Celine Dion cancels remaining dates of world tour due to health issues

By Caitlin O'Kane

Updated on: May 26, 2023 / 8:33 PM EDT / CBS News

Celine Dion has canceled the remaining dates of her world tour, which had already been postponed several times due to the pandemic and the singer's health issues.

"It is with tremendous disappointment that we have to announce today the cancellation of the Courage World Tour," Dion, 55, wrote on Instagram .

Dion had completed 52 dates of the tour before the COVD-19 pandemic shut down shows in 2020. When industries were opening back up in 2021, Dion filmed a move, "Love Again." However, at the end of 2022, she revealed she was diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome , a rare neurological disorder, and had to postpone the European leg of the tour.

"I'm so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I'm working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you're 100%," the post continued. "It's not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it's best that we cancel everything now until I'm really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I'm not giving up… and I can't wait to see you again!"

While she is working hard on her recovery, she was not able to prepare for the upcoming shows, which were set to begin in August in the Netherlands and continue into spring 2024, according to a press release she shared in her Instagram post.

All tickets for the 42 canceled dates will be refunded, the statement says.

Stiff-person syndrome is similar to an autoimmune disease and it makes people become rigid, with a heightened sensitivity to noise and touch that can also lead to muscle spasm, according to  the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. It can also leave patients with "hunched over and stiffened" postures.

Dion's career has spanned decades after she won Eurovision — an internationally popular song contest featuring singers from different countries competing against each other — in 1988. After cementing herself as a power ballad icon with five Grammy wins, she began a popular Las Vegas residency.

Dion has had to postpone concert dates before . In 2014, she announced she was battling an illness that caused inflammation in her throat muscles and also had to care for her husband Rene, who had cancer. ( He died in 2016.) Dion said in a statement at the time it had been "a very difficult and stressful" time for the family and she needed to postpone shows from her Caesars Palace residency and cancel Asia tour dates.

Celine Dion has cancelled the remaining dates of her world tour, telling fans she is not strong enough to perform following her diagnosis of an incurable neurological condition .

The Canadian singer told fans on Friday (26 May) she was “tremendously disappointed” to “let them down”.

Dion, 55, said in a statement: “I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100 per cent.”

She added: “I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again.

“I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

Stiff Person Syndrome: The incurable condition Celine Dion is suffering from

Her announcement comes after she posted a video in December last year explaining she has stiff person syndrome , which she says affects “every aspect of my daily life”.

The condition affects her ability to perform and sing, as well as to carry out normal activities, due to “spasms”.

“Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to,” she said.

Dion said she has a “great team of doctors” working hard to help her get better, but admitted it has been a “struggle”.

“All I know is singing. It’s what I’ve done all my life and it’s what I love to do the most,” she said.

Celine Dion announces she’s canceling remainder of world tour due to health issues

Celine Dion has announced she's canceled the remaining dates of her world tour due to health issues.

“It is with tremendous disappointment that we have to announce today the cancellation of the Courage World Tour,” she wrote on Instagram on May 26.

Added a statement on the singer's website: “As the world has emerged from the pandemic, Celine has continued to be treated for a diagnosed medical condition that prevents her from performing."

“I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again,” the Grammy winner said in a statement.

“I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%. It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

There are 42 shows remaining on the tour, all of which are in Europe. The first canceled shows were scheduled in Amsterdam, set to take place Aug. 26, 27 and 29. Dion had finished the first 52 dates of the tour prior to the pandemic.

Celine Dion

“We do have every hope that someday soon, Celine will be able to come to all of these cities in Europe to perform for her amazing fans, but that time simply is not now,” the statement on her site added.

In December of 2022, the “My Heart Will Go On” singer, who turned 55 in March and released a new song last month, announced she has stiff person syndrome . At the time, she also shared that she had to cancel tour dates in Europe that were supposed to kick off in February.

“While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having,” she said. “Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal (cords) to sing the way I’m used to.”

Stiff person syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that resembles an autoimmune disease, causing muscle stiffness in a person’s torso and limbs, as well as an increase sensitivity to noise, touch and emotional stress. That can lead to muscle spasms, according to the  National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke .

Roughly one or two people out of a million is afflicted with stiff person syndrome, according to  Johns Hopkins Medicine .

Dion initially canceled tour dates in January 2022, due to health issues.

“I was really hoping that I’d be good to go by now, but I suppose I just have to be more patient and follow the regimen that my doctors are prescribing,” she said in a statement that she shared on Instagram.

