ll keep coming back again and again. As the largest city in the region, there’s plenty here to keep you busy.

While the outdoors may not come to mind first, this is a birding mecca and very close to Big Thicket National Preserve. Not to mention the nearby botanical gardens and it’s only an hour from the beach.

But no matter if you’re trying to escape the Texas heat indoors or looking for outdoor adventure, you can find it here in Beaumont.

I visited in early June and loved exploring for the weekend! There were so many fun festivals and events happening.

So here are 15 fun things to do in Beaumont, TX based on my recent trip!

15 Fun Things to Do in Beaumont, TX

Go bird watching at cattail marsh wetlands.

Cattail Marsh Wetlands is actually part of the city’s wastewater treatment facility. How cool is that?

They took something that’s normally gross to think about and turned it into something beautiful. Come at sunrise or sunset for the best chance to see wildlife.

It’s very popular with people who go birding and you can see gators here as well. The Cattail Marsh Wetlands Education Center is popular with kids and they even have weekly free yoga here.

For the hikers, you’ll find miles of trails throughout the wetlands area with tons of different loop options to choose from.

The best part about Cattail Marsh? It’s only about 10 – 15 minutes outside of town so you can feel like you’re far away from society without having to make a long drive.

Kayaking With Big Thicket Outfitters

If I could recommend one fun thing to do near Beaumont it would be this. Kayaking with Big Thicket Outfitters was such an amazing experience!

Big Thicket Outfitters took care of the kayak, paddle, and PFD so all I needed to bring was water, snacks, and sunscreen/bug spray. Make sure you have good kayaking shoes and some people like to have a hat too.

The trip took about two hours in total and we paddled through the Neches River, a bayou, and a cypress-tupelo slough.

My guide, Gerald, was so knowledgeable about the area and was a wonderful resource for any questions I had about the plants and wildlife that we saw.

Definitely book this tour in advance before your trip to Beaumont! I think it should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Hunt for Murals

Beaumont had its first ever mural festival in March of 2022 and they plan to make this an annual event. This event took place over four days where you could watch the artists create their murals, speak with them, plus hear live music and attend a block party.

This means there are tons of fun murals to check out around the city! A large concentration of them are downtown but you can also find some along Calder Avenue.

If you want to get a photo for Instagram then try going early in the morning or later in the evening when the light is best.

Fannin Street is a great place to see multiple murals as is the Pour09 Rooftop Bar. I loved the one outside the Civic Center as well.

If you love murals, then you should plan a trip to Hattiesburg, MS ! They have over 30 murals on their Public Art Trail.

Hike in Big Thicket National Preserve

If you aren’t interested in kayaking in the Big Thicket then hiking here is the next best thing. There are tons of trails in this area.

I highly recommend stopping by the Visitor Center for trail recommendations and current info on the surrounding area.

Take the Sundew Trail to see and learn about this unique carnivorous plant. Take a look at the signs at the beginning of the hike so you know what to look for – they can be easily missed.

The 0.3-mile inner loop here is part boardwalk and part paved trail so very accessible for everyone. Add on the outer loop if you want to walk through the longleaf pines.

The Kirby Nature Trail, close to the Visitor Center, is a great introductory hike to the park. You’ll see a wide variety of trees and plants plus go by Village Creek.

Definitely add on the small loop here where you can see the Cypress trees. The inner loop is 1.5-miles but with minimal elevation gain, it’s very easy and doesn’t take long.

Finally, check out the Pitcher Plant Trail for another amazing carnivorous plant. Fun fact – four of the five carnivorous plants in North America can be found in Big Thicket.

It’s another short loop trail but you can see tons of the pitcher plants as soon as you walk out on the boardwalk at the beginning of the trail.

Just a note – if you’re traveling solo this is a pretty remote area so be aware of your surroundings and at least have some pepper spray with you.

Try to get out in the early morning before it gets hot, but if you’re out in the afternoon then make sure you know what to wear when hiking in summer .

If you love the outdoors then the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge and Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge are beautiful. They’re some of the best things to do near Alvin, TX .

