PH wins 4 major awards in World Travel Awards 2023 — DOT

The Philippines bagged four major tourism recognitions from the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) 2023, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Tuesday.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines bagged four major tourism recognitions from the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) 2023, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Tuesday.

According to the DOT, the country was once again named the World’s Leading Dive Destination and the World’s Leading Beach Destination, defending its 2022 titles.

For the first time, the country was also conferred with the World’s Leading City Destination for its capital, Manila.

The DOT added that the Philippines was also given the Global Tourism Resilience Award for demonstrating “global leadership, pioneering vision, and innovation to overcome critical challenges and adversity.”

The country was one of the only five countries that received the award, the agency noted in a press release.

The awarding ceremony was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on December 1.

Other titles received by the Philippines in the WTA 2023 included the World’s Leading Dive Resort (Amanpulo), the World’s Leading Fully Integrated Resort (City of Dreams Manila), and the World’s Leading Casino Resort (City of Dreams Manila), according to the WTA website.

DOT Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano and Assistant Secretary Maria Rica Bueno represented Tourism chief Christina Garcia Frasco during the event.

In her message, Frasco said that receiving the Global Tourism Resilience Award was an affirmation of all the agency’s hard work in developing the nation’s tourism industry.

“With these remarkable triumphs, the Philippines reinforces its position as an unparalleled destination, inviting travelers to explore our captivating shores, vibrant underwater realms, and dynamic urban landscapes as they immerse in our culture and heritage and create unforgettable memories with the distinct grace and hospitality of the Filipino people,” she said.

Meanwhile, in his speech, WTA President and founder Graham Cooke commended the Filipinos as the “main asset” of the country’s tourism industry.

“The diversity, the opportunities with sustainability, the beautiful beach resorts, and now the diving [sic], amazing, the beaches, amazing. As I said, the main asset is the people, which a lot of countries in the world don’t have,” he said.

“And it’s the people of the Philippines that make your tourism assets the most amazing. The work ethic, the happiness, the smile, and the hospitality that the Philippines have are global icons,” Cooke added.

Dubbed the Oscars of the travel industry, WTA is a London-based award-giving body established in 1993.

It recognizes excellence in travel and tourism on three levels: national, regional, and global awards in several categories.

The best restaurant in the world is in Peru

In June of this year, the Peruvian restaurant Central was recognized in The World's 50 Best Restaurants as the best in the world. Led by Virgilio Martínez and Pía León, the restaurant, located in Lima's Barranco district, offers various tasting menus based on Peruvian biodiversity.

In addition to this award, Lima enjoys being recognized as the gastronomic capital of Latin America, thanks to its variety, history, flavor, and tradition of its culinary culture.

About the WTAs

The World Travel Awards annually distinguish tourist destinations that have marked excellence in the last year and that are considered a world benchmark in the tourism industry.

Peru is a unique destination in South America because of the great number of experiences that can be achieved here. Enjoying a ceviche, a lomo saltado, rocoto relleno (Peruvian stuffed peppers) or pachamanca, is also possible while observing one of the incredible natural or historical wonders; whichever attraction you choose, your trip in this country will be unforgettable.

Philippines wins “Asia’s Leading Dive Destination” at prestigious World Travel Awards 2023

world travel awards (wta) 2023

MEDIA RELEASE 07 September 2023

CONTACT : CZARINA ZARA-LOYOLA Director, Office of Public Affairs and Advocacy [email protected]

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam —Solidifying its status as the ultimate diving destination in the region, the Philippines has clinched for the fifth consecutive year the Asia’s Leading Dive Destination title at the preeminent World Travel Awards (WTA) Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony 2023.

Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco announced the remarkable feat on Wednesday (Sept. 6), following the WTA Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony 2023 that took place at the GEM Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

“The Philippines’ fifth consecutive win as Asia’s Leading Dive Destination further affirms the unparalleled beauty and megabiodiversity of our country loved by divers and tourists all over the world,” enthused Secretary Frasco, who is a dive advocate and certified diver herself.