She canceled tour dates again in April 2022.

“I’m getting treatment from my doctors, taking medication, but I’m still experiencing some spasms and it’s taking a lot longer for me to recover than I had hoped,” she said in an Instagram video , while noting that she needs to be in “top shape” to perform.

Neil Young

Neil Young announced Wednesday that the remaining dates on the tour he has been doing with his longtime backing group Crazy Horse are being canceled, due to illness hitting “a couple of us” since they last performed in May. He did not specify whether he was among those stricken.

The cancellations are for shows as far as three months out from now. Affected are the seven Canadian shows Young had lined up in July, plus three U.S. shows he had scheduled for late September, at the Hollywood Bowl, southern California’s Eddie Vedder-driven Ohana Fest and Kentucky’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival.

Youtube tv needs more than the nfl to combat cord-cutting blitz, travis kelce pitched taylor swift on his eras tour cameo and thought 'oh s---' when finally on stage: it was 'pretty jarring' and an 'absolute blast', popular on variety.

“The Love Earth Tour has been a great experience for us so far,” Young’s message to fans began. “GREAT AUDIENCES AND MUSIC. WE HAVE HAD A BLAST!”

He continued, “When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to stop. We are still not fully recovered, so sadly our great tour will have a big unplanned break. We will try to play some of the dates we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again! We know many of you made travel plans and we apologize for the inconvenience. Thanks for your understanding and patience.”

Young concluded, “Health is # 1…. We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you…. and for for us…. With love and thanks to all of you from Crazy Horse….. Neil, Micah, Ralph and Billy… Love Earth.”

While Young did not specify which bandmembers are ill, at a concert in New York last month , Crazy Horse’s rhythm section — bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — seemed to be having challenges keeping up with the physical demands of the two-hour set, with many of the songs being played at slower tempos than their studio recordings.

As of this writing, Ticketmaster still has tickets up for sale for the Hollywood Bowl show, but the disappearance of the event from multiple pages on the Bowl website seems to confirm it has gone away with the other shows. No one will be blaming these cancellations on poor sales, at least: A seating chart still up for the Bowl concert shows seats only remaining in the very back.

A rep for Ohana Fest pointed to a statement on social media that reads: “We are sad to announce that Neil Young with Crazy Horse will no longer be performing at Ohana Festival 2024. Please stay tuned for a lineup update coming as soon as possible; in the meantime, we are wishing the band a speedy recovery.” Bourbon & Beyond posted a similar message saying to “stay tuned for a replacement announcement.”

Young fans saddened by the cancellations can at least console themselves with an eagerly awaited album release coming on Friday, “Early Daze,” a collection of previously unreleased recordings that Young made with Crazy Horse in 1969.

'It breaks my heart': Celine Dion cancels 'Courage World Tour' concerts

Canadian singer Celine Dion has cancelled all of her concerts scheduled through to early spring 2024.

In a statement Friday , Dion announced all remaining Courage World Tour shows have been cancelled due to an ongoing medical condition.

I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again... and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything until I’m really ready to be back on stage... I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!” – Celine xx… More info👉 https://t.co/DHUch7W7OF pic.twitter.com/bgszxVd1za

" I'm so sorry to disappoint all of you once again ," Dion said in a statement. "I'm working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you're 100 per cent."

Dion, 55, was diagnosed last year with a rare neurological condition known as stiff person syndrome (SPS).

WHAT'S STIFF PERSON SYNDROME

SPS is a neurological condition that impacts a person's muscles, and in Dion’s case, it hinders her ability to perform.

People with SPS have described the condition as "excruciating" and say it causes "debilitating" pain because of heightened sensitivity to noise and touch. The U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says SPS has "features" of an autoimmune disorder.

"It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again," the Canadian icon said Friday. "I want you all to know, I’m not giving up… and I can’t wait to see you again!”

Pink is “sorry” for canceling her concert in Bern, Switzerland, at the last minute due to a mystery illness.

“I do everything I can to ensure I can perform for you every night, but after consultation with my doctor and exploring all options available, I’ve been advised that I’m unable to continue with the show tomorrow,” the pop star, 44, wrote via Instagram Tuesday alongside a black-and-white photo of herself onstage.

She then said that she was “looking forward” to being with her fans and “making memories” with them.

Pink added that she is “so disappointed” over the the cancellation and promised that all tickets will be refunded via Swiss concert organizer TAKK ab Entertainment.

The “Just Give Me a Reason” singer concluded her message to her fans, “Sending love and health to you all, and I really hope to see you again soon. P!nk xoxo.”

