Safari Song by Greta Van Fleet

what does safari song sound like

Songfacts®:

  • Greta Van Fleet had to tone this down from its original incarnation. Bassist Sam Kiszka explained to ABC Radio : "When we formatted 'Safari Song' for the first time, there was a lot more percussion. We kind of, I don't wanna say Dumbed it down, but kinda simplified it in the studio." "When you go in the studio, you go from four musicians to infinite musicians in there, you can layer, like, 30 guitars," he continued. "I think the important part is learning how to do that in discretion." Guitarist Jake Kiszka added that the band is happy with the final track. "It was taking too many liberties and being overly creative," he said.

  • Dustin from Ohio Glad the band stopped complaining about the LZ comparisons. There is nothing wrong with being compared to a legendary band like LZ.

Related tags, why does greta van fleet’s music sound so much like led zeppelin.

The Detroit rockers are often claimed to be ripping off Page, Plant and co, but why is that? And is there anything wrong with it? We take a closer look at the music to try to find out.

Greta Van Fleet

It’s impossible to imagine a world without Led Zeppelin … unless apparently, you’re Greta Van Fleet . From the moment the Grammy-winning four-piece burst on to the scene, the Michigan rockers have drawn heavy comparison with hard rock’s most iconic and influential band. In recent years everyone from NME and Rolling Stone to Ultimate Guitar have noted the striking similarity between Led Zeppelin’s legendary sound and the music GVF began making decades later. Even Robert Plant chimed in, claiming that “they are Led Zeppelin I ” in 2017.

  • READ MORE: Josh Scott: The Day that Santa Died (Or Four Guitar Pedal Myths, Busted)

But the band themselves have played down that connection, initially only acknowledging Led Zeppelin as one of a host of varied influences that they drew from. That just stoked the fires of online derision from fans and critics alike, who have dismissed the band as ‘rip offs’ of the original, with Pitchfork  witheringly dismissing them as a band who “don’t even realize they’re more of an algorithmic fever dream than an actual rock band”.

It’s perhaps not surprising that the band quickly started to bristle at the comparison, with guitarist Jake Kiszka going as far as to sarcastically claim that he’d “never heard of them” when asked about Led Zep in an interview. As you can imagine, that only made the situation worse, and now it’s hard to talk about GVF – who are one of the most popular new guitar bands of recent years – without mentioning the Led Zeppelin rip-off accusations.

But why  does Greta Van Fleet’s music sounds so similar to Led Zeppelin? We all know it instinctively, but there must be a reason for that, surely? Well, let’s find out…

Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page Les Paul

Highway one

Let’s take Highway Tune , GVF’s 2017 breakout hit and still their most popular song – it’s easy to see why, this gritty but polished track is a three-minute slice of remarkably faithful classic rock, but even putting genre aside, there’s something very familiar about it, almost like we’ve heard it before.

Perhaps the most striking similarity is Josh Kiszka’s vocal – the high-pitched wail that opens the track is remarkably Plant-like, and given the two vocalists share a near-four-octave range, perhaps that’s inevitable, but there’s more here.

Back in 1975 Led Zeppelin’s sixth studio LP, Physical Graffiti features a track called, The Rover , a classic Page-driven song that features a memorable gritty bluesy riff. Written in F♯ minor, this riff features a descending minor pentatonic scale figure at the end that sounds very familiar indeed. Flipping back to Highway Tune  and we have a very similar pentatonic figure, with the same the same descent and semitone string bends, but raised a semitone in key and switched to a major tonality.

If we look at another of GVF’s biggest hits, Safari Song , we can pick out more sonic similarities. Again, Josh’s Plant-like wail instantly sets the tone, but this time it’s more the folk-meets-rock vibe of Led Zeppelin IV ’s classic Rock And Roll that Jake appears to be channelling here, with similar ‘rockabilly’ vibes and the wiry high treble guitar strokes, and the bridge chords on When The Curtain Falls have more than a little in common with the chorus of Ramble On  It’s not just the guitar either, if you listen closely to the song Flower Power , you’ll notice the organ fadeout is almost identical to the one on Led Zeppelin I s Your Time is Gonna Come .

Sounds like

But it’s not just about the notes that are being played of course, and it’s hard to miss the remarkable similarity between the tones that Jake Kiska is getting. It’s all the more interesting that his rig sounds so Page -like given that he’s primarily an SG player, when most of Led Zeppelin was recorded with either a Telecaster or Page’s iconic ’59 Les Paul – perhaps their shared affinity for vintage-style Marshalls is the secret ingredient. Whatever it is, the tonal similarity is uncanny, and it’s something replicated elsewhere in the band – Danny Wagner’s Ludwig Vistalite drum kit was John Bonham’s go-to.

