On The Guided Tour Of Eden Park | NZ’s Biggest Stadium

by Jub | Sep 27, 2018

The Eden Park tour is not exactly the most popular Auckland activity, but for any sports fan it is worth going to.

This post will introduce you to Eden Park and the tour (my experience), some facts I learned, and finish up with an FAQ which is useful to know before you visit.

eden park stadium tour

Thumbs up for Eden Park

Eden Park is New Zealand’s largest stadium with a capacity of 48,500 which depending on where you’re from may seem small. But for New Zealand, it’s enough capacity for all but the biggest events (a.k.a. the All Blacks).

The tour costs $34 for adults which felt a bit steep, but given the average tour has less than 10 people (don’t blame me if you get unlucky) it feels like a bit of a private tour which is awesome. I list all the prices later on.

outside of eden park exterior

The Eden Park Exterior. Certainly doesn’t look like a stadium!

I took the 2 pm tour on a Thursday in September 2018. There was five of us, two Canadians, two fellow kiwis and myself plus the tour guide. Our tour guide Graham said it was an extremely rare event that there were more Kiwis on the tour than international visitors.

If you’ve been on a stadium tour before, you’ll know the drill. You get to go high up in the stadium for the intro, go next to the pitch via the player’s tunnel, visit a corporate box and the coaches box, inside the changing rooms, and to other places unique to the stadium, with plenty of stories told along the way.

Speaking of stories, our guide Graham was brought up visiting Eden Park as a kid, then spent a bunch of years as an employee and now in his 70’s his passion for Eden Park is alive more than ever. This was evident through the gazillion stories he told.

eden park field

If only I had the skills to be able to stand here when the stadium is full…

As great as some of the stories are, they did drag on a bit too long. The tour is scheduled for 90 minutes, which is more than enough, but our group of five didn’t finish until 140 minutes, or 2 hours and 20 minutes later. The number of stories dragged on and I tuned out for the last half hour. I hope the Canadians managed to make it to the airport in time!

Overall I did enjoy the tour, and having a tour guide who knows so much about the place is a great asset over a guide who has zero passion for the stadium or the game (rugby is more of the focus than cricket).

Anyway, there isn/t too much else to say about the tour, so here are 9 fun facts I learned about Eden Park followed by the useful pieces of information you want to know before planning your trip.

9 Things I Learned On The Eden Park Tour

in eden park changing rooms

Just call me Richie

1. The capacity for the stadium was increased to 60,000 for the 2011 Rugby World Cup (to meet IRB requirements). The additional seats are German made by an international events company and can be installed and removed easily. The seats used at Eden Park went on to be used at the London and Rio Olympics.

2. When Eden’s Parks stadiums were being upgraded, contractors came across an unexpected obstacle. A massive rock, which they quickly discovered was upwards of 55 metres long. Realising it was too big to remove, they build around the rock and in the depths of the stadium there is now a room that houses the exposed section of the rock (I couldn’t find any online sources referring to this, but I think I got the facts right!)

3. The stadium is used for both international rugby and cricket. When a cricket match is played, they play on drop-in cricket pitch that is taken care of outside of the stadium. The drop in cricket pitch weighs 20 tonnes and is transported with special machinery in a tray. The time to take out the ‘rugby pitch block’ and insert the cricket pitch? About an hour. The reason for doing so, is the rugby and cricket seasons are overlapping more and more, therefore, there’s no time to prepare a traditional cricket pitch. So at Eden Park, it’s possible to play rugby one day, and cricket the next.

eden park portable pitch

The drop in pitch in its tray on the outer oval

4. For a rugby match, the (rye) grass is cut to 7 ml, and for cricket 3 ml.

5. There are 72 corporate boxes available for purchase at Eden Park with a seating capacity of 16-20 people. The cost of a corporate box ranges from NZ$ 70,000 – 100,000 per year. That allows you to see attend every game at the stadium (sometimes there are exceptions) of which there are about 35 each year. Want catering service in your box? Those costs are extra.

6. Speaking of catering, the kitchen at Eden Park is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere with up to 250 chefs working to prepare food for the biggest events, such as the All Blacks.

eden park monument

This is what I want my statue to be like. Superman!

7. On the outside of Eden Park, it’s hard to miss the canopy that hangs over one side of the stadium. This exterior was not chosen lightly, with the neighbours wellness always a concern when anything happens at Eden Park. The canopy works great for the neighbours as it still lets them get the summer sunlight and warmth.

8. The stadium grounds staff are some of the best in the world, with Turf Manager Blair Christiansen often consulted by other venues worldwide. They also have an epic man cave .

