Is Vietjet a good airline? Or is it like other budget airlines? Does it serve food? How is the leg space? Are the seats comfortable?
If you’ve booked or are about to book a Vietjet Air ticket, all these questions must have popped up in your head.
In this honest Vietjey Air review, I will share my end-to-end experience of flying Vietjet Air. I will go over the booking process, purchase of add-ons, seat comfort and leg space, crew’s hospitality, onboard facilities, etc. In the end, I will also talk about a horrific experience that we had at Ho Chi Minh City Airport.
I will also try and answer as many common questions about Vietjet Air as possible.
Vietjet Air Review – Is Vietjet Air good?
Here’s my detailed Vietjet Air review. It is based on my flights from Mumbai to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Mumbai. I travelled with my husband and my 4-year-old daughter.
Booking, Website and App experience
To be honest, I booked Vietjet tickets using the Easemytrip platform as it is tied to HDFC’s Smartbuy portal.
Since we were flying into Hanoi and leaving from Ho Chi Minh City, I would have liked to see a multi-destination booking facility. But Vietjet’s official website does not offer that and so I had to book two separate tickets (Mumbai-Hanoi and then Ho Chi Minh City-Mumbai) which was a slight inconvenience for sure.
After I booked the tickets, I did not get any confirmation email from Vietjet Air. The only email I got was from EaseMyTrip.
That definitely had me scared as booking through third-party vendors is always slightly risky.
When I tried to check my booking status using the PNR allotted to me, it kept giving me an error that there is no booking to that effect. This really had me petrified and I frantically made an international call to their Vietnam Customer Care number as they do not have a local office in India.
On contacting them, I was told that I should add ‘Mr’ after my husband’s name and middle name to retrieve the booking . As ridiculous and absurd as it was, it did show me my booking and I was relieved. But I found this little glitch rather ridiculous.
The customer care executive also had a confirmation email sent to me for both of my tickets. But again, I found it disappointing that I did not get an email automatically and that I had to reach out to them over an international call to get this rather straightforward process initiated.
Another small complaint I have about Vietjet Air is that its website doesn’t seamlessly translate all the content into English. The cookie consent notification is in Vietnamese and I still have no idea whether I click on the agree button or not!
Similarly, the app kept sending multiple notifications to me in Vietnamese every day until I uninstalled it after coming back from the trip!
Purchase of Add-Ons like Seats and Meals
A couple of weeks before our trip, we decided to book our seats and prebook a few meals.
So we logged in again using our booking number (with the addition of Mr to the name of course) and went ahead and booked the most expensive seats available to the economy class ticket holders.
The seats cost us INR 800 per person.
We then also booked the meals. We were pleased to see a few Indianised options for its flights to and from India.
We booked the following three meals – Veg Fried Rice – Thai Rice – Naan with Veggies
The exact names could be a bit different but this was the crux. Each meal cost us around INR 500 which is reasonable for international travel.
Upon making payment for our add-ons, I immediately got a confirmation email with the tickets reflecting our selected seats and meals.
An important note about buying add-ons
the total amount displayed includes the cost of your ticket plus the cost of the add-ons. It is displayed in VND and since the currency is weaker than INR – the amount runs in crores. Don’t get confused. You are only charged for the add-ons you selected and you don’t have to pay the fare for your tickets again!
In my opinion, the process of buying add-ons went far more smoothly than the initial booking process.
Changes to Itinerary
After I bought my add-ons for my flight from Mumbai to Hanoi, I immediately received a confirmation email with the ticket.
But, it is through this email that I found out that our flight which was scheduled to leave at 1:30 am at the time of initial booking had been preponed to 11:00 pm! The flight was preponed by a solid 2.5 hours and there was no communication from Vietjet about it.
Imagine the chaos if we had we not purchased add-ons and only found out about this at the time of web check-in.
So please keep checking your flight schedule to avoid missing out on key itinerary changes.
Check-in Experience
The experience of checking in luggage was extremely smooth. Since we had booked the Eco category ticket, we were allowed checked luggage up to 20 kg per person.