But the ultimate question is, does it really matter? It’s not as if Led Zeppelin didn’t heavily draw from their influences when they were writing anyway. When John Paul Jones wrote Black Dog , he couldn’t even remember which of his blues icons he’d cribbed off – initially stating he’d been listening to Muddy Waters when he came up with the riff, before latterly correcting the record that it was actually Howlin’ Wolf .

And it’s not as if GVF are the first band to be compared to Led Zep either. In the 80s, Robert Plant memorably christened Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale as ‘David Cover Version’ such was their perceived similarity in vocal style. Even this year, Eurovision kings Måneskin have been compared to Led Zep among others, though the Italians seem to have accepted those comparisons as a compliment, as opposed to a critique.

Led Zeppelin

When The Curtain Falls vs Ramble On

The third track on GVF’s 2018 album Anthem of the Peaceful Army is hard to miss. You don’t get a more monstrous riff than the beginning. But does it sound familiar? Perhaps it doesn’t appear a carbon copy to Zep’s Ramble On , but the structure stays melodically similar. Based on the pentatonic scale again, as is the result of blues-rock, Kiszka’s riff is a fleshed out, and louder, rendition of Page’s thin rhythmic opening, reportedly played on the lighter sounding Fender Telecaster. Led Zeppelin were known to play around with dynamics quite extensively — it wasn’t missing in Ramble On  as John Paul Jones changed between loud and soft as he conversed with Page via crotchets and quavers.

Perhaps GVF take it upon themselves to stick to forte and mezzo forte dynamics, skipping over the loud/soft seesaw often woven into Zeppelin songs. But GVF play classic rock because it’s, in drummer Sam Kiszka’s words, “a lost ideology” (Apple Music, 2018), and who wouldn’t want to play it from the roof if it’s dying? From the jangling rock ‘n’ roll textures to the thrilling shreds, yells and howls, they couldn’t be played on any volume other than full.

Jake Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet

And perhaps that’s the key difference that has made Greta Van Fleet such a polarising band – by trying to avoid the obvious comparisons with Led Zeppelin, they’ve made people more conscious of them. It seems on that one, the young Detroit rockers have softened slightly, with Kiska telling FaceCulture , “I think that we’ve become more conscious of it, because I don’t think before we ever really realised, in a lot of senses, the similarities or the commonalities that we share with that group.

“It’s being said over and over, and I think it’s one of the greatest compliments that could ever be given to a young band like ourselves. They’re arguably one of the greatest rock bands of all time, so that is humbling and inspiring and honourable, in that sense.”

The history of popular music wouldn’t exist without people cribbing and borrowing from artists that have gone before, and in that regard Greta Van Fleet are carrying on one of the great traditions of rock ‘n’ roll – there’s nothing to be ashamed of there.

Songs in the Music app will suddenly sound muffled in the middle of playing. Clicking progress bar resets sounds.

Hello, I've had a weird issue where songs will randomly start sounding muffled as the song plays on the Music app on my Mac mini M1. Everything would sound fine and, at a random spot in a song (any song), the sound becomes slightly muffled. While it's obvious when it happens, it's also not as if the speakers sounded like they were playing from 3 rooms away. Imagine hearing clear sound and all of a sudden, it sounds as if someone covered the speakers with a blanket.

This happens suddenly, not gradually.

Hitting the play/pause button doesn't fix it, however clicking the progress bar in the music app does restore the sound.

It seems like it happens once per playing session, if that makes sense. I'm not sure if it happens every time I restart the app, or the computer, or I log in or out. I'll have to test that, but it seems to just happen once while I sit a the computer. It works fine until I leave the computer and come back some time later.

I know it happens while streaming music but I am unsure if it happens with downloaded songs.

It seemed to happen regardless of the following settings:

  • Dolby Atmos on/off/Automatic
  • Crossfade on/off
  • Sound Enhancer on/off
  • Sound Check on/off
  • Lossless audio on/off (currently set to Hi-Res Lossless up to 192 kHz)

I haven't noticed this happening while playing content on other platforms (video editing, streaming from a browser, etc).

I've had this happen using the 3.5mm jack output connected to an amplifier driving passive speakers. I've tried 2 different amplifiers with the same results. Currently I am using a Schiit Audio USB DAC connected to active Edifier speakers, and it still happens which makes me feel like it has something to do with the Music app itself.

Both the Mac and the Music app are up to date (at the time of this posting, macOS Montery 12.2.1 and Music 12.2.2.40).

I'm at a loss.

FYI, currently in contact with Apple Support.

A few more tests: I loaded up the memory on my computer with a couple heavy apps opened (less than 200MB of free memory) and listened to one long song that has failed this morning (Brother John). I could see the progress bar load up the streaming but the song never got muffled.

