Travel time from Sydney to Perth

How long does it really take to fly from Sydney to Perth? Here's a sample itinerary for a commercial flight plan. If you want to know the total travel time to reach Perth, you need to include time at the airports. Eventually, you'll be able to customize this itinerary to select other nearby airports and choose your preferred airline.

Tuesday, 1:48 pm :  start in Sydney drive for about 17 minutes most airlines recommend you get to the airport at least 60 minutes before your flight, so arrive by 2:30 pm at the latest

2:20 pm :  get your boarding pass and go through TSA security allow enough time for long security lines during busy travel seasons or holidays, and prepare for the wait time

2:50 pm :  arrive at the gate once you're ready to board, you can get something to eat in the airport or just relax near the gate

3:05 pm :  prepare for boarding check your boarding pass for your group number or listen to the gate agent as they announce boarding, some airlines require you to be in the boarding area 10-15 minutes before departure or risk losing your seat

3:20 pm :  board Jetstar Airways Pty Limited flight you can scroll down to view other airlines that fly this route

3:30 pm :  this is your scheduled departure time but remember flights can be delayed, so take that into account it takes the plane an average of 15 minutes to taxi to the runway

3:45 pm :  wheels up! take-off from SYD fly for about 4.5 hours in the air

6:21 pm (local time) :   Perth International (PER) Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney so the time in Sydney is actually 8:21 pm taxi on the runway for an average of 15 minutes to the gate

6:36 pm (local time) :  arrive at the gate at PER deboard the plane, and claim any baggage if you're renting a car, check if you need to take a shuttle to car rental agency, otherwise you can ride in a cab, limo, or Uber for about 20 minutes to your destination

6:56 pm (local time) :  arrive in Perth

Total travel time: 7 hours

How far is Perth from Sydney? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 2,049 miles or 3297 km

Flight time: 4 hours, 36 minutes

Compare this to a whole day of commercial travel with the airports and waiting in line for security, which ends up taking a total of 7 hours, 8 minutes .

Flying private is roughly 1.8x faster , and saves you about 3 hours in your total travel time.

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. The flight itinerary at the top of the page takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

What We Know About the Global Microsoft Outage

Airlines to banks to retailers were affected in many countries. Businesses are struggling to recover.

By Eshe Nelson and Danielle Kaye

Eshe Nelson reported from London and Danielle Kaye from New York.

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, were disrupted on Friday by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users.

In many countries, flights were grounded, workers could not get access to their systems and, in some cases, customers could not make card payments in stores. While some of the problems were resolved within hours, many businesses, websites and airlines continued to struggle to recover.

What happened?

A series of outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark.

The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike , an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are intended to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

But Microsoft had also said there was an earlier outage affecting U.S. users of Azure, its cloud service system. Some users may have been affected by both. Even as CrowdStrike sent out a fix, some systems were still affected by midday in the United States as businesses needed to make manual updates to their systems to resolve the issue.

George Kurtz, the president and chief executive of CrowdStrike, said on Friday morning that it could take some time for some systems to recover.

How a Software Update Crashed Computers Around the World

Here’s a visual explanation for how a faulty software update crippled machines.

What was affected?

It is more apt to ask what was not affected. Everything from airlines to banks to health care systems in many countries was hit.

In Australia, passengers were stuck in long lines at Sydney airport as information screens went blank, and programming was disrupted at the national broadcaster. Airports in Britain, Germany and Taiwan had long delays at check-ins and flights were delayed or canceled. At an airport in South Korea, handwritten boarding passes were being slowly handed out.

Flights continued to be disrupted at some U.S. airports into the morning because of the cascading effect of flight delays and cancellations. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that ground stops and delays would be “intermittent” at some airports as airlines grapple with residual technology issues.

The outage affected emergency 911 lines in multiple states, the U.S. Emergency Alert System said on social media — but most if not all of the emergency system problems appeared to be resolving themselves by midmorning.

A few hospitals in Germany said they would cancel elective procedures; and in Britain, some doctors in the National Health Service were unable to gain access to systems. Kaiser Permanente, a medical system that provides care to 12.6 million members in the United States, said all of its hospitals’ systems were affected, and it activated backup systems to keep caring for patients.

