Making your list and checking it twice? Be sure to put at least a couple of them on your “must-dos” list. 

Alamo . You really can’t go to San Antonio and not visit the site of the Alamo , the most-visited landmark in the entire state of Texas. This former Spanish mission was converted into a fortress and home of a famous stand-off in 1836, the year that Texas declared its independence. (If any of your friends back home begged you to bring them a souvenir, you can buy them a Davy Crockett coonskin cap while you’re there.)

Natural Bridge Caverns . Have you ever wanted to go caving? Now’s your chance! The Natural Bridge Caverns are one of Texas’ largest underground networks of caverns. Impress your coworkers at your travel nursing job afterward with your ability to differentiate between a stalactite and a stalagmite.

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park . Plan a visit to the four sites of the San Antonio Missions for a very colorful and in-depth history lesson--and to marvel at the architecture. You can even attend a religious service at the parishes at any of the four missions (Mission San Jose, Mission Concepcion, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada). 

Fiesta! San Antonio . If you’re in the San Antonio area for a travel nursing assignment in the spring, be sure to check out this huge festival .  You could hit something different every single night at the Fiesta! San Antonio and not repeat yourself. Fashion shows, flower shows, bike rides, carnival rides, balls, dance parties, a multicultural festival, races, a mariachi festival…the list goes on and on.

Texas Folklife Festival . And if you’re on assignment in San Antonio in the summer, make plans to attend the Texas Folklife Festival . Usually held in June, this festival showcases Texas’ rich arts and cultural history.  

River Walk . The River Walk is a gorgeous city park along the water in downtown San Antonio that some folks like to compare to the canals in Venice in Italy. And yes, you can take a water taxi or a dinner cruise, but you can also shop or dine at one of the numerous scenic spots along the Walk itself. 

Eat, drink and be merry

Would you be surprised to learn that San Antonio has become a hot culinary destination? Only if you’re not familiar with the city. In fact, the city was designated a “Creative City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO in 2017 and is a proud member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Tex-Mex . Tex-Mex is huge in San Antonio. Or as some folks are starting to call it, Tex-Next . You get all the deliciousness of authentic, traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex food, but you also get a dose of imagination and flair from people who aren’t afraid of a challenge. 

Craft beer. Enjoy a local lager or another favorite type of brew during your off hours from your travel nursing job in San Antonio. You have an ever-expanding number of local options, including small-batch beers, to choose from, too.

Embrace exercise

Travel nurses on assignment in San Antonio can look forward to plenty of recreational pursuits on their off days. Don’t be afraid to look beyond the regular gym or barre studio!

Kayaking . Since San Antonio has relatively mild weather during much of the year, lots of people take advantage of the chance to go canoeing and kayaking . And you have lots of different places to choose from. For example, you can paddle your boat along the San Antonio River from Mission Road to Padres Park, or you can drive about a half-hour out of town and rent a kayak to take out on the San Marcos River. 

Climbing . You can head outdoors and experience an amazing rock-climbing adventure. Or you can make plans to visit a climbing gym to either take a class or do your own thing. If bouldering is your passion, you have lots of options, too. 

RoTenGo . What? RoTenGo is a hybrid of tennis and ping-pong, played on the ground. You can learn how to play or join in a regular game at Labor Street Park.