While not in Texas, Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge was one of my favorite things to do in Starkville, MS.

Check Out the Largest Working Fire Hydrant in the World

Now this is a cool thing to see while you’re in downtown Beaumont. Painted in that iconic Dalmatian pattern, this enormous landmark is the World’s Largest Working Fire Hydrant.

It’s located right in front of the Fire Museum of Texas and is a great photo opp. The museum has antique fire engines and all kinds of firefighting equipment – it’s a popular stop for kids.

Visit Gator Country

Gator Country Adventure Park is the largest Alligator Sanctuary in Southeast Texas. It’s also home to Big Tex and Big Al – Big Tex is the largest alligator in captivity.

Most of the animals that come here have been either surrendered or rescued after a nuisance call. In addition to alligators, they have all kinds of other reptiles like snakes, lizards, and more.

When you first arrive you walk through the gift shop area where you purchase tickets and feed for the animals if you want to feed them.

There are free feeding shows daily and the times for those will be posted when you walk in. At these shows, you’ll get to watch the interns feed Big Tex and Big Al.

There is a restaurant on-site and the food looked pretty good though I didn’t try anything here. Just outside the restaurant walk-up window, there is a large bar with seating where you can sit, eat, and observe the alligators.

Another popular experience here is wading with the alligators. I walked around and had fun watching the kids feed the gators hot dogs.

If you get hot outside then you can head indoors where all of their smaller animals are kept. They have such a wide variety and with the Adventure Package you’re even allowed to hold some of the animals.

Pour Your Own Beer at Pour Brothers Brewery

I had never been to a “pour your own” style brewery and the ladies that work here were SO incredibly nice. I told them I had never been and they were more than willing to walk me through step by step.

It’s not a hard process, it’s just not obvious how you do it the first time. There are taps on the back wall and when you walk in you connect your credit card to a card that allows you to pour which beer you would like.

Once you have your beer, you can choose to sit inside or on their outdoor patio. They have a food truck that is typically there and do other fun events that bring in other food trucks.

The night that I visited they were having one of their Boomtown Night Markets with local vendors set up on both sides of the brewery. This is one of the best things to do in Beaumont if you want to connect with locals.

There were also some fun breweries in nearby Conroe, TX if you’re headed that way.

Bike Around Downtown

There are nifty little biking stations set up around downtown Beaumont where you can easily rent a bike for an hour or two.

This is a great way to see everything downtown and much better than walking if you visit during the heat of summer.

Of course, if you’re nervous on a bike then come out early in the morning and there won’t be as many people driving around plus it will be much cooler.

Make stops at some of the murals, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, or just admire the architecture of buildings like the Tyrrell Historical Library and Jefferson Theatre.

Make a Stop on the Southeast Texas Faith Trail

You’ll find seven different buildings in Beaumont that are worth a stop if you love religious history or architecture.

Downtown you can see the St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica – one of four in Texas – where guided tours are offered during parish office hours. You can also take a guided tour of Temple Emanuel.

Tyrell Historic Library was originally a Baptist church and it is free for the public to enter. The stained glass windows in the First United Methodist Church are a sight to see.

Other stops on the trail include St. Michael’s Antiochian Christian Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal, and Westminster Presbyterian.

The SETX Faith Trail is also one of the best things to do in Port Arthur, TX which is a quick 15 to 20 minute drive from Beaumont.

Stop in a Downtown Museum

I’ve already mentioned a few of the museums downtown but this is hard to beat since many of them are cheap or free!

The Firefighter’s Museum and Southeast Texas Art Museum are both free and the Texas Energy Museum is only $5 for adults.

All three of these are in walking distance or you can rent a bike like I mentioned before. Riding with the wind in your face is much cooler than walking.

Take a Seat in the Beaumont Botanical Gardens

One thing that surprised me was how many botanical gardens were in Beaumont or a short drive away.

The Beaumont Botanical Gardens in Tyrrell Park are gorgeous with beautiful blooms throughout the year and plenty of places to sit and enjoy them.

This is really one of the most relaxing things to do near Beaumont, TX. Or it’s a great date location!