9. Do 35 events each year seem minimal to you? Many of the decision makers at Eden Park agree and would love to host more events. But due to local neighbours putting up regular resistance in regards to disruption to their lives, many events have not been able to proceed .

Kiwi’s love getting creative and in 2017, they turned Eden Park into a 9-hole golf course last year which was a huge success and is a great way to generate revenue for the stadium during the ‘downtimes’. They’re holding the event again in 2018, with other stadiums asking if they can take the concept to their place.

Where Does The Stadium Tour Begin From?

This is something I should have read closer on the website. The tours start at Gate G on the southern side of the stadium, which is on the far side if you’re coming from the CBD direction.

How Much Do Stadium Tour Tickets Cost?

How To Get To Eden Park

motivational message

There are a few of these motivational messages around the stadium

Walking: From Britomart the walk to Eden Park is about 4.5km, though I must say it isn’t a great walk if you’re in a rush. It took me surprisingly long, about an hour following the Google Maps app directions.

Public Transport: The best way to get from the Auckland CBD is by train. You can catch the train from Britomart to Kingsland by catching the WEST line towards Swanson. Once you get off at Kingsland you’re only a 5-minute walk from Gate G.

You can view the latest timetable here .

Driving: If you’re driving yourself, there’s parking available in the Gate G Cark Park P5 off Reimers Ave.

When Are The Stadium Tours?

From Monday to Friday there are two tours daily, at 10 am and 2 pm. On Saturday and Sunday there’s one tour each day at 11 am.

Due to events etc., tours don’t run everyday therefore make sure to scroll to the bottom of the tour page to make sure they are holding tours before you go.

Who Plays Regularly At Eden Park?

Auckland Blues (rugby union) Auckland (rugby union) All Blacks (rugby union) Black Caps (cricket) White Ferns (cricket)

If you decide to take the tour of Eden Park, enjoy! Happy to answer any questions you may have. Jub.

48,500 is not half bad Jub. Especially for New Zealand. I am impressed at that nice little stadium in Christchurch. I think it was bigger before the earthquake. We stayed in Cashmere, up in the hills, and I would pass it to go get frozen yogurt in town.

TOURING NEW ZEALAND’S BIGGEST STADIUM

by Jub | Mar 21, 2020

With a capacity of just under 50,000 people, Eden Park is the biggest stadium in New Zealand where thousands have witnessed some of the country’s most memorable sporting moments .

If you get the chance to watch sport at Eden Park, do it. But the same goes for a tour where you get to go behind the scenes in an awesome learning opportunity and experience (I’m assuming you’re interested in sport).

DETAILS ABOUT THE EDEN PARK STADIUM TOUR

4 stars

The only reason I don’t give this 5-stars is because of the time, it was way too long, 50 minutes longer than expected. Otherwise, the tour was great. We got to go on the field, had a tour guide who loves Een Park, had lots of useful information and we got to go into all the places you expect to go when you’re on a stadium tour. The stories were just too long though. Oh and the tours are overpriced (they were $34 when I went). When 2 : I completed the tour in September 2018

Tour Times 3 : Thursday and Friday 5pm. Weekends at 2pm. (as of June 2020) Price 4 : Adults: $20 Concesson (student/senior): $15 Children (12 & under): $10 Family (2 adults & 2 childern): $50

Official Website

Difficulty 6 : Easy. Obviously there are some stairs involved given it’s a stadium but nothing crazy.

How long does it take? 7 : The tour is scheduled for 90 minutes, but our tour went on for 2h 20 minutes (stories galore).

THE EDEN PARK STADIUM TOUR EXPERIENCE

eden park playing field

On an overcast Thursday afternoon tour in early summer, there were five of us taking the Eden Park tour, led by the passionate Graham. He mentioned the tour groups rarely reach more than 10 people but what surprised me most was that locals rarely took the tour. I thought that as one of the countries most iconic venues it’d get a steady stream of local visitors.

To start Graham took us up high into the stadium where he talked about his experience with Eden Park which tied in nicely with lots of interesting bits of history about Eden Park. He has lived nearby for the majority of his life and was an employee for several years. Now in his 70’s his love for the place is evident, and loved sharing his stories with us. He was truly a wealth of knowledge and I enjoyed learning about the preparation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

In between stories and facts, we moved around the stadium. After starting off with a nice view of the playing field we moved to the pitch through the player’s tunnel, went into the coach’s box, a corporate box, and the changing rooms.

grass on a tray

We also went onto the outer oval which helped us learn about the preparations involved in growing the grass to be used for the various sports. We then got our moment on the field itself, we weren’t allowed to wander too far, but you can definitely let your imagination flow!