Many followers appeared very supportive in the comments section, telling Pink to “get well soon” and that they send her “much love and healing vibes.”

It is unclear what illness the “Just Like a Pill” singer is currently battling. Page Six has reached out to her reps for comment but did not immediately hear back.

It is also unknown whether Pink will have to miss any more stops on her physically demanding Summer Carnival Tour.

She is scheduled to perform next in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Saturday.

One concerned fan wrote under Pink’s Instagram post, “Will you tell us in time if Copenhagen gets cancelled. Have to cancel the hotel in time.”

Pink with her hands open.

Another chimed in, “nope, she never gives notice. So many of us have lost thousands on hotels and air b&bs.”

However, a third follower came to the “So What” singer’s defense, writing, “she gives notice as soon as she can, she probably didn’t find out until now that she couldn’t play.”

A fourth also backed her, adding, “are you serious, she can’t help being unwell or unable to perform. Sometimes notice isn’t possible.”

singer cancels tour due to illness

Unlike her heart, the remaining shows of Celine Dion 's tour will not go on.

The singer announced Saturday that she would cancel the rest of the North American leg of her Courage World Tour as she recovers from a recent health issue.

Dion has been experiencing "severe and persistent muscle spasms" that prevent her from performing, according to a press release , and they recently caused her to postpone the start of a new show in Las Vegas.

"I was really hoping that I'd be good to go by now, but I suppose I just have to be more patient and follow the regimen that my doctors are prescribing," Dion said in a statement. "There's a lot of organizing and preparation that goes into our shows, and so we have to make decisions today which will affect the plans two months down the road. I'll be so glad to get back to full health, as well as all of us getting past this pandemic, and I can't wait to be back on stage again."

The singer also thanked fans for their support, adding, "I've been very touched by all the words of encouragement that everyone's been sending to me on social media. I feel your love and support and it means the world to me."

Dion's tour began in fall 2019 before the pandemic brought it to a halt in March 2020. The European leg of the tour is still scheduled to begin May 25 in Birmingham, England.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are going on a “big unplanned break” and have indefinitely postponing the rest of their Love Earth tour after some of the band members fell ill.

The announcement came after Young, 78, and the band cancelled their May 23 Chicago concert a few hours before hitting the stage followed by two more shows later that week.

The iconic band was set to return on tour in July and performing through September, but the schedule was removed from Young’s official site and replaced with a statement . It did not specify which band members were ill.

“When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we all had to stop,” the statement read. “We are still not fully recovered, so sadly our tour will have a big unplanned break. We will try to play some of the dates we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again!”

“We know many of you made travel plans and we apologize for the inconvenience,” the band added. “Thanks for your understanding and patience. Health is # 1. We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you…. and for for us. With love and thanks to all of you from Crazy Horse….. Neil, Micah, Ralph and Billy Love Earth.”

Some fans on Reddit tried to speculate on which band members were ill while others were impressed that the band has been managed to keep details private.

The postponement impacts seven dates including in Canada and three in the United States.

Prior to the tour’s kick off back in April, Young previously said the band had to consider their health issues at their age which is why he decided they only play outdoor shows because of COVID-19.

“We gotta be careful,” Young said on a Zoom call with fans . “I imagine if you look at a regular group of 15,000 or 20,000 people, just randomly… then look at 15,000 or 20,000 people that all went to a show, and how many of them got COVID, I think you’d find people that went to a show inside have a lot more of a chance of getting sick.”

“I don’t really need to do that,” he added. “Willie Nelson told me he’s only playing outside now. I felt that was a good idea, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Neil Young performs on stage with his band The Crazy Horse at the Vieilles Charrues festival

Neil Young and Crazy Horse have been forced to indefinitely postpone their remaining Love Earth Tour dates due to illness hitting ‘a couple of us’.

The tour kicked off in April in San Diego, California and sees the band take fans on a journey of their throwback songs such as Cortez the Killer, Powderfinger, Like a Hurricane and Down By The River.

However, the jaunt has been abruptly halted due to illness striking the crew.

The musicians announced the cancellation of their upcoming US shows in a post shared on Young’s official website.

‘When a couple of us got sick after Detroit’s Pine Knob, we had to stop,’ the statement explained.

‘We are still not fully recovered, so sadly our great tour will have a big unplanned break.

‘We will try to play some of the dates we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again!

‘We know many of you made travel plans and we apologise for the inconvenience.’