Next I'll try listening to just songs on my computer to see if this happens again, however that will take some time. In the

meantime, the "normal" Apple Support is stumped and is bumping this issue up to their "Senior support specialists."

I paused that last song in which it happened and started filming. You can't really tell that it's muffled but you can tell that the sound changes. Video is attached: https://youtu.be/hO-Cw1uMl44

  • Apple music application on Mac I recently updated to MacOS to 11.4 and I started to have a lot of issues with apple music. Specifically, before a song starts I will sometimes get ear raped with an extremely loud and sharp noise. I nearly jumped out of my chair the first time I heard it. Another issue that has appeared is my music cutting out. Once a song is finished it shuffles to a new song but no sound is projected from my computer. It just plays the song silently until I notice and manually go back to the application to choose a new song. After-which the problem repeats itself a few songs later. All I am really wondering is if this is a problem other people are having. I haven't seen anything here on the forums about. Thanks in advance! 240 1
  • Apple Music noise in MacBookPro 16" After I updated my Mac to the version 12.4 the Music app makes terrible sourds when I play music. This is not a problem with the computer itself because youtube and QuickTime still working well. This just happens when I use the speakers, not the headphones or another external speakers. Fix it asap, I can't believe the very bad testing they have these days. 363 3
  • Apple Music loud buzz in start of songs randomly I must ask if this is a subject of settings in my Apple Music program. I have it set at Lossless 24 bit / 48 K, and this is only happening on my computer. MacBook Air M1 2020 OS 11.4. Randomly at the start of songs there is this super loud buzz for maybe one second and after that the song starts and plays normally. This is not bound to the songs; if I repeat them or listen to another one and then play it again it does not happen. It maybe happen in one of 15 songs or so. It is so loud it hurts my ears when I use headphones, like the computer maxes out the volume during the buzz and then plays the song at the volume level I use. What can I do to prevent this, it is quite annoying. Please excuse my bad English. Kindest regards Martin Ljunggren 5021 13

Mar 16, 2022 10:30 AM in response to gdutilh

Been doing more testing after my Mac finally updated to macOS Monterey 12.3 (that was requested by Apple's Senior Tech). This morning, after a fresh restart, I started listening to music. Almost one hour after starting (13 songs), it finally happened within the last minute of a David Bowie song. All songs were streaming.

Then I downloaded all the songs in a particular playlist I have and have been listening to these for over an hour now (16 songs so far) and the issue hasn't happened and that's with the memory pretty full too (currently 230MB available of 16GB).

Mar 18, 2022 12:00 PM in response to gdutilh

This has been escalated to Apple's engineering team. They had me install a special diagnostic app and had it run for a little over 24hrs while I used my computer as normal. The issue happened a handful of times (happened through the USB DAC connected to the powered speakers and the Mac mini M1 connected directly to the powered speakers with a 3.5mm/RCA cable). This issue did not happen after over 1hr15min of listening with my Apple AirPods Pro.

They gathered diagnostics and are reviewing the information.

Mar 15, 2022 9:31 AM in response to gdutilh

Just happened another 2 songs after. I let it play while muffled while trying to change some settings. Couldn't get all the settings I wanted to try but here's what I think I learned:

  • Crossfade on/off had no effect.
  • Sound Enhancer on/off had no effect (on the muffling that is, the sound changed but was muffled still on both settings).
  • Sound Check was ON, when I turned it OFF oaths particular song (Take the Money and Run by Steve Miller Band), the song got much louder and I had a hard time telling if it was muffled. When I turned Sound Check back ON to compare, the streaming restarted (paused though).

That made me think maybe Sound Check was the culprit so I turned it off and kept playing music.

The very next song started playing nicely (Love Me Two Times (Mono) by The Doors), but with about 45 seconds left (and Sound Check OFF), the sound became very muffled!

This doesn't usually happen THAT often as I said in my post originally. I can usually listen for a little while without this muffling happening. Today however, for whatever reason, it has happened in 4 of the last 7 songs I was listening to. This is becoming unbearable.

Mar 15, 2022 9:20 AM in response to gdutilh

Little update and correction. It definitely doesn't happen only once. I just had it happen twice, a few songs apart (all streaming). Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap from AC/DC had that muffling happen with about 50 seconds left in the song. Then 2 other songs streamed just fine and it happened again with about a minute left on Brother John from Blues Traveler. I don't think it's song specific (or file specific) but it can't hurt to share all the info I guess.

Again, play/pause didn't fix it, but clicking the progress bar did.

10 Sounds to Listen for on Safari

10 Sounds to Listen for on Safari

Patrick has been an Africa travel specialist, based in Australia, for over 10 years and prior to that was a safari operator in Mana Pools in Zimbabwe.

When you go on safari you could be forgiven for thinking that it was all about what animals you will see…but it’s much more than this. There are the landscapes, the smells…and also, the sounds. So, what are the sounds to listen for on safari?

