What Is an Upper Berth on a Cruise Ship?

By Michael Ferguson

upper berth cruise ship

Upper Berths on a Cruise Ship are cabins located on the upper deck of a ship, usually above the Main Deck. They provide passengers with an elevated view of the ocean and ports of call while they’re at sea. Upper Berths typically have larger windows than lower cabins, allowing for more natural light and breathtaking views.

Upper Berths offer more privacy than those located below the Main Deck. As they are further away from public areas like restaurants and bars, they tend to be quieter and less disturbed by other passengers. The extra distance also helps to protect guests from sea sickness, as the waves are less likely to cause motion sickness when further away from the source.

Upper Berths come in various sizes and configurations, including suites that offer even more space and luxury amenities such as in-room bars or private balconies. However, these cabins are typically more expensive than those located lower on the ship due to their additional features.

In addition to their desirable amenities, Upper Berth cabins also boast enhanced safety features. Located higher up on the boat, they are less vulnerable to damage from rough seas or water leakage from lower decks. Furthermore, some ships feature additional safety features such as fire suppression systems specifically designed for upper-level cabins.

Introduction

When it comes to cruising, one of the most important aspects to consider is the accommodation. Cruise ship accommodations come in various shapes and sizes, catering to different preferences and budgets. Among the many options available, the upper pullman stands out as a unique choice for guests seeking a comfortable and convenient space.

The upper pullman, also known as an upper berth or bunk bed, is a type of sleeping arrangement found on cruise ships. It is designed to maximize the utilization of space in the cabin, allowing cruise lines to accommodate more passengers without compromising on comfort.

In this article, we will explore the concept of the upper pullman on a cruise ship. We will delve into its definition, purpose, features, and benefits. Additionally, we will provide useful tips for accessing and making the most of the upper pullman experience during your cruise vacation.

So, if you’re curious about what an upper pullman entails and how it can enhance your cruising experience, read on to discover all there is to know about this unique accommodation option.

Definition of Upper Pullman

The upper pullman is a sleeping arrangement commonly found on cruise ships. It is a space-saving concept that allows cruise lines to maximize the number of passengers they can accommodate on board. The upper pullman is typically a fold-out or pull-out bed that is positioned above the main bed(s) in a cabin.

This type of accommodation is often referred to as an upper berth or bunk bed. It is called a “pullman” because the bed can be pulled out from a wall or ceiling when needed and then folded away when not in use, creating more floor space during the day.

Upper pullmans are usually found in cabins that can accommodate more than two passengers, such as family cabins or cabins with interconnecting doors. They are an excellent option for families or larger groups traveling together, as they provide an additional sleeping space without the need for an extra cabin.

It is important to note that upper pullmans vary in design and functionality depending on the cruise line and ship. Some may be fixed beds that cannot be folded away, while others may have additional features such as privacy curtains or ladders for easy access.

Overall, the upper pullman offers a practical solution for maximizing space in cruise ship cabins while still providing a comfortable and cozy sleeping area for guests.

Purpose of Upper Pullman on a Cruise Ship

The upper pullman serves several important purposes on a cruise ship, benefiting both the cruise line and the passengers. Let’s explore these purposes in detail:

  • Space Optimization: One of the primary purposes of the upper pullman is to optimize the use of space in cruise ship cabins. By incorporating a fold-out or pull-out bed above the main bed(s), cruise lines can accommodate more passengers in a limited area without sacrificing comfort. This is especially beneficial in cabins designed for families or groups, where maximizing space is crucial.
  • Cost-Effective Accommodation: The upper pullman provides a cost-effective solution for passengers who want to travel with more people but don’t want to book additional cabins. It allows families or groups to stay together in the same cabin, reducing the overall cost of their cruise vacation. This can be particularly advantageous for budget-conscious travelers.
  • Flexibility and Convenience: The flexibility and convenience offered by the upper pullman are another key purpose. The bed can be easily folded away during the day, creating additional floor space in the cabin. This allows passengers to move around comfortably and enjoy other activities in their cabin, such as relaxing or dining. At night, the bed can be pulled out, providing a comfortable sleeping space for the additional occupants.
  • Family-Friendly Accommodation: The upper pullman is especially popular among families traveling with children. It allows parents to have their own bed while their children sleep in the pullman bed above. This arrangement ensures everyone has a comfortable and secure space to rest, promoting a peaceful and enjoyable family vacation experience.