The statement thanked fans for their ‘understanding and patience’, suggesting that health is a number one priority.

‘We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you… and for us,’ it added.

It was signed by legendary frontman Young , 78; guitarist Micah Nelson, 34, who is the son of musician Willie Nelson; drummer Ralph Molina, 81, and bassist Billy Talbot, 80.

The band did not indicate which members of the group had fallen ill, but their Pine Knob Music Theatre show referenced in Michigan took place on May 22.

Affected tour dates that will no longer be going ahead include eight Canadian dates across cities Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, London and Vancouver, as well as shows scheduled for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah and Colorado.

Young and Crazy Horse were also expected to perform at the Hollywood Bowl in September, as well as sets at Ohana Fest and Kentucky’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival.

This latest sad news for fans comes after the group announced in May that several shows were being postponed ‘due to illness’.

Talbot and Molina have been with the band since it was formed in the 1960s, while Nelson joined last year.

Neil Young performs on stage with Crazy Horse in London in 1976

The band is best known for its association with Heart Of Gold singer Young, with 15 studio albums and eight live albums billed as being by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

The band also released six studio albums of their own between 1971 and 2009.

Singer-songwriter Young, who started his career in the 1960s, has bagged multiple Grammys across his career, as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: in 1995 as a solo artist and in 1997 as a member of his first band, the folk-rock outfit Buffalo Springfield.

Tyla cancels first tour, Coachella performance amid health issue: 'Silently suffering'

singer cancels tour due to illness

South African singer Tyla has canceled her first tour and Coachella appearance amid health concerns.

The "Water" singer, 22, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram Thursday explaining the cancelation. "As much as this is something I would rather have health with privately … For the past year, I've been silently suffering with an injury that has tragically worsened," she began.

"I've seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonizing as has the severity of the situation," she wrote. "In consulting with medical professionals it's become increasingly clear that continuing any festival or tour dates would jeopardize my long-term health and safety."

Because of that, the singer has to cancel her tour. "I am absolutely heartbroken," she said.

"Words cannot describe my frustration at this pivotal point in my career. So please know that my team and I are working diligently on a spectacular show for you as soon as I am recovered and ready to return safely onstage this summer," the Grammy winner wrote.

Tyla also expressed her gratitude to her fans, dubbed the Tygers, for making her "life-long dream" a reality. "I am so grateful and humbled by this past year and the way it's changed my life. I can never thank you guys enough for all your loving support, all the joy, the laughter and the wins!"

The tour was due to kick off next week with the U.K. and European leg followed by North America and an appearance at the Coachella music festival. It would have commenced on May 28.

Tyla's summer hit "Water" took social media and quickly earned her acclaim, winning her first Grammy in the inaugural best African music performance category over her peers Burna Boy , Ayra Starr, Davido and Musa Keys, and Asake & Olamide.

She later released a 5-track self-titled EP in December with Travis Scott hopping on the "Water" remix.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse have cancelled upcoming shows of their Love Earth Tour.

The Canadian rock legend and his longtime backing band announced Wednesday the U.S.-Canada tour will go on a "big unplanned break" as some members of the band recover from an unspecified illness.

"When a couple of us got sick after Detroit's Pine Knob, we had to stop," a message posted on Young's website said.

Young and Crazy Horse scrapped tour dates through the end of July. They were scheduled to play in Toronto, Ottawa, London, Ont., Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton, and finish the Canadian slate with two dates in Burnaby, B.C. July shows in Oregon, Utah and Washington were also cancelled.

In Winnipeg, ticketholders were notified Wednesday they would be refunded their tickets for his scheduled July 17 concert at the city's Blue Cross Park.

The Love Earth tour was announced this February, two years after the songwriter said he would no longer tour unless he was able to do so in an environmentally sustainable way.

Young and the band apologized to fans for the cancellation, but added that "Health is #1."

"We will try to play some of the days we miss as time passes when we are ready to rock again," the message said.

"We want to stay and do more shows and more albums for you."

Ticketmaster said on its site that those who bought tickets should expect refunds to their accounts in 14 to 21 days.

The London and Ottawa dates were to be festival appearances.

Ottawa's Bluesfest said in a social media post that Offspring will now headline the July 11 night. Single-day ticket holders for that date will receive further information soon, organizers said.

Rock the Park in London said Wednesday that Bryan Adams has now been added to the bill on July 13, the night Young was to play. Those who purchased tickets for that date will be emailed about the change and given the option of a refund, organizers said.