Here are 10 sounds to listen for on safari (ask your guide to help you identify each on the list):

1. Fish Eagle

Perhaps the most iconic call in Africa, the fish eagle should be first on anyone’s list.

African fish eagle with a catch

2. Lion & Leopard

Of course, everyone wants to hear the roar of a lion in the wild…it goes without saying. But don’t forget to listen out for the rasping call of the leopard (it sounds like someone sawing a piece of wood).

3. Coucal (a Common Family of Birds)

You know you have woken up in Africa when, as you lie in your bed at first light, you hear the loquacious glug, glug sound of a coucal …(often referred to as the ‘bottle bird’ as its call sounds like the water being poured from a bottle – descending as it empties!).

4. Ground Hornbill

Wake up to the sound of “five bob, two and six” as it resonates through the bush emanating from a bird that spends all day on the ground, lives in a family group, shares responsibility for raising its young (cooperative breeding), and has eyelashes that are actually feathers!

Southern ground hornbill

5. Reed Frogs

Like the sound of ice clinking in your glass at sundowner time, the sound of hundreds of reed frogs can be both appealing and calming. Wait for early evening.

6. Spotted Hyena

Not to be outdone by the big cats, the evenings are often punctuated by the sinister ‘whooping’ call of the spotted hyena – ever so eerie but not as spine-tingling as their high-pitched, human-like cackle when approaching a kill!

Hyena

7. Nightjar

The eerie sound of a nightjar can often be heard late at night as you lie in your bed – smooth and rhythmical.

8. Pearl-spotted Owl

What an enthralling sound this is. It begins as a shrill whistle and then builds to a crescendo before descending seemingly into the distance.

9. Red-billed Hornbill

This is the sound we identify with most when the hot, dry months come to the African bush. The air is still and the midday heat means little is moving, and then the ka’ka, ka’ka, ka’ka of the red-billed hornbill fills the air. Magic.

Western red-billed hornbill

10. Your Early Morning Wake-up Call

The sound of ‘knock, knock’ as your room attendant brings you tea and coffee as the first light of dawn brings in a new day! Followed by the unzipping of your tent and the rattle of cups as he places the tea down…time to face a new day on safari…new experiences and new rewards. Enjoy.

Listen to the Sounds...Firsthand

These are the sounds of Africa. Often, we focus on the sights – the beautiful photo ops of magnificent wildlife and stunning scenery. However, the sounds evoke so many feelings and emotions, like joy, fear, anger, love and serenity. Why not book a safari tour and experience your very own African symphony... under the stars? The experience will be unforgettable. For more information, contact us at SafariBookings .

African safari sounds – Animal noises of the bush and savanna

Yawning hippo at sunset, Kruger

Most people go on safari thinking about the sights. Lions, baboons, elephants, hippos! What an adventure!

But visit wild Africa, and you will explore with all your senses . I have as many memories of sounds and smells as I do of the sights.

Out in the bush, you hear strange noises, especially in the stillness of the night. So it’s good to know the African animal sounds before you go, especially if you will be camping in the African savanna .

I personally don’t think any animal sounds beat that of a trumpeting elephant . If a whole herd is blowing their trunks, then it quickly becomes an orchestra.

In this article, you can listen to all the top sounds of the wild while learning how to identify different mammals and birds.

The post includes most of the top safari sounds , those that you are likely to come across on any safari.

I love the nighttime bush sounds – when it’s so quiet, it’s easy to pick up on any noise.

Most Popular African Animal Sounds

Beautiful male lion at night, under the moonlight

Baboon sound names cannot be summed up with a single word. These primates have a diverse vocal repertoire comprising various calls , barks , and grunts . They also make distressed calls or yaks .

Female baboons also make loud copulation calls , while males are often heard using long-distance screams. Want to hear the various baboon calls yourself? Check out the video below.

2. Elephant

Wondering what sounds elephants make ? Let’s start with the one that many people know— trumpeting .

This is the sound elephants make when pushing air out through their trunk. It is usually made when the elephant is excited or distressed.

Another sound in this beautiful animal’s vocabulary is growls or rumbles . This is a lower-frequency sound that is generally used for short-distance communication.

Other sounds that African elephants make include squeaks , roars , grunts , barks , and snorts .

Hippos make many unique sounds, including grunts , roars , groans , and growls . They’re also known to make loud wheezing and chuffing noises.

Hippos can also communicate underwater. These hippo sounds resonate in the jawbone and neck and include squeaks , croaks , and whines .

Do hyenas really “laugh” ? The short answer is yes . This is one of the most renowned African savanna sounds.

The laughter of a hyena is generally used to communicate and convey excitement, fear, or frustration.