With the small group size, there’s no issue with not getting an opportunity for photos which is handy. There’s no museum or anything attached to the stadium so once that was finished, it was time to head back to the CBD.

A few things I learned from the tour:

  • For the 2011 Rugby World Cup they expanded the capacity to 60,000 people to meet the International Rugby Board’s requirements.
  • There’s a room in the stadium that contains a massive rock. It was way too big to move during stadium upgrades so they built around it.
  • They grow cricket pitches outside the stadium. Weighing 20 tonnes, they have a special tray for the pitch that takes just one hour to insert! This enables them to alternate between rugby and cricket easily.
  • The 72 corporate boxes each fit 16-20 people. At a cost of $70,000-100,00/year, they give access to all ~35 events each year (catering not included).
  • There can be up to 250 chefs working inside at any one time inside the Eden Park kitchen, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.

One-off events (e.g. All Blacks matches) and concerts are also held at the stadium throughout the year (full schedule here ).

HOW TO GET TO EDEN PARK

Eden park entrance

Thanks to the great location, you can get there in a few different ways. The official address is: Reimers Avenue, Kingsland, Auckland 1024, New Zealand ( Google Maps link )

Walking: From Britomart you can walk 4.4km to the stadium but it’s not a great walk. Following the Google Maps route, it took me about an hour.

Driving: There’s car parking available at Gate G Cark Park P5 on Reimers Ave.

Public Transport: This is a good option if you’re in downtown Auckland . You can catch the WEST line (towards Swanson) from Britomart to Kingsland.

ALTERNATIVES TO THE EDEN PARK TOURS

sitting inside the changing rooms is one of the highlights of the eden park tours

Maintaining a professional sports stadium year-round is an expensive affair. Eden park staff are keenly aware of the fact they usually only have 3-0-40 professional events a year. So what they’ve done is begun creating alternative experiences that the public can enjoy, beyond attending games, events and taking the stadium tour. The offers include:

  • Haka on the park
  • A rooftop tour
  • Glamping (yes, actually)
  • Zip-lining (coming soon)

Let me know if you take the Eden Park stadium tour or other experiences! I’d love to hear your thoughts.

For more than one hundred years, Eden Park has been the home of Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby. To ensure the venue’s continued success, the Eden Park Trust has revealed its vision for the future of New Zealand’s national stadium – Eden Park 2.0.

Eden Park CEO, Nick Sautner, said:

Eden Park 2.0 delivers a world-class, multi-purpose, hybrid stadium. It’s a venue where New Zealand can continue to make its mark on the world, a hub for sporting excellence, a state-of-the-art entertainment centre and a destination for fans from across the world. Eden Park has always been, and will continue to be, a community asset for Tamaki Makaurau and a strategic asset for Aotearoa, New Zealand. Our 2.0 vision for the future of the national stadium will not only benefit sports and entertainment fans but also contribute to the economic growth of the country. Eden Park is our place; it’s been part of our past for 120 years, and it will be part of our future. Our goal with 2.0 is to create a venue that not only showcases the best sporting, entertainment, cultural and community events but also promotes sustainability and innovation. Offering increased capacity and an enhanced experience for everyone who comes to Eden Park, 2.0 builds on our strong legacy and reputation as an iconic stadium venue, suitable for hosting a diverse range of global and domestic events.

Eden Park CEO, Nick Sautner , will be speaking at ALSD International 2023 , discussing the role stadia play in their communities and the key drivers for Eden Park 2.0.

Speaking about the key drivers, Mr Sautner added:

Eden Park 2.0 is based on several critical elements: modernisation, sustainability, connectivity, and accessibility. Together these transform our globally iconic stadium and future-proofs The Fortress for generations to come.

Eden Park 2.0

Eden Park 2.0 delivers a venue where New Zealand can continue to make its mark on the world, a hub for sporting excellence, a state-of-the-art entertainment centre and a destination for fans from across the world.

Eden Park 2.0 is a venue that not only showcases the best sporting, entertainment, cultural and community events but also promotes sustainability and innovation, with key features of the phased development including:

  • Modernisation: To ensure Eden Park remains at the forefront of sporting and entertainment venues, 2.0 encompasses a new North Stand, upgrades to the East and West stands, enhanced entry promenades, an all-weather retractable roof which guarantees play and broadcast in any weather conditions, multiple fields of play options (suitable for rectangle and oval play formats), different crowd configurations and capacities, new function and entertainment spaces and amenities to enhance the experience for everyone.
  • Sustainability: A key priority for Eden Park is environmental sustainability, and we will incorporate our commitment to reducing the country’s carbon footprint into the design and construction. Current initiatives include the installation of our new LED lights, our community refugee garden, the Eden Park beehives and honey, our community compost centre, spectator waste management practices and new EV charging technologies.
  • Connectivity: Improved transport connections, including the CRL and proposed light rail network, will provide enhanced accessibility for fans travelling to and from Eden Park from all around Auckland.
  • Accessibility: Eden Park is our place, and we remain committed to making it accessible for everyone to enjoy events. Eden Park 2.0 will continue to meet the needs of all fans, including those with disabilities, by incorporating accessible seating, restrooms, and other amenities.