The staff, both in India and in Vietnam, spoke good English and seemed fairly cooperative and prompt.
This meant that we spent hardly 15 minutes for check-in and could then head towards security and immigration without any unreasonable delay.
In-flight experience
Seats and Leg space
The seats that we had booked for our flight to Hanoi were the most expensive seats available to economy class ticket holders and yet the leg space was next to none.
We were cramped throughout our journey of about 5 hours and could hardly catch any sleep as a result. My husband who is 6 feet tall was particularly uncomfortable throughout as his knees kept brushing against the seat in front of us.
On our way back to Mumbai though, the same INR 800 seats offered decent leg space making the journey back to Mumbai slightly more comfortable.
So if you are travelling Vietjet and are yet to book your seats, please don’t skimp on your seat selection. Spend those extra few bucks and buy the best seats as that’s your only shot at finding some comfort.
If possible, book the emergency exit seats for guaranteed extra leg space.
Sadly, those seats were unavailable to us as we were travelling with a toddler.
The meals we booked were average. The taste was quite bland and the portion size was disappointing. The meal composition also felt pretty dry as the rice was not served with any gravy. Even the kofta that came with the naan was completely dry. As a whole, the dining experience on the flight was not memorable.
If you can pack your own meals for the flight.
Also if you don’t pre-book your meals, the choices offered on the flight are not as varied as the ones available while pre-booking.
The meal pricing is slightly more expensive than the one offered while pre-booking.
Water except for one complimentary glass is chargeable. Please fill up your bottles post-security to avoid paying for water.
Making payment for food is often an issue for passengers who do not have VND currency. don’t expect the crew to have change for INR or USD when paying for your meals on the flight. Carry small currency notes to avoid issues and expect the crew to return any amount due in VND (Converted from USD or INR as per the rate decided by them)
The in-flight crew is warm and prompt.
But their struggles with English make communication difficult resulting in goofing up meal and beverage requests.
The toilets on both our flights were clean and came with all the basics required.
But they were the tiniest in-flight toilets I have ever seen. There is no room for you to extend your arms or legs.
Horrific experience at Ho Chi Minh City Airport
At Ho Chi Minh City airport, our check-in, security, and other formalities went by smoothly. After the boarding gates opened, we had to board a shuttle to go to the aircraft.
My husband, my 4-year-old kid and I boarded the shuttle along with the many fellow passengers of our flight. I have a feeling that the passengers on the shuttle were more than the permitted capacity.
It took the shuttle about 15 minutes to reach our aircraft and that is when the worst incident unfolded.
The driver of the shuttle turned off the engine and along with it the air conditioner and got down. We waited for the ground staff to open the doors of our shuttle. But that didn’t happen and time kept passing.
After about 5 minutes, the passengers got restless as sweat started trickling down. The crowded shuttle added to the suffocation. Senior citizens panicked. Asthma patients started banging on the windows pleading for the doors to be opened. The suffocation made us miserable as we kept banging against the windows to draw the attention of the ground staff.
But to our horror, the staff continued to ignore us. Only after about 10+ minutes, when one of the passengers decided to break the window using the emergency exit hammer, did the staff try to find out what was wrong.
Finally, the captain of the aircraft asked the ground staff to open the doors of the shuttle. We weren’t allowed to get off till the aircraft was ready. But the opening of the doors allowed some ventilation and provided slight relief.
After we were allowed to descend from the shuttle, all of us demanded an explanation for the horrible explanation causing suffocation and trauma to many passengers.
But unfortunately, the captain and the Vietjet staff refused to take any responsibility stating that it was not their fault and that the ground staff was responsible for the episode.
But as a passenger who pays the airline and not the ground staff, this entire episode made us feel like shit . The airline didn’t stand up to defend us. Why the aircraft wasn’t ready when boarding had started was also not understood. The staff or any member of Vietjet Air did not apologize to us and no compensation or explanation of any sort was offered.
A passenger on the flight had to be put on oxygen for the entire flight possibly due to the horrible lack of oxygen in the shuttle.
The lack of humanity shown by the airline staff was alarming.