The tourism chief added that “this is a testament to the Philippines’ commitment to sustainable tourism development and our strengthened collaboration with tourism stakeholders. From our ridges to our reefs, you will never run out of reasons to Love the Philippines!”

Elevating the Dive tourism portfolio

Under President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s administration, Secretary Frasco, who is a certified diver, has been leading the DOT in elevating the country’s dive tourism industry.

The DOT created the first-ever Dive Committee that will align its dive product development and promotion thrusts with its attached agencies, the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines, and the Philippine Commission for Sports Scuba Diving (PCSSD).

The DOT will likewise convene the country’s national dive stakeholders in the first-ever Philippine Dive Dialogue in Cebu next week to consolidate all the efforts of the national government, local governments, and private sector partners.

Moreover, the DOT, through its infrastructure arm, TIEZA, eyes the installation of additional hyperbaric chambers that will improve scuba diving safety standards in strategic dive locations, such as Dumaguete and Daanbantayan in Cebu, by 2024.

The agency has also launched its own dive expo brand, the Philippine International Dive Expo (PHIDEX), the world’s only dive show that combines a dive travel exchange, a business-to-business (B2B) meeting program, dive conferences and seminars, exhibition booths, and familiarization tours to key and emerging Philippine dive destinations. The fourth edition of PHIDEX is scheduled for February next year.

The Department continuously hosts regional dive-centric events, including the DOT Office of Product and Market Development – Dive Team’s Anilao Underwater Shootout in Batangas, the DIVE7 Festival series by the DOT Region VII office, the Davao Dive Expo by the DOT Region XI office, and the NorthMin Dive by the DOT Region X office —which opened yesterday (Sept. 6)—among others. The Department also extended its support to a multitude of diving initiatives, assessments, and expeditions, including the Cebu Travel Catalogue, the Bohol Loop Dive Expo (BHOLDEX), the 3rd MisOr Dive Festival, Samal Island Dive Seafari, Bay Deep Mati Freediving Festival, and numerous others.

2023 World Travel Awards

DOT Undersecretary Shahlimar Hofer Tamano personally received the WTA Asia’s Leading Dive Destination 2023 trophy, which was awarded based on public votes and validation from the group’s panel of travel professionals. Philippine private tourism stakeholders also bagged notable victories at the WTA Asia & Oceania Gala Ceremony 2023, being named in the following Asian and country categories: Okada Manila (Asia’s Leading Casino Resort), Discovery Shores Boracay (Philippines’ Leading Beach Resort 2023), Travelite Travel and Tours Co. (Philippines’ Leading Destination Management Company 2023), and Seda Hotels (Philippines’ Leading Hotel Group 2023), among others.

Regional edition awardees, along with runners-up and previous year’s winners, are qualified for the WTA’s World edition, which will have its grand awards night in Muscat, Oman in November 2023.

Established in 1993, the WTA is now globally recognized as the “ultimate hallmark of excellence” in the tourism and hospitality industries. The WTA encompasses country awards, regional awards, and world awards.

Chow Kit and Tune Hotel KLIA-klia2 win big at World Travel Awards 2023

Post-pandemic revenge travel has undoubtedly gone big. People are more than willing to go on trips with friends and family to make up for lost time due to the lockdowns, and many are happy to spend on good accommodation and exciting adventures, which ultimately become the determining factors for a great holiday experience.

The hospitality industry, which was badly affected by Covid-19, has seen positive recovery, and hotels and resorts the world over have been upping their game to appeal to hundreds of thousands of eager travellers.

The same can be said for many establishments in Malaysia. The World Travel Awards (WTA) recently identified Tune Hotel Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA-klia2) and The Chow Kit – An Ormond Hotel, as trailblazers in hospitality.