You’ll also find the Warren Loose Conservatory here which is 10,000 square feet of tropical plants as well as those found in desert environments.

The gardens and conservatory are free to enter and offer a peaceful place to walk and enjoy nature.

EAT! (My Personal Favorite)

One of my personal favorite things to do in Beaumont was to eat at their many amazing restaurants! No matter what type of cuisine you’re on the lookout for you’ll find it in Beaumont.

Don’t miss Tia Juanita’s Fish Camp where you can get an IG worthy margarita flight. If you want tacos then Tacos La Bamba is to die for.

J. Wilson’s and JW’s Patio are two must-visit restaurants while you’re in town. I had the crab-stuffed shrimp at JW’s Patio (pictured) and the breakfast bowl at J. Wilson’s.

Rao’s Bakery serves delicious coffee and baked goods and is a great, quick breakfast spot.

Visit Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum

This replica of Gladys City is managed by Lamar University and gives a peek at what life may have looked like in the original town founded in 1892.

The town was located near the Spindletop site where a geyser of oil exploded on January 10, 1901. This was huge for Texas as it completely changed the economy.

On certain dates you can see a Lucas Gusher Re-enactment where they simulate the oil eruption using water.

Attend One of the Many Markets or Festivals

While I was in town there was a festival downtown on Friday night, a local market going on at Pour Brothers Brewery and a Craft Beer Festival on Sunday afternoon.

Tour a Historic Home

Touring historic homes is another great way to escape the heat of the afternoon. It’s also super interesting to see how people in that area lived back in the day.

There are three different historic homes in Beaumont that you can visit. The John Jay French Museum is the oldest surviving home in Beaumont.

The McFaddin-Ward House is a gorgeous home just outside of downtown with beautiful gardens.

The Chambers House focuses more on what the middle class lived like in the 20th Century. Any of these are great options to tour for an hour or so!

Where to Stay in Beaumont, TX

I stayed at the Holiday Inn & Suites Beaumont-Plaza while I was in Beaumont. The room was comfortable and spacious and the lobby was luxurious.

There was a restaurant and bar on-site and it was a short distance (10 minutes) from anything I wanted to do in town. It was only about 30 minutes from the hiking and kayaking spots in Big Thicket.

This was the perfect home base for my stay in Beaumont!

Wrap Up: What to Do in Beaumont, TX

With so many things to do in Beaumont, Texas it’s hard to choose which one to pick first! Personally, I loved kayaking in the Big Thicket – that’s definitely something you can’t do just anywhere.

My visit was in early June and while it was hot, it wasn’t unbearable. Explore in the mornings and later in the evenings and then either find things to do inside or take a nap in the afternoon.

Pulling over, I found a regional visitor center along with a sculpture so big I stood in the U. Knowledgeable attendants and a lobby full of brochures greet visitors to the Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitor Center . Here you will find information and maps covering Beaumont, along with the nine counties in Southeast Texas. The visitor center is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.

Explore the Cultural District in Downtown Beaumont

The entire downtown Beaumont Commercial District is considered a U.S. Historic District on the National Register. With a bikeable downtown, consider grabbing a Beaucycle to enjoy the museums and public art scattered across the area. St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica

Completed in 1907, St. Anthony Cathedral was declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. One of only four minor basilicas of Texas, you can tour the cathedral with a docent. You do need to make advance reservations. St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica, at 700 Jefferson Street, also holds regular services.

Beaumont Children’s Museum

Find several different interactive exhibits with hands-on activities for kids from babies to tweens at the Beaumont Children’s Museum . The museum is divided into rooms with activities like a foam area for toddlers 4 and under. The Our Town section features a grocery store and bank. There are areas dedicated to the arts like a puppet theater and an arts and crafts area.

Located in the Beaumont Civic Center at 701 Main Street, the Beaumont Children’s Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. Admission for everyone over 12 months old is $5. Babies are free.