Now I am not saying that you should be worried based on one such incident. But the brushing off of a life-threatening episode by Vietjet Air exposed its inhuman attitude.
Vietjet Air – Frequently Asked Questions
Does vietjet serve alcohol.
Meals, sandwiches, water, and alcohol are available on a Vietjet flight subject to availability on a paid basis.
How much baggage is allowed in Vietjet?
The baggage allowed depends on the type of ticket you have purchased. But typically, one hand luggage not exceeding 7 kgs and one checked luggage not exceeding 20 kgs is allowed.
Some tickets do not allow any checked luggage while some allow checked luggage of up to 50 kgs as well as an extra small bag as hand luggage of up to 2 kgs. Please read the airline’s baggage-related FAQs for a better understanding.
Is Vietjet trustworthy?
Vietjet is a trustworthy airline. It has also won the ‘Most Valued Airline of the Year in Asia 2022’ award and is a safe airline to travel with. But being a low-cost airline, the convenience of booking and flying offered doesn’t match with other full-fledged carriers like Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, etc.
Vietjet Air is a budget airline and its service matches its price tag. In fact, its affordable pricing is what has made travel to Vietnam possible for so many Indians and budget travelers. So go with the right expectations and you would not mind the discomfort you face on your 5-hour direct flight.
But if airfare is not a pain point for you, please avoid Vietjet by all means.

Overview of VietJet Air
Commencing operation in 2011, Vietjet Air offers a wide range of domestic services across Vietnam as well as international destinations throughout Asia. The majority of flights are scheduled out of its base in Hanoi; however, a secondary hub in Ho Chi Minh provides an easier link to countries south such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
Offering competitive prices to passengers and minimal services, the airline has developed a strong customer base within the low-cost market. It has introduced Thai Vietjet Air as a subsidiary, which focuses on domestic flights within Thailand. In 2015 it was crowned the Best Asian Low-Cost Carrier at the TTG Travel Awards. A codeshare agreement is in place with Japan Airlines, which provides more flexibility to customers for both domestic and international trips.
The fleet of Vietjet Air is made up entirely of Airbus airplanes. Flying both the A320 and A321 models, the aircraft are capable of transporting between 180 and 230 passengers. The carrier became the first to fly the A320neo model in Southeast Asia. The livery of the airliners features Vietnam’s national colors of red and yellow. Keep an eye out to see if you travel on a specially marked A321-211 plane, which is decorated to celebrate 45 years of diplomatic ties between France and Vietnam.
If you would like to upgrade from the standard Economy Class, a separate ticket class termed SkyBoss is available. You will have access to an exclusive lounge prior to your flight, which is equipped with complimentary food and magazines. Seat selection and check-in priority is also afforded.

The most making money airline.
Bad customer service, bad communication skill, oppressing adolescents, trying to charge money with whatever they can! They allow me to go through the check-in counter with my baggages after discussion but then try to charge me again when going through the gate. I said I’m under 18 and go alone and asked them to talk with my parents for support but they all refused (I dont have enough cash with me). 3,4 people constantly asked for money, and I thought they dont know how to communicate properly with customers (especially adolescents like me). I think I’ve suffered from serious mental damage. Never again!
Doesn’t even deserve 1 star
WORST airline and I Fly a lot, out of my 6 flights in SE Asia this one is the worst, nothing has changed with my baggage weight and they charge 60$ for check in after waiting at the counter early they come 20 minutes late giggling and drinking coffee wait another 10 minutes tell me to check all my bags go back to the line wait again tell me to go through security again. NEVER fly this airline, I went next door to thai smile ticket counter just to see how much, they allow me to bring my bags free and fly for 50$. 10$ LESS than the fee to check bag in this horrible airline. NEVER AGAIN.
THE WORST AIRLINE EVER!!
I flew in October from Narita to Hanoi on Viet Jet on an Airbus aircraft. The awful service starts at the check in counter and continues with the inflight service. Starting with check in you have to pay cash for everything. Once on board if you want anything to drink from water to tea you have to pay cash. I have been flying commercial all over the world for 50 years and this absolutely the worst carrier on the planet! Avoid this airline like the plague! The seating is cramped and I will not even comment how awful the food is especially since you have to pay for it!