Hyenas also make a variety of softer sounds, including growls , grunts , and squeaks .

Impalas are loud animals, especially when compared to other antelope species . You’ll be able to hear their high-volume roars from up to 2 km away.

Jackals are very vocal animals. They communicate with one another using high-pitched howls , growls , and yaps . Some are also known to hoot .

While leopards are usually quiet, they have also made a name for themselves with their long sawing roar . This unique sound is usually repeated for a minute at a time and can travel up to 12 km.

Listening through headphones or on a mobile isn’t the same as being out in the wild. You don’t hear these wildlife sounds in isolation. All the sounds mingle together, and you never know what will come next .

At the best safari camps, you drift off to nature’s lullaby. Sometimes you even wake in the night to a strange sound, like baboons nearby or hippos fighting at a distant river.

Then the next morning, you inspect the camp to see what kind of visitors left their evidence in the grass.

Going on safari is the only way you can truly listen to the sounds of the savannah. And don’t forget the smells as well!

If you want to see a lion, you can look at a photo. But if you want to experience a lion, you need to go on safari and come face to face with the apex predator .

You might be able to spot a hippo in a zoo, but only on a safari can you understand how these giant animals live in the wild.

A safari provides a connection with nature . You’re completely immersed, surrounded on all sides by the sights, sounds, and smells of the wild.

And that is a very special feeling that I hope everyone gets to experience at least once in their lifetime.

Listen to some of the most popular African animal noises there are. These are the sounds you are likely to hear on an African safari: lion , hippo , baboon , and more.

Hello, I have been on safari three times and do camping in small tents. Even though I am usually there when it is cold at night we keep all our tent flaps open so that we can hear the nighttime sounds. I love hearing hyenas doing their whopping call and the call of a lion in the distance and the jackals. I truly wish someone would make an audio of the night sounds, I miss it so much when I am home and would love to be able to play something at night to help me go to sleep and to dream that I am there.

Top 10 Fascinating African Safari Sounds

Embarking on an African safari is a sensory journey like no other. Beyond the mesmerising landscapes and wildlife, the symphony of sounds that fills the air adds a whole new dimension to your adventure. From the thunderous roars to the delicate whispers of the wilderness, here are 10 African safari sounds from the bushveld that you should listen out for:

what does safari song sound like

The lion's roar needs no introduction. The deep, rumbling resonance sends shivers down your spine and evokes a mix of fear and awe, a reminder that you're in the heart of the wild. Lions tend to roar in a very characteristic manner, starting with a few deep, long roars that trail off into a series of shorter ones. They most often roar at night; the sound, which can be heard from a distance of 8 kilometres (5.0 mi), is used to advertise the animal's presence and to communicate with other lions and lionesses.

Where will I hear this sound? Lions are found in various African countries, including Kenya , Tanzania , South Africa , Botswana , Zimbabwe, and more. They inhabit savannahs and grasslands where prey is abundant, such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

2. African Thunderstorm

If you've been fortunate enough to witness an African thunderstorm, you know that it's an experience that can't be replicated. The sudden clash of lightning, the dramatic roll of thunder, and the rush of rain. Sudden, dramatic, powerful, deafeningly loud, and gone before you know it!

Where will I hear this sound? African thunderstorms are a common occurrence across much of the continent, particularly during the rainy seasons.

3. Fish Eagle

what does safari song sound like

The African Fish Eagle's haunting cry is the embodiment of Africa's waterways. Its distinctive "weee-ah, hyo-hyo" or "heee-ah, heeah-heeah" call resonates near lakes and rivers. As these majestic raptors soar over water bodies, their calls blend seamlessly with the rippling currents below.

Where can I hear this sound? The haunting call of the African Fish Eagle can be heard near water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Countries like Zambia , Botswana , Namibia , and Uganda offer opportunities to hear this distinctive call.

4. Crickets

As the sun sets over the African bushveld, a delicate chorus of crickets begins, providing the melodic backdrop for evening gatherings around the BBQ or braai. The sound emitted by male crickets is commonly referred to as chirping. Interestingly, crickets chirp at different rates depending on their species and the temperature of their environment. Most species chirp at higher rates the higher the temperature is. What an interesting way to gauge the temperature if there is no thermometer on hand!

Where can I hear this sound? Crickets serenade the African nights in various regions, from East Africa's Serengeti and Maasai Mara to Southern Africa's Kruger National Park and Okavango Delta.

5. Fiery-Necked Nightjar

As the moon graces the sky, the fiery-necked nightjar takes the stage with its distinctive "good Lord deliver us" call described by birders. The call is particularly audible through the full moon phase, less so on darker nights. Many of you will have encountered the Fiery-necked Nightjar on your evening game drives. It is very often found sitting on road surfaces being blinded by oncoming vehicle headlights, “sitting tight” until the very last second, before flying off in a disorientated manner.