Overall, the purpose of the upper pullman on a cruise ship is to optimize space, provide cost-effective accommodation options, offer flexibility and convenience, and cater to the needs of families and larger groups. It is a practical solution that allows for efficient use of cabin space while ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay for passengers.

Features and Benefits of Upper Pullman

The upper pullman on a cruise ship offers several features and benefits that contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable stay for passengers. Let’s explore them:

  • Space-Saving Design: The primary feature of the upper pullman is its space-saving design. By utilizing the vertical space above the main bed(s), this arrangement maximizes the use of floor space in the cabin, allowing for a roomier feel during the day.
  • Comfortable Sleeping Surface: Despite being a fold-out or pull-out bed, the upper pullman is designed to provide a comfortable sleeping surface. Cruise lines understand the importance of a good night’s sleep for their guests and ensure that the mattress and bedding on the upper pullman are of high quality.
  • Privacy Options: Some upper pullmans come equipped with privacy curtains, allowing occupants to create a sense of personal space when needed. This feature can be particularly useful for families or groups who desire privacy while sleeping or changing clothes.
  • Accessibility: To ensure ease of access, cruise ships with upper pullmans often provide sturdy ladders or steps for passengers to climb up to the bed. This ensures safety and convenience, especially for children or older adults who may have difficulty reaching the elevated sleeping area.
  • Affordability: Another notable benefit of the upper pullman is its affordability. It provides a cost-effective option for families or groups traveling together, allowing them to save on accommodation expenses by sharing a cabin instead of booking multiple rooms.
  • Quality Family Time: The upper pullman facilitates quality family time by keeping everyone together in one cabin. Parents can sleep in the main bed(s) while their children occupy the upper pullman. This arrangement allows families to bond, share experiences, and create lasting memories during their cruise vacation.

Overall, the upper pullman offers a space-saving solution that ensures a comfortable sleeping surface, provides privacy options, ensures accessibility, and promotes affordability. It presents an excellent accommodation choice for families or groups who want to stay together while enjoying the benefits of a cruise vacation.

How to Access Upper Pullman on a Cruise Ship

Accessing the upper pullman on a cruise ship is a straightforward process. Here are the typical steps to follow:

  • Selecting the Right Cabin: When booking your cruise, ensure that you choose a cabin that offers the option of an upper pullman. These cabins are usually designated for families or groups and are explicitly mentioned in the cabin descriptions.
  • Informing the Cruise Line: It is essential to inform the cruise line or your travel agent about your preference for an upper pullman. This will ensure that the cabin is prepared with the necessary bedding arrangements and that any additional requests, such as privacy curtains, are taken into account.
  • Arriving at the Cabin: Once onboard the cruise ship, head to your assigned cabin. You will typically find the upper pullman bed folded away and secured against the wall or ceiling.
  • Preparing the Upper Pullman: If you need the upper pullman bed to be set up, you can ask the cabin steward for assistance. They will unfold the bed and ensure it is properly positioned and secured for your comfort and safety.
  • Using the Upper Pullman: The upper pullman can be accessed using a ladder or steps provided in the cabin. It is important to follow any safety guidelines provided by the cruise line to prevent accidents or injuries while climbing up or down the bed.
  • Storing Personal Belongings: If you are utilizing the upper pullman, you can use the storage options available near the bed, such as shelves or small compartments, to keep your personal belongings within reach.
  • Folding Away the Upper Pullman: During the day, when the bed is not in use, you can fold it away to create more floor space in the cabin. The cabin steward can assist with folding and securing the upper pullman.

It’s worth noting that the process may vary slightly depending on the cruise line and ship. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with any specific instructions or guidelines provided in your cabin or by the crew.

By following these steps, you can easily access and utilize the upper pullman on a cruise ship, ensuring a comfortable and efficient use of cabin space throughout your voyage.