VietJet Air, a low-cost carrier based in Vietnam, was founded in 2007. Headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, it is one of Vietnam’s first privately-owned airlines.
The airline primarily operates from two hubs:

Details on Headphone Accessibility
VietJet Air does not explicitly mention the provision of headphones on their website.
However, passengers can always bring their own wired headphones for in-flight entertainment. Wired headphones with a standard 3.5mm jack are widely compatible with most aircraft entertainment systems.
Using Bluetooth headphones during flights might be an issue. Rules governing the use of wireless headphones differ from those for cell phones.
Bluetooth operates at a lower power and does not interact with cell towers, making it generally safe for flight use.
However, it is essential to verify with VietJet Air’s specific flight guidelines on Bluetooth connectivity before using wireless headphones. Airlines may have varying policies regarding Bluetooth headphone use during flights.
In case you need to purchase a pair of headphones before your flight, consider browsing quality options available on Amazon. They offer a wide range of both wired and wireless headphones that cater to different preferences and budgets.
Booking and Check-in Process
VietJet Air allows you to book flights easily through their official website. You may also find and book flights using popular platforms like Skyscanner.
Upon booking online, make sure to take note of your Reservation Code or E-ticket Number.
You will need this during the check-in process at the airport. Remember that for domestic flights within Vietnam, the online check-in is available 24 hours to 1 hour before departure.
When you arrive at the airport, go to the VietJet Air check-in counter and follow the instructions provided by the ground service staff.
They will verify your travel documents, provide you with a boarding pass, and assist you with checked baggage if needed.
Keep in mind that the closing time for check-in counters varies depending on your flight type.
For domestic flights, it’s 40 minutes before departure; international flights departing from Japan, Korea, and India have a 60-minute cutoff; and other international flights have a 50-minute cutoff.
During boarding, ensure that your hand baggage complies with VietJet Air’s carry-on baggage standards and have your boarding pass ready for inspection.
International Flight Operations
VietJet Air operates international flights, connecting Vietnam with various international destinations.
The airline uses a fleet of new and eco-friendly aircraft for efficient operations.
Some of the popular international destinations served by VietJet include Singapore, Hanoi, Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, and Bangkok. These routes connect passengers with key cities in Asia.
In 2023, following government approval, VietJet resumed regular international flights from January 1st. This marked a significant milestone for the airline as it extended its reach to worldwide customers.
Onboard amenities, such as headphones, vary depending on the specific flight and ticket class.
However, passengers can expect a comfortable journey with the airline’s friendly and dedicated staff.
Comparison with Other Airlines
VietJet Air, being a low-cost airline, does not provide headphones during flights.
Here’s a brief comparison with other airlines regarding headphone provisions:
- Frontier Airlines: Similar to VietJet Air, Frontier Airlines is also a low-cost carrier and does not offer headphones onboard.
- Cable: It seems the term “cable” is not related to an airline, and thus, a comparison cannot be made.
- Delta Airlines: Delta Airlines, a full-service carrier, offers complimentary headphones on long-haul international flights and in some premium cabins domestically.
- United Airlines: Like Delta, United Airlines is also a full-service airline providing complimentary headphones for international flights and domestic flights in premium cabins.
It is important to note that low-cost carriers like VietJet Air and Frontier Airlines prioritize affordable fares over in-flight amenities like headphones.
Meanwhile, full-service airlines like Delta and United Airlines offer more amenities, including headphones, as a part of their service, especially in premium cabins and on international routes.

I tried those $200 flights to Vietnam … here’s what it’s really like
Low-cost airline VietJet launched with a bang into the Australian market, offering $200 flights from Australia to Vietnam. So what’s it actually like on this cheap-as-chips carrier?

Vietnam visa chaos is catching out Aussie travellers
20-minute test of Vietnam’s best resort
Insane $165 flights to Vietnam just dropped
Fun fact: it’s currently cheaper to book a flight to Vietnam than many domestic destinations in Australia.