Edison Museum

A local collector contributed more than 1,000 artifacts and objects detailing the impact of Thomas A. Edison and his inventions to the Edison Museum. Learn more about the everyday objects Edison invented in the only facility like this east of the Mississippi River. The Edison Museum is located at 350 Pine Street. Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum

Texas is an energy capital and oil was discovered at Spindletop Hill Salt Dome. Located on Lamar University’s campus, learn how the discovery of oil changed the economy of Texas and made Beaumont a boomtown with a visit to the Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum .

Spindletop Museum, located at 5550 Jimmy Simmons Boulevard, is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm. Adult admission is $5 and kids (6 to 12) are $2.

Texas Energy Museum

Stroll through the interactive exhibits at Texas Energy Museum to learn how crude oil is turned into everyday products. The museum discusses petroleum science and technology along with the history of oil at Spindletop.

Texas Energy Museum, at 600 Main Street, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. Adult admission is $5 and kids (6 to 12) are $3.

Historic Homes of Beaumont

McFaddin-Ward House Museum

Old house lovers will enjoy meandering through the McFaddin-Ward House . This gracious home with opulent interiors is on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed in the Beaux-Arts Colonial Revival style, you can see many of the original furnishings. Mamie McFaddin-Ward lived in the house for 75 years and it became a museum after her death.

Visit the McFaddin-Ward House Museum at 1906 Calder Ave. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 9 am to 2:30 pm and is free to tour.

John Jay French Museum

Take a guided tour through the John Jay French House , built in 1845 and is the city’s oldest surviving home. Back in the mid-1800s, homes were constructed of logs in the area. The milled and painted lumber exterior of the John Jay French home was new. Inside, find antique furnishings.

The John Jay French Museum is located at 3025 French Rd. You can tour the home and outbuildings at 10 am, noon, and 2 pm. Tuesday to Friday and at 10 am and noon on Saturday. Admission is $5 for everyone 5 and older.

Beaumont’s Outdoor Spaces

Enjoy the outdoors of Southeast Texas by exploring the birding sites along with the unique ecosystems of the area. There is much to see and this is an ideal outdoor destination for the spring, fall, and winter months.

Cattail Marsh Wetlands Education Center & Boardwalk

Beaumont is a premiere birding site in Texas, especially during the spring and fall migration. The birds traveling through Beaumont migrate along the Mississippi Flyway and the Central Flyway, before heading overwater to the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.

The Cattail Marsh Wetlands is a 900-acre area dedicated to birding and was once a water reclamation site. Now the wetlands boast boardwalks and an elevated interpretive area, perfect for viewing the more than 250 species of birds that visit annually. Be sure to bring your binoculars for the best viewing. The wetlands are open from dawn to dusk and there is no admission charge.

Tyrrell Park

Beaumont’s largest municipal park— Tyrell Park —offers about 500 acres with activities for nearly everyone. Originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Great Depression work relief program for young men, it is now home to the Beaumont Botanical Gardens (near the entrance) and the Cattail Marsh Wetlands Education Center & Boardwalk. Nature lovers can spend all day in Tyrrell Park. Find picnic tables, sports courts, and playgrounds along with a municipal golf course.

Tyrrell Park is also home to Warren Loose Conservatory. You can enjoy a taste of the tropics and rainforests as you walk through the 10,000-square foot enclosed garden space. The park is located at 6088 Babe Zaharias Drive and is open from dawn to dusk with no admission charge.

Big Thicket National Preserve

Just outside of the Beaumont city limits, the Big Thicket National Preserve protects nine different ecosystems in an area where the East Texas Piney Woods meets the Coastal Marsh. It’s a wow moment in the outdoors, where the water lilies outnumber the people.

The area is so rich in plants and animals species, it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve along with a National Park Service preserve. It is one of 16 National Park Service sites and trails in Texas .

With about 40% of the area covered in wetlands, consider a guided tour of the Neches River. Local guide Gerald Cerda of Big Thicket Outfitters takes paddlers of all ages along the Cooks Lake to Scatterman Paddling Trail, a 4.8-mile loop trail designated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. With the slow-moving water, you can relax and take in the Bald Cypress and Water Tupelos along with marine birds and aquatic wildlife. Don’t miss the Madonna tree, thought to be nearly a thousand years old.