Tips for Making the Most of Upper Pullman Experience

The upper pullman on a cruise ship can provide a unique and comfortable sleeping arrangement for passengers. To make the most of this experience, consider the following tips:

  • Communicate Your Preferences: Before your cruise, communicate your preference for the upper pullman to the cruise line or your travel agent. Specify any requests, such as privacy curtains or additional bedding, to ensure a personalized experience.
  • Coordinate Sleep Schedules: If you are sharing a cabin with others, coordinate sleep schedules to avoid disrupting each other’s rest. Ensure that everyone understands when and how the upper pullman will be used to maintain a peaceful sleeping environment.
  • Utilize Storage Space: Take advantage of storage space near the upper pullman bed to keep your personal belongings organized and within reach. Use shelves or compartments to store essentials such as books, gadgets, or a small travel alarm clock.
  • Create a Comfortable Environment: Personalize your sleeping space by bringing along items that make you feel at home, such as a small pillow or a cozy blanket. Adding your personal touch can enhance comfort and create a sense of familiarity.
  • Respect Privacy Boundaries: If privacy curtains are provided, be mindful and respectful of those using the upper pullman. Close the curtains when privacy is desired and open them during waking hours to promote a sense of openness and inclusiveness in the cabin.
  • Utilize Daytime Space: Since the upper pullman is foldable, make the most of the additional floor space during the day. Use the cleared area for activities like reading, relaxing, or enjoying in-cabin entertainment.
  • Take Advantage of Cabin Service: Utilize cabin service for breakfast or in-cabin dining to enjoy a leisurely meal without crowding the limited floor space. This allows you to savor the dining experience while avoiding the need to balance a tray on the upper pullman.
  • Communicate with Cabin Steward: Maintain open communication with your cabin steward throughout the cruise. They can assist with questions or concerns regarding the upper pullman, provide extra pillows or blankets, and ensure your experience is comfortable and enjoyable.

By following these tips, you can make the most of your upper pullman experience and ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay on your cruise.

The upper pullman on a cruise ship offers a practical and space-saving solution for maximizing accommodation options. It allows cruise lines to accommodate more passengers without compromising on comfort and provides an affordable choice for families or groups traveling together.

What is a Pullman Bed on a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ship cabins are generally designed to support two travelers in a room. But if you book a cabin for three or four travelers, you might find a bunk bed, sofa bed, or Pullman bed.

Table of Contents

A Pullman bed on a cruise ship is a type of bed designed to save space in a cabin . Pullman beds pull down from the wall or ceiling. They are named after the Pullman Company, which originally designed these beds for train compartments.

Pullman beds offer additional sleeping space in the cabin without permanently occupying the limited floor area.

The Pullmans, sometimes called “upper berths,” in conjunction with convertible beds and sofa beds, allow cruise ships to change the room configuration as required by the number of occupants.

These beds allow cruise lines to transform a two-person cabin into a four-person in a matter of minutes.

When the Pullman beds aren’t needed (for example, two people booked in a four-person cabin), they can be tucked away out of sight.

A Pullman bed can be stowed away when not in use, usually folding up against the wall or into the ceiling, thereby freeing up space and making the cabin more versatile and comfortable during the day. These beds are especially useful in cabins that accommodate families or groups, as they provide extra sleeping arrangements without needing a larger, more expensive cabin.

The beds are designed with safety in mind , often featuring guardrails to prevent the sleeper from falling out.

Cruise ship cabins might have one or two Pullmans with a convertible bed on the floor. When joined, a convertible bed can be used as two twin beds or a queen-sized bed.

Pullman beds were invented by George M. Pullman, who sought to create a space-saving solution for sleeping on trains. The style of beds was first introduced in sleeper cars on trains in the late 1850s. At the time, they were known as “upper bands,” “bunk beds,” or “pull-down beds.”

Although they were considered a luxury amenity then, modern Pullman beds on a cruise ship are not a luxury.

The beds are small and far less comfortable than regular beds. As an adult, getting a good night’s rest in the small, uncomfortable upper Pullman bed on cruise ships is difficult.

Your cabin steward will raise and lower the bed for you. If you need assistance, you can always ask your stateroom attendant.

Pullmans often have weight limits. And there isn’t much clearance between the bed and the ceiling. The beds are generally best for children and smaller adults, who won’t hit their heads every time they sit up.

Some ships have low guard rails, which may be unsafe

Some Pullmans are smaller than a single bed

What is the Weight Limit on a Pullman Bed?

Pullman bed on Carnival Liberty 1024×504

The weight limit on a Pullman bed on a cruise ship can vary depending on the cruise line and the specific design of the bed. However, the weight limit for these beds is usually around 200 to 250 pounds (approximately 90 to 113 kilograms).