Tune Hotel KLIA-KLIA2 was named Best Airport Hotel 2023 in two categories for Asia and Malaysia, trouncing acclaimed international contenders such as Grand Hyatt Incheon, Radisson Blu Plaza Delhi and Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott.

This year marks the fourth year that Tune has received recognition from WTA since 2019, underscoring the brand’s commitment to excellence and its consistent delivery of exceptional service.

Meanwhile, The Chow Kit – An Ormond Hotel in KL was named Malaysia’s Best Boutique for the third consecutive year, following its grand victory at the Luxury Awards Asia Pacific, where it was picked one of the best city hotels in Malaysia by Travel + Leisure magazine last June.

Starting operations the year before the pandemic, The Chow Kit quickly rose to the top, being crowned Best Hotel Renovation & Restoration and Best Visual Identity at the 2021 Ahead Awards, alongside industry bigwigs such as Aman Resorts, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts and Capella Hotel Group.

Istanbul was the most-visited city in the world with over 20 million international travelers in 2023

In December, Euromonitor International released its annual list of the Top 100 City Destinations in the world for 2023. The report compared cities using 55 metrics across six categories, including tourism infrastructure, health and safety, sustainability, tourism performance, and more.

Euromonitor International's analysis also included a top 10 ranking of global cities based on the number of international arrivals. "International travel has continued to make a strong recovery in 2023 with 38% growth in terms of number of trips, projected to reach 1.3 billion by the end of the year," the report states.

New York City was the only destination in the United States to make Euromonitor International's top 10 list. The Big Apple saw 11 million arrivals, a 24% growth from 2022 to 2023. "Consumers are expected to look for value for money travel propositions when booking travel. This, in turn, will drive consumer demand for intraregional travel, especially as travel purchases are frequently discretionary," Nadejda Popova, Senior Manager at Euromonitor International says of the report's findings. "Travelers will continue to favor authentic and local experiences in addition to sustainable tourism alternatives."

Istanbul was the city with the most international arrivals in 2023

Istanbul, Turkey was the No. 1 city for international arrivals in 2023. The city saw a whopping 20.2 million visitors in 2023 — a 26% growth from 2022 to 2023 — according to the report.

The history center of Istanbul is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to several buildings and structures, such as the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Walls of Constantinople, and more.

According to National Geographic , the best time to visit Istanbul is in the spring or the autumn (April through May and September). The seasons are also less crowded than in the summer.

Top 10 cities for international travelers 2023

 • Istanbul, Turkey
 • London, U.K.
 • Antalya, Turkey
 • Paris, France
 • Bangkok, Thailand
 • New York, U.S.
 • Cancún, Mexico
 • Mecca, Saudi Arabia

London came in the No. 2 spot with 18.8 million international arrivals in 2023. The capital city of England saw a 17% year-over-year visitor growth from 2022 to 2023.

In the report, London was highlighted as having the best tourism infrastructure in the world. Several groups, including Park Hyatt, Oberoi, and Mandarin Oriental, are planning to open new hotels in the city, according to CNBC .

London is home to several renowned higher education institutions, including the Imperial College and the London School of Economics.

The city is the most visited in Europe and has several landmarks including Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, and the Tower of London.

The winner takes it all

Forget inedible meals, postage stamp-sized economy seats and sky-high fares – the airline industry has stepped up in 2023. From top-tier comfort and cleanliness to the best customer service and family-friendly facilities, we've rounded up a selection of the winners from Skytrax's World Airline Awards 2023.

Click or scroll on for a look at the airlines pulling out all the stops to make your flying experience that little bit more special.

This award analyzes an airline’s progress year-on-year, examining its change in global rating within Skytrax’s World Airline Awards program and its performance improvements in the individual award categories. Coming out on top as the Most Improved Airline for 2023, Kuwait Airways has been recognized for its customer-first approach and its commitment to service upgrades.