And with winter fast approaching, devouring a Banh Mi and a White Lion tinnie by a pool instead of shuddering in the rain while you wait for a bus is a deeply appealing prospect.
VietJet has been established in Asia for a while, but this is the first time they have ventured into the Australian market. You can now fly direct from Melbourne/Sydney to Ho Chi Minh, and from June you’ll be able to fly from Brisbane.
But as we all know, sometimes flights on budget airlines can be a slog.
So I jumped on board to see whether it’s the bargain of the century, or hell in a tin can in the sky …
Their premium economy has the very baller name ‘Sky Boss’, and that is what I flew
The difference between this and regular economy is you get a higher baggage allowance, an amenities kit, there’s a little more leg room between rows, and two meals with drinks are included. You also get priority check-in and access to the lounge.
That’s lovely, but what is included in those $200 flights?
Often sale fares lie to you, and you get stung with extra taxes, airport fees and surcharges when you go to pay. Vietjet is refreshing in that regard - those $200 flights to Ho Chi Minh include all taxes and fees. They go on sale on the Vietjet site each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. You will probably have to pay extra for baggage, as the allowance on the sale fares is one 7kg carry on bag (with an extra personal item of 2kg).
As we were flying SkyBoss we were able to use the priority check-in queue, but we did stand at the front of this queue for half an hour while staff dealt with issues with other passengers. Unfortunately the check-in process couldn’t be described as smooth / seamless.
There are some dishes on the in-flight menu that will be familiar to western palettes (Singapore Noodles! Spaghetti Bolognese!), and some more traditional Vietnamese dishes for those wanting to get a little more adventurous …
Our meal came with a single boiled egg in a foil cup. If anyone has any tips on how to break the shell of a boiled egg on a flimsy airline tray table, please get in touch. I was considering trying to break it on the cabin wall, but felt like I might end up on @passengershaming
The meals were actually pretty good. The Singapore Noodles and Thai fried rice were very serviceable.
The MVP on the tray was definitely the condiments. Those little sachets of MSG-laden hot sauce and soy sauce do a lot of heavy lifting flavour-wise. But it works.
The white wine hailed from Portugal and was served slightly warmer than a lukewarm cuppa.
Entertainment
Nothing provided. You’ll need to come armed with your own. Be sure to download movies on your own device before you depart.
Amenities kit
In SkyBoss we got a red log of an amenities kit with a blow-up neck pillow, eye mask, and a blankie. The amenities kit can be purchased for $US11.50 in economy.
On board service / experience
The cabin was clean and the crew were super friendly. Their outfits are also cute as hell. Who knew that a red / check combo like this could pop?
Only criticism - there were no overhead air vents that you could control, and it did get uncomfortably warm in the cabin.
Onboard merch
Was it an on-time departure?
Our flight was scheduled to leave at 10.15am and we ended up taking off around 11am. We arrived in Ho Chi Minh 20 minutes behind scheduled arrival time.
Seat selection tips on VietJet
The aircraft that flies between Australia and Vietnam is the A330. It might seem savvy to book a seat in the front row of the cabin (which does offer extra legroom and powerpoints), but keep in mind that the armrests in this row are fixed and don’t lift up. As such, if you are lucky enough to score “poor man’s business class” (ie the whole row to yourself), you won’t be able to lift the armrests to lie down flat. But that isn’t really a problem on a day time flight when you’re staying awake
I am always mildly concerned that a budget airline is more likely to fall out of the sky, but VietJet holds a seven-star rating, which is the highest you can achieve.
What were the other passengers like?
Well behaved - nobody that we wanted to throw out of the emergency exit at 33,000 feet.
What’s the flight time?
Is it worth upgrading on vietjet.
At the pointy end of the plane is SkyBoss business, which has flat lay seats. The airline is currently offering 50 per cent off both SkyBoss and SkyBoss Business seats. The flights back to Australia tend to be red eye (eg leaving Ho Chi Minh at night and arriving in Australia at around 7am) so it would be worth taking advantage of this deal to get a flat-lay bed so you can sleep on that crushing return flight. But economy on the way to Vietnam (which tends to be a daytime flight where you stay awake), is just fine.