At some banks, including JPMorgan Chase, there were delays in processing trades because bankers could not log into their work systems. TD Bank, the 10th largest in the United States, said customers complained that they could not access their online accounts.

But the problems were not uniform. London’s Heathrow Airport said that its flights were still operating. The London Stock Exchange said that it could not publish news updates but the exchange, where trades take place, was working as normal. The auction system at the Norwegian central bank was briefly interrupted, but other major central banks, the European Central Bank and Bank of England, said there was no effect on their systems.

In some cases, issues were resolved relatively quickly. In Ukraine, Sense Bank and the mobile operator Vodafone reported brief problems with their services. At Dubai International Airport, two airlines switched to alternative systems, allowing operations to resume.

Major grocery chains in the United States appeared largely unaffected, with most stores operating as usual. But the world’s biggest logistics companies, including United Parcel Service and FedEx, did report disruptions, causing delivery delays in some regions. A spokesman for UPS said the company’s computer systems in the United States and Europe were affected.

Who’s to blame?

Mr. Kurtz said CrowdStrike took responsibility for the software bug, sent in a system update, that caused the outage. He said in a post on X that Mac and Linux users were not affected.

The incident was not a cyberattack, Mr. Kurtz said, adding that customers remain “fully protected.” But Mr. Kurtz warned on NBC’s “Today” show that the fix could take some time to put in place.

“We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption,” Mr. Kurtz said. Microsoft offered suggestions to users to help resolve the issue, including restoring backup systems.

While CrowdStrike is at fault for the software bug, J.J. Guy, chief executive of cybersecurity company Sevco, said poor resiliency of Microsoft’s operating system is to blame for extent of the damage.

“Bugs happen all the time and are unavoidable, the result of business complexity and technology,” Mr. Guy said. “But this became a catastrophic incident because of the remediation procedures. The resiliency of the operating system was not sufficient to mitigate the risk of that.”

Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on its operating system. The company’s chief executive, Satya Nadella, said in a post on X that Microsoft is working with CrowdStrike to offer customers technical guidance and bring systems back online.

Under Analysis: Qantas Looks Into Nonstop Flights To Seattle, Las Vegas, & Chicago

  • Qantas eyeing Seattle, Chicago & Las Vegas for new international routes, aiming to monopolize them
  • Chicago viewed as a Midwest gateway, Las Vegas targeted due to rising Australian visitor numbers
  • Plans for Qantas growth depend on analyzing demand, remaining agile & prioritizing routes with the best returns.

Red-tailed Qantas Airways has identified that a number of new international destinations are high on the carrier's agenda, with the return of the Airbus A380, the new Boeing 787, and the long-awaited Airbus A350-1000 destined to join the carrier's fleet . The airline, which has stated that they usually analyze around ten markets at a time, has noted that five are incredibly high on the carrier's agenda.

During a recent media briefing at Airbus Headquarters in Toulouse, Cam Wallace, Qantas International's Chief Executive Officer, stated:

We generally have 10 markets under analysis and five under deep analysis.

With this, he revealed that Seattle, Chicago, and Las Vegas are firmly on the carrier's wishlist.

Qantas Returns To Paris Charles de Gaulle With Nonstop Boeing 787 Dreamliners

After an absence of 20 years, Qantas is back in Paris as it keeps on whetting the appetite of Australians for the launch of Project Sunrise.

Get all the latest airline route news right here

Wallace emphasized that Seattle has remained high on the carrier's wish list for some time, given the strength of home carriers at the Washington State airport. It is a home base for Oneworld member Alaska Airlines, and American Airlines has extensive operations at the northwestern airport. Wallace told Executive Traveller : “We have a good relationship with them, and they’re very keen for us to fly there.” Should Qantas commence flights to Seattle, it would cover a similar distance as the current Sydney-Vancouver flight that the airline already operates.

The airline sees Seattle as a logical choice for its next US destination, given that it is home to several US tech titans and also the base for many Arctic and Alaskan cruises. The Pacific Northwest has several unique outdoor attractions, and as it is an Alaska Airlines hub , it could provide sufficient inbound tourist numbers to go down under.

Heading east, Chicago is another destination the carrier aspires to operate to . Qantas had already planned to commence a direct Brisbane to Chicago link in April 2020; however, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought the airline's plans to a dramatic halt, and the carrier is yet to re-launch the route. Wallace has reiterated that Chicago would be an excellent gateway to the Midwest, given it's a central hub for American Airlines. Air New Zealand is a close competitor to Qantas, which has already launched a direct link from its base in Auckland to Chicago. However, these flights are now suspended until late 2025 .