Additionally, visitors can take a hike through the Big Thicket National Preserve. Stop by the Big Thicket National Preserve Visitor Center for maps and information along with interpretive exhibits to learn more about the different ecosystems of the area. A nearby, top-rated hike is the Kirby Trail, a 1.5-mile to a 2.5-mile loop trail, suitable for most hikers. Or for plant lovers, the Pitcher Plant Trail is a one-mile trail with carnivorous plants found along the first quarter mile.

Things To Do Outside in Beaumont, TX

Tucked in eastern Texas, along I-10, about 30-minutes from the Louisiana border you’ll find Beaumont, TX.

Often overshadowed by its big brother Houston, Beaumont, is full of surprises and proves to be the perfect destination for those that love exploring the weird, wild, and wonderful and all the things to do outside.

There are gators, lots and lots of gators, a birding trail complete with birdie passport that is smack dab in the middle of the migratory fly zone and even has 4 of the 5 carnivorous plants found in the United States at its national park.

Keep reading because it only gets better.

Visit Gator Country

Just outside the city limits, you’ll find Gator Country, home to Gator 911 from the TNT channel.

Walking through a giant alligator (hello, weird roadside attraction) we step into the gift shop where we’ll purchase tickets, food for the animals, and begin our tour.

Our small group is lucky to be greeted by Callie, the owner’s daughter, and all-around badass. In 2015 she set the records in her region for bench, squat, and deadlift for a total of 1005 pounds….whoa!

Yes, that is her in the photo with a gator. Told ya, she’s pretty awesome.

She warmly greets us and tells us about Gator Country and what we can expect during our visit.

Sadly, the weather isn’t very agreeable for our visit and with cool temps and overcast skies, many of the gators are tucked deep in their ponds staying warm.

However, any chance to possibly see a gator and this midwestern girl is all over it.

This is where Big Al, an 84-year-old alligator who measures in at 13 feet 4 inches and weighs more than 1,000 lbs and Big Tex, the national record for the largest live-captured nuisance alligator measuring in at 13 feet 8 ½ inches live.

In addition to Big Al and Big Tex, there are over 450 American alligators, crocodiles, and many different reptiles plus goats, chickens, big fluffy rabbits and one adorable trash panda (aka raccoon).

On good weather days, you’d be able to see a gator show and even feed the gators hot dogs. However, during our visit, they only had an educational talk about gators and reptiles available.

Gator Country offers an excellent and highly competitive internship program and it’s the interns that shared knowledge about the animals at Gator Country during the education program.

A note for those a bit squeamish about snakes (waves arm in the air), they do bring snakes out and walk by the audience with them ((shudder)).

But, the interns are knowledgable and their love for the animals shine through.

The education program takes place at the reptile house which is home to many critters. I walked in to see the inside and then kinda made my way back out as quickly as I could.

I may think gators are cute, but I’m definitely not a fan of reptiles.

The reptile house at Gator Country, however, is a great place to learn about venomous critters you might find in Texas.

We did have the opportunity to hold a baby gator which I always love. They are so cute when they are little.

It’s easy to spend half a day or more at the park. In addition to the park, they also offer boat swamp tours for an additional fee that lasts around an hour.

Before you leave Gator Country be sure to have your Birdie Passport stamped in the gift shop.

Explore Beaumont with the Birdie Passport

The Birdie Passport is a fun way to find things to do outside in Beaumont and take home a stuffed Audubon birdie that tweets.

Each location on the passport has its own signature bird with a name and story. Pick up a free passport at a participating business or the visitors center and then get it stamped at local attractions.

Once you collect a minimum of 10 stamps in your passport turn it in and go home with a bird.

In the few days I was there I was able to get quite a few stamps (about 6 without really trying) in my passport. The birdie passport will take you to museums, historical houses, and attractions.

Cattail Marsh

Be sure to visit Cattail Marsh Wetlands and not only will you be able to get your passport stamped at the brand new education center you’ll be able to see a number of birds that call Beaumont home.

Cattail Marsh Wetlands is also a stop on the migratory trail, during migration season you’ll see many different species of birds.