The weight limit is set to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the bed when in use.

It’s important to note that this is a general guideline, and for specific weight limits and safety instructions, it’s always best to check directly with the cruise line or refer to the information provided in your cabin on the ship. Cruise lines often provide details about the cabin amenities, including any restrictions or guidelines for using Pullman beds, either in their brochures, on their websites, or in the information available in the cabin itself.

Below are some of the weight limits listed by cruise lines.

Safety Considerations for Children

Although the upper bunks come with guard rails, there are considerable size differences between ships. Even cruise ships of the same class have major variations in guard rail sizes.

If you’re worried about your child falling out of bed, here are some precautions you can take:

  • Age and Maturity Level : Pullman beds are generally not recommended for very young children, especially those under 6, due to the risk of falling.
  • Guard Rails: Ensure the Pullman bed has sturdy guard rails to prevent the child from rolling off during sleep. You can ask for an extra guardrail or an inflatable one for added safety.
  • Switch Places: You can switch places with your child and take the upper berth. Keep in mind that the small bed is very uncomfortable for an adult.
  • Have a Backup Plan: You can bring a small inflatable bed as a backup if you feel the Pullman bed is unsafe for your child.
  • Use the Sofa: Your child can sleep on the sofa if your cabin has one.

How Big is a Pullman Bed?

Pullman beds vary in size but are generally the size of a single bed. Depending on the cruise ship, they might be slightly narrower or shorter and are rarely larger than a single bed. The beds are close to the ceiling, so it’s difficult for adults to sit up fully. Pullman beds are best for children, but if you are traveling with adults, it’s usually best if the smallest adult takes the Pullman.

Can You Raise or Lower the Pullman Bed?

For safety reasons, the stateroom attendant can only raise Pullman beds on cruise ships. If you need help with the bed, you can ask your cabin steward or call guest services.

Nice staterooms to be sure. The two story is very nice indeed but it would be way too much for just my wife and I… that being said, we would certainly give it try if we could. My wife would never leave the hot tub on the veranda.

While those royal suites look really nice, I can’t justify spending whatever the cost is going to be. I guess I’ll have to wait until the Trackers Vlog about it.

Question about the Deluxe Family w/ Veranda that sleeps 5 – it says there is a single sofa bed, a pull down bed and Q bed. Where does the 5th person sleep?

Cool Cruiser

I am about to embark on Dream Cruise - World Dream and was wondering about its terminology.

From official brochure, i found the following:

> Stateroom: 1,686

> Guest Capacity: 3,376 lower berths.

https://info.dream***************/en/cruise-ship/pdf/WDR_Brochure_Ver1.1_EN_Preview.pdf

Initially i thought its just mean double occupancy, however 1686*2 give 3372, so where's the missing four?

Probably just that the beds are all on the floor. No upper bunks.

Don’t know that ship but certainly possible that it may have a couple of Suites with 4 beds each to make up your discrepancy. Otherwise maybe they are just bad at math.

40,000+ Club

Upper and Lower Berths are old terms that apply to the location of beds. Lower Berths are on the floor (deck) while "Upper" Berths are above. On modern cruise ships some cabins will have 1 or 2 uppers berths which either fold out of the wall (bulkhead) or drop down from the ceiling. In most cases they are used for a 3rd or 4th person who is sharing a cabin.

30,000+ Club

Probably some two bedroom suites.

For those not familiar with the ship:

Thanks all for you response!

I got it, it's due to the 2 (penthouse) suite that come with two bedroom.

So lower berths is the standard double occupancy base on number of beds.

However, over 80% of World dream cabins come with third (sofa turn bed) and fourth (Pull down); that mean its higher berths (number not publish) around 5000 range.

For those not familiar, World dream belong to Dream Cruise, under Genting group. She have another ship, Genting dream, currently homeport Singapore year round. Both ships' new and huge, around 151t.

Yes, maximum capacity is less well published figure, but I've found some that list the Dream at 4500 max capacity. This is the maximum number of passengers that are allowed due to lifeboat seating capacity. There will always be more "berths" (beds, pull-out couches, pullmans, etc) than the maximum capacity, to allow those who wish to book more than two to a cabin to have a choice of different categories. So, even on a "sold out" cruise, there will still be bunks unoccupied.

Currently, the two Dreams are 17th and 18th on the list of largest cruise ships, by GT.