Viva Las Vegas

Sin City is yet another destination Qantas has its eyes firmly set on. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has reported that Australia represents the second-highest number of overseas visitors on average. In 2023, 264,900 Aussies visited the city of Nevada, an increase of 74.2% compared to 2022. The ever-growing range of conference facilities, shows, nightlife, and other attractions lured many.

Currently, most travelers from Australia to Las Vegas are required to transit from other North American gateways, such as Dallas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. While a quarter of a million Australian travelers to Las Vegas is impressive, it is still behind the record set in 2019, when 358,000 Australians visited the city.

Will We Ever See A Flight Longer Than Qantas' Project Sunrise?

Qantas is planning to set a new record for the world's longest regularly scheduled flight with Project Sunrise. Project Sunrise will see the airline connecting London to Sydney with non-stop flights using specially modified Airbus A350s. These flights will take up to 20 hours. But do you think we will ever see longer flights in the future?

Have you heard the Simple Flying podcast recently?

Hello Greece

Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Hudson has identified another European destination as a possible addition from Perth in the near future. The carrier recently launched its long-awaited connection to Paris Charles de Gaulle in time for the Olympics . This route will complement its year-round service to London Heathrow and seasonal service to Leonardo da Vinci–Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Athens could be the next European gateway to join the Qantas network. Hudson emphasized this to Executive Traveler:

Every person I speak to at the moment is going to Greece, she told media at the launch of Qantas direct Perth-Paris flights, and sees more red-tailed Boeing 787s as well as A350-1000s using Perth as a springboard to Europe."

Hudson noted that any new route would depend on aircraft availability and the reality of a fleet that is 'currently short' to fulfill Qantas' overall ambitions. Historically, Qantas has served Greece before in a connecting capacity and once served Frankfurt via Singapore. However, the ability to operate these routes long-haul is very appealing for travelers.

An agile approach to growth

Qantas continues to be adaptable when studying potential destinations and city pairs, noting that it keeps a close eye on demand. Should numbers not stack up, the airline must quickly adapt and look at other destinations. Given that all of the current routes high on the airline's wish list would see Qantas as the only carrier operating directly, it would allow the airline to hold a monopoly on these routes. Wallace clarified this perspective:

Weve got to be really thoughtful and quite purposeful about how we deploy that capacity, but also agile. If stuff doesnt work, were not going to just kind of keep going. Weve got to have to move the capital where we see the best returns."

Qantas has already shown previous examples of making network adjustments, with changes in its Asian network throughout the pandemic and post-pandemic thaw, where it reduced capacity to China and introduced new routes to Bangalore and Delhi.

These are the most stressful airports in Australia according to new study

air travel time from perth to sydney

A stressful airport experience isn't the ideal way to start a holiday. And it turns out some Aussies have it worse than others when it comes to their local airport experience.

Travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com have released their 2024 Stressful Airport Index which analyses different anxiety-inducing factors to reveal the best and worst airports to travel from.

Airports were ranked based on passenger numbers, driving distance from the city centre, number of destinations that can be flown to, the cost of parking and overall satisfaction score.

Here are the top 10 most stressful in the country right now.

10. Canberra Airport

10. Canberra Airport

Sitting in 10th place means Canberra is one of the best airports to fly to and from in the country. It also had a satisfaction score of 85 on FlightRadar, the highest out of all of the airports.

When it comes to passenger movement, Canberra is one of the least busiest with 2,711,821 annual passengers. This could be due to planes flying from the airport only travelling to 12 destinations in total.

9. Adelaide Airport

9. Adelaide Airport

In ninth place is Adelaide Airport. With 30 destinations to fly to, parking is cheap at only $96 per week. The passenger count sits at 7,522,215, and the airport has a FlightRadar score of 83.

8. Townsville Airport

8. Townsville Airport

Townsville Airport in Far North Queensland has the lowest passenger numbers in the top 10 (1,649,059) but will still charge travellers $160 for parking for a week.