During my visit I saw ducks, egrets, birds I couldn’t identify, but thought were adorable, and, the highlight, was peeking through another birder’s spotting scope to see a pair of Eagles with their eaglets.

That was an incredible opportunity to watch the Eagles feed the young.

Cattail Marsh Wetlands is also home to alligators and hiking/biking trails so if you are walking/biking around the area just be aware that there could be a gator sunning itself on or near the trail.

Leave them alone and they’ll leave you alone and you’ll be fine.

Additional Places You’ll Find Birdie Passport Stamps

The birdie passport will also take you to the following places:

McFaddin-Ward House – This house is a gorgeous 1906 true Texas oil boom home. Beaumont is, after all, where oil was discovered in 1901 and changed our world forever.
Beaumont Children’s Museum – A great place for kids to run and play especially on a rainy day.
Texas Energy Museum – See how our world changed with the oil boom. Follow the path of the discovery of oil through today’s process and what products we use in our everyday world that has oil or oil byproducts in it. You might just be surprised, I know I was.
Art Museum of Southeast Texas – A small, yet bright and well-curated art museum.
Fire Museum of Texas – Antique fire trucks, a great play area for kids and one of the world’s largest working fire hydrants that is a perfect IG moment and roadside attraction stop.
Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown – Tells the story of a 1901 oil discovery that made America a world power.
Beaumont Botanical Gardens – In the same park as Cattail Marsh Wetlands. If you have time to visit swing in and wander the gardens.
Lamar University Reaud Honors University – Beaumont’s local university
Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitor Center – Located right off of I-10 it’s packed with information you can use for your visit.
Babe Zaharias Museum – A museum dedicated to Mildred “ Babe ” Didrikson Zaharias who was the greatest female athlete of all time.
Clifton Steamboat Musem – Large museum offering history exhibits on steamboats & wars fought in Texas, plus artifacts & art.
John French Museum – Built in 1845, it is the oldest house in Beaumont that has been restored to its original state.
Chambers House – Owned by the Chambers family for 90 years, this preserved house is typical of life in the 1920s. Be sure to ask about their ghost stories.

Take A Horseback Trail Ride at Tyrell Park Stables

While you’re out at Cattail Marsh you may as well saddle up and take a horseback trail ride. This is Texas after all and if you’re in Texas it would be wrong not to spend at least a little time on horseback.

The good folks at Tyrell Park Stables in Tyrell Park are more than happy to accommodate you.

After a brief lesson on how to make your horse go, turn, and stop you’ll be given some treats to share with your horse before hopping up in the saddle.

Once on horseback its time to head out. Fortunately, the horses are used to trail rides and they all just walk in a single file.

If your horse tries to veer off course or take lead, a gentle reminder that you’re in charge is all they need to stay on track.

Rides last about an hour and it’s a great way to see a different side of Beaumont, Texas.

Search for Carnivorous Plants at Big Thicket National Park

Rounding out my visit to Beaumont was a visit to Big Thicket National Park where you’ll find 4 of the 5 carnivorous plants found in the United States.

To be honest, I only knew of the Venus Fly Trap and wasn’t aware there were others in the U.S.

Surprise, there are 4 others. All of which you can see in the wild at Big Thicket.

The carnivorous plants you’ll find include:

Pitcher Plant
Butterworts
Bladderwarts

In addition to carnivorous plants, you’ll find a very diverse ecology. The park spans 15 different areas across 7 counties and includes 1000s of acres, multiple hiking trails, and even hunting opportunities.

We explored the Sundew Trail, about a mile north of the visitors center, with Ranger Halbrook,

The trail is a very easy 1-mile loop stroll. Along the way, we learned about Long Leaf Pine Trees.

These pines were almost decimated from the area during the lumber boom, but have slowly been making a comeback.

Nature is so cool! Did you know that the Long Leaf Pine trees can survive forest fires and controlled burns when they are young saplings?

I thought the fire would destroy them, but, in fact, it makes them grow bigger and stronger because it gives them more access to sunlight.