Where can I hear this sound? These birds can be found in wooded and open habitats across much of sub-Saharan Africa. They are commonly heard during night drives and walks in game reserves and national parks.

Another distinctive night sound of the African bush. Many people who have tried to hold conversations around a campfire will attest to the fact that the African cicada produces the loudest insect sound in the world! With sounds reaching volumes comparable to power saws, they craft an intricate auditory tapestry that becomes synonymous with the African night.

Where can I hear this sound? Cicadas are widespread throughout Africa and can be heard in many countries, especially during warm months.

7. Hippopotamus

what does safari song sound like

Hippos produce a loud hiss, snort, or distinctive grunt that sounds like a blast from a tuba. Hippopotamuses appear to communicate verbally, through grunts and bellows, and it is thought that they may practice echolocation, but the purpose of these vocalizations is currently unknown. Hippos have the unique ability to hold their head partially above the water and send out a cry that travels through both water and air; hippos above and under water will respond.

Where can I hear this sound? Hippos inhabit water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and waterholes. Places like the Luangwa River in Zambia , Chobe River in Botswana , and Lake Victoria in Uganda are known for their hippopotamus populations.

8. Black Backed Jackal

Although the sound of a jackal may not be one you can immediately call to mind, the memories of it will return as soon as your ear is again tuned into the African bushveld. The sounds include yelling, yelping, woofing, whining, growling and cackling. When calling to other jackals, they emit an abrupt yelp followed by a succession of shorter yelps. Those in the same family will answer each others calls, while ignoring those of strangers. When threatened by predators, they yell loudly.

Where can I hear this sound? These adaptable creatures are found across a range of habitats, including grasslands and savannahs. You can hear their calls in countries like South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.

9. Spotted Hyena

what does safari song sound like

The spotted hyena is also known as the laughing hyena because the famous chatter actually sounds like a human laughing hysterically. Hyenas have very distinctive vocalizations, with over 11 different sounds recorded. This “laugh” is used during times of nervous excitement or submission to a dominant hyena. The "whoop" is a call that can be heard from far away and is used to find cubs, claim territory, or bring the clan together. Groans and squeals are used to greet each other. Other sounds include grunting, growling, and yelling. Besides communicating with each other, hyenas will use their calls and scent marks to mark their territory.

Where can I hear this sound? Spotted hyenas thrive in a variety of habitats, from savannahs to forests. Countries with healthy hyena populations include Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.

10. Hadeda Ibis

what does safari song sound like

The Hadeda Ibis has a distinctively loud, penetrating and recognisable haa-haa-haa-de-dah call that is often heard when the birds are flying or when startled, hence the name, Hadeda. This distinctive call punctuates the beginning of African days, making every dawn a special symphony.

Where can I hear this sound? You can hear their distinctive calls in places like South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, particularly near water bodies and grasslands.

Meaning of Safari by Serena

"Safari" by Serena is a song celebrating love and the feeling of motion and adventure that comes with it. The lyrics describe the feeling of finding someone you're immediately interested with and then being swept away in the moment, being unafraid to do something different or to just let go and enjoy the moment. The song encourages the listener to take a chance and to be daring, to just let the moment take them away and enjoy the thrill of unexpected love and adventure that can come with it. The chorus reinforces this idea by effectively asking the listener to "Move that body," as if to suggest the excitement of the new found connection with someone, and to feel like they are in a "safari" of sorts to explore the unknown.

Taylor Swift

Every song on Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department is a work of art and a masterpiece. Let’s get that out of the way first.

But, with 31 dense tracks, there’s bound to be some that stand out for various reasons. After all, Swift is known for her storytelling, lyrical prowess and narrative-driven pop songs.

So, for fun and to encourage conversation, The Hollywood Reporter’ s resident Swiftie is ranking all 31 songs off Swift’s latest record.

"Cassandra"

Our list starts with the day-dream lullaby “Cassandra.” It’s just one of a few songs on this album to deal with concepts and feelings of betrayal. It references the figure Cassandra from Greek mythology, known literally as “she who entangles men,” who was sabotaged by Apollo.

In “Peter,” Swift says goodbye to a former partner whom she thought she would be with forever. “Said you were gonna grow up, then you were gonna come find me,” the lyrics say. It’s a melancholy reference to Peter Pan, who never did grow up.

"Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus"

This song tells the story of a fraught relationship that ended with infidelity, either physical or emotional. Swift references Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus as a way to say she doesn’t care who the other person in her relationship was, illustrating an indifference stronger than hatred.

"How Did It End?"

Swift seemingly references her ex Joe Alwyn on this track, which features lyrical parallels to another song she’s written about that fading relationship, “You’re Losing Me.” She questions and interrogates the slow burnout of their partnership. The line “sitting in a tree, d-y-i-n-g” strikes hard as a parody of the school-age taunt, “k-i-s-s-i-n-g.”