7. Hobart Airport

7. Hobart Airport

In seventh place is Hobart Airport in Tasmania. It also has a low number in terms of passenger movement, at 2,532,369, and only offers travel to eight destinations in total, the lowest of any major airports in the country.

6. Cairns Airport

6. Cairns Airport

The hub of tropical North Queensland, Cairns sits in sixth place for stress levels.

Despite having less passenger movement throughout the year (4,196,503) parking is up there with the most expensive at $141 a week.

5. Sydney Airport

5. Sydney Airport

Australia's busiest airport is Sydney Airport. With 97 destinations to choose from and 35,585,080 annual passengers, it is the main gateway for people in and out of the country.

Despite this, Sydney sits in fifth spot overall and had one of the cheapest parking options available at $115 for one week.

4. Perth Airport

4. Perth Airport

Just escaping the top three, Perth Airport is considered the fourth most stressful airport in Australia.

Parking costs average $130 per week, and 11,202,820 passengers move through annually.

3. Melbourne Aiport

3. Melbourne Aiport

Melbourne Airport has been named as the third most stressful airport in the country.

It is the second busiest airport with 30,651,495 annual passengers and is also a bit of a distance to drive from the CBD.

2. Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta)

2. Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta)

Gold Coast Airport in Queensland ranked as the second most stressful airport despite only flying to 15 destinations.

This airport is also a 27 kilometre drive from the city centre, the furthest out of all the airports in the index.

When it comes to the cost of parking, Gold Coast Airport ranked as the second most expensive, setting travellers back $165.

1. Brisbane Airport

1. Brisbane Airport

The study found Brisbane to be the most stressful airport due to having the third highest number of annual passengers (19,793,118) and over 70 destinations to fly to.

Brisbane Airport was also the most expensive for parking, costing travellers $214 for one week.

Qantas launches first ever non-stop flights from Australia to Paris

Qantas launches direct Perth to Paris flights

Direct flights from Perth to Paris are touching down in the city of love.

It’s the first time ever Australia and France have been connected non-stop.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Qantas launches direct Perth to Paris flights.

The flights, which take about 17 hours, launched in time for the Olympics and will operate four times a week during the games and for the rest of the European summer.

The service — powered by Qantas’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which was specially designed for long-haul travel — will run three times a week after that.

7NEWS travelled as a guest of Qantas on the world’s sixth-longest flight.

Going non-stop shaves about three hours off the journey time.

Qantas has launched direct flights from Perth to Paris.

Qantas chief executive Vanessa Hudson said there had been a “significant increase” in passengers wanting to fly direct on long-haul flights, cutting out stopovers “wherever possible”.

“Our direct flights from Perth to London and Rome have some of the highest customer satisfaction on our international network,” Hudson said.

“With these new flights, our customers can depart Perth in the evening and arrive in Paris in time to enjoy brunch overlooking the Eiffel Tower.”

The WA government says the non-stop link will add more than 75,000 seats between Europe and Perth annually.

Last year, more than 23,000 French visitors landed in Western Australia.

“Not only is this an important link between WA and France, it will also provide better connections for dozens of other European destinations, boosting tourism opportunities across the region,” Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti said.

“Reconnecting WA with the rest of the world has been a major focus for us since borders reopened post-pandemic.”

Travelling non-stop shaves about three hours off the journey time.

Qantas now has three non-stop Europe destinations: Rome, London and Paris.

We have come a long way since the first Europe flights in 1947. Back then, Sydney to London took four days and seven stops.

The next challenge for Qantas is direct flights from Europe to Australia’s east coast.

Called Project Sunrise, they are still two years away, delayed by aircraft delivery and certification.

Top 5 airlines serving from Sydney to Perth

Enjoyed the comfort of the seats, slight delay to departure time but prompt takeoff and landing.

It asks about entertainment tho it’s not applicable. 10/10 for Rex 👌🏻

Not sure how to answer on the entertainment as there wasn’t any.. Comfort, I wasn’t comfortable as I was on the window side and a morbidly obese man sat in the middle and eased out into my space. I had sciatica so I wasn’t able to move much to get comfortable. Food wise I have a wheat allergy and asked if there was a gluten free option and was given a Byron bay cookie which was lovely tho it wasn’t wheat free. Not to worry. I wasn’t expecting there to be any appropriate snacks for me anyhow. The staff were very generous with the snacks and their concern for the passengers. The staff were amazing tho. Truly amazing ! One of the staff must have noticed my discomfort and helped me out to stand in the back of the plane to stretch which I really appreciated. I would fly with REX again without hesitation. Thank you very much. It was my first flight with you and I look forward to my return flight home on Tuesday. Best wishes to your company 👌🏻

All good, was a one hour flight so no food or entertainment which was expected

Rex is an underrated airline. Its my first time flying them and they were fantastic. the only things that annoyed me about my flight were things other passengers did so it was nothing i or REX could change

Really enjoyed flying with Rex the boarding and booking baggage on was easier than most. I will beat using Rex next time.