During our guided hike we learned about snakes, yes, the park has many, and Ranger Halbrook showed us two of the four carnivorous plants. THAT was really cool!

Another very cool fact about this national park is that in addition to free guided hikes they also offer free guided kayak tours. Yes, free!!

The kayak, paddle, life vest, and ranger are all provided free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The kayak tours take you out to Village Creek or the Natchez River.

The kayak adventures generally last 4-6 hours (bring water, snacks, and sunscreen) and require a minimum of 6-8 people.

Look For Beaumont’s Public Art

I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the wonderful public art you can find in and around Beaumont.

There are a number of fun murals that just scream for a selfie or at least a photograph.

Painted utility boxes and public sculptures abound.

I was fortunate to meet local artist Ines Alvidres, during my time in Beaumont. We chatted over lunch at Tacos La Bamba (more on that epic food later.)

She shared how she started her art career and how she got to where she is today. Ines is one of the most beautiful souls I’ve met and a very talented artist.

When you visit La Bamba you can see her artwork on one of the tables. Once I knew her artwork I was able to easily spot it around town. I tried to convince her to offer small prints so travelers could bring her artwork home with them.

Hopefully, when I visit next I’ll be packing an Ines Alvidres print in my suitcase to bring home.

What You Need To Know Before You Go to Beaumont TX

Beaumont is a very affordable destination.

Restaurants, attractions, and hotels are all friendly to your wallet and won’t require you to take out a second mortgage.

In fact, many of the museums and attractions are free.

What to do, where to eat, what to see.

Explore Beaumont's black history and culture with an itinerary full of black-owned businesses, black-owned restaurants and pay homage to sites dedicated to black leaders making waves in the community. SETX is one of the most diverse areas in the country and it's high time we celebrate that and start telling those stories.

From Patillo’s , the oldest family-owned barbecue restaurant in Texas and the oldest African American owned barbecue restaurant in the state to local legends like Frank Robinson, the only MLB player to win MVP in both the National and American leagues and only African American to manage both leagues, we think you’ll find lots of surprising history that comes from diverse voices.

Things to Do

Get wet and wild at golden triangle watersports.

Cool off from the Texas heat by renting jet skis equipped with Bluetooth speakers from Golden Triangle Watersports and travel the beautiful Neches River. Golden Triangle Watersports offers an experience full of fun and excitement for families.

Relax at Martin Luther King Jr. Park

This amazing park is a constant reminder of freedom and unity. The park is quiet, secluded, and full of historical facts, and there is a stunning statue of the great Dr. Martin Luther King . Take a journey through black history and take time to appreciate all those that fought for freedom and civil rights. The stone display wall includes excerpts from King's legendary, "I Have a Dream" speech.

Admire the Joe Louis Monument

In downtown Beaumont you can come face to face with one of Boxing’s Heavyweight Champions of the World. Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time. He reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 until his temporary retirement in 1949. This bronze statue sits on a tall granite base right next tucked in right between City Hall and Beaumont Civic Center . The sculpture was donated by Ben Rogers, past president of the Joe Louis Foundation.

Explore the Charlton-Pollard and Pear Orchard Historical Neighborhoods

Drive through two of Beaumont great neighborhoods that were built by many of Beaumont under great African American culture and leadership. These neighborhoods helped to build schools, hospitals, and other businesses and pave the way for Southeast Texas development.

View the Barbershop Mural in Downtown Beaumont

A Beaumont native who now resides in LA, Henry Art Smith returned home to create art for his community. The self-taught fashion designer and muralist created the silhouettes of four African American boys said to depict the different hairstyles and personalities you’ll find at a barbershop, along with black unity.

See the Felix "Fox" Harris Gallery at Art Museum of Southeast Texas

A centerpiece of AMSET’s permanent collection is the larger-than-life folk art of Felix “Fox” Harris. For over 20 years, Harris crafted his eclectic yard sculptures out of recycled materials inspired to make art by a vision from God to create “somethin’ out of nothin.’” The pieces are made out of scrap metal, old toys, and streets signs painstakingly crafted with whatever he had around like knives and hammers. Neighbors used to call him “the Voodoo Man,” unsure what to make out of the junk / art. Cutting edge for the time, it also helped define the Art Museum of Southeast Texas’s folk collection and motif. The collection was donated to the museum in exchange for paying his funeral costs.