"Fresh Out the Slammer"

On this track, Swift laments about the desire we have to run back to someone we know isn’t good for us when a relationship ends. She alludes to being set free of a stifling relationship and running toward another one: “Fresh out the slammer, I know who my first call will be to.”

"The Bolter"

“The Bolter” tells the story of a woman whom you can never get too close to: “Excellent fun ’til you get to know her.” She always runs away. It’s one of Swift’s most narrative-driven songs on the album.

“Robin,” a piano ballad anchored by the hook “Way to go, tiger,” evokes feelings of childhood, in similarity to former Swift tracks like “The Best Day” and “seven.”

"Clara Bow"

The titular Clara Bow was one of Hollywood’s first icons. She was a sex symbol and a socialite. The song also references Stevie Nicks, and Swift name-drops herself. It’s an infectious hook with a story rooted in the entertainment industry. Swift explained the song is “a commentary on what I’ve seen in the industry that I’ve been in over time.”

"The Tortured Poets Department"

The title track of the album is one of the songs that seems to most directly reference Swift’s past relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, a main character on this record. It does not paint a positive depiction, to say the least. It is, of course, notable that this song gives the album its name. And, yes, Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist.

"The Prophecy"

One of the most heartbreaking songs on the record, “The Prophecy,” sees Swift lamenting the slow fading of a former relationship. She’s in a desperate state: “Please, I’ve been on my knees, change the prophecy.” It features some of the strongest lyrical work on the album.

"I Hate It Here"

“I Hate It Here” is an anthem for the dissociators. It’s about going to other worlds to escape. It’s for those of us who turn to movies, music, books and fantastical adventures to get away from reality. It’s blunt and one of the sadder songs on the record (which is saying something).

"Fortnight" (feat. Post Malone)

The lead single off The Tortured Poets Department features an addictive hook and a major boost from Post Malone. There’s no denying that the poignant and piercing lyric “I love you, it’s ruining my life” has been stuck in the heads of many since the album dropped. It’s the most consumer-facing track and can be thought of as the “cardigan” of this record. An instant smash and another Swift classic, accompanied by a stunning video with cinematography by Killers of the Flower Moon DP Rodrigo Prieto.

"The Albatross"

Swift assumes her man-eater persona on this track: “She’s the Albatross, she is here to destroy you…She’s the death you chose, you’re in terrible danger.” It’s reminiscent of the identity she’s previously taken on for songs like “Blank Space.” It reads as a warning to Travis Kelce , or any future partners.

"The Alchemy"

Speaking of Kelce, “The Alchemy” is widely assumed to be one of the few tracks on Tortured Poets that references Swift’s current relationship with the Super Bowl-winning athlete. It’s about undeniable chemistry and when your relationship just feels right. “Who are we to fight the alchemy?”

"I Look in People’s Windows"

At just over two minutes, this is one of the shortest songs on the album. But darn if it isn’t catchy. It casts Swift as a peeping tom of sorts, watching like a ghost through people’s windows, seeking community and a former lover. It’s got that folklore/evermore cozy cabin vibe and is best enjoyed by candlelight.

"So Long, London"

Arguably the saddest song on the record, on “So Long London,” it’s heavily speculated that Swift is saying goodbye to Alwyn. It cuts deep as an epilogue to songs off her Lover album, like “London Boy” and “Cornelia Street.” In saying goodbye to her six-year relationship, she also parts ways with one of her favorite cities. It’s the closing of a chapter of her life.

What was that about the saddest song on the record? “loml” once again is heavily speculated to be about Swift’s parting with ex-boyfriend Alwyn. The anagram has a double meaning, standing for “love of my life,” which Swift says she was told “a million times,” as well as “loss of my life,” referencing the relationship as one of her greatest loves.

"I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"

On this song, Taylor Swift puts a melody to a common millennial mantra: “I can fix him; no really, I can.” It’s a country-twinged track all about diving head-first into that relationship that you know will end up bad. It’s a siren song about reckless abandon and bad choices.

"My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"

One of the few songs that Swift penned solely by herself on Tortued Poets , “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys” is the type of poppy earworm we know we can rely on Swift for. It’s about the hindsight of knowing a relationship wasn’t built to last. It paints the “boy” in question as an immature child, one who would rather knock over his building blocks than try to spell with them.

"The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"

Ouch. A standout song on the record, “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” pulls no punches when reading down its subject. Heavily rumored to be about Healy, Swift paints the picture of a hopeless, pill-obsessed loser who wrought her emotions and took her on a dark journey. It’s perhaps the cruelest and most direct Swift has ever been on one of her breakup/revenge songs. The subject of this song may never recover.