Young, 78, has been backed on the tour by longtime Crazy Horse members Billy Talbot on bass, Ralph Molina on drums, and newer addition Micah Nelson on guitar. Nelson is the son of country music legend Willie Nelson.

Young and band did manage to play a Toronto show on May 20, just before the aforementioned Detroit date. Late May dates in Chicago, Dallas and Austin, Texas, were then scrapped.

Young's schedule still includes September dates in Kentucky and California.

Pearl Jam cancel 2 tour dates due to illness: 'The band has yet to make a full recovery'

The rock band was previously scheduled to play in Berlin but backed out at the last minute.

The show must not go on for Pearl Jam — for three concerts, at least.

On Sunday, the rock band canceled two more European tour dates due to an unspecified illness shortly after canceling another show for the same reason.

"We are sorry to share that the Pearl Jam concerts scheduled for Tuesday, July 2nd and Wednesday, July 3rd in Berlin are cancelled," the band said in a statement shared on social media. "Tickets will be refunded at the point of purchase. Thank you for continued understanding and support, it means the world."

The photo in the social media post gave fans more information on how the band members were still recovering from undisclosed health issues.

"Despite everyone’s best efforts, the band has yet to make a full recovery," the statement reads. "The impacts of this decision are not lost on us. We feel deeply that so many people spend their time, money and emotional energy to get tickets and then to come see the band, and it is heart-wrenching to have to disappoint you. We also appreciate the many people whose hard work goes into making these shows happen."

The statement continues, "Please trust we never take these decisions lightly and try to do everything possible to show up for you all. We wish a reschedule had been possible for this tour leg and hope to come back soon."

Pearl Jam previously cancelled their Saturday, June 29 show at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the same reason. The newly cancelled dates were scheduled for Tuesday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 3 at Waldbühne in Berlin. The band is supposed to play next on Saturday, July 6 in Barcelona.

The band was recently joined onstage by Bradley Cooper at May's BottleRock Napa Valley festival for a duet of "Maybe It's Time" from 2018's  A Star Is Born , as well as an encore to Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." Frontman Eddie Vedder introduced Cooper as his "great, great pal" because the pair became close while Cooper made  A Star Is Born , as the actor consulted the legendary rocker on his portrayal of his character, Jackson Maine.

"I went up to Seattle and spent four or five days with him and I asked him 9,000 questions," Cooper  told Yahoo Movies . "And he gave me minor, little things that only musicians know about what to do, just aesthetically and the inner workings."

Céline Dion cancels tour dates as a result of neurological disorder

The Canadian singer announced the cancellation of the European leg of her Courage World Tour as she continues to battle Stiff Person Syndrome

Céline Dion has cancelled all of her tour dates for 2023 and 2024 as she continues to deal with a rare neurological disorder known as Stiff Person Syndrome.

“I’m so sorry to disappoint all of you once again. I’m working really hard to build back my strength, but touring can be very difficult even when you’re 100%,” the 55-year-old Canadian singer said in a statement posted on her website. “It’s not fair to you to keep postponing the shows, and even though it breaks my heart, it’s best that we cancel everything now until I’m really ready to be back on stage again. I want you all to know, I’m not giving up … and I can’t wait to see you again!”

Dion first revealed the diagnosis in a tearful video to fans last December, when she postponed the European leg of her Courage World Tour until August 2023. The tour was set to commence in Amsterdam and run through Europe, ending in London in April 2024. The condition, which affects somewhere between 1 and 2 million people worldwide, causes muscle spasms and painful stiffness that worsens over time.

“Unfortunately the spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to,” Dion said in her announcement of the diagnosis, which came after months of worsening health issues. “I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better and my precious children who are supporting me and giving me hope. I’m working hard with my support medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again, but I have to admit it’s been a struggle.”

Dion first spoke about her symptoms in October 2021, when she postponed the beginning of her Las Vegas residency due to what she described as “severe and persistent” muscle spasms. “I’m heartbroken by this,” she said. “My team and I have been working on our new show for the past eight months, and to not be able to open this November saddens me beyond words.”

There is no known cure for Stiff Person Syndrome, but it is treatable through chemical intervention and immune therapies.

The singer most recently appeared in her first film role for the romance film Love Again , starring Priyanka Chopra and Sam Heughan. While she released five new songs for the film, she did not appear at any premieres.

In the statement posted to her website, Dion’s team expressed optimism for Dion’s future tours: “We do have every hope that someday soon, Celine will be able to come to all of these cities in Europe to perform for her amazing fans, but that time simply is not now.”