On time and a quick flight and staff vert good

2 hrs + delay! Times kept changing, Onboard menu was half depleted, Entertainment wifi was N/A Overall very frustrating flight and I never slate Virgin.

Virgin Australia passed this flight onto Alliance, so my rating and comments are based on my experience with crew, aircraft and available options. Alliance only offers drinks which consisted of tea, coffee and water, free of charge. There was no on board entertainment. The aircraft seating although narrow accommodated my 6 foot 2 body with little discomfort.

When the flight is full out would be good to allow the use of the front toilet as well as the rear. Otherwise it was an uneventful flight.

When I made the booking I was not aware I had to book our checked baggage separately. As we had no checked luggage booking, I had to pay A$120 per bag (total 2 bags) so you can imagine I was not pleased. I am an experienced traveller so something needs to be done to improve the booking app,

Toasties not available (only GF option). Hot drinks not able to be served No usb charging port

Flight departed in time and arrived on time, no issues at all.

Boarding took place at the front and back. Weight of luggage was unclear and cost an arm and a leg.

The flight between Canberra and Coolongatta passed very quickly and was comfortable. The crew were very efficient and helpful. The boarding process is a bit slow and not done by rows. Overall, Virgin does a fairly good job.

The seats are so uncomfortable. The food doesn't exist unless you pay. Disappointed

This time is good . Don’t cancel flight with out early notice .

Plane a little late departing, but not an issue. The pilots humour when he said “I will try to make up some time…. I know a few short cuts to Adelaide” made the passengers chuckle. This is what makes Qantas “Australian”.

I have never had a problem with flying Qantas, so this flight was the same as any other.

After British Airways cancelled my London to Sydney and Virgin Australia refused to refund, there was no ways I would try Virgin Australia again, so it was Qantas - what a good flight experience. So much easier to get off an international flight and get a local flight without having to add extra amounts for baggage

The flight was delayed by 1.5 hours and most of the flights bags were not on the flight. Have also had no communication from QANTAS

Food was great. Customer Service not so much! Flight Delays.

The plane was delayed about 3 hours so anything else is immaterial

It was so hot on the plane mixed with being quite turbulent and a rough landing. We all felt very nauseous for hours afterwards. Crew were lovely though.

For a long haul, the flight was good. We left an hour late due to a seat in business class not working. But they made up time and we still got in on time or even early thanks to tailwinds. The crew was friendly. The meals were okay, nothing special.

Internet on internation flights is a basic comodity. Very disappointed. Same entertainment that has been on for the past year. Update your content for frequent flyers

No internet on international flights in this dsy and age is bad.

TVs didn’t work, air conditioning didn’t work, flight crew came by one and that was it

It was delayed and no.entertainment unit. Lion group air is giant company with poor record of service.

Boarding was generally quick, staff were friendly and did assist people when needed. The plane wasn't cleaned well with remnants of the last passengers. Tray tables were falling down and back of seats falling apart. The AC was turned up too high and we were all freezing, i was actually shaking uncontrollably until the heating was put back on. No entertainment at all which is hard when travelling with children. Minimal food choices and cash only option. I know its a budget airline but some minor improvements could make a good difference.

Online checkin was a nightmare. They kept popping me into Chinese language site which I can't understand.

The flight take-off was delayed which was fine but the staff seemed pretty over their jobs. The seats are very uncomfortable and the food was pretty average. Overall is was okay.

Note that food has to be purchased in flight. No free food. And no entertainment in flight. So I’ve treated these two items as okay which, in this case, means neutral/not applicable.

My Dad needed assistance to board the plane. The Jetstar staff were excellent with him and made the experience a lot easier😁

No food taken so can't rate also no entertainment so can't rate.