"The Manuscript"

Swift likes to end her albums with an epilogue of sorts. As the final track on ‘The Anthology’ version of Tortured Poets , “The Manuscript” serves as just that. It symbolizes the closing of a book and the turning of a new page. It sees Swift looking back on a very old relationship (Jake Gyllenhaal? John Mayer?). She shares a new perspective on the affair as she’s grown older. It further cements Swift as one of our generation’s greatest storytellers, acting as both the closing of a narrative and the opening of another. It, almost literally, closes the book on the Tortured Poets era.

"So High School"

Tortured Poets is a heavy album, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t bright spots. “So High School” is one of the most upbeat, feel-good songs on the album. It’s a perfect callback to those ‘80s-‘90s dream pop tracks, the kind you’d listen to walking down the hallway between periods. It’s got the sweeping feeling of songs like “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds or “Head Over Heels” by Tears for Fears. “You know how to ball, I know Aristotle.” It’s a lovey-dovey tribute to those good old days and seems to reference Swift’s relationship with Kelce. It’s one of the happiest moments of the record.

"Imgonnagetyouback"

Swift and Olivia Rodrigo have a dialogue going between their songs. Rodrigo famously admired Swift and even sampled “Cruel Summer” for her song “deja vu.” Now, Swift has released a song with a similar theme to Rodrigo’s “get him back,” playing with the double meaning of revenge and rekindling. Swift’s take is catchy, and you’ll find it running through your head as you do the dishes.

"I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"

A standout and celebratory track, “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” shines as an upbeat anthem for staying strong during your toughest moments. It evokes songs like “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson. It’s a flex for Swift, where she highlights her flawless performances during the Eras Tour , all while going through a breakup. “I was grinning like I’m winning, I was hitting my marks,” Swift brags. On Spotify and YouTube, the song is accompanied by footage from the Eras Tour. This one could break out as a single, with the chance to hit it big like “Shake It Off.”

"thanK you aIMee"

“I built a legacy that you can’t undo.” Swift does what she does best on this song — folk music and revenge. The capitalized letters in the name of this track all but fully confirm that this song is directed at Kim Kardashian, and it seems to address Swift’s past beef with the reality star and her former husband. It unpacks the feelings Swift had at that time and drags back up the fight that first took center stage during Swift’s reputation era. It’s got the vibe of Swift’s “betty.” Watch out for this one on any tour dates. Who could resist a stadium of people shouting “f–k you, aimee!” (read: “f–k you, Kim Kardashian”).

"The Black Dog"

As for stadium bangers, “The Black Dog” may just be the black sheep in that category. The song starts out slow and builds to an epic, screeching chorus: “Old habits die screaming!” It’s bound to be a moment where Swifties go wild when they hear it live. The song is heavily rumored to peel back the layers of Healy and how he disappointed Swift almost instantly.

Using a fantastical alien abduction as a metaphor, “Down Bad” is a catchy lament about not getting what you want. It’s about longing for someone and how that can lead to a depression. It’s got some of the best Swift bridges on the album, which automatically catapults it toward the top.

"Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?"

Swift takes on the witchy persona we’ve seen on albums like evermore on this standout track, “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” It’s got a hook that, once again, needs to be shouted by a crowd in a stadium. Preferably howled at the moon in unison. It paints her as a sorceress and a monster. It’s sinister and threatening. Catch us playing this one on repeat at our Halloween parties.

"Guilty as Sin?"

Another song that is heavily rumored to be about Healy, referencing one of his favorite songs ,“The Downtown Lights.” “Guilty as Sin” finds Swift feeling unfaithful, questioning if thoughts in her head qualify as infidelity. It’s catchy as hell, a seamless blend of pop and country-folk. “I keep recalling things we never did … without ever touching his skin, how can I be guilty as sin?” It’s a tapestry of complicated emotions, woven to melodic perfection.

"Florida!!!"

It was inevitable that a Taylor Swift and Florence Welch collaboration would reach the top of this list. In a partnership that feels so natural it’s almost a shock it hasn’t happened before, “Florida!!!” goes big, anthemic and loud. It’s a read of the American dream, the American journey and the American experience. It’s existential and haunting. We can only hope for more collaborations from this duo. Taylor x Florence x Bon Iver, when?

"But Daddy I Love Him"

The top track on our list encompasses everything Tortured Poets is about and, more largely, encapsulates that classic Taylor Swift song feeling. Again, heavily rumored to be about Healy, the song addresses Scott Swift’s disapproval of his daughter’s relationship with The 1975 singer. It’s sweeping and glowing and gives that feeling of reckless abandon one might get from running across an open field at sunset. It’s a shimmer of light on one of Swift’s darkest-feeling entries to date and deserves to be blasted with the windows down on a sunny day.