ALSD International 2023  is being hosted at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, October 9-10. O ptimising revenue through New Builds, Renovations & Service  Expansions is the  key focus of this industry-leading event, with architecture & design, fan experience, hospitality, premium seating, sustainability and technology taking centre stage.

Mr Sautner added:

A modern, sustainable, connected, and accessible national stadium will attract more events and visitors to the area, creating new opportunities for local businesses and communities. As a city of 1.6m and a country of 5m people, it is critical to have both broad national and regional stadium strategies, which are aligned and coordinated. This will ensure we have multi-purpose, hybrid venues capable of attracting and hosting a wide range of international and national sporting, entertainment, cultural and community events in Aotearoa, New Zealand. The Eden Park 2.0 vision is a cost-effective solution to help achieve this goal. Eden Park will always be part of our future because it’s always been our home. We look forward to working with our community to bring this 2.0 vision to life. Together, we can create a national stadium that represents the best of our country and its people.

With a new North Stand, upgrades to the East and West stands, enhanced entry promenades, a new pedestrian bridge over Sandringham Road, an all-weather retractable roof which guarantees play and broadcast in any weather conditions, multiple fields of play options to accommodate rectangle and oval play formats and cater for different crowd capacities, new function and entertainment spaces, enhanced connectivity, and world-leading innovation, Eden Park will remain at the forefront of sporting and entertainment venues.

Opened: Originally opened in 1981; rebuilt and reopened January 11, 2007

Originally opened in 1981 as part of the Eden Park Community Center on Gus Young Avenue, now known as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, the Eden Park Branch Library includes a covered drive-through at the entrance and a beautifully landscaped courtyard with covered seating area. Designed by Tipton Associates APAC, this 14,026 square foot library replaces the 2,285 square foot building and houses over 55,000 books, 70 magazines, 10 newspapers, and 3,500 videos, DVDs, audiobooks, and CDs.

The library contains a Large Meeting Room with two kitchenettes, capable of holding 93 people, which can be split into two separate rooms. It also has distinct areas for adults, teens, and children, with a special Storytime room, four soft seating areas, and community art gallery space. There are 40 PCs available for public use, including instructional work stations in the meeting room, and one computer with unique equipment and software for use by blind or visually handicapped patrons. Generous seating, study, and work areas can be found throughout the facility for public and staff.

The Library's interior was designed by Traci LaMoyne of LaMoyne Design Associates. The signage, carpentry, and furnishings reflect a "celestial" theme throughout, which compliments the building's use of light and glass.

This branch also includes raised flooring to provide flexibility and facilitate wiring and other future technology needs of the structure, as well as state-of-the-art shelving with attached lighting, a new design feature for the East Baton Rouge Parish Library system.

Free wireless Internet access is available at this branch.

The new Eden Park Branch Library is located on the north side of Greenwell Springs Road, east of the intersection with North Foster Drive, across from the new Capital Middle School at 5131 Greenwell Springs Road.

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Cities , Entertainment

Park “Krasnodar” (unofficially “Galitsky Park”) is a city park with an area of about 23 hectares located next to the stadium of the football club “Krasnodar”, northeast of the center of Krasnodar , one of the fastest developing cities in Russia.

The park was created with funds from businessman Sergei Galitsky and opened on September 28, 2017. More than 2.5 thousand trees are planted in this park: oak, hornbeam, alder, bonsai, poplar, pine, tulip tree, maple, thuja, decorative plum, and one baobab. Park “Krasnodar” on Google Maps . The construction of the park began in the fall of 2016. The project was developed by the German architectural bureau GMP International. In 10 months, during which work was going on, it was possible to create a beautiful recreational facility with many walking paths, ponds, zones for active leisure, and other interesting areas.

The territory of the park is divided into 30 recreation zones for every taste: from walking with children and watching a movie in the open air to practicing active sports. Among them are a summer amphitheater, labyrinths, playgrounds, a cafe, a rope park, a skate park, a climbing wall, a terraced garden, a fountain, an English park, and much more.

All objects of this urbanistic natural complex consist of spirals, bends and hemispherical lines, which are especially noticeable from a height.