So would I recommend VietJet?
Yes. Absolutely. $200 is a price you can’t argue with in this era of eye-wateringly expensive airfares.
For any Aussie travellers who have been to Bali and Thailand and are looking for a new Asian getaway - with a reasonably short flight time that won’t cause jetlag and young children to have full-body meltdowns - this is a cracking option.
Get on board.
The $200 flights go on sale on the VietJet website on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Simone Mitchell travelled as a guest of VietJet.
Simone has been a fan of travel ever since an early family holiday when she discovered chocolates had been left on her pillow in turndown service! Her favourite travel experience has been dancing with a 90-year-old grandma on a table in Crete after a long lunch. Her worst travel experience has been fainting in the street in Tokyo after enthusiastically eating a takoyaki ball that was way too hot.
Scam or slip-up? Either way, it’s a mess.
If it takes more than 20 minutes to find yourself in this kind of luxury situation upon arrival at your hotel, then you're missing a trick.
It's one of the hottest destinations in Asia right now. And with a flight sale like this, it would be almost rude not to book a holiday.
This $6 banh mi is Vietnam’s best splurge
The ultimate banh mi is worth braving the mad Ho Chi Minh City traffic for - just ask Matt Preston.

Japan airlines reveals boeing 767 livery inspired by tokyo disneysea, “restrictive” nda prompts southwest airlines' flight attendant union to decline meeting with management.
Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet has revealed that Moscow will be its first European destination. The airline has said that the Russian capital will be linked to three Vietnam cities from July. We check it out.
What's happening?
Fast-growing LCC VietJet has said that it'll be adding Moscow (seemingly Sheremetyevo) from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and the beach resort of Nha Trang from early July, the month it expects its short-haul international operation to be fully operational.
It is expected that Hanoi will begin on July 3rd with two weekly flights. Ho Chi Minh will be a one-stop through-plane service via Hanoi, while Nha Trang will be twice-weekly from July 10th. VietJet's Managing Director, Dinh Viet Phuong, said:
“VietJet is ready to relaunch international services. We have invested in a modern fleet, and we will expand our intercontinental flight network in the coming time. I believe that Vietjet’s new services to Russia will again prove our commitment to offering top-quality flight products and services."
Although not yet bookable, Moscow looks much more likely to materialize than fellow Vietnam operator Bamboo Airways' multiple new long-haul routes, including to the US , Melbourne, Prague, Munich, and more . It signs agreements, and nothing happens. It was the case even before coronavirus. Will it change?

Why Russia?
Vietnam is a very popular destination for Russians. According to the Ministry of Culture, Sport, and Tourism, nearly 650,000 Russians visited in 2019. It was Vietnam's sixth-largest source market, behind China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the US.
According to Vietnam Tourism, in the first three months of 2020, as the pandemic started to hit, Russian visitors more than doubled versus the same period the year before. Vietnam closed its border in March 2020 and only reopened, albeit limitedly, in November 2021.
Beach and cities
Beach resorts are especially popular for Russians. In 2019, Nha Trang alone was linked non-stop to 27 airports across the nation, OAG shows. These included places that many won't have heard of, such as Blagoveschensk, Kemerovo, and Novokuznetsk. They'll all be coming back, with Russia undoubtedly to be even more significant in time.
Meanwhile, Aeroflot connected Sheremetyevo non-stop to both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, and Vietnam Airlines operated Hanoi-Sheremetyevo. Currently, Vietnam Airlines serves Sheremetyevo from both Vietnam airports, with no date for Aeroflot's return.
VietJet's incoming A330s
In early November, VietJet announced plans to take its first steps into the widebody market by acquiring three leased Airbus A330s . As well as Moscow, and any other European destination, they're likely also to be deployed across Asia, especially at peak times.
According to ch-aviation.com , VietJet has 75 aircraft across the A320ceos, A321ceos, and A321neos. It has a further 320 aircraft on order, especially the A321neo and B737 MAX. Meanwhile, Thai VietJet has 16 jets, all A320ceos, and A321ceos.
What do you make of VietJet's long-haul ambition? Let us know in the comments.