Patillo’s bbq.

Opened way back in 1912, Patillo’s is the oldest black-owned and family- owned restaurant in Texas. Patillo’s offer some of the most unique Southeast Texas style BBQ including their signature hand stuffed links. Stop by for ribs, dirty rice, beans, and potato salad.

Uncle Henry’s Tamales

Open since 1937, Uncle Henry’s Hot Tamales offers the best pork cracklin' in the region. Their specialty is the Creole Tamale which has corn meal instead of masa. Make a quick stop for snacks, and be sure to try the nachos or chili.

Jones' Old Fashion Sausage and Restaurant

If you are looking for some of the best soul food around SETX, Jones' Old Fashion Sausage and Restaurant is your spot. With all the traditional soul food flavors that will have you searching the kitchen for your auntie and grandma, Jones offers not just their homemade beef sausage, but you can get some crispy mouthwatering fried chicken, smothered oxtails, pork bones, smothered quail, green beans, okra, collard greens, sweet-as-can-be candied yams, and much more. They have a flavor explosion of traditional soul food flavors.

More Points of Interest

Go back in time at tyrrell historical library.

The Tyrrell Historical Library focuses on collecting and preserving the unique history of Beaumont and the surrounding communities in southeast Texas to get a good sense of what life was like over the decades. If you go through the archives, you’ll find a variety of personal papers, business, organizational, civic, fraternal, and city records including family letters, journals, diaries, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, business reports, minutes and correspondence, along with a multitude of visual items represented by photographs, slides, negatives, and artwork from 1850 to the present.

Relax at Pipkin Park

Pipkin Park is named after a black man and is down the street from Hotel Dieu, the black hospital in Beaumont. It is home to the Memorial Temple to the Brave as well as the War Veterans Memorial Statue. The Temple to the Brave was built by the Daughters of the America Revolution in memorial of those who died in World War I. The date of the dedication - October 18, 1932 corresponds to the day 18 years earlier when American forces suffered some the heaviest casualties of the war - just a few days before the armistice of November 11, 1918 was signed.

See the Blind Willie Johnson Historical Marker at Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church

“Blind Willie” Johnson, known as the “Sightless Visionary” and bluesman and virtuoso of the "bottleneck" or slide guitar was a self-taught musician. He has over 30 gospel albums before the Great Depression ended his career. He continued to perform as a street singer but and operated a House of Prayer in Beaumont until his death in 1945.

Admire the Dr. Richard Price Auditorium at Lamar University

Dr. Richard L. Price—"Doc Price"—an associate professor of mathematics had a long and distinguished career in academics. He has devoted himself to recruiting and mentoring black students to Lamar and preparing them for careers in engineering, mathematics, and the sciences. He received a lifetime achievement award from the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).

Seek Out “Old Sock” Shicole Dickenson’s Fishing Spot Near Collier’s Ferry Park

One of the oldest slaves, Shicole was born around 1790. The son of an African tribal chief, he was captured by a Spanish pirate ship and sold into slavery where he worked on a Louisiana plantation. Emancipated in 1865, he retired to a life of fishing in Beaumont before drowning in the river from his leaking boat. His nickname came from an old sock he tied to his belt to carry his valuables. Wherever he went he was heard singing mournful African songs, clinging to his native culture. He became such a staple of the community that when he died in 1889 The Enterprise eulogized him in an obituary, which was very rare for a black man in that period.

The Chambers family had only one domestic employee who lived on the premises, their cook, Amy. She lived in a small house behind theirs. Amy worked for the Chambers family until sometime between 1928 and 1933, quitting while Florence was away at university. Separate buildings, by the 1920s, it became less common for domestic employees to live onsite, instead choosing to live close to the family in their own homes. Martin Luther King Blvd, once known as Mariposa Street, became a community of domestic employees who worked for the prominent families on Calder Ave and paved the way for the development of the area.