World’s Most Improved Airline: Kuwait Airways

From cabin crew getting swish new uniforms in 2022 to introducing a complimentary chauffeur service for first and business-class passengers, as well as goals of owning 50 aircraft by 2025, Kuwait Airways is going from strength to strength. The national carrier for the state of Kuwait currently operates flights to 60 destinations worldwide, including in Egypt, India, the UK and America.

World’s Cleanest Airline: ANA All Nippon Airways

ANA (All Nippon Airways) is one of the most consistently high-rated airlines both in Asia and worldwide. It picked up the World’s Cleanest Airline award for the third year in a row in 2023, while also holding onto its 2022 crown for the World’s Best Airport Services. Founded in 1952, Japan’s largest airline – although not the national carrier – is one of the most significant airlines in Asia, operating 43 international and 61 domestic routes.

The airline focuses on an excellent in-flight experience infused with hints of Japanese culture. It provides passengers with amazing amenities, food, cleanliness and friendly cabin crew. After two years of tough COVID-19 restrictions, Japan resumed visa-free entry and independent travel in October 2022 – and it looks like ANA is rising to the occasion.

Love this? Running away with the Best Cabin Crew title, the national carrier for Indonesia is back on form in 2023 after winning the award for five consecutive years from 2014. Garuda Indonesia connects more than 90 destinations worldwide to its home country and the region of Southeast Asia, launching over 600 flights per day.

World’s Best Airline Cabin Crew: Garuda Indonesia

The airline prides itself on sharing Indonesia’s traditional hospitality and unique culture with its passengers. The Skytrax website rates Garuda Indonesia five stars for customer service, with reviews praising the cabin crew’s attentive, welcoming, courteous and compassionate manner.

World’s Best Economy Class: Japan Airlines

Operating almost 200 routes worldwide and serving destinations such as Tokyo, London, Paris, Melbourne, Osaka and Los Angeles, Japan’s national carrier was founded in 1951 and has been building up a significant fan base ever since. Those flying economy with Japan Airlines regularly wax lyrical about how comfortable the seats are, as well as the general smooth-running of the experience.

World’s Best Premium Economy Class: EVA Air

EVA Air's premium economy fares come with at-seat slippers, noise-canceling headphones, a water bottle, pillow and soft blanket, as well as a complimentary overnight bag. On a long-haul flight, expect the food and drink to come flying thick and fast, from congee for breakfast to snacks of cheese crackers. In mid-2024, the airline is set to update all of its Boeing 787-9s to include a premium economy class due to demand.

World's Best Regional Airline: Bangkok Airways

As well as bagging the Best Regional Airline in Asia award, Bangkok Airways took home first place for the World’s Best Regional Airline. It might not come as a surprise: it's the seventh consecutive year the airline has won both awards. It serves 11 Thai hotspots and a growing number of international destinations, including Cambodia, Singapore, the Maldives, Myanmar, Hong Kong and Laos.

Alaska Airlines has been running for over 90 years and today services more than 44 million annual passengers and 120-plus destinations across five countries, including the US, Mexico and Belize. It wins North America's Best Regional Airline in 2023, closely followed by jetBlue Airways and 2022's winner WestJet in second and third place. The fifth-largest airline in the United States, Alaska Airlines will add its first flights to the Bahamas imminently in time for some winter sun.

Best Regional Airline in North America: Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has championed the use of sustainable biofuels since 2011 and was also the first airline to compost and remove single-use plastic straws and citrus picks from its planes and passenger lounges. The future is looking even more revolutionary for the region’s favorite airline, as it has just begun partnering with CLEAR to speed up and streamline its customers' passage through airport security.

World’s Best Low-Cost Airline: AirAsia

This reliable airline has been awarded the World's Best Low-Cost Airline since 2010 and is well-recognized by other industry heavyweights for its budget offerings. The Premium Flatbed seat on its Airbus A330 is considered among the world’s best-value premium cabins, being fully reclinable with adjustable head and foot rests, plus comfy bedding and a privacy screen. Complimentary meals, priority boarding and baggage collection, and access to hours of inflight entertainment are included in the cost too.