Boarding was easy and unstressful, though the early "final call" was a bit off-putting. The crew were pleasant, and the seats were comfortable. The prices for food and drink were reasonable, apart from tea and coffee, where simple percolated coffee was charged at espresso prices. Deboarding was OK, though some Jetstar passengers appear to have a bad habit of pushing forward from their assigned rows, making it more difficult to get out for passengers that have paid a premium to sit up-front. Jetstar might want to look to address this to stop it from spreading.

I got to the airport earlier than I expected, and they let me change to an earlier flight with no trouble.

It was a super crowded time to travel out of Melbourne, but the flight was OK

Worst experience ever flying Melbourne to Phuket. 5 hours delayed! Didn’t land till 1am in the morning. Staff were rude and unhelpful

Plane was late leaving darwin so we didn’t get home till 1130pm 2nd time in a fortnight that has happened. Hard when you have to work the next day

How science can help combat jet lag

Cabin lighting inspired by the colours of the Australian landscape and grounded in circadian science will be on Qantas’ upcoming Project Sunrise ultra-long-haul flights to help minimise jet lag and improve customer wellbeing.

The design, which includes simulations of sunsets and sunrises, is a result of more than 150 hours of testing in the Airbus Customer Definition Centre in Hamburg, where representatives from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, Qantas, Airbus and Caon Design Studio created and tested hundreds of lighting patterns and sequences in an Airbus A350 cabin mock-up.

Light plays an important part in controlling our body clocks. By manipulating the timing, strength and wavelengths of light during a flight, it is possible to help passengers adapt to a destination’s time zone while in the air and reduce jetlag.

Last year Qantas and the Charles Perkins Centre released preliminary findings from the world-first research flights on how optimising the timing of light, meals, and exercise in-flight affects jetlag. Now they are going one step further by adjusting the colour of light.

“It’s great to see circadian science being translated into practice,” said Associate Professor Sveta Postnova, an expert in circadian modelling at the Charles Perkins Centre and the School of Physics.

“The new lighting scenarios for the A350 were developed to optimise the circadian effects of light at different times during flights while accounting for the light appearance, ambience, safety, and hardware requirements on board. It was a true collaborative effort.”

The trial produced 12 unique lighting scenes specifically for the Project Sunrise flights. They include:

  • “Awake”: A broad-spectrum blue-enriched lighting to help customers adjust to the destination time zone and help them stay alert and awake
  •  “Sunset”: An immersive transition from a daytime mode into dark that moves through the colours of a sunset into a night sky with moonlight and slow cloud effects to relax customers and prepare them for sleep.
  • “Sunrise”: Dynamic lighting effective for a transition from night to day that replicates an Australian sunrise rolling from the front of the cabin to the rear.

The Charles Perkins Centre advised the wavelengths for light that most strongly affect a person’s body clock, using melanopic illuminance.

Regular illuminance is a phenomenon that tells our body how bright light is for our eyes. Melanopic illuminance is the impact of that light on our circadian rhythm. High melanopic illuminance means a lot of light is available to adjust the brain’s central clock.

The researchers found blue-enriched light with high melanopic illuminance helps shift body clocks, and long-wavelength light (such as red) with low melanopic illuminance helps prevent the clock shifting in an undesired direction.

Various scenarios were implemented and tested, and adjusted for eye comfort and appearance, during lighting workshops held in Hamburg.

Lighting sequences are tailored for each flight to help passengers adjust to destination time zones before they land.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace said that the scientifically informed lighting design was another critical component of the preparation for Project Sunrise flights, which will connect Australia’s east coast non-stop with London and New York.

“These world-first flights have been an opportunity for us to work with experts and build on our experience of long-haul flying to rethink the inflight experience with a focus on customer wellbeing and combating the effects of jetlag,” said Mr Wallace.

“One of the things that was clear from the research is the importance of light cycles and brightness in setting the body clock and that was the basis of this testing.

“Combined with the design of the cabins, specialised meal planning, and the movement program, this unique lighting sequence will help improve our customers’ comfort in the air and minimise their jetlag when they arrive at their destination.”

The airline revealed the customised lighting schemes at Airbus’ Airspace Customer Showroom in Toulouse, where a life-size mock-up of the Project Sunrise Wellbeing Zone is being temporarily displayed.
